Returning from long hiatus - Balance Question

in Profession Balance

Neko.9021

Ok, so here’s the issue. GW2 consists of three entirely separate game modes – PvE, WvW, and PvP – and the considerations for each of these is totally different.

The other thing you must consider is that the Warrior has indeed received a few changes to its damage over the course of the game, mainly due to its initial huge popularity in PvE (4 Warrior 1 Mesmer lol) and its unpopularity in PvP.

The OTHER thing you need to know is that there are a lot of considerations that have to be made when people talk about certain situations in any of these game modes. The Warrior has low damage if you stack it against other classes in a spreadsheet or if you play under well-coordinated groups, in which case it’s basically a banner bot. But if you consider that the class has a large health pool, heavy armor, a strong passive heal with Healing Signet, and the ability to easily self-buff Might with Forceful Greatsword and Hundred Blades, then often you’ll find that Warrior will do much higher damage than most other classes in a PvE Dungeon PUG for a casual player piloting the game.

Simply put, to the average player playing the Warrior, yes, it does a lot of damage. In PvP, Hambow builds still do a lot of base damage with Soldier’s Amulet. In PvE, a typical GS/X Berserker build will still easily self-buff and do good damage compared to most other classes while still having a large health pool and heavy armor and Healing Signet. There’s a reason it’s still a very popular class to play and relax with – the class has a large margin for error and easily self-buffs to do well and do good damage.

Now, if you’re asking, at higher echelons of play, is the Warrior the super best? The answer is probably no. In PvE, the Elementalist can play a high-risk high-reward Berserker build that does quite a bit more damage with Staff spamming Lava Font, Ice Bow for burst, and Lightning Hammer for extremely high autoattack damage. The Elementalist has in many ways replaced the Warrior as the go-to damage class for super coordinated speed runs. Given that, many of those players still prefer to run casually on Warrior because quite frankly, it’s a lot less stressful with such high base defenses. In PvP the Warrior is still very very strong, but the Elementalist again has sort of eclipsed it with its re-powered, un-nerfed (they removed the nerfs to Cleansing Water and Signet of Restoration in PvP) D/D Spec, now equipped with Strength Runes and Celestial Amulet for even more tankiness and damage.

Also, the BIG thing that has changed with Warriors is that Warriors lose their adrenaline when they leave combat, and they lose it even on missing a burst attack. This severely cuts into the initial burst of Warriors at the start of PvE encounters who used to run around with a ton of initial Adrenaline for the Berserker’s Power bonus. In PvP, it means that they can’t open a fight with a burst skill and they’re forced into running Longbow even more now if they want to guarantee a cleanse, because using other burst skills risks losing your Adrenaline and thus your cleanse.

Basically, since you’ve left, Warriors got toned down a bit. Then, for PvE, people discovered Elementalist damage was really strong and made a bunch of high-damage builds. Then, for PvP, it got un-nerfed and now wreaks havoc in that game mode with the same boring overpowered triple-cantrip-water-arcana bunker build. It’s the best class in PvP and is in many ways the best class in PvE.

I like how even when people are given free reign to make their own rune sets, they’re still severely underpowered compared to the current crop of runes that dominate the game.

I do think it’s a strong skill, but the various cantrips, Signet of Earth, and Ice Bow are all equally valid choices as well, depending on the situation and build.

Regardless, I can honestly say however, your build looks pretty bad. You’re completely missing out on any of the worthwhile support that Ele brings with Cleansing Wave, Cleansing Water, Evasive Arcana, and Elemental Attunement.

Couple questions regarding this build since my ranger is the least played (alt) vs. my main a guardian (probably why I struggle on my note below).

1. WvW – how do you keep engaged (resetting of fights, disengaging, run to away, etc.)?
2. Wvw – why melee vs. no range or traps? Wouldn’t it make sense to just roll a thief instead to get the reset fight options and stealth?

Is the primary mechanic here evade the attacks and apply pressure via conditions and bleeds? Per my comment I mainly play LB with sword/dagger but find when I engage melee I totally screw it up because my main is a Guardian who just gets into the middle of things (the whole sword/dagger moving around targets, jumping back then forth makes me loose targets too much ).

I run LB with trapper runes and the new sigil of incapacitation and trying to figure out the build(s) posted here just for something different. Granted I’m a newb so just picturing the play is all

This build was not made with WvW roaming in mind at all. It was entirely constructed with sPvP as its sole focus.

Regardless, there’s a very similar WvW Survival-Condi build that exists as a Dire variant that I’ve seen used to good effect: http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fNMQRAnY8fjEqUzaLL+rQ1aABhaVA0uGu3Ww9QcDfdFrkC-TRiAABJ8AAg+EAko+BAOIALt/wpq/wxRAQSlgip8LAACwMLzysMDO6RP6RP6RbmzcmzcmzsUAwMNC-e

There’s really not much to this build (like most Ranger builds) other than applying condis and trying to kite around your opponent. You try to land damage with Entangle, Axe 2, Dagger Skills, and Torch Skills. The Sword is primarily there as a disengage tool (use the 2 to leap backwards, then turn around, then use the 2 again to leap away).

I think the big thing people don’t really take advantage with for Elementalist MH Dagger is that the Air autoattack has this gigantic range. Lightning Whip’s 300 range is more than double the range of Triple Chop on Warrior Axe. The attack is also smooth and you can easily strafe around with greater rooom while spamming Lightning Whip. It actually makes the set very versatile and easy to survive on compared to Staff in many cases, where Staff has long casting times that lock you in place and leave you vulnerable (such as when spamming Fireball + Lava Font).

is fresh air really worth it?

in Elementalist

Posted by: Neko.9021

Neko.9021

For daggers, you use it so you can spam Lightning Whip more (usually for PvE).

For scepter, it gives you a reliable source of burst from Electric Discharge plus the sustained damage of Arc Lightning (usually for PvP).

In both cases, it gives the Elementalist a reliable way to go back to doing more damage, rather than waiting on attunement cooldowns, while in Earth or Water Attunements, while still gaining the utility of those attunements.

Erm, did you just realize the existence of “meta builds” in a competitive environment once that website was posted? Because it’s not like any of the builds on that site are new or different – they’re all pretty well-defined old builds that have existed for over a year. And now they’ve been compiled onto a convenient site so that newer players can have access to them right off the bat.

TCG's Survival-Condi Ranger

During the EU ToG Finals, TCG’s Warrior played Ranger instead. We’ve seen a few Survival-Ranger builds in big tourneys like these, but they’d often lose to somewhere in the final rounds. This is, as far as I know, the first time a Survival-Condi Ranger was on a winning team in a major tourney.

Here is the build: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNAV3YjEq0waHLusQ1aADhqdLEslArAwd8+CXdJrIK-TJhHwADuIAAeCAILDAa/BA

A few interesting points:

  • The build looks to be mainly a side-point skirmisher, but the immobilizes in Muddy Terrain and Entangle give it a lot of team-fight utility as well. In fact during the tourney, I saw him in many team fights.
  • Speaking of Entangle, the synergy it has with Krait Runes is very strong. A person caught in the Entangle has a hard time removing the immobilize because of the Krait Rune’s cover conditions that it places upon an elite being used.
  • It’s a Rabid build that utilizes Sharpened Edges for a few extra bleeds, and thus uses Sigil of Leeching for a bit of extra sustain.
  • Geomancy Sigils are a key source of burst and damage, as is common with Condi-based builds.
  • Typical Jungle Spider + Wolf pet combo.

Just wanted to make the information largely available to help the meta develop.

The issue is that there’s just so much damage in GW2 now with double sigils and buffed runes, as well as general power creep in the various classes. The Elementalist’s sustain does need to get nerfed (preferably to the major offenders: Soothing Mist, Soothing Wave, and Evasive Arcana’s Water dodge roll… although the nerf to Evasive Arcana in PvP is probably already enough). But there also needs to be a systemic trimming of all damage from all classes, as well as from the various overpowered sigils and runes that dominate (Battle, Doom, Fire, Air, and Geomancy are all way too strong and push class’ damage through the roof when you can run two proccing sigils at the same time).

PLEASE say you’re kidding me.

Damage has been nerfed to unthinkably low levels. It’s grotesque how I’m hitting literally over 50% less damage now than I used to on my warrior than back in April and how weak my ele feels in PvE these days now since the ferocity roll out + lack of FGS. There’s barely any reason to justify taking it in dungeons to begin with because it dies so fast if anything goes wrong.

The reason I bring PvE into the picture is because just about every person that talks about balancing in this game neglects to take into consideration that ArenaNet is too lazy to separate their changes between the game modes. If you feel like damage is too strong in PvP, keep in mind it’s weak as hell in PvE and that’s considering all classes.

Like I’ve said before, the trend of the game has been to nerf PvE damage and buff PvP damage, which is the opposite of what they should do. This thread was talking about PvP balance so in that context, my post is about specifically PvP balance. With PvE, imo, all the level 80+ PvE mobs have long since deserved to have their HP reduced. We’ve known this since the start of the game. Dungeons are incredibly boring when we slog through them with low DPS.

I think it’s a hard issue. They actually did nerf Elementalist sustain in PvP, and the class was complete garbage for an entire year when they did. When they undid the Cleansing Water and Signet of Restoration nerfs, the class literally went from worst class in PvP to Double-Ele comps everywhere. The Elementalist is notorious for either being worthless or totally dominating, and it’s hard for the balancers to come to a happy medium.

That’s not an easy thing to undo. Thus, the devs have just sort of given Ele this ridiculous amount of self-sustain just so that it can power through all of the ridiculous amount of damage that people have gained.

Dungeon PvE Speedclear/“Meta” builds:

1. Scepter-Focus Lightning Hammer
2. Fire Staff
3. Dagger-Focus Fresh Air

PvP Meta builds:
1. Dagger/Dagger Celestial Bunker
2. Staff Support Celestial Bunker

Here is the best PvE/Dungeon guide I could give you.

In general though, running a 6/6/X/X/X Ele build can be a bit shocking and difficult for new players. I suggest if you’re completely new running a tanky build (look at the PvP meta builds) but with Berserker gear, and then as you learn the encounters, building out more offensively. I know a lot of players who started with X/X/X/6/6 builds for PvE Ele and then moved to 6/6/X/X/X, but that took a bit of time and familiarity with the encounters. Also, if you ever run WvW or PvP, you should probably just play the heavy Water-Arcana builds that Meta PvP Eles generally play.

Oh, and in general: Berserker for PvE, and Celestial for PvP. Condi Ele is bad in PvE and at best experimental in PvP (a lot of troll builds will win duels and such, but Celestial Ele is a much better teamfighter and generalist PvP Ele than Condi Ele will ever be).

For what it’s worth though, Ele is top tier in both PvE and PvP. It’s not uncommon to see Double Ele in PvE casual-speedclear comps and sPvP comps. So learning the class and its meta builds for its respective formats makes you a very valuable player.

Thanks Neko! One question, what made you choose LS over say Arcane Shield, Mist Form, or AoE?

Right now I’m running 0/6/0/4/4 with it and I have to say it’s a pretty fun build, albeit somewhat fragile as I’m using zerker amulet. It can hit like a truck, brings some team support, and has a good range of CC. The only drawback is I can’t survive any kind of 1v2.

Lightning Flash is simply one of the best spells Eles have in general. Blinks are just one of those really high value utility types, and besides the usual combos (Burning Speed + Lightning Flash), the ability to re-position yourself and/or do instant damage is just too good.

Also, the signets aren’t just there for the passives. Signet of Earth with Focus is just really strong, and proactively using the Signet of Air’s instant blind is a great defense mechanism (and of course, you can always use it reactively as a stunbreak).

[PvP/WvW]The only thing that is truely OP...

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Neko.9021

Neko.9021

I feel like it’s a pretty unfair way to shut down arguments about balance by simply saying “just embrace whatever you think is OP.” It’s true that a truly competitive player should just play to win and play whatever is needed in order to do so, but I don’t think that has much bearing on, as a matter of general discussion, figuring out what’s actually too strong and not too strong.

To put it another way, I think embracing only a competitive mindset when talking about a game is a fairly narrow way of evaluating a game. If GW2 devolved into a meta where every player ran 5 Celestial Bunkers that run the timer out every match, which is “countered” by a team of 5 Zerker Burst classes, is it not fair to take a step back and say “hey, this meta kinda sucks” and watch as your already dwindling PvP community continues to leave because of how unfun the game has become?

Taking a pulse on what the community feels and what engages them to play and is enjoyable is important. If a class falls in power to the point where it’s simply unplayable at high level, why shouldn’t the players of that class ask for changes? There was an entire year where the Elementalist was simply unviable in sPvP entirely, and it’s no coincidence that many of the players who mained Ele just quit the game. You can fault them for not being hardcore enough or not Playing To Win enough, but I think the game and community are small enough that we’d be at a pretty big loss if even one of the professions and all the players who enjoy that profession were left out of PvP.

But ultimately, I think what’s really dangerous is trying to kill all balance discussion altogether, with the reasoning that players shouldn’t concern themselves with balance because they’re the players. Quite honestly, the players will have a decent understanding of, at the very least, what is enjoyable and what isn’t, and GW2 is full of terribly unenjoyable things that have brought down the PvP scene. You accuse the developers of paying too much attention to the playerbase, I accuse them of not paying enough attention. Players are sick of fighting minion builds, builds that burst players from 100 to 0 (often from stealth, in the clutter of AI, or from far away), builds that DoT you to death and thus mandate that nearly every class build themselves around condition removal, builds that heal forever, builds that are just so tanky, builds that build up so much damage with Might that squishier more midrange builds can’t be played anymore. Players are tired of not having more game modes. Hell, players are tired of kittenING SKYHAMMER.

GW2 PvP sucks in its current state. And I blame that more on the developers than the players. I’d rather give the players the chance to speak their mind on what should be done, rather than just silence all discussion and quietly obediently obey whatever ANet says should be done.

I get what they’re trying to do with their identity but personally I just find the quirks more obnoxious and I find it hard to take someone who writes like that seriously. The claim of the first R80 also confuses me because last I remember there was no R80 until the Glory change. Technically the second the update hit anyone that had enough XP to become R80 hit it simultaneously. Also, the claim of them being the most friendly person rings pretty hollow to me when I’ve seen them both here and in the HotM saying some really negative things towards people and covering it up with niceties. If someone thinks I’m a moron/wrong I’d rather they say it straight out then covring up under a veil of politeness.

I know a ton of people disagree with my views (I’m only human) but I’d rather they identify me for those views and not a few catchphrases. But hey, w/e works I guess. This post is kind of pointless but I guess but oh well.

But why do you use Dire instead of Rabid ? you already invested 6 points into skirmishing and been using sharpened edges, why not building enough crit chance to make it really usefull ?
Also with 0 healing power why do you chose oakheart slave over off-hand training since you have 2 off-hand weapons ? the radious of bonfire it’s very small when untrained.

My build is similar but more focused on critics and bleeds and I love it

In the last couple of days I’ve been receiving a lot of pms asking how I can stealth that many times XD, too many people don’t know about these runes.

I still kill people pretty quickly with just Dire gear. Giving up all of that Vitality for extra bleeds doesn’t really seem worth it. The damage with just the base bleeds from traps and weapon skills and Geomancy kills pretty well. The regen from Oakheart Salve is also still decent sustain even with 0 Healing Power. You certainly can take Offhand Training and kill people with the gigantic Bonfire AoE though, which is fine, but my burning trap does that pretty decently already.

Im surprised Guardian isnt nr1 for most people.

The more competitive pvp gets the more Guardians you see, looking at high-end pvp its practically an unwritten rule that you need to bring atleast one Guardian. Some bring two, leading to absurdly high representation stats. ToL had Guardians clocked in at a more then 1 per team, average. Teams would sooner run two Guardians than no Guardians.

WvW has never known anything but a massive amount of Guardians. From day 1 untill now, every zerg needs their mass of Guardians. The current GWEN meta is over a year old. With at the core a kittenton of both Guardians and Warriors. The difference is, Warriors got nerfed and Guardians got buffed.

No Guardians were on the winning teams for ToL 2. They are not number 1 in high tier sPvP.

Crafting them requires 400 in Huntsman—but don’t let that deter you. The rune is as powerful as it sounds, and the cost is quite small now that the initial influx spike of recipes and hype have kind of settled.

You need 400 in any of the armorcrafting crafts: Armorsmith, Leatherworker, or Tailor.

WvW Trapper Rune Build!

in Ranger

Neko.9021

Not too much to say, other than that Trapper Runes are crazy powerful and carry this build entirely. Trapper Ranger has always been a sort of high risk high reward build, but these runes remove a lot of the risk involved with playing Ranger in general. Access to both spammable Stealth and Super Speed give the Ranger far greater skirmishing power, making the traps both high damaging utilities as well as great escape tools.

The build’s playstyle is pretty straightforward. It’s a WvW roaming build that lets you skirmish with a small number of players very well, with high amounts of AoE condi damage and good access to soft CC with Spike Trap and Entangle. I went for Geomancy and Hydromancy, to help land more bleeds and kept my opponent snared. It’s fairly easy to run up to an enemy in stealth and condi burst them down with traps, Torch skills, and Axe 2. If you need to disengage, you can simply throw down traps and run away with your Stealth and Super Speed.

The Sword is primarily there for the mobility. Turn off auto-targeting and learn to quickly pan your camera or quick-turn around to use the #2 leap chain to run away.

I try to always run triple traps. Slotting in a trap for a stunbreaker or other utility skill really decreases your damage. If you do feel you need to slot in some sort of other utility, take out Viper’s Nest.

The points in Nature Magic are flexible. You can take Nature’s Protection instead of Nature’s Bounty, for instance. Or you could put them in Marksmanship and take Keen Edge.

The gear is mostly Dire, with only some Rabid upgrades (such as Crest of the Rabid) in the trinket upgrade slots. This helps you proc Sharpened Edges for a few more bleeds. If you can’t afford Ascended Dire+Rabid Trinkets, you can get Dire Exotic trinkets on the TP as here:
Amulet: Alpha Conduit / Stargazer Pendant
Ring: Ring of Blood
Accessory: Vallog’s Demise

This build is pretty standard and has been around since the beginning of the game, but I’m posting it here to help bring back visibility to the build, and how much stronger it’s gotten in WvW roaming with the introduction of Trapper Runes. The runes are not in the build editor because the site hasn’t been updated to include them yet. Trap runes themselves can only be obtained via crafting. You can buy the recipe from the TP (Recipe: Superior Rune of the Trapper).

Right now, any sort of “weapon swapping” will proc the trait, and it has NO Internal Cooldown.

That means you can:

to keep proccing the trait.

THAT MEANS THAT A WARRIOR CAN JUST KEEP PICKING UP THEIR BANNER OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND GET FREE CLEANSING. IT COUNTS ON BOTH PICKUP AND DROP AS WELL, SO IT IS INCREDIBLY RAPID CLEANSING AS WELL.

This needs a 5 sec ICD. There’s no way that this trait should provide continuous free cleansing by just picking up a banner repeatedly.
