I didn’t go for 2-Handed Training because I should be able to get decent uptime on Fury from Furious Grip, and when taking camps Blinds can be a real pain. I’d have to play around with it and see which works better
I spent some time with Axe while leveling, but haven’t really used it in a while. Not sure what to pair with it in a power build though. Dagger maybe for Cripple/Poison/Evade?
If going GS – Axe/X I might try something like this. Again perhaps using Ranger Runes and SotH instead of expensive Traveler Runes.
So I finally got my Ranger to 80. I play almost exclusively WvW. I had been juggling a Warrior, Engineer and Necro but wanted something different. I was thinking I wanted to start with a non-Longbow Power build for all-around WvW play. I don’t get huge zerg action most times on my server, but I’d like to be able to handle it when it does arise. I was thinking of a mid-close range skirmisher type build. Please let me know if this is a horrible idea.
Here’s what I have come up with as a possible build.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQJAVRjEq0ya/KOsw1aAGhq9DUBZAzwNAcmDjQJrIK-T1SDwA53fQqSDYqqc4BAk4KAUVZ2L1KApLYhSQAmgkcIAIEg5JA-w
I don’t have my heart set on the Traveler Runes as they’re pretty pricey. I’d be all for using Signet of the Hunt while I save up for the runes, or using a different set altogether (Ranger or Warrior perhaps). The ascended accessories are what I have available from other characters that I could potentially use. Outside of those I’m restricted to exotics if anyone is going to propose alternatives.
Thanks in advance
I don’t believe there’s a white circle for Locust Swarm. At least none I’ve noticed.
Took the test and got Guardian.
Not really that surprised, because thematically I’m usually drawn to cleric/paladin/priest types. However, I find GW2’s implementation of this archetype to be grueling to play (at least solo leveling), and haven’t gotten one past the 30s (3 attempts thus far). Currently juggling Engineer and Warrior. Have been meaning to give Guardian another go. 4th time’s a charm right?
Yes, but not as a sniper. Sniper on a Warrior usually equates to Rifle.
P/S is the way to go not only for double sigils, but for the blast finisher.
Bombs can go either way, but in PvE where confusion stacks could likely fall off before they’re consumed you’re probably better off going power. That being say you don’t need 30 pts in Explosives since you won’t be maximizing Short Fuse in a power build. Since it sounds like you want to be more healy you’re going to want to be using your blast finishers on water fields.
You could also drop Toolkit for Rocket Boots for another Blast Finisher.
Send in a ticket. Worst they can say is no.
Try hearts and events in an area that’s your level. You could also buy from Karma merchants or craft. Alternatively you could just buy a whole new set of blue/green from the TP every 5-10 levels if you have the cash.
… the amount of time you’re going to save is so small that you might as well try different builds and weapons to see if anything particularly stands out to you. Have fun with it.

If you like burning, One gives you a chance to cause Flame Burst on Crit (AoE fire & burning…not much but effects multiple enemies) and another can increase burning length.
If you’re talking about Sigil of Fire it’s just a flame blast. It does not apply Burning.
Both can be excellent classes and it really comes down to your personal preferences and what would fit you better.
And Elementalists aren’t all squishy. Guild mate of mine is an Ele and the biggest tank I know. 2900 toughness.
2900 toughness or 2900 armor? I’m pretty sure 2900 toughness is nigh impossible.
You could run sigils of Bloodlust/Corruption depending on power/condition setup and swap to another weapon with different sigils and keep the stacks.
You should probably consider using weapons with complimentary damage types (power/condition). So if using Axe/Torch, try switching to Shortbow or another Axe/Torch for your secondary since as you’ve noticed Longbow does no condition damage. If conditions are the route you wanna go down, since you like the burning, go after sigils that apply additional conditions, add to condition duration, add to condition damage, or stack might.
The knockdown from dogs is 2 sec on a 40 sec CD, so it wouldn’t be worth slotting Impact.
Boons and Conditions can either stack in duration or intensity.
For boons examples would be Swiftness or Regeneration (duration) vs. Might (intensity).
For conditions examples would be Burning or Poison (duration) vs. Bleeding or Confusion (intensity).
I hope that helps.
What they’re referring to are things like the movement speed bonuses provided by signets and traits. Just like the bolded portion of the description states.
The 25% bonus I get from the Warrior’s Swiftness trait or Signet of the Locust on my Necro don’t stack with the 33% movement speed bonus from Swiftness.
If I however have activated Signet of Rage for 30 sec of Swiftness, then activated Warhorn #4 for 10 sec of Swiftness I’d net 40 sec of Swiftness opposed to 66% movement speed increase.
Sw/Shield + Hammer for WvW
traits
x/10/30/x/30Unsuspecting foe
shield master/clenseing ire/ merciless hammer
signet mastery/mobile strikes/burst masteryUse Sword leap + Hammer burst to get away
Have a warhorn and apply 100% swiftness
Use runes of Lyssa for condition clense when needed
Valk armor + Cav trinkets
sigil of impact on hammer

Dolyak Signet, Berserkers stance, Signet of stamina/ bulls rush/endure pain
Very high hits 5k earth shakers quite often Very mobile, very fun Hard to master but when you get good at it it’s very reliable.
Same trait distribution and weapon setup, but a different take on the build.

Regarding trinkets those should be priority zerker because of the higher return on investment for Crit Damage. If you’re going to swap out gear for Knights for example to toughen up start with armor.
What area of the game will you be spending most of your time? PvP/WvW/PvE?
Regarding kits they have their own damage value of 969. Stats on weapons and sigils are however retained when using kits.
If you’re short on cash to buy gear at that level you’re probably trying to buy gear you don’t need like rares. Stick to blue/green since you’ll outgrow it so fast it’s not worth dropping cash on the more expensive rares.
If it’s purely PvE and you can avoid taking significant damage and/or heal what damage you do take, then sure go for full Zerker. Generally you don’t take trait lines to compensate for stats your gear lacks, but for the traits themselves.
I don’t play that spec, but I believe you might want to swap the Axe for a Mace. That way you can try to force a stunbreak off Shield Bash/Pommel Bash leaving them open for a Skull Crack > 100B. Traits and utils look a little off too from what I’ve seen going along with the usual M/Sh + GS builds. Dig a little and you should find a few here.
Double Axes are fine for leveling, but Axe/Mace outshines them in dungeons, and there are usually better options in PvP/WvW.
Seras likening blowing your elixirs to stack might with HGH is exactly what the case is with Static Discharge. The same could be said for Warrior’s that run shout healing builds. Damage is Static Discharge’s tactic.
You have a whole set of abilities Elixirs/toolbelt/Shouts/etc. that now have a secondary(and in some cases tertiary) function.
@ Conan:
When I’m playing HGH I’m chugging H/B and tossing both almost on cooldown to keep might stacks up, all the while crossing my fingers for Boons I need from the RNG gods. Is that a crutch too? It’s equally as mindless.
I don’t understand why you think Rifle should be the only thing doing the damage. It’s not how the profession is designed. Half of the Rifle abilities (not counting auto-attack) are for control. Use it how it’s intended, supplement your damage from other sources, and kill stuff.
Correct (but seriously, forget about the damage they do).

I’m pretty sure no one cares about Rocket Boot’s damage. It’s not why you take slot Gadget.
I wish our rifle was a RIFLE not a pseudo shotgun. just doesn’t feel right running up to a mob point blank with a sniper rifle
I wish our rifle was actually a full-blown shotgun and that all skills scaled up in close range. I don’t want my engi to be a warrior.
^This
Engineer by design is a mid-range fighter. Our Rifle is functionally a shotgun, and that should be reflected in it’s entire skill set. Rifle 3 and 5 already benefit from being toe to toe as opposed to max range. Overcharged Shot should function exactly like Blunderbuss where at 100 range it does more damage. Rifle 1 should function like Ranger’s Long Range Shot, but have damage increase as you close in range. This would also increase the reward for the risk we’re already taking to get max damage out of this weapon.
Thank you very much for the very helpful info! Btw I OC’d my CPU and I’m running at 3.6Ghz now.
You should probably have no issues running a gtx 650(ti)/660 or comparable in that case.
And I’d like to echo what Behellagh said. When I was running my old setup with a core2duo E6750 (iirc) and GT240 turning down/off reflections and shadows made the biggest dent in FPS. So if you get a new GPU and you find your bottlenecking look to there first.
It sounds like you should just change WASD to ESDF and rebind keys around that.
It does a small blast of damage where you “take off”. It’s also a blast finisher, removes immob/cripple/chill, and is a gap closer/creator.
If you’re using either the 25% speed boost from traits and/or have reliable swiftness (SoR) then sure it’s fine for roaming.
Sword/Shield + Longbow can go either way. Condition or Power. Since you lack Torment (from off-hand sword) though I might lean towards power. Try it out in the mists though.
If you get hate tells from stealth spammers, and people trying to kite you because you’re nullifying both tactics then you’re doing it right. I take it by the title of the thread you proceeded to win said fights. So the’re just kitten ed they got outplayed by someone they thought was gonna be a free kill.
You could give 0/10/30/0/30 a whirl with Axe/Shield + Hammer. I prefer Sword to Axe after they changed Axe 1 and overhauled Sword. Cripple on Sword 1, mobility/cripple on Sword 2 and Final Thrust hits almost as hard as Eviscerate <50% (plus you don’t blow your adrenaline). To each their own though.
Or you could take a look at this Axe/Shield build.

- Most of the traits remained unchanged aside from the Firearms line and Kit Refinement.
- Rocket Boots is also a blast finisher now.
- Elixir Gun toolbelt became a stunbreak, and added a blast finisher to #4.

I really have no idea if it’d bottleneck your CPU, but just did a quick search. There’s one suggestion for someone running your CPU to upgrade to a 660ti if not willing to overclock, so you shouldn’t hit any bottleneck (based on that).
My hope is that when they add new weapons/kits/utilities they give us power-based single target options. Something we’re completely reliant on SD for at the moment.
Yes please. Now there’s something I can get behind.
I meant when you activate Rocket Boots (not the toolbelt) it stops you briefly at the end of the animation. Something that actually needs a fix, unlike anything in the OP.
This thread will basically be an open discussion on how to buff our non-condition based builds.
Why do they need to be buffed?
^This
Why don’t you put pressure on fixing stuff that is broken like Rocket Boots instead of dreaming up fixes to problems that don’t exist?
If your biggest gripe with Static Discharge is a 1/4-1/2 sec cast time on toolbelt skills, which I don’t recall ever being an issue in the past, then the build is in a pretty good place.
As conditions are not able to crit Precision would not be much use.
FALSE. Precision is of use to professions that benefit from traits that apply conditions on crit (Warrior, Necro, Engineer, Ranger, Mesmer), and should at least not be ignored. The bleed on crit is especially nice for masking heavier hitting conditions you’d like to avoid being cleansed.
“It depends” is going to be the answer.
Power/Precision will not bring nearly as much benefit to a condition spec, so it will not be best for all.
How do you want to play your guardian? What part of the game will you be playing in most? PvP/PvE/WvW
Answer that and go from there. If you’re starting from scratch start with rare gear as it’s cheaper, and/or playtest some in the mists.
600W PSU should be fine.
Stepping up the GPU and RAM should fix your issues. I was running a GT240 and 4gb on an older core 2 duo processor (E6xxx I believe) with slightly lower FPS than you’re getting now last year. i5 3570, gtx660, 8gb (on a 450W PSU) is now almost double the FPS.
I use Zerk weapons and Trinkets with Soldier Armor for my WvW build and it works for me.
Runes are likely going to change based on your build and what you’re playing. PvP/WvW/PvE.
After you have Speedy Kits and Static Discharge the last pick is up to you. I happen to like the cripple on Throw Wrench, and the lower CDs on TK skills…
Wait, Power Wrench trait adds cripple to the Throw Wrench toolbelt too? I need to read better. That…changes things.
Yup. Power Wrench basically turns Throw Wrench into Bladetrail(Warrior).
After you have Speedy Kits and Static Discharge the last pick is up to you. I happen to like the cripple on Throw Wrench, and the lower CDs on TK skills. I tend to use Magnet Pull a lot. I can definitely see Adrenal Implants or Speedy Gadgets(if you run Goggles and Boots) being viable, but not so much Scope since your Rifle burst is inside 600 range. So it would really only effect your autoattack and toolbelt/SD.
As for Modified Ammo, I haven’t really got a chance to mess around with that one all to be honest, but I can definitely see it being a winner over Rifle Mod.
You can use main-hand sword without diving into conditions, but once you go Sword/Sword you’re in condition territory.
You can definitely run a Rifle + Sword/Warhorn sniper in WvW. I have no idea how it’ll play in PvE though. You basically want to stack up as much Zerk gear as possible prioritizing trinkets/gems as that’s where your best return on investment is as far as Crit % goes.
Why would you be dodging any other time than when you have to, aside from screwing around? In which case maintaining that 10% damage buff is inconsequential.
Engineer was originally supposed to be a Soldier, but got demoted to Adventurer.
You’re probably looking at a Violation, and it would probably be best to have the player the violation was against be the one who is submitting the report.
And yes, she will have to create a support account. I found that bewildering as well when I had to contact support about something last year.
The worst thing is blind…
^This
You could probably run the usual Zerk 30/0/0/10/30 and just grab the axe traits.
Looks like you’re using low level and/or low quality gear. And on top of that it looks like a mish-mash of stats giving you no focus.
If P/P is your thing I’d suggest you look at the HGH builds and start gearing for condition damage. Mostly Rabid with some Carrion/Rampager mixed in to balance it out.
You can buy a full Rabid set (no weapons) from the Orr Temples with karma. You just need to find a karma train to start racking that stuff up. IIRC you need 44k per piece.
Bursty usually means NOT going for conditions. Try Rifle SD perhaps.
