He might start thinking he knows what’s right for you.

I know it’s a really minor thing, but I also would like to be able to see how other folks see my character’s nameplate in PVE, even if it just pops up when I press CTRL.
The redundant threads are probably because search is not working all that well, so even the folks that do look aren’t finding much. I have mad search fu and wasn’t able to find threads I knew existed. If you see a redundant thread and you know of another exact same thread, flag it and ask the moderators to merge it.
If a thread goes off topic, don’t keep posting in it. Flag the off topic post and let the moderators help get it back on track. Just because you started the thread doesn’t mean you should be able to squash the discussion.
I think a lot of folks are viewing moderators as the Imposers of Infractions when they are in actuality here to keep the forums useful. The community can help them do that by bringing things to their attention.
If you’re in a thread that is missing the report flag, there’s a work around. Just click on the permanent link, and edit the end of the url so that it is /postnumber/report.

City of Heroes did something like this with complementary emotes… like /slap and /slapreact or /alakazam and /alakazamreact.
I actually liked that system better than emotes that forced other folks to animate a certain way because a group of folks really familiar with the emotes could chain them and recombine them with sometimes hilarious results. Although COH did have a macro/hotkey system – not sure how well it would work without quick access.
yay I did it! So pleased :-)
Good for you! I love figuring out the hard ones.
Although, if I had a silver for every one I made harder than it really was, I’d be a wealthy Norn…
Every race’s main city has a portal to Lion’s arch. You don’t have to queue for WvW. In the first beta it took me a while to realize the portal that I thought headed to a higher level area was in fact the portal to the main city.
We won’t know the overall success of Guild Wars 2 until NCSoft releases their earnings report. Success is not measured in number of players, it’s measured in dollars (or in Korean won). The number of people playing the game is only tangentially related to how much money is being brought in, as was pointed out earlier in the thread.
If I were a gambler, I’d bet that GW2 was a solid success, and will continue to be in the 4th quarter.
The idea of giving suggestions to this part of forum are those that adds something new to the current game mechanics. Combos looks a fun addition, but I somewhat doubt one of the devs will spend his time on trying to add such a thing to this game.
Well, because none of us have any idea how hard or how easy something is to implement, I think we should offer whatever we come up with and let the Devs sort it out. Besides, sometimes crazy ideas inspire other more practical ideas, so I say keep them coming.
I think the training area in the heart of the mists is fine for figuring out build effectiveness. I don’t think the value of a DPS meter outweighs the drawbacks.
I love the toy concept in this game, an I think this suggestion takes it to the next level. You know we will need musical instruments next, right?
That makes sense, if that’s what they were going for. Guess I just thought they were “in it to win it this time” and all that.
I think it makes more sense from a business perspective to keep a smaller user base REALLY happy, than a larger base sorta happy.
As soon as the next new thing comes along, the sorta happy folks disappear and you have to figure out how to replace them. The really happy folks not only cost less to keep around, they’re usually “promoters” that help bring new people in.
My guess from looking at the longevity of the original GW is that ANet understands this quite well.
ArenaNet isn’t going to sink a lot of time and money into supporting something that only appeals to a very small niche crowd. We need more people to like and enjoy this game if we want to see it grow for years to come.
The business model for this game suits itself very well to filling a niche. A devoted base of fans that like the game enough to spend money in the gem shop and buy expansions will keep the game successful.
The reasons that the average MMO players don’t like this game are the same reasons that I love this game and continue to spend money on it. The average MMO player already has games that cater to the lowest common denominator. Me and my gaming dollars are quite happy in this niche.
The quick answer is to open up your hero panel and look at the weapon skills tab. It will show you all of the weapons you can equip and where, as well as what skills they give you.
I agree with op that these hidden stories should be somehow pointed out. I remember from playing a certain single player game, the name evades me atm, in every inn there was a bartender or a local barfly and if you asked him or her, he would tell you rumors about the place, giving you hints at what might be interesting to explore out there. Like telling about a certain cave or about a certain strange location and so on.
But it is implemented this way… or at least similarly. You talk to a priest outside a graveyard during the day, he tells you about a ghost that haunts the area at night. The difference is that there isn’t one NPC that is the hint giver, so you have to explore a bit more.
If you’re impatient, most of the out of the way type stuff can be found documented online. Often you can find these hidden things with no hints at all, which has been a major part of my enjoyment.
I like the conversations with named NPCs regardless of whether they’re hint givers – they give some background on the area or say something amusing most of the time.
You also can get hints of things to do by talking with named NPCs. There are ghosts in the graveyards, veterans guarding chests in underground ruins, et. al.
Most of my side quests are ones I come up with myself. There are no resource node or mob spawns that are in an area that can’t be reached (at least that I’ve found). Those trees or mines at the tops of cliffs have lead me on some interesting explorations
I have the same issue, and I wasn’t able to find some of the older articles using the RSS feed.
So I wanted to revisit this thread because I had another affirmation that GW2 was the best money I’ve spent on a game in a long while.
I spent a little less money on Diablo 3, and I felt like I got OK value for my money. My first play through was great, and I put 100 or so hours in until it wasn’t fun. There have been a couple updates since I stopped playing, so I went to check them out, and realized that there was nothing that Blizzard could change (that doesn’t involve making an entirely different game) that would make me want to play again. It’s sad because I love the franchise
Contrast that with GW2, where I’m 250 or so hours in, I haven’t even come close to doing everything I want to do in the game (one of these days, I will make my level 80 finish her personal story and go into Orr), and I’m really looking forward to the Halloween content. The game isn’t perfect, but every time I log in, I notice some small improvement. Every issue I have with GW2 is likely to be fixed over time, and at the pace I play, new content will probably be added faster than I can finish it.
I feel a little guilty about taking advantage. Maybe I’ll go buy some more stuff in the gem store.
It’s not like fixing thse things needs to be done by coders or animators (who are probably busy with other things). Anyone can search the text string database and correct them in seconds.
Annoyances that don’t block progress (and aren’t really offensive as a misspelling of goons was) should be done when they can get to it.
On my team, when we’ve got big issues to sort out, we don’t allow anyone to touch anything unrelated unless it is also an important fix. When the big issues are fixed, the cosmetic fixes can be pushed out in another build. My guess would be that they are collecting reports of the typos and will fix them enmasse.
Frankly, given the number of conversations in this game, I’m surprised I haven’t seen more typos. I’ve got a whole chat tab I’ve labelled “Story” to snag the NPC conversations, and have seen very few issues.
I was doing some edits and thought I should point out one thing, 50% isn’t the end retention. It is the 40 day retention my guess is that the 90 day retention will look a lot different.
Also sadly as most people know people don’t come back to games these days they just go back to their last game or wait for the next game(sad reality but it is a reality).
I’m sure that ANet appreciates you taking the time to give them your honest and comprehensive feedback.
Just a quibble though – I assume that you play with folks that have similar taste to yours, so it would make sense to me that if you’re disappointed with the game, most of the folks you play with would be disappointed also. I don’t think you can draw a lot of conclusions from the fact that about 50% of some unknown sample size of people who have about the same taste in games moved on to other games.
I fully expect the overall population to drop, and I’m not too worried about it because the game doesn’t rely on a subscription model. The folks that like this game, REALLY like this game, and will probably be dropping more than $180/year on average. It’s something that can’t be known by the public until NCSoft publishes their quarterly report. Number of people playing != success for Guild Wars 2.
The DEs are much more fun with folks more spread out (I have been avoiding the high level areas) so I see the population leveling out as sort of a good thing. WvWvW still seems pretty hot and heavy in our matchups during peak times, so I’m not seeing an issue with the folks that realize this isn’t their type of game taking off.
Green beans are for a fairly low level stew recipe I bought from a heart vendor -somewhere in Wayfarer Foothills I think.
“Tell” is spelled teel in the Defecting Renegades speech bubble. Just thought I’d point it out.
I noticed this the other night – also there is a section in the conversation where the defector repeats the same response twice.
When you have some time, a once over of the conversations for this particular event chain might be worthwhile.
When looking at the overall design of a class, one of the big things that helps someone decide what they want to be is not only weapon choices, but if that class is a melee class or range class.
I think that assumption is the underlying problem. Why should I have to choose a particular class mechanic because I prefer ranged combat? What if I don’t like pets? What if I hate the way heavy armor looks, but I want to melee?
You aren’t looking at the overall design of a class if you immediately sort them into ranged/melee. You might as well complain that you can’t sort them into tank/healer/dps. The differences among the professions are not the traditional distinctions, and I think that’s a good thing.
Yes, it makes understanding how to play your class more challenging. You can’t assume when you see someone in heavy armor that your best strategy will be to keep them at range. Guild Wars combat has always been more challenging for me (in both games, GW1 more so) because you have to be really situationally aware if you want to be effective
Yeah, if you’re a zerger, you don’t have to worry about that much, but when you’re in a smaller group or solo and you’re facing off against a champ or a skilled player who understands their class, you will get your butt handed to you if you think a ranger is just about shooting things with a bow.
I always talk to named NPCs – you don’t always get an event, but you always get some information, even if it’s just more background on the area you’re in. I ran into a friendly (conned green) human separatist who apparently didn’t realize I was the same person that just trashed their camp. She was looking out over a huge camp of ogres and we had a short conversation about how conflicted she was about the pact with the Charr and what her motivations were for being a separatist. It was interesting.
Talking to an NPC I found in a cave caused her to show me the jump I had to make to find a hidden chest. I just love that I can find hidden areas and such just by being observant and curious.
This would really help us out also. I’m in one of the larger guilds and we’re trying to figure out a way to consolidate our 4 guilds that won’t involve having to re-invite a bunch of folks and that won’t drive our guild leadership crazy.
I’m one of those silly folks that doesn’t cook to level. I’ve gotten to level 80 without getting any crafting to 400. I want to do all of the discoveries, and still be able to cook food to use.
I have to pay for a lot of my ingredients, which I’m fine with. I have to travel all over the place to open up karma vendors for certain ingredients. I’m fine with that too. It shouldn’t be as difficult as it is to find certain ingredients that are used in a lot of recipes.
First off, I think it’s awesome that some ingredients are regional. What I don’t think is awesome is that some ingredients are not only regional, but also random drops. What’s even less awesome is that these difficult to get ingredients are required for recipes that are on the “critical path” as we like to say at work.
I’m not sure if there’s just too wide a variety of things that can drop from herb nodes for how many there are that spawn, or if the key ingredients (dill and rosemary for me – I’m certain other folks are stuck on other things like vanilla) are too rare. I have so many zucchini that I’m giving them away to everyone I know (just like in real life :/ ), but I can’t find more the 3 puny sprigs of rosemary (unlike real life, where I have a rosemary bush that’s trying to devour my house).
Maybe we could have some herb patches similar to the pumpkin, potato, et. al. spawns? I’m fine with it being up a jump puzzle or guarded by Veterans – at 2s a sprig it would be worth my time.
I get why these ingredients were moved off of the vendors, and fully support it, but we need a more reliable way to harvest items we’re likely to use a lot of.

Actually, most games don’t detect it and I’m sorta thrilled that all I have to do to switch to my headphones in GW2 is go into options. Every other game, I have to exit out and restart.
I guess I’m a little confused about why you can’t select your device from the drop down. Is there a bug or something specific to your set up?
I was getting map completion done in Dredgenaught and one of the skill points is a skritt named Kakkilak in a dredge mining suit that was, ahem, “abandoned” by the Dredge. The dialogue was so amusing I had to run it again. I wish I could remember more of it exactly.
“You had a bite of loser cake, but you learn quick-quick”
This sounds like a bunch of fun. I may have to shame our guild into doing something similar on our server.
I agree with you that questions that have a specific sub-forum should be left in that sub-forum, although I don’t agree with you that this forum (Players helping Players – just in case we get moved to suggestions) is useless.
Questions that don’t fit anywhere else, like “how do I make money?” should be moved here, but if you are asking a question about structured PvP in the structured PvP forum, it doesn’t make sense to move it.
I thought for sure I had seen a thread that suggested this before, but search refuses to co-operate.
There has been a number of discussions about the lack of socializing going on, and I think that there are a number of guilds willing to step up and organize events, but there’s no good place to announce the events where the posts stick around for a while on the first page and get seen.
I think a companion to the fan-generated content sub-forum in the Community section might help get the ball rolling.
I hadn’t thought about using the invisible bag to stash stuff to sell on the TP – I’m going to steal your idea and stop using it for my spare weapons.
Maybe what we need is a way to lock a bag so the contents don’t show up for vendors, TP, the crafting discovery panel, the forge, or anywhere else you could accidentally hose yourself.
Zommorros has been gifted more than one of my spare weapons unfortunately.
I like the idea. I am often (embarrassingly) dead at the bottom of rocks-that-should-not-be-jumped-on-by-amateurs. I have no idea if there’s anyone in the area that might be detouring to rescue me and I usually just release because I tend to be in out of the way areas.
I was looking for something completely different and happened to spot the chest, then spent a few hours (not continuously) tracing it back and trying to find the start. I got really stuck on the entrance too, until I decided asking people for help didn’t count as cheating in an MMO because you’re supposed to work together.
I’m dying to know if anyone actually found it on their own, or if it’s always been something you get help with.
The only game change I’ve ever gotten really upset about was Star Wars Galaxies when they completely changed the fundamental mechanics. That was more sad than angry though. I do speak up if I think something is broken, but I don’t get too heated about it.
I believe ANet wants to make a great game, not just a profitable one. There are lots of opinions on what a great game is, but I don’t doubt their intentions, so I don’t get too worked up. And that’s just my opinion of course, lots of folks seem to feel otherwise.
I watch almost all of the vistas. Often they have hints to chest areas and hidden jumping puzzles. I’ve been trying to find them without looking at gw2cartographers.com. Only one I’ve caved in on was the particularly tricky entrance to one in Lion’s Arch. I was so excited about finding the other two and a guild mate pointed out there was a third. I could see where I thought it ended, but I was I was stumped when I tried to figure out the start.
Lol, yeah I always preview before posting to make sure the filter didn’t mangle something. I’ve learned lots of new ways to be offensive should te need arise

So I was crafting in Hoelbrak last night and noticed that someone from ANet arranged a therapy session for that poor crazy woman. She’s much quieter, much less repetitive, and has even learned a new sentence.
Thank you!
Using way points too often drains your bank account in two ways, the actual cost and all of the stuff you miss out on by not harvesting and killing as you walk.
There are a lot of crafting materials that sell well that don’t need to be harvested in the highest tier areas. I like steady income over gambling for high value items though. I always log out with more money than I started with, unless I upgrade my gear on the TP which isn’t that often.
I’ve found that if there is a large gap between your equipped weapons level and your actual level, you will find things more challenging than they should be when you’re down scaled. I haven’t noticed anything with armor, so it may just be a DPS reduction.
I figured out the hard way that I had forgotten to keep my underwater weapons up to date My level 80 has exotic weapons, but she’s still wearing a mix of rares and less for her armor and the lower level areas are really easy. The upside is that my repair bills are really low, although I rarely die any more.
I just want to echo the sentiment that you should give the classes a try rather than giving too much weight to the negative posts on the forums. My ranger has almost cured my altitis – I got her up to 80 without even trying. There are some bugs with certain skills, but I haven’t found them to interfere too much with PVE.
The main difference between rangers and warriors as ranged DPS
I like the pet mechanic. Your choice of pet complements your build and you get to roam the world looking for new pets to tame. I tend to micro-manage my pet, so I don’t see the same problems a lot of folks complain about in the forums.
I have only played the warrior up to level 15. My impression was that I would likely play a warrior as mostly melee and switch to ranged in certain situations. I play the ranger as all ranged, although I did try a melee weapon on my swap for a while. It’s really what you enjoy.

Is there any syntax we can put into the search box to narrow our results? With more than 100 pages of posts in the General Discussion sub-forum, it’s getting really hard to find the thread I remember seeing, but don’t remember the exact title of…
Some search engines have syntax like +requiredTerm, “whole phrase”, title:keyword that aren’t always exposed in a nice UI, but I wasn’t able to find any information if there was anything similar for the GW2 forum search.
Searching the full text of every post is really getting me down – I know it isn’t returning all possible results and looking for the thread someone made with tips for making gold really returns a lot of unrelated stuff.
I really appreciate the effort that the moderators are making to keep the forums clean, and a more robust search feature will make it possible for the community to help keep the number of redundant threads down.
I had to interact with it from the front instead of the back where it seemed most logical. I didn’t notice exactly where the hit box was though.
You were lucky, Pandemoniac. I received a PM about thread moving, but it linked only to the forum instead of the thread.
The link was still to the forum, but having the title allowed me to find the thread again through my forum profile. Not perfect, but much better.
I think having a specific option to report folks not participating in a PvP match is a good idea. It doesn’t really fall under any of the current options and it really impacts the other folks on the team.
ANet will penalize you for abusing the reporting system, so it would have to be pretty flagrant for me to report folks. I don’t think I would have hesitated to report the guy in your example, Ezrael.
I found an Ogre merchant in the Northern part of Iron Marches near the bridge by the Gladefall waypoint that sold them. I don’t know if he’s always there.
I think that the underlying problem with the “why are you playing an MMO if you don’t want to socialize” is that you’re equating meeting new people with socializing. I play MMOs over single player games because I like playing with (and competing against) other people. That doesn’t mean I want to meet and play with new people every time I log in.
And yes, every party has its wallflowers… sometimes all it takes to get them off the wall is someone asking them if they want to dance
The party analogy got me thinking… maybe we need a “Second Saturdays” type player organized mixer. The second Saturday of each month folks that are looking to socialize gather in one of the cities during prime time for the server. Guilds that are recruiting could send some folks to represent them and maybe help organize some ice breakers. It would help the folks looking to meet people to play with find each other. What do y’all think?
Right now there is just no reason to communicate with your fellow player, zero, zilch.
To me GW2 is like a party and games with forced grouping are more like speed dating. Speed dating requires you to interact with people, a party gives you a setting to socialize but only requires interaction if they start rolling out the party games (dungeons). The problem with forced grouping is that unlike speed dating, most of the people in the room aren’t there to meet someone, they’re there to get the group content done.
Group content doesn’t automatically require a lot of interaction, especially if most of the folks participating have done it before. I ran into that problem in DDO – loved the quests in that game, but the pugs rushed through the group content so fast I had no idea what was going on. I didn’t meet anyone to put on my friends list that way. I still had to go out to chat and ask around for like-minded folks.
I’ve found plenty of opportunities to interact with folks in GW2 – helping them find things, admiring their name or their dye choices, helping with champs et. al. There’s no game mechanic that will let you connect with someone else without the risk that they will “reject” you. Whether you’re in a group or not, you have to initiate a conversation at some point that is more than “who’s the main tank and who’s the off tank?”.
Maybe we should start a thread in Players Helping Players with a list of suggestions on how to meet folks.
Well I don’t see ANet waving a “mission accomplished” banner around, so my guess is that they’re still working on it. I appreciated hearing some progress was being made.

Same here. I haven’t had a spam e-mail in about a week. I have gone into Lion’s Arch multiple times and didn’t have a single chat spammer to report/block. I also noticed in the Dev Tracker that about 3000 bots have been smote.
Kudos indeed!
That thread has 566 posts – are you really going to say anything about bots that hasn’t already been said? They heard you. They’re working on it.
