If they made asura warriors just a little more squishy than norn and charr, it would seriously affect those having or wanting an asura warrior, given that a 0.0000000000000001% is enough to make people scream inefficient and never allow it on their teams in dungeons or such.

A buff to a specific race will either be too small to matter as a buff, or large enough to severely impact the race/class combination ratios.

It is impossible to have a difference between races that gives a benefit to some combinations without discouraging the other combinations.

The respective pages for daily and monthly achievement categories come with a timer, so you know when the month ends.

I feel this timer would be infinitely more useful for the living story achievement categories.
We all know when October ends, but there is a lot of confusion (and research outside of the game required) about when the current living story meta achievement will be removed.

Clockheart Boss Fight

Ugh. There is a lot here that made this fight not fun. I’m not saying make it easier, but make it more consistent/reliable. Secondly, less is more. There were too many mechanics mixed together here; a simpler fight would have sufficed.

For example, why kill all the holo projectors before the actual fight – it takes time and doesn’t add anything new to the fight. It feels like this was designed to just drag it out. Besides, what was that even good for if later in the fight we NEED holograms to take down the boss’ shield?

I don’t mind knockback as an effect that you can recover from, but getting knocked back 5 times in a row, into the middle platform, just takes you out of the fight completely. (As you can’t even be revived in there.)

The first wave of cogwheels felt “unfair” as no player made the decision to move out of melee range, it is simply where you are forced to start the fight.

Then sometimes the floor electrified and sometimes it didn’t. We tried to work out a pattern (i.e. when the Clockheart’s armour came on) but it was inconsistent. The hologram required to take down the shield sometimes spawned in an electrified sector, outside of some characters’ pull ranges.

The issues with holo projectors and rubberbanding have been pointed out repeatedly already.

Suggested changes:

  • Ditch the holo projectors altogether.
  • If you don’t want players to stand in the middle platform, seal it off with a barrier rather than electrifying it. This way players would not have access, but wouldn’t get tossed in by the clockheart either.
  • Spawn the boss closer to the door, or have him not throw the initial batch of cogwheels.
  • Stop it already with the chains of knockbacks that take players out of the fight.
  • Spawn holograms inside pull range.

Aftermath

The lionguard coming through the ceiling was completely kitten and probably my favourite part about this dungeon path.

Secret Room

Love, love, love the concept of following Caith to Scarlet’s secret office. Love the suggestion box spawning another critter. Love the extra achievements.

Didn’t love how we were baited (along with Caithe) to go into that room and then nothing was revealed. It just… ended in the middle of it. Or maybe I missed it because I was hurried out of the room to get some of the other achievements?

Suggested changes: This scene deserved a cutscene. And some sort of “proper” conclusion.

Additional Achievements

I am really happy about these achievements being permanent / separate from the living story meta-achievement. So these can be done whenever later, without the pressure that for instance the Aetherblade Retreat put on us. You did this already with the Tequatle update. It’s great, please keep it this way!

The achievements themselves I think are fine… Other than that I think the double-ooze-synchronisation should have been one.
Not sure what the point of the Aether chests is since they don’t contain anything of value and it seems like they were put in simply to have an excuse to have something drop in PvE that generates attention towards the dungeon path. (Fair enough, but, meh.)

Summary

Slightly less fun than MF, felt “too long”, some parts put PUGs’ patience to the test too much, resulting in 3-4 hour runs. Less would have been more.
Good story, fun achievements.

Minor changes would have made this a fantastic and fun dungeon path with high replay value.

I ran Twilight Assault a few times – there were easy runs and difficult runs, fun and no-fun ones. For reference: I ran the Molten Facility 2 – 3 times a day. I ran Aetherpath 3 times in total so far.

I think that Twilight Assault could have been great with just some minor changes, which I am going to list below.
____________________________________

Interior Design

I really liked it. It has its own identity with the TA/Aetherblade style mix, but still feels like a part of Twilight Arbor.

Caithe

I liked the premise as well. Scarlet is baiting Caithe? Fair enoug. I’ve always liked Caithe and I’m happy to experience more story elements together with her. But after the initial enthusiasm came a bit of disappointment. Caithe is merely a voice from the off for most of the dungeon run. Apparently she’s doing some other important stuff, only showing up to tell the players what to do, but not helping in the actual fights at all. Eh.

Ooze Room

I appreciate the idea to put some puzzles into dungeons that aren’t combat-based. This one requires players to take auto-attack off, not use their aoe and remember the control skills, and that’s something I can get behind. That being said, for many PUGs this is an obstacle that just can’t be overcome within some players’ attention span.

Suggested tweak: The principle would have been the same with the two side of the door unlocked individually, without players having to time their two oozes, and made it easier for PUGs to go through.
Getting both oozes to the door at the same time would have been a great idea for an achievement, so people would be motivated to work on their teamwork, communication and syncrhonisation without it being a showstopper for (many) PUGs.

Sparki and Slick

This feels like a mid-boss fight. Sparki and Slick complement each other in a very similar way that the Berserker and the Dregd did at the end of MF. It worked for the MF and it works here. My main beef is that there is another mid-boss (foreman fight) that is more interesting. Sparki and Slick felt (to me) less connected to the dungeon, too. The oil-munching ooze was a nice touch, but ultimately the dungeon felt very long to the people I ran with and this part would have been the easiest to cut (or least sad to miss).

Suggested tweak: Remove the fight altogether and use the ooze-oil mechanic in a different dungeon path.

Destroying Hologram Generators

The mechanics are okay, and they’re supposed to prepare you for the end-boss. I accept that.
Story-wise, though, you shouldn’t have used the word hologram. Maybe should have used golems or something other that can actually explode (because, like, it doesn’t consist of pure light). When you think about what a hologram actually is, then destroying the generator IS destroying the hologram, not the other way round. And to create machinery that can be destroyed the easiest by the very thing it produces makes no sense at all.

Suggested tweak: Keep the mechanics, but use power generators & steam creatures or something instead of holograms.

Foreman Spur and his Aerobics Class

I liked this. I also like the idea of the extra achievement, although my group failed to get it (so far).
Sadly, the workers aren’t working on airships at all. If anything, it looks like a corporate yoga event.
Secondly, this room had the potential to be almost as awesome as the MF’s test chamber or the speech in SE story mode, if written with a little more humour.
The foreman fight itself was fine.
The achievement is fine.

Suggested tweaks: I realise that you needed to work with the existing animations, but you could’ve given them workbenches or something.
Secondly, adding humour to Spur’s lines both towards the workers, and later the players.

Disco Floor Room

Here’s a room that I love the idea of. It reminded me a lot of the platformers I used to play.
I’m not really sure how the holo-thing works though. Is the hologram supposed to de-spawn when you hit the floor? Because we don’t always have people in our group that have the range to aggro it from the platforms which makes the whole thing a bit of a mess.

Suggested tweak: Make the changes to the floor a little slower. Make sure the holo can be pulled by all classes, even if not traited for additional range.

Pixelpumpkin.4608

That’s a tough one to solve. You can only equip one of any given ascended accessory, which is why they say “Unique” in their stat block. That’s not really explained anywhere, however, which is a terrible oversight in the system. You’re not the first person to do this, and you won’t be the last.

This happens all the time (going by forum posts); if that isn’t evidence of the word “unique” not being clear enough then I don’t know.

And especially with earrings… most people use identical earrings in both ears, right?

A system that allows you to buy things that you cannot use (see also: “soulbound on acquire” armour of the wrong armour type) is badly designed. It’s always better to not allow invalid input by the user in the first place, rather than allowing any input and then only validating it afterwards.

Anyway, yeah, your best (only) chance would be to open a support ticket for a refund.

Bag Space and Bank Space

Pixelpumpkin.4608

My thinking is that if I can sell it to another player via the TP then I can also buy it from the TP. So unless I’m certain I want to use it I don’t hang on to it. I can always get another one later.

This ^

Prices on the TP are fairly stable.

Holding on to items is really only worth it if

  • they cannot be replaced (account bound, soulbound, special event rewards)
  • they are difficult to replace (crafted ascended skin)
  • they are expensive to replace (skin bought with gems/real money)
  • they are very rare, so the price may go up later
  • you know you’re going to use it in the immediate future

Everything that can be replaced later goes on the TP… the bank fills up fast enough with living story rewards and such.

I don't "get" cultural armor

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

I understand cultural armour as a combination of the following:

  • Slightly better-than-average skins
(Better than average: tail support for Charr, etc.)
  • Collectible items, for achievement points
  • They’re expensive, so you don’t want to destroy them even if you only buy them to complete your achievements. Then they take up inventory slots, thus motivating the player to buy bank or bag slots.*
  • They’re locked to arbitrary stat combos AND the highest rarity is “yellow”, thus motivating the player to buy transmutation crystals.*

*To be honest, I think that is fair enough. They have to make money in some way, after all.

I would prefer if they were just skins. They’d still take up inventory space, but not require transmutation crystals to use at level 80.

Also, while many of the skins don’t benefit my characters at all (for example, I like the human T3 heavy armour, but my human engi wears medium), AND I’m kind of cranky that they’re cultural (as some of them would be super nice to use on my characters of other races), I think they’re overall well designed.

In-game survey (mockups included)

Pixelpumpkin.4608

I do think surveys should also be account age sensitive. Ie until you have played x hours it doesn’t let you know there is an active survey you can answer.

No sense asking someone to give feedback on the game who has barely walked in the door. It would be like a radiant asking you to rate your meal after only the appetizers

These surveys would only unlock themselves after a player has taken part in some sort of experience.

For instance, you’ve run a specific dungeon path for the first time. A survey for that dungeon path would be unlocked. I don’t think it matters much whether you are an old player or new, you’ll have a valid opinion on the experience. It would certainly be possible though for the form to return the account age togther with the answers, should ANet want to include that information in their statistical evaluation.

Pixelpumpkin.4608

Taking a few ideas mentioned here, and some of my own, I have mocked up an idea of how in-game surveys could work.

1. Login Screen

(See first and second image below)

- When players log in for the first time after the survey goes live, they are presented with a prompt that asks them to choose whether they would like to participate in the survey or not.

- If players choose not to participate, they are shown a prompt that explains that they can turn on the survey in settings.

2. In-game survey

(See last two images)

- Once a player has opted into the online survey a new icon shows up on the menu bar.

- When a player completes an event that has a survey attached to it, they will be prompted with an alert icon (similar to when new mail comes), so they can see they have a new survey to fill out.

This could also be accompanied by a carrier pigeon, or some other animal.

- When players have time, they can open the survey panel and fill out the surveys they’re interested in (or skip the ones they’re not).

- Surveys are only displayed once, and once they’ve been submitted they disappear from the list, unless they’re updated and require a new survey (Eg. Tequatl)

Guardian or warrior commander?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

To offer another perspective:

I don’t think the commander tag and the class or build you play have anything to do with each other. When you lead, you do so because you say stuff in chat. All classes need to work together as a team using the game mechanics – if everyone stacks on a boss, does it really matter whether it was the warrior or ranger or necro who said “everyone stack on me”?

I assume people go for the commander tag on their heavy armour character more often because it “feels natural” and they feel the commander is commandrisher when looking like a knight.

That’s my experience anyway (which is limited to PvE – it might be different in WvW).

Grounded Achievement = Bad design

I did the shaman fractal on level 1 and did not stop the entire time. I got the achievement. Others have gotten it as well. I suggest recording your attempt on video and reviewing it. It takes only one tick of damage to fail the achievement.

I’m not saying that it is impossible to get, only inconsistent (or the mechanics are badly communicated by ANet, which really isn’t any better). The fact that you or other people got it doesn’t change that. I got it, too, in the end, but before that I did a whole bunch of runs where I swear I never once stepped in the lava, nor got close to any lava pools even without lava in it, and didn’t get it.

We assume (not that it says this anywhere – not in game, not in the wiki…) that no part of the game you control may touch the lava, including pets (sucks for rangers) and turrets, which may have been the problem in my case as I tend to drop a supply crate in boss fights. If you don’t play a ranger or engi then maybe you didn’t have those problems, but that doesn’t mean that those problems don’t exist.

That being said, I’m not aware of any extensive testing that supports this, so it might just as well have been random.

You also DO NOT get it if you just sit there waiting for people to run the orbs. You must run the orbs to get it. This is why a lot of people think it’s bugged since they didn’t think they had to run the orbs. At least this is the case for those I helped.

This is definitely false on both accounts. I myself (and friends I play fractals with) have done runs without triggering any traps and not gotten the achievement (and it is pretty impossible to trigger a trap and not notice), and then some of us got it without carrying wisps, by taking turns sitting it out.
(There’s also the issue of some players getting this achievement at the start of the fractal, before any wisps action. How does that fit into your pattern?)

With other achievements definitely having been bugged from the start (uhm, the combos one, the hints completion one…) and others randomly breaking (the crab toss ones, Kiel dailies, Hop, Skip, and Jump etc.) I think it is entirely justified to suspect that achievements may be broken rather than the players just being too stupid to understand them.

It’s not bad design when it can be done by everyone without the use of portals and invulnerability skills. Just learn the patterns and yo can do it without getting hit by the electricity. It’s an achievement that takes a little thought and critical thinking which is why so many people struggle.

It is badly designed if it encourages players to get it by not playing. Of course it can be achieved through clever hopping and manual dexterity, but it is a lot easier to achieve by sitting it out. That is a definite design flaw.

Whaaaaaaat? Since when being a kitten is the fault of someone else? I am so tired of the gaming community…

Since similar achievements are known to be bugged (whether or not they’re awarded is pretty inconsistent, even when you think you know exactly what to do), yes, I think part of the blame IS upon the game. (See also: “The Floor Is Lava. Don’t Step In It”, “Fancy Footwork”)

This achievement is not known to be bugged.

Honestly? If you team up even with ONE other player, it will instantly be twice as easy on ANY profession. It takes the pressure off you and allows you to fous on trying out things rather than just staying alive.

I would advise to stick with a class that “feels right” (for me it was engineer) and to make a few friends in the game or team up with someone from /map.

I can’t say for sure, but I feel this may be a server issue.

There are some servers out there that just don’t have an amazing community. I’m on Tarnished Coast and for the most part it is quite good. I believe this is due to the fact it was kinda branded as the unofficial role play server on day one.

So, my advice is to guest around a bit and test out some other severs. Have a list of test things you would like to say, and see what reaction you get when you ask them a few times in different areas.

As for the boss fights…well, that can be rough. Dead areas are very frustrating in any MMO. Again, I would suggest guesting to higher population servers and seeing if you have better luck.

And, finally….feel free to look me or my girlfriend (pixelpumpkin) up on TC, we love meeting new, and cool players that wanna do stuff.

I came here to say exactly those same things, boyfriend beat me to it.

If you’re on a North American server (or willing to migrate to one), get in touch.

The quality of /map chat is noticeably higher on TC than overflows. (I can’t speak for any other servers, I’m sure there’s other great communities out there though.)

Dungeon runs can be amazingly fun if players communicate with each other, or the dumbest experience ever if players don’t…

I’m bitter
because I never got to experience this path. It was on my to do list (with the rest of the dungeon paths) but it just so happens that I hadn’t done this one, so I … just missed out.

I’m disappointed
because ANet didn’t give us advance notice. I would have made time for this (if at all possible) HAD I KNOWN that they were going to remove it.

I’m stressing out
because what this means is that even permanent content is temporary. While this is not a problem in itself, it is a problem if not announced beforehand. It is stressful enough to try and do all living story content before it goes away, I don’t need the additional stress of completing everything else in the game, knowing that it might be removed without notice.

This pretty much sums up all I have to say here.

Name Expiration

in Suggestions

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

One way to solve this issue is to try to come up with original and personal names for the characters, instead of “common” one.

I have yet to find a single name on any of my character (last created quite recently) that wasn’t free.

I agree.

Every single name on the “Gaelic baby names” website is used up? Be creative and find something of your own. It could be more awesome.

I’ve had no problem so far creating unique characters with unique names.

I am not 100% happy with how character names are handled in GW2 either: I think

  • the name field should be longer
  • capitalization shouldn’t be enforced (thinking of my good friend Mcallister here which looks 100 times dumber than McAllister would have)
  • allow for apostrophes and hyphens (you may think that apostrophes, aside from RL examples like O’Brien or d’Agestino, would make many players take on really dumb fantasy names only consisting of apostrophes and the letter y, but it cannot possibly be worse than all the “Jóhñ ?mìth” type of names we already have in game now)
    _________________________________________

However, as long as these restrictions are in place, we can still easily come up with unique character names. Here’s some practical advice:

Humans

If your desired name is taken, give them a middle name or middle initial. “John Smith” may be taken, but “John N Smith”, “John Sterling Smith” or “John Smiths” may not be.

Charr

If you want to name your Charr according to Charr lore, your name will consist of 3 different parts, so it will be very, very easy to find a combination that hasn’t been done before, even IF you have your mind absolutely set on the first name or warband.

“Zeera Cinderwind” may be taken. “Zeera Ashenwind”, “Zeera Cinderstorm”, or “Veera Cinderwind” probably won’t be.

Norn

Even if you follow the pattern and create a norn with a real-life Nordic first name, you can take some creative freedom with the spelling. Secondly, as norn like to boast about their life achievements, how about a last name that reflects that?

If your first choice “Olaf Kegbrawler” is taken, how about “Olav Kegbrawler”, “Olaf The Kegbrawler”, “Olaf Barrelbrawler”, “Olaf Keghurler”?

Asura

Naming asuras can be the most or the least difficult to do, depending on your willingness to go with a title.

Strategy number one: randomly double a consonant.

If “Klicks” is taken, try “Klikks”, “Klixx”, “Gliccs” etc.

Strategy number two: since asuras typically have short names, they can “afford” (in terms of maximum letters) a title. That opens up hundreds of more combinations and also gives the character some nice “flavour”.

Is your new character “Genius Klicks”, “Master”, “Prodigy”, “Stipendiary”, “Advocate”, “Agent” or “Scholar”? I haven’t even gone into the titles that are used in game already such as “Peacemaker”.
I really wanted “Glitch” for my asura warrior because she is such a klutz, so I went with “Apprentice Glitch” and I’m quite happy with it.

Sylvari

I don’t think the Gaelic connection is particularly relevant here because nobody understands a word of Gaelic anyway, so you might just as well make something up that mimics the general “soundscape” of existing sylvari names. (Also, I’m not convinced that that is a general rule anyway: Pretty sure that NPC Leurent is pronounced in French.) If you feel particularly uncreative, use an existing name (NPC or whatever) and just change one or several letters to similar ones.

For example, you like the name “Gamarien”, there’s “Camarien”, “Garmarien”, “Gamarian”, “Galarien”, “Gavarion” and any combination or variant of those. Now Gamarien is a pretty high-profile NPC so people may already have done many of these variations and finding the one that works for you may be a bit annoying, but if you pick a less prominent NPC I predict that you won’t have any problems with this approach.

And also…

And my last bit of advice is: If you don’t feel particularly creative yourself, discuss your new character’s background, concept and personality here on the race subforums – other people may have awesome ideas.
_________________________________________

TL;DR: many people here on the forums will help you out finding names. If your first choice is taken, try variations. Think inside the Lore but allow yourself to be creative. I believe that this will solve the naming problem for you.

The only way this will be solved is if ANet:

A. Switches the focus from shinies to fun
B. Makes the end result more rewarding than the farming.

Hits the nail on the head.

Solution is simple. Award champ boxes at event completion. Game already keeps track of the number of kills to award bronze/silver/gold so keep track of how many champions player killed and if event is completed successfully award that many champion boxes. If event fails award the usual fail reward.

Simple and elegant, I like it.

But I do think that A) is the bigger issue than B).

Get one volunteer to activate the electric panels and have everyone else make a mad-dash for the previous panels during the ~2 second down time when floors reset

^This.
Whenever a platform is stepped on, the electricity goes off for about two or three seconds, which is more than enough to allow people to get onto it. If their response-time is really that bad, maybe they don’t deserve the achievement (That’s why they’re called achievements, after all).

So basically, have one guy carry the rest so they can get their ‘personal achievement’ the easy way? Surely you see the contradiction in that.

Yes, this means that the design of the achievement is flawed. Some of the fractals achievements have the same problem.

However, if you have a group that runs dungeons together on a regular basis, taking turns is not the end of the world. We ended up doing that in some of the fractals. For example the grawl fractal: after quite a few runs where we took great care to not step in the lava pools, some of us still hadn’t got it, not knowing whether it was bugged or not. (I am now thinking that my supply crate’s turrets counted as “stepping” in the lava, which is super lame) so in the end we just ran it a few times with 1-2 people hanging back each time. In the swamp, only 3 people carry orbs anyway so there, too, it is easy to takes turns hanging back. After a bunch of honest tries that failed for no reason that we could see, I think that is legitimate.

So I don’t see a problem getting this floor achievement eventually as long as I keep playing with my regular bunch of friends, but I agree that an achievement that players essentially get (or get more easily) if they don’t play is badly designed.

I don’t know if I’m the only one or what, but I haven’t had problems finding names. Especially in the case of asura as there is so many fun titles that mean that you can basically take ANY name. And if that doesn’t work, double a consonant somewhere. My latest asura was Apprentice Glitch.

Only once my first choice for a sylvari was taken and that was something very specific.

TA Aetherpath awards 2 ach. instead of 1

I started out with 1/4 possible TA dungeon paths completed (I had only ever done the story mode). Did the Aetherpath, and afterwards the counter was at 3/4. (Then I did up/up and got 4/4.)

I never stepped foot in forward/forward or forward/up (when it was available), so clearly my counter should not be at 4/4.

The same happened to two friends of mine who I ran the dungeon with and who hadn’t done any explorable paths yet either.

I assume that the Aetherpath counts BOTH for forward/up and additionally for itself.

there’s been no reply yet to my requests for feedback about why the old Tequatl Megalaser achievement is no longer completable despite it still being the same functional mechanic

Really? Extra-lame.

I mean, I’ve already got that achievement, so I guess I lucked out on that account.

I heard the same from some of my best in-game friends last night.

I hadn’t done that particular path yet, and now I know I never will.

I WAS going for completion. I did believe though that with the existing permanent content (especially the content linked to permanent achievements), it was safe to wait until I had some free time.

Kitten me, right?

Thanks, ANet.

To elaborate a little more on why this is so disheartening for me.

  1. As if the living story achievements didn’t put enough pressure on me, now I learn that the permanent content can be taken away at a moment’s notice, so not wanting to miss out, I am now under the additional pressure to complete all dungeon paths, all jumping puzzles and whatever else as soon as possible, leaving nothing to be explored at my own pace (which is what I loved (past tense) most about Guild Wars 2).
  2. I am actually fine with the Living World concept making permanent changes to the world. Things change, they evolve. I have always been a supporter of the Living World. But please consider giving us some advance warning (more than a single day) to give us the chance to catch up before taking content away. I think this is not unreasonable.

Thank you.

This is also exactly what I feel like.

Does anybody know if people are now missing the possibility to complete any achievements or so? Or getting a special item from any of the NPCs in the path that was replaced?

It only adds achievements, doesn’t remove any. He specifically said in the stream that as far as the dungeon master achievement and paths achievement, the new paths replaces the old one, meaning if you did the old one you’ll still have that achievement, and if you didn’t but do this one, you’ll get that achievement. There were no special items from the path being replaced, but there are in what’s being added.

Yeah but that’s not my concern here. I’m just sad that there is one part of the story that I will never get to see.

I created a google spreadsheet early on for content that was difficult to track with just achievement or that is not tied to any, and it contains (among other things) dungeon paths.

So, achievement or not, I miss out on stuff. If I had gotten advanced notice, I would have done that particular dungeon path so I could take it off my list. Now it’ll remain in there forever.

I am a Scarlet Fan…

But I completely agree with OP, she doesn’t belong in fractals.

I’m the other way round: I don’t like Scarlet much, but I would have no problem with her being the reason the reactor blew.

I just want some sort of continuity, I don’t care much whether it was planned from the beginning or is shoehorned in later.

When that happens I just have a dedicated slot in my inventory and pile them up. When the next chapter starts: destroy stack.

Works like a charm.
