GvG is structured combat in the open field. Semantics to a degree but not quite the same thing.

Even if “Open field combat” was random groups vs random groups, a stat bonus would still make that diluted and even more meaningless.

New and improved open field: now the unorganized zergballs will win every fight.

So, in regards to GvG and openfield, I don’t see a lot of “rampant speculation” going on. If nothing else, you chose your words poorly. The complaints about this new system potentially killing the GvG scene is entirely grounded.

This forum and this topic in particular are about WvW. WvW is about sieging and controlling objectives and about open field combat. All our changes are with that totality in mind and will continue to be.

GvG is open field combat…

We were having a pretty good discussion in the last thread about numbers for GvGs, I think it’d be a good starting point to maybe renew that.

I think that 5-15s are best for the windmill area, because honestly, 20s feel a bit cluttered down there. I know 20s have traditionally always been there, but whenever I play a 20 in that area, I feel like it’s a lot more different to maneuver than in a more open area.

I think that guilds should start looking into other spots to GvG. I know it can be harder to coordinate pugs away from orange swords if you’re not below south camp, but it can be done. I’ve seen some really cool GvGs between west keep and garrison, and I think east of garrison is also a really underutilized spot. I’ve even had enjoyable unofficial 30s in those areas.

I agree, and encourage people to report trolls and not talk to them, so that the mods can remove their posts without having to close the threads.

I feel like 20s are a little cluttered in the windmill fight club area, honestly. The north-south/left-right maneuverability is less than 1200 range, and I feel like that leads to a lot of just straight up bombing, tanking it all, backing off to regroup, and bombing again. There’s not a lot of room for movement, flanks, re-positioning, or using terrain at all.

For 20+, I think the areas between garrison and west keep/bay, between garrison and east keep/hills, near the ruins by south camp, or straight east of garrison are much better choices. I’ve even had some good 25 and 30vs in those areas.

I like 5 to 10s, too, though, because they are a lot of fun and a very different playstyle. However, 15+ seems to translate best to actual WvW open field, which is what GvGs are meant to simulate anyways. I just feel like anything over 15 in the south camp/windmill area kind of invalidates a lot of positioning and maneuvering strategies, and tends to favor heavy stacking, or necro stacking because of it.

The new Gw2 GvG is currently in development and there will be changes to the leaderboard, much like suggested above.

- Leaderboards will show per month, with navigation to previous months.
- Your guild will only show up on the list if you have done a gvg that month.
- Scores won’t reset, with the glicko2 system it would make it impossible for the rating to stabilize.

Thats just one minor change, the entire site is being rebuilt and alot of stuff is going to change or functionalities that lacked are being added.

It will take a couple of weeks more till it’s finished due to my limited time ( this is also why registering your guild can take a bit longer than usual at the moment ).

The only issue I could see is the possibility of a guild being blacked-out of matches in order to drop them from the ranking. Say Guild ABC is a top performing GvG guild and for whatever reason, everyone they try to match against decides to either duck the match or not show up. This would result in ABC being artificially dropped from the rankings whether they deserve to be dropped or not. Without a way to force matches to happen, it might not be the best idea to arbitrarily remove a guild’s position due to having no matches played. Rating decay would likely be the better choice, but by how much I couldn’t say.

I hope that we as a community are mature enough to not “blacklist” any one guild from playing.

So, who runs the Gw2GvG site? I have an idea to accomodate older guilds like Red Guard that have since become inactive taking up spots on the leaderboards: seasons.

My idea is that we could separate GvGs into 2 month long seasons, where at the end of these, a champion from each region is decided, and all old games are scrapped from the ratings system. Then, placement would decide the initial rating points for each guild, however, the rating points would be closer (50-100 between each rank), and lower (top starts at 1500 instead of 2000ish). This way, if a guild did not GvG for a full season, they would be removed from their position, and other guilds could take their place. As long as there is a history section for older seasons, I can’t see how this could hurt old guilds’ reputations.

Example, if a new season was created now, the NA guilds for the start of that season would be rated as follows:

1.) Aggression – 1500
2.) Tempest Wolves – 1450
3.) Deathclock – 1400
4.) Os – 1350
5.) Night Shift – 1300
6-10.) 1200
10-15.) 1100
15-20.) 1000
20-30.) 900
30-40.) 800
Guilds who didn’t gvg in the previous season.) N/A
etc.

I suggest that season 1 should be treated as have already happened, and we take the rankings up until July 1st, 2013 to decide the placements. Then, we continue this season, season 2, until the first of September, where a new champion will be crowned. From there on, guilds like Red Guard would be removed from their positions, allowing other guilds to take their place. It would also encourage guilds to GvG more often than once every two months.

Hi guys, we are hosting a 3v3 tournament this Saturday and Sunday (August 17-18) which is open to all participants. It is a 3v3 deathmatch-style bracket tournament in a spvp custom arena. It is hosted during NA prime time but open to all.

Prizes are as follows:

2nd: 25 gold
3rd: 15 gold

For those that are screaming, doom an gloom, I think you might be really far off. If this is what I think it is, it will be awesome, promote open-field combat, and encourage small-mans.

What we know:
-Maps are changing, quaggans are out
-Orb-type bonuses will return
-They will be relatively easy to flip

Combining this, I think they are going to take the central area of the quaggan lake, make it a bit bigger, maybe urbanish, and make the orb held there. No door, or a door on the level of the pvp lord-door. The bonus will be given to whomever controls this area. This is essentially instituting a king-of-the-hill function to wvw, will promote players attacking a lightly- or un-fortified position, and open-field/urban fighting. THIS WOULD BE AWESOME and I hope I am right.

That would only be fun if the orb doesn’t provide a stat bonus… if it does, it means only the server with the largest zerg will be able to take the bonus from another server.

Here’s the thing to remember, it may buff the better servers for a time, but if it is relatively easy to take from a better server, it isn’t going to cause nearly the same problems that the original buff did. I will say that when this goes back into the game, we’ll continue to monitor the effects and make changes as necessary.

I feel like a lot of guilds and players will quit either way. There are way too many players that enjoy 1v1 to 5v5s and GvGs, and having to deal with the fact that one side will have a 5-15% stat discrepancy over the other is pretty intolerable. It’ll be impossible to schedule fights because we won’t know the status of the buffs before hand.

Please just take a kittening page from DAoC and put something like Darkness Falls in for the server that has the most PPT. That was the best solution; it was figured out a while ago; there’s no reason to keep trying to do something different.

I can’t echo this sentiment enough. If there’s an unfair stat bonus to any server, 1v1s, GvGs, fight clubs, etc. are going to be impossible. There is a growing GvG scene, and you will destroy it by adding any kind of stat bonus unilaterally to one server over the other.

Please talk to guild leaders before making changes like this, because it could be catastrophic to the already tiny organized guild community.

If, on the other hand, this is merely a boost to magic/gold find or karma/exp, then I’d support it. But giving a stat bonus at all to any server is a terrible decision.

Uh… we never wiped to Yumm… one time we were fighting in front of SE tower vs 30ish pugs and 15 more Yumm attacked us, so we went inside… is that wiping?

EP pushed our kitten in, though. Then again, it was EP + TSF + Pugs vs 20 [PYRO]… then they spam laughed.

Honestly, I can recount all the times we wiped, perfectly.

-Once at TC garrison, after we killed [FIRE] we wiped in lord’s room. Good job.
-Once inside TCBL west keep (or “bay” as other servers call it). Good response time, DB.
-Once outside TCBL west keep by [FIRE] and [Crit]. It was a great flank, [Crit], I like your style.
-Once again inside of TC garrison. Siege, happens.
-Once north of east keep to EP+TSF+Pugs. Necro stacks hurt melee trains.
-Last time was in east keep, same blob. We ended the raid after that, we only had about 13 left.

Never once did Yumm wipe us. I don’t really think Yumm is bad or anything… but I know they didn’t wipe us. If you did, though, congrats. Happens.

We don’t brag about the zergs we wipe on these forums because we would hit character limit.

I can’t do any fights bigger than 10v10 without dying to wells or getting caught super hard in static fields. Only half of my guild is having this issue, however, so I’m not really sure what’s going on.

This needs to be fixed immediately, or at least rolled back.

Is anyone else getting mad culling on effects without having it turned on? I can’t see friendly veils, enemy wells, or red circles at all half the time.

It will be hard for JQ to survive in lower tiers, especially T3/T4, since constant GvG keeps lower tier guilds competitive.

Once they start dropping down due to exodus, their players will have a hard time coping, since they’ve been used to winning by numbers. No wonder Agg and EMP (the real one!) left JQ. More to follow…

I saw a little of this PYRO last night.

Showed up, wiped PYRO at garrison. Smashed them again at SW garri. Saw them by bay in cover of their ac’s,guards, and portals. Attacked them anyway. Had a good long fight, had to pull back after a while because PYRO kept running in and out of bay getting health before they died. PYRO then joined another guild zerg from Maguuma and sat at the sentry for a while. PYRO took a paper hills then left the map. Conclusion: Meh

Wat. We didn’t wipe at garrison, we just left because 40 vs a queue with siege isn’t fun for anyone. Then we wiped you guys outside of garrison/west keep… three times… then we took WK and EK… got bored with you guys, and went to eternal.

Not really, it’s more like a boxing match where you’re not allowed to dodge punches like Mike. Because open field evasion “isn’t a true test of skill”. They want not the difference between a bar fight and a boxing match; no, they want a boxing match that’s focused on one fundamental skill. Just like my basketball analogy focused on one skill.

The GvG apologists are trying to push their simplified version of WvW and we don’t play that nonsense.

I wish all of the organized guilds would just leave T1. I swear, how can you deal with this many terrible players, this much skill lag, and the constant queues?

I mean, is winning really that big of a deal to most people? Because honestly, a server winning is 99% due to coverage, and that’s a very passive thing to hone… at least in open field or lower tiers, what you do as an individual actually matters.

Playing for PPT is pointless. The points will be there whether or not you do anything.

Come to T3-T5 (but not Maguuma). Ask [Agg], they seem to enjoy it. There are actually some quality guilds on servers like YB, Ebay, CD, SoS, etc. If you come down, you’ll get better fights, no queues, less pugs surrounding you and your enemies, and you get to actually make a difference.

Sometimes, [PYRO] is the only offensive force online, and when we take a couple keeps, that’s probably 1/4th of our total PPT for the night. It feels good to actually have something to do with our server’s PPT, and at the same time playing well in open field fights and having fun.

Think about it.
