Concept of Level is pointless in GW2

Personally, I’m against this.

The fact that you have gear tiers is, in my opinion, a good thing. For example, when I started, a friend of mine pretty much told me to just buy level appropriate gear from the TP every 5 levels or so. I did this for a while, until I got into crafting.

Once I got into crafting, I actually had to do more than just go from quest to quest: I started mining ore, chopping trees and picking herbs. I kept going back to the armorsmith and weaponsmith stations to make new gear whenever I was getting close or was already at the next tier of new gear. For me, the new gear kept me in the game. Leveling up to 50, 60, 65, 70 and 80 was all for the new gear. I had already decided on my utilities, which I haven’t changed much since the beginning. Similarly, I had been playing around with traits so there wasn’t much to expect in that regard either.

Also, I think you’re mistaking the point of the Effective Level. It isn’t there so that you’re forced to get better gear. It’s there so that you can progress at a pace that you like. Some like crafting, so they might completely out-level an area, say the 55-65 area, without ever being there. Others want to see the highest level area as soon as possible, resulting in ignoring the lower range areas for other races. And if you’re not planning to make an alt of every single race, that means missing out on pretty much 60% of the world. Both of these things happened to me: I got way too many levels from crafting my own weaponry and armors, so I had no real reason to stop at a certain 50-60 area at all, seeing that I had pretty much skipped that level range totally due to crafting. Similarly, by focusing on only the areas I was pointed to by the story, by the time I arrived at Cursed Shore, I had only 33% of the map complete, with the Asura, Norn, Sylvari and Charr areas mostly completely unexplored. And trust me, without level scaling, I could just blaze through those areas and I’d be forced to make an alt to get a fun experience out of it. And you never, ever, want to force people to make alts just so that they can get fun out of the game.

Effective Level also allows higher levels to educate lower levels without diminishing the experience due to being able to totally wtfpwn everything in their way. And that’s good, because a lot of games have an issue where lower levels get told to level up fast.

And I wonder, do you even realize that your suggestion is pretty much asking them to take most of the core mechanics of the game and re-invent them from scratch? That would be a ton of work.

Complaining that someone posted lower than you shows a distinct lack of respect for your customers.

The thing is, majority of these people don’t think about that. That is one of the reasons I personally dislike auction house style selling and it was one of the reasons I was originally not going to buy this game at all.

Personally, I’m not a cash shopper nor am I a farmer. I prefer to make my funds via trading, or “merchanting”, as it is sometimes called. Before GW2, I played an MMORPG that had both an auction house and a personal shop you could set up in the streets. I was able to make enough funds to be outright called a liar and I was told on multiple occasions that I must be a cash shopper.

One of the aspects I liked about that was the people. I’m not much of a people person, but it’s always good to see that you, as a tradesperson, have managed to get a good reputation as a fair and cheap merchant among your customer base. For me, maintaining that was very important. The better you handle the people who buy your goods, the more likely they are to return. Once this repeats, eventually they will stop looking for cheaper prices and trust that you have the lowest or close enough and come straight to you. And similarly, by having these regular customers that buy bulk, you are able to sometimes sell large batches of goods by giving them a special deal just because they decided to talk to you.

Sadly, GW2 has no such trading. Having only an auction house means that not only can the customers not go to sellers that they like, as they can’t know who’s selling, the sellers don’t get a customer base that has faces. This leads to people ignoring that aspect completely and just focusing on the profits. Which leads to stuff like complaining when you get undercut on sales and complaining when you can’t buy everything cheap.

Every dungeons should have a lvl 80 mode.

I disagree. There should be as little content exclusive at level cap as possible, to encourage those at cap to go back and do things. Otherwise areas will end up staying empty, which is already a problem.

Now, if you said a time-trail mode for Explorable Mode that’s available to all relevant levels, then I’d agree. I’d even agree with 10-man dungeons, as long as they were available during the levelling process.

But if you make content exclusive to cap, that’s all people will do. Look at Orr now, for example.

All true points.

Games that have most of their “good” content at the level cap always suffer from people rushing to the level cap and not doing any of the lower level stuff, which leaves the people who want to do them unable to.

As for Orr, I think the zone suffers from having no hearts. Since there’s only events that do a cycle, a lot of people are only around when there’s an event that has just started and leave immediately afterwards. I traveled on foot from Straits of Devastation to Cursed Shore, picking up waypoints and visiting Scouts as they popped up on my map. The only time I saw more than two people was when there was some event going on.

And honestly, I love the level scaling. Having done a bit of exploration to areas I never went to (low level Charr area), I was rather surprised to see how much weaker the monsters felt, those I suppose that has to do both with my level (80) and with the fact that I’m used to more durable mobs. But yes, I do totally intend to go around doing stuff. Not because I want some 100% completion trophy (I see a lot of people only care about that), but because the areas are so pretty and very diverse. Granted, there’s a lot of recycled skins like panthers, deer, Oakhearts, centaurs, Dredge and Drakes, but I still like how the world feels absolutely massive.

Also, dungeons are instanced. The last thing you want to do is encourage people to spend most of their time in an instance. That will just leave you with an empty, vast world. And that’s not good at all, as any new player who sees the vastness of the world, only to realize that it’s mostly devoid of players, isn’t going to have a good experience.

that would only matter if every single enemy clubs you on the head

That really isn’t my point. If anything hits you, you’ll be moving slowly. If you get hit with a flame blast, you’ll start running slower. If you get hit with an arrow, even more so.

Do you have any logic at all?

logic?what logic makes you run slower even if you dont get hit then?what logic allows enemies to run at the same speed in and out of battle.just because you get hit doesnt mean you will run slower.if someone hits your pinky does that mean you will crawl away to safety

Most of the time you’re getting hit with ranged attacks. Those are mostly of magical nature, so you can’t exactly argue either side on those.

With physical attacks though, yes, you will run slower. Ever play soccer and get accidentally kicked in the shin? Ever play baseball and have the ball hit your bicep? Ever play floorball and have the ball his you on the back of your hand? Ever prick yourself with a splinter of wood? Cut yourself with a piece of paper? Cut yourself with a knife? It does slow you down. That’s how pain works.

And beyond that, there’s the balance argument: if enemies ran slower when you attacked them, that would make cripple moves less effective and thus less desirable. And if the player did not get slowed, you could just breeze through all zones with or without Swiftness buffs without risk of dying. And that’s just silly.

Why would people complain about this?

Because it’s just silly seeing people running around wearing pants, hats, vests and whatnot instead of proper armor. And that just makes the whole experience feel like a middle age fashion show rather than an RPG about fighting dragons. And besides, if you do that, next you’ll have people demanding bikinis, thongs, skirts, underwear graphics and whatnot. And we don’t want to go there.

We can already swap armor skins and are free to change the colour of each piece of armor. And that’s way more prettifying you can do than most games.

Clicking? Pretty sure you’re supposed to use the F-key to search the corpses.

But yes, I might agree on it. I find that a lot of times in events I am running around corpses to get all the loot, which sometimes results in me missing a wave of opponents, which isn’t that bad. What I consider bad is that if everyone is busy doing that, then they’re all just going to get slaughtered.

The general guideline with item prices in an auction house is always “If it’s still there, it’s priced too high”. Of course, this can change with popular items or stable items.

Personally, I don’t do custom pricing too much. Mostly I consider the buy price to be enough. If there’s a huge difference, I’ll most likely put mine a bit below the lowest seller, but that would have more to do with wanting a bit of extra safety with my stuff, or because I think the price of said seller is kinda absurd.

So... how do I go about investing and getting a return?

The thing is, as long as there is any kind of inactive form of trading, whether it’s a player shop or an auction house, there are going to be people who put most of their time towards that.

And that’s pretty normal: You should never be forced to do a specific thing, such as farming or spending real cash, to acquire the gear you desire. That’s just bad design.

As for the point about everyone not profiting: Of course it’s not going to work that way. If everyone profits, everyone is wealthy, which also means no one is wealthy. Which will just end up with massive inflation. And let’s be honest, the last thing we need is inflating the costs when people are already discouraged from making it because the costs are mostly much higher than the coins you could make off it. Which, again, is another sign of a healthy economy.

Any market that is based mostly around an auction house depends about 60% on how much you know about item prices and 40% on your timing. Of course, with experience, the timing will start flowing to the knowledge part and then you’re pretty much set for a guaranteed profit. And it’s exactly because of the massive value put on knowledge, plus the high popularity of the game, that you won’t see people telling exactly what they do.

Forgot to add, need the ability to save armor combinations, was pretty much the whole point of the thread, to quickly and easily save between different armor builds

If you find yourself needing to swap out complete sets of armor between situations, you’re doing something wrong.

But if you really insist on it, at least make it cost some of the original materials, such as the respective insignia plus a coin fee. And add a decent cooldown to it to avoid it being abused.

empower solo players for events

I am against making the events soloable.

That would absolutely defeat the purpose. And you would never see the single boss events if they were all easy to solo. And that’s the last thing you want.

The game is already plenty soloable as it is. Heck, I am rather amazed that I have gotten to level 80 and I’ve only ever partied with a single person at any given time. I know games that are literally made so that you cannot solo them past the initial starter area.

Centaur-like creatures as professions and mounts

The new centaur like creatures are named Kall and they are former dragon minions which have escaped its influence when the dragon was put to sleep long ago. They are totally disoriented in the world because they were taken out of the underground when the dragon awaken and they don’t have a master anymore. They look like a centaur horse and they are in need of a master to guide them. They have the ability and the will to lean new skills and become more intelligent and develop a class for themselves.

So you want a mount that is effectively a half-human slave?

How weapons should have been done

I am fully against this. The current system is wonderful, as it means every single class and every single weapon set has a different outcome and that creates a massive amount of uniqueness. As long as you like the general premise of some race, you will find some weapon that you like.

And besides, they can and probably will add new weapons with new skill sets in the future.

And as was pointed out, there’s nothing preventing them from putting in weapons of the old types, e.g. greatsword, that have additional effects such as turning the F1 skill into a character-centric burning aoe. Or something.

Heck, just take a look at Sigils. Those are already adding unique stuff to your attacks. Same principle?

Eight Needed Game Improvements

Here are 8 changes/additions I would love to have implemented:

Short Version:
1. Remove Invulnerable Mobs
2. Remove Teleporting Fees
3. Dynamic Level Scaling = Area’s current level + (Character Level / 10)
4. Add timers to force advancement/reset broken events
5. Increase Defend events’ difficulty for each successive success
6. Be able to readjust trait points at will

1. It does get annoying, but allowing players to use walls and the like to basically cheese difficult content isn’t worth the sacrifice.
2. No, just no. The teleport fees are a good coin sink and it forces you to plan your actions ahead.
3. Nope. The dynamic leveling is good exactly because it makes everyone “weak”. Making a high level “overpowered” would defeat the purpose of having the system in the first place.
4. I would put my money on ANet working on improving the events, something like this being included in that.
5. Nah, I don’t think this is a good idea. I have and still can spend hours doing those rotating quests. And really, some of them don’t have too many people doing it, which already makes it difficult. Having it artificially bumped up because it was already completed a bunch of times isn’t good, it’ll just mean that the events will be deserted in the evening, which is probably when most people will play the game.
6. 3.5 silver for a total reset at level 80 isn’t expensive. Granted, I thought that I had to pay 3 Gold until I read this topic and to me that did seem a bit steep. But then again there’s lot of games that don’t allow restatting at all.

From what I’ve seen, those kind of armor are more often disliked than liked. Well, at least the former group is more vocal.

Personally, I prefer that the armor maintain some form of realism. Having played only a warrior, I can say that I’ve liked most of the heavy armors. They started out as mostly ringmail, then adding a bit of plate. The Barbaric set (level 80 masterwork) is also pretty cool since it’s a torn apart set of armor. And it’s well done, as the “torn” bit is ringmail, which would be much easier to break than plate.

One of the things that to someone who hasn’t played GW1 that makes GW2 stand out is in the art. Most of the armor and weaponry feels authentic, not something that they decided to throw in just because it looks cool. Of course, there are exceptions to that as well.

And really, this game doesn’t need to advertise itself with fanservice.

When did you switch out of Signet Warrior Build?

in Warrior

Olba.5376

Never.

Before I found signets, I found For Great Justice and Stomp. Those have been a crucial part of how I play since the beginning.

I do use Signets, of course. I generally run Healing Signet for sologrinding as together with Adrenal Health that keeps me healed up and it’s nice not to have to pay attention to my health that often. I also have Signet of Rage, since I find it to be the most useful Elite skill. Other than that, I tend to run Signet of Fury, Might or Dolyak depending on what I’m doing.

Of course, that’s largely because I have the Arms trait for +40 Precision per unused Signet. If not for that, I might be using Bull’s Charge, Shake it Off, Endure Pain, On My Mark or something like that.
