It’s a shame that MF only affects mobs drops. As a mesmer I have a lot of trouble tagging mobs during events, frequently I get almost as much loot from a chest at the end of an event chain than I do from the event itself.

Its not like im inexperienced in MMOs.

This might be your problem.

I’ve actually found veteran MMO players have a harder time adjusting to GW2 than non MMO’rs – dodge rolls, positioning, reflexes are just as important as skill usage.. One of my friends i brought to GW2 has never played an MMO before it and she managed to pick up and master Mesmer right out the gate.

The first step to mastering GW2, is to accept you’re a newb now, just like the rest of us and have to learn a new game from the ground up

Mesmer and Mob Tapping Problems

in Mesmer

Posted by: Ryuujin.8236

Ryuujin.8236

I run GS/Sword/Focus, traited towards phantasm damage.

In unpredictable spawns I use focus 4 to yank mobs into a pile, and then drop iZerker/iWarden on them (Which in orr is about 4-6k damage each), and dive into the pile with blurred flurry – Often this works so well I end up taking out the group before some of the other players can tag them (I actually had a warrior ask me to stop taking all the kills in one smaller group!) – Plink’s event chain, or defending the Arah gate tend to be great for this style of play.

In predictable spawns where mobs have a period of invulnerability I switch to my sword, and drop a pair of mirror images on them (So they chase them closely), in this way once they reach their destination and become vulnerable I can just detonate them and swing my sword about for good measure. That usually tags most of the wave but the cooldown is a limiting factor so I tend to avoid these if i get a choice of event.

In sudden, vulnerable from word go spawns you may as well give up if there’s a clusterkitten of warriors and eles sat on spawn swinging and AoEing pre-emptively – I just avoid these events and go find something I can tag.

@Animus: On tarnished coast I have encountered over 2 dozen bot farmers personally, they are so common it’s ridiculous and no surprise the economy is crashing down around our ears.

Signs that may suggest a player is in fact a bot:

  1. Slow methodical farming, no group pulls.
  2. Never dodges, tanks enemies with their face.
  3. Only moves between tasks, never looks around or makes idle, pointless movements like a player might.
  4. Stops to let health regen after each kill
  5. Continues attack chain even after enemy has died, doesn’t switch weapons
  6. Sometimes appears to teleport between targets
  7. Always in low risk zone, away from events or dangerous mobs, usually farms passive mobs

Mesmer Portal Debate

in Mesmer

Ryuujin.8236

I have a reasonable proposal that’d work for everyone.

Drop portal wholesale, and give Mesmer a timeloop style spell – ie it reverts the Mesmer’s location/health/stamina to where it was say 10 or 20 seconds ago.

Functionally, this can be used like portal; to swap between two locations during a fight, and get out of harms way. It can also be used as an “Oh crap” button which Portal is also useful for, and it can be used to rollback jumping puzzle errors (My most frequent use xD)

It can’t however be used to help allies (Unless it was made an AoE), nor does it create an exploitable portal, nor does it allow forward momentum, only backwards so it can’t be used to push forces into the fray, only withdraw safely from action.

a focus might be good to have in inventory for that random speed buff

The focus is the friend of the tactician. Traited, you can use temporal curtain as a speed buff OR an anti-projectile barrier, AND you can detonate it as a pull – for example, place the curtain in a wall or corner, and you can slam your enemies into a neat pile for easy nuking, or rip them off one of your buddies…

…or if you’re getting fed up with everyone stealling the kills in orr, rip the mobs away at some unexpected angle to buy you time to tag them yourself

Warden can be throw onto a ranged enemy to deflect their projectiles and/or force them to waste time kiting, or thrown into a group to cause mass murder, you could also use the warden for cover while you jump into the fray and get slashing too.

Doesn’t seem like it’s working as intended

If iWarden moved around I’d be rather annoyed. I don’t want to chase it to be protected by its Reflection.

If it’s meant to be used as a defensive position (ie. it stands there, reflects projectiles, and hits anyone who tries close to melee), why does it spawn in melee range of the enemy, instead of defensive range of you?

Yup, I have a 52 Guardian and a 65 Engineer besides my 80 mesmer. I won’t accuse them of face rolling, both classes do have some quite complex chains and theories behind getting the most out of them as I suspect is true of most classes, but engineer and guardian both do vastly more damage/have better support options, with far less effort.

So if a skill is proving too strong in sPvP, we should also nerf it in WvW, tournement play, PvE and single player instances… and people who play those other 4 game modes (Which make up the vast majority of the players), should kindly sit down and shut up while players who don’t even play mesmer, dictate their future?

I play a Mesmer and I’m having a hard time believing people are actually defending Moa Morph.

It’s a matter of principle. Don’t you ever get fed up with the constant stream of bad players coming to our forum, telling you that you need to be nerfed. When you’re running about Orr, struggling to get tags on kills, performing 10-20 attack chains with wrist-damage inducing speed that warriors can destroy simply by rolling their face across the keyboard. just because some guy in an sPvP matched bruised a guy’s ego by turning him into a chicken?

And let’s not forget the vast majority of people who try mesmer, give up because it’s probably the singularly hardest class to play, and for that reason is also one of the least played classes?

It’s not the class that’s OP. it’s the players… if a warrior can play by rolling his face, and a thief can play by learning one combo that insta-kills then naturally those classes also attract the really bad players. Conversely a class like mesmer with such a cliff-like learning curve tends to attract very few, resulting in this impression that mesmers are OP because the very fact you’re looking at a high level mesmer (especially in WvW or PvE), immediatly precludes the possibility they’re a BAD player. Bad mesmers don’t usually get much beyond lvl 30

in Asura

Do we know for a fact the former is the actual Asura theme?

Because EVERY time we’ve seen official Asura related material it uses the second theme – the preview of Rata Sum, the intro, even some Asura territories in the game.

Because it seems possible someone uploaded the so called “Asura theme” titled as such, which has then been re-uploaded by other users under the same name and in turn people now think it is the Asura theme.

Personally I think they made the right choice, the former theme is a bit too sweeping and grand, whereas the latter plays with small timid notes yet has classical overtones (often associated with intellectual pursuits)

Mantras certainly have a time and place. The question is whether it’s worth investing too much into them; to fully trait mantras you have to put quite a few points into trait lines you wouldn’t usually find very useful.

In PvP they shine brightest, traited or not. In the scope of a large WvW battle, there’ll be times where you can dart behind cover to buy a few seconds of recovery time and to recharge your mantras, and hop back out and combine the mantras with your attack to burst down an opponent

Dungeon PvE - Why is it so boring?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Ryuujin.8236

Ryuujin.8236

I do agree with the Op on this to an extent i just did my first dungeon on my mezzie (Level 60 already xD), and, it was pretty dull compared to my guardian or engy.

The reason is simply because besides setting up appropriate glamours as and when you can, manufacturing phantasms and/or shatter fodder, and DPSing, there isn’t a whole lot that we can do. We don’t need to rotate our barrier skills like a guardian, we don’t need to be situationally aware so far on the back line, we can see everything in front of us.

We don’t really have any combos per-say in that situation. i mostly just sit on scepter/pistol setting up duellist, then switch to greatsword once the duellists are up and that’s me done for the battle :p

As in the Pharaoh example, there have been powerful people in real life who have claimed to be gods. But it doesn’t make them a god. The problem really is defining “what is a god” in the first place in this context, even then at the end of the day we’re arguing over definitions; no matter how you cut it the charr deny the existence of any supreme authority but themselves and that is final.

You’re think too much about feedback as a weapon.

Every shot that is reflect back, is a shot that didn’t hit your own side; your enemy is losing net health, while your side remains steady.

Furthermore, allied attacks passing through the feedback bubble are dropping confusion onto enemies. Confusion turns enemy actions into a hitpoint loss, or acts as a psuedo-shutdown by discouraging them from attacking.

While nobody may be DYING from the confusion or feedback bubble, it’s greatly tipping the odds against the enemy by softing them up, protecting your allies, and reducing their attack rate. At the end of the day victory isn’t about killing but about defeatting and an enemy held back or limping away to lick it’s wounds is an enemy that hasn’t captured your keep or control point.

Gather round kiddies for I have a story to tell

Once upon a time there was a WoW clone called Allods online, and in it lived a special creature called a psionicist. They were a finicky beast with fiddly combos of skills; telekinetic pulls, time manipulation, illusions, controls and psychic assaults.

They were difficult to play and faired relatively poorly in PvE, but in PvP they really shone – all the other classes could only stand in awe, crying out “OMG NERF PSI”, even the faceroller classes like melee healer and summoner, for in this class they found a worthy adversary, even if they were numerically the rarest class.

Astrum Nival listened to their players and did as they said; every balance patch came along, and the developers nerfed another of Psionicists skills, and more players would abandon the class. But every patch the remaining psioncists would adapt, and the following night in the arena the other classes would one more scream “nerf psionicist”.

Eventually, the class was utterly nerfed into ruination, with hardly a single build that worked and so few players left they were literally known by name to the players of the North American servers, yet these scarce few remained a force to be reckoned with in the PvP arena.

The mistake everyone had made was believing that psionicist, with it’s confusing playstyle and complex skill interactions was overpowered at all; instead the classes complexity had drawn the strategists, tacticians and thinkers, with every nerf they simply refined the pool, and as it ultimately turned out, you can’t nerf a smart player.

Let that be a lesson. You can take the skills out of the class, but you can’t take the skill out of a player, and classes like the mesmer will always attract a different breed of player, one who could probably defeat a hundreds blade warrior armed with nothing more than a rusty piece of metal and a blob of gunk.

When it comes down to it, every class has some gimmick faceroll builds, they all have drawbacks the only people who use them are cookie-cutter-kids looking for some easy gankings to stroke their ego, or to cut and post on youtube as proof of their leet skillz (I killed 20 guys today!). They don’t pull much weight in the real battle when squads start locking horns, keeps start getting assaulted and the siege weapons fire up.

Phantasmal Defender Vs Null Field

in Mesmer

Posted by: Ryuujin.8236

Ryuujin.8236

In sPvP it MIGHT work, the thing is that the disenchanter is random who it targets and it only targets once every 4.5 seconds, and it targets enemies as well as foes, the projectile does bounce but there’s no guarantee it’ll hit you when you need it, some conditions don’t even last 4.5 seconds but need stripping urgently.

In a big zerg on zerg WvW battle the odds of the disenchanter getting the effect onto you is incredibly low.

Personally I’m of the opinion it’s better to have a field with a long recharge that can totally cleanse all allies in a large area when it’s absolutely needed, as opposed to a phantasm that will keep everyone cleaned up a bit, but might miss that stun, bleed or immobilise that is about to kill you. If condition removal is the primary concern the mantra isn’t shabby either, but doesn’t strip boons or provide a combo field which is incredibly useful in large team battles

You keep talking about 1 Vs 1, and 2 Vs 1. The game isn’t balanced for 1 Vs 1 yet. in fact, precious few games ever are balanced 1 Vs 1 when class systems are involved because every class has it’s rock, paper or scissors.

Mesmer are already gods of 1 Vs 1, Moa or not they are going to win 90% of the time in 1 vs 1; shouldn’t you just argue Mesmers need nerfing globally?

Sorry, it’s just you seem to be dwelling on a VERY VERY specific situation, that occurs occasionally, in a single game mode, when a person takes a huge gamble and tries to cap a point in 5 vs 5, solo. And then runs into a Mesmer, who happens to have Moa selected as his elite, and it happens to be off cooldown.

In this situation Moa can end you… so, to you this extremely rare scenario that’s reason to nerf it into obsolescence throughout all the other game modes?

All classes in this game are about movement and positioning but the mesmer is easily one of the most reliant on mobility to survive, having no real barriers or AoE blinds that other classes use to block melee.

Once you get a bit stronger though, you’ll be less running away. And more skirmishing – jumping into the action and horripulating foes with sword or staff, and then deftly dropping back out of the fight and attackign from range while your clones take up the slack.

Not sure if it’s the starter or finsher of a combo field.
‘’Combine and Kapow’’

“Combine and compound”

it’s one of the combo quotes, along with “Synergy is beautiful!”

IF this were to happen:

Golems can be colored using acquired dyes. Their abilities are assigned out of a list tailored by you(Using skill points) to fit your build. However, they may lack certain traits that living animals have.

And at this stage we’ve moved clear of “Asura having a racial pet style” to “Asura having a drastic racial advantage over other races”

If you want a pet golem you can take it as your elite skill (Summon golem), or get it from the hall of monuments as a harmless mini pet if you were to go play GW1 :p
