What a bout something like this?
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fJAQNAneRjMd0FaZIWhwJagfgC7t3CmDgBoB0lGA-TlSDAB9o8jiDBA3HBgZU/Jn9HO4BAkgSQQ0HAg5PJOBAkBgZLA-w
Sticking with your current weapon set, but moving in a different direction. Still keeps you at ~3k armor and 20K+ HP. You could easily swap a point from Defense into Discipline to pick up Vigorous Focus at the cost of 180 power and 50 toughness. Also swapable would be zerk stance/endure pain for Bulls Rush. And if you’re really having trouble sticking on target then you could move 2 pts from Power to Tactics for Leg Specialist
I generally only run 2 traps (Spike and Flame) when running a Trapper spec. The 3rd slot usually being filled with either SotH or LR.
Have you looked at the GS/Axe+Shield meta?
http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Warrior_-_GS_Axe/Shield_Roamer
Building off that and making it more forgiving I wouldn’t change much aside from swapping to Knight armor and moving 2 pts to Defense for Defy Pain. Having Spiked Armor also makes up for lost power switching to Knight armor.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fJAQNAR3ejMd0FaZImdwJaAmgCdnPBfwx0OAU+EFBA-TlSDAB9o8jiLAA3PAgZU/5gjAQCKBBR3AAm/k4gAQz+DkCgJhRA-w
As always swap Endure Pain for Signet of Stamina or Berserker Stance if you’re having trouble with condis. I probably wouldn’t switch to Soldier weaps as you’ve done because you’ve already lost a bunch of potential crit damage in the Knights armor.
Just keep in mind, with power Warrior at least, the tankier you get the less likely you are to kill what you’re after.
Also look into Hammer/GS. I know you said you hated carrying around a Hammer for RP reasons, but give it a try.
http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Warrior_-_Hammer/GS_Roamer
Also swapping the armor for Knights will get you near that 3k armor mark and the build innately has 21K HP.

I would follow through on the support request. The worst they can say is no.
1. Warrior is definitely a good place to start, but I think you might be looking at GW2 combat through the eyes of someone who’s played some other MMOs that boil combat down to as little as a spreadsheet, a stopwatch, and don’t stand in red circles. There’s no such thing as % dodge or % block in GW2. In this game you’re not going to block attacks simply because you’ve equipped a shield or dodge an attack simply because you have a high dodge score. You have to hold up your Shield (or MH Mace/OH Sword) to block, and you have to hit your dodge key or use a skill which evades (GS #3) to evade an attack. There are no badarse tanky guys in this game.
2. Yes Bleeds and other conditions can technically be easily removed, but when playing with conditions you have to apply them faster than they can be cleansed and if it’s in your power to prevent them from being cleansed altogether to do so. Also, it may take a few seconds, but it’s not that hard to get someone loaded back up with conditions not long after they’ve cleansed.
3. All professions have to wrestle with the meta. It’s hardly exclusive to Warriors. There’s a lot more variety on the PvP/WvW end than PvE though. If PvP is your main focus experiment away since changing runes, sigils and amulets doesn’t cost you anything.
You’re not going to be able to get a feel for how the prof will really play until you hit 80. To get a better idea go into the mists as soon as you can (I don’t remember what the entry level is these days) and test out some builds for profs you think you’d want to play.
If you hadn’t been following GW2 news the Ranger will be getting an option to specialize into a Druid in the upcoming expansion.
I’d probably recommend a Warrior.
I play both characters (in fact, I play at all of them) and both are enjoyable in their own way. I will say that if this is your FIRST character to take to 80, PLEASE don’t learn combat mechanics on a Ranger.
While the Ranger is a high survival character, what makes them very survivable also teaches the player some lazy habits in terms of combat. Someone who has never played another character can easily fall into the hang back, strike from the back constantly mentality that the Ranger does so well.
The problem with this is you likely never learn to properly kite an enemy, dodge a heavy attack, use avoidance skills at the right time or how to deal with a mob when you don’t have a built in tank (your pet). I love playing my Ranger but if you learn to play GW2 combat with one, you are doing yourself (and others you eventually play with) a disservice.
Just my 2 coppers on the subject.
I’m going to second this. I’d advise against a Ranger as a first character.
Well warriors lack both (self-provided) stealth and magic. They’re also slanted towards the melee end. As far as strategy goes every prof needs to employ strategy to be effective unless you’re opponent is a target golem.
Don’t plan on chaining too many skills together as you’ve laid out. You’re going to want to be constantly reassessing your situation so you can react accordingly. And take a look at this for some ideas on GS/S+X. http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Warrior_-_GS_S/x_Roamer
You have to stop moving completely for about face to work in my experience. So can’t be pressing any movement keys or right mouse. You may be able to have left mouse pressed, but I’m not sure since when I want to about face I’ll generally make sure not to hit any mouse buttons.
You guessed it. Sorry I didn’t specify.
SB has a place in condi/celestial builds, namely condi survival and stealth trapper. Typically I’ll run SB/A+D instead of S+T/A+D because frankly I’m not that great with the sword.
GW2 doesn’t have factions in the way TESO or WAR(only other RvR game I’ve played has. You simply play against other servers.
The great thing about gw2 is that you can play you higher level characters alongside lowbies without it being a complete carry for them. So if you liked your Ele you don’t have to start over. Just play with them until they’ve caught up.
I haven’t leveled a new character successfully since the NPE.
If you find things are getting stale you could change up how you’re playing. Either swap weapons, check out other zones, do some PvP/WvW, or take a trip over to EotM.
Welcome to the head scratcher that has had Warriors puzzled since (pre?)release. Warrior profession page clearly shows them with a 2handed axe, yet there is no such weapon in the game.
I’d expect more focus on the pet, AE and debuffs/soft CC. I’m gonna be pretty miffed if there’s no shape shifting too as it’s a hallmark “Druid” ability.
make shield bash into a parry skill with a lower CD and if you cancel the parry block channel you just bop them for some damage and some debuff or something.
No
Terms Of Use, User Agreement, etc. whatever you want to call it. Same reason you can’t macro a double tap directional dodge on your Naga.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/support/Directional-Dodge-Macro-Allowed
Well they’re going to have double the amount of skills to balance, so I don’t think dev resources will be moved to policing WvW.
Pretty sure TOU says only one action per keystroke is allowed.
Purely for getting around the map as fast as possible I’d equip Signet of the Hunt, Lightning Reflexes, Greatsword and Sword. Sword offhand is up to you. Also trait for Soften the Fall and Martial Mastery. Should have enough Evades and mobility to stay out of trouble. Only thing that you have no control over is getting in towers and keeps you don’t control. Borderlands change weekly (although on occasion you may not change) and if you have the patience you should be able to get all of Eternal Battlegrounds given enough time.
About Face > Hornet’s Sting > About Face > Monarch’s Leap > Swap > Swoop
You should be able to get in 2 leaps per swap.
Just don’t use longbow skill 4 when there is people around.
Have fun getting that one to sink in.
If your enemy is on target then you don’t need to keep tapping “1”, just press it once and it will auto-attack.
Provided #1 is set to auto-cast.
Instead of making a new character altogether, why not just get a Condi set for your Ranger and try either Condi Survival or Trapper?
For starters I’m not sure why you’re using Numpad.
Your left hand should be sitting on WASD (Fwd, Strafe Left, Back, Strafe Right) or somewhere there about, and using your mouse to look/turn (Left Click/Right Click).
After that typically weapon attacks are left as 1-5 on keyboard and profession skills, utilities, etc. are rebound to be more accessible to the left hand.
There was a recent thread on various keybinding schemes.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/keys-7-9/first#post4739406
Also here’s a GW2 keybinding guide that uses a non-WASD keybind setup.
http://taugrim.com/2012/06/27/guide-to-guild-wars-2-keybinds/
I’ve run an older hybrid build by Flow as a solo flipper with some occasional zerg action.
Would be nice to have Stance Duration trait also affect Shield Stance.
Are you getting any odd behavior like freezes, stuttering or crashes? A few people have reported issues in the past that turned out to be overclocked CPUs and/or GPUs overheating and throttling back.
I play with an i5, 8GB and GTX660 2GB and I’m getting double what you’re reporting in higher stress situations on high but with frame limiter set to 60 and shadows off.
Well as per the HoT trailer it’s gonna be a Hammer-wielding Engineer with Batteries Not Included style bots. The bots in the video could be something as simple as a personal mobile mine field, or something along the lines of you maintain Protection as long as you have one bot up. Either way I’m psyched. Been itching for a new weapon for my Engi and I love Batteries Not Included.
Items purchased with Karma or Badges are not salvageable. Could that be the case?
You get access to your second weapon set at level 15. Definitely have a Staff as your second weapon. If you like Axe I’d recommend Warhorn. Traited it’ll give you perma-Swiftness from WH#5, and WH#4 is really nice for blocking heals/stomps/rezes in PvP/WvW. Focus if you need to stack up Vuln for bosses. And Dagger if you need Weakness, Blind and condition transfer.
Tried to do as little as possible to the default keybind scheme.
Movement: Fwd=W, Back=S, Strafe=A/D
Profession Mechanic: F1-F4
Weapon Skills: 1-5
Heal: Q
Utilities: Z,X,C
Elite: E
Dodge: V
About Face: R
Stomp: F
The general consensus was the following:
stun: initiates either a low-grade direct heal, a short regen, or knocks an opponent back/down as well as stunning for 1 second
block: removes 1 condition for each second of blocking
Shield Bash: I’d like a longer duration (up to 1.5 sec) to make landing Final Thrust/Eviscerate a tad easier, but aside from that I wouldn’t change it. Shield doesn’t need a heal/regen, and knocking back in addition to a stun doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. The existing Leap finisher is your “something extra”.
Shield Stance: I don’t have issue with this. A 3 sec Block is a long time. It’s half the CD of Endure Pain and only 1 sec duration less, minus the stun break. So all around a solid ability. I’d take condi removal/sec on block via trait, but not base.
I’m sure if we think about it we’ll realize most of the times a power ranger only killed us because:
• We’re not paying attention and get pew pewed from behind
• We engage them in open field without swapping in reflect utilities
• We’re already fighting someone else and get focused
• We play a necro and thus have a legitimate excuse
• We get outplayed but don’t want to admit it
In decreasing order of likelihood?
As for me… It’s been beaten to death but my complaint about Rangers (my Ranger is in my current rotation, so this counts as a Ranger complaining about Rangers) isn’t so much about Rangers, but about professions who have access to knockbacks not being able to keep it in in their pants.
For starters would you care to post a build link to what you’re currently using in WvW? If the only changes to what you last reported are what you listed in this latest post it’s probably just a combination of making a few tweaks to make your build more WvW friendly and practice.
Should I have added, “Looks like you just about nailed it!” ?
I’m not really an expert or anything, but after the trait changes last year build don’t really come into there own until the level cap. But I am sure that someone more familiar with necromancer (I haven’t leveled one since before the NPE/trait changes) will point you in the right direction.
Pretty much this. Since they revamped the trait system you don’t even get your first trait until level 30 (and only 1 per 6 levels after that not counting the final one), so any builds anyone may recommend wouldn’t flesh out until level cap.
Dual Wield Agility just like Dual Wield doesn’t apply when Warhorn or Shield are used as off-hand. It must be an Axe/Sword/Mace.
QoL: Pet stow LOCKED until it ordered to do something, and while Pets are not attacking (just moving around us or even on stow), We Rangers get some buff.
Since this is the only way that keeps us in balance when AN wants to sacrifice our powers on behalf of a terribly stupid AI Pet.
This would be really nice. To elaborate I’d envision the pet in this scenario working out something like a Signet in that different pet families would offer a passive buff when stowed so that in environments where pets are useless and/or a liability you’re no penalized for bringing your Ranger. Also something like this could be a trait instead of a base-level passive.
That description is most befitting Ranger.
Could try 0/2/6/2/4 GS/Sw-A with dual birds and a mix of zerk/cav/knight.
Paralization in Hammer is a waste. At 3 bars the extended duration is very likely disrupted by your’s or someone else’s hard CC. Used to play an Unsuspecting Foe build a long time ago. It had good CC and mobility. Fun for knocking people around. If I had to make it again I’d do something like this.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fJAQNAseSjMd02ZZImdQKaAlgCdofBlwx2OAUOFXBA-T1CCABCp0Z4DBgP7PUj6PA8AAKRfQBm/ISZ0DKBr4IAcxJAgMALbB-w
You’d only need 30% crit. Also the sigils on Sw/Sh are up to you but Impact and Doom on Hammer I probably wouldn’t mess with. I go with Shield over Mace for a few reasons. Block of course since were not running Defy Pain, and Shield Bash doubles as a stun to set up Final Thrust and an Immo break.
I haven’t touched Unsuspecting Foe since they moved it to Master so it might suck, but worth a shot. Sounds like what you’re after.
I do believe birds have a longer range on their attacks though compared to other melee pets (300 vs 130). I haven’t made a study of how often birds miss compared to other melee pets though.
i just reach lvl 80 and spend a lot of gold to get the lvl 80 gear. so does anyone know who to make gold
For future reference if gold is in short supply or you are new to the game you should use dungeon, WvW and/or temple vendors to equip your characters. You will save a lot of coin this way. Just remember you can’t salvage this gear (you can salvage some of the dungeon armor) so be wary of putting expensive sigil/runes into them.
Once you figure out how to make coin and know which build is right for you than you can drop a lot of gold on armor, weapons, sigils and runes.
/This
A “Stow Pet” hotkey would be a nice QoL improvement for BM specs using Mighty Swap and Vigorous Training.
Castien, here is my short bow build that I used for 100% map completion (“Been there, done that”):
Essentially:
2/0/6/0/6
All Settler for armor and weapons (I buy exotics off the TP when I hit 80)
Superior runes of the undead
Shortbow
Axe+Torch
Troll Unguent, Lightning reflexes, Muddy terrain, Signet of the hunt, Entangle
Pets are totally up to you but I was full on ranged tank so I used Devourers (it’s also a Charr thing)My two cents on Sword/Dagger for your second weapon set: I did not care for it. Yes the evades are fine but you’re not really killing anything, you’re just dodging and applying poison. With Axe +Torch you can really ramp up the condition damage, not to mention torch was just improved in latest balance patch.
Also: Even if you’re maining short bow, I don’t think you really need the reduced cool down trait. Short bow cool downs are pretty good to begin with.
I also use this build in WvW and sPvP and do fine. Not great, but fine. Just keep your distance and always, always open with Muddy Terrain to put your opponent on the defensive. Once they burn their “cure immobilize” skill to escape Muddy Terrain, you can hit them with Entangle.
I’ve had enough fun with this build that I consider it my main. I have five 80’s in different classes but this odd little condition/toughness ranged tank build is the most fun, even if it’s not the most powerful.
Since Malicious Training may or may not be bugged (I haven’t tested lately) I’d go with Keen Edge and some other changes. Oakheart Salve could easily be swapped to OffhandTraining if you wanted. The flowers since there are no Settler jewels I’m aware of. Pets are a preference. I just went with birds for the high crit chance to go with Rending Attacks.
