i’ve just been watching this story for a long time – ive seen how they have gone for goals and had to adapt ….i see a story to their reasoning, and even understand how this confusion came to be, so i don’t see it the same way. But i can still do spot checks to make sure blizzard, google, autodesk, adobe or ea, hasn’t infiltrated their offices either. rofl.
what if anet made the core game 49.99 and gave new buyers a free copy of hot.
would that be a bad deal ?
The reason I’m here is because anet is simply great at what they do, they are game masters, you will not find better game developers and artists. period.
so no matter what the deal, the quality is superior ….this is not saying they don’t have bugs …this is saying they know how to entertain. the rest are details on how to package that in a way everyone can support.
Having played computer games for 30+ years and been in the game industry as a developer for 2 years, I respectfully disagree. Not saying they’re bad, but the best? Not by a longshot. Their artists are pretty great though, i’ll give you that.
ok, i’d be interested to know what other rpg / pvp mmo comes close, not wow,
they are big budget and can have an orchestra on staff – you’d have to give anet the same resources to compare.
and i’ll also say, art is a huge deal to me, made me a huge fan of diablo 2 – ( not 3! never played it !)
i’ve also played for a long time, was in ultima online using the bug that took stuff through walls and riding horses when it first came out! had my own wizards tower! ^.^
ad&d based rpg / pvp is my fav genre! anet is that genre’s current heir! i say with complete confidence!

no one can sustain a business on freebies, they are promotional items. Promotions are in fact an expense and should be factored as part of marketing costs :p There are no such thing as freebies, no one makes a salary giving out freebies unless they are promoting something else.
I have a shop, i give out free stuff because i want peoples trust and appreciation. it’s not free, it has worth. when you give out freebies, at the very least you want people to “Pay” attention.

The expansion should come with a free character slot regardless if you get the standard edition or if you pre-order or not. That’s a reasonable opinion to have considering it’s kind of the trend in MMO circles to do that.
respectfully snipped for brevity….

i’m thinking the problem again here is the perception, the expansion costs more than the core game. the game should not be devalued, on sale yes, old and devalued no, if for no other reason other than it will always have more content than this and any future expansion and is the heart of guildwars. Heck, i’d even add a guildwars version 2.1 – throw some endorphin ai/physics in there and dx 11 …what ?! then we’d be cooking with fire! They need to go there soon anyways, dx12 is just around the corner.
(edited by Ricky.4706)
but that’s not being sneaky, they have been transparent about being a next generation of mmo – this involves taking risks in different models. unfortunately the perception of the bundle has devalued the core game and made it look free to play. The fact ncsoft has placed a value for it as stand alone on amazon, shows that was not their intention.
i think in the future, the way to avoid this confusion, is to sell the core game, and the new buyer gets 1 coupon they can redeem for the expansion of their choice. The core game can stay valued at 39.99 and expansions can be anything up to 39.99 in price.
this would be probably be good for anet too so they can plan their projects by budgets vs expansion prices. the good old fashioned way actually, i can do x amount of work for x amount of money, and project that i can recoup those expenses in x amount of time with x amount of sales. anything from the gem store after that is the additional income.

this is a player versus game, we fight…that’s what we do. any player versus game that has a peaceful forum isn’t worth it’s weight in salt. lol
well thats why I suggested not taking so long to release them, to keep them low priced. They were able to make those elaborate events pretty quick, it should be easy to road map, those that want to pvp, don’t need those expansions, the pve’rs will want them.
pvp’rs will want finishers and skins / stuff to show off in the ring or in wvw. wvw’rs are also likely to be pve’rs as well because of ascended items and legendaries. Although you have focused wvw / pvp’rs as well.

I think this is basically what has happened:
They’ve switched to selling Living Story.
That really is the whole plan if you think about it. That’s why HoT has low content and they’re saying you can’t get future updates without it.
The biggest problem is they weren’t just direct about what their plans mean.
You have to read between every line to realize this whole thing should be called Living Story Season 3 + Future Update Pass.
That’s what they’re really doing but they’ve made a mess presenting in a way that sounds a lot more ambitious than it is. Maybe they’re trying to market as something more spectacular sounding with this expansion label. But personally, my problem is still… LS has been punctually released but the majority of the releases are lackluster.
I can’t agree with this, i’ve seen it play out from the beginning. I do believe they wanted to create a model that was self sustaining through the gem store. Making those events are a lot of work and overtime for them, remember they get into stories, models , voice acting …it’s not just a quick thing – to really be effective in the debate you really have to understand both sides so you know where there is freedom to negotiate. if x amount of players didn’t even log on, they didn’t buy from gem store and didn’t support the game….yet if they log on 3 years later they get the events for free…that’s not a good business model. They can catch up by buying past events. That is legit, i made it a point to log on…i am still a real fan …and now feeling like a loved one again , so i got it free! but i digress.
well there ya go, that is the debate! is hot an upgrade, or is it an expansion. if it’s an upgrade, then it’s all inclusive….if it’s an expansion, then there should be 2 keys for 2 products.
Disclaimer – I’m not debating, this was more like a thought exercise…i’m not angry …i’m happy anet loves me! I love them too and want them to stay in business without suffering
@minbariguy.7504 that would then be the upgrade path …the expansion path would generate more revenue while allowing the user to pick and choose. so it really is ultimately a corporate decision as to how they want to evolve, but it should be made clear to avoid confusion.
oh come on, you have to admit, it would still be a fun debate to watch. -in Q voice-
(edited by Ricky.4706)
i’m waiting for the upgrade vs expansion debate to play out, … it could mean an additional copy of the core guildwars game too. i am ok though, because i feel the vets were recognized by anet. if i can get an extra copy of the game too, i wont be angry at that! depends on everyone’s reasoning and negotiating skills though! So far i’m having to bet on anet, dunno if everyone understands the argument enough to present it right…i’m not upset so i can’t complain. -goes into lotus position-
my current amusements are the crying white knights that called the vets entitled…classic!
(edited by Ricky.4706)
I do trust them, to listen when something really bugs us. They always made mistakes since forever…been there done that …they love us too! :p
if you stay quiet, they keep moving, they are very fast paced!
ya … that’s the problem – expansion is 2 products …when an upgrade is one product – which is what a product becomes when you integrate it like Hot is integrated with the core version. the essence of this confusion is the conflict of perception. -hrmm sounds like a good song title-
i have nothing against the word “upgrade” either, makes life less confusing, but i suppose ‘expansion’ is the proper syntax in the gaming world. It makes sense too because it seems that they are adding a new mechanic in each expansion, so they need to upgrade the base engine and expand upon the last update. But expansion will confuse the kittens out of anyone in that scenario, especially if they want to pick and choose future updates. that will be a future argument of “Well why do i have to buy every expansion when i only want a particular one.” perception is important to understanding.
technically you are upgrading the game with new areas and mechanics, and expansions would be trivial cosmetic things that have nothing to do with mechanics and game flow. like skins costumes and toys. That is unless you were planning on giving out every prior expansion for free for every subsequent release. so expansion 25 has all prior 24 expansions included -in star trek next gen data voice-
(edited by Ricky.4706)
wow, look at em glow!!!
this is awesome, you are obviously going to kitten off other people and they will put up a new fight and get us even Moar goodies!!
-patiently eats popcorn- /Cheer
honestly, i would love for new players to visit gw1 …to understand how to make deadly teams in gw2
I’m convinced they don’t understand the mechanics behind the spell system, and if you pit a vet guild vs a new player guild …….the vet guild would destroy them.
school our young ones for more intense game play in gw2
there is more to life than just being a zerg…..much more!
zergs are fun, but not nearly as deadly as they could be if new players understood the tactics!
we’ve loved anet for a very long time, we’ve been there …and done that.
and don’t wait so long for expansions so the expansions don’t have to get so expensive. Anet has in fact done a ton of work …I can’t say for free…because of the gemstore, but i’m quite sure it didn’t get as much value for the amount of work put into it.
Plus it will stop that time limit stuff, not everyone has the luxury of attending every event and you end up selling them anyways …..further some events are forever closed …and those were fun too!!
bring the mercs and henchies back, so I can do the dungeons solo please :p
ahh the wisdom of a waiting vet! i’m still going to wait a few, but feel much happier about my eventual purchase!
ahhh sweet, so it’s fixed then people who prepurchased with 1 slot, get only 1 slot.
and established players also get one slot with the basic purchase. New players get 5-6 slots with the basic purchase.
obviously if the other purchaser wanted a slot, they would have gotten the basic and purchased it separately because it’s the more affordable way. Their intent was on the extra goodies too! nothing wrong with that!
those bonuses are NOT sillly!! they are beautiful!
was he the one that started the veteran entitlement thread ?
which btw, this is why i suggested a slots worth of gems …..but after all the abuse the vets took with the entitlement argument, this is a wonderful bonus. Thank you anet <3
(edited by Ricky.4706)
i guess the vets weren’t acting entitled after all … ?
there is no drama, it was wonderful to see the passion of prepurchasers, it makes me feel anet is very loved. That means a lot to me and they don’t get only 1 …but 2 slots ….if they are vets that is.
it would be silly to get angry at such a beautiful gesture. The vets were once devoted noobs too. <3
yes, but you supported anet, and that’s really nice!
I’ve loved anet for a very long time, I knew they weren’t going to let me down. so I waited. It’s not the bmw sports coupe I tried for, but I’m not complaining, why should anyone else, yall got 2 slots…I just got 1.
it’s same thing, except now the veterans get to use the “entitlement” word in their debates. it’s natural, the cycle of life even.
this post was made before theirs.
the items mentioned are still fun to think about, you have something against having fun ? maybe you need to visit gw1 to understand good clean fun and teamwork …maybe ?
i miss you hanging out with us in game.
that could work, -
for the pet dragon – it could even have a storyline too……it’s hostile specifically to the vets because it knows we have ancient secrets that can destroy it. It’s friendlier to new players because it feels it has a chance to explain it’s side without bias! but ofcourse the vets feel you are being brainwashed so we have our finisher. almost reminds me of the factions story line actually
(edited by Ricky.4706)
ok , so
1 – mini dragon pet that flames vet characters when they are around – must be a new player to get it – not for vets.
1 – noob juicer finisher – must be a vet to get it, the more years on the vet, the larger the finisher maybe ?
1 – white robe with zero defenses – for players that prepurchased in beta
I don’t know about anyone else, but i’m starting to like this deal!
thats imo whats missing from the pvp to make it seriously competitive
in gw1 – we had to work as a team because each build had a specific purpose …so i’ll keep you guys alive, the necro will keep your endurance full so you can keep attacking, and the ranger will pull the target …….it will focus on the endurance / stance warrior …..while the elementalists nuke it. That’s how to kill tequatl with 8-12 men in gw1. that just doesn’t exist in gw2. There is no strong need for teamwork because each player is self sufficient, so the only real strategy is kiting.
this strategy can be had in gw2 , the problem is you don’t have to. We had to, so as vets we have an understanding of the mechanics in a way new gw2 players don’t “Have to” learn…so in a sense the strategist part of the gw culture has lost value in next generations.
i think it would be good for the game for new players to understand the real mechanics behind guildwars, so they can understand why a veteran guild constantly face rolls them.
(edited by Ricky.4706)
no, actually we had strong stances! we didn’t run, we hardly had a chance to heal, we actually had to think and work together, if you made your build too strong in healing, you wouldn’t be able to kill a fly …so you really had to plan stuff out!
so all these new toyz in gw2 actually made people weaker strategists.
yall know to run jump and dodge, we didn’t have that …we had to pull, isolate and spike to stay alive.
now that’s a REAL title you can flash around with pride that actually means something! ^.^ new players bettah recognize when they see it!! Those GW1 titles are to be feared with much reverence, they can kill you with a candy cane, Nude!
(edited by Ricky.4706)
well maybe with all the fuss on the forum now, and your post, a moderator would be so kind as to help.
as crazy as it sounds helping them sell gw1 while the gw2 fiasco gets fixed helps them and would probably make the community closer as we all understand where we are coming from. Gw is not just a consumer base, we are a culture with a rich history, which I for one am very fond and proud of.
this bad moment will not change our history, just another bug to be fixed!
(edited by Ricky.4706)
it’s easy to fix …seriously….call it an upgrade …and this is normal procedure. an old version gets upgraded with a new version, old and new users have whole versions of the new version, Not an additional copy of an old version.
The problem is an expansion is a 2nd product.
had this been Guildwars 2.1 then the arguing would be silly and it would still be a bargain for a new player.
(edited by Ricky.4706)
maybe instead of trying to get old account password back, ask gw2 team if they can link your old account, which would probably be much easier
they kept patching it, when i went back in, i had patches waiting for me….it’s much smoother now. literally felt like a new game to me and the work isn’t wasted because you can still get titles for gw2.
but the advantage is GW1 is done, no more surprises.
new players get the game at a super low cost, vets have a plethora of birthday gifts waiting for them ^.^ everyone is loved in gw1!
(edited by Ricky.4706)
Hero’s ascent now allows you to make all henchie and hero teams!
it’s been so long, it literally feels like a new game and our guild halls are still there!
and I was happy to see there is still a nice population in the game!
perk for new players – you actually get to design your own skillbar and customize your strategy with not one, but 2 professions at the same time!! woot! The pvp has way more strategy as you can devote your role to healing your team – much more intelligent combat!
And a function for …get this …..Guild vs Guild …yep, a whole selection of areas to fight private guildwars!
it’s also sillly to think that veterans should be attracted to deals made for only newbies.
what hurts is they didn’t think of us. but that’s fine, this would be a great time to have a gw1 revival – would love to see the look on their faces when they get complaints about lag from all the vets going back to hero’s ascent. -shows wedding ring-
it’s been so long that we’ve played gw1, it’s literally like a new game…..Guildwars 3 even!
(edited by Ricky.4706)
honestly, a real vet is married to anet….we don’t have to complain, we don’t have to even leave ….we’ve already paid for perpetual bandwidth on their service.
even if we left, we have a permanent room in everything else they made, as long as they are alive. We don’t have to complain really, we don’t have to buy anything from alllll the great stuff we have already ….heck…I’m still not even done with gw1.
Anet put a ring on it with us long ago, we do them a favor by complaining. Keep that bandwidth coming, I love you <3
i would think the rule is universal, no money , no honey.
sorry, i doubt the developers are the marketing guys
the game is just way too brilliant and intelligently made to blame them for this marketing mess.
I refuse to believe the developers and artist are responsible for this mess. They are the ones that made this mess worth enduring.
the marketing guy is an alien!!
I was thinking more Risen Shark. Evil and hungry.
i doubt that, even risen sharks are smart enough to know when to back off. ^.^

the marketing guy is an alien and completely out of touch with the community, he’s the guy you’d see building a golem under a hot boiling pot!
let’s be honest, the game is great ….we just want to know it’s not run by trolls – that’s the ultimate deciding factor.
prove it’s not run by trolls …..then we can go back to trolling each other in the friendliest way the net has ever seen. users have a right to be trolls, corporations don’t.
