Assuming you’re talking about sPvP:

It fell out of favor mainly because triple cantrip Ele became good again once they un-nerfed Cleansing Water and Signet of Restoration.

For PvE, I like D/F Fresh Air. There’s a few guides stickied on the forum that talk about it.

I’ve been playing this build for the last few hours, it’s really good! Thanks for sharing, best one I played since patch. And thats coming from someone who barely knows the d/f skillset.

Same here, did a couple matches and have been winning 1v2’s consecutively even against a thief-necro combo. Plus a necro that my mate had had trouble with.

Though after a while I did notice that the survivability is slightly lacking. Thinking of throwing the 10 of earth into water. Also wondering if there are any other skills that can be used besides that glyph…

I posted my own take on this a bit ago. I think 20/0/0/20/30 and three cantrips on your utility bar is very strong (I take Cleansing Fire, Lightning Flash, and Armor of Earth).

Neko.9021

Go do Arah Explorable. I think you’ll have a ton of fun.

In all seriousness, uhhh, it’s quite possible the dungeons in GW2 just aren’t for you. They’re legitimately pretty hard. They weren’t kidding when they said this MMO foregoes the Trinity in favor of everyone pulling their own weight. You’re expected to keep track of your own health, dodge and mitigate damage with your class abilities, and do as much damage as you can within your own personal skill level.

I think one of the issues with GW2 is that, because there’s no trinity, but mobs still run around doing tons of damage, you have to do some pretty creative things to mitigate damage. For instance, with no tank to ball up aggro all on himself, LoSing entire pulls behind corners becomes even more important since it’s one of our only tools to control aggro in a manageable way. Flawed, for sure, but that’s just how it is. I suggest looking at some dungeon guides (even these really old ones will do: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzYy8FVzP3HbRLyaW41fgKvvcBivmXUYD) and see how the dungeons are done. It’s a different game, and it’s perfectly understandable if you find it’s just not for you. However, if you still want to try and enjoy the dungeons, you’d best try and find out how they’re generally done efficiently, and see if you can’t glean some knowledge from that.

However, even though many of us enjoy the dungeons in this game, it is quite possible you just don’t have the skill level or playstyle to enjoy them, which is fine. They’re very different from other MMOs and require a really different sort of way of thinking, but if you’re insistent on learning how to do dungeons, my suggestion is watching some video guides, going to http://gw2dungeons.net for an up-to-date text guide, and then go looking around for speedclear, ‘meta’, or dungeon builds for your class.

OH, and most importantly, find a good guild that’s willing to run dungeons with you. Running with friends is better than PUGing.

I don’t get this logic.

Is there really nothing you can think of besides “Oi! The devs hate us! We’re being ignored on purpose!”? Hrm?

And sorry, but you’re talking about 1v1? A fully unsupported game mode?

I don’t really get your logic. First where did I say anything you just did? Second, I made many attempts in my forum post to tell everyone here that I’m not fully aware of everything in the game. I came here to acquire knowledge about a class I have yet to get to 80 with and was simply wondering why things the way they are. So..? I don’t even know what to say because you probably won’t even read this like how you did not even read my previous post. I really wish small minded people came with small mouths too but I guess that will never happen. Have a good day buddy.

Hold on, you don’t even have this class to 80 and you’re this upset? O.o

Listen, the Elementalist has low HP and low armor because it has access to twice the weapon skills of other classes. This allows it to do long strings of skill combos while also having responses to various situations. I can burst in Fire and blast finish in Earth, and still move to Water for heals or Air for more damage as well as CC. The Elementalist can also be built for extreme damage for PvE and buff its team offensively better than any other class while also doing some of the highest damage in the game.

Get the class to 80, read some of the stickied Ele guides, learn to play in PvP as well, and I think you will see the potential of why the class must be capped and balanced with low stats. The Elementalist simply has more outs or responses to most situtations compared to Medium and High health classes, so it gets lower health to compensate, similar to how Thieves have low HP because of their evasion and stealth or a Guardian because of their blocks, boons, and heals.

I remember when people thought Guang was crazy for promoting the idea of a “DPS Guardian” over an “Anchor Guardian” in dungeons. Good times.

Are Rangers THAT bad.

in WvW

Posted by: Neko.9021

Neko.9021

The types of skills that Rangers have don’t lend themselves well to WvW.

The Ranger is the pet class, a skirmishing class, and a survival class that focuses on single target damage. They survive through good positioning and evasion, as well as good stats. They’re weak to CC (both hard and soft), condition burst, and don’t fight outnumbered very well at all.

In roaming in WvW, they’re generally outclassed by most other professions. The reason for this is:
-They don’t have many ‘outs’ like Stealth or tons of mobility. While Rangers do have a moderate amount (Sword and GS have good mobility), it’s generally not enough to outright outrun something.
-Their playstyle doesn’t lend itself to fighting multiple opponents. They have poor AoE damage but very good single target damage. WvW generally turns into fights with several opponents and in those cases, the Ranger is easily focused down and killed.
-The Ranger has poor access to active condition cleansing and stunbreakers, and very little access to Stability. This makes them incredibly easy to CC (soft or hard) to death.
-Other classes can capitalize on how overpowered Conditions are better than Ranger does.

In Zergs, Rangers just don’t have the skill sets that lend themselves to the way large WvW zergs have developed. Guardians and Warriors have great cleave damage, access to stability, and high inherent survivability. Elementalists have some of the best AoE spells in the game with Static Field (no target limit), Meteor Shower, and Water fields that give the Hammer Train its sustain. Necromancers have crazy strong AoE damage with Wells and Deathshroud and good CC with Staff. Rangers generally get run over thanks to their lack of stability and their damage is generally single target in nature or weaker if it’s AoE (such as GS cleave). Also, first and foremost, a Ranger’s mechanic is their Pet, which gets eaten up in a Zerg fight.

Ultimately, Rangers just don’t do well in WvW. But don’t let that fact make you feel that Rangers themselves are bad. In sPvP and PvE, the Ranger is very strong. WvW’s balance is just screwed up, but the class, when in ‘fair’ fighting situations, excels and is able to support a team well thanks to the assistance of their Pet (felines do tons of damage in PvE and canines are crazy good CC in PvP) and the buffs they give out (frost spirit significantly increases group DPS in PvE and sun spirit significantly increases group DPS in PvP).

Huh? Rangers have been fairly strong in PvP and PvE for quite a while. They’re poor in WvW but WvW’s balance is all screwed up so that hardly matters.

Since when were Engineers in the ‘bottom group’ with Necros and Rangers? Necros are incredibly strong in PvP. And Engineers have been very strong in PvP and PvE for a long, long time.

Fractal Reward Track

in PvP

Posted by: Neko.9021

Neko.9021

To play at Level 40+, you almost certainly have to.

At level 40, you need 55 AR to survive the Agony checks. At level 50, you need 70 AR.

You can get 20 from Infused Rings with +5 Agony Infusions inside, then 10 more from Accessories. 5 More from an amulet, and then 5 more from a backpiece.

That’s 40 AR. You still need 15 or 30 more to do higher level FOTM.

To Infuse a backpiece, you need to spend 250 Ectos (a ton of money). If you place a +5 infusion, that gets you to 45 AR. Still not enough.

At this point, you either need to buy a bunch of +10 infusions (costs about 70 gold per, on the trading post), or get Ascended Weapons or Ascended Armor. It easily costs over 100 gold to get a craft to 500, and then about 50 gold or so to make an ascended weapon or armor piece.

So yes, if you want to progress in fractals and have a decent chance at getting good rewards, you do need to spend hundreds of gold.

According to drop research, you can play level 30-40 fractal and get the same rewards as doing lv50 fractal:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Av4NvDVKEaOzdHJPaTlsRU5LeEJWN3hodklXWGFCU1E&usp=drive_web#gid=0

Doing lv40+ fractals is only a matter of challenge and it is unnecessary in order to get fractal skins or ascended stuff.

I’m quite aware of that drop research, and I’m not entirely sure if it’s wholly true or not.

If it is true, then the drop rates are bugged. That, at the very least, must change first.

Regardless, it wouldn’t change the fact that drop rates are absolutely completely terrible for people doing fractals for skins.

Until fractal players have a decent way of getting skins (non-RNG or a much, much, much higher drop rate), I don’t think a reward track should be implemented. Even the effort of getting to level 30 is pretty hard for the average player. Once there’s a fix to make getting fractal skins more reliable, then I’d totally be on board with a PvP reward track.

Fractal Skins are very very difficult to get from Fractals.

Every time you conplete a full fractal set, you have a LESS THAN 1% chance to get the fractal skin you want. It’s pretty awful.

If they first added a way to buy fractal weapons with Pristine Relics or regular Relics, then sure, I’d be fine with this. But if they used the same reward track system for the Named Dungeons on Fractals in PvP, then it’d be far easier to get a fractal weapon doing PvP than doing fractals.

I’m fairly certain the point of this skill is to let you swap to your big bursty weapon (probably has an Intelligence Sigil on it) and unleash and attack, with no fear of Blindess. But because it can just get reapplied, it’s actually completely and utterly useless for that.

Having it remove blindness and then adding 1 second of immunity would let you get that hit in without allowing the Warrior to run around with 60% blindness immunity uptime (thanks to 5 second weapon swapping).

Casual Fun PvP build - Celestial Spellslinger

in Elementalist

Posted by: Neko.9021

Neko.9021

Credit to Cryokenesis for showing how strong Offensive Cantrips can be. This build wouldn’t exist without him

This is a casual, fun PvP build that I’ve been playing around with in PvP formats. I’m not sure if it’s ‘optimal’ for the Ele, but I think that it’s very fun, and allows you to play very aggressively thanks to running Spellslinger and Four Cantrips.

Here is the build.

The idea is to run a very aggressive D/D Elementalist relying on double Cleansing Fire as condition removal. Because of this, you can continue to lay pressure versus someone applying Conditions to you without having to swap to Water and roll around.

The Might stacks you get from aggressive use of Cantrips (such as Burning Speed with Lightning Flash) allow you to put a surprising amount of sustained and burst damage on a foe.

No Ether Renewal or Mist Form. These skills ruin your tempo. You either burst someone, or disengage with RTL. Trying to stick in a fight in melee while trying to get Ether Renewal off will generally hurt you more than it will help.

This is ultimately a skirmishing build with a good amount of sustain and damage. In other words, it’s simply another take on the various Cantrip Elementalist builds that Eles have played with since launch. The big difference is that running double Cleansing Fire puts an offensive twist on this sort of build.

Also, because you’re getting such a good amount of Vigor and Regen thanks to Soothing Disruption, you really don’t need Renewing Stamina. Windborne Dagger gives you movement speed mobility without having to re-attune to Air or blow an Aura to get it.

Basically, this build is all about tempo. Play aggressively to win.
