Okay, teasing aside:

All feedback is valuable. It will take some people experienced in assessment on the back end (ANet’s side) to really get good metrics out of it, but it’s all valuable. Because gaming isn’t just about numbers and digital bits. It’s about how players feel during the experience. Even a six-year-old can say he doesn’t like something, even if he doesn’t understand why. But losing that six-year-old is still a lost sale. (No, I’m not comparing some of the forum feedback to six-year-olds, even though I should. :P)

When it comes to assessment, you want good raters. That means people experienced in assessment. Yes, you want people who are also experienced in the specific thing being measured (in this case, GW2), but opening the doors to “all vets” just means you get a slimmer subsection, and that actually puts a bias on feedback. New players still matter, and those new players turn into veterans, eventually.

I’ve been in betas for other games that basically required an application (almost an interview) just to get in. They wanted to know your experience with other games and general playing habits, so they could gather suitable feedback. Not a bad strategy when it comes to limited resources, but again, it puts a bias toward experienced players.

What experienced players are good at is having words and terms that can describe their judgments and motivations. So you’re not entirely wrong on that, but it’s like comparing Achievement Points to International Baccalaureate: Composition scores. The correlation may exist, but it’s not a good one.

What we can hope for are those who expressed the most interest by buying into the game early are also able to relay their feedback competently. I think your idea of having a sort of CDI-type space exclusively for beta feedback is a good one. It puts the feedback in a solid place, and with strong monitoring, hedges out whiners, trolls, and baseless complaints in favor of keeping the conversation going.

Yay, vote for Evon!

Unfortunately, unless ANet is feeling exceedingly generous…

If you want the thing, you have to pay the price for the thing. If you can’t afford the price for the thing, save up and play the stock market until you can afford the thing.

Conversely, if unpaid-HoT veterans get free looky-loos on the beta, I deserve a free Legendary of my choice.

Today's dailies: You do fractals YES or YES.

  • Double Fractals which defy natural gameplay, and yet exclude dungeon groups.

Please elaborate on this. How does fractals defy natural gameplay ?

Are people who play them an anomaly now ?
Are that somehow accessing something that shouldn’t be there ?

Lets be real here the ignorance from that statement is beyond belief. Plenty of people run fractals daily alongside doing other dungeons. Perhaps coming out of the world boss train shell wouldn’t hurt the crowd that thinks Fractals defy normal gameplay. Heck they may actually learn something by doing them other than press 1.

Unfortunately, I can’t remember the last time a Fractal popped up while I was solo-mapping Metrica Province. Nor did I see a Fractal portal open up while my friend and I were doing paired up to have fun in Silverwastes after our guild declined to run dungeons.

So, way to completely miss the purpose of calling out bad design decisions. There’s no AP for that, sadly. Seems like the qq-hurt over getting rid of double-fractal dailies (even if the OP is mildly entitled about it) stems from someone omg-getting something when they “shouldn’t,” because they don’t play in the way someone else demands.

Of course, it’s really ignorant to assume that people don’t do other PvE things like events, gathering, wandering, exploration, jumping puzzles (which I can’t remember being in a the rotation), and contributing to end-game zone objectives like Orr, Dry Top, and Silverwastes. It’s not all captial-vistas and boss trains.

As an extra note, Heart of Thorns is intending on revamping Fractals entirely and giving Fractals their own daily tab.

So, in the end, I guess OP gets to win.

One thing that I have done is I make a separate tab in my chat window called “QUIET” and make sure to have everything unchecked, then click the little speech bubble icon in the corner and play without any visual noise coming from any source.

Just something to keep in mind.

I just keep a Map tab, so unless I’m doing group content that might need communication (or I maybe just get curious), all that inane blorf doesn’t hit my screen.

OP, just try to ignore all this negativity and the trollish assumptions and manufactured allegations against you.

Hopefully, someone from Anet will have read this thread and will have taken on board what you have said and what you meant by it.

Hopefully, they will realise (as some of us have) that you are being perfectly reasonable in your request and will just, at some point, add a couple more options to the daily list, to ensure people have a little more choice, without having to do parts of the game they find particularly unpleasant, or stressful, for whatever reason.

After all, this is supposed to be a fairly casual, online game; not an unpleasant, inflexible job.

Maybe they should just put in a “Dispense Daily Reward” button.

No dailies required. Gives the same reward, but puts a 24hr symbol of a crying baby over your head until the daily reset…

No one is asking for that.

Might be a good thing for you though, since people asking for changes to dailies bothers you so much.

Clearly my comment was in jest, but seriously, it might as well be.

The arguments are basically this, “I want to get the daily reward, but I don’t want to have to do anything I don’t want to in order to get it.” And somehow you (and I guess others), find this reasonable…

I just took it to an extreme for teh humor.

What if someone only likes doing RP. Do we somehow need to accommodate that, too? Like have 3 dailies that revolve around walking through capital cities emote-speaking?

Or what if I really don’t like to do anything but Silverwastes chest farm. Like I don’t want to do anything else but that. Now I can get up in arms about how I can’t get my daily done while only doing SW farming? “Why do I have to do events in Queensdale!! Why do I need to go see a Shiverpeaks vista!! Anet whyyyyyy!! I don’t like doing those things, I thought this was play how you like!! More like play how Anet likes huehuehue”

Well, part of the issue is that in the past you could get your dailies done while doing your map completion or whatever else you liked, within reason of course. And then Anet decided the metrics on certain parts of the game were too poor and tried to encourage people to do them by reworking the dailies.

Apparently fractals really needed the help as they are the only thing that gets doubled up on.

Don’t get me wrong, the changes that added PvP and WvW dailies are great. Its nice that those two game modes can get them done pretty easily, and to my understanding get them be largely doing what they’d be doing anyway. I could be wrong on that, I don’t PVP, but I think that is what most PVE players want.

No waiting on long timer world bosses. No wrangling a group together for an unrewarding fractal you won’t enjoy. No competing with other players for kill credit because we need to cram into one single zone for the day for event credit.

If the best suggested solution for the issues people have with PVE dailies is to go do PVP because it is so much easier and faster, there is a problem with PVE dailies.

PvP is much faster. You get credit for doing two dirt-simple things you would normally do anyway (capture, defender, …rank points), and score one or two wins with the Class of the Day. Which covers half the classes. I suspect a lot of the “shut up and deal with it” crowd do a lot of PvP and get dailies within ten minutes of logging in.

WvW is a big improvement. You get credit for actually helping your server. It’s mostly in the natural course of gameplay (except maybe veteran killer?).

Both PvP and WvW have relatively immediate, or at least natural, daily acquisition.
PvE dailies are terrible:

  • Cramming 50+ level 80s into an underused zone for event completion, instead of sending the zerg out to a region.
  • Double Fractals which defy natural gameplay, and yet exclude dungeon groups.
  • Region vistas that can be accomplished by facerolling into a capital city.
  • Waiting 2-3 hours for a boss timer to finally come around, then have the boss event not even be challenging because the zerg has it on farm.

I mean, aside from daily gather and mystic forge, that about covers everything that is PvE dailies. And they’re all bad from a design perspective. It’s one of the reasons daily PvP rooms are even a thing.

Healing power IS in a bad state in this game, and it does need to be fixed. However, I can’t think of a really good fix that belongs in GW2. Too many of the fixes would require huge overhauls of parts of the game that, quite honestly, are beyond the scope of what this game can and should do.

If I was to suggest an “easy” fix, I’d say to make some kind of “overflow” health bar, that active healing (not regeneration) can push you into. Have it drain quickly, so you don’t stay there long, and have it do … something. I’m not sure what, but it would have to be useful without being overpowered.

Perhaps the game could use some kind of preemptive healing mechanic. I don’t know if it really fits, but I played another game that uses it and is intentionally part of the design.

There are plenty of evidence that WoW isn’t the only MMORPG or games with mounts. So, With the refrain of “dis no WOW go play WOW if u want mounts” is just plain wrong.

The only reason to not implement them is: “I don’t want it. So I absolutely don’t want other players to have them ever.”

And you’re not wrong in that, either. The anti-WoW hate is just the most prominent example. Just like some of those Asia-grinder MMOs cause a lot of anti-wing sentiment for some reason.

There are some gameplay considerations for saying no-mounts, but those can be worked around, and there have been dozens of ideas already generated.

With the refrain of “dis no WOW go play WOW if u want mounts”

Not that I’m a huge proponent of +mounts. I understand the -mounts side, but I see the benefit of including mounts, in a moderate fashion:
Not in cities.
Not in WvW or PvP. (WvW needs something else for speed boosts, but that’s for an entirely different thread.)
Speed boost no greater than perma-Swiftness or near perma-Swiftness. Perhaps passive +25%.
Base mount available in game, not cash shop.
Mount swiftness has a cast time of 2-3 seconds.
Any combat effect dismounts. This includes evasion or falling damage.
No combat effects on mounts. No “jousting” except maybe as a toy/costume brawl skill.

I think 3.5 is actually one of the worst balanced versions of D&D, because it’s just so completely overloaded with stuff. Pathfinder is a lot closer to what that system should have been as an evolution of what they had before.

…Accusations of D&D overloaded “with stuff”. …And Pathfinder isn’t.
Lawd, rescue me.

Anyway, back on the rails, the issue of ‘healing’ or ‘support’ in GW2 isn’t so much that HP itself is a problem, but that there are weak stats in the defensive realm. The issue is compounded by active defenses rewarding twitch/skillful play. It’s a good thing, but those stats sagging in importance is a symptom of lacking good design.

While an HP-related scaling-benefit would be a suitable reward for skilled play, it really wouldn’t give much power to those who focus on defense stats. Vitality and Healing Power need suitable boosts, nearly multiplicative, to compete with the benefit of stacking Power/Ferocity/Precision. It’s why a few forumites are calling for the abolition of Healing Power entirely and rolling it up into Vitality.

It’s very muddled, and it can’t decide what it wants to do. I have a bow, and the skills are.. okay. I’m not wow’d by them. The traits mostly support the longbow, but the other half of the spec wants, so badly, to be melee.

Traps. I had several holy kitten moments while using them. I like them for their potency. I hate them for their melee focus. At the same time, I want to dive in with these traps, Wings of Whatever dive in with a healbomb, set traps, and swing for the fences with my greatsword.

But the spec is at odds with itself because of the longbow, and its minor traits try to support it too much, so not using longbow feels like a waste.

Celestial gear, the timegate

I think they should make Charged Quartz Crystals not account bound and can be sold on the TP. This would be like how damask and such are handled ie, paying a premium to go around the time gate.

It needs some kind of premium, yes.

It makes me wonder why Mystic Coins aren’t used for more things like this. We only get a few at any given time, so supply is limited, but those who don’t care to bypass the time gates can sell to those who do want to buypass (pun intended :P) the them.

WoW did something sort of similar. The “create special craft item” recipe on 24-hour cooldown was relatively easy to do. The “I want it now” recipe came with a later patch, and it cost a lot more in materials, including more of the original craft materials.

So, the “I want it now” crafting would probably be something like 35 quartz and a mystic coin plus some item from the mystic forge vendor. Buuut, that still wouldn’t stop the market from going insane as people buy up insane amounts of quartz. (But let’s do it anyway, I’d love to sell 500 quartz for 500 gold, mwahaha! ..ahem.)

As for vitality i think that is a discussion that deserves a thread all on it’s own.

Well that’s kinda what this was meant to be. i guess i didn’t title it very well

With Vitality and Healing Power being the two weakest stats, it’s worth talking about them in conjunction.

I do support the original notion that higher Vitality should mean easier healing (incoming). But it also means healing power needs to be more effective. At best, full gear raises healing effectiveness a mere 15-20%.
If Vitality and Healing both contributed to healing in some percentage way, there would be a definitive sense of growth with it.

Hrm, still thinking of numbers to throw at it. 2% outgoing heals per 100 Healing, and 1% incoming heals per 100 Vitality. Self heals would benefit from both, at that point. It’s more moving pieces to balance around, but it adds value to the stats that otherwise, well.. suck.

Ranger is a safer choice in most cases, but it has to wrestle with poor pet management and a lot of aggro from other players. I’m still not sure what I’m doing with them, actually. Their traits don’t seem well synergized, except for maybe two builds.

Thief is higher risk, higher reward, so if you want to feel awesome and witty for kicking much butt, it’s not a bad way to go. Pretty solid even without traits, and I enjoy mine when I play him.

Now look at clerics gear: classic trinity equip. You deal no damage but get good healing.

This unfortunately assumes Healing Power means a drop in the ocean compared to the base healing effects. 1500 healing power might get you +15 to +20% increase, depending on the skill.

And to get that, one must give up multiplicative growth in comparison. The only hope is that one’s Toughness rises to match, but Healing Power still lags behind.

While true, there are some ‘basic’ expressions and such that could be covered with emotes. Not just to get certain text, but animations, which I think is what the ‘more emote’ crowd is after.

I’ve considered this idea before, and I think it’d be great.

My favorite peeps in game design recently did a feature on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgbuWfGeG2o

It sounds like it’d be costly to produce, but with the right rewards attached, it could develop some highly replayable content.

But then they aren’t “healing” they are just a buff bot which kinda defeats the purpose because you aren’t giving people who enjoy healing a job (because they aren’t healing – they are just seeing green numbers instead of red). Healers like feeling like they saved someone or are critical to keeping the group up, your method of making it viable is based around them not needing to heal but just giving buffs.

You can still have that feeling of a clutch save, of supporting your team, of dragging your friends from the brink of death to victory, but you can’t do that just by healing because it’s impossible to design for that level of healing without making it mandatory.

If you specifically want to see big green numbers all the time, there are other games designed with that in mind for you to play. Guild Wars 2 is trying to do something different.

I’d say getting in that clutch heal is more satisfying in GW2 because it’s so rare. It’s not a job.

Healing in every other MMO:
Blue bar goes down. Green bars go up.
Oh, the whiny DPS stood in the fire again.
Tank’s dead. All wipe.
Yay.

‘Healing’ in GW2:
Big attack coming, blind on cooldown, throw protection.
Aw crap, field condi barrage, throw cleanses.
Ally has too much hate, stun/KD mob for breathing room.
Green bar too tiny, regen up, CC for more breathing room, throw support heal.
Man down! Critical decision: Risk rezzing or beat on mob to coax it away and let self-heal sort it out. Throw the insta-rez if you got it.

Support in GW2 just feels so much better, because you have more tools for more situations, instead of micro-managing little bars and occasionally blowing a valuable cooldown.

All of which has little to do with the topic’s origin. XD
I’m led to believe that having HP-proportional benefits is rolled into trait options. Those breakpoints are useful in PvP, not so much in PvE. If PvE mobs made use of traits like “do more damage to injured foes” like players have, that would be enough for healing to be more of a consideration.

Healer + Tank, ever a possibility?

OHKOs exist because of the very slow mob attack speed. If their damage wasn’t so high then nobody would ever be challenged in PVE. Increasing mob attack has been suggested nearly since release as a method to make the game more challenging, reduce damage, increase attack speed, reduce hit points, add self-healing skills, make mobs more player-like and PVE can really be more challenging and demanding.

Totes on board for that, really. Mob attack speed is probably the number one thing we could have as a game-end push for more build diversity.
Having more mob variation would be a good one as well. Most one them have one or two specialties and autoattack, fairly lackluster with the occasional annoying-ability spam.

A quick-and-dirty healing power fix

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

That’s why i propose folding the healing increase into vitality. At present, toughness provides an approximate average increase to health and healing effectiveness of 50% per 1000 points. Healing power doesn’t even come close to those numbers.
It admittedly is ineffective versus conditions, but conditions have a great many other counters. The only counters to direct damage are avoiding or blocking it, or mitigating it through toughness.

since vitality does provide a buffer against all damage types, a proportional increase to healing would be a bit too strong, but something in the order of 10% per 300 over base (33% per 1000) wouldn’t be excessive, i don’t think. This would put it at about the effacity of healing power at present.

To be honest, Vitality needs some help too. A mere 10 HP per point when the endgame HP numbers are in the 5 digits is really kind of slack. It’s a flat number that doesn’t scale for squat.
Maybe that’s just the warrior in me, though. Seeing my thief’s 11k kinda makes me cry. =P

So, yeah, I’d support quite a few of the following:

  • Roll Healing Power into Vitality. HealPow converts to some other useful attribute, boon duration, probably.
  • Add Healing Power to boon duration. 1% per 100 should be quite useful, far and above the slackness of Giver’s.
  • Change Healing Power to a percentage boost instead of independent scaling. 1% per 100, possibly even 2% per 100, would really give healing impact, and it would make tweaking individual healing skills easier.
  • Healing Power affects both incoming and outgoing heals.
  • Change water blast combo scaling for more dramatic healing power impact.

Healer may be, but with no tank to absorb the 1 hit kills the boss and mobs throw, its kind of pointless.

It’s another item that pushes the game to a ‘pure damage meta’. When the game’s irritating OHKOs are so prevalent, there’s little point in stocking up on defensive stats. Players should be punished for mistakes, but OHKOs are terrible for game design if you want a player to iterate and learn.

Add Chilli Pepper nodes to HoT maps.

So, just to (hopefully) annoy Obtena . . .

Advice 1:
Three Words: Map Closure Volunteer. You can hit lucrative spots such as the area around places like Terra Carorunda Waypoint (from the Brand to the Wall) multiple times in a short amount of time if you arrive a few minutes before a world boss event and harvest the area and then stick around after a world boss event ends. Maps will begin to close afterwards and typically you can get at least two jumps into the same map/area. Tonight for the heck of it I hit the area around Terra Carorunda three times – the haul was about 70 seasoned wood logs, 200 iron ore (shocking amount of iron ore actually), and a fair amount of kale (for Garlic Kale Sautee – goes for about 1 gold each on the TP), zucchini and herbs (mostly mint but at least 2 chili peppers). I would say at least 5 gold worth of materials collected in a fairly short time at a relatively relaxed and unhurried pace. Unfortunately, Ascalon lacks world bosses on a regular schedule so the Shatterer map is really the only one you can do this on to get chili peppers. I farm the area around that Waypoint but it may be that there are other herb patches that consistently show in certain locations on the map and you might be able to hit all of those in a short period of time to increase your chances of gathering chili peppers.

Advice 2:
This may or may not apply to chili peppers, but it is a general trend I’ve noticed. What herbs you get tend to be consistent on a map/in an area at a given point in time – that is what you harvest from herb nodes tends to be “streaky.” For example hitting the area around Terra Carorunda tonight I got mint pretty consistently. Sometimes hitting the herb patch south of the dungeon in Mt. Maelstrom will yield one herb pretty consistently such as cloves one day, vanilla beans the next. Same with the harvesting run on the east side of the Straits of Devastation – you know you may be your day if within the first three herb nodes you hit you get lemongrass.

Good luck – hope you crash the market on chili peppers and ruin Obtena’s day.

I can sort of confirm, if only for vanilla in Metrica Province. There’s an herb patch off the side of a building, adjacent to a small cliff. Go around the cliff, tuck next to the building, and it always gave me 3-5 vanilla. One might could assume some spots for chilis are the same way.

PvE/WvW/PvP players thoughts on cost of WTS?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

OP, I agree with you. It’s a waste of cash for a niche game mode, money that could go into paying a developer (or several) to actually make content. Y’know, that mysterious “endgame” the tryhards kew about? Yeah, that stuff.

Nevermind that our skills and traits get “balanced” around team PvP, which ends up falling flat elsewhere. Good roaming build in WvW? Enjoy it while you can, because that’ll get clipped because it’s “too good” in PvP.

So yeah, thinking about it, I’m severely irked that my money goes to support this extravagant waste that could be better spent updating the game and fixing the bugs so we finally feel we have a polished product instead of a 3-year beta.

Healer + Tank, ever a possibility?

GW2 was specifically designed to avoid the Trinity of Tank/Healer/DPS. If you want that you need to find another game because i highly doubt ANET will go against its core combat/philosophy.

It also had no tanks, it had body blocking….but GW1 did suffer from “LF prot/heal….2 hours later…LF prot 2go”

My favorite lol in a queue is “3dps lf tank/heal then gtg”
I had to question if those people understood how Trinity games work. So yeah, not feeling the urge to go back to Trinity gameplay.

Tonics to Outfits. I did a thread for it: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Suggestion-Tonics-to-Outfits/

They won’t push town clothes to the wardrobe, because of the different light/medium/heavy frames, but we can at least get our kittening dye channels and mobility back.
