Why doesn't Guild Wars 2 have more of a social appeal?

Games can’t force people to be social, even with restrictions. People don’t want to do things if they don’t have to or don’t get rewarded for doing so.

Ultimately it’s up to ANet to provide content that’ll promote participation and teamwork through a combination of challenging/rewarding content.

If it’s too challenging people won’t do it.
If it’s too rewarding people will do it but will take the easiest way to accomplish it, which leads to avoiding social interaction.

But, I’ll have to disagree, because of the lack of party restrictions and because of the enemy tagging/resource tagging systems in this game, it’s the most social MMO I’ve played. Plenty of people on my server participate in events they pass through, or when I call out for help in map chat. In other MMO’s, having more party members during open world quests is a hassle.

GW2 needs to adopt WoW's LFG system and here is why.

People PUG exp mode dungeons all ready, and people who want to avoid the problem simply don’t PUG anyway.

Yes, it is fairly easy to PUG now, but having an LFG would make finding a group almost instantaneous and we won’t have to run into map chat restrictions.

There’s absolutely no detriment to having an LFG system, and I believe ANet’s either looking into it or are working on it (seriously, don’t quote me on that.). Though since finding groups is fairly easy now, It makes sense that it’s not a priority feature.

“were I am not getting out geared by people who play more than me.”

yeah god forbid a game reward people for you know playing the game, what a silly concept.

Rewards are fine, but I shouldn’t have to spend 50 hours grinding for stat gear to experience new content. I appreciate content that’s locked out based on difficulty, not gear requirements.

Agree with mostly everyone here.

Carrots are good, but the fact that it’s not mandatory to chase one to participate in content is even better. Still, rewards are important, and I can’t wait to see what sort of other rewards Anet’s looking to dish out other than cosmetic gear. (this is why we need mounts :O)

1 People call out for dungeon/ groups/members in LA and in the respective dungeon zones all the time. Even when you do have to wait, you can do other things while you wait.
2 ?? – If people need to replace you, they will replace you.
3 See number 1, it’s not that big of a deal to search for a replacement.
4 If members of the group are bad, use the kick feature. If the entire group is bad, leave the party.

Maybe you’re having these issues on your server, but I’ve had no issues waiting for a dungeon group to form. Give it a shot, it’s a shame you’re missing out on a ton (33 dungeon paths) of content, and not to mention rewards.

I understand what you guys are saying, and have been doing those things.

I can tag enemies better than some classes with my whirling wrath, and I do hit up nodes whenever I can, even the regulars, but it all feels like small potatoes in a very repetitive environment. Orr feels like a very poor end game.

I’m going to start going with the dungeons whilst doing Orr.

Appreciate the comments.

I guess the real question is, what do you plan on saving up for anyways? I’m not even gonna bother making a Legendary. 200-300g for a precursor (plus a myriad of other stuff you need to buy?), no thanks.

I don’t make too much money, but I don’t really need to buy anything other than crafting mats to level up weapon and armor smithing. I buy my exotics with dungeon tokens, so I don’t really know what else to spend my money on.

Farming high level crafting materials in Orr for a few hours could net you a decent amount of money.

Can’t man. 40 odd people doing every event, can’t tag anything, and diminishing returns kills it when you can. Not feasible on my server at least.

I’m talking about farming nodes. I don’t think you get DR for farming crafting nodes, do you?

If you’re getting DR for events, just leave the zone and farm somewhere else, then come back. It also helps to be in a farming party so you have an easier chance to tag stuff.

doing dungeons is an ok-ish way to make money.

sadly, dungeons in this game are an effing chore, handsdown the absolute worst implementation of dungeons I have ever seen in 15 years of online gaming, and practically noone wants to do them beyond their first history mode run.

I LOVE them (the dungeons), but there are certain bosses which are a chore, I will agree. Overall, I disagree, they’re very fun once you get the hang of them.

glad to hear you like them
sadly the other 99,9% of the game’s population doesnt share your PoV

I always see people calling out for exp dungeon’s in map chat. Yes, they’re a chore when with the wrong group, but they’re designed to be completed with full team coordination in mind. A lot of the dungeons need polish, yes, and the rewards aren’t as rewarding as people would like, but there are plenty of people still willing to run exp dungeons.

I’ve clocked in about 300 hours and I’ve never felt the need to buy gems with real money.

I’ve bought plenty of gems, sure, but I use in game gold, which you’ll just naturally accrue by running dungeons, vendoring blues and greens or selling at the TP if you’re lucky enough to sell at a higher price, salvaging yellows for ecto, or farming crafting materials.

I like to explore low level zones, and with the heart quest rewards, event rewards, and selling drops, you can make a decent amount of money.

Agreed. Fighting dragons with 5-10 people provides a better experience. I read somewhere that the DE’s are supposed to scale in difficulty? If that actually worked properly when there are 20+ people doing DE’s, CS would be pretty fun and exciting. I also read somewhere that DE’s are supposed have an element of randomness? Not really seeing that in CS atm.

Too many visual effects ?

NetherDiver.6079

I agree with this. I love this game’s combat, but it’s VERY hard to know when to dodge. It’s funny that our spell effects are more vibrant than the effect used when an enemy is charging up for a devastating attack. You would think THAT effect should overpower everything else, it’s the most important.

I’d love to see an option to turn down the opacity/size of these effects. I love the way the look individually, it makes your attacks feel really powerful and good to use, so I’d hate to see ANet change them or anything. But there needs to be a way to make the action clearer without sacrificing the visual fidelity.

Crazy Animations

I agree. It’s very hard to keep track of what the boss is doing. It’s important to know the enemy’s animations to prepare to dodge a devastating attack, but it’s hard to do that when there are 5-10 particle effects happening at the same time.

The particle effects are beautiful, but I think the issue is that some of them are too large. My greatsword (guardian) slice particles are 4x the length/width of the enemy I’m slicing. Top on 4 other party member’s spell effects and the enemy is just a glowing ball of fire/smoke/slices/lighting/wtf.

I’d love to have an ingame option to decrease their effects/size/opacity or to do the same for effects that belong to everyone except me.

I’m pretty sure Anet stated that the explorable dungeons are designed around a group of players that know what they’re doing, ie. NOT pugs. Sure, the encounters force you to build your character a certain way, but isn’t that the point?

Motivation to level

Once you hit 30 do dungeons. You’ll get at least 90% of your experience bar after each run. You don’t need to spend much money in crafting if you gather everything you see (which also gets you exp). If you want to level as fast as you can, there’s absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t do everything, as everything gives exp and you’re not doing the same thing over and over.

Why we shouldn't be forced to explore...

But isn’t exploring one of the things that makes MMO’s fun? You’d like to grind instead?

Heck yes I’m only playing this game to rush to 80, I really want an account of all max alts. What happened? I remember the phrase “Play it your way” in an interview or something. Playing it my way would be playing the traditional MMO, which is running and grabbing multiple quests and then doing those quests for exp. I don’t want to explore, and I couldn’t possibly care less about exploring tbh…

I’m asking questions not because I defend any particular argument, but merely because I’m curious about why people play a certain way. If you’re playing this game to max out characters, something you can do in any other MMO, why are you playing THIS game in particular? This clearly wasn’t designed for you to grind character growth. I’m sincerely curious, again, I don’t defend any side of the camp, I just find this stuff interesting.

For me personally it’s about the storyline…I just want to experience the story. I can’t though because they dropped the ball for players like me who hate exploring because it’s a snoozefest and a chore, yet need to so we can level. I’m not going to bash people either who like to explore, I just thought that this game was going to be like GW1 in that respect that players like me who only wanted the story could experience it. I mean, I beat Prophecies I believe 12 or 13 times, and it certainly wasn’t for the gameplay or the endgame greens, it was because I loved the Prophecies story so much.

Edit: Also thanks for being respectful about it.

Huh, I can see why you want to get to the next level as fast as you can, just so you can experience the story quests. I never really thought about it like that. I personally, like to do everything in the PvE, crafting, exploring, story, events. And I am overlevelled for my story quest AND for the zones I’m in, simply because I like 100%-ing the areas I explore. It seems that’s how Anet designed the game, but it sucks that, if you JUST wanted the story/story related gameplay, you have to do stuff you don’t want to. Have you tried JUST doing events/hearts? Those have story elements too.

EDIT: And sure, no problem. I’m a game designer, and as much as I love this game and feel sucky when people bash it, I like finding out the reasons why people play games. It’s amazing how one person plays this game for VASTLY different reasons than someone else. I’m interested in how designers can accommodate different styles of gameplay without alienating a portion of the player base.
