Let’s be honest, the F2P in this game is nothing more than a glorified trial. I doubt it will change anything in PVP.
No, probably not.
Another bug to the list. Ranger’s must be the buggiest class right now, and I see no hope of anything being fixed until at least HoT. Then, who knows how many more druid will have.
I just want to get a few honest opinions on whether or not it’s worth it to max out/keep working on my ranger for PvP?
I feel like rangers are extremely useless and outclassed in every aspect in PvP. At first I figured I was just probably bad at PvP, but I tried sPvP with my level 31 warrior and dominated a few games without even knowing my build.
Has anyone had real success with rangers? Or should I move on to a different class? I really love rangers, but it’s just not fun being outclassed in every game.
If you go watch AG week 29 i think, there is a ranger on the team who wins the tourney. A necro from the abjured is helping with the play by play and they make jokes about the ranger being there but the dude rocks it out. He played great support with his range and took out the mesmer and then he was able to hold his own vs a d/d ele on a cap point. So if you play it right there should be nothing stopping you.
Good Luck
Yet this same team lost to abjured in a later ESL even when abjured had a sub that week. Hiro is a great player and I’m not saying Ranger is unviable, but it’s certainly suboptimal in this meta and that’s probably why we’ll never see it truly compete on the same level as ele or mesmer until things change for rangers.
… Reason i dont know them is because i dont play them…
Maybe take the time to learn the builds and classes you’re fighting instead of insta crying nerf. This whole post is simply a l2p issue.
Better for the game play? Probably. But whether this translates to more profit is, I’m sure, the real question. Remember, Anet is a company that needs to make profit to continue and dedicating a team solely for PvP balance could be a waste of resources if it doesn’t translate to a profit growth somehow.
Honestly, burning is fine and I highly doubt Anet will nerf it since it will destroy several builds in both PvE and PvP. Any mesmer running inspiration should have enough cleanse to deal with it and enough evades/stealth/invulns to avoid it.
These achievements were really fun to solo. I would only recommend ele for the point of no return solo because the trials are difficult to solo on ranger.
Just because nos played cele doesn’t mean its a top build. He spent more time watching a respawn timer count down than he did playing the game.
This was part of abjured’s plan to stall 2v1 and 3v1 fights and outrotate orng to avoid tage. When it came to 1v1s, nos was a beast in WTS and they were always forced to +1 him.
How are necros complaining right now? Cele signet necro is one of the best builds in pvp right now and and is easily the best 1v1 build in this meta.
That’s like saying thief is fine because nothing can replace SB #5.
I don’t understand this analogy. Are you implying that only one build is viable for necro? Because that’s certainly not true since I’ve seen many strong zerker necros, soldier necros and various Cele necros in PvP.
The fact is that Robert Gee did an incredibly good job in the necro revamp to the point of making it meta. Crying about the state of necros right now is selfish, especially when other classes such as ranger don’t even know what meta feels like.

I can only imagine how buggy revenant and heart of thorns is going to be with all of the new crap that’s coming. The bugs seem to just pile on and on..
Triple ele, lol. This should be evidence of how OP this class is in PvE.
Leagues will not be good unless they fix the matchmaking. 5 man pug vs 5 man premade matchups will ruin it all.
Only reason oRNG is slacking,is that their comp is just trash against Abjured. Abjured gets carried by duable ele. Just look at those 4v2 – eles still alvie after 2min – such balanced.
Abjured is the team which is favoured the most by the last balanced patch .Either your warrior has to fight an ele or an ele has to fight a nec. They are just in a huge disadvantage if you consider the comps.
Doesn’t matter if chaith and nos are down eles will carry 3v5Really? Because what I saw was oRNG not being able to keep up with the Abjured in the last 4 games. Their rotations weren’t that great, they kept being backcapped, while their thief didn’t bother to do so that often. They also barely cared about any of the buffs on temple. The reason why they lost is not the fact abjured had two d/d eles, but simply because they were not doing everything perfectly. On the other hand I felt so much determination from the Abjured regarldess of the class they play.
Also, so much for cheese build. From burn guard to rampage warrior and to mesmer. I win buttons won’t win you the game. I’m not in all means saying that oRNG played badly, not at all. The games were great, but they just didn’t manage to do what the Abjured did: having map dominance despite the fact they were dying and frankly they were dying quite a lot.
Also, magic toker is really the mvp.
Pretty easy to have map dominance when you need 2-3 people to kill a d/d ele.
Can someone please kindly explain to me how to get the season 2 episodes? I am a little bit confused. Do I need to finish my personal story first or season 1? Or do I need to buy the feature pack, except that it only has the first few episodes?
Id like to get some of the ascended sinister trinkets but I don’t how how to start the episodes.
Thank you!
Looks strong damage wise, but your only on demand condi clear is healing spring. How does this fare against all of the plague signet necros out there now?
I wonder if it makes more sense to trade vipers nest or SoS for a survival skill and then swap EB for WS?
It would be a good change if d/d ele did not have so much sustain. It requires a strong burst to down a d/d ele, so in general, this is a significant buff to that class.
It’s not just confounding suggestions that was the problem. It was also mender’s purity which essentially gave mesmers infinite condi clear and a healing skill that is realistically only on a 3s cool down.
Do we have an idea where condi ranger now sits compared to other classes? Is ele still #1 in DPS?
The mantra recharge was really too strong when combined with mender’s purity and confounding suggestions. I think their change was appropriate.
Previously, mesmers were basically immune to condis, had a 3s recharge on heal, and could stun someone every 5s. I don’t see how anyone can argue that those are balanced. Mantra’s will still be strong, just no longer OP.
I’m really glad they fixed some of our bugs, but now I just wonder how many new ones they have introduced with this patch. Also, a lot of important ones are still not addressed such as healing spring not healing our pet.
Is sinister really worth it as well? Can we achieve roughly the same amount of dps using rabid?
Your power damage is not completely nonexistent, so you get more out of that with the added power from sinister than you would from the extra cond dmg out of the utility buff (and the +100 cond, +10% duration buff is better anyway).
Yeah, I just don’t want to farm silver wastes if it’s not much more dps overall.
Is sinister really worth it as well? Can we achieve roughly the same amount of dps using rabid?
All of the nay sayers here need to try the condi build that Guang posted before disagreeing. I tried it last night with rabid and it’s crazy powerful, plus very very fun compared to the boring sword AA zerker meta.
Just give us access to the other pet skills and I really think ranger could become great again. As it stands, our only pet mechanic is a 1-2 second cast f2 skill with some RNG pet skills on top. This pales in comparison to any other class mechanic.
Conditions need time to do damage and they are so easily countered with condi cleanse. For this reason, it takes longer to win a fight as a condi build and they should have more access to toughness or vitality. I don’t think anything should change here. Power builds will always be better because the damage is direct and can only be mitigated, but cannot be undone instantly like conditions.
Please don’t use minions in a dungeon. Follow something like this:
http://www.dtguilds.com/mobile/forum/viewthread/m/6563292/id/12498059
Rampage does just as much damage as lich and it has CC, can stomp, and doesn’t remove stances… How can you even compare these two? Lich pales in comparison.
Update, still trying to get in the groove of Ele. Is it normal to be hard countered by Necromancers?
I have a hard time against Thieves, DPS Guardians and Mesmers BUT I always lose 1 v 1 against Necromancers.
I think only a mesmer counters an ele in this meta.
How do you 1v1 a Necro successfully as Ele?
I don’t play ele much but I would recommend saving your water attunement and cleansing fire for when they transfer your burning back. Also try and dodge dark path when they go into shroud since the chill will really hurt you. Otherwise, you should be able to out sustain their damage and your damage should be higher as long as you don’t get burned by your own condis. Necros only have 2-3 transfers so they shouldn’t be able to last very long under continued condi pressure.

This trait is a complete joke and is really strong proof that the devs spent no time on improving ranger in any way. Can the might stacks here even deliver a 10% damage increase?
Spider can actually do some decent physical damage. Probably as close as it gets.
The only people Anet devs communicate with are top ESL players. This is evident from this thread, https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/ranger/Fix-for-Taunt-coming-soon/first#post5250587, where the only dev post was of course to defend themselves.
+1
Really great written post. Like you, I also rerolled to elementalist for fractals because I was sick of groups that constantly only wanted thief/guard/ele/warr. Now fractals are easier than ever. I also rerolled to necro in PvP because we all know the problems of ranger there too..
I strongly believe all we need is direct access to our pet skills and the known bugs to be fixed. This will open up so many doors for rangers to become a great profession.
Devs…
You will find no answers here, unfortunately. The devs don’t visit this forum. As it stands this trait currently does absolutely nothing sadly.
I don’t think it removes a condition at the moment of activation anymore.
It removes a condition when it’s triggered. The old healing spring would remove a condition before applying the heal, so I could use it even while poisoned without worrying about not receiving the full benefit of the heal.
The current healing spring blows, but it’s still better than our other options.
A traited TU is far superior to healing spring. The only reason to take healing spring is if you didn’t go into wilderness survival in my opinion. However, after they recently broke it there is no reason at all to take it now.
It’s also funny how the devs kept saying how they wanted to improve spirits and ended up making them even more useless than shouts. Do we even have a dedicated ranger Dev? Give us Robert Gee please, necros and mesmers are so good now.
@jcbroe:
What you have said about the inability to implement ideas goes for pretty much any business or company. Having said that, I do not think that it can apply in this scenario however.
As we have seen, A-net is not adverse to making rather big changes as far as specialization and balance changes go. Mesmer, Engineer, Guardian, Necromancer and even Elementalist changes can be called anything but conservative. However, in the case of Ranger they just did not bother.
I am of the opinion that in the case of Ranger something else is afoot. It is not a conspiracy or anything like that, it is just that no one really wants to bother fixing something that can not be fixed. And many things that really could be fixed are brushed off by the standard it is not in our design philosophy for class XYZ, and in this case Ranger
Prime examples:
We need more F abilities to better control the pet – Said it was to complicated for new players, but with the latest patch Thieves and Engineers got another F button. Mesmers will get a new one with the Chronomancer
Permanent stow – Said that the pet was meant to always be out even if it completely ruins the experience for an entire team, ex. skipping in TA and pets activating blossoms. Just having the ability to force stow it even if its at a damage loss for the ranger would go a long way in increasing the reliability of the mechanic.
Single target sustained damage – Anyone remember this golden sentence? How Ranger is designed to be a sustained single target damage class? In a game that absolutely does not support it, with very poor innate defenses and zero bunker busting capacity or boon removal.
Ranger + pet = total other class damage – Damage tied to an AI that even got nerfed a while back for doing too much damage, even though it simply can not hit moving targets.
Think of the whole situation like this, it has fallen to the Ranger to be that one piece of the game that no one actually bothers with. It is sad for us Ranger players but it is what it is.
I think this post perfectly sums up all of the ranger problems right now. 10/10.
I know there were balance issues with underwater combat, that lead to the removal of Rain on Capricorn. I understand the priority has to be put into the majority of the game which is Land based combat, but I would love to see underwater PvP return in the future, even if it is out of balance it would be so nice to have Raid on Capricorn
or even a 100 % underwater arena map with vertical point nodes for Unranked play, or at the very least bring back Capricorn for private arena’s. It was one of my favorites. To me Saying underwater combat was out of balance is like saying Terrormancers should not be allowed to play the Skyhammer map.
No thanks.
You will regret picking ranger.
This.
Forcing us to sit in heart of the mists will actually encourage people to afk/do something else while they wait for queue pops. I’m pretty sure this is having exactly the opposite of the intended effect. Plus, with these unreasonable queue times (5-11 min), I spend almost more time afk in HoTM than actually in game.
I will never understand why people take guard when you can get the same effect using heal as one and free up a utility slot.
Yeah, it’s a terrible game mode that is incredibly boring. They should have done something similar to warsong gulch instead.
No those were the skills in order from the combatlog. If they have other skills that can hit that hard, then that seems pretty over the top.
that’s what the warrior’s elite skill rampage feels like when they run full dps. he doesn’t hit as hard out of rampage, but it’s close. 100b will be doing 10k+ etc. the elite is very telegraphed and the warrior has both a noticeable (and interruptible) animation when they transform and for the duration of the transformation. however the whole form is melee apart from one ranged attack (that is super telegraphed), so if you dodge the gap closers you can kite the form with ease.
i assume you are running something squishy yourself. currently damage is very high and eating combos from dps builds will get you killed very fast. either change your build or use your dodges better.
in regard to rampage, if im on engi ill moa it, stealth, invun, dodge, leap away, stack 9 burning (lol), or just dodge. on warrior ill block and kite, or counter rampage a teamate to even the fight.
You cannot interrupt rampage because of pulsing stab. Most of the time you cannot outrun rampage and you can only dodge 2 skills until the next one CC’s you. Eventually they will get their quickness proc and you will be permanently stunned. Basically if you’re a class without several invulns or blinks/ports, you have no counter play.
These are all good suggestions but I honestly just wish we had access to more pet skills, that’s all. Engi got an extra f5 skill this patch, thief got an extra f2, and we are overlooked. There is no reason we should not have this. Realistically, our only profession mechanic is a 1-2 second cast time f2 skill while every other class has something really class defining and useful.
Was the healing power thing maybe… a mistake? It’s just SO out of place.
The only place it kind of fits is in a celestial setup. Unfortunately, I really don’t know how to make celestial work well on ranger. Might stacking is not easy to do like an ele or engi, our power weapons hit like a wet noodle without zerker amulet and our condi weapons do almost no power damage at all. Maybe the remorseless cavalier build is the only build that can use this minor. For everyone else it literally adds 0 value.
Must have been your imagination because no ranger can almost kill you in a few seconds with melee. 3k maul is our best melee spike.
