“I’m finding companies should sell access to forums,
it seems many like them better than the games they comment on.” -Horrorscope.7632
By the tank-killed gods, ugh. That’s even more hideous up close. And it’s more “cloth” outfitting, too. Definitely a non-buy for me.
Looked at the picture a second time. Wow, that is really bad. I’ll have to see how this looks on my Charr, too. If it’s too terrible, I may be following you to Support.
Direct refund inquires to Support.
So.. making Town Clothes and the other clothing tonics into Outfits?
Noticing the trend in outfits, we’re seeing a lot of human-god inspired ones, so maybe we’ll get Asuran Colleges, Charr Legions, etc.
So, from a guildie:
“Is that a dagger in your pocket, or are you having clipping issues?” ;3
A post about nerfed banners and hammers. /sigh
Considering I use both, this highlights two of my biggest frustrations. Banner cooldowns are unacceptable right now, and the trait doesn’t cover it. Range got nerfed.
I’ve never been a fan of Merciless Hammer, because it’s pretty dull as a hammer trait. Significant damage boost, for the one hammer swing you get before the enemy is back on its feet. Backbreaker needs a significantly longer stun duration to make the trait work, unless you’re traveling with a WvW/PvP squad of lockdown party members.
The loyalty slots haven’t been sent out, if you are a deluxe/ult purchaser you have the 1 slot that came with the pack, and a beta slot (not the loyalty slot)
Yes, I’d contact A-net quickly about getting the 800 gems reimbursed. I’m glad everyone is getting theirs back! Go Go super CS A-net:)
I’m cool with the second slot, so I don’t need to contact support. Thanks for the update!
And, if we’re talking about QoL fixes in this thread, give me a way to turn off the little red indicator that tells me I have Hero Points to spend. If I do not want to spend the few points needed to complete the Minions skill line because minions are like kittens on a boar, I should not have to constantly see that red attention-getter in my peripheral vision. How about letting it stop prompting me if I open the interface and leave it as is?
Yes, please. Once I back out of that screen, kindly don’t remind me until I get more hero points, or until I have something else to spend them on. 100+ HeroP after filling out all my core lines makes the reminder really pointless.
Just checking in since I said I would report back when I received an answer to this issue. It took a few emails back and forth with support but I too have recieved the 800 gems in lieu of the 2nd character slot. Thanks Anet for your understanding of this situation and for the great customer support.
Are we supposed to be contacting ANet if we prepurchased? I was going to be patient about it, but one of my guildies already got the two slots for Ultimate, but I haven’t.
Yup. There are. They’re especially painful prevalent in Rata Sum and Black Citadel, drinking all day and making CW-worthy conversation. =P
Not to fault it. I’m a very avid roleplayer, and I have tons of characters in GW2 ready to go for that purpose. My guild has the occasional casual RP or story RP night, and it’s been fun.
Like someone said above, if you find the less-traveled areas, you might find some good ones to listen in (aka “lamping”). Or if there’s a good bar scene going, see if you can listen in. Sometimes RP groups have specific goals in mind, so you might want to whisper a player to see if it’s okay to jump in.
There is something I’ve noticed from having a fair number of alts. At least two of each class. Now that I get three full trait lines, I find myself overlapping their chosen traits. It’s hard to not justify going Illusions for Mesmer. They also killed my old death-punishment build (with intent, seemingly), which used a lot of lower traits.
I’m not ticked about it, per se, but I noticed it. I’ve since moved to an experimental blind/confu build which could be fun.
Something is definitely amiss. I just went through levels 23 and 25 and got no hero points.
It’s “normal” as I found out, to shoehorn your character in a specialization and unlock the skills the algorithm thinks you wanted they spent more HP then you had.
Meaning you have a “HP debt” which you’ll need to catch up to before you have HP you can actually use.
I’ve gain 6 lvls since the patch, the only new HPs I have are from challenges.
Yeah, I’d noticed that was the case from the bug report forum. I’m relieved, a little, that it should work out at the end, but I’m kinda peeved currently for having spirit weapons on my lowbie guard and earth instead of fire on my lowbie ele. :\
Something is definitely amiss. I just went through levels 23 and 25 and got no hero points.
About the warrior banners – I was linked to a livestream past broadcast where they intended to merge Inspiring Banners with Inspiring Battle Standard. Apparently they forgot about it…
So, yeah. That’s where it’s supposed to be.
Now the question is, how long is it going to take for them to remember to add that back in? xD
o_O That’s a relief! The warrior forums glanced at it, shook it off, and marched on, but I was still really annoyed.
But yeah, good luck on them remembering in short order. >_>
Aside and more toward your original post, there’s an element of the training system that bugs me. I hadn’t noticed until a little recently, because I’m floating mostly 80s at this point, but each trait has its own unlock. Not trait tier, but trait.
I’d rather they have grouped each tier and applied a blanket cost, rather than delaying parts of a tier behind other traits I probably won’t use. It’s a minor gripe, but it still feels wrong, similar to how some skill groups feel arranged haphazardly in order to make them linear.
I roam solo.
Just my mount and me.
o/’ I’ve been through the auctions on a mount with no name…
Yep that boon duration loss is pretty big. It’s made it so that strength runes are pretty much mandatory for warriors in groups, for example.
But considering the loss of attributes from stats, I’m not really sure what they could have done about the boon duration loss.
What borders on insulting about it is that some of the support lines in classes have a +boon duration embedded in the 2nd or 3rd minor trait. Other classes, like warrior, got completely abandoned on it.
My personal gripe is how banners were gutted, but.. eh. I could put up some strong words about it for the devs, but I’m willing to wait out this first wave of new decisions.
Being that this is an MMO, I’m sure they’ll revisit trait content. Eventually. I expect a lull of about 3 months before any big changes get made to them.
Dungeons don’t give you AP. High AP only indicates how much player spent facerolling story.
Time spent is bad indicator top. Simply because there is no punishment for being bad. You can’t learn to be good without game completely wrecking you from time to time. Sadly that’s what devs are trying to avoid.Agreed – but I’m willing to bet a person that has 3000 hours put into the game can’t be as bad as a person that only has 100-200. Even on their worst day.
how much will you bet?
I’m willing to wager a hundred gold.
…Because I know 6000 hour players with alt accounts. Judge them by their AP do not.
Also, comparing 3000 AP/hours has no basis for comparison between 100 AP/hours. A more appropriate basis for comparison is more like 2000 hours versus 6000 hours. Which, even then, is suspect. AP is bad, mkay?
Some QoL on items 2 and 3 would be nice.
And I wish more playtesting had happened. It’s not a knock on the specialization system, but the content within it that leaves a few things being lackluster or frustrating.
Some classes losing up to 30% boon or condition duration when those attributes were supposed to be rolled into the trait lines is a terrible blow to recreating builds. And yeah, at least one of my builds got stung hard or destroyed by some of the changes. I don’t blame the specialization system so much as oversights by the dev team.
Or actual design decisions by the dev team. The few times I look at the traits and go “Aw man! I wish I could have both!” I actually grin, because the game is actually challenging me to make a decision. And that decision isn’t permanent, so it’s okay to explore.
But yes, making builds easier to compile/recompile and not having to decipher black & [color] images would certainly make swapping traits less irritating.
Everybody? Nah.
I’m much more ticked about losing up to 30% boon/condi duration, which weren’t rolled into the trait lines, as was suggested.
And yet, I don’t get to hear my mantras every time I charge them. ;__;
(Bug fix?)
Want sub? Buy gems every month. Mission accomplished.
I’ve spent way more money on this than I had any right to.
I can never understand the love for Rata Sum. The crafting stations are spread across each point, only the bank and TP are close. At least The Grove has all the crafting in one local with the bank and TP very close by.
You all must be focusing on a service or activity I don’t regularly use/do if you think Rata Sum is great.
If you’re not crafting, Rata Sum is great. Bank and Trading Post right next to each other.
If you’re crafting, Grove is probably most convenient, and so is Black Citadel.
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Hero_point
There’s a chart on the page (click Show on the blue field) that will detail how much you get and when. Starts of with about 5 points every other level, then grows to 18 per odd level before 80.
I’m all for streamlining rewards so they come in as few clicks as possible. They snuck in an encumbered status marker for when your bags are full. Hopefully that paves the way for an “open all bags” procedure where any excess is thrown into that hovering bag space that exists until you contend with all your crap.
(If that’s ineloquent, eh. Caffeine required. :P)
And what if the raid simply includes cool weapon and armor skins? Or an achievement?
then he/she will be mad because not
goodguild enough to acquire the skins.
Remember, it’s a group effort.

Meanwhile, I’m trying to remember the last dungeon/raid mechanic that was actually interesting. There’s a lot of ways it can go wrong, or at least be unfun. Mechanics should make use of all three soft roles in some fashion. Monolithic bosses are bad.
Damage is obvious. Death is the best status effect. But a decent raid boss is going to find ways to stall burst phases and force damage dealers to contend with damage. Cone attacks threaten range, radial attacks threaten melee, retaliation, reflects, etc. Survival phases like Mai Trin’s cannons make sure that everyone is paying attention.
Support is mostly ingrained. Boons will flow like water, so enemies should be finding occasional ways to deal with them. Boon removal, stealing, and corruption will keep things in line, so it’s possible to have a phase where something has to be done to negate the mechanic.
Boss stealing your boons? Necro, lol. (Though that’s a bit specific.)
Maybe there’s an item in the room that enables the boss’s boon removal. Send a DPS squad to mangle it when it spawns.
So long as a boss is countering the team’s 25-Might-Stacks-LOL-Win strategy, it keeps the boss’s total HP down anyway.
…I almost passed this section without using the word “healing.” Nifty. But yes, damage is going to be prevalent in a good raid. Hard to balance, but self-heals should be sufficient, with actual healers giving the team much needed breathing room. I’ve come to find that knowing when to disengage is critical in some situations, balancing damage with survival if things go to kitten.
Control is a kittene, and it’s why I say monolithic bosses don’t work. Maybe that will be different with the Defiance Bar, but I’m not referring to just hard CC. If the boss just sits in the middle doing nothing, cripple/immobilize and traps are made irrelevant. On the one hand, most monoliths also tend to drop weakness/blind/vulnerability durations by a significant amount. Hardest on the blind, as it’s easy to spam but can shut down an encounter completely. Weak/Vuln at least have a dozen or so people who can pump it out constantly, so that actually keeps them engaged. Ish.
A good raid fight is going to find ways to split up the zerg in some fashion, keeping members busy on small objectives while the rest burn the boss. Or avoid the boss until it’s exposed. The slime boss from Thaumanova is a sort of rudimentarily decent example.
So, moving from “oh, nifty concept” boss idea to actually engaging the players is going to take some careful thought.
Yeah, unfortunately, unless you’re careful about joining a party, the elitists are going to qq over not getting their candy 5 seconds sooner.
Do yourself a favor and look for the kinder keywords:
full clear
all welcome
non-meta
no speedrun
It should save you some trouble, but inevitably, some people will either come troll those groups too, or some quickjoin isn’t going to read the description and throw a fuss.
I think my idea a few posts up answers all your questions. You have 4 seperate 5-man groups tackling different mechanics therefore allowing all types of builds to participate and in the end require a 20-man raid to finish.
Oh, wasn’t calling you out specifically, just a thing to keep in mind for people tossing ideas out.
What you suggested recalls Marionette, which was generally well received.
My mind turns toward logistics again, and maybe the hiring of the raid designer goes more in hand with guild halls. They’re a controlled space, and raid content is usually more appropriate for coordinated guilds anyway. So maybe the new guild challenges are …raids? Could be interesting.
That’s some serious Cocoon looking kitten, right there.
..yup, just carbon dated myself. XD
I managed to somewhat break even on cost. I ended with more ecto and less cash, but the difference approximated what I might have spent buying them from the trading post. =P
I quit while I was theoretically ahead.
Anet has kindly given me plenty of time to work through my recently acquired steam summer sale game backlog.
Probably poe, but also correct! Or poe. >.> <.<
I’m appreciating the lull for what it is, a no-pressure break from playing the game for hours on end.
…
Yeah, no. The dungeons are.. mediocre and they don’t really make use of the freedom of 5 independent agents as a group. Those aren’t ever going to get better, because ANet has no will to redesign them or fix their numbers. Whatev.
I was pointing out two things:
What I’m hoping from the potential for raids are suitably clear tasks that split up the zerg (if there is one). Fight designs that present more challenge than stack-and-smack, so that survival is a real issue. I recall one of the old Living Story fights, actually. Boss would chuck toxic puddles that did unavoidable damage to the room. The party member with the heart on his head would attract a blob that would eat them. He didn’t do his job, party wiped. It was irritating on my squishy thief when other people ignored it, so I wouldn’t say have random assignment like that, but the idea is there.
Beyond that, I can never get a straight answer about what is both ‘challenging’ and ‘balanced’ for content. Anything that has one-hit KOs isn’t balanced, nor does it really present an opportunity to actually learn an encounter. Requiring a specific mechanic shuts out other classes and excludes them from content. And so on.
Made a few humans, since those names would be easy. 3/4 are original!
Jace Galenbrook, elementalist. I originally had him as Sekai Suiton to symbolize mastery of the world’s elements (Arcana) with a focus on water and healing. It was way too weeaboo, so I changed it to something less “Cantha” and more appropriate to Tyrian humans. Jace is a name I’m fond of, and it so happens to mean ‘healer,’ so it works. Galenbrook as a family name is suitable for a noble man of calm demeanor.
Scarlet the Tease, mesmer. Made way before some other dirty birch ruined the name, Scarlet took the street-rat/circus story paths. Her street name implies her being intentionally provocative, and of course, her mesmer profession makes her a ‘tease.’
Benedict Hale, guardian. Something of a self-insert character from one I played in a LARP many years ago. Another healer, go figure. At the LARP, everyone called me Ben, short for Benedict, short for Benediction, as in “to give,” and “Hale” meaning health. I just wish I had a giant wolf club to bean people with when I was larping. Hm.
Phil Amon, mesmer. Why make two mesmers? One for more serious work (and boy does Scarlet put her kitten to work), and one for summoning phantasms. The name, obviously based Greek myth.
But bonus points for putting the clues together!
A sensible thought, and Vitality is another of the “waste” stats on gear in a lot of cases. If you have sufficient toughness and mitigation/sustain (dodge/blind/heals), you don’t need vitality.
Overall, the Toughness/Vitality/Healing Power trifecta is in a weird place in comparison to Power/Precision/Ferocity. PPF is multiplicative in growth, but defense stats sit on more of a Toughness x (Vit + HealPow) combination.
I’ve seen some of the new traits enhance this, adding 1% Healing per 100 Vit or HealPow, but Vit and Healing Power need more synergy.
Or, like Jaxom said, retool the bases and coefficients to improve healing power, maybe normalize them by cooldown times.
Oh, oh! We could do it like WoW and have fights where you get mind control debuffs that make you exploded dead after a minute of staring at the screen. Those were always fun. Guaranteed never-solo!
Snark aside, there’s an issue of grouping that could make the concept of raids very difficult. There’s parties, maps, and squads. Squads require a commander, which means paying for an expensive luxury item. Parties are limited to 5, unless they manage some special classification. 10-man maps would probably be ideal, but it’s prone to similar party size complications, needing taxis, and that doesn’t prevent strays from strolling in.
So, unfortunately, it’s 5-man raids or zerg, at the moment. Factor that into these grand designs as recommendations. And, yeah, lore appropriate. They’ll be zero traction if there’s nothing to connect it to the story at large.
Eep. I expect you’ll get flamed for this, but some people do like it. Like my guildmaster.
I personally don’t care for it, but it does get me doing things with the guild, so it’s more of a bonus than just a few chests.
And yet, double fractal is better than babyzone event completion or boss clockwatching by a mile.
On inspirations, I generally refuse to “steal” things from established intellectual properties. It’s always felt lazy or fanboy/girlish to me. I prefer lore-appropriate names, but often times I can’t help but pun. So, I might as well start off with the list of sins. >_>
My main, Spaiten Malus, is born of the sheer joy I had when I played the beta, and hammer warrior was hilarious to me. He’s since gotten head-canon. Actual name: Spaiten Maluscrack, Malus warband, Blood Legion, so named for breaking his hammer over his former legionnaire’s head.
Irene Sheph, Asura engineer. I intended for her to be my cook/jeweler, but she’s a cutesy lady in pink and bows (and now a Chef Outfit :P), so Iron Sheph would have been uncute. Now she runs around flambe’ing things with a flamethrower.
Venus Nightshade, Sylvari necromancer and all-around try-hard. I balk at deepdarkemo names, so using her as a poe during her leveling experience amused me greatly. Tackiest, brightest Easter pastels on a Wintersday Outfit? Yup. Danced the mess out of waiting for Boar to spawn.
And then there’s, Fhorrz, my Asura guardian. Specializing in symbols and consecrations, he lays protective fields for his allies and thwarts his foes. He refers to them as Fhorrz’s Fields.
(edited by Rauderi.8706)
Ruined? That’s drastic.
But alas, I regret the loss of Postern Ward. I’m baffled as to why they didn’t keep multiple crafting areas.
Not a huge loss. Rata Sum has all the banking stuff very close, and it’s close to Maguuma Wastes, so it’s a frequent stop. Crafting is close-ish, but nonsensibly placed.
Black Citadel has all the crafting within reasonable distance, and the trading post is near enough to karma weapon/laurel vendors and a waypoint.
Divinity’s Reach is a decent choice as well, if you just need banking done. Some craft stations are close enough as well.
The Grove is meh. It’s vertical map flow doesn’t fit with map tools well enough for easy transit, and all the waypoints are stacked nearly on top of each other. Banking and crafting are awkwardly placed and on opposed sides of the waypoint.
Want to talk about ruined, though? Hoelbrak’s been ruined since the beginning of the game. The bank/trading post are way too far from anything else, including wayponts, crafting areas are a jump (except for leatherworking), and there’s that idiot right next to the waypoint. You know the one. You pop in, then uncomfortably hug the wall until you can make your escape. Don’t go to Hoelbrak if you can help it.
The Lion’s somethingoranother inn for the karka killing Princess collection only opens at night. …Yeah, cuz that’s fun. In 3 years, it’s the first time day/night has mattered to me.
All my character names are made from using a phone keyboard letters and my social insurance number as the digits! That way no one will have the same name as me.
One of the more clever things I’ve come up with
But then people can guess your SSN… >_>
I can already guess you don’t have a 0 or 1, unless those are spaces. :P
Clever, though!
For example, the end of the road could be a town where you can buy all sorts of crafting materials for a really cheap price, but there’s a daily limit per player and you have to carry it back following the same road you took to reach the town. If you wp before reaching the map’s exit, you lose all the goods you bought/collected.
That’s an interesting mechanic, actually. I don’t know if it’s right for GW2, necessarily, but I’m certainly intrigued.
Like, say, you buy a box in the starting area, and if you can trade it in to the NPC (i’unno, some Unique Exotics expedition) for special rewards, but if you’re defeated, they break and you’d have to buy them all over again. And scattered around the zone would be special nodes with rarer materials, along with a special currency to trade in for venturing out.
Last Boss being killed in the first Week of an MMO Expansion, this isn’t going to end well.
Instead we’ll get a cliffhanger after 4 days in the first Week of an MMO Expansion. And people are still going to complain there’s no content. In fact, that will be worse as it will highlight just how little substance there is to HoT.
For pity’s sake people! You paid $60 for ~30 explorable areas (counting cities) in the base game. And now ANET is asking you to pay $50 for a THIRD of that MAYBE. And you’re perfectly fine with it. I just don’t understand.
Now that I think about it, yeah. YEAH! Going from WoW classic’s 30+ zones to only 6 in Burning Crusade was such a ripoff! The hurt still hasn’t healed!
Or, y’know, maybe that’s just how expansions work. I’m not sure about the original Guild Wars franchise and how much content those added, but looking at normal MMO progression, adding about 6-8 zones is appropriate. Including a cost of 40-60$. Given this trend has been around for well over a decade, I find it surprising people are confused.
TAKE HEED! I HAVEN’T TAKE LEAVE OF MY SENSES!
..why, no, I’m not letting that one go until that NPC gets eaten by a Mordrem wolf.
The notion of challenge zones/modes has been bantered about at length. Inevitably, it also becomes a discussion of rewards. Hard content for hard’s sake doesn’t get played.
I’m not opposed to the idea of a hardmode zone, though. It’d be interesting for small parties and guilds to chase objectives for special currency to get things like armor skins and the like. Sort of a harder Silverwastes.
Let the list begin:
Male Norn Ranger: Bardy Belzebuson
Bardy is my RL last name and Belzebuson is a reference to my GW1 main and also my account nameFemale Norn Mesmer: Valkiria Ravenkin
Valkiria is Valkyrie with a more portuguese spelling twist, Ravenkin is a nordic way to say that she is devote of the raven spirit.Male Asura Thief: Barddy
Well … it is just my last name with an extra “d” to fit the asura name convention.Female Asura Engineer: Oogah
That is quite nice, I tried to name her like the GW1 asura Oola and of course it was taken, then I changed the “l” for “g” and it was also taken, so I added a “h” in the end and there is it.Male Sylvari Elementalist: Baridy
I read somewhere that Barid is Bard in celtic so I just added an “y” in the end to fit the Sylvari name convention and also resemble my last name.Female Sylvari Guardian: Bardine
I was lacking creativity and just made a female version of BardyMale Charr Warrior: Belz Ironsoul
Belz is part of Belzebu and sound roman enough imo, and since my warrior is from the Iron Legion Ironsoul fit the name convention nicely.Female Human Necromancer: Raquel Bardy
Well … this one is also quite interesting, my RL name is Rodrigo Bardy and my mother said that they picked my name before they knew what sex I would be when she was pregnant so they picked 1 male and 1 female name, Raquel Bardy would have been my name if I was born femaleMale Human Guardian: Ahiru Darkwing
This is my placeholder for a tengu name and also my silver doubloon farmer, Ahiru is duck in Japanese, and tengu name convention is usually <Short Japenese name> <Avian part + Adjective> so I made a reference to Darkwing DuckThose are my toons.
I get the feeling you like bards.
I approve~
As it stands now it feels like the game is PvE with PvP tacked onto the side, being very controlled.
That was the actual intent. So it should feel that way.
I’d wonder if ANet had some people on staff who worked during Burning Crusade. WoW peeps learned very early that you don’t put your big-bad right out front in an expansion. It’ll be dead in a week, and the hardcore kiddos will fuss like nobody’s business. That looks bad for a game.
So, they’ll likely space it out, Living Story style, and limit the chapters to expansion-only.
Bad because it led to them killing Maim the Dissilusioned…
It’s a Master trait now. >_>
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Maim_the_Disillusioned
The trait overhaul has completely revitalized the game for me.
I used to run an Engineer with traits in four lines, but now I get the functionality I was getting before in three (of course, it helps that it was a WvWvW Condi Roamer build). Overall, it’s easier for me to select traits when I can just mouse over them, rather than have to click several traits to see if they work with my build.
Furthermore, they removed some terribly useless traits and merged others to make them stronger.
I see that most of the QQ comes from people having to make hard choices when it comes to their traits… well boo freakin’ hoo—decisions in games should have consequences. It’s not like it’s hard to change your build if it isn’t working out.
First, +1 to you.
The system itself is a solid solution. It provides clarity for players, better design space for the developers, and allows for more lateral growth (more specializations).
I do feel the railroading of Adept/Master/Grandmaster hurts build diversity a bit, but at the same time, it does force choices. Games need to make choices matter if upper-level gameplay is going to matter.
The content of the system still needs a bit of work, but that’s all balancing and making sure the compressed traits are still getting sufficient use.
I do find having multiple ‘builds’ end up re-using several options, but I’m also exploring new combinations (like a Blind mesmer I hope to try out soon). Do the warrior nerfs suck? Yup. Not happy about losing chunks of my support build (banner cooldown/radius, boon duration = 0…), but I’m eager to see how I can make up for the differences.
If you’re a melee type of person, go Warrior first. Good survivability, plenty of weapon selections, decent support.
If you’re more of a caster type, Elementalist rocks, but be prepared for a higher learning curve. Very powerful, versatile class.
If you’re a pet type, prepare to be disappointed by Ranger. :P
Being more on the ranged/pet dps scale in most MMOs, I’m surprised that I found Warrior enjoyable and an excellent starting point.
