Please refrain from the Marvel-isation of characters.
If nobody ever really dies, it doesn’t mean anything. Cheating death all the time weakens any narrative. And if it does happen and someone doesn’t conveniently come back from the dead, players will riot.
better not go down that route.
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
Not that exact same one, I believe, but the new Gallant rifle looks pretty similar (BLT skin).
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
That or buying a boxed version from a retailer. That way, you really can’t accidentally attach it to your account.
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
Why is your version rated and mine is not ? oO Nevermind, I saw the “provisional”.
Anyway, is there any official info on when the character slots will be added? I remember Gaile mentioning it will take a while, but did she say how long?
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
1) That used to be the case, not sure why they took it out. Probably complaints from people who die a lot doing JPs. While some are laughably easy and take less time than any other daily, even if you have two left feet, in a manner of speaking.
2) Mhm. Not a fan of that one. I’m a klutz in RL and in the game, I like that I can sometimes get a little help with difficult parts, or assist others when I’m in the JP with my mesmer. There are hard JPs for added difficulty where you can’t simply port to the end, like Vizier’s Tower, Hidden Garden or Dark Reverie. Isn’t that basically what you want? More of that?
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
What do you mean, we can’t have them? We do have them. They just don’t give any kind of speed bonus. That’s what speed buffs are for, for short distances, and everything else is connected by waypoints. It’s a different system they chose to use, one that doesn’t require mounts to make map exploration and travel bearable (I’m still not over that kitten blimp from WoW -.-).
I don’t get why the lack of “real” mounts is such a horrible thing for some. If it’s about collecting cool stuff, GW2 has different kinds of collections. The “coolest” just require work instead of just throwing gold at other people, like Luminescent armour, or the Liadri mini.
And if it’s about getting somewhere fast, again, that’s what waypoints are for. There will never be an MMO that has everything.
Besides, HoT will have enemies with mounts, maybe, some day, we’ll get to ride a dragon after all^^
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
Aren’t mini’s kind of silly anyway? Why do you want a mindless miniature person following you around? Especially in combat.
Do not mock the Cat of Darkness! :O
Minis are a kind of fluff that many players like. Sure, a pet rock is silly, but my necro has a very good reason to have one (doesn’t talk back and doesn’t die or get maimed in lab explosions like fleshy krewemates). And having an army of different cats following my characters is just plain adorable :>
It’s annoying that I have to uncheck the box all the time. Stealthing them when you stealth, like ranger pets, would be the easiest option. Please?
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
I’m still amazed that people obviously don’t read, like, anything in the game and then complain about missing warnings. The skritt item’s description essentially says that you’ll get random amounts of junk. Miyani, when talking to her about the forge, which any new player would have to do to find out about the way it works, will give you this line:
“Zommoros offers the chance to improve items, but he can be wildly inconsistent. You may get a wondrous item. Or, you may get garbage.”
That is a very clear warning. It literally says you might get garbage. How is that not telling you that this is a gamble?
Guys, please, just… read, okay? T_T
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
Lion’s Arch is no longer a pirate city, but a sea-themed disneylandish clown town. better`ve left it ruined or gave it to Scarlet
Couldn’t agree more…
Seaworld!
Only thing missing is some speedos and bathsuits so we can walk around properly.
Coming soon to a gem shop near you: Faren’s Speedo, for your pleasure on a perfect day at the beach

Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
The beta only let you play in certain parts of the map. And this makes it sound like most, if not all maps will have the three layers.
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
Agh, I must’ve skipped right over that^^
But then it wouldn’t be a proper war, would it?
Don’t know, it might be an option, if it’s opt-in only. But maybe an “Invite to duel” function would be a better start, to see how this affects the open world. And then somewhere down the line introducing guild alliances and wars, with complementing functions.
…okay, it kind of sounds cool in reality, too
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
Open-world PvP has been asked for for a while now, and as far as I know, there are no plans to ever make this possible.
This particular suggestion is only fun for those who want this type of thing. Now if you’re not a PvPer and don’t want anything to do with that, but your guild leadership decides to wage war on another guild, you’re dragged into this and can’t opt out. That doesn’t sound so fun anymore.
Besides, what happens during world events, say Svanir Shaman, when everyone huddles around the boss, and everyone throws down AoE like crazy? It would kill enemies, and their AoE would kill you. That’s ample opportunity for griefing.
Another one for the pile of “Sounds fun on paper, has tons of holes in reality”.
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
Yes i have completely missed the point that you are high class US citizens for whom 50 bucks isnt a half of monthly salary. I shut up in shame.
Way to make assumptions.
Besides, your problem doesn’t seem to be the price/content ratio, it seems to be the price itself. Which was not what your first post said.
Go team up with the others who think 50$ is too much. You’re not alone in this. For now, that’s how things are, but maybe that changes. But you might want to rethink making passive-aggressive posts about things when you mean something entirely different.
Edit: CobaltSixty isn’t much better, though ôO I hope you do realise how ignorant that sounds.

I’d add a small caveat to the RockPaperShotgun guide: Zerker might not be THE best option anymore after the change, especially since you can’t quickly respec for different stats anymore. Wait a bit until things settle down before you decide what to get.
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
It also costs the same as a pair of jeans. I do not want a new pair of jeans. Nor do I want ESO. I want HoT. As does probably everyone who bought it/will buy it.
Your point is… weird.

“If you purchased the core game from a third party, we are unable to provide a refund. However, if you registered the core game between January 23, 2015 and June 16, 2015 and upgrade it by prepurchasing any Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns edition before Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns‘ launch, we will add one additional character slot to your Guild Wars 2 account.”
From the community address. According to this, you’ll get the slot if you upgrade via any means.
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
i noticed you never answered the question of why you used it 4+ times
because i was thinking this npc was the same of the olders, where sometime you should lose a bit, and sometime you will gain a bit more, so i was thinking ok, now i lost, next time i will take back what i lost with a little amount of gain
now i’ll make u a question, why this npc is inside the game? what is his purpose?
It’s a (really obvious) gold sink. It’s probably programmed to give out a little less on average than it receives (just like slot machines). It’s something that every MMO ever needs, or its economy will become horribly broken very quickly. The mystic forge probably ate ten times more items in terms of gold value than it spit back out (or maybe a hundred times more, going by my own personal luck with that thing). Same principle.
The problem is this: You did not think before you acted. While this sucks for you, personally, and is a very human thing, it’s kind of on you that you spent your entire fortune on this NPC. If you immediately go for the expensive thing without even knowing what it does… Who does that? We have this nice little saying “Gier frisst Hirn” – literally “greed eats brain”. That’s what happens when you don’t stop to think for a minute before buying a pig in a poke.
It’s a game. While it’s supposed to be fun, its function is not to think for you. If you buy a 50g dagger at the auction house that’s entirely useless because your brain went “expensive = awesome”, that’s not the game’s fault, it’s human error.
One could argue for a better description of this NPC’s services. But.
“Double-click to destabilize and gain globs of ectoplasm and valuable junk items in random amounts.”
The item’s description literally tells you that the outcome is random and going to be junk. Granted, it says valuable, too, but the term “junk” should be a dead giveaway, in addition to the gambl-y nature of the entire description. That is your warning.
The fact that you “lost everything” is rotten luck; I bought a few cheap ones and came out even, then stopped because eh, not worth it. Buying one and losing, then blowing your entire fortune on this thing? Your own fault.
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
I’m about 99% sure they did not make a new personal story for a single new class.
Your PS has nothing to do with your class, anyway. It’s never mentioned. It’s first and foremost a racial story. So, let me correct myself, they’d have to make five new personal stories – one for each race. That sounds like a lot of work for little to no reason.
So probably yes, you will “have” to do the normal PS steps. Though you don’t have to do anything. If that’s a part of the game you’re not interested in, skip it.

“[…] should you decide to pre-purchase Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns from our website or in-game store any time through July 31, 2015.”
I read that as the day the pre-purchase period ends, since it wouldn’t make much sense to only offer refund halfway thorugh the pre-purchase period and then stop. Might be I’m wrong here, but if you want to pre-purchae one way or another, better safe than sorry, I suppose.
If they’re actually going for an anniversary release date, it makes sense.

Can I pre-purchase through my favorite retailer?
Yes. Starting on June 23, 2015, you’ll be able to pre-purchase boxed and digital editions of Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns from our official retail partners. You may also be able to pre-order through retailers, but there is no official pre-order program and pre-purchasing is the only way to receive the benefits of our pre-purchase program, including access to all of the Beta Weekend Events.
Seeing as all pre-purchased versions now get an extra character slot, as long as they are registered before July 31, you will get the slot if you buy from a retail parter. IF that retail partner offers pre-purchase, make sure that’s what you’re buying.
It’s odd to see this tiny “list” of retailers for the US. I bought it at (German) Amazon two days ago and got an email today that it should be in the mail on Friday or Saturday (provided our mailman isn’t on strike by then. Again). Usually, whatever we have on Amazon, every other country’s Amazon has, too. But hey, you get to buy a pink t-shirt with the HoT logo^^
Maybe there’s a problem with shipping to the US retailers? As far as I can tell, that’s the only country affected by the mysteriously vanishing retail partners.
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
As far as I can tell, your newly-converted hero points got auto-spent in the lines that are connected to your previous build, but when you didn’t have a trait line or skill in use, it didn’t get activated and the points stayed in the pool. On a level 80 character, the amount of hero points you have left should be enough to reskill whatever you unlearned, plus whatever excess you had before the conversion. So far, this has proven true for all my characters, though some have said they didn’t get enough hero points.
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
It’s not limited to norn and humans, my asura sometimes look like they are glowing weirdly, too. Dark red hair becomes light pink. Not quite the look I was going for with my necromancer…
It’s been happening on and off for a while now, and doesn’t seem to influence anything in the actual game, so meh.
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
Just for the record, whoever designed this is an evil genius. Brilliant, but insane.
This is terrifying and awesome.
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
That’s a valid decision, as long as everyone’s on the same page (which we now are, but only after the statement).
If one pays the stated price for every individual expansion, they do so to experience them right from the beginning. If one does not care about waiting, one can wait until they get cheaper.
It’s like going to the cinema. I can go watch a film once for 8€ (13€ in 3D, so… most films these days, really). Or I can wait six months and buy the DVD/Bluray to watch it as often as I’d like, decreasing the price per viewing significantly, but forcing me to wait longer. My decision. It depends on what I want.
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
It does not become a regular slot. Beta slots are for beta only. You’ll get two normal slots with Deluxe and Ultimate plus the temporary beta slot.
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
Legendary Collector doesn’t give a title tho.. the achievement “Twice-Told Legend” does.
This. Go look that up under your titles, OP, two Quips should get you title and bragging rights for that one.

That’s obvious, guys, really.
He’s in an alternate dimension that only he can see, devoid of life and just waiting to turn into a living nightmare, and the only fragile thread tethering him to reality is his friend, faithfully trying to bring him back to the other side.
Jeez, get your lore straight.
…wait, this isn’t Silent Hill?
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
[Possible spoilers ahead]
.

.
There is at least one more “Pale” Tree (probably not called that). It’s hardly a spoiler since this information has been in the game for three years now. Though this shows who the obsessed sylvari players are^^
The principle of the Pale Tree could be found all over Tyria, though the outcome might not be the same. “Our” sylvari are the way they are because of Ronan and Ventari. So depending on who, if anyone, “raised” those other sylvari, they will be vastly different kinds of beings.
Might be we’ll encounter a new faction like the Nightmare Court in the Maguuma Wastes, though this time flipped around – the splinter faction are the “good guys”, broken off from a larger group that still belongs to another tree, only this tree is under the influence of Mordremoth. Actually, I’d be really surprised if we don’t get to see Malyck’s tree.

OP, if it’s really that big a deal for you, buy HoT from Amazon (or any of the other retail partners). As I understand it, the refund won’t apply to those games, but it’s still considered a pre-purchase.
And doesn’t the pre-purchase period end on July 31st? So waiting until August will only get you a normal edition without any extras, if you can even buy it until launch?

Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
How will the additional character slot work if I preorder at GameStop or Amazon tomorrow? I really want the boxed edition, but I’ll order it digitally to get the character slot though. It’d be a shame to have to go without the box though
You HAVE to pre-purchase from Best Buy or Gamestop. You have to pay in full. If you pre-order you don’t get any of the bonuses, including Beta Access or the exclusive Title.
You will get the code on your receipt, and you must apply that code to your account before HoT launch.
Can you source this for me?
I’m guessing Jordo is seeing different retailers? This is what the FAQ say:

Note that the Ultimate edition is only available for purchase in-game and via buy.guildwars2.com. Additionally, there won’t be an option to upgrade to the Ultimate edition later if you decide to purchase the Standard or Deluxe edition.
It says “pre-purchase” along with the retail partners (as listed for your country), and at least German Amazon lists HoT as pre-purchase as well, as opposed to pre-order. I guess (hope) this means that buying the boxed version will still get us a key we can tie to our account in time to get those bonuses.
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
Hopefully our german retailer Saturn will have it in stock. Games at Gamestop are 99% of the time more expensive than anywhere else. We don’t have Best Buy and Newegg (never heard of Newegg)
Unfortunately, Saturn is not on their “Officail Retailers”, so you may or may not get the the pre-purchase bonuses.
Newegg is a website.
www.newegg.com
It is. You need to select the appropriate country (Germany, in this case) to see the retailers for your specific location. We don’t see Newegg.

I’d like to know as well.
Yes, I’m someone who’s been easily pacified by both the statement and the character slot. Now I’d just like to know what this means for the boxed editions? I like putting stuff on my shelves, but wouldn’t the boxed edition, even if ordered/purchased now, arrive too late to be registered in time? Because that’d be sort of a bummer for collectors.
I mean, HoT won’t be patched in until launch anyway, so would retailers be able to hand me the boxed version (a.k.a. my HoT key) before the launch date so I can register the key and get the slot?
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
To make things simple I’ll say it this way – Anyone in the guild could own the expansion, but of those people who do, 1 would need to be in or placed in the Guild Leader rank to attune to the crystal for the claiming.
I am more interested what happens to those members who do not own the expansion. If a guild has enough people with HoT to claim the guild hall. Will non HoT member have access it? Will they have access to the small HQ only?
As my understanding no article as of yet seperates guild members who own the expansion from those who do not. They keep referring to the guild owning the expansion/Guild Hall.
This is what I’d like to know as well. Right now, my usual way of dealing with marketing kitten-ups like this one (i.e. not buying HoT) is very much conflicting with my desire to buy it anyway and go play with my guild. Well kitten.
Add this to the growing pile of things we still don’t know about HoT while being expected to blindly buy it anyway, and it does not make this situation any better.
(Honestly, I love the guild halls, and at this point, an open letter/commentary from Anet addressing this issue in a way that makes me feel like I’m still a customer they value instead of a cash-cow who’s too old to be milked properly anymore would probably convince me to buy this at launch, regardless of the price tag. Now? I’m already kittened that I probably won’t be able to go with my guildies to claim the hall…)

Maybe we need an analogy here.
Imagine walking into a hardware store to buy some nails. The shopkeeper asks you if you already own a hammer, because what are nails without one?
You answer that you already purchased a hammer from him a few years ago. The shopkeeper says: “Great! So you don’t need one.” He then tells you about the sale they have now, where if you didn’t already own a hammer you would get one for free with the nails. But since you already have one you just get the nails for the same price a new customer would get the nails plus a new hammer. In this scenario, would you be completely kittened-off and demand either a discount on the nails or a new hammer for free with your nails as a returning customer as well?
Flawed logic. It would be a valid point if they offered the extra hammer to me aswell. But they don’t. A new customer will get nails AND hammer, but when the clerk see my face he says “hey, I sold you a hammer 3 years ago, so no free hammer for you”
And that would be the right thing to do for that poor ironmonger cause if he gives everyone who buys nails free hammers regardless if they own one what will happen is most of those 3 million or so nail buyers will run off to the G2A of Iron mongery and sell those 3 million hammers for a discount the iron monger cant possibly match cheating him out of millions just for being nice.
Then maybe he shouldn’t be giving away the hammers in the first place…
A long-time customer will only see the new guys getting something for free while they are denied that same thing because they have spent money at the store before. That is not only a slap in the face, it doesn’t even make any sense.
So say you already have a hammer and don’t need one anyway, and the smart salesman doesn’t want you to sell the useless hammer for cheap to someone who would otherwise buy the hammer from him at full price. Evidently, said salesman can afford to give stuff away, or has “free stuff” included in his marketing budget to entice customers to buy at his store and make more money in the future. Then why is it so hard to offer me something else in order to make me feel just as valued as that new customer? If it’s not a hammer that I could potentially sell to someone else, how about a coupon for my next purchase, or one for a free cup of coffee next time around (a.k.a. gems or character slot)? If it’s a 10$ coupon, I might just buy something for twice that amount. If I get a cup of coffee, I might just buy a muffin to go with it. If he sends me away feeling ripped off (even when that’s not the case, which makes this all the more absurd), I might not come back at all. Or just to lurk in the store and take up space without ever buying anything again.
I’m not complaining about the price of the nails, after all, just wondering why this new guy, who doesn’t have any ties to the store and might never come back again, gets free stuff and I get nothing despite years of loyalty.

Sorry guys but this is just such a non-issue. IMHO, this is exactly the way that MMO expansions should be sold. The new hawtness is the important part of the expansion. It is the new content that is going to bring in new players. ArenaNet including the old content is just a way to simplify getting these new players playing the game as soon and as easy as possible.
Getting upset because ArenaNet is “giving away” their 3 year old content to new players when they buy the full priced expansion is just kittened. Do you also complain when Steam (or any other retailer) puts software on sale? You payed full price for that “epic game” you bought on Day One a couple of years ago and here is Steam selling that same game (and even throwing in all the DLC content) for 75% off the price you paid. How dare they devalue your original investment?!? Do you demanding a refund or other considerations from Steam for this affront to your wallet?
Also missing the point. It’s not that we don’t want newbies to have the core game thrown in, which they need to play the HoT content they pay for. It’s that veteran players don’t get what they need to play all of the new content as well – a.k.a. a character slot. In order to play the new class we bought access to, we need to make another purchase (or delete an old character, making part of the time we spent in the game null and void, and time, unlike money, is something I can never get back), and that is what makes us and our support over the years feel very much unappreciated. That is all.

Then they try to soften the anger by openly stating “core game is a FREE BONUS, xpac is INDEED $50 alone”. lol wtf
And that tells me they are completely missing the point. It’s not about the price (which looks a little steep compared to the relative prices of the GW1 campaigns in the same frranchise, but is still reasonable). It’s about the inclusion of a freebie for new players while people like me, who spent three years and a lot of money on this game, don’t even get access to the content we allegedly paid for with those 45€ unless we pay an additional 10€ for a character slot. It’s unreasonable to assume that, after three years, people have saved one of their original slots for the revenant and thus won’t need another slot, or expect them to delete characters they might have spent hundreds of hours on in order to try a new class they might not even like.
This is still the Guild Wars franchise, so this is going to get measured against the existing game(s) no matter what, and the fact of the matter is that especially veteran players are used to getting character slots whenever a new class was introduced with a new campaign. That is what we know, which makes it so baffling that Anet decided to not do it this time and instead expects us to make an unrelated purchase so we can actually experience the content we bought with the expansion.
It’s ultimately Anet’s decision how to handle this, but I’m not sure that alienating a large group of players to make them spend a little more money short-term is smart; happy players spend a lot of money in the long run. Me? I’ll be wary to spend another dime on the shop in the future.
The simple solution is to give those who don’t “redeem” that freebie core game a character slot instead. Problem solved, players happy.

Adding my 2 cents…
I feel cheated. Plain and simple. And royally kittened off. It’s not the actual pirce tag, because that’s pretty par for the course for an MMo/expansion these days.
I’m kittened because the “free goodie” you throw in doesn’t give me anything, not even the option to create a separate, base-game only account (third one, which I neither want nor need, but that’s beside the point). I pay the same as an all-new player, but get significantly less out of it. And as long as that’s the case, I’ll hold off on buying HoT until the price goes down.
It’s so kitten simple to fix this: Offer anyone who has the base game on the upgraded account something else instead, something the people who get the core game out of the deal don’t get. At the very least a chaarcter slot, plus maybe the glider skin, or just a free minipet, I don’t care. Give me something that doesn’t make me feel like you don’t give a kitten about your veteran players.

A few event markers (the blue/red border thingies around points that you need to hold…) were wonky, i.e. one side of a bridge was properly marked and the other three just went up in the air, making the space we needed to hold look sort of vertical. Other than that, nothing out of the ordinary, aside from the giant toon in character creation.
Well there was some lag in between casting skills, and sometimes my glider didnt deploy when I jumped
Did you activate and level the glider mastery? Because it wasn’t all unlocked by default.
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
It’s a known bug. It happens with various weapons, mainhand or offhand, in the preview window and hero panel. Clearing the preview and then adding the weapon again will make it look normal for any preview purposes, and since it doesn’t affect gameplay, I suppose it’s not exactly high priority right now.
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
If you’d sold it to an NPC, maybe, but now another player has the item, is probably over the moon because they got it so cheap, and now what? CS won’t take it away from them, but you also won’t simply get a duplicate.
Sorry, but you’ll have to live with this :/
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
Did you delete the chat tab and make a new one? That’d be one thing I could think of…
A temporary fix might be putting the guild chat into the same tab as mapchat/everything into the very first chat tab. Fixed it for me, until they patched something and it worked again. Sorta. I still can’t see the “new message” notification, but at least the chat itself works again…
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
The bug is known, but it’s not like it gives players some kind of advantage. They look cool, that’s all this bug does, so I feel it’s a bit over the top to report them (and clutter the inbox of whoever looks at the bug reports with this in the process). It’s technically expoliting a bug, sure, but hardly something that should be smacked with a banhammer or anything.
If anything, whisper the player and tell them they are intentionally using a bug, and maybe they want to take the armour off because it’s not fair to players who don’t have it yet.
In any case, they wasted transmutation charges on this style, and if CS decides to slap some butt-ugly armour skins on them when removing the armour from the current game, they have to waste another load to get a cool style again. I’d say that’s punishment enough.

Yup, turning down the settings would be the go-to solution here. Specifically, reflections, shadows and character models (quality and/or limit).
Other than that, there’s not much you can do with a laptop. Depending on how old it is, maybe change the thermal paste to help with the heat.
