Actually, if you look at his games, many of his opponents seem to have that “flight” idea programmed into their minds mixed with a half-hearted attempt to fight back. Many of them also seem to ignore targeting him completely, and their combat skills are relatively lackluster. Furthermore, his build seems extremely suspect, which, presumably, means that he’s even luckier with his opponents than was implied before.

i hate to be the one to say “bad opponents” on a video as it makes me feel like a hater…. but he is right here. seen some of his live play…i keep saying WTF is that other thief/player doing. really? why did he do that…wow. but thats me. idk.

Perhaps so. I’ve never really watched him play, so I can’t comment too much on that. Perhaps its true, perhaps its not.

I’m simply saying that if Sizer is able to pull it off, other thieves should be able to do so as well. and even if Sizer is “an outlier in the statistic,” it doesn’t mean that the build is bad. It just means that everyone else needs to L2P.

If the day comes that S/D Evasion can really no longer be played at top level, then I will rephrase my statement.

Except NO other class is balanced in that way. It’s all balanced by the general population. Why should thief be any different?

No other class is balanced this way has more to do with the fact that anet’s balance team is incredibly incompetent and doesn’t know how they want to balance the game, than it being a good game-balance philosophy.

You can’t post a video of sizer and say it represents most of the population. He is literally on the BEST sPvP team EU atm. And is probably one of the best S/D thieves atm as well (since I haven’t seen anything from Jumper in a long time). Sizer is an outlier in the statistic.

actually it means that every other thief that can’t do what Sizer does simply needs to L2P. Sizer proves the build still has the potential to be good.

Balance should only be tweaked for players at the highest-level of play, because at any other level of play, it is simply a L2P issue. And while it is nice to have a semblance of balance while you are learning to play, it shouldn’t be a priority for balancing the game.

After being really skeptical about the patch for Thieves, I must say at the end of the day I think thieves got a buff, specifically the D/P Glass 10/30/0/0/30, or old 25/30/0/0/15.

While we got the short end of the stick for additions, (the venom heal is terrible) the initiative regen increase is HUGE and really improve the combat viability of thieves in general.

Permastealth is still maintainable, albeit slightly more difficult.
Sword Mainhand’s Infiltrator’s Return got nerfed, which was kind of necessary.
S/D Larcenous got nerfed… but in the completely wrong way.
S/P Pistol Whip got buffed and its pretty good now. Unfortunately it still suffers from the same issues that it did before: It blends you on Retal and Confusion. Assuming your opponent has neither, this is actually a pretty solid option atm.

While obviously there are some issues to deal with, I think at the end of the day this is a step in the right direction.

Skill Lag - Moves don't go off

Lag across the board has become very terrible recently.

Been getting hit while in dodge animation (after endurance has been burned) etc. Its really weird.

WvW is also in an absolutely unplayable state in terms of lag.

Anet needs to get their kitten together.

The venom share trait needs to make venoms ground-target (900 range), and shadowstep you to the area where you want to share the venom. There also needs to be a trait that stealths you when you activate venom skills. Those two things would probably fix venom builds across the board.

I’d add making every venom in the game insta-cast so that you can actually chain them during attacks.

It would also allow Skale Venom to have a unique role as an independent thief heal, as it will be the only heal that will allow the player to continue offensive pressure while healing.

I always thought an FFA match would be amazing.

Put it in some PvE Dungeon or something, or perhaps even the Queen’s Pavillion map, without mobs of course. Running through the corridors of Ascalonian Catacombs, hunting enemies and trying to survive… I think it could become a very fun game mode.

My personal strategy revolves around Forcing them into DS, disengaging, and then re-engaging after they’ve come out of DS.

The problem with necro is that they can easily 100-0 a thief in about 3-4 seconds with just fearchain starting with an instant-cast fear from DS that is impossible to dodge. At the end of the day its just a really bad matchup to add to the loooonnng list of already bad matchups for the thief.

How would anet introduce a game mode with different strategies for Early/Mid/Late game? I’m honestly not too sure.

Temple of the Silent Storm. Ironically it is by far the best map for viewing because of the buffs, but is never played. It is the one map that I think has a good chance of being an interesting watch, with Foefire being the only other that has potential.

This is true. Temple and Foefire kind of have this in them, but even then, Temple is not really “Early/Mid/Late game,” but more plays to a timer…

These are also exceptions.

I personally think the issue with this is the game format. Perhaps the game itself. Its just boring to watch.

The way the game is played is pretty much the same throughout the match. Once you’ve seen one teamfight, you’ve pretty much seen them all.

There is no real Early-game/Mid-game/Late-game phases of a match, so there’s no real progress during the match.

How would anet introduce a game mode with different strategies for Early/Mid/Late game? I’m honestly not too sure.


As for what we can do now, well with the patch coming up Dec 10, there are bound to be a few more people trying out PvP, and we just need to captivate them somehow.

I think the best way to implement gold rewards in spvp would be based on the point difference.

The bigger the difference, the more points for the winners and less for the losers.

Example for TeamQ:

A bigger difference in points will then also become a bigger difference in gold reward.(2g & 1g) + 50s for the winners
When the difference in points is smaller, the gold rewards will be closer together.(1.70g & 1.30g) + 50s for the winners

500 vs 499
losing team = okies, here some gold for your effort, you did your best

500 vs 0
losing team = what the kitten? you are not even trying! 0 team score? no gold for you!

Travlane, I think you need to know that there is a difference between “DPS” and “burst damage.”

Having high Burst damage doesn’t mean high DPS, and having high DPS doesn’t mean having high burst damage.

Your 62.5k backstab is great and all, but really says nothing about your DPS other than you randomly crit really kittene time.

MESMERS / THEIVES - - - Stealthier?

I read through the thread and from what I can see its mostly about Prismatic Understanding Mesmers vs Thieves in terms of combat.

One thing I want to get out of the way first. If we are talking about total stealth uptime over an unlimited period, there is no arguing that the thief can maintain stealth the longest. Infact, if the thief wanted to we can permastealth, with 100% stealth uptime.

Going back to PU Mesmers vs Thieves, the biggest thing here is that 1v1 fights in GW2 often do not last longer than 1 minute, and as such, practical stealth uptime of the PU mesmer is often equal to that of the thief, if not longer.

The difference being that the thief often has to be out of stealth in order to deal damage to the mesmer while the mesmer can maintain stealth while still doing damage to the thief. As such, practical stealth uptime for the mesmer is much higher when compared to the thief.

Some players suggested that for a thief to kill the PU mesmer, all the thief needs to do is range and kite. And while this is true, the difference is that in the thief vs PU mesmer matchup, the the thief has to constantly play defensive, with no opportunity to play offensive while the mesmer can just keep pressure throughout the fight without having to play defensive at all.

The reason for this is the mesmer trait Chaos V: Debilitating Dissipation combined with Dueling X: Deceptive Evasion. Anytime the Thief attempts to play offensive, all the mesmer has to do is dodge, which:
1. Creates a clone and 2. “kills”/destroys a clone thus dealing AoE damage and spreading conditions, both an offensive and defensive move at once.

This means that the thief can never really ever be in melee range of the mesmer, and the mesmer can just keep pressuring the thief.

At the end of the day, I find this factor to be the biggest issue more so than Prismatic Understanding itself. I think one thing that would bring PU mesmers back into line would be changing how the game determines clone “death.” If anet made it so that only clones that were destroyed by an opponent’s attack, and not simply “overwritten,” by another clone-creating skill/trait would count as “clone death,” that could trigger Debilitating Dissipation, it would significantly change the matchup of PU Mes vs Thief, and would also add counterplay to the debilitating dissipation trait.

Until then, this is simply one more bad matchup to add to the long list of bad matchups for the thief class in general.

TBQH, its not so much the issue of being able to instantly reroll.

Its the fact that one can instantly reroll and still perform 90% of what someone who has “mastered the class,” can do.

There needs to be a much wider gap between the skill floor and the skill ceiling of classes, and the way anet is going, they’re trying to make it so that the skill floor IS the skill ceiling for all the classes.

What if camps started with 0 supply?

@Dawdler Not being able to take supply from camps actually brings it much closer to the Edge of the Mists design, where you can’t grab supply from resource nodes and the supply teleports automatically to towers/keeps.

My only worry would be that the beginning of a matchup, not counting the supply brought over from the previous matchup, would involve teams starting up Siegerazer for supply and siege while another group would probably go over to the enemy and harass their Siegerazer event. Some part of it feels a little silly, although enough people bringing supply from a previous session would make the point moot.

I think this would be amazing. It would add a whole new strategy to the game; warcraft 3 style Hero Harass. And while the issue of having supply leftover from the previous round would still happen, that would easily be remedied by resetting the supply on each character to 0 everytime there is a new round.

Thief has been at the bottom of the barrel for straight up combat viability and potential for at least 6 months now. Perhaps even 9 months.

Yes the thief class has strengths elsewhere, but for straight up combat, right now the Mesmer is what the thief wishes it was.

Just curious if anyone feels this way/thinks its time to have one as well?

From what we know, the skill/balance team is completely separate from the PvP team and PvE team, and yet people keep posting their balance suggestions and ideas on this board.

I’m not sure if the skill balance team even reads the PvP forum.

As such, is it possible to have a subforum specifically for skills and balancing? I think it would be a good idea to clean up clutter, especially with the whole “collaborative development” thing.

Hello OP,

With regards to your post, “competent D/P Thief,” I will assume you are talking about the 30 Shadow Arts perma-stealth thief build.

To be completely honest, you probably will never actually kill a good perma-stealth thief that is intent on surviving. On the flip side, the chances of the perma-stealth thief killing you is also rather slim.

Its just one of the very many stalemate type situations in this game. Its not so much about “skill,” but simply that there are certain mechanics in the game of Guild Wars 2 that can be broken and abused in certain builds such as the perma-stealth D/P Thief, perma-evade S/D thief, bunker warrior, etc. And while the end result of these builds may not exactly be “overpowered” per-say, they are still rather one-dimensional and boring to play as and against. As such, they are “broken,” builds that need to be re-adjusted to fit in more with the game of Guild Wars 2.

the biggest issue with tequatl is the spawn window.

They need to lower the spawn window from 1 hr down to 10-15 min, and/or completely remove the window altogether, and have him spawn on a set timer.

The whole shadow arts line just needs to get changed is all. D/P weaponset itself is fine.

Just need to move Infusion of Shadow to Grandmaster Trait. Remove or significantly nerf Shadow’s Rejuvenation, and Meld with Shadows.

Eh… maybe I’m not sure how to use it properly, but I really don’t like the warrior steal at all.

Too long of a cast time which leaves a squishy thief vulnerable, not to mention it blends yourself on Retal.

My fav steals are probably the Thief Steal, followed closely by the Guardian and Mesmer steals.

I just have to go out of my way to say that Fort Aspenwood has really really good Bloodlust control.

The players themselves may not be stellar, but wow, you guys really have some really great reaction time and communication regarding Bloodlust. Every time we’ve tried to take Bloodlust from your BL, you have it back in sub-5 minutes, and you actively go for opposing map’s Bloodlust. Very cool. Huge props to you all.

SBI on the other hand again continues to disappoint. Absolutely terrible Bloodlust Control, and it just seems like its impossible to muster up 2 other people to even attempt to take Bloodlust, even with all the new additions. Its kind of pathetic.

PvP, pretty much since Day 1.

If you play PvE, you will always run out of things to do, regardless of what game you play, because dev-made content (PvE) is limited.

PvP on the other hand, is mostly player-generated-“content,” where every encounter is different.

If you want to get “more out of your game” in almost any game, play PvP.

Yes.

Look at: SC2, LoL, DotA2, Gunbound, etc. All technically PvP Massively Multiplayer Online games.

This is because PvP brings ever changing constant user-generated “content” that allows for a player’s online experience to be ever evolving.

IMO the real question should be if PvE belongs in an MMO where content is fixed and rarely, if ever, evolves.

This leads to the population of the game outgrowing content, and thus leaving it.

Yes I do.

I believe that transferring to a server that is of a lower population than the server you are in should be free.

Transferring to a server that is of a higher population than the server you are in should be more expensive.

Transferring to a server that is of equal population to the server you are in should be 1800 gems.

Basically what I gathered from the graph:

Rangers, and Guardians are severely overpowered and thus were significantly over represented at 20-23%.

Warriros are slightly overpowered and thus were slightly over presented at 15%.

Engineers, Thieves, and Necromancers are just on par at 13% (basically on 100/8)

Mesmers and Elementalists are severely underpowered and thus were significantly under represented.

if you really want to go down this path IIRC each “day” in Guild Wars is only about 4 hours RL time, with 2 hours of day and 2 hours of night.

Having had the pleasure to play the game with him and get to know him I’ve been watching this thread with horror because he’s literally the last person to deserve to be dragged through the mud. Guardian Roaming, plus 1vx fights. video is only a month old, so it’s not outdated.

This is not “roaming.” This is just some random player rushing into 1vX fights and killing one or two and then dying. Notice how he never finishes any of his fights and just cuts out to the next one. Any class can do this to various degrees.

Most important thing about roaming is the ability to disengage losing fights and actually escape to fight another day. Between the Warrior and Guardian, I would have to say the warrior takes the cake for that.

That said, the video is really entertaining. Thank you very much for posting it.

No. They promote build diversity. Some builds wouldn’t be viable without it. You really want to limit the number of builds that people use even more?

It promotes broken kitten, not “build diversity.”

For the sake of balance, they should be removed from WvW.
