1. WvW thief builds that can 1vX (specifically Yishi’s build) are built for survivability. Tournament thief builds/glass cannon builds are built to burst and kill single targets and/or provide DPS from the shortbow, not survivability.
They’re completely different. Take Yishi and his build and put it in a tournament setting and he would be near useless to the team.
I have no doubt that if you take any generic thief and give them Yishi’s build and spec, that they would be able to do exactly what he does after getting used to the build.
2. The average “skill level” of WvW players is pathetic compared to the “skill level” of high-level tournament players. Not to mention most of the players in WvW are just doing things half asleep because its so boring.
Speaking of builds, Zoe L’s build is built for 1v1’s and the fact that she wins 1v1 match ups is pretty much a given. Again, take any average thief, and give them her build and spec, and they will be able to do exactly what she does after getting used to the build.
Regarding the actual topic at hand, in my opinion, the best thief players are the ones that are in the best teams and win the most. At the end of the day, the game only knows winning or losing. How your team wins, or why your team wins is irrelevant, only the fact that your team wins, and the only difference between a good thief and a bad thief is how often their team wins, and who they win against.

Read many of the responses here, but one thing I’m curious about is WHAT criteria this tier list is based upon.
Perhaps instead of just putting classes into random tiers “because I feel it fits in here,” we should have a discussion about “matchups,” and how each class compares to the other based on certain criteria, ie; holding a point, back cap ability/mobility, team fight utility, team fight damage, 1v1 ability, etc. And give each class a relative score.
The reason I say this is because at the end of the day, in order to fit one class into a team, you need to drop another. As such, everything is relative, and a tier list should be determined by this relativity.
For example; Thief – Ele comparison (arbitrary numbers)
Point holding 2-8
Mobility/back cap 5.5-4.5
Team Fight Utility: 4-6
Team fight damage: 5-5
1v1 ability – 3-7
From the above, we can see that thief gets 19.5 points, and the Ele gets 30.5 points.
Now the Thief – Guardian comparison
Point Holding 1-9
Mobility/back cap 8-2
Team fight Utility: 3-7
Team fight damage: 7-3
1v1 ability: 3-7
From here, we can see that the theif gets 22 points and the Guardian gets 28 points.
And an Ele – Guardian comparison
Point Holding 4-6
Mobility/back cap 7-3
Team Fight utility 4.5-5.5
Team fight Damage: 7-3
1v1 ability: 5-5
From here, we can see that the ele gets 27.5 and the guardian gets 22.5 points
We then just need to put together a decent set of criteria, and make these sort of match-up lists for each class combination. Once this is determined, it will be much easier to rank each class in the tier list, with the classes that get the highest points being at the top, and those with the least points being at the bottom.
Other potential criteria I could think of were: Viable build variations, burst damage potential, multiple of same class viability, Team fight sustain potential, etc.

Willing to sell.
5 gold per person, per win.
4 people + you, so 20 gold per win.
Send me a mail in game.
I’m just curious about the new WvW leaderboards being implemented soon. What is it a leaderboard of?
Just a leaderboard of world rankings like we see here?
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/wuvwuv/Updated-World-Ratings-Mar-22
Or is it going to be of the new WvWXP that they added? Because I will be very disappointed if it is. Basically just a leaderboard of who botted the most in WvW.
I would like to know more about the WvW ranking system that is going to be implemented next patch.
Can you lose ranking at all? By dying etc? On the flip side, can you cause others to lose ranking by killing them?
If not, this is just going to turn into yet another grind.
The removal of energy was obviously a PvE decision.
Pretty decent albeit shallow all around, except that one stupid “ranger balance” comment about pets getting agony resistance.
No one cares about Agony resistance for PvP.
Just watched the whole thing, and I have to say I’m a little disappointed. Not in the developers though, but in the way content of the discussion was pushed toward the balance side of things.
I believe balance to be the least of this games problems. You cannot market a game on “good balance” because most of the time it’s subjective. Gamers do not tell thier friends to come try out GW2 “cause its so balanced”. It’s not a selling point and never will be.
Features are what sell and grow games. Any of the top PvP games out there have features and balance is secondary and generally looks after itself.
I wanted to know more in depth info on custom servers, how will they work, are they monetized, how much will they be if they are? What are the restrictions on them? How will spectator mode work and what are some of the cool things that are unique to GW2 spec mode?
Features promote games and get new, old and disinterested players back in. I couldn’t give the proverbial flying fock Bout the overall balance discussion because balance is already relatively ok.
There isn’t a single non GW2 player out there, on the planet, that just got excited about a feature coming to the sPvP scene that would intice him to come check it out and give it a go.
Even worse is that it wouldn’t have interested a single WvW or PvE player to come try it out. Go look at the WvW forums, they call sPvP the “forgotten game mode that nobody plays”. I don’t even like WvW or its concept, but there’s more people playing WvW for the server Sea of Sorrows the. There would be in the entire EU and NA sPvP scene.
If we can’t encourage these guys to try sPvP, when they already own and like GW2, then there no point. You need to generate Interest from your in house population first, and 1 hour of balance discussions in a monthly SOTG and only 20 mins and little depth to the future features section won’t help.
Grouch, Nero and Xeph. I appreciate what you guys do and really think you guys are doing a great job. But I think the conversation was prioritized wrong.
I’ll say it again, balance discussion doesn’t bring players to the game or keep players in. The best balance in the world won’t make me feel any better if the game feels stagnated and there is t hope on the horizon.
My 2 cents.
Completely agree.
“Balance” of a game is a given, and something the game SHOULD be. Its not something to sell a game on. GW2 PvP from the very start has lacked structural features that are necessary to make a successful PvP game, and it is only slowly starting to get better.

Hello, I am just wondering if it is possible to change the “account name” I use when I log into GW2?
My current “account name” is an e-mail address that I have deactivated, and thus am wondering if it is possible to change it to a new e-mail address that I am currently using?
If so, how may I do so?
1) One question I would like to ask is what was the two Jon’s original idea of what high-level tournament play would be like, and how close or how far is the current meta from what they have envisioned?
OP brings up very interesting business-side points such as price-point of a game, as well as market penetration.
I had posted various times before release of the game in many different forums that I find it odd that Anet aimed to have Guild Wars 2 become an e-sport and yet deliberately ignore some of the largest and most competitive scenes in the world of E-sports, Asia and South-East Asia. Until now, there is still no advertisement of the game, or even news of localization efforts for China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and other South East Asian countries that consistently provide top teams and players to various international gaming events for all genres of games.
Even now, many western pro-gamers still go to Korea (and now even more to China and Taiwan) to “train,” mostly because they believe that Asian gamers are in general, better gamers. (If not, why bother to go to another country to “train?”) As such, with Anet deliberately ignoring this market, it has been said by many, that Anet had tried to make a “special olympics” of e-sports by shutting out Asian gamers and keeping it “western gamers only,” which in turn shut out a very large (if not majority) proportion of the potential e-sports global fanbase.
Additionally, in many of these countries, the price of the product has also been restrictive, as highlighted in the OP. I have read that it goes up to about $100 US if purchased in Brazil due to taxes and other tarrifs. Although, I understand why Anet will probably never let the full experience of GW2 go free to play, I believe that this business model is very counterproductive to an aspiring e-sport. As has been suggested many times on various different forums, a completely free to play PvP-only version of the game would go a long way in expanding the e-sports potential of GW2.

Back when there were people playing GW2 pvp we had threads just like that. You don’t see them anymore because there are just not that many people playing anymore.
I do remember threads like that, but I’ve never once seen a thread here on guild wars hit the 100 page mark.
I’d venture to say it was mostly because ANet staff repeatedly locked and deleted any threads that had the potential to go that high.
Just FYI, you may want to give people an idea of what sort of team they are applying for, and at what level of play the current people in the team are at.
In my opinion, MF gear is there for trash. When you’re running around Orr node farming or during easy trash in dungeons. However, when grouped with other players for dungeons, use your real gear. Don’t make the group suffer because you want a better drop. The effectiveness of a whole team with full MF gear vs real decked out gear can make the difference between a wipe and a win or a really long drawn out win vs a quick win that gives u more time for another dungeon run.
they should make it so that MF is shared amongst everyone in the party.
Not to be rude… but not having AR shouldn’t really be a huge deal, even in level 30+. The way Agony works, you need to get hit by a specific attack easily avoidable attack in order to have Agony inflicted upon you. Avoid the attack, and AR means nothing.
This is coming from a player who had 0 AR until about FotM L20+ when I finally got a decent ring I wanted to drop.
(edited by Reikou.7068)
To be honest, people go into a dungeon to get things done. Specifically farm tokens.
No one wants to bother wasting their time with a noob who doesn’t know his left from his right.
Stop being selfish, the world doesn’t revolve around you. The community is nice if you are nice to it. Honestly all I read in the opening post is “I’m a special snowflake but nobody else thinks so. Community must be bad.” The faster you drop this notion, the faster you’ll grow up.

Thats good. Save your money and spend it somewhere that matters.
The Chanel F/W 2012 collection is pretty amazing.
John Galliano and Chloe S/S 2013 are both REALLY great collections with lots of choice. Save your money and take a look at both if you have the chance!

I’ll be honest here OP and say that the reason it doesn’t look good is because you’re terrible at selecting colors, trying to get everything in black with tints of yellow or white everywhere.
Try a better color scheme.
Sylvari armors look much better with lower contrast and more simple highlights/shading.

A simple answer as to why the Gold/Gem exchange rate is at where it is now, is because buying gold from RMT is still about 1/3 the price of buying gold via gems.
Therefore, it is still much cheaper to purchase gold via rmt to convert to gems. Infact, if you do the math you can probably get the same amount of gems at half price for purchasing it through RMT gold.
Please tell me this is not a recommended course of action? Please?
Whether this is a “recommended course of action” or not is irrelevant to the fact that this IS occurring.

For anyone actually actually interested in purchasing gems, their best deal would be to purchase gold through RMT and then use the gold to buy gems in game.
For those willing to purchase gold, again, their best deal would be to purchase through RMT.
Therefore in this situation no one is buying gems with real money to sell for gold. The only gold/Gem transactions occurring are gold purchases of gems, thus driving the price up.

to be honest, that simply looks like lighting.
Specifically the character creation lightning.
Create the character and go into the tutorial zone. I’m pretty sure it will have disappeared by then.
I support this initiative.
Don’t particularly care for a legendary myself, however, I don’t see any reason why NOT to sell these on the cash shop. If anything, these would probably be a very good source of income for anet so they can actually put out some quality content.
Very interesting post.
I would like to reply to this point:
Enemies do not have clear abilities. – Almost all enemies in the game function similarly because they use monster skills. It is a challenge for developers to design unique mechanics for each type of enemy so it makes sense why they would go this route. However, this is the reason why dungeon mechanics are extremely uninteresting: the only quick way to make content challenging is to increase DPS and HP.
In my opinion, there IS a way to content challenging. Do it like how Ninja Gaiden or other games do it. Keep monster HP the same, but increase the number of mobs, increase the frequency of attacks and increase the burst damage done by each of those mobs. It will definitely require players to pay attention to the game if they wish to succeed, even in zerg situations, instead of selecting a mob, hitting “1” and tabbing out all the time.
I play for exploration, story, and concept. If I’m good enough to get to the next stunning vista, or complete the mission and see the next part of the story, or earn the piece of gear that fits the look I want, that’s all I need.
I tend to approach accumulating skill with the game in kind of a backwards way – most players are constantly looking for the combination of skills, traits and equipment that produces the best effect, and training themselves to perform well with those setups. I tend to pick whatever fits the idea in my head, become disappointed with how it actually performs, but keep plugging away until I fully own my weird little niche. I become the Grand Kung-Fu Master of my crappy builds, and sometimes dazzle people with the performance I can squeeze out of them, but it’s backhanded compliments at best – “Wow, what was amazing… for an Air and Earth traited Scepter/Dagger Elementalist. You should switch to Staff or Dagger/Dagger, dump all your points into Water and Arcane, change out all the utility skills you actually enjoy and use the following Trait selections. Then you’d be REALLY good!”
Sometimes, that kind of persistence gets rewarded. The Devs tend to notice if someone achieves that level of expertise and still underperforms. If you’re the Reikou from City of Heroes, you’ll recall me as @Eisenzahn, and my years of dedication to Lunaticia, my Elec/Elec Brute, before the huge list of bugs with those powers got resolved and she became an Incarnate Trial Dominating powerhouse. Usually though, I stay locked away from “high performance” by my choices… able to get the job done in PvE, but in PvP unable to meaningfully contribute to a battlefield full of people who are totally optimized.
Sure, I could make an alt with a PvP Build and learn to play it. But it wouldn’t be MY character. Playing a build someone else optimized is like logging into someone else’s saved game. And trying to optimize the build myself is futile, because I just don’t CARE which powers are most effective, if they don’t also look cool and fit my concept. The best I can hope for is to some day luck into a build that fits my style and vision for the character, and also just happens to be PvP capable. Until then, I keep my distance.
Unfortunately I am not the Reikou you knew from CoH. Perhaps from Aion-Triniel.
Also wanted to post that a pet peeve of mine is players like you. The special snowflake type. Wanting to be different for the sake of being different.
If using a build that someone else has optimized doesn’t sit well with you, do you also reinvent the wheel everytime you ride/drive a car?
As someone who plays the game mostly for PvP I find many posts like these rather odd.
Being a PvP player, especially to stay competitive, requires you to be good. To learn all the little tips and tricks and exploits and edges that you can use to one-up your opponent; hence, get better at the game. This is why hardcore PvP-ers will always be better at any skill related aspect of any game than PvE players, and it is blatantly obvious, especially when I wander into PvE to level alts/what not. It just leaves me to wonder why people even bother playing the game if they don’t care to get better at it? Are people really content with just being “under par” at something they do?
(edited by Reikou.7068)
sounds like a good idea, but no one has yet to step up and provide me with a name to contact, or a name of a guild etc.
Completely revamp how sPvP and PvE interact with each other.
1.) Have you use your PvE character armor/weapon skins in sPvP.
2.) Have weapon/armor skins (like Legendaries) NOT AVAILABLE in PvE acquired through sPvP, WvW, other game modes.
3.) Have your sPvP end game.
(edited by Reikou.7068)
TBQH, if anet goes through with their current plan for Ascended Items, I really hope they actually add the inspect option in the game.
Regardless of if the OP was being facetious, the points he brings up are true.
With the current description of how Agony works, having players in non-ascended/infused gear will just drag a group down. Having a character inspect option is a must.
Enemy becoming harder is …..bad?
I thought having a challenge – and be rewarded for taking on that challenge – is a good thing. Guess I was wrong. Nowadays its all about look and having everything easy.
Challenge like Dark Souls that test your reflexes and ability? Yes.
Challenge like Diablo 3 that tests what kind of gear you have? No.
And with this geargrind, Anet is going the Diablo 3 route.
In Aion it was important to be in a guild, for PvP revenge killing in an Open World to getting help completing some kitten difficult quests.
in Aion it was never important to be in a guild. All the good players could function perfectly solo. The guild was irrelevant. Not to say that I didn’t meet good players through the guild that I was in, but anyone at the top level in Aion played and functioned solo.
So when will I just be able to buy this ascended gear from the cash shop already?
Can’t be arsed to grind all this stuff over and over.
you queued for an hour and then gave up. unfortunately the other groups probably did the same, at a different time, on a different day.
sadly in low population situations, always-on automated matching doesn’t work very well. greater organization is required. like what you’re trying to do in this thread I guess.anet could help by allowing people to queue whilst playing other pvp or pve modes, which would allow people to queue all night and hopefully build up the critical mass needed to get tournaments rolling.
we queued for hourS on a few occasions with nothing.
I’m asking for a simple roll call of groups that would be willing to do paid tournaments in asia/oceanic time zone. If we can get at least 8 together, perhaps we can arrange tournaments to make sure we get paid pops instead of waiting for hours for nothing.
When are they just going to sell ascended gear in the cash shop?
Diablo 3 2.0
I really hope anet takes a good look at what they’re trying to implement, have a nice long board meeting, and drop this initiative before more people abandon ship.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/No-paid-teams-for-Aussie-and-Asians/first#post684181
Again I post;
Paid tournaments are pretty much dead upon arrival for the prime time of the Asia/Oceanic time zone of GMT+7-11 (give or take.)
My group and I queued for a good 1 hour without any matchups, and thus just decided to go for free tournaments instead.
I’ve asked around and the general consensus is that “there is no one queueing for paid tournaments” at these times.
As such, I thought I would make this post on the official forums to see if there are any other groups that are interested in doing paid tournaments during the Asian/Oceanic prime time. If so, please post here. Perhaps if there are 8 or more groups that are active during this time zone, we can try to arrange a tournament.
Reikou – Supernova Jpn [SpNv]
Just wondering which dungeon has the best gold income for time investment?
From what I know it is Ascalon Catacombs Explorable, however, if there is a better one, please let me know.
(edited by Reikou.7068)
Wow, someones got some beef.
We all know you guys are nothing compared to NA scene. Why is the EU Leader boards even on there? It should just be NA.
huehuehue.
by not double posting and doing jump puzzles daily.
They should have made it such that legendaries required a certain amount of paid tournament qualifier points or something.
would be amazing.
Turn around and walk away? You’re an ele. They can’t kill you.
This would just be another mindless grind unless there was ways for players to lose rank as well.
Personally I’d like an aion-like system where players gain rank points for killing other players, and lose rank points for dying, the amount gained/lost would depend (basically) on the ranks of both players.
After accumulating rank points, they can then use the rank points to purchase gears (skins), and start out from the bottom again.
“Commander” status should be awarded to those who accumulate rank points, but don’t spend them, with the top 10 (or whatever arbitrary number) players on each world automatically getting the “commander” sign above their heads when they enter WvW.
And of course, each player’s rank would be shown to the opponents. “Stormbluff Isle 5-Star Officer” “Jade Quarry Rank 1 Defender,” “Blackgate Commander” etc.
(edited by Reikou.7068)
Supernova Jpn is always looking for other groups to play against in the Asia/Oceanic time zone, especially in paids. Unfortunately there just doesn’t seem to be any interest. I made a topic a week or so ago for a roll call looking to see how many active groups there actually are in the Asia/Oceanic time zone that would be up for doing paid tournaments, and got no response.
plays a thief, a mesmer, and a guardian. /facepalm
^this. If your sig said you played a Ranger, you’d get a better reception to your suggestion. As it is, prepare to be flamed.
so again, everyone not in the top 100 leaderboards prove themselves incompetent by not discussing the actual topic at hand, but instead try to attack the individual that posted the thread. Amazing.
If you want high-level discussion, go create a well thought out, discussion invoking thread. There are plenty of them on these boards, some with several 100 replies. Sure, there are more whine/qq threads, but those can be easily ignored.
Cutting off the vast portion of your player base from the official game forums is not good business.
Why? Homeless people don’t exactly get invited to Davos, and dropouts aren’t consulted when it comes to discussing quantum physics, and for good reason. Or do you complain about those being “elitist” as well? In order to make this board something worth reading instead of wading through piles of kitten, those who obviously don’t know what they’re talking about (those not in the top 100 leaderboards) should be prevented from posting on this board.
Again I reiterate, it will help the competitive community move forward instead of again, the blind leading the blind.
(edited by Reikou.7068)
I find it interesting to know what proffession each player is playing in the Ladder.
Is it posible?
I think you’ll find that a majority of the top players often have a “main” one, but can play 2-3 or even more professions competently. The “main” profession being the one necessary for the team comp.
Also, #1 in US/The world is a Warrior main. Goes to show how clueless 90% of the people posting on this board is.
(edited by Reikou.7068)
did you not have a necro or engi in the team?
I can assure you there’s teams in that ladder that don’t even deserve the top 20, they simply have more QPs because they play more.
Oh wow…
Who are you to decide which teams “deserve” top 20, and which teams do not?
This is a ladder of QPs. They have enough QP’s to be in the top 20, they deserve to be in it. Relative “skill” is irrelevant.
(edited by Reikou.7068)
So yesterday i tried PvP the normal one and the free tournaments,
i play a thief and not couse its OP, i just started with this proffession from the very beginning and stick with it couse i love it.
In normal WvW i play a Condition-Stealth Build, but i figured it out very soon in pvp … not the best choise, its just kind of a nother playstile:
Burst-Damage is asked for and nothing else, its just a matter who get the first hit.
I kinda started to detest backstab-thieves ^^’ Lord help me i hate my own kind XDSo pvp allows us to rearrange our build and everything completly free anytime, its ok couse its really needed, close range fights with not a lot room or space, when they expect you coming, burst damage builds only.
But now i start feeling insecure, is my wvw-build entirely wrong? Maybe i would benefit in wvw from Backstab as well more then from Venom-Build.
-_-
Is Backstab the only thing to go with thief? And what the heck is pvp even there for? We dont get any loot, our armor isnt damaged and it seems like a huge waist of time for me O.o, why do you guys play it?
direct answer to your question, should you be using backstab in WvW instead of a venom build? Yes you should.
Now that QP leaderboards are out, its pretty obvious who knows what they’re talking about and who doesn’t.
The sPvP boards have been spammed by terrible players since day 1. In order to promote more constructive, critical, and intelligent discussion going into the future, I propose that anyone that is not in the top 100 for QP Leaderboards are locked out from posting on these boards.
This will not only help to highlight the real issues in this the game, instead of every thread being “omg thieves,” or something equally silly, it will also allow for more intelligent and knowledgeable discussion about the high end metagame.
Perhaps those in the lower tiers may actually learn something about getting better at this game from the more experienced players instead it just being a situation of the blind leading the blind.

Everything in your post can be fixed by a simple answer of “Play free/paid tournaments.”
I think the multi-guild system is fine if you use it the right way.
People often like to think of guilds as an “end,” where you join one and do everything with your guild members, hence the whole “only represent our guild” kind of thing going around. The multi-guild system is definitely destructive to this kind of environment.
On the other hand, instead of thinking of guilds as an end, try to think of them as means to an end. They are an extended contact list for the purposes of doing something.
For example, I was in one of the first few waves of people to hit L80. Because of this, there were very few people in places such as Orr, or other higher level areas, which made the Orr events quite difficult. I made a guild for the purposes of keeping track of all L80s on our world in order to allow for easier contact between higher level players in order to do the Orr events or higher level dungeons. After about a week or two, as more and more people hit level 80, the guild was no longer necessary, so I disbanded it.
Additionally, I am currently in five different guilds, all of which serve a different purpose for me. I represent each when it serves my purpose, and don’t really see a problem with the system at all.
1. Personal Guild Bank
2. tPvP team name
3. tPvP tournament syncing guild
4. An Extended contacts list to find decent/good players for tournaments.
5. Guild to play casual tPvP with.
