@Season, In general you want the chest and pants/helm for other stats than BZ, this as they contain more stats but a BZ is 4% crit dmg on chest aswell as say glowes. Wep is accurate.

@Anuxdei, tbh I do not think MV is one of the abilitys the dev,s talk about. You never know but I wait with plan for nerfs untill I see em on paper. Overall if mv not get nerfed but general aoe(fields with durration) life would be easier for thiefs and us as we immune spike dmg but often take steady ongoing dmg in big fights.

@Pimsley, Food and oil is used on my battle stats as I always use it, also add precision stacking sigil to staff and you gain atelast 100 preci (10 stacks) in any fight, in teamfights when you not wery often die and kill I often reach 25 stacks and keep it for long time., a swap to knight chest would drop your hp but gain more precision and toughtness, bump in some valk on another slot if you run low, say a jewel.

@Darx, I understand your doubt, I can thu for sure after hundreads and hundreds of hour testing say that the spec’s is not week.

The 1st spec is “weekest” vs conditions, this is why it demand more vitality gear, It also is based most around Juking, in and out.

2nd spec (hybrid) carry sigil of generosity who accualy lift some preassure, also it carry 2 (!) target drops, the whole Idea with the spec is to not get massive dmg stacked on you. If you do it by target drop, or immune (yes if you immune a attack before it land you immune the conditions aswell, but you cant immmune conditions already applyed).

3rd spec Do have both sigil of generosity, more passive defense and null field, here I cant say how you see any weakness vs conditions?

4th again is based around several target drops.

Thing is that yes, if you as a mesmer go and stand in the combat range of any class you most often die. If you stand toe to toe with a necro and soaking it you die. When you need to do is forget your passive defenses, they are not enought mate. What you do is juke in, deleiver a burst, drop clones and phantasms for dmg preassure and juke out. here you say (wait for heal up) but thats is a inaccuarae description. You instead keep prassue up, a few sec later you have cd,s and juke in and deliver dmg. this keep a steady preassure on enemy and you simply avoid get hit.

I also recomend se this movies for combat tactics with shatter mesmer, it might make it easier for you do understand the mecanics I talk about:

Could not think of a beter home for Judge the outmanned buff is the best measure for the amount of fun a evenig have to offer and that you deep enought in enemy terretory.

Thing is that most of the guilds who been in desolation from the start and stayed when al the guild jumping server party was going on, now carry a server pride. We poud of our scabby style and dented helmets, battle worn trash blades. It just show we uses the stuff.

So glad you instead of qq and troll a forum accualy posted a well written post presenting your problem and setup a thread for discuss and help eachother out in this matchup.

First, what I now write apply to wvwvw, cant talk for spvp/tpvp as I spend al my time in wvwvw eather in a tight core team or solo/duo roaming. I also run a guide on this forums in video and text.

I understand your problem, spent alot of time to duel compitent d/d 0-10-0-30-30 eles latley and its a hard work if you as you find a compient skilled player. I will add a elementalist section in my next video guide just cause of this.

Overall I must say, its doable. They have a great setup to avoid dmg, but the cc we have is more frequent so waht needed to do is wear their cc brakers down. Cripple and daze is my favorite setup for offensive moves vs d/d, combined with just as you say phantasms. The hybrid spec in my guide is working best so far after hard testing of my diffent spec.

Daze can idd me dodged, trick is to spread the range of clones, a sword phantasm who hit, 2 staff clones and yourself, unless they want to use a immunity its hard avoid al sources, and if they do you throw in a cripple. Remember they need water dodges to clear and regen. If you force em into water to clear cc,s they locked out when the burst come.

Also, if you in hybrid spec and know you will face a d/d in short you know is compitent, its worth change 15%phantasm dmg for boon stripp on shatters. It clear regen, ofc ther reapply but with constant shatters it wont have full upptime.

Also, know your strength and weakness, use terain and dont play in their terms, play unfair, go to los/hight different place and avoid big open fields.

Of al tanks I dont find rangers as a porblem, they dont have enought cc and cripple brakers and we have “to many”. A constant phantasm and clone preassure with target dropps and spiked bursts make life hard for them. They also disslike confusion far to much.

So far I only give you words, have no guide for pure “how to kill a compitent tank” yet but will try make one. If you after any shatter build tipps thu pls look at my guide. I also try help in any way I can If you so wich and its in my knowledge. And pls dont give up, mesmers have alot of tools, we have in fact not explored em al yet. And alot of fights even vs a good palyer and a hard build (ranger tank as you mention) there is possible to outplay.

Hi mate, just a warning, the admins/moderatorst delete pure qq posts. If you want help for tactics vs thiefs eather use one of the existing Thief vs mesmers threads or make a new one by al means. But if you make a thread make it as a proper " lets discuss tactics for how to beat thiefs …blabla" Put a little more effort into it and try create a platform for discuss tactics etc, mabye help new players.

Atm it feels like you just had a thought and mabye a bit of frustration but this thread dont help anyone exept you who hopefully get some frustration away.

@Westibone, I think that before you go for abuild nomatter what dmg setup you chose you need to plan:

a/what do I want to do with this build

b/if its a dps build why do I chose x kind of dmg over y

c/when kitten hits the fan how do I want to survive

I understand you theorycrafting here as you use a spreadsheet but before you now what you want to do and start test it its still just… theory. Dont missunderstand me, I not criticising your build I just think that you to get optimal ressult need to plan what you want to with the build you setup

Example: A wvwvw build for groupfighting,

Her as I see it its only 2 viable styles(several builds thu), both uses a base dmg and buff source of bounce attacks and a spike of controll/dmg from confusion.

1st is the one I listed in the guide, a shatter spec who work as a confusion bomber, when enemy come you do a fast cloud of confusion that help your team by prevent enemys from attack or use abilitys, you also drop a chaos storm that help the team. If you get caught solo you have good defensive abilitys and can if the enemy deccide to stay kill him as you simply outlast him, if he feel he dont want to fight a condition stealth mesmer he say bye bye and leav you nomatter how many confusion stacks he have applied.

2nd spec is a glamour confusion support build who is invaluable for groupfighting and I aleays want atleast 1 in teamfights on my side. The spec lock a whole enemy zerg from attack without get puniched, it also defend friendly team by feedback and mass blinds. A timewarp give with rune of lyssa al boons to the team and a sigil of spread the boons give whole team a huge buff.

Again, I dont criticise your builds, but theorycrafting is ofc important but there must be a plan and the build is not complett untill tested vs a enemy team or player.

Also al ppl in deso who folowed us on our crazy fight last hours in EB vs a massive number enemy hitting their tail time after time untill we could ninja kill the commander. Beutefull portal usage. Glad we got mendons in the end.

@Op, Personaly I prefere staff, it leav alot more defensive and movment options. You can survive in middle of a big battle without build or spec tankich. Its alot fantastic for solo and smal team roaming.

@Intigo, cheers mate, see you guys vids aswell Impressive stuff and I love your defensive stacking under offensive movment. Like a roman legion advancing under shield roof but in run speed Wery wery impressive and I think you got atleast a few badges with my name on. Next time we meet in field I will try reclaim them.

3 reason I use massinvis. First is idd I need my other utilitys, feedback is a winner in many group fights, especialy when terrain make it tight and give a LOS protection form 1 side, offensive portals is my main role in our roaming, and blink is needed for the portal duity aswell .

Massinvis also hit in 360 degrees, so if we getting chased and we have 1-2 members fail to keep to the group it catches them in the stealth field without the need to run over the veil line. Other is its time is s easier to do direction changes in stealth as it is alittle longer, A weil line you can quite clear say how the ppl passing it will run. Also find it better for ninja resses.

Time warp is used by out support mesmer combined with rune of lyssa and “sigil of give al the boons”. So when we hit we can get time and al boons.

Now I do use veil in my glamour build thu.

This is a vid from when I run support setup with glamour build. Some basic stealth and portal movment aswell, fun times in t2 when al 3 servers where tring to out tactic eachother. T1 is alot of tacktics but many times you feel ppl get lazy and just stack numbers. We keep do our ninja fighting style thu.

Well I cant realy say the Shatter Cat builds not focus on shatter, but the hybrid build uses phantasms as a dmg source aswell and is wery flexible. Th Heavy spec uses a more survival focus and the condition spec offers superb survival and more controll focusing. It uses staff clones for dmg source mainly in many cases.

@Shadowelf, Its a wery strong spec for smal group roaming, 2-3 players. Same gear and slight change to spec make it a zerg killer and we ALWAYS have 1 mesmer in a glamour condition spec simmilar to this but other traits in our raids.

Its alos working well for instacnes as you live for ever and do good boss dmg. In a fast crit dmg group trash die to fast for you to feel usefull thu as your staff clones dissapear al time.

Its the spec I use for support spec normaly when our main support mesmer cant come. My min spec is Hybrid for raiding.

The rabid exotics rings on acutionhouse have other names but rabid stats, rings cost 20~g each so best farmed in fractal, for staff there is only one rabid stat staff, cost ~10g normaly.

@Vinceftw, it was a event when the new island came, gavea trinket who give big stat boost to al stats and nice crit dmg. Cant be obtained now and try find a knight/valk trinket instead with a berzerker jewel in.

Hi, il try add some here aswell, at work so cant type as long post as I would like to but I try add some usefull stuff.

It al come down to how we mesmers work, a ok mesmer will in general try avoid your first burst the cripple and burst, then be low on cd,s. This is the major of shatter mesmers usual setup and best avoided by use a own immunity as soon he cripple you. You problem will come when you run into a more skilled mesmer, he will start use dazes and mobility to hit from weard directions and use Los + terrain as a defense for your mele skills.

To counter this you want to fight mesmers in open terrain where we cant use our incombat mobility and immunes to our advantage, its tricky as most mesmers will move the fight to a place with pillars, hight differences and trees.

I duel alot of bunker 0-10-0-0-30-30 eles just cause I find em the hardest class in game in a 1 vs 1 situation. Fot that setup terrain and cripple spam + daze is central.

Il add 2 vids that show mesmer shatter gameplay, first vid include first staff eles, but after that fight its a d/d ele. Look for the daze then burst setup in that fight. 2 nd vid show later in a longer game vs a d/d and a ranger, here notice how terrain work in mesmers advantage, look how mesmer on purpose move the fight up and down.

@Exavion, Gaia,s link is great. Tbh personaly I use my knight on chest as its biggest stats indd. Pantys are valkyrie atm. Trinket 2 is the event one, its stats are superb. Also I cant stress enought how good this ring is :

Interesting you pick the smal group roaming up, we doing some reorganication of the roles in the guild and last weeks I gone al out on the hybrid spec for group roaming. It offers a supricingly good survival in groups. It also offers better group synnergies than the normal shatter cat.

The on demand burst combined with vuln is a killer when you get hit or try take down d/d eles or other tanks. We also stacking hammer warriors atm so the cance to land a full 4 clone MV on a group is alot bigger.

Also latley we been using 3 mesmers in our 12 man team with mass invis. The effect is fantastic when fighting a bigger force. Constant target dropps and in stealth portaling between positions cause a frustration on a whole new llv in the other team. We fought a 2 times bigger foce yesterday untill they won, after lost 5 players. Next time they saw us they turned and ran

@Chega, y it will take some time thu for ppl feel they “want to roll condition” thu its not alot of options, I accualy went TP and bought the stuff exept karma gear. If you have the economy but not time its betetr go fractals and get that gear 1st.

As you guessed portal is one of the core mecanism mesmers bring to wvwvw. Yes we have a full wagon of good stuff for the raid with ofc, we use 3-4 mesmers on a 12-15 man team, 1/ 5 man setup.

@ Seven, Wery impressive, So glad you do this for the community, your finess and timing is superb and I like that you never panic, you wait out the cd,s of the stealth to close to exact before autoattack and let the clones do their work. I know how hard it it to not hit that low hp player just cause you “might” get him down and by that waste 1-2 sec of stealth. Cheers.

@Confessor, hope this help. Its my keybindings. Im sure they dont fit al bur work for me.

My weaponswap is bound to button left of 1 ( § ), its in good reach for my little finger

My other key binding is:

WASD with A for strafe left D strafe right, I turn with mouse and use left and right mouse button while turning and strafring. This way you can keep hit with sword 2 on enemys why try avoid ( se latest vid 2nd battle when mesmer take 7k hit trying to run behind me, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxafKuAgWww).

V turn camera 180 degrees for time portals and mark frogs,owls and other non 80 npc,s + enemy players to use as “jump platforms” for staff 2 ( see cat leap video for movment info ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=-IqzGCcbHko)

@Froderik, its with traits. Thye hybrid is extrely strong I agree, and its work so well for group play, why I love it. My gear is close to opimal for it now, with food I have almost 100% crit dmg with the hybrid build, 65% ~crit chance with stacks and food. Saw a 9k sword 2 hit today again and iswordsman hit for 6k+ o fully geared players

@Crusader, I think to fully enjoy a 0-20-20-0-30 heavy build you need to play in a smal team, say a thief a ele and a Heavy shatter cat mesmer, scary combo.

@Froderick, The gear changes quite alot as you suspect. The Hybrid spec have lovest, ~1100+ but still survive extremly well, original spec have nowdays around 1200+~toughness. But then they both use the fractal Crit dmg, power and toughness ring, its the best shatter spec optimiced ring in game atm.

Heavy spec land you around 1480-1500 toughtness, its also still use dodges (you have clone on dodge and vigour 100% uptime in battle), sword, Illusionary persona 4 sec immunity and 50% hp reset shatters so its a kitten hard spec to bring down especialy if played in a smal roaming team.

Highest toughness you get by the condition spec thu, in my current condition gear I have around 1800 toughtness and then I have yet gear to get exotic in that spec.

If you play any of this two geared “glascannon” you should play the hybrid, the original is not optimal without usage of knight and valkyre. Il qoute my own guide:

@Ajax the Lesser, Idd. Still I find the force to gain so many benefits for the other abilitys and attacks in the spec. Its survival is after al around avoid take dmg and you can fight for long time with extremly low health (like some of my videos and guides show).

I wery glad for your suggestion thu and I keep it in mind for test in different setups. This trade of ideas is what develop the builds and guides

Let me explain how I chose whats in the guide and not.

Every gear, sigil rune ability etc I use in my guides/builds is there cause they folow the build plan. When I try create a style of play and build I try find synergies. I say, this will be a shatter spec with avoidance focus and punish enemys who attack me. It will use burst dmg but I want it to have sustained preassure one enemys. Also work in group play etc etc.

Then I start set the abilitys together and get sigils, weps runes and utilitys to work together. For example block, it avoid dmg, that folow the acctive defense plan. It also cause a clone who synergis with shatter spec and with utillity mirror immage its a fast way for 3 clone wrack. The 3 clone wrack and block dmg al synergys with sigil of force on the sword I block with. Rune of air also have big chance of proc by the attacker and that dmg also work with force, together you get a huge burst with al your abilitys working together.

I hope I dont sound to theoretical but this is how I deccide what I use and dont. I also tests everything, spend tons of gold on different gear etc for testing. Keep the ideas come. This is more a community guide nowdays than a personal guide. We create it together.

In my oppinion both are viable for wvwvw and depending on playstyle for dungeons. Its just up to your playstyle.

Shatter Cat guide is under construct. So far I sorted the first section and original guide but will now add hybrid spec, Tank S C and a Shatter Cat condition spec. Al of them is in my oppinion after hard testing viable in WvWvW, pve and dungeons, the tank spec is weak thu for Instances in pve.

Staff is a part of al my 4 builds in Shatter cat, the new version of the guide is not fully done yet and under consturction. The spec can be run in:

Original Shatter Cat, Hybrid big dmg spec, Tank Shatter Cat and Condition Shatter Cat

So far I just remade the first of the builds but more get added tomorw. Alot of video guides for new players but also more advance vids for experienced players.

When you say you dont want burst build and use staff I would suggest condition Shatter spec. Its survival is huge, it uses stealth on the side of passive defenses and the dmg immunitys form shatter spec to outlast enemys. Your target dropping combined with staff clones creation will mess with your enemys. Also the cd on staff abilitys is low, alot of chaos armour upptime due to combofields.

First thank you al who help develop this guide. When I stated work on it in 2012 I could never suspect it would grow like it did. I now find it as a place for discuss mesmer shatter builds and find a sulution to problems and nerfs rather tahn qq about them. This is many cause you you ppl who eather folow the guide, send suggestions thru PM,s or play with me ingame.

So to the future. I have alot I would like to work on with the guide, it feel a bit to straitforward and singelminded, I have today 4 different shatter builds I play regulary with both in group and solo/smal team. I would want to reorganice the guide a bit. I also want to make it easier for ppl to chose what spec/build work best for them. So I woll reorganice the guide ALOT the comming week.

Dont panic if you find alot of stuff deleted. Its to make room for new matereal. I will also remake the video section, instead of tubnails I will use links for older movies. This will make it impossible to se vids thru forum, to leav this option open I will leav the newest 2 vids as tubnails.

Incomming uppdates.

So now you know whats incomming. It will not be done over a night but step by step. I keep you informed. Hopfully by add more options to playstyle and shape the guide up we can get this added as sticky aswell.

I can only talk for wvwvw as its my area, I run a mesmer wvwvw guide and regulary play in a mid sice team roaming. Also play alot solo and dual team with meser and completly love it.

@all, big day, new vid up and breached 400 video subscribers and 50 k guide wievs on same day Ty al for support and help develop new styles for mesmers to play. Got alot side projects I work with atm, plus we reorganicing our guild to a more effective killing team. Still the mesmer experements is ongoing, got two working condi builds I test in large scale fighting aswell but for now I mostly run hybrid in guild raids.

@Kinetic, I run both tbh, I do favour hybrid spec for group fights thu as it have superb group synergies, I sometime change phant dmg for vuln stack in big fights as it help group more.

For solo runs its a bit easier to run normal shatter cat as you mobility and controll is abit better. The hybrid is stronger in dmg and less gear depending for defense.

You might notice my hp gone down a bit in latest vids. this as I use the fractal toughtness, crit dmg and power ring. Its superb.

@Trickstick, yes just that to get arcane you need to drop for Shatter cat hybrid eather blink, decoy or mirror. Al have a wery central role, mobility, survival and burst. For normal shatter cat you need to drop mirror, blink or portal, again extremly important.

What is traded out for sigil of generosity is fire aoe sigil. So the tradeof is alot cheaper.

I do agree thu that Arcane thevery is good, just that I find the other utilitys so central for the gamestyle that I have hard to recomend to trade em out for a situational utility you feel you missing a few times / gaming session.

In sPvP thu I understand situation is different.

@Doz, overall we shatter mesmer have wery few weaknesses. Direct dmg we can dodge, avoid, stealth and directly immune. The spec running more dmg and leav even more of its survival to stealth and acctive dmg avoidance.

In one area we have a weakness thu. Condition, if they are cc based or dmg dealing al give us headace.

With the phantasm hybrid spec your burst is among the highest in game, unless enemy run a pure tank spec you will destroy the enemy extremly fast. Your burst tbh is even so high you better of burst alot of classes than try to stomp them.

The sigil of generosity work in the penalticing way I want the spec to run. Most abilitys have 2 effects. They deal dmg and immune (sword 2), they cc and cause vulebility (daze shatter), block a attack, and deal dmg block. You se where im heading, sigil of generosity not only dispell a dangerous condition, they transfere it to enemy. It hurt to hit a mesmer.

Have some vids dealing with thiefs, hope they help, most often dont have big problem with thiefs unless super stealthy bleed stackers. Those need some hard work.

First fight show how most encounters vs glascannon thiefs end. They just not build to take dmg.

Rune of air is your best friend vs thiefs, and stealths ofc. Also sword of make life easier.

@Lyca, Hi, how werad I feel find myself in the guardian forums this morning. I usualy spend some time every morning write in the memsmer forums but feel this thread was worth some attention.

I feel guardians to be a interesting matchup in pvp, I run 99% of my pvp in wvwvw eather smal group or solo/dual roaming. One thing with you guys is how big difference you make on the battlefield. A groupfight or a 1 vs 2/x as mesmer i feel guardians on enemy side cause enourmous problems. This as you have the advantage of big fast ressing and substained healing/dmg. I cause of this include alot of fights vs guardians on my forum guide for mesmers and videos.

1 vs 1 is another history, here mesmers who play shatter build have a big advantage, yes the burst we do is good but I feel our ability to longtime immune enemy effects is our best weapon.

Some specific tipps for you vs shatter mesmers.

1 know your enemy, test play vs one many times, see videos of mesmer fight guardians and analyce what we do.

2 Daze, a new mesmer will just cripple you land a sword and hit big burst, this is easy avoided by hit defenses as soon cripple land. When you thu face a more experienced mesmer you first be dazed, this prevent some of your defenses and in some build stack vulnebility. This is where you need to watch out.

3 Dots, burning is agood tip, most mesmers run without condition removal, so stacking conditions can in smae cases help, nowdays thu alot of mesmers run with sigil of generosity who give conditions back.

I include 2 vids. One is with some 1 vs 1 where I fight some guardians and other classes. The first fight is guardian and its a simmilar later on. Can scroll thru most as its other classes between.

@Mogster, Persoanly I beleve that with our high Crit dmg, and crit multiplier (im @ 107% crit dmg now in normal shatter cat, 97% crit dmg in hyrid) more crit chance give more dmg than more dmg.

With fully stacked my crit is ~65% now in hybrid spec. With fury up its 85%, this give a extremly high burst as so many of the MV and phantasm hits crit.
