You’ll probably have to wait for NCsoft’s next quarterly report for real data. GW2 was lanched shortly after the third quarter report. I don’t have the link right now… just head to the investor section of NCSoft’s site. Every publically traded company is required to make that info available.

The only reliable way I’ve found to get them back is to force reloading of the page (Shift+refresh in Chrome) until I see them. I usually takes multiple refreshes.

There is some interaction with replying to a thread, but I don’t know exactly how. Sometimes adding a reply causes them to disappear for me. Maybe I’ll disabling my browser’s cache and see if that helps.

Remove the Leveling Scale from Guild Wars 2

Pandemoniac.4739

WoW might have a smart respawn system, which it does. but it doesn’t have downscaling obviously.
So I don’t really see the relevance here, aside the ‘high level farmed my mobs’ bit.

Yeah the respawn adjustment only solves part of the problem – higher level characters preventing lower level characters from being able to progress. It doesn’t solve the problem of higher level characters wanting to play with lower level characters, or wanting to experience the lower level content at an appropriate challenge level.

Also it really stinks with the higher level player is done farming the mobs, but the mobs are still respawning quickly and your poor undergeared character is far behind enemy lines…

Having played in other MMOs, nothing used to bother me more than needing X number of something (we’ll say Warthogs) and when I headed out to get them, some high level idiot came through with an AoE spell that killed them all instantly because he needed to grind for something, leaving me to wait for the respawns.

I feel that same way – I left Rift because of the high level players clearing low level rifts. There’s also the flip side – I was tooling around Metrica with my level 75 and I could help the lower level players at events without killing stuff so fast they couldn’t get enough damage in to get a drop and participation credit.

Apathetic and unfriendly players on Cursed Shore

If you find folks universally unfriendly maybe it’s time to look for a new server. I would check out the guild subforum, hook up with some folks that have similar play goals to yours, and transfer to their server.

I will sometimes walk past dead players, especially if they’re close to a waypoint, because if they’re AFK, rezzing them is just upping their repair bills. If I was right there and someone asked, I stop and help. I’m sure I may have missed some requests because I was in reading guild chat or sorting my inventory as I was moving. I’m not always looking at my chat window.

Level Scaling is not for "rewards"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Pandemoniac.4739

As for traveling costs: maybe they’re just too high for everybody, everywhere…

Other folks have suggested that travel to the main cities be free. I think that would cut down significantly on the travel costs without making it too attractive to just way point around instead of walk.

As for repair costs I think I figured out why I’m not seeing a problem (other than I don’t die a lot) – I’m not in exotic armor. I’m kind of embarrassed to admit it, but I’ve been ignoring my gear so completely that half my armor is just fine quality. Only my weapons are exotics. So maybe the step up in cost for repairing exotic armor is a bit too steep.

Reading over the forums I see some folks complaining how easy it is when they’re down scaled, and some folks complaining that they’re having problems. That makes me like the idea of letting folks tweak their difficulty setting individually even more. In CoH you had to talk to a reputation NPC and pay a small fee to change your difficulty setting around, so you couldn’t do it on the fly, but you weren’t stuck with your choice forever.

I do think there is an issue with the way the gear is down scaled when a level 80 has lower level gear on. I think the gear is getting down scaled according to the wearer’s level, when it should be getting down scaled according to its level. For example, if a level 80 goes into a level 25 area decked out in level 25 gear, the gear shouldn’t be down scaled. That may be the source of the folks complaining that it’s too difficult.

It stinks that certain folks can’t just let the filter be and have to try to bypass it with spaces.

My suggestion for ANet would be to check if the words before and after the space against a dictionary to see if they’re real words (and of course not on the naughty list). That way only the misspelled and abbreviated stuff will get unfairly kittened.

Level Scaling is not for "rewards"

" Maybe a player should be able to set their down scaling options once they hit 80 to increase the challenge."

I agree, as long as rewards scale up accordingly (so if you remain at regular challenge you still get the mats for that level instead of silk or gossmer).

But what about the high level characters that have switched to a different crafting profession or are trying to take advantage of the market for low tier crafting items, but still want challenging fights? If I go into a starter land, I’m looking for jute not silk. Most of my jute has come from salvaging, so I don’t mind the lower level drops. It’s also nice for gearing up the alts.

I understand wanting the rewards to match the challenge, so I think you should get a currency bonus for upping your difficulty (karma/money/xp), but I’d rather still get at least half area appropriate drops.

Level Scaling is not for "rewards"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pandemoniac.4739

Pandemoniac.4739

Downscaling has no other purpuse than to make the fights every where in the world hard for a lvl80, so that it can remain a challenge to roam around the world, regardless of level.

Yeah, the fights are easy for a down scaled 80, but the aren’t as easy as if you weren’t down scaled at all. The problem with down scaling too drastically is that it prevents folks that are less skilled than you probably are from drastically over levelling the content to make it easier.

One way City of Heroes got around this was to let you set your difficulty for instances – you could up difficulty and the simulated number of players on the team. Maybe a player should be able to set their down scaling options once they hit 80 to increase the challenge.

As far as incurring level 80 costs, well I have non-existent repair bills in low level areas because the fights are so easy. To play with friends I generally have to take one way point to connect up with them and that few silver is earned back rather quickly. If the way point costs don’t scale with your actual level, then high levels just bank money in the high level zones, and use it to zoom around the low level areas to farm DEs.

I don’t find either the way point costs or the repair costs out of line – I always come out ahead after a play session.

I think beta players owe the rest of us an apology...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pandemoniac.4739

Pandemoniac.4739

Actually using “we” as a call to action for like minded folks is perfectly appropriate. Don’t spoil it by claiming you and like minded folks are in the majority. Unless you’ve somehow got a list of everyone that plays GW2 and taken a survey of a statistically significant sample of those players, then, by all means go ahead. I don’t know if the disgruntled are many or just vocal, so I’ll just stick to what I do know, which is my opinion.

I’m happy with my pre-purchase, bugs and all. I had a blast in the beta and I’m still having a blast now at level 75 on my main. I haven’t done a single boring thing that I didn’t want to do to get there. I didn’t farm at all. I just played.

I feel that ANet has made a game they can be proud of and I feel that the dev team is responsive to player concerns. Every change I’ve seen them make since the first beta has been in the right direction for me and how I like to play. I’m still highly recommending the game and have already turned a couple of my co-workers into similarly avid players. I did warn one co-worker off, because it wasn’t his type of game and he probably wouldn’t enjoy it.

I logged in to the forums to send them a little “thank you” for changing things around near Sleekfur encampment to drive off the bots. There are a lot of annoyances, but every time I log in, I notice a little bit of progress, and there’s still plenty to do (for me, and how I like to play) that allows me to avoid the annoyances until they’re fixed. Other games haven’t allowed me to play around the inevitable issues nearly as well as GW2 has. (Diablo 3 and SWTOR I’m looking at you when I say that!)

I get that people are disappointed that their expectations weren’t met and that because there’s no subscription to cancel, y’all don’t feel you’re being heard. I don’t know what can be done about that except for you to ask for your account to be closed. I’m doubtful that ANet will ever change the game enough to suit your play style, no matter how hard you complain.

Orr and went back to explore the maps that I hadn’t been through yet, they were so easy that they bored the hell out of me.

If all you’re talking about is killing stuff, you’re right, low level areas are easy for down scaled 80s. If all you’re doing is fighting, I can see how it would be boring. I’m still finding it fun because I’m more interested in looking for hidden areas, talking to the NPCs and figuring out the story behind what’s going on, and helping out the other players in the area.

I don’t see how any game could provide infinite PvE end game content that was always challenging but not repetitive and boring, if you’re only interested in fighting mobs. PvP will always be the one thing that stays fresh combatwise, because humans are tricksy and computer AI is not.

The only way folks can get infinite replayability of a game without infinite content is if they’re playing it with other people, not just in the presence of other people. The RPers do this by using the game world as a room full of environments and props to create collaborative stories. Our guild does this by helping the lower level folks through dungeons, or setting up jumping puzzle night, or deciding that we’ve had enough of the wall phasing, flying cheaters on server X in WvW and we’re going to show them they don’t have free run of our borderlands.

If you aren’t the type to set your own goals and challenges, there will always come a point in every game where you have completed every measurable goal that the game has to offer. I think expecting it to be otherwise is unrealistic. PvE content can not be generated faster than people rushing through it can complete it.

I prefer guildhead.com. I think both are as safe as any other mainstream site out there as long as you don’t use the same credentials to log in there as you do to log in your games. If you’re just going there without logging in, I use both frequently and haven’t seen any evidence that someone is trying to compromise my security and I have my machine locked down pretty tight.

Keep your operating system, browser, and browser plug-ins (flash, javascript, et. al) patched, don’t have admin rights on your every day account and the risk is pretty low.

I know for a fact that the gold sellers have harvested e-mail addresses from Curse, so don’t think because a site is well known and extensive that you don’t have to take steps to protect yourself. On the contrary, larger sites are more attractive targets. I use unique e-mail addresses for every single site I have to register for, so I know exactly where the spammers got a particular e-mail address.

Level Scaling is not for "rewards"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pandemoniac.4739

Pandemoniac.4739

I’ve been running the lower level areas at 75 just to do some exploring and map completion stuff. I like the level scaling because even though the content is easier for me, I can participate in events without completely screwing it up for lower level folks.

There were a couple of fast respawning, veteran jungle raptors in Metrica that were stomping folks participating in an event to collect raptor eggs. It was kind of an epic battle – leading them away from the bodies so someone else could get in there and revive, trying not to get stomped ourselves. We got both of them and their brood of hatchlings down, paused for a high five, and they respawned.

It was a blast. If I had been able to go in there and single handedly wipe them out, I would not have had as much fun. Was the karma/xp reward worth the time I spent? I probably could have done much better karma per hour elsewhere, but I don’t think it would have been as interesting.

Level scaling let me be part of the team, not some deus ex machina. I really don’t understand when folks say they’ve run out of content. I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface.

Some folks want mounts and cheaper way points, but I usually end up walking everywhere unless my guild mates are waiting on me. Even if I’ve been through the area before, sometimes I notice things I didn’t see before or find an event that I missed, and there’s always crafting materials to harvest and occasionally other players that can use some help. I don’t get maximum rewards in the lower areas – about 60/40 area level items to my level items – but I get something so it’s not a complete waste of time.

I like the idea of being able to right click on an ingredient I know how to make and in addition to “Buy more on the trading post” see “Show me the recipe”. When I first started cooking, I sort of expected to be able to do that.

However, the search function is actually quite useful because it shows recipes with search text in both the recipe name and ingredient list. “dough” brings up both the dough recipe and all my pie recipes, so it usually only takes a couple of searches to get to the recipes I’m looking for to create something else… I can live with that for now.

To combat spammers, limit number of mails per day

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pandemoniac.4739

Pandemoniac.4739

This is not a good solution because mail is the only way we have to give an item directly to another player.

My husband and I pass things back and forth all the time when we’re duoing together and one of us finds something that the other can use. I would be really unhappy if a limit on the number of mails per day prevented me from sending my extra food out to my guild mates after a craftathon. I give away extra dyes all the time too.

The solution with the least impact to players (not to developers though) is to do what the free e-mail sites do – spam filters and folders.

I did get a good amount of vanilla from the Asura starting area herbs though. The wiki says chilies can drop from any herb plant 1-70, but it seems to me like different ingredients come from different regions.

How Do You Forget a Craft?

The crafting tables will only show you ingredients in the discovery tab that can be used to discover a recipe for that craft that you haven’t discovered yet. There’s no need to forget the other craft, just don’t go to the crafting tables for that discipline.

If you can’t figure out the recipe, go to guildhead.com, search on the ingredient, then sort by discipline and see what can be made from it.

Spinach for example is an ingredient in potions of Nightmare Court slaying:
http://www.guildhead.com/item/12241/spinach-leafplleaves#ingredient-for;sort:discipline,id

(you have to copy & paste the link, the forum code doesn’t like it)
Potions generally take water and dust. If you put those two ingredients in your recipe discovery at an artificer table, only the other items used for potions will highlight.

And really, no one is ever going to get banned for roleplaying, that would be terrible public relations.

Yes, I don’t think being a jerk is a bannable act, unless you’re a really offensive jerk. Just being elitist and rude doesn’t cut it.

@ThiBash – If folks don’t respect my “personal space” so to speak, they shouldn’t expect me to respect theirs.

I never interfere with the RPers if they aren’t interfering with me. If they’re in my way, I will RP a little with them to let them know and most of them are cool with that and work it in to whatever they’re doing so that I can get on with what I’m doing. I haven’t run into any situations in GW2 that I felt the RPers were in my way though. I’m doubtful they had any impact on the Krait slaver event – that one is rough if it’s the one I’m thinking of.

On the other hand, is it so hard to be polite to someone who’s trying to speak to you in your language? Half the fun of RPing is reacting to the unexpected paths other folks’ take the story. To this day, I remember a D&D session a couple decades ago (ugh more than two, I’m ancient) where we were adventuring through some cave and the DM threw a giant spider at us. All of my companions readied their spells and their weapons, but when it came to me, I ran as fast as I could the other direction (I hate spiders, and all of my characters at the time did too). The result was comical and fun and involved people getting knocked down and fireballs misfiring. I guarantee you that wasn’t what the DM had originally planned, but he rolled with it and we had a blast.

Also to be fair, the OP’s reaction would also be in character… if I was a character in that village and almost died trying to defend it against a horde of kraitt, and after the battle I went into an inn to rest and refresh myself and found 10 heavily armed people just chatting around that didn’t help during the attack, I’d also yell at them (in character, of course)… actually would have been kinda fun from a roleplaying point of view to react to that (also in character) and if they did well instead of just saying “we’re roleplaying, go away” might actually end up with someone finding out that he might enjoy it instead of leaving with a bad impression of roleplayers in general…

I’m not a role player, but I do enjoy giving rpers material to work with. I have to say some of my more enjoyable exchanges with folks online have been drive-by rping where I’ll interact for a couple of moments and then head off to whatever I was doing.

The folks described by the OP are terrible RPers if their reaction to another player coming in after the event and telling them, in character, that they’re cowardly layabouts was (( ignore the troll )).

It’s shameful really that they think that’s role playing. I despise the (()) convention. If you’re in character, stay in character, and that includes telling someone to get lost.

One thing that helps with the immersion is to talk to NPCs that have names, i.e. not just Citizen. Some don’t have much dialog, but they all add flavor. The lore is there, you just have to be more proactive. Traditional questing is more like reading a book – the author takes you where they want you. GW2 is more like visiting unfamiliar places without a guidebook. You have to talk with the locals to get the full experience.
You can just run around looking at the signs, but you’ll only see the tourist traps and miss the really good stuff

I was going to type out a long reply, but I like how you said it. I’ve never been the type that liked being told what to do, so I think the things that make the OP sad are the things that make me love this game.

I like Hoelbrak’s hunting lodge feel. I’ve never been a big city girl and I’d rather hang out with a bunch of boasting hunters than gossiping nobles

Lions Arch is where I spend most of my time though, mostly because Zommoros lives there. And there are some really lovely spots if I feel like a swim.

What I really like about GW2

Even my personal favourite “pointless” activity of trying to explore/climb everything is rewarded to some extent with jump puzzles. I’m sure for most people the drops from the chests don’t in any way compensate for the time and effort required to find and complete the puzzles but personally I almost don’t care what the reward actually is.

I’m with you – the exploring is by far my favorite thing about GW2. The chests are only interesting because I found them, not because of what was in them.

I’m level 73 now and have no idea how I got that high. The highest level zone I’ve played in was the Iron Marches (which I promptly left because there were too many bugged events/hearts). It was awesome to be able to leave and not have to drop a bunch of quests, figure out which other zone was level appropriate, then go run around and pick up more quests. I may head back now that there’s been another patch.

Both my crafting skills are under 250 and I don’t particularly care. I’ve only got several gold in the bank, but I do have some nice looking Norn boots, all my traits unlocked, my guild backpack, some decent weapons I bought off the TP, the runes I want, and a silly cook’s outfit for when I’m puttering around in town.

I haven’t felt one second of pressure to do anything I didn’t feel like doing. I know some folks have more fun when they’re working hard to get to some goal, but man, I do that all day at work. I play to have a break.

I appreciate that y’all are organizing the threads; it helps those of us that search. It would be great if we could get a direct link to the thread, or part of the thread title, when we get the moved thread notice. With all the activity on the forums, the moved thread can be three or more pages away from the first page of the forum. If I had a hint of which thread it was that got moved, I could find it through my profile.

Is there something I can do to get you information on the forum weirdness that would help you track down particular problems, or do y’all already have a pretty good idea of what’s going on?

I have access to a lot of different browsers and devices and I’m willing to run some tests for you if it would be helpful. I like puzzles and I’ve been trying to sort out what causes my quote/report/edit buttons to disappear but haven’t had enough time to do it properly. I’ll make the time if the results would be more useful than just satisfying my own curiosity.

Pink for October - Breast Cancer Awareness

I don’t have time to find the source right now because my lunch break is about to end but I’ve seen research that suggestions “awareness” campains can actually make people LESS likely to donate money towards the cause they support.

I vaguely remember the same thing – folks feel like wearing pink or changing their facebook page is doing something, so they don’t donate. Being aware that folks are looking for a cure for breast cancer isn’t the same thing as knowing what you could do to help.

I think the sponsored activities generate more help – marathons, hikes, bike rides, et. al. We had one of our executive management rappel down the side of a skyscraper to raise money for Make a Wish – we all chipped in to see that

  • This workshop is too small for the two of us: Make a core crafting hub inside your “home” part of the city, (snip)

I really like this idea! While I do NOT think that the vendors and crafters should be moved out of the common areas of the city, I would love to see implemented something where in your home instance it recognizes the two crafting skills you have selected (if any), and will place the appropriate stations and vendors in an area. That would give those seeking solace while crafting a place to go, and give us more reason to spend time in our “home” instance.

I love this idea too – post it up in the suggestions section. It might get overlooked in a thread this long. I wouldn’t move anything outside the instance around, but it would be nice for extended crafting sessions to hang out at home. Eir gets to work at home on her craft!

I loved the HOM, even though I pretty much stunk at the actual game play in GW1. I still go look over my collection of minis from my 7 years of birthday presents every once in a while. Maybe we’ll get display cases in our home instance.

I wouldn’t mind commissioning some sculptures from Eir to commemorate some of the more memorable moments. A monument for Tybalt would be nice.

Guild Wars 2: A Hardcore Gamer's Prospective (Long Read)

I appreciate the time and the thought you put into your write up – it’s not my experience with the game, but it was an interesting read. And shame on the folks who insist on exhuming the “this isn’t WoW vs. Wow is better” dead horse and beating it again in every thread that has something the least bit critical in it.

It’s rough when the folks you play with move on to another game and dealing with the clueless in WvW is always frustrating. The nice thing about no subscription is you can put the game on the shelf and come back after some issues have been resolved without having to fork out any more money. The dungeon token problem is a big one, and explains why so many folks at 80 are unhappy. I’m hopeful it will be fixed soon.

I play too many games to be as hard core as you are, so most of the issues that need fixing aren’t affecting my fun yet. I’m 72ish and have yet to step foot in Orr or get any crafting skill above 250. What have I been doing? Honestly, I couldn’t tell you but I’ve been having a blast doing it

I think the problem is that we are treating all items as if they are consumables. Refrigerators are sold in stores and not on markets. I think the current system works well for crafting materials and consumables like food or upgrades, but for armor and weapons it’s not so great.

I’m posting this from my phone. I’ll add more detail when I’m at a full size keyboard.

Cooking broken...?

5) Start discovering by adding first the non-basic ingredients that you crafted. Note how many other “available unknown recipes” are there using that ingredient. If there’s just 1 then you won’t ever need to craft it again (unless you want to mass-produce that food) – so don’t if you value your bags space!
If it’s more than one, from here you can either craft that X number or just 1 at a time, use it for a discovery, craft another until you can’t find anything new with the available ingredients or it turns red. Which brings us to:

I totally missed the “available unknown recipes”, thanks for pointing it out. I mean I saw it, but I didn’t really think about the implications.

If you’re not in a rush to 400, leveling by discoveries is totally feasible. More enjoyable too, if you ask me

I’m cooking for fun and for an excuse to explore different regions. I’m stuck around 225 right now because of a lack of dill, so I’m off to Dredgehaunt of Blazeridge I think.

Allowing folks to vendor through Black Lion

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Pandemoniac.4739

Pandemoniac.4739

I think the best way to deal with it would be to remove the floor pricing on the trading post. Then the prices of these items could meet the demand price, and people might just realize that it’s usually better to find a vendor (or use a waypoint to reach one) than it is to post this stuff to the trading post.

There are some items that are worthless – no one will buy them at any price. Allowing them to go up on the market at an even lower price isn’t likely to change anything. It just lowers the listing cost to make it even more attractive to use the TP as an extension of your inventory. Toss everything up there, pull it off when you get back into town and vendor it for full price – 1C listing fee.

Thinking about it, I wonder now if all those worthless items on the TP are really an issue as long as the databases can handle the volume. I’m not talking about crafting materials as much as items that are less than rare quality. Maybe I’m trying to solve a problem that isn’t really a problem.

In the real world there’s a certain point where stocks get delisted from an exchange, although I’m not sure what happens in the commodity markets. Do they just make bigger contracts when a commodity loses much of it’s value?

Now I don’t care one way or the other I just though it was intrusting that a company would hire people for NA servers that can’t speak proper English.
I hope i dont get a ban for this

I think you meant interesting. And they weren’t speaking English, they were writing it. I think your bigotry will probably just be ignored and I doubt they’ll bother to ban you. If English is your first language, you should probably become more fluent in it before you criticize folks that are writing it as a second language.

I find it depressing that someone would focus on a couple of minor grammatical problems that are obviously due to English not being the writer’s first language instead of being appreciative that the forums have 24-7 moderators. The meaning of what the moderators wrote is clear.

OK, now I’m even more depressed that someone with a communication challenge like dyslexia can’t have some compassion for folks writing English as a second language.
