I’m using a Midnight Fire/Midnight Rose/Midnight Yew theme at the moment and liking it. Sneakthief chest, gloves, legs, feet, Aurora shoulders, and Subterfuge Hood.

On my Engi I have Midnight Blue (or Nightshade can’t remember which) with Midnight Rose, Midnight Fire, and I think Ash or one of the other grey dyes. He’s in the full Aurora set.

You could try and get supporty with an Axe/Wh + Longbow perhaps. I have no idea how well these would work though.

Active and passive condition management.

Purely active condition management, and a bit more offensive. You’re a lot more flexible with food here so you could go for mango pies or might stacking for example if you like.

These may be total garbage, but if you had to come up with a more support oriented Axe build these seems like they could be an option.

Not that I’m aware of. I’m pretty sure Axe is the highest raw dps weapon we have, but I could be wrong.

Mace (weakness, block, daze, stun) or Sword (cripple, immobilize, leap) would be your more supporty options for a MH weapon.

Interesting. I’ll have to mess around with it, and I prefer sube dai’s setup. I’ve always shyed away from Healing Spring because of the long CD and it not being mobile, but the capabilities are huge with Swoop and a Drake. I had experimented with spotter a while back. I’m assuming when Keen Edge goes off it procs SotF? Time to creep out of the comfort zone perhaps and try using SotF (and more Survival skills). On the plus side I do have a full set if ascended cav trinkets burning a hole in my bags from an old build on a diff character. Sube’s setup does also look like it’d be better for group play with the water field and spotter. Any preferred pets for something like this? I ran Spider/Wolf when experimenting with MoC, but now its been River Drake/Wolf.

Hmm… Fox’s build link from that vid is a MoC build with EB (and SoR) and therefore no SotF. I had thought about going MoC (with EB not SotF), but I’d miss Evasive Purity too much. If I get to a point where I need more on demand condition removal I can always switch over to SotF, but right now I prefer the stability options.

I hate to bump an old thread, but there’s not a whole lot of talk about builds like this around. I came to be playing a very similar build due to not having much fun with either bow and wanting a power build.

I’m not running with priority on Might stacking because I’m too cheap for Hoelbrak/Strength.

Here’s what I’m currently using. Built primarily for soloing camps and skirmishing with the odd duel along the road.

Also there’s Might on heal food you might wanna look into.

Two builds--What's the difference?

Sagramor.7395

Well what type of play will you be doing with your Ranger? Solo Roaming, Havoc (small group roaming), Zerg busting, GvG, or ZvZ?

Roaming Sniper is exactly what the name implies. Solo Roaming in WvW, and Id play this or something very similar is I had any inclination to play a Longbow as a solo roamer.

The other build looks more like a larger scale combat oriented build (the telltale Sigil of Restoration). There are a few things that don’t sit right however.

A very high crit chance with no on crit effects.
- Cond Duration food with no complimentary runes.

It just feels wrong on the surface. Not even taking into account that it’s a Ranger build or that it’s a LB large scale combat spec.

It’s a well documented issue that spans just about all movement abilities as far as I know. Has to do with your movement essentially getting blocked by a blade of grass or a slight change in elevation. If you dont want to deal with it play a profession with teleports instead of leaps because it doesn’t seem like its getting fixed any time soon.

The thing holding axe main hand back is the fact its auto attack does pathetic damage. The auto attack needs to be buffed.

I’ve written this suggestion several times for mainhand axe #1:

Instead of dividing the damage to 33.33% for each bounce, the first hit should hit harder, and the (possible) following two for lower damage. For example 50%->25%->25%, 60%->20%->20% or maybe even 70%->20%->10%.

Something like this would be huge for Axe. I would also suggest putting a different non-damaging condition on Axe #2. Since the only trait that buffs Axe adds ferocity it should not be applying any damaging conditions.

I’m actually okay with whirling defense being a stationary ability.

Sagramor.7395

For starters it’s Bruiser, not Brusier. And it’s not all that new of a concept.
Secondly if it’s for PvP why are you not using the PvP builder?

A Moment of Clarity build for WvW/PvE (since you used that builder) might be something like what you were going for. If you need more Condi removal just swap one of the Signets for SoR.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQJAVRjEq0waFLGsw1agFhqdHcBbA7xdACAX7wBrawA-TVCFABspDQJlfYpEEgHAQhq/IwVAgm9HSTTwCHCASBUuyI-w

If you gave a better idea as to the focus of the build we could help you out a lot more. What game mode (PvP, WvW or PvE) will you be playing and what role? I know you said PvP, yet you used the PvE builder. Also, simply saying “Bruiser” and defining it as tanky DPS doesn’t say what you want out of the build. It describes the build, but describing the one you originally posted as tanky DPS is incorrect as has been pointed out. The traits are kind of all over the place.

Since you used the PvE builder, but said the build was for PvP I’m going to assume you meant WvW. In WvW you have your solo roamers, your small group (havoc) roamers, mid size skirmishes of 10-15 (includes GvG), or do you just wanna run with the blob and tag as much as possible? In the last case would you rather be running with the driver, mid-line, or back-line?

As for Might stacking during RaO goes I’d make sure you’ve got SB equipped and use a pet with a fast (1/4 sec) attack speed such as dogs, moas (extra Daze could be nice), drakes, or pigs. Devourers have a slow (1 sec) attack speed, but whether or not both barbs would count towards Might stacks I don’t know. I just built it with standard Drakehound/Wolf. Not sure how much emphasis you want to put on Might stacking during RaO if you don’t have might stacking elsewhere in the build.

Regarding LB vs SB they both have their place, but in a Bruiser type build where you’re presumably going to be in melee range (if not very close to it) SB may have an edge.

Hope this helps.

I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure Healing doesn’t affect Parasitic Contagion. Considering siphoning on Necro is pretty lackluster as it is, I would ditch the idea of making use of siphons at all and instead focus on getting up as many Bleed stacks as possible as fast as possible with Condition Duration. And remember you don’t receiving any healing while in Deathshroud, so don’t linger unless you have to. Get in fire off what you need to and get out.

Perhaps something like this.

At level 33 though you’re not going to be able to flesh out a build. PvE really isn’t an issue. For EOTM I hate to say it but just grab a shortbow and ride the train trying tag as many as possible while not getting yourself killed. In WvW at that level see comment on EOTM for zerging, otherwise just run supply and try not to get yourself killed.

Thoughts and observations on axe

Sagramor.7395

What Necro build/playstyle should have the axe as it’s primary weapon?

I’ve used axe/staff in WvW with wells when I don’t want to get close to the hammer train, but it’s more fun to use dagger instead.

I too was using Axe/Wh & Staff with Wells until the patch, then switched to Axe/Wh & Staff hybrid. I wouldn’t necessarily say that Axe is the primary weapon since the build relies on constant weapon swaps. It’s kind of like playing a double or triple kit Engineer.

As far as QoL improvements for Axe

  1. Narrow radius 3 target cleave. Also slow and very telegraphed (fix it).
  2. see above
  3. Needs a finisher either Whirl or Blast and a shorter cast time.

If you want pure melee you could Sw/X & GS using either Dagger or Axe on your off-hand depending on your comp and playstyle. Axe will bring the missile reflect and a Pull, but you get the ranged Cripple, Evade and Poison on Dagger.

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend P/P for FT. P/S or Rifle would be better. Pick whichever suits your needs. When I used to play FT for open world PvE I almost never left FT, so don’t worry about sitting in FT the whole time. You’ll only want to pop out to shoot off a few weapon skills and then hop back in to maintain your Might stacks.

I haven’t played FT in a long time, and have never really spent any time getting to know anything but Healing Turret but you could try something like this for PvE.

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fdAQJAqelUUpWrVVxmKseJSdBB6AUgDI6EGjQD-TFSDgAMPAgelfs7P8q+T1JAAUPAg5PFlgECo8WA-w

The last 2 points you can put anywhere. Also you could swap around the Turrets based on your needs, whether it it be the boons from Experimental Turrets or the turrets themselves.
