I +1 this thread every time I look at it. The button is never gray when I come back to the thread (when it’s there).

Edit – and naturally as soon as I pick one out in particular to report, it starts working. I’ll check it tomorrow. I log in from three different devices – my desktop, my phone, and my nook, so it’s possible that my browsing the forums at work is causing some issues.

My gut feeling with the issues I’ve been seeing, is that on some pages the forums forget who I am. I had one post that I edited in this forum that said a moderator edited it. I allow all cookies for the forums, but I have the Google opt-out plug-in installed, and I may have restricted some things flash and javascript are allowed to do.

Allowing folks to vendor through Black Lion

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Pandemoniac.4739

Pandemoniac.4739

I’ve been enjoying a couple of the longer threads in this forum, and they’ve started to branch off into several interesting tangents. There was a suggestion in the “Economy is borked” thread that I thought got overlooked. Maybe it was discussed in another thread and I missed it.

Try this on for size.

If the lowest sale price is vendor price +1… have the TP auctioneer enable an option to just vendor it on the spot for vendor price. This will enable oversupply glut to get eaten, prevent newbies from getting taken advantage of, stop the complaints of the folks who are upset of all the vendor +1 listing etc. etc. Just have the Trade Post also “actually” buy stuff at vendor price. Makes everything streamlined and easy.

Basically there would always be an open bid for stuff at vendor price (or rather 1C over), so if there wasn’t a vendor convenient, you could pay a 15% tax to sell your junk at vendor price + 1C. I’m guessing there might still be supply at vendor +2C, but I don’t think worthless junk on the TP will completely go away unless there is a limit on the number of active auctions an account can have (but not too restrictive please!) or a similar restriction.

I think it’s an elegant way of cleaning up the glut of worthless items on the AH (i.e. items with no demand) and maybe Anet could clean up the impossibly low bids while they have the hood open.

The down side the first springs to mind is the advantage to the botters. Right now they could stuff items on the TP and they don’t necessarily sell. If they could get an instant sale it would certainly make things easier on them :/ I’m not sure if they are actually doing that much listing or not though. I suspect they are because of the white items I’ve seen on the TP that anyone who’s ever looked on the TP knows will never sell. Maybe some folks are using the TP as extra storage, but for an axe that salvages into materials that are cheaper to buy outright? I don’t know.

You can tell the difference between a bot and a real player with an auto-attack retaliation because real players stop firing when there are no more targets.

You have to be careful though because there are players that will purposely drag mobs to you. I was roaming around getting map completion done in one of the lower tiers and got a phone call – I was still at my screen, just otherwise occupied, and watched a couple of players running around trying to drop aggro on me so they could harvest some nodes while I fought the beasties (they didn’t have a lot of luck with that tactic – I generally keep my pet on passive because I’m a control freak).

Usually sitting someplace where you have to jump over/up a gap or bit of terrain with a bit of distance between you and any event area works fine. I’ve gotten pretty good at finding parking spots – it’s easier with a ranger because I just look for some place to hop up that my pet doesn’t follow me, then I stow my pet.

Our guild chipped in to buy the book for our designated commander, and as we are a rather large guild, it made sense. We didn’t require a donation though.

Also, there are folks out there who have more money to spend on games that you might suspect, and can afford to buy gold through BLT. I certainly hope they aren’t supporting the gold farmers but I suppose that’s a possibility too.

Kitten, I thought I was the only one with a raven called Quoth. Except at least one other person used it in GW1 as well.

My raven is named “Nevermore”. My owl is named Hootie because I’ve never been able to get this homage to a Strigid Screech Owl out of my head.

I got a kick out of a Norn name my husband came up with for me – Nancy Brew. She’s teamed up with his Frank Zappya. Two guesses as to his profession.

Low level ingredients can appear in high level recipes – take salt and pepper for example – it’s an ingredient in recipes from 0 to 400. If you add it to a recipe and the rating level is too high for you to make even though it wasn’t red in your discover tab, it just means you haven’t combined it with the correct ingredients to find the lower level recipe.

Player Happiness Investigation: The Results

Pandemoniac.4739

Very interesting read – thanks for taking the time.

I’m not sure why so many rangers are unhappy. It’s possible that it’s an expectation problem – as a ranged profession with a pet, maybe some folks expected that they would be more insulated from the action parts of the combat.

I love my ranger, but I have to be on my toes in hard fights managing my pet, maneuvering, trying to get facing the right way after evading, remembering not to use my “jump back” skill when I’m on the edge of a cliff… sigh. I think the expectation problems are illustrated by folks thinking that the bear is the only worthwhile pet (they can soak up a lot of damage, so you don’t have to be as careful with them).

Folks that choose a thief pretty much have their expectations met – some stealth, big burst damage, little bit squishy. Warriors also meet expectations – heavy armor, melee monsters. Elementalists – I think that folks expected a nuker in exchange for being squishy, but you really have to understand your class to get the damage output. I found that if I don’t switch my attunements to take advantage of synergies, I don’t really feel all that powerful. So folks trying to play as a traditional mage might be disappointed.

I guess my definition of happiness in terms of games is getting close to what you expected.

I salvage everything I find now to try and get crafting materials but I guess I am either extremely unlucky or X% to get rarer materials doesn’t mean you can get fine crafting materials from salvaging them.

I don’t think you can get fine materials from salvaging – I just completed my monthly achievements, and haven’t seen one. I think you can get a higher tier of raw material, say coarse leather instead of thin, and you can recover upgrades. If there is a chance, it’s very very slim and I’ve been shooting myself in the foot using only basic kits unless I want to recover a rune.

Puzzle Griefing in WvWvW ruins the Game experience.

Pandemoniac.4739

i agree 100% – i dont like to pvp so if i go to wvwvw its ONLY to get my 100% world completion, not to pvp

I think that’s exactly what ANet intended. At least you went into the zone and had some experience of the WvW zone instead of completely ignoring it. I think as far as realm versus realm PvP goes in an MMO, GW2 is the most accessible to all skill and interest levels that I’ve seen.

There are really nice PvE bonuses for your side being ahead of the others, and there are things you can do to help the war effort that don’t require running with the zerg. Run supply from the supply camps to repair tower gates and such. There’s good harvesting in those areas too.

It’s not for everyone, but I think that there are some folks who “hate PvP” that would find it a fun change of pace from PvE once in a while if they gave it a chance. Some days I feel like crafting, some days I feel like a dungeon run, some days I feel like harvesting, and some days I want to conquer some territory in WvW (I haven’t had the urge to do any sPvP yet).

It’s nice to be able to switch things up, and you can come and go as you please with no commitment to spending a certain amount of time. Folks can’t camp your corpse, because you can always port back to a safe waypoint and leave the area. The area is large enough that you can avoid roving zergs if you keep an eye on the map. There are lots of things to do besides getting picked off by campers at the jumping puzzles.

It’s basically like PvE, except the mobs can be a lot smarter and tougher, their aggro radius is really big, and they really want you dead whether you’re bothering them or not

Difference between Copper, Iron and Steel Gathering Tools?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Pandemoniac.4739

Pandemoniac.4739

I haven’t put any magic find on my gear – we probably did have a bonus from WvW though. So I did a fairly thorough run with copper tools in the Asura starting lands earlier. I’ll do a run through with orichalium tools next and try to get the same amount of samples in the same area. I don’t think we had a bonus from WvW, but I didn’t check (grumble), and I’ve gained a level in the meantime. If the results aren’t dramatically different, I say we chalk it up to wishful thinking on my part.

Here’s a quick summary

20 copper mines (1 rich, so let’s say 24 harvests) – 6 gems
20 trees – 30 cinnamon (between 3-5 per harvest). I got a fourth log 3 times
19 crops – 1 dye, 1 vanilla harvest of 5, 1 thyme – the rest normal 1s and 2s blueberries, carrots, onions, mushrooms, and garlic.

After running a bit with the higher level tools, I’m fairly certain what I was seeing was the gathering bonus from WvW and not a difference in tools. Buy the cheapest tools for the tier you’re in.

Personally, I think they should just start world servers at different times during the year, and that world runs regardless if anyone shows up or not. (snip)I would log in every day to make sure I helped and didn’t miss awesome stuff, and I would create a name for myself.

I wouldn’t play that type of game. I have a more than full time job with enough stress. I wouldn’t want that kind of pressure put on my play time. It’s annoying enough to have to wait in a queue when I want to get into WvW – I’m not going to wait in a queue for my game to start, and then feel pressured to spend all of my free time in the game so I can miss as little content as possible.

It would really stink to have a work obligation at the same time the server decides to launch a major offensive and never have the opportunity to experience it that content.

One thing I would look at is your mobility skills – I always liked lightning+dagger. “Stand still” is rarely the right answer in GW2. I have survived getting too many mobs dropped on me multiple times simply by constantly moving. It was touch and go and I had to rally sometimes, but it was doable.

You can make melee mobs miss you by moving out of their range or getting behind them. I mapped “about face” to my keyboard so that I can instantly switch directions and run back through a mob. The goal is to minimize getting hit while your skills are recharging and try to get the mob’s health down enough that it is easy to rally if you’re downed.

While the ANet folks are working on the disappearing quote/edit buttons, here is how I work around the problem.

  1. Click on the permanent link for the post you want to quote, for example
    https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/forum/Some-threads-have-no-edit-quote-report-options/first#post128498
  2. Edit the URL in your browser to remove first#post and append /quote :
    https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/forum/Some-threads-have-no-edit-quote-report-options/128498/quote
  3. Hit enter to go the that URL

If that doesn’t work (it usually does for me) you can copy and paste what you want to quote and use BBCode:
{quote=128498;PosterName}pasted text{/quote}
Replace the braces with brackets – we can disable textile, but not BBCode it seems.

What causes you to feel like you’ve had fun?

I’m willing to go out on a line and say that it’s root is that you feel valuable in a way you can’t/don’t in real life. Yes, it’s a stretch. But give it about 10 minutes of real contemplation then get back to me.

What makes something fun? That’s a really complicated question.

For me, it’s primarily puzzle solving and fresh information. I’m a collector, except I collect information – not just facts, but stories, imagery, whatever. I’m not picky. That’s why I love GW2 – I have fun exploring. I also have fun getting deep into the guts of the game mechanics and taking something everyone says is kitten and figuring out how to make it viable. I’m even getting a kick out of watching the virtual market in GW2 play out and I’m waiting to see what happens when more of the population moves up into higher levels. The pursuit of knowledge – that’s what makes my endorphins fire.

I have never been the player that tops the DPS meter. I won’t be the the person in my guild that has the commander book. I won’t be the first person to hit the level cap in any game, or the first person to craft a legendary, or whatever. I don’t need that to enjoy myself. Maybe it’s because I’m really good at what I do for a living that I don’t need someone to recognize my greatness in a game. I know I’m great – if y’all can’t see it, that’s your problem

So, back to my original point. You really should get in the habit of expressing your ideas as coming from yourself – it empowers you. I don’t know how to explain this in text without sounding like a jerk – I’m not trying to tear you down, I’m trying to give you some feedback that might be helpful. Using “we” to express your opinion when no-one is standing behind you nodding makes you look weak. You don’t need a bunch of imaginary friends that agree with you to persuade folks you have a good idea. Frankly, whenever someone pulls out the imaginary friends, it’s less persuasive to me.

If there are really a lot of people that agree with you, and you say “I believe this to be true”, they will show up and say “me too!”. If no-one shows up and says me too! that doesn’t mean you’re wrong, it just means that there are a bunch of folks that you need to enlighten

Pan – not that I’ve noticed. Obviously, you can’t get drops out of higher level nodes with lower level tools, because you just get “Ruined”! But I have harvested lower level nodes with higher level tools, and I can’t say that I’ve noticed any better drops resulting.

I decided to head back to the Asura starting area with my mithril tools on and do an unscientific test. I’m getting two gems out of most copper nodes which I’ve never seen with copper tools. I think the quality of the tool does impact what you get out of the node. Either that or it’s based on your level (I’m 70). Maybe I’ll buy some copper tools and do a proper test.

Do you expect something new tomorrow?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Pandemoniac.4739

The same people who hated Star Wars after 2 weeks, then hated GW2 after 2 weeks will also play for 200 hours, finish up the new content in 1 to 2 weeks and hate MoP.

Yes, that ^^^^

My husband and I buy a LOT of games. It’s our hobby. There have been a few stinkers we didn’t get our money’s worth out of, but even SWTOR was cheaper entertainment in terms of dollars per hour than going out to the clubs or seeing a movie. I think the underlying problem here is that folks that will drop $60 at a pub for an evening of fun complain that a $60 game has stopped entertaining them after playing for 150+ hours.

MMOs in general are set up to have a bunch of unhappy customers simply because they have expectations that can not be met. Some folks enjoy games that have a clearly defined ultimate goal and have the most fun getting to that ultimate goal faster than other people. That’s fine – the problem comes in when people expect the same game to be entertaining forever when they’re playing to get as fast as possible to some goal. MMOs can’t add new meaningful goals for those players faster than they can achieve them.

My play style is different. I’m more interested in exploring the world and playing a character in it. I have enough goal achieving stress at work, I want to escape it. GW2 is perfect for me in that respect and I get really cranky when folks demand that the game mechanics be changed to be more like the other stuff out out the market. This is the only game I have that completely caters to my style of play. The folks that are asking for a complete change in game mechanics have lots of other options and I wish they would go take advantage of them.

If the folks that like this sort of game are really such a minority, then it will go the same way as SWG. I’m still hoping we’re a big enough niche to make a reasonable profit from.

If the lowest sale price is vendor price +1… have the TP auctioneer enable an option to just vendor it on the spot for vendor price.

I think that’s a really interesting idea. You take the folks that are just selling junk to clear out their inventory when there’s no convenient vendor out of the market. I’m assuming you would keep the TP 15% cut as a convenience tax? I wonder how many would still just list it at the lowest rate they saw it on the market and we’d end up with a glut at 2c over vendor.

Interesting, though either your scale is pretty lenient or GW2’s forums are overwhelmingly positive compared to other MMOs (just looking at it and giving it an eye test, GW2’s forum seems as negative as any other).

Actually I disagree. I think the forums are actually more positive than other forums I’ve participated in for games with similarly sized player bases. Of course Diablo 3 has tainted my perception of “negative” forever, but in general I think that there is a higher proportion of threads with fairly calm discussion in them (even if it’s not complimentary to the game itself) than raging hateful threads that I see other places.

Of course that is probably more due to the crack team of commando moderators we have around here than anything else

Karina’s results pretty much matched my perception, although I did find the negativity in the ranger forum surprising. However, there is a fairly vocal group that want to play rangers without pets though, so maybe I shouldn’t be too surprised.

Linsey, I think the butter and chocolate drops have gotten pretty close to reasonable. I’m one of the oddballs that liked the change to migrate some cooking items off of the karma vendors. I think butter/chocolate was a better alternative than flour/sugar and I understand why y’all erred on the side of too much. I’m not going to go into a lot of detail as to why I liked the change because I don’t want to have to defend my eccentricities, but rest assured that there is at least one player who’s not cranky about it.

So, what to do about the little misstep with the drop rates though? Here’s one way to get rid of a lot of butter and here’s how the Bellagio in Las Vegas took care of 2100 pounds of chocolate.

I went and changed my password just to be double extra sure it wasn’t on the list of ones being tried by the scammers (I’m old and pedantic and refuse to call them hackers). One type of double authentication that I hadn’t seen before was the number pad in Hellgate Global where the numbers appeared in random order on the buttons. You had a 4 digit code to type in, but because the numbers were never in the same location it was tough to snag with a keylogger.

I don’t know how effective it was, but it certainly was much simpler than hooking up a token authenticator. I don’t mind those either though, I buy the devices for any game I play that offers them. I much prefer them over a mobile or desktop app.

Hey John, could we get a reprise of your analysis of the economy during the beta?

I really enjoyed the analysis you presented on the economy during the beta (yes, I’m a data junkie). I know y’all are probably pretty busy with some of the issues that have sprung up, but I would love to see what the wealth distribution and such look like now that the population has increased.

Do you have plans to do another state of the virtual economy once things have settled out?

Yeah, the subscribe thing doesn’t seem to be working at all, but the RSS feeds do. I have to copy the link and manually add it to my reader, but that’s the best solution I’ve found so far.

I think it’s related to the quote/report options not showing up in some threads. I read the forums on my Nook sometimes without logging in, and I’ve noticed one post that I didn’t see from someone I ignored when I was logged in on my desktop. In threads where the quote icon doesn’t show up, I see posts from folks I’ve ignored.

Yeah the respawn rate did seem a bit excessive, but so did the number of teleporting nimwits I saw in the area. I wonder if their exploit is having an impact on the game code.

I grabbed the skill point during the event when there were lots of folks around (and netted a bunch of crafting materials and a couple of rares). The other centaur camps weren’t nearly as bad, although I did get trampled by a huge group that spawned for a different event when I was trying to get to a POI (didn’t die even though, I have given some though in my build to getting out of untenable situations).

Both the rendering of the water (among other rendering) and the seamless implementation of water combat where non-fish can actually chase you out of the water onto land makes for a very believable environment!

I agree – I love how smooth the transition is between land and water. I think it was brilliant to have a mode where you swim on the surface to address the camera issues that plague other games with swimming.

I’ve found some underwater areas even more stunning than some of the land areas. When I need to de-stress, I grab my pet shark and we go take a swim around lion’s arch.

Well I’ll be sure to post every day then… I can take the time to report 2-3 spams when I log in. Actually though I think I get the spam after I talk in map chat or do crafting in LA.

I spent a couple days out in the wilderness getting map completion in Harathi (and some cherries/almonds in bulk), and was spam free. I head back into LA to discover some recipes with the stuff I gathered, and had a couple spam mails waiting for me the next time I logged in.

As for myself, there’s a lotof things that I love about this game, but I think the one thing I find most fun.. is the lack of ‘invisible walls’. I often find myself climbing onto ANYTHING that I can. Finding hidden ways up the sideof a mountain, or exploring Divinity’s Reach via rooftop travel. (I’ve died a lot trying that!)

Me too! I was exploring a promising looking bit of architecture, slipped, and ended up as a rather messy stain in Mystic Plaza in Lion’s arch. Folks were happy to help me up, but asked me how I managed to die crafting

My favorite moment was finding a hidden jumping puzzle in Lion’s Arch just because I was curious about where a light was coming from in the back of a cave. That’s the first time I’ve found a “secret” in a game where I didn’t just look it up.

I love summoning my little sous chef and the grease fire ability on the frying pan toy that came with my chef’s outfit. I want more toys!

I’m having a blast with the cooking recipe discoveries. My husband does all the cooking IRL, and somehow I always find myself gravitating to cooking in video games. The GW2 system blows away what I thought were good systems in EQ II and Fallen Earth in terms of fun. The recipe discoveries are like little puzzles.

Can ALL ingredients please go to the collection tab?

And I see no reason why they can’t make a slot appear for something once you have discovered it.

I assure you it’s more difficult than you believe it to be. If your bank is full of cooking ingredients, you’re keeping too much stuff. I’m down to half of a bank tab and I’m an avid cook. I really need to get off my butt and find some dill and rosemary though, I have a feeling half of my remaining discoveries involve those two.

It would be nice to have more organization in the bank though, similar to the crafted bags that automatically collect trophies or crafting materials.

While destroying food is sad I think being able to sell it to a vendor would really generate too much cash. I’d rather see some random mystic forge recipes. On my leather worker I’ll toss my 4 discovered pairs of gloves in there and mash them into something different. The only recipes I know of for food are the super expensive trays/bowls ones.

Actually thinking about this a bit more – we should be able to put in a snack, meal, dessert and a bottle of Zommoros’ favorite wine and get some sort of reward. It’s got to be better than a constant diet of gear and mystic coins

Craftable Runes of Divinity?

in Crafting

Posted by: Pandemoniac.4739

I think the transmutation stones are a perfect solution for people that want the runes for their character’s gear. I get to choose the look that I want, keep the rune, and upgrade the stats.

Can you transmute the rune from a Karma bought item onto a regular item of the same type and be able to salvage it?

Agree with Tallenn, I hate constantly hearing the greets (A) for other players. There needs to be a way to only hear them when I greet a character and not when other people do.

Yes I think the greets on the vendors could be muted without losing too much ambiance. Also, someone get that poor woman in Hoelbrak some help. Or an audience. Maybe she’d stop saying the same thing over and over if someone was listening to her.

Hey Everyone! Please Fail Grenth Priest event...

in Dynamic Events

Failing an event shouldn’t be more interesting than succeeding at it. I appreciate the thought that went into failing having consequences, but standing around letting the bad guys win is not fun and neither is getting harassed by a bunch of other players because you interfered with them playing the way they want to play.

In my opinion, there should never be an incentive to fail. You shouldn’t get to do more events or fight more epic enemies when you fail than when you succeed. Balancing event success and failure is tough from a story perspective sometimes, but the game should come before the story.

On the other hand, I would like to see all of the ways the story could play out so I’m a bit torn. It’s a bit like trying to read a choose your own adventure story with a theater full of people participating. I don’t know that there’s a perfect answer.

Can ALL ingredients please go to the collection tab?

in Crafting

Pandemoniac.4739

Not all ingredients belong in the collectible tab – it seems like it’s only pretty much stuff that can be used by more than one craft. I’d hate to see some of the discovered items for cooking in my collectible tab, and I don’t think it’s really feasible to have them as blank boxes that fill in. There are sooo many things to discover, and I hope once things settle out, we’ll see some new discoverable things added. It would get very unwieldy very quickly.

I have bought a tab for my cooking ingredients. I keep it manageable by only keeping the stuff that shows up in my discovery tab. If I discover something and say, garlic bread disappears from my discovery tab, I use up all of it that I have left so I don’t have it clogging up my bank.

It was a little easier to do when you had to put stuff in your inventory to get it to show up in the discovery tab, but I’m not complaining. Discoveries are so much easier now that I don’t have to swap ingredients for my harvesting tools, HOM porter, salvage kits, et. al.

The problem would be solved for me if I could have a hotkey to toggle muting the game voices. I’d love to keep the music on, but I’d rather have a mute everything hotkey than none at all.

I really like walking past folks and catching bits of conversation, so I’m a bit nervous about the repeat rate changing. I might miss something! I am after all an initiate in the order of … well you know. Don’t cramp my intel gathering
