Endless Kodan Tonic = No Playable Race?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

Kodan simply do not have enough variety or versatility to become a playable race. Their limitations make for a far better and more interesting NPC. To become playable would lose much of what makes them unique.

I think it is safe to say the tonic is the compromise here.

Even if I am wrong, 175k is a nominal Karma sum, easily and quickly recouped by the time any potential race addition would arrive in game.

I haven’t done this episode yet because I’ve read about all the bugs and am waiting for fixes. But here is something I don’t understand: in order to complete this step you need an elixir. The elixir only lasts a certain amount of time which apparently is WAI. Yet I have read in other posts that:

-It isn’t made clear to players that the elixir will expire so people are surprised when this happens
- people don’t know what is required to make the elixir again
-and in this thread apparently the Devs didn’t make sure that the Firestone would be available again

This boggles my mind.

The elixir buff has a timer on it which is consistent with other buffs. So the temp nature is clear. However, it resets when daily resets. That was not made clear.

To make the elixir again, after the story you get a guide which replaces the story journal. However, there is bug which appears to be blocking that for many.

The firestone is available from a vendor which the guide I mentioned above indicates to you. However, on top of the bug that prevents the guide showing, the firestone wasn’t always appearing in the vendor.

Of course, the loot table could change with the advent of this year’s Wintersday.

Yes they are and yes the recipe is in the loot table

Here is Gailes quote from the bug forum in case it is required to save searching

Ok, I have a suggestion. While the team is investigating the fix for this, you should do the following: After you have completed the story, if you wish to resume the achievements, be sure to select “Continue this chapter” and not “Restart this episode.” If you do the latter, there is a high probability the Grawl Firestone will not be displayed in the vendor window. But if you continue, you should be able to acquire it.
Hope this helps!

Dueling in PVE?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

Why isn’t there an option to begin a duel with someone in PVE?

Because from day 1 of Guild Wars 2 PvE was designed specifically with it being Co-Op mode only.

Just throwing this out there, but…..the only things I see as Co-Op in this game are the dungeons, fractals, and raids. That list can be shortened as it is very simple to solo dungeons and fractals (both I have soloed, highest fractal being 76). If the PvE is suppose to be completely Co-Op, then shouldn’t everything be harder? As it is I go to starter maps and offer assistance and receive a message back once in a blue moon. And with this, how does dueling take away from “Co-Op” in PvE? The option to duel would be just that, an option.

The co-op side of things is more about a sharing mentality than a specific mode like dungeons and fractals.

- farmable nodes are client side to prevent competing for materials
- Monster kills are shareable to all involved in combat to avoid camping and /roll
- dynamic events allow for multi person participation and contribution
- a greater focus on open world boss fights and metas

Some of these are things that many other MMO’s either don’t do, or GW2 has led the way on or popularised and are what brought players here for a co-operative, not competitive spirit in pve. It’s why Achievement Leaderboards never took off beyond a select few players. Same with Adventure Leaderboards and the unpopular nature of activities.

(On a side note, dungeons are not designed to be soloable. The fact that you or others can, is a testament to individual skill. The vast majority of players would never be able to solo a dungeon or fractal.)

One thing I noticed today was that the Kodan have knowledge of many Worldly events across Tyria despite their isolation. I would normally find it hard to imagine they know of things like Thaumonova, but clearly knowledge is being passed to them, presumably by adventurers, and even into the wild lands beyond Frostgorge.

LS1 was a series of open world events and festivals. When one episode went live, the previous was removed from the game. Making them instanced for map wide populations which took up a few episodes means
a) ensuring they have the tech to do. Megaservers aren’t the same thing as static districts
b) a lot of bug testing and QA. It took a lot of work for them to get SAB working again after all the changes to the code and that’s just an instance.

Then you end up with populations split up all over the place and not enough ppl to make sure the events are completable. The Watchwork Invasions alone benefited from full maps as did the Battle for LA and Scarlet. To re-scale them would mean more work.

Why didn’t they do it earlier? Well LS2 was a new format again and there would have been no point converting LS1 to a format that could have proven not to work as a storytelling format.

Bitterfrost Frontier Map

in Living World

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

The map is small and very easy and quick to travel across with all the options they give. Extra wps would devalue the tubes and leylines which in turn would devalue the masteries. Some of the HoT areas have the same or greater distances to travel between waypoints and Silverwastes is much, much worse. Neither have suffered long term.

The bitter cold elixir does have a guide, but it is currently bugged for some ppl. Once the story is completed, it appears where the story indicator was in the top right. This is how I go what I needed, however there is a known bug which they are working on to fix this for those who aren’t seeing this. The bugs forum gives more info on it and a workaround.

Randulf.7614

It’s not odd, it;‘s just an enormous amount of work to convert LS1 into the newer format. The original format LS1 was released in wouldn’t work with the World today and it would still need significant time and resources to iron out new bugs with the updated code or new tech to put it in its own instanced world map.

Simply put, there aren’t enough resources to make LS3, an expac and LS1. Whilst I 100% agree LS1 is needed, I’m not sure the wider community would want new and future content dropped to make it happen.

As for HoT loose ends, I think they are done and dusted. If we end up taking down 1 or more dragons before the expac, then even more lore and potential will disappear. I just hope a rich and detailed story is being set up to counterbalance what is lost.

New playable race (theory, possible spoilers)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

Pretty much zero chance of playable Kodan. They are an interesting race, but there is no logic or versatility in them that makes them viable for a playable race the way gw2 is set up.

As for a new race, I will be surprised if tbey add one. They have stated it is a lot work recording the VA for what they have. That is a lot of extra scheduling and lines to be fitted in each episode for every new race.

The more we see these tonics, the less likely a new race becomes. They clearly are meant to fill that gap.

Randulf.7614

What was weird about Marjory was the fact that she literally just nominated you to be the leader. I.e. “I’ll let you make the important decisions and follow what you say”. Then the very first opportunity she gets to listen to you it’s “You don’t know me! You can’t tell me what to do!” And runs off. The commander wasn’t heavy handed at all. It was a bad idea. The commander said it was a bad idea. And the commander told Marjory he/she thought it was a bad idea. Commander didn’t even explicitly say “Don’t do it”. Just that Marjory should really reconsider. But Marjory decided to get belligerent about it anyway.

And grief over a parent isn’t a good reason to react the way Braham did. Losing a woman who just happened to give birth to you but whom you’ve never actually had an emotional attachment to is an especially poor reason.
A lot of people lost their parents. Marjory lost her sister. The girl she grew up with and loved dearly. But Marjory didn’t just blame the commander for absolutely no reason and storm off. She handled it like an adult. Took some time off and came back to do her kitten job. Her poor behavior didn’t come until much later and for completely unrelated reasons.
Many PC’s lost their parents and it affected literally no one. The story moved on and the PC kept doing their job of saving the world.

^ THIS. I 10.000% agree with what Squee said. I undestand that they both lost someone important to them (but they were NOT the only ones), and i also understand that they are angry about it. But they have absolutely no reasons to direct that anger towards the Commander. No reasons. At all.

All we did was tell Marjory that trusting a super villain who suddenly pretends to be a good guy might be a bad idea, and tell Braham to wait a few days to see if Taimi could come up with a better plan. And we got a middle finger and a kittenk you!" as response. It’s nonsense.

No our conversation with Majory was a lot more than advising it would be unjust. We virtually told her she wasn’t allowed. She reacted exactly as her character would. We know from her background she is very independently minded and should have known how she would have reacted. It was our character that seemed to forget this. Marjory was justified in her reaction, which was nowhere near as bad as ppl are making out anyway.

Braham is young, angry and headstrong. And from a different culture to us. Grief affects people in illogical and unexpected ways. There is absolutely no possible way to say what he did was wrong, when such a reaction is entirely plausible given the circumstances. He had just reconciled with a Mother and immediately lost her. That would have caused confusing emotions for him and lashing out is to be expected.

Just because other characters lost people, does not mean there are set rules for how an individual must deal with their loss.

Neither acted out of character at all given the circumstances, in fact for Marjory to essentially roll over on our command would have been quite the opposite.

It’s nice to get more drama and conflict anyway – it’s more believable and interesting when groups don’t always get along.

Dueling in PVE?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

Duelling is pvp and ANet have expressed a desire to keep game modes separate. There was an outcry about too much pve in WvW at one point and Anet took steps to try and reverse that trend.

There is no reason to have open world pvp or duelling in pve at all in this game. WvW and now Guild Hall arenas all have the facility to serve that purpose. There would be virtually no gain for Anet Vs the potential backlash and toxicity which could occur as a result. The only potential to have duelling elsewhere is a sep queue or lobby in the pvp area, well away from the open world/pve mode where it appears to be largely unwanted.

Is this a new trend?

in Living World

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

Well, grief over a lost parent seems a good reason and i think the explanation from the AMA if i read it right

Marjory was also justified since we were being a bit heavy handed with demanding what she could or could not do.

So far, reactions are justified from a certain pov

I did think of that, but in the end we just decided to play and unlock as many levels as we could. Will be next week before we’re all back online to try it. You missed the part where Taimi clarified that she wasn’t thinking about actually getting the dragons to fight one another, and instead thinking about using their magics against one another, right?

I don’t see how is that possible without letting them meet each other.

Taimi specifically said not pitting them directly, so it’s going to be the use of technology. That is the entire point of the last 2 episodes – research for Taimi.

Having two Dragons fight each other sounds awesome in theory, but in practice may be rather hard to pull off. And it also denies an epic battle for us.

Whatever happens, I sincerely hope we don’t kill off any Dragon prior to an expansion. The sheer amount of maps and lore and potential that would be lost, would be a travesty for the game.

Not enough traversability on Bitterfrost

in Living World

Randulf.7614

We have thermal tubes, leyline gliding, waypoints and all on a half-sized map. Getting around felt easier than ever to me. Certainly 10x easier than Silverwastes is to traverse.

The thermal tubes only cover half the map and the leyine track covers the exact same area and is hard to get to due to the updrafts being the wrong height. The right side of the map is completely cut off from the rest.

I am looking at the map and tubes are covering enough of the map not to be an issue – the right side is def not cut off. The Bitter Cold is within walking distance from tube and the Hot Spring has 3 tubes, which form part of a mini unofficial jumping puzzle and thus shouldn’t have waypoints at all.

If they covered any more, then we’d never need to walk at all. This is hostile territory, it would make no sense to have loads of waypoint technology here and is meant to convey a sense of danger and threat. It’s already easy to navigate with the resources they provide, any more would just trivialise the map.

Is Braham becoming the next Logan?

in Living World

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

Yes but we no longer have the same level of authority since we are Commander in title only and work outside of The Pact. Braham is neither part of the Pact or our Guild.

I’m not seeing where we have acted out of character – we are a Guild leader now working independently. Realistically the only person a Norn will truly listen to is Knut and it would be more our responsbility to convince him of our plan and direction so as to discourage more lives lost. If Braham wants to charge off and get himself killed in the name of revenge and glory…so be it. It is def not our place to interfere in that.

On a side not concerning our responsibilities, I’m still not entirely convinced that we are acting responsibly in allowing Taimi exclusive access to Dragon research which would be benefit all of Tyria, when we have 3 Orders which we should be trusting in a lot more with that info.

Braham is acting in character for a headstrong Norn who is grieving for lost parent. He has had poor development up to this point and to me, this makes him more interesting. Believing in the Legend of the Tooth and charging forth to defeat Jormag is more in keeping with how the Norns should be than relying on science and tech from other races.

I think the issue is that ppl look at Braham’s reaction from a human perspective when he is from a different culture. Frankly, my Norn would gladly take up the Hunt and join him in Glory!
