New example: Mr Mage likes to use a staff. He’s level 80, and he has a good staff, but he’d like a better one. Now, he knows that if he tosses 4 rare staves into the Mystic Forge, he’ll get a different magic staff out. So, that’s what he does. Every time he gets a magic staff, he compares it to his current one. He equips the best, and holds on to the other until he has 4 spares, then tosses them into the forge for a “reroll” in the hopes of getting just the stats he wants.

One day, it doesn’t spit out a rare staff. It spits out an exotic staff. Needless to say, this doesn’t seem right at all. Hoping to not get banned, he destroys the staff, and reports the bug. That’s the right thing to do, right?

Fused Weapons

Hey all! Do you know what a “Skinner Box” is? If not, watch this (or at least the first half of it).

Now, take a look at the Black Lion Chests. Yep, that’s a Skinner Box. And while I hate to admit it, they’re effective. They’re more than likely going to get more money this way than if they simply offered the tickets for direct purchase, even at a higher price.

The problem is, there’s a threshold where you decide the button/action isn’t working. That it’s never going to pay out. At that point, the engagement turns into embitterment, and they walk away, sometimes to never return. They feel cheated, robbed of time and money. And perhaps for good reason, too.

They say it’s a fine line between love and hate. Well, in this case, that’s true. And RNG stuff like this can push people over that line, from loving the game to hating it. So the next time they put something like this into the game, realize what might happen if you chase after it. Decide if it’s really worth it, of if you’d be better off just ignoring it.

Personally? I love the look of many of those weapons, but I don’t want to burn out on the game due to bad luck. So, I’m going to just ignore them and keep right on playing.

Is Guild Wars 2 Doing Well?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Palador.2170

Palador.2170

I’m going to pass on reading the entire thread, and simply give you my answer as I see it.

Is GW2 doing well? No.

Both GW2 and Arena Net are very successful at the moment. However, that’s not the same as doing WELL. ANet is stuck with NCSoft, well known for killing games. GW2 has a list of problems that are not being correctly addressed, for whatever reason. Both GW2 and ANet as a whole are pushing forward, using momentum to keep things going and growing.

This is like a person using caffeine and energy drinks to keep themselves going. It works, and it can work pretty darned well. However, what you’re avoiding keeps building up, and eventually you can’t keep going anymore and you crash. I don’t think it’ll happen this year, but sometime in the next 2 or so, the GW2 team will take a look at the game and say something along the lines of “My god, how did it get like this?” When that day comes, it won’t be pretty.

Palador.2170

Let me just say, it pays to pay attention to gw2lfg posts, and I can’t be anymore clear.
We ( my guild ) posted on lfg, that those who join WILL be kicked AT THE END of the instance.

Upon arriving inside, we asked if they read the lfg post. They said “yes” it was a guardian and thief.

NEAR THE END, they were kicked, and they kept whispering us why they were kicked out.

Note the bolded parts. Kicked at the end? That’s fine. Boss and rewards come before the end.

Near the end, before the boss and rewards? That’s different. Very, very different. It’s the difference between getting your paycheck when they’re done filling it out, and getting it when they’re NEARLY done filling it out, say while it’s still unsigned/unauthorized.

And no this isn’t trolling, the entire point of this “experiment” was to test whether not people actually read or not.

I’m sorry, but the only thing you’ve proved is that you need to improve your communication skills. If you want to try this again, spell out that you will kick them BEFORE the end.

(That having been said, I really hope you don’t do this again. Experiment or not, warned or not, it’s still a bad thing to do to people.)

Palador.2170

There does NOT need to be a “fair” way to get them. No, instead there’s work, effort, and play. Sure, it’s a bit random, but the more jumping puzzles you do the better odds you have. This is the same for Precursors, boss loot, player drops, and so on. Even the Ascended crafting pieces for the back piece that drop in Fractals is random.

There is a difference here, though.

In your other examples, the quest for the items IS the content. With the continue coins, the item in question isn’t the real content, it’s the key to the content. (Admittedly, that’s what’s assumed right now. That could be wrong.) For the RNG to be able to lock people out of content is to risk the content being underused and/or ignored no matter how good it may be.

I’m not saying there needs to be a fair AND easy way to get the coins. Finding the coins at random is our easy way. There just needs to be a dependable, predictable way to get them as well. Slow, perhaps, but “fair”. Put in the effort, and you’ll get the key to the content. Depending on HOW the coins are used, this may become a bigger or smaller issue.

I’m not going to worry about it too much until I know more.

But, if it’s not and it is actual keys…how hard is it really to get? There’s 3 jumping puzzles in Lion’s Arch, and all 3 have a chance to get a coin and are easy to accomplish. I’ve done all 3 every day for the past 3 days and have gotten 4 coins from it. Plus 2 rares, and a few trash greens.

I’ve done nearly as many JPs lately, and gotten only one coin. That’s the problem with leaving it up to the random number generator to decide who gets coins and who doesn’t. It’s random, not fair. There needs to be a fair way to get them, as well.

The first three can come from your class, and the last two from your race. Then you could have Mesmers walking around with copies of themselves or creating swarms of butterflies. Option: Replace Dodging with Blocking

There are several weapon sets that have a “block” or “block and counter” ability. All of these would have to be changed or replaced with something just as powerful. This change would also have to keep the weapons feeling different than their non-blocking counterparts for each class.

I’m not saying it couldn’t be done, just that there’s more to it than the one change you want. It would require a lot of work, and possibly a rebalancing of the entire combat system.

I’m not saying that playing on a team is bad. I’m just saying it’s not something I usually enjoy, just as some people don’t enjoy chocolate cake or classical music. I could try to explain it, but in the end it comes down to “I don’t like it.”

I know I’m not the only one that feels this way, and I’m sure there’s a few out there that may like to team, but want to avoid certain dungeons due to personal dislike.

Why no dungeon tokens for laurels?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Palador.2170

Palador.2170

I think it’s a pretty straight forward question: Why can’t we use laurels to get dungeon tokens? It would allow solo players to get the dungeon gear, but the conversion rate could easily be set so that it’s a bit faster and easier to get them by actually running the dungeons.

I’m sure there’s a reason why they didn’t do this, but I’m not seeing it. Can anyone point it out to me?

(Note: I play 99% solo, so I don’t really know how fast and easy the tokens come during a dungeon run. Given the prices and what I’ve heard, though, I can assume it’s a lot faster than we get laurels.)

That don’t even make sense. People can swap now because there’s no gear inspection. If there is gear inspection you know who is swapping since you can check them mid dungeon.

Which is around when you can start to figure out who’s lied about their gear right now, without inspect. Right?

If you plan to spend all your time checking gear to make sure nobody’s switching on you, then odds are good you’ll be the one dragging the party down because you’re so distracted. People WILL do this, sane or not. If most people do a check 5 minutes in, then they’ll learn to wait a bit longer before switching gear to still get what they can out of it.

I played EQ1, and that is NOT a game you want to copy. We can, however, learn from it.

I remember the camps for those things back in the day, calling them frustrating is a massive understatement. We do NOT need “NMs” that are a low chance to spawn, or spawn only every few days.

However… Say they set out a small series of things you can do. None of them unusually hard, but they take a bit of time and travel. Each item gives you something. Turn these items in (may require combining them into one item in the Mystic Forge, first), and the NM will appear. Suddenly, there’s no camping, no frustration that the NM keeps appearing while you’re at work. It’s the players that trigger it, not luck. The subquests to make this happen are what slow down how often it’s spawned, and can be set to make the process as rare or common as the Devs want it to be.

I think a player activated spawn would be much more player friendly. However, in either version, I wouldn’t hold my breath for excessively better loot. It would be bad for the game for any NM to become “the best path” to a special end.

This is for the more casual players that may not care about BiS gear. They may not want to run fractals and dungeons, but doing dailies is something they enjoy. When the time comes, they’ll look and see that they can get a good piece of equipment for a set cost in laurels. If it’s worth it or not will be up to them to decide.
