  • Alts as followers

I like this idea a lot. That would be one of the most awesome things to ever hit mmos in decades and a great incentive for “alting” as horizontal progression. This is horizontal progression if you think player, not character. For every alt you level you unlock a new hero, the alt himself, and you could play with them. as a full group, in instanced areas, such as dungeons, like in GW1, but those heroes would be your own alts as npcs. I could even play those instances with little or no coin/item rewards (if that’s used as a measure against botted farming, for instance). But it would be still every bit as awesome.

This is a brilliant idea. While I’m not 100% personally sold on the idea of helpers/followers in GW2 in the first place, this would be an excellent way to do it if it was done. I would love to see my main joined by even just one of my alts while out adventuring.

They did this in GW1. Was kinda cool! Not sure they will implement the system here tho as it was basically the hero system GW1 was built round

It’ll be interesting to see the future impact this thread in particular has on the game. No MMO has really nailed the horizontal progression (altho most of us seem to agree GW1 did a fine job) and yet so many players gravitate towards it.

There’s a huge potential in this thread alone to direct the game to something quite unique, but combined with the living story thread, we could see a intriuging 2014/15 for the game. WHilst the game hasn’t embraced the horizontal progression quite like its predecessor, it is well set up to embrace many ideas here. Many MMO’s aren’t that lucky. It’s a great position for GW2 to be in.

On a slightly side note, only a small proportion of the community are contributing to this discussion, as good and valuable as it is. If you as devs are as behind this as you say, it might be worth highlighting these initiatives a bit more to the wider community. Granted, if people don’t use the forum now, they probably wont, but may be a link on the news part of the login page is a good way to alert ppl to visit here.

Indeed. Whilst an unnecessary corporate tag (like “living Story”), it’s hard to argue against the CDI. We wont see the benefits in game for a few months, but at the very least it is provoking a better quality of forum posting.

Many MMO’s use such collaborations after a term or two of being around to much success. With some of the ideas being tossed around in these current threads, the future of the game looks healthier.

No problem.

There are lots of these hidden areas around the world. Some are jumping puzzles, some are mini exploration “dungeons”. You can get clues via your achievement panel under Exploration and Jumping Puzzles. Or you can just wander around and stumble across them as a surprise (as you have above).

Happy adventuring!

It’s a sad way of life with any MMO. Ppl forget everyone, including themselves, were new to all areas of the game once. Personally, I’d rather play a dungeon slow and have fun and let everyone enjoy, rather than worry about dps racing or skipping.

STarting your own group will help – you can lay down the rules in lfg/chat then.

If your guild is a quiet one, rather than leaving, you can do what a lot of people do and represent with multiple guilds. Plenty of ppl have guilds for different aspects of the game – eg dungeons, wvw. Then you can switch accordingly (just make sure out of courtsesy you explain to the guilds you wont always be representing)

Who still does this?

Been doing this since launch in all zones, but it’s been easier and more fun since Living World stuff has been extended and I’m caught up with metas. My OCD on meta AP hunting can take a break and I can get back to enjoying the world at large!

Sometimes it is nice just to pick a zone and just go wandering!

Back to having fun exploring zones on alts. Actually enjoying the game more now than I was when things were at a hectic schedule over the summer/autumn. I certainly feel more re-invested in the game world now – kinda how I felt at the turn of the year.

Can also try and catch up on dungeons I’ve missed and guild missions which I had stopped doing.

Lots to do

Easiest way to get a set of exotic armour is to visit the Orr Temples and buy what you need if you have the karma.

Crafting or TP works as well, but that can be dependant on your amount of money or supply of mats. I always found it a bit of a waste of gold to buy…but then again, it’s only virtual money so not something to worry about!!

If you are short on any of the above, equipping a full set of rares (very very cheap and easy to get) will keep you competitve enough whislt you take whichever path to get exotic (or ascended longer term). If you are going to wvw, I’d at least be decked out in rares first.

I know Anet prefer to keep their cards to the chest and whilst this other game has almost dropped off my playing list due to GW2, I’d like to see some strong headlines ahead for 2014 with some specifics to get us excited about.

Hi All,

This is my last day at work before the holiday season and I am going to be very busy!

Once I am on vacation I will have more time to respond and engage.

I am therefore going to postpone the focused discussion on Horizontal Progression until tomorrow. I will catch up post page 36 today (or at least try).

Meanwhile I have a question. This thread is BIG. Would the folks who have already commented on Horizontal want a new thread which is just based on Horizontal or should we just carry on with this thread?

Regarding my reminders from you about comments on some kind of reward for the Fractal reset, I am still thinking about feelings around it.

Chris

Normally I’d have said keep it here, but being at work right up until Xmas Eve, keeping track on this thread is becoming a nightmare. I’d like to see this thread closed with a summary from yourself of suggestions/proposals etc then a new one on horizontal that will be easier to follow. Or just a part two with a summary thread that highlights the important discussion points in this thread those who haven’t been able to catch up fully.

Have to say, wasn’t expecting to follow this thread, but it has been vastly superior to the Living World one and have especially found Izzy’s background info into your design reasons really interesting to read.

Incidentally I think the idea of giving ascended gear stat-switching ability gives us a kind of metric for determining how difficult it ought to be to acquire.

Say, (for example), ascended can go with 12 stat combinations. Functionally the same thing can be achieved by multiple exotic sets, but that’d be far less convenient.

Add in a bit of a premium for that convenience and in principle ascended gear perhaps ought to be priced around 15-20 times the ‘effort’ required to get exotic gear.

I’m not talking about gold price on the TP; exotic gear value has taken a dive due to it being much less desirable now, and so freely available. I’m talking effort in terms of playtime to get the karma/dungeon/celestial/cultural sets.

I’m completely on the fence about making ascended sellable via TP. If the acquisition is tuned too high the prices will be astronomical and we grind gold while watching inflation push it continually out of our reach. If it’s too easy, ascended becomes a redundant brand of exotic. There is a certain convenience factor to that and it is seductive.. but darn it, I like the idea of gear attainable through gameplay only. And gameplay challenges more than through repetitive gameplay, but.. well, not everybody could beat Liadri even if you did put an ascended weapon on her.

Though if ascended remains a source of ‘vertical’ progression and not optional, all that goes out the window: it has to be easy.

I know that’d still devalue what people’ve already put into gearing up their characters, but I can’t think of a good solution that honors that effort while putting ascended in reach of the average 1-2 hour/day guy with multiple alts. That’s the reason why I think communication on the subject from Arenanet can’t come soon enough.

Yes, I know you’re communicating! I’m grateful. But getting a ‘game plan’ out to players is crucial, whatever ends up decided.

Many of you have mentioned this problem, so let’s discuss it some more. If the supply of ascended gear is made more accessible to the populous either through drop rates of items and mats, and/or sale ability of gear then is this something that is acceptable to early adopters?

Regarding:

‘Yes, I know you’re communicating! I’m grateful. But getting a ‘game plan’ out to players is crucial, whatever ends up decided’

There has been a clearly communicated game plan. Our focus is on Horizontal progression and I felt that Ascended was a necessary step. However as many have pointed out this gear was designed to sit between Exotic and Legendary and thus be a better bridge. Personally i feel like it could be made more accessible through playing different parts of the game. Once we have concluded the discussion on the tightening up of Vertical Progression we will move onto Horizontal discussion. Huzzah (-:

Thanks for your input and i hope that adds some more clarity.

Chris

Personally speaking, I wouldn’t mind if others got them elsewhere or that crafting them was made more accessible after I’d got mine as long it wasn’t being handed out (not that I’m saying that is being suggested). I doubt any rational player would object to widening how people obtained their gear as long as the effort/time in obtaining it was as equal and fair as possible from each source.

Horizontal progression:

I’d love to see some more use for skill points regarding our progression (not the current one where you add a new skill and it costs a lot for no real reason). For example you could add a new tab to the skill panel, where you can unlock your skills again (even weapon skills) but they would have different cosmetics. Like greater fireball, or bull’s charge summons a bull that runs with you towards your target, or add different colour to skills etc. These would have increased skill point costs, since they are only cosmetical, you could even tie some of them to some achievements/challenges or if you decide to use prestige classes to those as well.

Oh I LOVE this idea!!!!!

Its not a bad idea. I think I like it.

Wondering if it would be possible to turn off the new skill’s effects and go back to the old one..vice versa. If I got tired of that bull after bull charging so many times, could I go back?

Ah yes I read it as opening up a choice of which you would use rather than being stuck with the one you unlocked most recently. You could almost tier the skills with blue/green/rare/exotic/asc/legendary for their effects and you chose which you wanted. That may be over complicating the idea mind you…….!

Im simply amazed at the amount of people that are opposed to vertical progression being confined to FoTM. If you think about it, it is the only place ascended gear is required(currently). So why does a stat increase even need to exist outside of it?

If ascended stats were confined to fractals, then the rest of us who may not want to step foot into fractals would not need to worry about power creep or a treadmill in the open world.

Im very much in favor of this and again, Im amazed that people are against it.

Yep and kudos to you Cesmode for offering the counter argument.

Chris

I am 100% with Cesmode on this one. I believe the original suggestion was meant this way:

Many people are not pleased with your vision of vertical progression. However, if you really want to keep it. If some people really want it that badly, can you at least restrict it to one area of the game so the rest of us do not get punished by the power creep in WvW or elsewhere.

The counter argument is that it would be adding additional vertical progression for the sake of adding it rather than it being added to enhance fractals. AR works perfectly whilst stat creeps would in no way improve it that I can see.

Here is a crazy brainstorm idea, not in anyway indicative of our direction.

What if there was vertical progression in the Fractals with gear that increased in stats but when outside of the fractals defaulted back to BiS numbers?

I am asking this because it is going to generate some left field conversation not because I think it is or isn’t a good idea.

Chris

For what purpose or benefit would said proposition bring? Currently Fractals works very well as it is because of how it is currently set up. How would the idea improve fractals? (ie can you expand a little more on the idea?)

Well let me be devil’s advocate then and give one example. Make it easier to play through earlier fractals when playing with lower level friends.

Chris

I dont see that as attractive to do though. The game has a fantastic feature in its scaling which maintains challenge at lower level content across the entire game, whether it is zones or dungeons.

If higher fractal player was with me, I’d hope for us both to experience challenge. Otherwise the lower fractal player would feel carried (me) and the higher lvl fractal player would feel bored. The sense of achievemnt for us both would be gone. Remember, people are getting to higher fractals because they are skilled not because of their stats.

It would go against a fundamental ideal of the game you implemented.

If vertical progression was to be widened, you already have agony in place. STrategic use in elite instances, bosses or content"could" be a way forward.

“World exploration is very complex, and I won’t dwelve into it for being off-topic. But it would be nice if, at the very least, the WPs were account bound, so we could quickly go to our favourite area or help our friends in a specific dungeon without being restricted only to our main.”

I like the ideas..except this last last one. This would kill alt playing for me if forced to have anything of the map already uncovered. As I said earlier, the exploration side of things is a great strength of the franchise – anything to lessen that is detrimental in my eyes. The solution to compromise I guess would be an item to unlock 100% map completion on other toons when you hit 100% on one char. That would give the choice and also improve the limited reward from 100% map complete in place.

Apologies, slightly off topic, just needed to comment tho!

Apologies if this is said – at this time of night after a 12hr shift, I’m only reading dev replies atm.

One of the best forms of horizontal progression is map exploration. You guys are usually pretty good at rewarding exploration, in fact certainly the best from an MMo stance I’ve personally played and that applies to both GW1 and GW2. What I would say is that I’d like to see more of what you did with GW1 where you made it pretty challenging to explore 100%. Now that isn’t to say I’d like to see the wall grinding return – that was just a bit too silly. But, lots more secrets and easter eggs where you are rewarded with titles, minis, artistic zone maps for your home instance maybe. Like I said, this is real strength for the team and could be something to progress further with.

As for Vertical? My only peev is the constant renewal of gear this can bring alongside extra levels. Whilst I feel you have too many tiers as I said earlier, I think if Ascended is the final tier then it feels right to have it take some time to complete. It’s a question of balance I guess. It doesn’t bother me as it is, but it is obviously bothers a significant portion of the community so maybe need balancing in terms of acquisition (but I believe that has been discussed in depth already anyway). As long as more tiers or levels are never added, I personally feel iyour gear acquisition system works pretty well Vs the traditional “run an instance x number of times and hope you get lucky” other mmos use.

Whether horizontal or vertical, one of the key things is that the obtaining or the grinding should be fun. Legendary weapons are an excellent horizontal progression you added. The time investment factor is spot on, it’s whether the obtaining of the mats can be considered fun. That at the moment is inconsistent due to RNG, but again that leads on to the rewards topic which is a sep issue as you stated earlier.

Not sure if any of that makes sense, I’m pretty tired

A question to help direct the discussion a bit:

What are some of your favorite progression systems of all time in others? Be they horizontal, or vertical, just which ones really got you excited and were fun for you to continue to progress in?

For me, Final Fantasy Tactics is one I loved, where I was able to continue to unlock new jobs and advanced professions for my characters, as well as level up their abilities within those professions. It remains one of my all time favorite games, and one of my favorite systems of progression in any game. I’m also pretty darn fond of that Guild Wars game and skill collection.

GW1 obviously got the horizontal progression right straight off the bat. The team should be applauded for their achievements there. No gating either. So good in fact, Secret World basically copied the skill system (didn’t quite get it as right mind you, but this style of mmo works rather well imo)

Anarchy Online had an excellent gear progression system where you could “twink” on higher lvl gear by laddering your stats. It’s quite iconic and synonymous with the game, but worked really well in my mind. It is however, a heavy vertical progression system and would put off many modern casual gamers.

GW2’s gear system I am fond of too. I have no issue with Ascended as it is, although an increase in mat obtainability would aid it, but I think that would come with a vastly improved reward system anyway. I’m also inclined to think it has too many tiers now and actually 3 would be optimum for this game (most people take a lvlling set, then equip rares or exotics until they work into Ascended. No need for more tiers as nothing is gained from it). As for the rest of the game, the only other concern is the time gating aspect. Time gating or limits have no place ever in an MMO in my opinion. The game is so open to players due to its lack of gating elsewhere, that time gating actually hurts it a lot.

Lotro arguably had the most accessible vertical system before it decided to pump up the levels and make its Legendary Weapon system a monstrous grind each year. If you look at it as a game up until just after Moria finished, it pretty much nailed it. Now, sadly it fallen into disrepair as it tried to emulate WoW and not focus on what it did best in previous years. It does however have an excellent wardrobe and social gear system. Something that would greatly benefit GW2.

And as you said, FF Tactics also nailed it progression wise.

That was a pretty great article. It’s a fair criticism of Scarlet, without trying to soften the problems or getting over-the-top outraged. It has some insightful criticism that I rarely ever see brought up on the forum. (Why does she have to be sylvari? It doesn’t add to her character, since she casually ignores all sylvari traits, and an asura would require less suspension of disbelief.)

I don’t mind Scarlet, storytelling flaws and all, but this is a really good analysis that I definitely agree with.

Completely agree and it was refreshing to see a mature article on Scarlet which incorporates much of the criticism players have yet understanding that the story is too late just to wipe clean and improvements are being made accordingly. Altho I’m not a fan of her presentation either, I’m also slightly intrigued how this will play out. There’s just enough interesting bits amongst the bad stuff to keep my interest in the story alive for now.

How long do meta achievements last?

in Living World

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

Depends on the release. It used to be that the start of each month would last 1 month and the second release of the month would last 2 weeks. That has changed and become more fluid recently – eg the TA one came down after only 2 weeks which caught many off guard especially as it said it was up for October. WVW was I think a 7-8 week meta and the Tower ones have obviously been allowed to continue util the story arc there ends.

The lesson atm is, expect them to last 2 weeks and if they go beyond, then think of it as extra time to do other fun things in game

Does anyone Do Teq (or any dragons) anymore?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

I stopped playing this game a year ago, I remember how crowded this fight was. So I go today excited with my magic find tarts ready and what do I find? I’m there alone all by myself. I have no idea what you guys are talking about, guild activate or whatever that is.

Tequatl was redesigned a few months ago to make it more challenging. The encounter was claimed to be balanced around having 80 average players and would scale into the hundreds. Realistically, the encounter is balanced around having a minimum of 80 players that know how to play, because the average player doesn’t.

It’s nowhere near raid hard, but it’s like trying to do a raid with purely random people and no communication. Since a lot of servers were nowhere close to even getting the 1st 25% down (phase 1), they quit after the first week or two and never tried again. The few servers that did do it, and commonly, still do it everyday.

For the servers that do it everyday, they’ve done it enough that communication isn’t needed since most people are regulars. On these servers, you can just show up, though you should be at least 30 minutes early, or an hour to get on the main server.

Also, magic find only affects the drops you would receive from mobs and the mobs in Tequatl’s encounter no longer drop anything (to prevent farming).

Wow, I had no idea, maybe for a whole year that would be a normal change, but it was fun and rewarding, now there’s just nothing rewarding about the game. I still can’t find people anywhere though, I assume that they are playing PvP or WvW. Looks like the changes made affected PvE to the point it became deserted. Anyway thank you for caring to share with me the changes that occured.

People will br gravitating to the current release(s). Which currently means Fractals, Kessex Hills and the Kessex Hill Tower instance. Player visibility after that comes down to server specific – for eg, I rarely have problems finding other players in most zones on Gunnars Hold, but we also don’t have a high wvw population so that could explain that.

As for Teq..well yes it needs changing somehow – a sensible timer or a scaling change seem to be the preferred suggestions I’ve read so far. Problem is, the releases we see are made 4 months prior, which would mean we are unlikely to see any Teq change until 4 months after the feedback kicked in.

Probably Kodan. Partly because they fit with my Norn main, but I like their social structure and philosophies as well. Also, their ship homes are just awesome.

They are also one of the better dialogue scripted races and I could really get behind a well scripted alliance story aiding them against Jormag.

Ah don’t worry, I’ve removed said post so it doesn’t interrupt your posts (I didn’t realise you hadn’t finished when I posted).

Scarlet hate

If you play through the Lich story, it seems to snake in all directions before it makes any real sense, much like the Scarlet story. This was a frequent complaint at the time. It’s extremely messy in fact mission by mission as you play – it really isn’t until the end the confusing threadlines start to make any sense and some are done tenuously. That in many ways parallels the Scarlet issue – they may yet pull all this together and make sense in the same way.

The only positive I will draw from Prophecies as a story in comparison was that at least you had it all there to play through as and when you wanted. With the LS, we are drip fed it and I think that has compounded the issue. If the whole story was laid down from start to finish like Propehecies, it is arguable the complaints would be less loud.

I’m not defending Scarlet, I’m not going to bareface lie and say she’s a great villain, but historically speaking, all I’m saying is there is precedent for poor villains in the past.

Scarlet hate

I don’t understand the Scarlet hate. She is no worse than treahern or kormir or shiro or rurik. People act like she is ruining some incredible story, newflash: it already sucked just as bad before. This ain’t lord of the ring folks.

I’ve noted this as well. The Lich and Shiro weren’t well fleshed out villains (Shiro was exceptionally dire) and Rurik was generally despised in the same way Logan is. The Prophecies and Factions stories were beyond woeful – I’m playing through them again now on HM and the story and the missions are cringeworthy to play. Far more than most of the GW2 storylines. And then Nightfall came along and whilst an improved story, suddenly everything that came before was suddenly and conveniently “oh yeah that was all Abaddon”.

I’m not a fan of Scarlet myself and agree with most of the complaints about her, but it’s not totally out of line with the quality of GW storytelling that has come before. And frankly MMO storytelling is rarely amazing anyway. I also play LOTRO, and believe me…I dream of GW2 level storytelling over there…and they have actual source material to use!!!!!!

The thing we have to remember is the devs have acknowledged the problem with Scarlet and confirmed an end is written in. Regardless of whether we like/want etc the Living Temp Story concept, they are working 4 months behind our feedback at least. It was simply too late to remove her from the story given their schedule. All this is being addressed and hopefully we will see improvements down the line.

Has this always been in Mount Maelstrom?

There are a lot of threads on these across the forums. Seems they are in most/all zones and are new with the HD patch.

Question is…did you touch it..?

This might help explain things – copy/pasted from the Lore subforum;

BobbyStein.2315:
Fractal work started back in August, which is when players first encountered Scarlet and around when the votes were tallied.

Hopefully the lesson is there for future releases as we have almost caught up to the point where the Scarlet feedback should be kicking in.
