Rangers Useless in Dungeons

This may sound silly, but if you have 3 Eles in a party, and you didn’t need the utility of a Mesmer or Guardian or Thief, and want to fill the last slots, wouldn’t Warrior+Ranger be the best to maximize damage? At 3 Elementalists, I’m not sure a 4th will increase damage.

So explain each Class

Guardian and Elementalist are typically Direct Damage professions, Necromancer, Engineer and Mesmer are typically Condition Damage professions, Warrior, Ranger and Thief are about equally good at both. Certain builds deviate from the norm, of course, so don’t feel locked down to either of the two because of your profession. Hybrid builds are generally not useful, it’s better to focus on either Direct or Condition damage.

  • Support – Support is the second cornerstone of GW2 and refers to the use of Boons, Conditions, Condition Removal, Heals, Blocks, Evades, Unique Buffs, Projectile Reflection, Wards and Combo Fields. Timing is everything, and I strongly advocate getting to know what kind of Support you can offer and to readily, and consciously, training to use it effectively just as you train to deal damage or dodge appropriately. Do not fall into the trap of thinking that you need Healing Power gear to be a good supporter, you don’t. What turns the tide in GW2 Is not Bursts of Healing, but correctly timed appliance of Boons, blocks and dodges.

Guardian is the undisputed king of Defensive support, bringing crazy levels of Condition Removal, Aegis, Heals, Projectile Reflection/Blocking, Wards, Protection and Stability. They’re also extremely good at stacking Might if built right.
Elementalist is the Queen then, bringing more Might and Fury buffs through their fire fields and blast finishers than any other profession. They can also spike heal by blasting Water Fields as well, and they’ve got a few more defenses lined up as well that can be used in a pinch.
Warrior and Ranger both bring unique buffs (Banners, Empower Allies and Phalanx Strength / Spotter and Frost Spirit respectively) to the party, making them useful allies at all times.
Engineer brings both Fire, water and smoke fields, amongst plenty of blasts, however they’re not as good as Elementalists in this regard and have lower overall DPS.
Mesmer brings portals, projectile defense and the wonderful Signet of Inspiration Boon share, but can’t reliably stack boons on the party themselves. They’re useful in certain situations, but mostly lose out to Guardians in that aspect.
Thief brings Loads of Stealth, Projectile Blocking and the only Energy Restoration skill in the game. Doesn’t sound like a lot, but what they have make a difference.
Necromancer brings almost no support to the team. They have some condition conversion and traits for support, but overall they’re much weaker than the other professions in this regard.

  • Control – The last, but not least, aspect of the GW2 trinity is Control, which refers to the use of Hard CC (Knocks, Stuns etc), Soft CC (Cripple, Blind etc) and Line of Sight (LoS). Knowing when and where to throw down Hard CC or Soft CC is the key to mastering Control, and it will show on the player if they know how to do it properly or not, so do not skip out on this practice either.

Guardian has a few Launches and Wards, but they really shine while Spamming Blinds and Vulnerability on enemies.
Elementalists have a few Hard CC skills, but lack a lot in terms of Soft CC.
Warrior have Loads of Stuns and Knocks, loads of Cripple, Weakness and Vulnerability.
Ranger have Good Soft CC, not a lot in terms of Hard CC.
Thief is The king of Soft CC, best Blind spammer of the professions, Perma-Weakness/Cripple, Loads of Vulnerability.
Mesmer has pulls, knocks, dazes and some soft CC. They generally rely on clones and stealth to mindgame other players.
Engineer is the jack-of-all-trades and brings a little bit of everything. They can easily stack loads of conditions on enemies in a flash. They mostly rely on Soft CC, but their Hard CC skills are usually quick and good for surprise moves.
Necromancer makes up for what they lacked in Support, with their Control ability. No other profession can use Fear as readily as they can and they have plenty of Chill, Weakness, Cripple and Boon Corruption/Removal.

Elementalists lack Soft CC? When they’re busy spamming Cripple and Chill on low CD? You’re crazy. This list is nonsense.

Also, DPS Mesmer in PvE is usually a Phantasm-Berserker build, and in sPvP is usually a Shatter-Berserker build. It’s only in “roaming” and “dueling” do I really see a lot of Condi Mesmers.

Illusionary Leap: Fixed a bug that allowed players to swap places with their clone after it was destroyed.

Why did you nerf this skill? I don’t even play Mesmer, but this change seems like such an uncalled for change. The ability to time and use this skill was a sign of a truly skilled Mesmer that distinguished good players from just a button spammer. Now a huge defensive part of the skill set that has been a part of the kit since release is now just suddenly gone, with no compensation, on a kit and class that really wasn’t causing any balance problems to begin with. Even as a non-Mesmer player I find this change upsetting.

Honestly, you believing what you’re saying is a fact is a pretty bad sign. You can only measure these facts with the leaderboards and the opinions of others. Neither of those is worthy of being the ultimate authority regarding what’s viable. Something not getting top results or not being used very widely used are signs that it isn’t viable, not proof. The correlation is not as direct as you make it sound. Do you even know exactly how people are ranked on this ladder that you’re elevating to such status? I won’t say much more because you’re making it very clear that your thoughts are purely factual while others are just being immature or changing their opinions without proper cause.

Yeah! Totally man! It’s completely illogical to argue that Elementalist wasn’t viable pre-patch based on things like “leaderboard results”, “tournament results”, “opinions of good players”, “meta comps” or “team queue comps” or “actual results”. Being viable means having the heart to BELIEVE IN YOURSELF, even if the facts of your performance prove otherwise! pumps fists in the air and cheers

Bunker Cleric Staff Ele was seen on both teams at the end of the NA ToL. The set is actually incredibly strong as a dedicated support character, and the Water fields it provides, when coordinated with your team, are amazing. The only “problem” with Staff is that you need to actually work with your team mates for it to work out well.

Neko.9021

The reason you use Focus instead of Dagger for Dungeons is a bit hard to explain, but it really entails going through both sets and realizing that, at the end of the day, other than being slightly more damaging and mobile, OH Dagger doesn’t really offer that much compared to Focus. Given, in PvP where players have far less health and mobility is key, OH Dagger can be of great use. However, an extra 10k Firegrab and the damage from Ring of Fire is really about it in terms of more damage. Churning Earth is a straight up DPS loss because of the long channel. Focus also has faster and more reliable blast finishers thanks to Earth 4 and Water 5, so in terms of Might Stacking, it’s better.

An invulnerability on Obsidian Flesh is really strong, just because of the nature of the encounters the game has. PvE enemies hit slow and predictably and rarely do mass, unavoidable damage. When they DO hit a lot, it’s generally for a short burst of time. So timing an Obsidian Flesh because you know that you’re about to encounter what would be a lot of damage, and then just switching back to Air for more damage generally ends up being quite useful.

In general, MH Dagger builds take advantage of Fresh Air so they can swap attunements, so you can still use the defensive skills of the Focus in Water (a daze), Air (projectile block and a very long KD), and Earth (Cleanse and an Invuln), all while still being able to DPS with the autoattack of Lightning Whip, since that’s your main source of damage.

Also, Scepter has terrible sustained damage and it breaks my heart when I see someone use it in dungeons without ever using a conjure. It’s really low. Like super, super, super low compared to the damage of Lightning Whip, Lightning Hammer, or Lava Font spamming. However, because Scepter has two low CD blast finishers as opposed to MH Dagger’s one blast finisher, it’s better to use it for Might Stacking, then dropping down Lightning Hammer and attacking with that. However, to be honest, for most people’s play, I strongly feel that a Dagger/Focus build is the best thing to play with casual groups.

OH Axe for Warrior is completely useless in PvE… so… I guess OH Dagger is better if you compare it to Warrior’s OH Axe ;3

Offhand Dagger has some mobility and a CC, as well as some decent burst and another fire field. It’s certainly not a completely terrible choice. I just think that in many cases you’ll find the invulnerability and projectile block on Focus to be more relevant in harder content.

Also, the mobility of OH Dagger is better in open world PvE. I’d really only take focus if I was in a dungeon or getting ready for a hard fight.

The problem with Lich Form, like all the transform elites, is that it scales up your stats. This makes sense for stuff like Toughness and Vitality, but for Power and Precision, it has some pretty stupid effects.

The interaction between scaled up Power and skills outside of the normal set of Transform skills (such as Sigil of Fire, Sigil of Air, Spinal Shivers proc, Wells and Marks laid down before the transformation) causes Lich Form to do ungodly amounts of damage that it really shouldn’t do.

In my opinion, Transform Skills should have their Power/Precision increases removed, but the Transform kit skills themselves should have very large Base damage and damage coefficients to compensate (since being Transformed gets rid of your armor/accessory/amulet stat increases).

@Neko Well some people dont search in guild websites for build, so i posted the [DnT] traits as well. So based on that i added the flame legion runes.

I think the big thing about the Ele builds is that, if you really are so poor that you can’t afford optimal runes, and are playing with PUGs, and are totally new to the game, I really don’t think that Conjures Ele is really gonna be super great (heck, there’s the practical issue of people stealing your hammer, which kept happening to me when I PUGed with it). Also, S/D with no Lightning Hammer slotted is complete trash. I’ve been trying to point this out to people for a long, long time.

D/F is much better for PUGing and for average play than either Fire Staff or LH Ele.

Ele is gonna have a pretty hard time PUGing, that’s just how it goes. Ele is designed to be fragile and in PUGs with low DPS, bad pulls, and bad strats, you’re gonna get punished the most.

Given that, DPS Ele is both amazing damage and damage increase all in one.

Guardian has really good carry abilities. And I think Mesmer is pretty good too, if you keep up reflects and use your focus pull well. Engi and Thief have nice utility. Warrior is easy to play but not particularly useful.

The various PvE guides stickied here should be good for PvE builds.

Ele is cool in that it actually has a bit of diversity in the kinds of PvE builds it can bring to instanced content.

A quick and dirty guide would be:

Fire Staff – Max DPS, Permanent Fire Fields
Scepter + Lightning Hammer – High DPS, Constant Blinds and Blast Finishers
Dagger + Focus – Good DPS, Lots of defensive cooldowns, Good for PUGing

6 in Fire for Fury-on-Blast
6 in Air for Vuln stacking and Fresh Air (the latter is more for Dagger)
2 in Earth for more damage or 2 in Arcana for more dodges or bigger AoEs on staff

If you find this hard to survive in, start with whatever bunkery build you probably run in PvP but with Zerker gear, and slowly trait more offensively over time.

Part of the Elementalist’s design is to feel fragile and squishy. It’s an intentional decision, meant to balance out the other abilities of the class. I don’t think it really leads to a higher skill level or anything, it’s just meant as a base way to balance out the Ele’s access to lots of skills and high potential for damage or healing.

Try and watch cmc stream Ele on Twitch. Just watching how he plays should be sufficient to learning how to play D/D in PvP.

I think the big thing about any class in GW2 is knowing the general rotations, limitations, means of doing damage, and how to avoid damage on that class. I don’t think there are really any “hard” specs in the game. So just watch how someone else plays, try and copy that, and you should roughly learn how to play that spec well.

How have eles changed in the past 8 months?

in Elementalist

Posted by: Neko.9021

Neko.9021

In PvE, a lot of players have moved onto more offensive builds. I still think the bunkery builds are useful for learning the class and encounters, however, as running a glassy Ele is very difficult, especially if you PUG.

If you’re going for something with a lot of offense in PvE, I’d suggest this: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fFAQJAotAtM4jEQAwCHAWAHAxpgMQNE-TRROwAjU+BY/Bi6JAr+jMlgiCKjA-e

The heal can be what you think is good for the situation. Arcane Brilliance for more offense, Signet for more general sustain, Ether Renewal if you need Condi Cleanse, Glyph if you want a general heal.

The two other utility slots depend on the situation. Good ones include:
-Signet of Fire – More crit chance
-Conjure Lightning Hammer – Spammable blast finisher and blind. Change Ember’s Might to Conjurer if you use this
-Conjure Frost Bow – Good for a nice bit of burst AoE damage on an area. Good for creatures with large hitboxes, large trash pulls, and objects.
-Arcane Shield – Defensive spell if you need one
-Mist Form – Defensive spell if you need another one after Arcane Shield
-Cleansing Fire/Armor of Earth – Slotted for when you really need condi removal/stability for a certain encounter. Situational utilities.
-Glyph of Elemental Power – For creative players. Use the Water effect to apply high Chill uptime to an enemy that needs to be kited around a bit or slowed down. The air one for high Weakness uptime is also very useful in certain situations.
-Glyph of Storms – Use the earth one to spam blinds on trash in an area.
-Lightning Flash – When you need a teleportation effect.
-SIgnet of Air – When running around in the open world or running to the next place in a dungeon.

The runes can be Strength or Scholar. Strength is better in bad groups, Scholar is better in good groups. Scholar is cheaper.

Sigils can be stuff like: Force, Night, Slaying, Battle, Strength, Accuracy, Energy. Figure out what works for you and the kind of groups you play with. Force+Night/Slaying is what people do for max damage. Force+Accuracy is a decent general bet. Force+Battle in a PUG situation. Battle+Strength for basically always 25 might on yourself. Battle+Energy for bad PUGs.

The last two trait points can go into:
-Earth – Stone Splinters for max damage
-Water – Vital Striking for a damage modifier, and the added benefit of the 5-point water regen trait.
-Arcana – For Renewing Stamina for 100% Vigor Uptime

Gear is always Berserker everything.

The way the build plays is by spamming Lightning Whip and using the other 3 attunements for utility and burst and blast finishers. Keep up Might and Fury by blasting in your fire fields a lot.

Keep up Might and Fury by blasting in your fire fields a lot.

sPVP Elementalist Streams to Learn From

Unfortunately, there aren’t many great PvP streams for GW2, or even many good streams for GW2 in general. Fortunately for us, Cmc is one of the few consistent (and good) GW2 PvP streamers out there, and he happens to main Ele.

There are some other people who stream GW2 and might play Ele in PvP but I find they uh, aren’t super great at it. >.>;

If Phantaram or Zoose ever unquit GW2 again you should watch them, they’re great. However, I do not anticipate this.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Denshee stream, or Chubbs, but if either of them do they’d be good to watch.

ele vs larcenous strike

It used to steal two boons.

I think the skill is fine as is. It provides a counter to the obscene might stacking dominating the meta. S/D Thief is supposed to keep boon-based builds in check.

How Is Attunement Swapping Supposed To Work?

in Elementalist

Neko.9021

Elementalist is kinda screwed up in PvE without Fresh Air. The reason for this is that the design of PvE emphasizes auto-attacking everything to death for sustained damage. For the Ele, this means you generally just want to camp Lightning Whip on MH Dagger the whole time. At the same time, all your utility and burst is in the other attunements, but it’s difficult to dance around attunements if you don’t have Fresh Air.

Overall, no, it’s not just you. Eles have some of the hardest time leveling and really do rely on trait progression to become a full class.

It’s just hotjoin. It’s not supposed to be serious. There’s queues if you want to play PvP seriously.
