How about also adding a rule:

The player first to capture the point(at a certain location) wins. Pretty much, it’ll force players to stand in the ring. Or if they run around too much to heal, the enemy will win because the enemy will cap.

I would try but I haven’t played builds good at 1 vs 1. I play support and roam that’s why this won’t work for me.

But How about Minion Necro vs. Phantasm Mesmer (no moa elite as it unsummons all Minions)
Then maybe also a spirit weapon guardian. Hehe, it’ll be 1 vs 1 but it’ll seem much more because of all the creatures.

Besides, for those pve only player this may hurt them quite hard, thus making them jumping to server which is good at that (unlike WvWvW now since the bonus are minor, not so hurt in pve), making the population of servers more extreme.
Anyway this may help since some player may like that, but I prefer solution without having pvp affecting pve or reverse, virtually forcing players play what they not really enjoy.

That’s the point. To unite the PvE and PvP community together because they affect each other.

And the buffs aren’t going to make that much of a difference. if people want to pve, they can still pve. This is more of a feature for semi-hardcore players to hard-core players who would do extra extra work for the boosts which is why this is mainly sPvP feature since most hardcore players are into sPvP rather than PvE or Wvw.

Though I do think making access to these server buffs has some problems.

Guild Wars 1 was split between NA, Europe, and Korea mainly so it was a 1/3 chance of getting Favor of the Gods whereas Guild Wars 2 has too many servers. So perhaps there could be some sort of “allaince” between servers through some “politics system” which affects not only sPvP, but WvW and Pve. This could add lots of interesting elements such as dramatic betrayals and unifications between the underdog servers.

I’ll just copy paste from another thread for a way of repopularizing sPvP and a new rewarding system:

Along with a ranking system, I think reintroducing the “favor of the gods” system will be a good way to re-popularize sPvP. For those who aren’t familiar with the favor of the gods system, here is the wiki about it from GW1:

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Favor_of_the_Gods

Basically, it was a system where players earn the server certain features such as access to certain areas from accomplishing some form of ‘heroic deed.’

How this might look in GW2 is having ranked matches of top teams
(hopefully spectator mode is implemented too at this time as this will garner lots of publicity)
fighting against the top teams of another server. The team that wins earns some the favor of the gods for the server.

As for what shape or form this favor of the gods will take, I’m thinking perhaps:

-Certain unique PvE and/or WvW buff similar to the orb in WvW.

-Players being able to buy items at a discount. Or perhaps bonus magic find buff. This would mean a lot as players on the server have a slight monetary advantage and stronger presence over the Trading Post which means serious business and giving all the more reason to send top players of the server to server vs. server tournament games.

-Having access to some locked dungeon that have amazing drops only available exclusively when players have favor of the gods.

-Implement a politic system in game and winning favor of the gods give advantage in politics

This would probably also mean locking free server transfers but I think its worth it and would give players of sPvP a new form of spirit that could possibly transform the entire sPvP community.

Great thread guys. Some positive posts in here. It’s always great to see you guys passionately voicing how the game needs to improve.

I think that dueling is a great feature, but I don’t think it’s as important (right now) as ratings or a leaderboard is. With custom arenas, people will be able to duel all day long (1v1, or 2v2, or 3v3), so it seems to me that we need to focus more on rankings and leaderboards.

To that same end, I think that other game modes are something we’ll look at down the road, but for now, I think other features are just more important (like rankings, custom arenas where people can practice in private, leaderboards, spectator mode).

Great to see confirmation on some of the things that will be in work.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/Why-does-DOTA2-and-LOL-have-so-much-success/first

LoL had the necessary qualities and eventually gained the playerbase it deserved where as Guild Wars 2 had that playerbase in sPvP from the very beginning (betas), but has been decreasing in popularity (Mists is a ghost town compared to beta and launch)because it deserves it due to the lacking qualities of what an E Sport should have.

I don’t think it should be forced upon the players to find clever ways to try to have fun in PvP. That’s mostly fault with the developers.

And that’s why you fail. Nothing is being forced upon anyone. If you want to have fun in sPvP and that’s not happening utilizing the developer provided content, rather than incessantly whining day in and day out, wouldn’t it make more sense to try organize something to have fun? Isn’t that what this is all about?

If someone you live with turned on the TV in the room then left, and you don’t like the show that’s on, doesn’t it make more sense to go over and turn it off/change the channel instead of screaming at the top of your lungs how you don’t like what’s playing?

You can’t change the channel because there’s only one channel available.

You want people to create their own channel so they can experience something competitive?

I think most people will just turn the TV off.

I fail? What about the failing aspect of this game that was supposed to be E Sport material? Why should players who sought this aspect stick with GW2, which currently hasn’t delivered on this aspect? Rather than waiting patiently, many are leaving for other games that do have an E Sport material such as LoL. Then I guess there are players like you who want to hug and do community hosted event to wait until sPvP does become E Sport material. It helps. But it doesn’t solve the problem.

That’s why there’s us.

What do we do? We try to shoot the developers in the right direction. We remind the developers of GW greatest strength. We remind them what made GW1 great, primarily GvG and HA. We remind them of these missing elements. We want to see sPvP more on Twitch TV. We want GW2 to be great. We are the gadflies. That’s why we complain.

I say add a queue button for World vs World where the game starts when each team gets 100 players with a time limit of 4 hours. People can join to make up for if someone leaves. Not only would it fix problems where we have to queue in long lines in the heavily populated servers, but it prevents night raid junk from happening and it would be much more easily to upload a 4 hour game onto Twitch TV rather than a game that lasts 1 week.

Why does DOTA2 and LOL have so much success?

in PvP

Posted by: Phira.3970

Phira.3970

I disagree. I don’t have the facts but these are my speculations. Leagues of Legend didn’t have quite have the roar as Guild Wars 2 did from the beginning. However, LoL’s community even then slowly grew while currently GW2 sPvP community is slowly declining when compared to beta and launch. I believe this is because LoL had potential but just didn’t have the player base where as GW2 has the player base but not the potential. Wiki quote :

“League of Legends was born “when a couple of very active DotA community members believed that the gameplay was so much fun and so innovative that it represented the spawning of a new genre and deserved to be its own professional game with significantly enhanced features and around-game services.”

Note it says “a few.” Compare it to Guild Wars 2 which had a HUGE player/fan base from even before the betas and was one of the most anticipated games; yet, sPvP has been dying down when compared to the betas or launch. If I do a google search for “most anticipated game Leagues of Legend,” I don’t find any mention of it being popular before the game was released. I did hear small mentions of this game on the net but if my memory serves me right, it wasn’t a game that everyone talked about at school which leads to me believing had a small player base. Compare it to GW2 that just launched where in just about every single one of my classes, there is at least always someone who plays GW2. I even see people playing GW2 on their labtop before class.

I believe why LoL succeeded is because their game mode had potential and because it had potential, it ever so slowly eventually gained the player base it deserved.

So the question I believe is: Does conquest mode have potential to grow into E Sports? I say no. Why? I believe it’s because it doesn’t make sense. Not just for the players but for viewers (yes I’m talking about Twitch TV adaptability). If were watching a movie, in a battlefield, it’s strange to see characters running up to a point, camp it, and this point will then automatically generate magical points that determines who wins. Why would anybody want to watch this? A simple “destroy the enemy base” makes a lot more sense. For the record, Leagues of Legend has a conquest game mode too but its not nearly as popular nor is even of E Sport mention as when compared to the game mode in LoL where you destroy the enemies base. Conquest was more of a game mode for new or casual players. If pros ever did go to conquest, I believe it was just to test builds or to just get some fresh air from true competitive game type and stomp new players. I am elo 1960ish platinum player, and I go there just to test builds since money income is fast. So as far as potential, I’d say no. But yeah, works for casual players and is a good place to test builds.

I think if you guys are gonna focus on conquest mode, then you def need to keep pushing out great maps both visually and gameplay. I think maybe we can take conquest to a new creative level with future maps.

Argh the older maps are really visually bland IMO because of their rather bleak, depressing color schemes especially seen in Forest and Legend. I think the artists could go back in and repaint certain areas to give them more of a happy visual “pop.”

Temple of the Storm feels much “happier” than the other maps.

Many popular MOBA maps have a “happy” feel to them, which I think adds alot to enjoyability for both player and viewer. After all, we play games to feel good.

TLDR: No more depressing color schemes!

I don’t think depressing is the problem. Resident Evil was pretty depressing but highly popular. It’s just bland as you said. Then this might go into the psychology question of the difference of how we perceive bland and depressing and interesting.

But I don’t think we all play to feel ‘happy.’ I think a better term is excitement. Sometimes, we like to watch scary movies or go on roller coasters to scare ourselves which excites us. And maybe not just for excitement, but for a more romantic aspect. Night, which is a bit more gloomy, certainly is more romantic, right?

But its not to say that there isn’t also a correlation between depressing scenes and uninteresting scenes which has been present throughout Guild Wars cough Faction campaign. They were never able to quite get depressing, romance, and excitement quite right

I think one key aspect of getting the “right type of depressing scenes” would be a need of color contrast. World of Warcraft’s undead city used very dark colors but it still had lots of contrast and was colorful overall, full of life and a favorite city among many players.

I think some of the best examples of depressing design with contrasting color schemes is Final Fantasy. You could be in a depressing cave and it would still seem as lively as a metropolis because of the beautiful color contrast. Maybe the finest example would be Zanarkand ruins. It’s a ruin. It’s depressing. But the colors makes it romantic-looking.

The question: Why still “capture the point” objective? It’s such an unrealistic objective. Imagine a movie where winning in the battlefield meant people walking to some capture point, standing on it, and then somehow magically gaining points for victory (why would anyone want to watch this on Twitch TV?). This objective doesn’t make sense. Why not have something more meaningful like in GW1 where we kill the enemy guild lord or in Leagues of Legend – destroy the enemies base.

Looking at Leagues of Legend, LoL did implement a “capture the point” game style but it is much less popular and not even worthy of E Sports material when compared to the the “destroy the enemy base” objective. Why? Because destroying the enemies base makes sense. And in GW1, destroying the enemies guild lord makes sense. That’s probably one reason why it worked.

I believe GW2 can implement more meaningful objectives (without taking out the point capture system) by adding to the game another objective. I’m talking about a “two-way objective” game mode. There will be a primary objective which is the win factor and a sub-objective that helps support completion of the primary objective.

An example of a primary objective would be:
-One must get most kills (death match)
-Destroy/take over the enemy base (LoL uses this)
-Killing the enemy guild lord/commander, etc…. (GW1 GvG had this)

Then to build up necessary conditions to do the primary objective, there will be a secondary objective which is the current point capture system. However, each point capture grants something to aid in fulfilling the primary objective. Something such as +buff/hp regeneration, gaining arsenals/equipments/tools, gaining NPC aid, etc…. The key thing is that these sub-objective should provide almost an overwhelming advantage to winning the game which is why players will first want to fulfill these sub-objectives before tackling the main one. Then there can be sub-sub objectives such as doing short quests (similar to chieftain/svanir or world events similar in pve) that help in some way to capture the sub-objectives which in turn helps complete the primary objective.

Now isn’t that fractal? It’s sure how nature works! It is natural. In a movie, it is more realistic to think that the characters fight to “secure a point” not because it’ll magically generate points to victory, but it has some sort of territorial advantage or there was something there they had to pick up which is imperative to fulfilling their primary objective. Then there may be sub-sub objectives in the movie such as recruiting other characters (NPCs) that complete the sub-objective.

While this would make sPvP more interesting and more realistic, this double objective or even triple objective means that the games will last long. Perhaps 30 minutes or more and this is contradictory to the current tournament system. But I believe this is the KEY to having a strong E Sport aspect in the game.

Let’s look at the two examples where E Sport is/was a success again:

GW1 GvG lasted 20-40 minutes usually.
Leagues of Legends lasts 20-45 minutes usually.

Rather than having 3 short fights to win the tournament, it should be a single fight that lasts 20-45ish. It should be a fight that takes a lot of commitment and skills! This is what hardcore players want and its what makes E Sport an E sport.

I’m not saying to take out the entire tournament system. In fact, the current system is good for casual players. GW1 saw a problem where many casual or new players couldn’t participate in the more gorgeous Heroes Ascent or GvG game mode because they didn’t have the commitment or skills or the guild to compete in such a hardcore battlefield. These casual players or new players were then forced to just do Random Arena. But Random Arena was a bit “too uncompetitive.” It’s like the GW1 version for our current PvP where we can select a server and duke it out with pugs in a short simple game. It suits people who just want to do PvP for quick fresh air. Tournament is then a more competitive version of this that caters towards the more casual to more experienced players but not necessarily having the competitive component for the hardcore players. Well, GW2 is supposed to be a game for everyone right? Why leave the hardcore players out? Adding these tried and proven elements to the current PvP and changing it into a more challenging form of sPvP would certainly be appropriate for hardcore players. It certainly is a more “fractal” approach; and most certainly very E Sport material.

I suggest a PvP mode where we level up and purchase gear as the game progresses just like in LoL or Dota so that even though everyone has an equal chance of being that carry, we can still get that exciting carry climax.

Also more interesting elites that can really turn the tides of a game would help. If not, add an 11th spell and call it Uber Juber wattchamacall-it spell that can only be used once per game.
