I’m running probably exactly (or darn near it) what you’re planning on. 0/10/30/0/30 with Sw/Sh + Hammer. I run Soldier Armor with Zerk weapons and trinkets. Enough to maintain 30% crit chance pre Fury. I don’t do a whole lot of zergs (lower pop/tier server). Mostly small group/roaming, so if like you say you mostly find yourself in those situations then give it a shot.
(edited by Sagramor.7395)
If you’re building for conditions you really want all the condition damage you can get, and that usually means sacrificing power. Especially since Warrior gets bleed on crit, unlike Thief for instance who prefers Carrion in a condition build. You won’t do a whole lot of damage to siege, and you may suck at tagging, but you’ll be a pain in a duel/skirmish. I can’t tell if those I’ve faced are running Rabid, Apothecary or a mix.
You can build for power or conditions though. Defektive’s PvP Sw/Sh + LB is a power build, but those I’ve seen in WvW are running Sw/Sw + LB with Apothecary/Rabid.

But if you want an annoying stunny Sword/Warhorn build I’m running something like this.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fIAQNAS8ejkOxu1OGPMxBE0DNkLqiTBlQ9wO2w4A-jUCBYLCy0yAkFQECwZPFRjtMqIas6FYqSER1eDFRrWGAmxA-w
It’s pretty effective. The biggest hurdle being blind.
A lot of staying alive in this game is timing your dodges (and evades/blocks) properly, and using them wisely.
warriors in wvw are frontliners…
The OP did not mention zergs. Northern Shiverpeaks is a T5 server, not T1. If you had read “The idea is…” it sounds like the design is leaning towards skirmish/solo roaming, and not zergs.
@ OP: Things to consider.
Leg Specialist has a 5 sec internal cooldown.
With Knights gear you’re going to be putting out pretty low condition damage.
For a really annoying build I’d go for one of the ones mentioned by Julie Yann. Sw/Sh + M/Sw with runes of perplexity sounds like it could be a real pain in the kitten . Especially if you ran with Sigils of Doom. I can personally attest to Sw/Sw + LB regen/cond build (assuming apothecary) being a royal pain, as I’ve run into a few good ones.
Both are great in WvW. As for PvE Warriors are solid, but I’m not sure about Eles. Granted your PvE and WvW builds are most likely going to look a lot different.
Perma-swiftness, movement abilities, and making sure there’s a marathon of something on TV you can half pay attention to yet still enjoy.
Did it on the Engineer, and have been putting it off on my Warrior for months.
@ Viparix: You should be using Knights armor and Zerk accessories, not the other way around If you’re trying to work some toughness into your build. You’re shorting yourself a bunch of Crit Damage. 23% by my reckoning.
Also:
- Sigil of Air/Fire > Accuracy
- Rifle Mod > Rifled Barrels
- Sitting Duck > Infused Precision (IMO). Also consider Modified Ammo if you’re running with a group who is laying down a lot of conditions.
- I’ve always used Speedy Kits over Adrenal Implant.
- Consider Sharpening Stones over Maintenance Oils. You’ll still have over 50% crit chance.
If you can make it work with justifiable trait/utility/gear/weapon choices it’s viable. That’s the beauty of the Engineer.
There are none I’m aware of, but there area a smattering of build guides around. Official Forums, GW2Guru, Intothemists, etc. There’s also the wiki for some general info.
The search function on the official forums was still broken last I checked, but there are a bunch of build guides here. You just have to find ‘em. Are you looking for anything in particular? If it’s a leveling guide, just play what you want. You can level with anything in this game. Leveling’s a breeze.
S/S + LB should work well for soloing camps as Combustive Shot should bypass the blind spam from the scouts. Just keep spamming it and Arcing Arrow while dancing around in your fire field to keep them all inside.
Calc doesn’t wanna load on my mobile, but a standard 0/30/20/0/20 with rabid/apothecary should be fine.
Swap your Sigil of Bloodlust for Fire perhaps. You’re gonna be critting a lot, and unless you can guarantee your stacks won’t get wiped because of a down I’d steer clear of stacking sigils in PvP/WvW. You could prob swap out the Jewel for Valk/Soldier if you wanted. You have should enough crit chance. And You’re going to have to test Lyssa out. A Necro running Corrupt Boon could ruin your day.
Well you could start by posting your build, and some more information about the Engineer you were dueling. What utilities/kits were they using, etc.
Well Dulfy.net is a great resource when it comes to Living Story. At least that’s all I’ve ever used it for.
Crafting can be a great alternative to buying gear if you have the mats. Otherwise you’ll have to weigh cost of mats, vs just buying something comparable. You should always be gathering mats as you go if you’re working on crafting, or even if you’re not. You get exp and cash if you choose to sell ‘em. Remember to keep your gather tools on par with the zone you’re in so you don’t end up harvesting vendor trash.
I have the same OCD when leveling to finish a zone before moving on, and it’s a good one to have if you ever want to get the map completion achievement. Another thing while leveling is to fully explore all of the cities early on. Especially if you’re “behind” in exp. That’ll give you a nice chunk of exp. I have 100% Map completion on my Engineer, and I’m deciding whether or not I want to do it on my Warrior as well. And if you see an event pop up along the way, do it.
I don’t play much PvE at all so I can’t really speak for Dungeon Master. Mostly WvW, World Events, and the occasional PvP. The world bosses are great to do, and offer nice loot. Don’t discount WvW. Sounds like you found a zerg though. If I don’t wanna mess with a zerg I’ll just hang out in my home Borderland (as opposed to the Eternal Battleground) defending and recapturing objectives. Unless there’s an organize guild thing going on or someone gets a breakout going most of the fighting is skirmishes, which is a nice break from the zerg.
If you want to find a guild check the Looking For Guild forums. You can always switch servers if you find a guild that happens to be located not on your server. But a guild is by no means necessary.
Well for armor and weapons there’s no higher quality than exotics. For the accessories you can get ascended.
Legendary weapons have the same stats as exotics.
I’m going to second not listening to any whining that’s going on in the prof sub-forum.
If you like the idea of the Ranger/Mesmer then give it a shot. Ranger will be a breeze to solo level with, but Mesmer may be a little rocky at the start.
Regarding melee classes the heavies Warrior/Guardian won’t go down too fast unless they get focused on, and even then they can be built with a good amount of staying power. The Guardian having more built in support/tankiness, and the Warrior having more damage/control.
You are suffering from a chronic disease called “Did not read”. Take your time and it should go away.
I did read the “pamphlet” that came with the game and it instructed me which keys to hit to perform attacks and how to access my inventory and hero accoutrements. Was there something more specific you were referring to?
Yeah That pamphlet was pretty kittening useless, I read it too.
There was a pamphlet?
Dynamic Events – Do them and say thank you for the experience, karma, gold, and loot. If all you do is run from heart to heart you’ll find yourself “behind” in level by the time you finish a zone.
Crafting – Talk to the NPC before training. If I remember correctly there’s a dialog option that’s something along the lines of, “What can I craft as an ____?” after which the NPC will tell you. If you had looked at your armor you would have seen that it says “Armor Class Medium Armor”, and the Armorsmith in response to “What can I craft as an armorsmith?” will have replied “Heavy armor, inventory boxes, and runes.” If you happen to pick the wrong one, no big deal. Just retrain as the one you want. If you happen to have spent mats crafting things you don’t need/can’t use just sell ’em off and farm/buy more mats.
New Content (Living Story) – Read your mail. They do a good job of pointing you in the right direction. There’s even a “Show Me” button in certain mail messages. Talk to Heralds and Living Story Scouts. I don’t recall if you’re expressly told to talk to them in the mail messages, but I’m pretty sure somewhere along the way you’re directed toward them. They want everyone to be able to play through the Living Story so you will be up-leveled when necessary. You will be weaker than a true 80, but still able to participate. Just pay attention to your level and that of your opponents, and play accordingly.
I’ve played my fair share of MMOs, and this was by far the easiest to “figure out.” They’re not hiding anything from you, or intentionally making anything difficult like some.
Regarding the introduction of a new tutorial it won’t help (much). People who don’t pay attention/read won’t start doing so because there’s a fancy new tutorial.
That may all sound harsh, but all of the problems your experiencing are no one’s fault but your own.
In PvP you’re automagically 80.
S/S + LB is definitely viable. I ran into a few over the past few weeks.
Check out Defektive’s PvP LB + Sw/Sh build. Could probably adapt that to Sw/Sw WvW with as little as changing Shield Mastery to Missile Deflection/Dogged March, and changing gear to condition.
Health regen on Dolyak is terrible last I checked.
I’m not interested in playing Engineers
or Rangers, they just look boring to me.
Engineer (in my oninion) is probably one of the least boring professions in the game.
Best, good, easy, etc. are all very subjective, even if you’re asking for a newbie friendly profession. What works for someone else may not work for you. We’re not going to be able to hand you a profession+build let you go into PvP and guarantee you’ll perform well. That’s up to you.
Since you’re just talking about PvP make a few different characters you think you might like, research some builds on the forums (or dream up your own), and try them out in the mists. It’s not like you have to level all the way to 80, and gear up to test their potential.
You are suffering from a chronic disease called “Did not read”. Take your time and it should go away.
I’m gonna second this.
I’m not sure about a specific build for Queen’s Gauntlet, but a pretty standard Grenade HGH is something like this. Taking into account your gear. I’m cheap so runes of the undead are a default, but you could go boon/condition duration as well.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fcAQJAqalspSXHxSfF17ICoC5loHPGlNZfewWpFEC-jEyAIsASLApMA5wioxWNLiGrmBTlSEV7QKiWtQALWDA-w
I’m using the gear I am because it was all crafted (weapons/jewels) or karma (armor/accessories) used in previous incarnations of P/P HGH. Mask uses some Rampager pieces for more offense, but my setup is serviceable and a good deal tankier. If you’re just getting your toes wet in WvW that’s kinda nice.
I use the same traits and utilities, but slightly different gear. Definitely been my go-to Engi build for a while.
Runes of Undead because I’m cheap, and Sigil of Strength because I’m not very good at maintaining buffs via on swap sigils.
(edited by Sagramor.7395)
If you’re on a lower pop/tier server there’s a lot less ZvZ and a lot more skirmishing.
yeah ive played just about all to lvl 20 and i like the theif necro and ranger a bit but never tried engineer actually so i maybe i should
Yes you should. And you should also take your chars into the mists to see how they play at 80.
Time to hit up the suggestion forum.
getting gear is so confusing hehehehe
If you’re lucky you can find gear with stats and a skin you like. Otherwise grab gear with the stats, and another set with the skins then transmute them. It’s not a terrible system.
It looks like it should trigger when you hit a target. Something like Rune of the Grove/Fire that triggers when you’re hit will say “when hit” instead of “on hit” like this new rune.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dark_armor
Wiki is your friend
You can play Engineer as a ranged class, but the only setup in which max effectiveness and max range coincide is Grenades. Everything else you’ll get the most bang for your buck in mid-close range.
To add to the list Rifle Warrior has 1200 range, and the burst has 1500. Single target, but pierces when traited.
SD is a bursty glass cannon setup. You want to be as close to full Zerk as you can get. It’s a high risk – high reward build.
I haven’t played it recently, but assuming nothing’s changed you want something like this.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fcAQFAUl0picX7STF17IxoHkW0dG0j86X7KqQ+B-jwxAYLAiCQyrIasF3ioxqWwUlER1ejioVLFQEjBA-e
Well there really isn’t an “elemental warrior” type in GW2. Might want to give Engineer a whirl though.
I stand corrected.
I would probably say 0/20/20/0/30. In a Power build you most likely won’t be using your Sword burst all that much so you should have decent adrenaline generation if you’re swapping a lot. You’ll probably get more mileage out of the Longbow with that setup at the cost of Attack of Opportunity.
Fun is subjective. If you like both playstyles then you’ve answered your own question.
Are you sure there’s no Ascended stat allocation that corresponds to your trinket+jewel setup?
I don’t believe that there is. I run soldiers trinkets and clerics jewels.
Couldn’t you run a mix of soldier’s and cleric’s trinkets for the same results?
Yes. You could definitely mix and match to get the desired result.
Full PVT w/ Cleric Jewel
Power: 448
Toughness: 346
Vitality: 256
Healing: 150
PVT Back, Neck, Rings & Cleric Earrings
Power: 508
Toughness: 376
Vitality: 256
Healing: 182
I leveled my thief most of the way with P/D, and I’m just starting to pick him up again with the recent changes after being shelved for a while. I’m thinking something like this. Would probably swap SoS for Blinding Powder/Roll For Initiative/Shadowstep once I got to some action. Or Skale Venom if you need more condition pressure.
Longbow can go either way. It really depends on your alternate weapon set. LB + Sw/Sw condition builds are sprouting up in WvW. If paired with just about anything else however it would probably be better suited to a power build. The best application for LB in WvW for me personally is siege.
Are you sure there’s no Ascended stat allocation that corresponds to your trinket+jewel setup?
I don’t believe that there is. I run soldiers trinkets and clerics jewels.
Yup. No ascended for those stats. You could save your laurels, or try and make some money. Unless you need the cash I’d save ‘em. You never know. Anet could come along and kill your build next patch, and then you’d be able to spend those laurels.
Are you sure there’s no Ascended stat allocation that corresponds to your trinket+jewel setup?
Some things come to mind.
1. Second sigil (if compared to rifle)
2. Very nice to blast thieves out of their refuge and watch them stand around dumbfounded with the revealed debuff
3. Another blast source for healing and buffing
4. Nice stun of ability 5 while not thrown
5. Denial of enemy staking friends with ability 4
6. Blasting people off of cliffs
7. Watching ranged classes nuke themselves when you time ability 4 rightNot saying it is ‘better’ than two pistols.
Just some food for thought. There is much thief annoyance in there!
Whatever floats your boat!
What I’ve found, and this may be grossly overgeneralizing is this:
Static Discharge = Rifle
Heavy Conditions = Pistol/Pistol
Everything Else = Pistol/Shield
There’s P/P HGH + TK and P/P HGH + Grenades as the main two.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fcAQJAqalspSXH5SfF1LJRIFFG/gKkXRPeMln8nCsF-jkCB4MBkWAkyAIHqIasltht6KIlXRTzATliIq2hoIa1CBsYNA-w
The Grenade version is pretty much the same. Just swap TK for Grenades and move points from Inventions to Explosives. What do you use these for? PvE, WvW, sPvP or a mix of those?
I use mine everywhere.
10/10/20/30/0
Incendiary powder, Pistol CD reduction, Stabilized Armor, Shield CD, Fast acting Elixirs or Self regulation defenses, Cleaning Formula 409, and HGH
P/S, Full Rabid armor, mix of rabid and apothecary accessories.
What utilities do you use with that build?
Tool kit, Elixir B and Elixir S, the healing elixir, and supply crate.
Build is mainly for solo/small man roaming.
I don’t understand why you’d slot Apothecary anything without at least Healing Turret/Elixir Gun. Also a little confused on the Shield in an HGH build. I will usually bring along the Shield just about anytime I’m slotting anything with a combo field, but your build has none.
I’m going to second also bringing your Ele up to 80. There’s no reason you can’t play both once at 80 (unless you count WXP).
I don’t have a warrior so I’m a little unsure about WvW/PvP but they’re supposedly not too good there. Warriors reign supreme in PvE so if that’s what you mostly do, stick to the warrior.
Eles are kinda average all around, some will argue they’re over/underpowered, but the elementalists’ capabilities are much more dependent on player skill than warriors since they have a much higher skill cap.
If you’re out to have fun, not just goldfarm and throw huge numbers out, I’d recommend going with the elementalist as they seem to be much more fun/challenging to use. If you’re in it for the cash and facerolling content go with the warrior. Take all I’ve said with a grain of salt since after all, it’s one person’s opinion :P
Like you said, you don’t have a Warrior. Big grain of salt.
To the OP: What levels are your Ele and Warrior currently? If they’re still kinda low take them into the mists to get a feel for how they’ll play at 80. If you like both play styles equally that’s probably the best advice I can give.
There’s P/P HGH + TK and P/P HGH + Grenades as the main two.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fcAQJAqalspSXH5SfF1LJRIFFG/gKkXRPeMln8nCsF-jkCB4MBkWAkyAIHqIasltht6KIlXRTzATliIq2hoIa1CBsYNA-w
The Grenade version is pretty much the same. Just swap TK for Grenades and move points from Inventions to Explosives.
Why Sword is getting more play time than Axe as a dps weapon these days is Final Thrust. It does almost as much damage as a max Adrenaline Eviscerate. Also Axe #1 was recently changed so that the bulk of the damage was at the end of the chain, making it less appealing to PvP/WvW players.
I don’t know what you’re looking for in WvW, but here’s what I run. Haven’t tested it it in too many monster Zergs, but it performs pretty well just about everywhere else.
30% unbuffed crit + Fury + Unsuspecting Foe guarantees 100% crit chance on
Earthshaker and whatever else you can fit into that stun duration, as well as the Shield Bash > Final Thrust combo.
The beauty of the Engineer is that if you can justify your utility/trait/gear choices it’s a viable build.
