Soraya Mayhew – Thief
Melissa Koris – Engie – SF for Life!
This latest feature is horrifically underwhelming.
If i want to go out and collect things I’ll play Pokemon or some other game about collecting things. This nonsense isn’t for veteran players unless you really enjoy re-crafting armor skins and re mapping zones you might have already mapped on your main and a few alts. All so you can get a shiny badge no one else sees/knows about and occasionally a back item skin you might not ever use.
OH BOY! As a veteran player I get to recreate all of those armor skins i made over a year ago just to get it in a collection?!? Thank you so much Anet for giving something for us veteran players to do…again. For nothing. For absolutely nothing. Really. Its great. Amazing and engaging content. Yup.
O_o
Was I too light on the sarcasm? I hope not. Though I’d love to know how any of yesterday and today’s updates were “things for the veteran players” since once again, this more benefits people just now exploring the whole world for the first time and crafting for the first time and ultimately this is absolute DRIVEL for veteran players.
OK, so, as others have stated over and over, the first change that HAS to come is that if you’ve unlocked the traits, then they should be unlocked account wide. I don’t make alts to travel throughout all of tyria again unless I have a specific need to, like get more items for legendaries (which I have no interest in obtaining).
Now, for specifics -
All traits that require dungeons should be changed. Getting PUGs together for those before was a nightmare and that was if you just happened to not have a desired build. Now low level players will DEFINITELY not have a “proper” build and just won’t be able to get them without paying for them.
All tooltips need to be clear about what you have to do to get the trait. Period.
Those are the only “quick” updates i think can be made in a respectable time frame while more meaningful changes are implemented. Also overall cost of buying the traits needs to be lowered. The cost is just too high right now for new players and many veterans that don’t get much time to play.
I can’t comment too extensively now, but just something I experienced the other day on my test alt:
One of my traits was to defeat an NPC (I’m guessing of note) out in Gredgehaunt. The problem is, the “tooltip” was horrifically vague and just told me that the enemy was somewhere near <insert waypoint here>. Aside from not frequenting this area since I first made my original toon and not being very familiar with it, I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be for a brand new player to go hunting for this trait and needing to go look up the information online just so they know who to go to or where to go just to get this one ADEPT level trait. Its nonsense. I will come back later when I have some more time with more specific info about this, and although grateful that someone has been actively responding, I am getting the distinct impression that movement on this will be slower than syrup in winter. *(Would have used the proper term but worried it would have been filtered into molkitten)
Regina: Please excuse me if i reserve and potential praise for the coming news until I actually read the coming news. As of right now these updates are leaving a fairly bad taste in my mouth, and seemingly in the mouths of many other veteran players that are feeling ignored.
its more disconcerting that when reading between the lines and jargon what they are essentially saying is: We are altering the leveling up system and the Personal Story system to drag it out a little more and essentially repackaging the new player experience without actually changing much outside of rewarding new players more for getting through the PS and hoping they like it more while staying engaged in it for longer. This makes me think that either new players will love it, or hate it and that their metrics tell them it is a 60/40 split which could translate into bigger gem gains in the long term from these new players. Vet players should basically be happy they’ve gotten to play the game they’ve played.
Me thinks traits are staying put as is since this is more an issue with vet players and my guess is Anet will only tweak them based on their potential new player feedback.
As of right now, and in part thanks to a post made by an Anet staffer over in the Facebook community to another person, I really feel like it is almost a joke with regard to veteran players over at Anet. One post in particular was immediately removed by them where they essentially told a veteran player upset by the content directed at new players that “it’s probably good you’re not a new player then”. Its a little disconcerting that they’d be so flip about a legitimate concern from someone who has played this game, stuck with it and doesn’t want to feel marginalized, yet all it seems like is that Anet cares more about dolling up the product for new and unfamiliar players. There is nothing about this new info today that seems appealing to me, or encourages me to even make a new alt, which saddens me as well.
Given the direction of this latest info from the news page, I am having bigger doubts regarding any changes to the trait system.
Anet. Seriously. I was with GW1 for over 6 years. Please don’t make me jump from GW2 in just over 2.
i get it Anet. New players. New players. New players. New players means people that don’t know better and who might be swayed by the same thing being presented differently. That’s like saying, we know you don’t like eating durian, so instead, we’ve cut it up and put a sprig of parsley on the plate so those new customers can try it that way instead. At the end of the day its still durian and people aren’t going to want to eat it, let alone older customers returning to see if something has changed. I actually LIKED having to open the weapon skills individually. It forced me to learn how the skills worked and how they worked with each other. Maybe for vet players this is a good thing, but for new players? nah. And please, please, please don’t mention traits in an update like this unless you are actually talking about changes/fixes to the trait system.
“We’ve also taken some of the systems that felt needlessly complicated or obtuse and simplified them to make them consistent, so leveling is the big way you gain new abilities. Our last feature pack also changed traits to no longer require going to a merchant and buying a book at each tier to unlock them; you unlock a tier for free as soon as you reach the appropriate level. "
I keep reading this part does this mean traits will be unlocked when you level now or do we still have to do the chores.
You’re still doing chores. They were just restating what they did regarding traits 5 months ago for some unknown reason.
I was thinking about the b-day prezzies and how they give us more “jump to level 20” scrolls (although they don’t stack with older ones). I was remembering back to how it was a fairly neat thing for people making alts who didn’t want to slog through those early levels, but not be made too over powered too early.
And now they are frankly pointless. The only benefit to getting that level 20 bump is that i can get a few utilities and all my weapons skills unlocked faster. yay? This is one of the problems with changes like this to the trait system while keeping things like these level scrolls in the game in some way. They don’t hold the same meaning to the player since the payoff to using them is nil.
I think the best way to illustrate what the last few posters have said, and a possible fix would be not to show us the really nice car that we can have someday, but show it to is from behind a glass and a moat. In essence, at level 30 we get all of the wizz-bang LOOK YOU CAN HAS TRAITS, and then no…not really. maybe later. After you do A LOT of stuff. And the traits that you can get easily are more like the Pinto sitting next to the real nice car.
I wish there was something more I could say on the alt leveling experience, but I’ve had to take a small break from that to deal with some WvW stuff and life stuff. I will say though that being where I’m at with my necro, I feel like I should either try to press hard to level 80 or start the trait hunt now and see how feasible it actually is to do (solo-ish). Basically I won’t be asking for help with any of the ones that are supposedly in my grasp to get and will only be helped if there are others already there to do said event.
I used to run axes all the time when i first played ranger. Loved it. Might try working on a new axe build once some of the ranger changes take effect in September.
To be clear: I;ve not had any problems with the pushing back how quickly we get trait points or even how many we get. I’ve actually had fun just learning the best way to play different utilities with my weapons skills and experimenting on that front. I’ve also not had any problems leveling or running in level appropriate areas. (In fact i’m now just doing some other maps on my newbie necro and finding it fairly easy to survive, so thats not even a problem. The biggest problems are still with trait unlocking and the places you have to be to even get those traits. What a player may find themselves left with is a hodge podge build that doesn’t have any synergy with their skills or utilities, leaving them feeling like they might be missing something, because they are.
Just my 2 coppers.
I’m not overly horrified like many players here over the changes made to the Trait system. I think the idea of earning the Traits as you go along is a GOOD idea….I just think it was implemented in a poor manner.
Yes. Very much yes. Tasks aren’t balanced for completion time or difficulty, nor for the levels in which traits open. Pushing progression back to levels 30-80 instead of 15-80 just makes leveling a slough.
While I got a few by accident while going for 100% zone completion (ugh), I still had to stumble on them if I didn’t specifically want them. I feel it would be better to have challenge markers much like skill points, and if the player succeeds at the task, he gets the trait.
Come to think of it, maybe one of the things that can be implemented is if you click on a certain trait, that it drops a purple marker on your map for where it is, so it is easier to find/get to as well. This is obviously more for new players, but even for older players that don’t frequent certain maps.
Tybalt and Tonn hit me in the gut a bit. Tybs will always be my bud and telling Tonns wife…that was hard for me. I really didn’t want to.
Recently I wasn’t so much as sad, but angry and super protective when
those inquest started advancing on Taimi after they wrecked Scruffy. Oh man I went full on ape when I got control again during that fight. And seeing all the people just choked out and hanging from the thorn vines has been intense in that “oh its on” kinda way.
Or, crazy idea: have there be a tally for the loot you might have gotten from killing those mobs, but only give them in a final chest as a reward for completing the event, and then make the rewards a touch better than they have been all together. The idea of intentionally failing an event for any reason, let alone to get more loot bags means that there is something wrong with the game design. Imagine if there was a loophole/way to garner more points in Scrabble if you intentionally sabotaged the game repeatedly instead of playing it to completion. If that were possible I’d be going back to the people who set the rules for the game and tell them that they needed to fix that loophole.
Inimicus: Although I agree that those little extra oomphs are good to have while leveling, the fact that people exclude others for some of that content coughdungeonscough that is more of a player base issue rather than a game design issue. Are these new characters of yours all created after the patch? If so then I’d say be very happy with that bug and not talk about it, less they fix it for you.
I hear what you’re saying here and I 100% agree.
That being said, over in the traits thread there are 38 pages of VERY similar complaints along with at least 10 if not more very sound and reasonable suggestions from the community. More importantly there are people that just want some kind of answer. Not a solution mind you. An answer. Even if the answer is: We hear you, but we cannot work on this at this time. Or, we hear you, but this is the direction we are simply taking the game in and apologize if thats not what you are looking for in the game. Or (hopefully) we hear you and we hope to have someone looking into some options but cannot give any deadlines/ETA on when we can seriously look into this. Anything. Please. Stop letting that post get to 38+ pages without a single word from someone. I think that is the kind of frustration many people feel that lead them to think that you all aren’t listening. This has been a thing since the LAST major feature update and its gone past the point of disconcerting.
You might be hearing but are you really listening? Go have a look at the last page or two of the Trait thread. You’ll find a red tag. It isn’t much but it’s something.
Edit: I see you found it.
hehe, yep, I went over there right after and saw it and was all
.
I’m really glad to have seen that over there finally.
Thank you Isaiah for your comment on here. i was just in another thread lamenting the lack of response. I’m glad to have been wrong…finally. So here’s the thing, as stated above, I think we should try to grab a quick overview from this thread for them (Devs) to look at as kind of our consolidated feedback on ways to hopefully improve this system. i’ll start with some that I can remember off the top of my head:
I for one love the “forced” exploration. I do. I like having to go to areas i don’t frequent to get things, but the repetition, cost, and area level disparity seem to be the biggest gripes.
I hear what you’re saying here and I 100% agree.

Level up scrolls mean nothing to me these days. Now, if they gave me an “Unlock any 10 traits” scroll I might be a bit happier with that, as that is useful for those of us with tons of level 80 alts and a handful of lowbie alts that might want some more traits without doing the same things overandoverandoverandover again.
Thank you for listening to us on this one. Really. Thank you. Still uneasy about other things, but this was a great show that you are hearing us in some way.
Its like this: the more I play my necro, the more I realize that cost wise for me, it would be FAR more fruitful for me to just sink my money into multiple armor sets for my existing level 80 necro than it would be for me to sink my money into getting these traits since i already know trying to earn all of these traits is a joke. I play games for fun. I work hard enough in my day to day doing repetitious nonsense. I don’t need the same from my “things I use to try to relax”. Problem is, more and more things are making me want to steer clear of even my level 80s lately.
Daggos: Their most unhappy customers are the ones that get censored first. I had been kicking around the idea of maybe even buying another gem card recently, but the utter lack of response from Anet in a meaningful and constructive way coupled with more decisions seemingly made in a vacuum is leading me to look elsewhere, which is sad.
Their reasons for this one are lame as well. Fact is, if I am playing a FPS I cannot see behind me either for someone about to gank me, etc. I have to rely on some combat instincts, luck, and skill to keep myself alive. If someone chooses to play that way, then more power to them. I’m getting real tired with Anet telling people how to play the game.
I will parrot OP. I’m not a SAB fan personally, but there is literally NO reason not to have it open for people to play when/if they want to.
Wow, Anet.
I don’t know how you are able to both put wind in a boat’s sails while also sinking it at the same time, but here you are again proving me wrong.
When I first heard that there were FINALLY going to be colored tags available I threw my hands in the air in glee.
Then i found out that tags were going up in price, becoming account bound and if you bought 4 or more tags that you’d be refunding the extra money back to players and i thought, AWESOME.
Then I saw that you were charging the new 300 gold price for the new colors.
Seriously Anet. Seriously. The ONE thing that has been almost begged for since the start (the ability to choose another color other than blue for a tag) for tons of great reasons stated over and over again in the forums and you turn it into a kittening money grab?!?!?!?!
Really? Do you have people come up with ideas and then get some random person to pop a squat over them before sending it on to the devs? Is that the MO in your offices lately because its sure seeming like it from my end as of late.
throws hands in air in disgust
I was trying to be a voice for you all, even when others were shouting down your practices. I was trying to give you all the benefit of the doubt, but this is just ridiculous. At this point, just stop. Stop listening to what we want since you are obviously not capable of implementing it without making it a money grab in some way. Stop listening since all that seems to happen is our wants becoming “features” in other games made by your parent company. I want(ed) to play this game. Not those. But it seems like we are still just their testing ground and i’m tired of it.
you’ve done it, power to you, so what is your advice, not elitist comment, how it could improve and how someone with barely any time to do the achievement.

yeah, seriously. It just takes some time and the desire to get the achievements.
Yeah, I’ve not seen many other WPs that are gone so far, but i wonder just what the angle is on this. Are these going to be more long term/perm changes that will change how people play or will these be some minor inconveniences for a few months before they get “repaired”.
Well, yes, thats what I figured as well. I just thought that there might have already been a thread started about this and its overall implications is all. Seems a fairly major thing for there not to have already been talk about it.
OK, maybe I’m missing it somewhere, but has anyone mentioned the missing waypoint at Fort Mariner? If so, can someone direct me to that thread.
He is shown going into Baradin’s tomb people.
Baradin.
If WoodenPotatoes is correct, he (Rytlock) is looking for Baradin to give his blessing to the ending of the curse and is acting as a proxy to him.
Not to fuel the fire, but honestly, not every class/build has a way to get +25% speed and Swiftness. I wanted fast movement, so I did both on my warrior. Builds are easier to change now, thankfully, so that’s not even much of an issue.
The only problematic class is Mesmer since you need a specific weapon.
However other classes have to sacrifice maybe some trait points or a skill-slot, so you can also just sacrifice a little bit DPS and just use runes of traveller or speed.
Another thing to keep in mind is that mesmers have blinks and other movement based skills that help them keep up. Certainly not as much as other classes, but then again not all classes are meant to be land traveling masters.
Seriously.
Can we jut stop with this mount posts already. I believe there is another new game that LOVES the hell out of their mounts.
OK, so Mid progress report then?
I have been working on my stripped down necro. For information sake, I spent down and separated the remaining money I had into a separate guild bank that this toon doesn’t access and keep a tally of the gold she’s earned so I can set her back to that when I play her. I also spent down a chunk of karma and donated/sold all of my low-mid level mats so I was starting clean on that front. I’m also trying to make it a point to read all the story and look at Vistas again and not just blitzing through the game in an attempt to get a new player experience. She only uses skill scrolls she earns and I am running her through the story at roughly appropriate levels. She is currently level 36, so thats 2 trait points. Instead of trying to spend any of my first 6 traits points on major traits I will be putting those into all of the minors.
So far the gameplay has not felt hard, at all. Now granted I am familiar with the class and the enemies (something I cannot unlearn) so that might be making it easier, but I am also challenging myself to play this necro differently than my level 80. I’m also actually having fun exploring again and finding some areas I’d forgotten about or even missed with my other play-throughs (and I did actually miss some places off the beaten path). I have an idea from how I’ve been playing her with how I will ultimately want to do my traits, but for now I am trying to go full organic with them until level 80. I’m not saying this new system is OK. Far from it, but I have found that without the “burden” of thinking about those traits as I go from zone to zone I am now being forced to get really good with my skills if I want to survive. I’m also finding myself experimenting a bit more with weapon combos since I’m not choosing those based on the traits I’d picked. I’ll have another update come level 60.
*(Note: I would NOT want to do this with more than one toon though, as it would be monotonous and WAY too expensive come level 80 and the eventual trait buy time comes around, which it will.)
Also, Wooden Potatoes has a great vid about this. In the trailer Rytlock goes into the last true heir’s tomb. (Remember the King and Rurik were NOT of royal blood).
Perhaps he goes into the tomb to get baradin’s blessing to un-do the curse. Basically working as a proxy to baradin.
You. Can. Do. The. Instances. With. Other. People.
If you want more than 5 people, or things like the big world event bosses, then fine, have at it.
Uhm…Thalador?
Ascalon was Charr lands. They were violently pushed out by the humans. Its like if the Native Americans suddenly rose up and took their lands back here in the states. I’m sure there would be a ton of people going, “Well, it really was their land in the first place.” I just can’t be that sad about the human plight in this game. They kinda brought a lot of that on themselves.
Anet has done (so far) an admirable job balancing the BIG call for instanced LS content that can be solo’d or done in small 5 man groups. (Which I must remind you was what they said when they LAUNCHED the game would be the standard.) The big super coordinated events like Wurm, Teq, etc were added in specifically for those like you that wanted BIG voice comm coordinated battles. There is also WvW for that too. I’m going to have to echo Kyrie here and say that they need to stay the course for the LS.
When playing GW1, I could take someone who started life in Cantha and bring them back to Ascalon to do events that were technically in the past.
As long as the new content takes into account the changed status quo I think it will be fine in so far as a starting character is still starting when the game “started” and will work their way story wise to the modern day when Rylock does the deed. I also don’t think all the ghosts are going to suddenly be like “Oh man, you Charr are a solid bunch. Up high!” Some might be thankful and others might be just as vengeful.
Being released from the curse and letting go of grudges aren’t the same thing. That being said, what it might mean is that while story AC stays the same (as it happens in the past), there might be 3 new paths coming for AC explore, which could be fairly neat.
Regarding falling to Nightmare:
If we are to go off the premise that the Pale Tree knows that the Sylvari are intrinsically linked to Mordy, and that she has been shielding them from his influence, it then might be further extrapolated that those in the Nightmare Court are there because they are “falling” into part of their inherent nature, but spurred on by active rebellion to the Pale Tree. They are essentially tapping into a deeper part of who they are (as servants of an elder dragon) by actively going against Ventari’s teachings, which is why once you fall you cannot come back. This would also explain why the soundless and those like Malyck are neutral. They have neither tapped into that side of themselves or are oblivious to it for now (although with the dragon waking that might change since they don’t have the pale Tree to protect their minds). With the aspect of Mordy hitting the center of the “everything” and corrupting it in the vision (and with that center being represented in the vision by the Pale Tree) we can see that there is a real threat to not only the Pale Tree, but to the Sylvari as a whole as Mordy’s influence grows.
Ex…o…tics?
Those exist? In the game?
j/k
One a month maybe though. usually in WvW and its way random. Sometimes its off an NPC mob in a tower, others is off an enemy player, and one time it was off a moa.
I can see it now: A sea of rangers with their pet Llamas behind them and above them all you see the name:
Dolly. :/
@Ascimator:
Speaking as someone who has easily dropped (since the start of this game and being one of the many Beta weekend players), I’ve dropped a few hundred dollars on this game for myself and family members in gemcards. Whether they were for some extra cosmetic items from the gemstore, utility items, or expansion slots for one of my many alts, i’ve dropped some serious real life coin for this game. I did this because i felt that for them to continue making quality things for the game that they needed the financial support for it. I love this game. I am a LONG time Guild Wars player and GW2 player. I WANT this gamer to not only succeed, but to thrive in the field of the MMOs out there now and those yet to come out. I’m also usually one of the staunchest defenders of the developers in this game, however this particular update is rediculous.
Some quick points here for you: First, if Anet is trying to tout build diversity and the ability to change your build on the fly for free, it is counter intuitive to argue that they also didn’t mean for people to unlock and get EVERY trait in the game. If they say they are trying to make it so people aren’t beholden to the meta, then it is counter intuitive to build your trait system so people have to study and plan out to make builds that fit the meta. Its perfectly fine if you don’t feel the need to unlock all of the traits and are happy with whatever ones you unlock while playing and then buy 2 or three more for the one (maybe 2) builds you might run, but some of us play PvE and WvW and have a toon fills more than just one or two roles even in one night of play and need a certain amount of build diversity. A new player coming into the game as it is now doesn’t have the breadth of knowledge about builds and traits that I or others might have, and they certainly don’t know enough about the game mechanics to make whatever traits they do stumble upon worthwhile as they level. In many cases that might make them feel like they are running sub-optimal builds just for running around in the world and if they don’t have someone helping them, they might get too drustrated with the game and leave before getting very far. That is money Anet won’t be getting. Second: When a system gates things like traits, which are specific to the abilities of an individual toon, behind events that occur in PvP areas like WvW, or in dungeon completion you will have many players opting to either not do it, or once again get frustrated with the game. For myself, i know i HATE doing dungeons most days. i really have to get myself into the mindset to do one and I didn’t even do my first one until I was level 80. Even then I needed to scrape together people to do it since most LFG people didn’t want me running with them if I didn’t know the dungeon. Now there will be even more people that don’t know the dungeons AND they won’t even have traits to use in said dungeon runs which means fewer people even getting to do the content even if they wanted to do it.
This update hurts the game. Period. I am currently running a small experiment and trying to level a new necro with no access to the money I accrued on my account, or karma, or materials. I’m trying to “re-see” the game as a new player as best as possible and seeing how easy or hard certain things are. There have been some positive things from this experiment, but I’m not level 30 yet, so traits and how they will or won’t affect me has yet to come up. What I do know is that i currently have a level 80 guardian that i leveled under the new system and her traits that I got organically and the ones I just bought for her still leave her feeling grotesquely incomplete. Can she function in PvE? Sure. But she doesn’t “play” they way I’d like her to and for a new player, that can be a turn off. i know for me I’ve stopped buying gem cards for a while now and i’m not the only one.
But I’m an engie.. we only have one stability skill, and thats only for 4 seconds every 30
Oh and a mortar aka sitting-duck gives stability, at the expense of living.
I have sadly long since learned that if I want to ‘play’ I can use my Engineer, but if I want to ‘succeed’, I need to change to a Warrior.
Uhm, you also have 2 fairly long lasting blocks with toolkit and shield, fast endurance regen, blinds…I mean really. Not everything needs you to be a flippin’ warrior in this game. Learn the classes.
Near as i can tell NC Soft has been listening VERY closely to all of our complaints and suggestions in these forums.
They’ve just opted to implement the ideas elsewhere. coughcough
Seriously, if you go through a lot of the complaints in this thread and others regarding features, etc that we wanted here and look at other…properties…you will find many of those things over there.
@Elden: I didn’t get too much into the story last night (as i got home late and have toddlers to wrangle), but from what i did play, (not including the LS instance) there were roughly 4 jumps that i had to do to get to the first LS instance on the new map and 3 to get to the vista from that point. All of those are assisted or done with the skills from the aspect crystals and aren’t overly complicated to either do or figure out. None of it is timed in a way that comes remotely close to making this game feel like a platformer. When I think of a platformer I imagine having to get through some kind of terrain obstacle course in a set time while dodging enemies or other environmental conditions meant to slow you down/stop you. This is more of a “hey there’s this new mechanic we are trying out here to make the world a bit more interactable” which also allows them to think of a map a bit more vertically at times. I like it as a new mechanic for an area meant for high level skilled players.
I just want to say that I don’t mind the jumping/aspect use to get around. I kinda enjoy it too. My only gripe is that 1) you have to use the aspect quickly or it tends to go away too fast and 2) when you NEED to drop it so you can fight a creature, you are sometimes stuck with it while the enemy starts hitting you. Basically, let us have “X” amount of charges we can use of a given aspect once we get it, but also the ability to drop it like a bundle before possibly entering combat.
