Most players want to be challenged – sure – I can agree with you but not always. In fact I’m going to assume it’s a minority of times. People who use this game to destress and wind down prefer a more relaxed and chilled attitude where they don’t have to perform all the time.

They want the illusion of having done something hard but actually what they’ve done is easy. That’s what fuels their empowerment fantasy that they’re this kitten character that does this and that and beats stuff with his shiny swords and whatnot.

I can’t wait to see how the “hardcore” content is going to be handled.

People want to be entertained. Its pretty hard to make something really really easy entertaining.

That said if the difficulty feels impossible many wont be entertained. This isnt to say they must suceed, but they have to feel like success is attainable.

There are many tricky elements in achieving this. I dont think this game gets it right that often.

Considering the game is still around after 3 years, I would say it nails it. I’m not going to pretend to know how many players or revenues GW2 has, etc… but if the owners/shareholders of Anet haven’t pulled their cash out yet, whatever the game ’doesn’t get right’, it’s clearly working from a business POV.

I don’t think HoT is going to be harder than Vanilla. It’s just going to be the same level of difficult but in a different way. Really, I don’t think the question is if HoT should be harder or easier, but if it does something different. Perhaps getting away from predictable fights and active defenses … I don’t think the people that play this game really want something much harder, just something different.

Don’t listen to people that say there isn’t an optimal class … optimizing your Openworld experience isn’t just a matter of taking any level 80 in full zerker. There ARE optimal classes to do OW content. These are the factors I have considered:

1. Runspeed – Why? Because doing OW content is all about running between all the aresas on those maps. Best classes in this category here are the ones that have built in runspeed with signets (best) or traits (good). If you HAVE to use a class without these things, you can supplement with Sigil of Speed (very good option, can be used any level) or Runes of the Traveller (worst option, only at level 69+, expensive).

2. Damage – obviously, but the caveat here is good BURST damage that you can access frequently; this is very different than what people refer to as ‘meta’ builds, mostly used for maximizing dungeon DPS while teaming. The optimal builds for doing OW events, hearts, etc… is NOT necessarily the same as the dungeon meta builds. While leveling, the optimal classes can change as you get access to new traits but at level 80, some classes outshine others, mostly because they have multiple damage sources.

3. Resistance/Closing – closing a fight without conditions is important, as well as reducing your non-fighting downtime. Classes that have frequent and non-specific condition cleansing are optimal here as well as resisiting knockbacks, breaking stun and avoiding interrupts.

Based on these criteria, the classes that excel are Guardian and Thief, the worst is Mesmer. To be fair, I haven’t fully explored Ele’s OW capability but I don’t get the impression it’s that’s good.

“To continue playing the game after HOT launches – existing players would need to pay a nominal expansion fee of around $15 or there account would be suspended.”

Ya, no. That would be a kitten storm to end all kitten storms.

The question I would have to you and all existing player who have replied is: Will you or have you already purchased the expansion? If so, my alternative model just saved you $35.

Let’s be honest … $35 shouldn’t concern anyone playing an MMO so it’s not a motivating factor to change the business model to me. On the other hand, if $35 x QTY of prepurchases is meaningful to Anet, then I’m happy (and I suspect everyone else who prepurchased) to do it because I like the game enough and want it to be successful.

If this game was subscription based, I wouldn’t be playing it. It’s not about the money, it’s about getting VALUE for my money. For me to get value for a subscription, I have to play frequently. For me to get value from a one-time purchase, I only have to play as long as I’m still interested.

Two things I would look into if you do gathering; Lemongrass and Poultry meat. Mobs that drop the meat don’t have a good rate so the trick is to find a place with a high density of them.

Of course, if you don’t want to gather, there are more reliable and easier ways to make gold. Gathering is just a good time killer in between other events.

^^ While I agree that the theorycrafting isn’t an accurate model of how the game works, that’s not it’s goal. It’s simply to allow people to make informed decisions on weapon choice using damage as the only decision factor. There are other factors people can use to choose a weapon as well and that’s when the things you mention can come into play.

For example, FT from a damage perspective is not the best DPS for engi … but if you want to farm moa’s for poultry meat, it’s a great weapon with Juggernaut. There is something to be said for ignoring the context where a weapon will be used and I think that’s where some of the theorycrafting falls short; I’m frequently questioning people using GS rotations …. to farm trash in Orr. This just shows not everyone is able to think beyond what someone else tells them and I think that’s where Obal’s work is important.

There isn’t really a way to make Sword a good damage weapon because it doesn’t have much of the ‘add on’ stuff that makes it a nice Guardian weapon in the first place. It never did; that’s why I say it’s a filler weapon. It doesn’t really contribute to the Guardian concept. I think that’s a missed opportunity but hey, what would a Paladin- archetype be with out a sword weapon?

I get you. After they changed it I couldn’t unlock another achievement chest for ages, just because I didn’t want to do PvP. I kind of feel bad for people who have very limited time and struggle to get what they want. Let’s be honest, PvE dailies are really unpleasant to do. (Does anyone actually enjoy these “complete 4 events in this specific area” quests?) It kind of messes with new players trying to complete these as well, limiting their options to PvP and WvW which they might dislike.
I’m not sure why was the system changed in the first place.

I don’t understand this… even if you don’t like PVP, you can complete the PVE events quite easily. The only time I get an unfinished daily is when it’s a double fractal reward day. Otherwise, there isn’t a reason someone focused on PVE can’t complete the daily.

That ‘easy gold’ argument doesn’t hold water ever, otherwise, people would do ONLY the content that gives the most gold. If Megadestroyer was such a poorly rewarded event, you have to take a step back and ask why people do it. You can’t conclude Mega is a bad event because it’s payout per unit time isn’t the best. You know, it’s crazy but … some people don’t care about how much gold they get and LIKE events like Mega. Game caters to LOTS of people … and that’s why Mega is probably fine the way it is.

I don’t believe that ANet’s goal was to ensure that the there were strong relationships between all three of LB, traps and the DH traits. I glad these relationships don’t exist because if they did, it would mean that optimal builds with any one would require the other two; I don’t think that’s Anet’s approach to the game design.

What is disappointing is that there is little outside of the DH traits to encourage the use of traps; on their own, they seems limited usefulness. I’m still holding my breath to see if DH changes to increase the appeal of traps as well. The bleed thing is weak. Even if they did the standard but boring ICD reduction, this might be enough.

It’s not relevant to compare Warrior HP to Guardian HP and conclude there is something wrong with the Guardian class. These are old, tired discussions. Anet want the class to fill a team-support role. I believe that is why our HP is on the low side; we are urged to take advantage of our team as much as our team is to be taking advantage of us. That’s the role Guardians have. The choices for ‘things’ like HP, etc… reflect that.

Losing some damage is not what the OP is referring to. That would not be enough to make his build dead.

One DPS legendary? Yeah this class has already failed.

Or you didn’t check the class, or you just ignore it. Jalis is a support stance, Mallix is focused to conditions, Ventari offers heals… so there is a fourth legend/stance that will potence DPS somehow. This is the point.

Not only that but based on how the class works, how many DPS legendaries are actually necessary? I would say … just one.

Whatever threshold numbers you are looking for are completely subjective. No one can answer this question for you because it’s player-dependent. What is super tanky and not? Depends what stats you need to tank with. There are many people in this game that ‘tank’ with their base defensive stats, using pure zerker gear. Some of those people tank BETTER than someone in full Nomads.

As another example, you may encounter groups where the minimum desired stats is no less than a full exotic, zerker stats build. There is no real theorycrafting that has been done that puts a line in the sand and says “This number represents the boundary between bad and good DPS or defense”

It’s always an obvious and easy fix, no matter how complex it’s implications or hard to implement, to anyone that doesn’t understand what is necessary to do it. Frankly, if you died that much, you need to consider what has changed and how you can adapt to that change. It’s not your stats … it’s your build overall and likely how the traits have changed on you. I’m actually very curious to understand what this build was that was so devastated by the changes. Don’t be offended but being so affected by having an unwanted mime as you seem to be is not normal and I think it’s hardly a concern for the overall general population in the game. It’s simply a case of stars aligning; mime finds that ONE guy who happens to be the most negatively affected by their gameplay.

This is akin to people with extreme chemical sensitivities. So what do we do in that case? We can do little; it’s such an extreme exception that it is you that needs to make the effort to avoid the situation, even if it means you don’t play the game.

You’re not going to get any accurate statistics from a forum thread. I believe that Anet thinks reducing CD’s makes shield a more appealing proposition and to a certain extent, it does. I don’t think the solution is very good and obviously neither do you but I don’t think this approach to demonstrate that is a very effective one if your goal is to illuminate the issue to Anet.

What I think is going on here is that Anet thinks there is problem A, players think there is problem B. If we don’t have consensus with them on what the problem is, it’s REALLY unlikely we will get a solution that seems to make sense, regardless of how many shaming threads are made about it.

Yes, and they did that because it was the least bad option for the game as a whole, which is the more important consideration here. Yes, profits are the main consideration … Anet is a business and the owners motivation to fund it is ROI. Hard decisions have to be made sometimes that don’t benefit everyone. That’s life.

I actually don’t get the complaint. I’m struggling to understand how having an adept trait or not takes a character from playable to absolutely useless and stuck … at level 21. Hero points are continuously gained as the game is played. How does a character become stuck at this low level if they can earn the points to regain the traitline the player desires to have and traits are rather insignificant at those levels anyways?

I think the problem here is that people are trying to take advantage of Anet by pointing out an opportunity Anet missed because they don’t like how they were traited prior to the patch. That seems rather backhanded to me.

Has little to do with the most commonly spoken languages, otherwise we would see Spanish, Hindi and Arabic … but we don’t.

I think it’s definitely a matter of which languages are the most widely spoken in places where GW2 is sold.

How does this explain why we don’t see Spanish and yet have French? I think that Anet are a little more selective with their language choices based on regional success of GW1/2 because they actually have the market data to suggest what languages they should support, not based on how many people speak those languages where GW2 is available.

I think it also has to do with the idea that Anet already had made investments into specific languages in GW1. It’s simply a matter of using those assets in GW2 as well. I would find it really hard to see how Anet simply implements the most popular languages in places where GW2 is sold, It might be available, but we have little idea if that makes it popular in those places to justify the cost of implementing in that languages

I’m not going to pretend to know what is involved with unlocking the trait line you want at level 26, but I do know you can still play that character and unlock that trait by gaining hero points. Traits at level 26 are NOT so critical to your build that the few you have make or break your ability to function. SO how exactly do you unlock those traits? Answer: GO PLAY.

The fact you say you can’t get your points back from a trait you won’t use demonstrates you’re lack of understanding in how the game functions as you level. You get MORE than enough hero points to unlock ALL the traitlines, even if you don’t want them.

The point is, for the players who have low and mid level characters (and are keeping them at that level for whatever reason, or are slow levellers) the seemingly random way the points were put has made some characters pretty awful, with no way of changing it.

I don’t understand the problem for not-level 80s because of two things:

1. The hero points were not ‘randomly’ distributed by Anet on your character. In fact, Anet distributed the points as closely to your build you had on that character the day of the patch. If someone has such a bad build that it rendered the character unplayable … that says alot about that person’s build prior to the patch as well.

2. There is a way to change it because those points are earnable. Even if you have some out of place points … you will get more. It’s not even a choice. The game makes it so you get more than you need.

The active needs to apply atleast 3 burn stacks for it to be useful imo.

thats 15 stacks of burn on 1 target for 8 secs if your party is on the same target, 3 stacks is too much.

That’s true I didn’t consider the party wide effect. It seems really hard to balance around then, as one burning stack is nearly useless in a solo scenario and mediocre at best in group play but increasing the stacks from the active adds between 2-5 more stacks based on party size. Perhaps atleast 2 stacks? 10 stacks is not really feasible on a single person in pvp imo as AoE will trigger it on any random target.

I believe that Anet could do something more complex than currently activied VOJ to fix that. As an example … VoJ activated could give out 4 stacks of burning. That gets divided among you and people in your team who are within range.

If you are alone, you would get all 4.
If all 4 people in your team in range, everyone gets 1 stack, you get none.
If only 2 people in range, they get 1 stack each, you get the rest.

Balanced.

This game doesn’t tell you want to do, so if you are of the mindset that you have to do this and that, you need to change how you think. In fact, I think everyone playing this game coming from a more traditional MMO had to change many of the ways they think stuff worked.

The bottomline .. if you get a full set of Exotic gear, you can pretty much do whatever you decide in PVE. ln PVP, it’s even more simple because there is no levels or gear you have to achieve. It’s very open ended.

For instance, my goals are to not make bad decisions with how or when I sell my farmed mats on the TP. Doesn’t sound like much or even very specific but for me, it’s alot of fun to take advantage of things like selling lemongrass to people at historically high prices.

I did read it. Essentially the OP is complaining that Anet’s recent balance gave too much DPS to people. That’s not a bug and it doesn’t make DPS broken. That’s a NORMAL effect of changing something; sometimes it’s over, sometimes it’s under. Furthermore, Anet has ACKNOWLEGDED the most serious offending traits and is dealing with them.

So basically, the OP isn’t aware or is aware and is impatient. Either way, he’s complaining about something Anet is always constantly working on anyways so it’s not very valid.

There is one aspect missing from your experience OP … you say nothing about a guild. If you want help in PVE, being in a guild is a given. Asking random people in chat is not a thing.

Lots of content to cover but generally, his suggestions would work. Why? Because it’s what many other successful games have implemented for their ‘dungeon content’.

That’s why I don’t think much of it would ever get implemented in this game. This game has many innovative ideas; in fact I think Anet go out of their way to do things different than other games as a selling point. They don’t just do what everyone has done, even if it’s a proven approach. They try new things. Some of those things are less well received or don’t merge well with traditional game content.

I do think that some control over rewards and content difficulty would be in my top lists to add.

DPS is broken and we are tired of it

No. It’s about how DPS traits are now broken after the latest patch, the OP specified it in his second post on this thread:

It just seems like the DPS bugs are across the board. From PVP to PVE and including PVE mobs.

but some other posters understood it incorrectly and started the typical “Zerker meta is bad” debate all over again as if we don’t have enough threads about that already.

If that’s the case, then I would argue the OP is nitpicking. Find another game that doesn’t have bugs. I wish him luck. If they do exist, the don’t make the game unplayable or unpleasant.

Well this post did accomplish part of what I wanted. To get people talking about the problems and create a thread with lots of post to get devs attention.

I wouldn’t expect too much dev response. Devs are paid to not talk on the forums all day; the chance that any individual thread gets a dev to post in it is very low.

In addition, we have a good 3 years of experience to know Anet deals with bugs, etc.. the issue you have brought up. There isn’t really anything to discuss other than the fact that you need to be patient if the things you think are broken are on Anet’s list to fix. Tehy do address these things and they are pretty transparent about doing it.

What happened to "Play your way"?

i could spam this thread with examples of fun builds i played before that had their use and are now unduplicatable.

… and that would prove nothing except Anet has made changes that prevent you from playing those builds. If there is no combination of traits you can find to give you a pleasurable build, I don’t think your looking hard enough. In fact, whatever build you want to keep, there is one that is VERY similar under the current system that should be close to it. Sounds to me more like your complaint is simply that you don’t want to use new builds.

The definition of good QA and balance

I don’t see the problem here .. this is actually more indicative of the way the game is designed than anything to do with a specific class or skills. We already know the best approach to PVE is to kill before being killed. These individuals specialize in optimizing their gameplay to do that. If the video had a bunch of scrubs with the same builds, they would probably not do as well.
