Will all of the Meta-Messiahs please hurry up and publish the exact builds you are requiring for each profession you’ll allow in your raid party? I’ll need detailed gear lists (weapon, armor, runes, sigils, trinkets) as well as skills to equip and a rotation for pressing my buttons. I’ll put my character together exactly as you require and practice until I am good enough at doing exactly what I’m told to please you. Then I will get the coveted chance to complete a raid in record-setting time. It won’t be ‘playing’ at all; it will be a job. But really, why play when you can work?

No. You won’t complete the raid in record-setting time. Without the “meta” you won’t be able to finish it at all.

I think only average and below average skilled players are constricted by the current Meta. Because these players are less skilled they have to bring the “best comp” to clear content.

The good players can most likely play what they want because they can play it at a higher skill lvl. These players usually define the Meta by testing and finding the best solutions for problems.

Uhm… I not sure but I thought our current “meta” would also be the highest skill lvl? (For dungeons). I can’t imagine pros playing something else than zerk to do an easy dungeon lol.

Of course there will always be people pushing “the meta.” But those are just stupid people being stupid. I play what’s fun for me.

No one is pushing any meta. Metas develope over time through and with the community.

You seem not to understand what meta actually means. But kudos to you for playing the way you want. If more people would do so, this disscussion and bs would not exist.

Plenty of people in-game push it. “RUNNING BLAHBLAH DUNGEON 80S EXP IDIOTMETABUILDONLY PING CHEST!”

I understand what it is, I just don’t agree with saving a small amount of time over having more fun playing the game.

PHIW mightn’t be against the existence of ‘a meta,’ but the PHIW crowd in this game have refused to acknowledge the freedom they’ve had for the past three years to play the game however they darn well want to and instead just complain about people who clear content faster than them.

Hahaha! Yes, it’s all jealousy on their part, that must be it. =P

As an aside, if PHIW is meant to be “Play How I Want” and being used to categorise a certain play style, if you really want to coin a phrase for that style of play then I feel a more accurate representation of that player group’s mind set would be shown with “PHYW”, Play How You Want.

The people interested in perpetuating a specific meta are the ones insisting that other players should conform for optimisation purposes, everyone else is more welcoming and inclusive of alternative play styles.

Just a semantics thing, but it’s little touches like that that do betray a certain prejudice in the OP’s writing. “Play How I Want” makes it sound like that player’s primary motivation is selfishness, ruining meta-runners gold gains per minute or some other such foolishness, whereas “Play How You Want” is much closer to the reality of being motivated by inclusiveness and friendliness.

To an elite player and a farmer another player is a resource – an NPC – a bot – something that gets something done – I for example have absolutely no interest in why people who don’t run meta builds don’t run them.

Harper, that’s not the hallmarks of an “elite” player, that’s the hallmarks of a psychopath.

Oh no, I think PHIW fits the crowd and the mentality just fine. Especially with the semantics you just mentioned.

That’s… nice?

I really don’t follow you, sorry. How is wanting to promote inclusivity the same as being selfish?

Do you think that someone who welcomes everyone wouldn’t extend that welcome to someone running zerker stats? If so, then, I’m sorry that your personal experience has led you to that assumption but it’s incompatible with my personal experience.

Yeah, that reply may require more explanation than just a back-handed throw-away comment from you.

The PHIW crowd you refer to are the most vocal about change. Honestly, most players running zerker gear could care less what others play. They search for like minded people and everything is fine.

On the other side your typical PHIW player will want to change the current meta so their build is forced on other players. While under the guise if pretending to want to have the game opened to more builds, in essence it mostly boils down to just:“I want MY build to get taken along.”

Hence the PHIW fits perfectly. Also I disagree that PHIW players are inclusive. Quite the contrary.

So, you’re saying that people who play the way they want rather than following the meta, actually want to change the meta so that they’ll be following the meta? Isn’t it more likely that they just don’t care about the meta or don’t find the current meta play style fun? Cos that’s the “PHIW crowd” that I was referring to.

If your definition of PHIW is that narrow as to exclude the people I just mentioned then it probably shouldn’t be the term that you use to describe… whoever it is you’re talking about.

By the sounds of it, if most zerker players don’t care what other’s play then those zerker players actually are PHIW players. It just happens that the way they want to play is zerker.

I think it’s more like that most of the people who complain, on the forums especially, about the strictness of the meta are complaining that the way they want to play isn’t the most desired way. It’s pretty bizarre to think of it like that, I know, but unfortunately that’s how it is.
That’s why Anet is introducing the need for dedicated healing – they listened to what they though the PHIW crowd were asking for.

They will be more welcome, but not in every group. Just like not every zerker will be able to join any group (example: a zerker wants to join a group full of zerkers already).

If anet balances the fights (AND the professions) the right way that results in a meta like 6 berserkers, 2 sentinels and 2 clerics (as I already said) you could play so much more that isn’t berserker, sentinel or cleric by playing a mix of them BASED on your group. For example 4 berserkers, 4 soldiers and 2 clerics or 4 berserkers and 6 celestials without needing 10x more time to complete the content than the current meta.

The main reason why you can play what you want right now is that the content is relativly “easy”. However if you decide not to follow the meta right now it will take MUCH LONGER which isn’t a good design.

Also isn’t a big part of an MMO playing your own role or better FINDING your role in a group? Remember that raids aren’t meant to be played in a pub and that you and your group must find the right combination of professions, builds and equipment (that you own) to succeed the content.

Obviously that won’t be that easy for anet to make because of the profession balance, but that’s what they said and aimed for. If they are able to deliver on what they said the new (raid) meta could be one of the best, most flexible and most BALANCED metas.

But anet said you can play what you want. “If your druid is off and can’t play you can take your necro and replace him and still do the raid”

Unless of course they lied.

You can play what you want, it may not be the most efficient set up but so long as it is possible, it is not a lie.

Yeah this means many will be able to be “the healer” probably. The same way everybody is able to deal damage and don’t see people saying “lf1m ele ZERK OR KICK”

Once again, you see that because it is the most efficient/effective, it can be done without a specific setup though. People always want the path of least resistance, that doesn’t mean it is not possible by taking a different path.

Sometimes its good to take the scenic route rather than the highway that cuts off a fraction of time but is so much more boring.

Once again, you have no idea what the point of the thread is.

He said people will be forced to have a druid which simply isn’t true (or shouldn’t be).

Let’s say the new meta won’t be 10 berserkers but something like 6 berserkers, 2 sentinels and 2 clerics. (dd, tank, healer)

Do you really think you will be now less welcome when you play berserkers or cleric? Zerkers might get a little less welcome (but is still the majority) but clerics have finally a place. (While obviously not every class will be able to be cleric you can still play something else)

Also remember that the meta is a “guideline” too. 5 zerker is the best, but 4 zerker and 1 soldier is also still alright (Not as bad like 5 clerics).

Now do that with my new example meta and you will see that you can actually MIX and be a hybrid of the meta. Something like 2 bersekers, 4 soldiers and 2 clerics could be just as good as the actual meta! Or maybe even 4 zerker and 6(!) celestials.

There are SO many possibilites suddenly. Nothing like the current zerk meta could accomplish.

Never got the hate for trinity. From a design standpoint its better to have something like a trinity to create encounters around, which can make fights much more interesting. Without its more of just an orgy hoping the dps output can outmatch the dmg received.

What would have been interesting is if they kept a trinity like structure, but allow any class to fill the roles in one way or another. This would require some creativity obviously.

Right now its just jack of all trades, master of none.

The problem with no “trinity” or ROLES is balancing. The professions aren’t balanced around any roles and because of that they are completly unbalanced for certain encounters.

I would like that especially when you can do content as a hybrid.

Let’s say the “meta” would be something like:

  • 2 healers, 2 tanks and 6 dds

I think it would be nice if you can also go in as one of these and still beat the content in a decent time:

  • 1 healer, 2 tanks, 5 dds and 2 healer/dd hybrids
  • 2 healers, 1 tank, 5 dds and 2 tank/dd hybrids
  • 0 healers, 2 tanks, 4 dds and 4 healer/dd hybrids
  • 0 healers, 0 tanks, 2 dds and 4 healer/dd hybrids and 4 tank/dd hybrids

and so on!

Now imagine what might happen over time as people mastered this content.
They might figure out that they can take less healing and less tanking and a bit more dps once they completely master this encounter. They might even realize that some classes can still manage to do certain tasks successfully while putting out more damage than the predefined tank or healer.

It has happened in all of the trinity games I know!

The only difference between the trinity games and GW 2 is that here we are able to include 100% dps classes in our party compared to the 80-90% we’d use in other games. The support/healing/tanking that 20% of those parties will have is just split between everyone (well almost) in any given GW2 dungeon party.
If they made boss fights so hard and last so long that this little bit of support that the entire party brings together is no longer enough then suddenly we would have to use the parties I mentioned above. It is mainly a matter of balancing the duration and the difficulty of any given encounter.

The problem with no fixed roles is BALANCING. GW2 does the same thing as you said: Max your damage and fails at balancing. I don’t want to know how bad that will be if they add actually super hard content.

I don’t understand why you didn’t took the total completed events of the maps into account for the rewards.

Why not something like this?:

(Your stacks) * (Events completed on the whole map) * ~0.1 = (Numbers of Mordrem Blooms you get)

And your own stacks should have some maximum that you can get without TAGGING events but by simply completing them, maybe 10.

Also add normal random loot from mobs like almost any mob does.

Also, I don’t like the idea of nerfing the cannon phase. The cannon phase is what’struly unique and special about the fight. Its “central gimmick” if you will. I’d rather see the cannon phase extended in some way, perhaps in stead having the players fight horrik during that phase in stead of the rage/poison thing.

Well in my case your arena would already be filled with some aoes. Not sure how much harder it would be.

Stopped reading OP at Mai Trin. That fight is awesome.

It’s so boring. Lure Mai Trin to blue sparkle field 2-3 times then destroy her 25% health.
Rinse, repeat.

Well IMO it’s a simple and balanced mechanic and yet still challenging for some.

It’s clear that this fight shouldn’t be labled as “THE BEST FIGHT” but with more “gimmicks” it could be VERY interesting.

Phase One:
-Horrik is the same but can be attacked (again) and only has Cannon Blast (again).
-Mai Trin is the same (cannot be attacked) but has a new Poison Aoe skill which she throws after a 5 second ‘targeting’ delay at the location of a random player (the targeted player has a sign above his head when targeted so he can move to set the position of the aoe). The Poison Aoes will last for ever and deal damage if stepped on. However there can’t be more than 10, a new one will remove the oldest.

After Horrik loses 24% HP he will rage and you enter Phase Two.

Phase Two:
-Horrik can’t be damaged and charges/attacks a random player. If Horrik enters a Poison Aoe he will stop the rage after a 10 second delay. Additionally he removes each Poison Aoe he stepped on but also gains an attack/cast speed buff for each Poison Aoe he removed for the next phase.

After the rage ends you enter Phase Three.

Phase Three:

-Horrik also starts to cast Electric Blast now too (works just like right now)
-Mai Trin stops placing poison aoes and can be attacked if hit by Electric Blast (also just like right now)

When Mai Trin loses 25% HP you enter Artillery Barrage Phase.

Artillery Barrage Phase:

-Still the same however the not remove poison aoes will still be there!

After the Artillery Barrage Phase you enter Phase One again.

Notes:

(Horrik can’t die and will stay alive with ~4% till Mai Trin dies)

If you understood that congratulation! What do you think? Better? Worse? Or still the same?

The important thing here would be that you place the Poison Aoes right and remove the right ones so you have enough place to dodge the Artillery Barrage Phase. Also the Artillery Barrage Phase would need to be nerfed slightly so it’s not impossible.

Neox.3497

If an ele can specc pure heal for one boss and maximum fire dps AoE Meteor bangbang for the other it is was more diverse than to have a heal ally the whole time.

This will result in people playing the best professions with the best builds for each encounter meaning it will either be too easy with the perfect setup or impossible with many other setups.

Ele is super good at dealing damage with build A and is super good at healing with build B.

How many other professions are able to do that? If boss 1 needs a lot of damage and boss 2 needs a lot of healing what profession would you take if you are able to change your build?

We will probably end up seeing people even changing professions after each boss in order to kill him faster and easier.

Build Locking

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Neox.3497

And who knows, the raids currently may not need a ton of gear/build swapping around from boss to boss for non-speed runners.

That, simply, cannot, happen. Raids were brought in the game to satisfy the needs of the hardcore crowd. If build swapping is allowed, you can bet your important personal asset that it will be required. If it’s not, then those who tailor made their builds, will find minimal challenge in the whole affair and after a while the complaints will start. How arena net didn’t offer what was asked. To top it off, if it’s not required to finish the content that means casuals will be able to do it also, further devaluing an already devalued aspect of the game and raids will be considered another “failure”.

Understand this please, hard and challenging content -cannot- be completed by the majority of the players in the game, if it does, it simply isn’t challenging. Content like that is there for the few, those who will put in the time, effort and persistence. It’s like asking for everyone on the pvp ladder to be able to reach the top tier. It cannot happen. It devalues the thing. Please don’t ask for raids to cater to the 10 strangers who met at queensdale and decided to go raiding.

The new skills and traits shouldn’t be earned with the old hero points. Something like a unique quest chain for each profession with LORE would be so much better.
To play WvW seriously you have to be level 80 and play PvE content (at least the first time) and I think a not too long quest chain wouldn’t hurt most WvW players.

Build Locking

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Neox.3497

If the difference between build locking or not means the content is easy or hard, then raids have failed before they even started. Content can be made difficult with the ability to change builds. Build locking shouldn’t be what makes it difficult or not. So why force everyone to build lock? When a good number of players will never have experienced that in GW2, when it will only frustrate the casuals.trying out raids? And if you want ANet to invest in raids, then you need more than the hardcore elite doing them. Which means you can’t chase the casuals away. And build locking would likely chase the casuals away. They won’t want to risk long hours inside only to realize that they need a trait that no one in the group has so they have to restart in order to be able to complete the raid.

But if they made it optional setting that increased quantity or quality of the reward, then most casuals would be fine with that. They can work out what traits are needed in the build unlocked side and switch over to the build locked side when their group feels comfortable with their builds. And the hardcore can start with the build locked side for the challenge and risk.

If they include gear swap it is FAR from being casual. Hey you want to do this? You need gear A, B and C. Go farm that!
Also build swaps is more a tryhard thing. I’m pretty sure casuals rarely swap their skills for a coming fight.

Build Locking

Neox.3497

This is a very good question but it will probably be not locked. This will even further support a meta for each encounter meaning each boss will be even easier to finish (if you have the right gear and profession).

If anet intends and forces you to have different builds and gear that really doesn’t sound like “play what you want”. That would also mean you have to farm all kinds of gear and at the end it will end up anyway with stuff like profession A is better than B.

I have no idea how anet wants to do that. Either the content will be too easy with the perfect setup (meta setup) or you will NOT be able to play what ever you want. You can’t avoid both.

No more full zerker meta

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Neox.3497

Neox.3497

And the beauty of it is that even if they do add this – people will migrate to the next-in-line best DPS gear that allows them to live and that will become the new “zerker”.

The trick here is that they can’t add unmitigateable damage for some players only – so they get to tank while others can do something else. They either add it for everybody – and we all are forced to let’s say Knight – and Knight becomes the new zerker or they don’t add it at all – in which case there’s no real reason to take tankier gear if you can mitigate your damage.

They can. Some random mechanics:

-The nearest player receives high damage (can be even multiple players like 2 or 3)
-An aoe field appears and one players has to step in and receive high damage. If no player steps in the whole raid receives high damage instead.
-Orbs spawn and travel randomly through the arena. They explode and deal damage if touched. They ONLY disappear when someone touches them. (Meaning if not touched(removed) the arena will be filled with them at some time)
-A random player gets frozen. To unfreeze the frozen player another player has to go near the ice and interact with it. The helping player will receive high damage.

And the best thing is if you have such mechanics you can even have “reverse” mechanics like attacks that deal % damage which tanky players should avoid instead.

There are millions of possibility to indirectly “force” differnt kinds of gear and skills. But looking at the announcement it seems that won’t be the case.

^This. There is nothing AT ALL wrong with the Trinity. The problem is when each class can only perform 1 role and then some classes perform that 1 role better then others which makes every other class that is locked into that one role useless. This is not an issue in GW2. Most classes can perform multiple roles and do them well. Sure some still need some work ,but the basis is there. We just need content that requires tankier built players and players built 100% around group support (This means Healing Power).

The main reason for that is because in GW2 all the content is way too easy. In other MMOs with roles and classes each class is good enough to clean the general easy content too.
The problems only appear when it gets very difficult.

wildstar didnt lose players because of the raids. wildstars PvE content is probably the best on MMO market atm. the game had and still has alot of other issues that led to players leaving the game.

thats the worst response ever. challenging group content. CHALLENGING. do you realize what that means? it means no easy mode, no win on the first try, improve teamplay and your individual skills to get it done. it means some players will fail forever if they are not willing to put in the effort and get better at the game.

The problem is, that’s what the dungeons (and fractals) are currently for the vast majority of the players. When you ask about challenging content, you don’t really ask for it. You ask for a content that will be challenging specifically for you and those around your skill level.
That’s why, no matter how hard the future raids will be, they willl end up disappointing most of the people. For some they will be too hard, for others they will still be too easy. So, in the end, they will be tuned down so that the range of people for whom they will be fine will be the greatest.

Or, HOLD YOUR BUTT, 2 difficulties. And I’m not talking about that mess which fractals are with stupid agony resistance.

Normal and Hard. Normal can be Vinewrath/Tequatle and is open world. Hard can be Triple Trouble and harder and is instanced.

Hard gives 3x “more” loot than Normal.

There, nubs can do it and can get eveything. Pros can do it too and get everything faster.

That would be great but the recent changes counter that completly.

By making conditions stronger they sure help condition players however it will simply depen on what does more damage. Zerk or condi? Since both stack now.

If they would ONLY buff conditions WITHOUT removing the cap you would end up with something like 4 zerk 1 condi but since the cap is gone it will either be 5 zerk or 5 condi.
Unless both are idendical in terms of damage.

Let’s say you have 100 players dealing damage.
Getting Vulnerability to let’s say 200 would TRIPLE their damage.
Also just one stack of Vulnerability alone would mean you have one addtional player. (1% of the damage of 100 is the damage of 1)
People would go for full Vulnerability in open world and zergs since it increases the damage much more then all other Conditions and Skills.

Nobody can say. It could deal more, it could deal less. If you have some vulnerable I could imagine it will be higher.

However with the changes to condition AND the trait system there will be a LOT of balance and “meta” changes.

What happens to exp when you max masteries?

Nothing. But who cares?

If staff can be melee, spear can be land.

as you are posting here, it is safe to assume that you have played GW2. So how have you missed how weapons work in this game? They are placeholders for abilities rather than equipment. Yes, a spear can be a land weapon, but it is not like other games where you can create a new skin/mesh and say “does x dice damage”. You have to create a skillset for the weapon. Yes, this can be done. But it is not very satisfying to just copy another weapon skillset, it should be unique, be in balance with other weapons and last but not last useful.

Elite specs add new weapons to professions and need new weapon skills and animations. There is nothing that stops anet from adding a water weapon as land weapon.

Do you see zerker players complain about tanky builds being able to run through 80% of the pve game without ever having to dodge or pay attention to what is happening around them? No.

Do you see tanky players complain about zerker builds being able to run through 100% of the pve game 10 times faster? No.

Yeah, actually I do.

I’m talking about open world. If it’s included in your “PvE game”.

Spear for land would good. Underwater weapons (skins) have almost no use and seem like wasted work. Making them avaiable on land for some classes as weapons could fix that.

Obtena: A lot of us are done holding out. I was very interested in Wildstar, but not for $60. Now its $20 with a free trial and soon F2P. Been playing it for about a week, and having a blast.

Haha exactly like me just that it wasn’t only the initial price but the very bad performance.

If the path is invalid the first skill should act like a “tp” with a delay (maybe 2-3 secons) I would say.

I hear ya Vayne, that’s a valid concern, but:

You should be saying “make everything tradeable” instead of “don’t make dungeons”, because unless you follow that up with “…or pvp modes, or wvw maps, or living story episodes, or special world bosses” you’re a hypocrite who just wants to edge out the part of the game you don’t like so nobody else will have new dungeons either.

still this^

And I’d be saying it, if this is what Anet had been doing but it hasn’t. So I don’t want raids if the reward structure doesn’t change, because I don’t suspect it will change.

If everything was tradeable I’d have a lot less issues. But I think it’s more likely we won’t get instanced raids than Anet will change their loot policies of recent months.

So you why aren’t you protesting stronghold, PvP, LS, etc etc? Why just instanced content?

You really think including a few dungeons with HoT would kill the game? You think that would be “catering” to a minority, by adding a few things for hardcore players alongside a ton of casual content? You’re not making any sense.

The problem are not some dungeon .. the problem is the cry for hardcore
dungeons for a limited player base with exclusive rewards that only these
few players will get.

For me you can have dungeons where you need 20 hours to kill one single mob
as long as the rewards are not significant different than in the normal version

Problem is, without those better rewards nearly nobody will play that stuff
so its wasted developer time.

And i can’t remember to hear from the PvP or WvW Players all the time that
they want exclusive stuff.

Not exclusive but “better” or “more” would be good for the start.
Just did 2 hours of super hard content? Get stuff that you normally get for 6 hours of super easy content.

Kinda regret crafting a GS.

I got a “nice look” comment once on my ~lvl 70 thief that had none-transmutated equipment and just dyes I choose

Also most of the time I see a Sunrise I think “meh”. Guess you had a lot of luck, have rich and nice friends or just farmed a lot.

That reminds me of a guy who did a dungeon and failed at a boss. He and his friend change to zerk and suddenly they were able to kill the boss.

That doesn’t, however, mean much. There are plenty of reasons why someone might fail at something, and if your main problem is not having enough DPS, it’s hard to imagine zerker gear not helping.

But it’s like you NEED enough people with zerker (or other types of damage) otherwise you will fail. Which isn’t the “philosophy” by anet about “play the way you want”.

No you don’t. You can do anything in PvE with whatever gear you want. There are videos out there where parties run Arah in clear gear without dodging once and they did fine. Hell, there’s even videos about people running dungeons naked. You don’t need zerker gear to be successful in PvE.

Anet didn’t lie to you when they said that you could play gw2 how you wanted to. Every gear is viable, even going naked.

Check the thing I quoted first.

If you define PvE as dungeons and nothing but, sure.

I thought zerker “problem” occurs only in dungeons/fractals. In the progressive and tolerant open world everyone plays what they want.

Because open world is easy as kitten. You could play open world naked and you could get everything with no problem. Especially if you play with other players. ZERG 4 LIFE! I guess?
