Hey!
Im new to GW2 and I’m looking for a nice class, between Ranger, Necro, Guard, Warrior, Mesmer.
I like to be:
- A funny class, maybe with skills, which help in JPs
Engineer!
Soulbound just means you can’t equip them on another character. It’s possible your Soulbound gear was a quest reward from your personal story.
You can bind a key to sheath/unsheath. I dunno about keeping them out full time though.
My take on Hammer + Sword/Shield
- Sample principle as Katsu’s, just a different take on it.

I think you need to post your build.
Heya. Since Engineers arent… so great at the moment, I’ve relegated mine to farming duty now. Is there any specific farming spec that is a cut above the rest? My current spec is flamethrower based with some restorative capabilities from what I recall.
Lol, in what area is engineer not so great at the moment? Literally the only area of the game that engi is struggling is in GvG because of retal and lack of stability which makes them susceptible to the guardian/warrior pain train. They are rocking stuff in sPvP, small group and solo roam in WvW, and as far as pve goes people are just kittens and still think “Warrior is top damage because 100b” and they can’t be bothered to figure out how dps is actually calculated.

You may have to do a little digging since the search essentially useless, but there are plenty of guides and builds right here.
You could also check out places like gw2guru (forum), intothemists (guides only), etc.
Why not use Shield in place of off-hand Mace? The interrupt is on the same CD and you get another block.
The only way you’re gonna get around massive condition application is 409 (and a lot of elixirs), which is not an option in a kit build.
This is essentially what I run, but why not take Hair Trigger? Bring Static Shot down to 12 sec, and besides Vulnerability doesn’t affect condition damage.
Rifle + Sword/Warhorn Warrior with Shouts and Battle Standard perhaps. Maybe 0/30/0/20/20. Kind of a support + sniper. Could also go 0/30/0/30/10 for healing Shouts if you want.
Mesmer take a while to get rolling, but don’t get discouraged. I’m with The Baws. Play something a little more complex, and Mesmer definitely is one of the options there along with Engineer and Elementalist.
Dagger/Warhorn & Axe/Focus 20[VI, VIII]/0/0/0/15[VI] to start. You want to aim for 30/x/x/x/30. Use Consume Conditions for your heal and at least Well of Suffering. Elite is up to you, since you may want to swap situationally, as are the other 2 utility slots. It’s a lot more in and out of Death Shroud than a condition build.
The problem with 2H Axe is that just about ever ability that would appear on it’s bar already exists (or there’s something very similar) on another weapon.
And yea, putting an Endurance cost into weapon abilities is just a stupid idea.

Just tested.
Sagramor and the GW2 Wiki are correct: the adrenaline cost is the same and then a part of adrenaline is refunded. So even with Burst Mastery you remove 3 conditions at full adrenaline.
Thanks for the test. I could’ve sworn there was a thread on this a while back, and that was the conclusion they came to.
But grenades are almost entirely useless for 1v1, or small groups.
This isn’t true. I think you just need more practice using grenades.
That too.
You could keep your GS/LB and try 0/30/20/0/20 for some nice Might stacking.
Pretty sure it’s supposed to remove 3 conditions even with Burst Mastery.
Why not give P/P GK HGH a try?
Is that grenade AND bomb, or grenade OR bomb?
You could run P/S HT/BK/TK/EG with Apothecary/Settler (Shaman) gear as a bunker.
Account bound just means that it can be purchased by one character, dropped in the bank, picked up by another character and learned. All on the same account of course. At least that’s how I understand it. So only that character that learns the recipe will be able to produce that item.
There’s no reason for two characters on the same account to need the same crafting recipe for an inscription/insignia that goes across crafting disciplines aside from convenience.
I have a friend who plays caster classes but refuses to do anything beyond dps because he doesn’t like to multi-task.
Sounds like a personal problem.
Guardian is the closest thing to a WoW Paladin, and it should be pretty obvious (especially to someone who’s clocked some time on the game) that Guardian is where you should be if you’re looking for a WoW Paladin proxy.
Farming 85 gold will be 500x quicker than farming the mats.

The drop rate is so low it’s much quicker to just farm the cash.
Yea, that’s the build. I use GK/TK/RB. What I meant by lack of synergy is that there aren’t any common traits like there are with FT. EG is great situationally (especially for the stun break), but I’d rather slot something that’s useful 100% of the time. What works for me may not work for you, so to each their own.
For a bunker build in sPvP I’ll run P/S HT/BK/TK/EG though. That’s fun.
You don’t generally take Rifle in a condition build. You want the Poison, Confusion and Blind as well. In this case you opt for the Shield for utility/defense over off-hand Pistol.
FT and GK seem like an odd mix. Try Bomb Kit for when range isn’t an option.
Thx much for the help. Mesmer had a real issue being effective before level 40, so I get the idea that some builds aren’t viable early.
I guess I’ll try to play what’s fun and helpful in a group as I level and see what things look like when I reach 80.
Thx again!
That’s the spirit. Have fun and experiment. No better way to learn your class (ahem profession).
Grenades and EG really have no synergy.
You could do Grenades with either 409/HGH or Kits. I’m giving the kit version a try as of last night. Basically Korishi’s, but with Rocket Boots instead of Bomb Kit. I want to like Bomb Kit, but without stability I’ve been having trouble getting good results out of it.
Just make a “Colorblind Mode” in the settings somewhere to toggle on the new colors.
For basic condition damage grab Scepter/Dagger and Staff, stack up Rabid gear, and put 20 points into Curses for Hemophilia and Master of Corruption. For utilities I’d go Blood is Power, Epidemic, and Signet of the Locust (just so getting around is a bit easier). Heal is Consume Shadows, and Elite is Flesh Golem (unless you need another oh kitten button in which case grab Plague). You’ll be able to do a lot of killing, but you won’t be bringing in “the big hits”. It’ll be more like a screen filled with massive amounts of little hits.
For “the big hits” you want to go with a power build.
Kite while god-mode is up, reapply conditions (especially Blind), kite some more, profit?
Since P/P HGH condition has 2 on crit condition applying traits you definitely want that precision from Rabid. In my condition set I run full Rabid with Coral jewels aside from my Carrion weapons which I crafted before I could afford Rabid. Still can’t afford them because I’m spending those resources on other characters. Point is, try and get as much Rabid as possible and sub Carrion/Rampager when you can’t get Rabid.
Thieves dagger ‘4’ pulls out a completely different weapon and throws it at the target.
It would be cool for example, if Greatsword ‘4’ pulled out a chain and used the greatsword to pull the target back.
Thief dagger 4 is a dagger..
No, they throw a Ninja Star.
/sigh
Okay, so say they implement “Chain o’ Pain” Daecollo’s still gonna complain that it’s two telegraphed.
the only time a GS Warrior hits F1 is by accident.
Yeah, but I still like his idea. Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and again.
And yeah, we all know F1 is a very odd skill.
It sounds like it should have synergy with forceful greatsword, but in practice, the majority of GS users are running Zerkers Might and have 100% fury uptime, so they neither need more fury, nor care to use their adrenaline due to the 15% damage loss. There have been a thousand threads on redoing it, and yet here we are…..
I still favor it being an “uppercut” as the description states, with a launch instead of fury.
I’d be all for Arcing Slice being as the description states with a knockback. Alternative being put HB on F1 and put a parry (with a counter strike) on #2.

Next thing you they’ll be a banner add for Gunnar gaming glasses in the gem store.
really wtf , y on earth did you waste time even doing this ,
so many more things you could do , makes me sad
Waste time? its just changing 1 value in the code to change the color lol
Wasting time indeed. Think of all the meetings full of people much higher on the payroll than the programmer that went into that change.
I started playing engineer and elementalist.
but after going into their profession forums,
I see nothing but people saying how useless the classes are.
Don’t listen to whiners, or play with people who will pass you up because your profession “isn’t good enough”.
Oh and play a spec that’s viable. Every profession has at least one.
You’ll probably never be the best at everything, but as long as you’re playing a viable spec and know what you’re doing you’ll be fine.
Magic Find is calculated when the creature is killed.
Okay, so say they implement “Chain o’ Pain” Daecollo’s still gonna complain that it’s two telegraphed.
When swinging around a big 2-handed weapon it’s going to be noticeable unless you’re an Asura.
I actually don’t have issue with your “Chain o’Pain” proposal, but the elephant in the room on Greatsword is Arcing Slice, not Bladetrail. For starters it’s an overhead strike, but the description refers to it as an uppercut. Most importantly the only time a GS Warrior hits F1 is by accident.
If I throw up Shield Stance, and a Thief decides to start poking me with his/her Daggers I’m getting hit just not taking any damage. Anet in all it’s terminological ambiguity tends to equate getting hit with taking damage. I realize there’s a note on the wiki for Cleansing Ire stating that blocking an attack does not count as being hit.
I have the same gripe (and this has been talked to death) with blocked attacks not revealing Thieves.
The whole getting hit equating to taking damage thing (affecting both points I’ve just mentioned) probably stems from Aegis where you have a “magical” block.
As far as being OP goes it probably wouldn’t be. You can only gain so much adrenaline and Shield Stance is on a 30 sec CD the same as Signet of Fury and Healing Surge.
They’ll just scale up the damage. Perhaps after a condition is met, like an achievement for acquiring an Ascended weapon. I can’t see it being that big of an issue. Currently kit damage is on the level of the highest type available (Exotic). Why would that change when Ascended weapons are introduced?
P/P 409/HGH is pretty much the bees knees for condition damage. You can play a grenade variant (30/10/0/30/0), or a toolkit (10/10/20/30/0) variant (Mask’s).
There’s also P/S (Korishi’s) condition builds which use 2-3 kits if you don’t feel like 409/HGH.
Weapon stats remain in effect when using kits. Kit attack falls between Pistol and Rifle. The numbers you referenced are for a Rifle I believe.
Well the thing with Shield Stance is that unlike our other blocks it is a single function skill. It blocks all attacks over the duration. The other two have a counter if struck by a melee attack. So in order to compensate for not landing the counter, which would grant adrenaline, you get adrenaline via the skill. You can also cancel the block prematurely to gain that adrenaline.
What you’re bringing up with Cleansing Ire though is valid, and should probably be considered. I wouldn’t mind, nor would I see it as OP, to have Cleansing Ire to grant adrenaline on blocked hits. You’re still getting, hit, but it’s bouncing off your shield.
It’s along the same train of though as requiring the Burst to connect to clear conditions. There’s a disconnect between the Burst mechanic and the Cleansing Ire mechanic whereby the only way to get rid of Blind with Cleansing Ire is Combustive Shot.
Kits have their own damage stat. I believe it’s 969 @ 80 (scales with level).
On crit/kill sigils will proc regardless if you have your weapon or a kit equipped.
On swap sigils will trigger on a kit swap as well.
All sigils are subject to the same internal cooldowns, and rules as on a normal 2-weapon profession like a Warrior.
You can go as little as 30% crit in an Unsuspecting Foe build if you have good Fury up-time, and still achieve 100% crit.
I went the easy route and got my Soldier armor from Orr temples and got Zerk Weapons/Trinkets from WvW/Crafting (using a Cavalier/Beryl back piece to put me at an even 30% crit). You could go more Knights/Cavalierfor the extra toughness, but there’s a trade off. Which is better I can’t say but they’re different. Sacrifice some Attack and HP, for a nice chunk of Armor.
For where to get your gear.

Why use PVT gear and condition damage traits?
Well for a havoc team I’ll nix the Warhorn aside from exclusive travel use, since you probably won’t be dropping (min) 20 points in Tactics. Unless you really feel you want more group support.
Everything is contingent on your group makeup, and what your role will be really.
Something along the lines of Hammer + Sword/Shield 0/10/30/0/30 could be useful for you. It’s a good middle-path.
I’d say experiment with builds in the mists before you get to 80, play with the calculators online, research builds, ask your team for advice, and start experimenting in WvW soon to see what you’re going to like.
Well that build is reminiscent of a Hammer train ZvZ Warrior, which is designed more for group play, but it sounds like you’re doing a bit of solo roaming.
A few odd bits in your setup.
- Never seen only 5 points in Strength before.
- Only using one Stance, but traited for Vigor on Stance.
- Your attack is kinda low. Probably should switch from oil to stone.
What type of WvW are you, or do you want to be playing? Answer that and more help will be on the way.
i think the warriors weapon sets are in a very good place myself. (with the exception of rifle)
we don’t have a lot of boons tied to our weapons because as warriors we don’t wave our weapons about trying to get effects, we hit people with them.
we don’t have a lot of flashy effects on our weapons because as warriors we use our weapons to kill things, not put on light shows.
simple, brutal, direct, effective.
The problem is, our abilities are the most telegraphed.
I’m with Fiorella. If you don’t want telegraphed abilities go play Asura.
So far this thread boils down to go play an Asuran Guardian.
