….outside of tempest DH can really handle most 1v1s and such effectively, there isn’t really a class that can make a DH say, “Oh, no I definitely can’t handle that. He’s too strong”
Then you haven’t played in high tier PvP…. but you’re right, DH is easy in everything below Platinum Tier 1 Division.
DH is fine because the casuals are calling it “2 ez” in Gold while the real DH players are incapable of carrying teams like how an Ele, Ranger, or Mesmer would in high Plat/Legendary.
I’m not a “high tier” player by any means but i’m at least able to see exactly where DH is at and right now, we’re “in a [ugly] spot”.
(edited by Saiyan.1704)
Tier 1
Ele + Nec + Druid + War
Tier 2
Engi/Thief/Mesmer/DH/Rev
Considering you don’t have that mobile class, I would find a good engi/thief/mesmer or settle for DH/Rev.
Thank you to those who actually had a brain and voted NO.
NO ONE stacks dragonhunters/warriors/whatever the kitten in any DECENT division because it is SUBPAR and if you have trouble winning against teams with 2-3 dragonhunters then you shouldn’t have even been allowed to vote on the poll. I’m looking at you, bronze quacks.
This change would’ve completely BONED plat+ because people there are actually COMPETENT enough to play multiple classes to balance out the team comp.
Why the hell should I be forced to lose if the matchmaker decides to match me, as a thief, with 2 other thieves? Why shouldn’t I be able to switch?
Why SHOULDN’T I have an advantage over the people who can only play one class? coughbronzequeencough
I voted Yes because I wanted an additional ladder that lists professions only. Let’s see who is actually best in their profession.
I voted Yes because Anet flat out said they’ll make Matchmaking a lot smarter because it will actually see professions in the player pool it draws from, rather than just a number on a spread sheet. This also means a more accurate MMR per class… as each class will literally have their own rating.
Lastly, I voted Yes because I expect Anet to later fix the obvious issues you just pointed out. These “Yes” are a whole lot more than your one “No”.
Just wish we had more smart people voting here.
I voted no. I don’t care for a class based leaderboard. I also don’t in ANet’s ability to create such an algorithm that you describe in your second point. I also don’t believe ANet will fix those issues he mentioned. After all, with what we’ve been presented with so far, there’s no evidence to suggest so. In addition, should they succeed in creating this algorithm, the upper echelons of ranked simply does not have the population to support it. ANet has said a lot of things and have not delivered.
So, I did the only logical thing and voted no. The matchmaking system was as fair as it got in season 5. I didn’t see people stacking teams. I rarely saw people swapping to alts for profession achievements in the end. If they did, it was when the game was surely unwinnable for the enemy team. If I was queued into a team with 3+ of a certain profession, the vast majority of the time 2 of them swapped to another class they were proficient with. Perhaps it’s because I usually only played during primetime. But, the system, in this sense, more or less worked.
It seems to me that the people that voted for no are the realists and the yes votes are hopeful for the almost impossible. So yes, I do wish we had more smart people voting here. I do wish we had more people vote after taking into consideration the empirical evidence that has been presented to them over the years.
Fair points, one that i’m not about to disagree with. Especially when we know that implementing any type of “update” to matchmaking means waiting 6 months for results… Anyone who endured the leaderboards in 2015 knows what i’m talking about.
In fact, as for your second point, regarding class-based MMR, I really don’t see the need. Someone who can competently play multiple classes should be rightfully ranked higher than someone who can only play one class, even if the skill is comparable. If they want to learn, then they will play unranked, or they will take the MMR hit.
This last paragraph I would debate though because of the genre this game type is. You can look at any fantasy-based mmorpg game and you’ll notice that players aren’t keen on mastering every class. You’d be surprised how many players simply don’t want to learn a second toon. It’s either down right boring to do so, or they simply don’t want to go through all the hassle of learning something else. It’s not a matter of whether or not they’re “skillful”, it’s just isn’t simple. Like Overwatch, I learned every class within the first couple of weeks. In less than a month I darn nearly mastered every class.
Thank you to those who actually had a brain and voted NO.

Changing to another character kicks you from the unrank/rank game. Changing back to the original character does not place you back in the game.
Is it because there’s a possibility of changing my build on the same character? Just wanted to know if this is working as intended.
Torch#4 is now a skill shot ability

It’s still only useful for burn guardians. Other than that, nothing has really changed.
How a dude in unranked put it.. this game has been in beta for 5 years. Lets wait until it finishes or cancels mid-way in production.
Is that Kylo map ever going to be finished?
Guards got kitten on so hard lol… so pathetic.
Is that unfinished Kylo map ever going to be completed? I could make a map like that in my beginner’s Game Programming class… what kind of map creators they hiring at Anet over there?
I thought the glitch only existed for everyone other than male Humans. Humans get full 14hits but Char males don’t :p
I agree that the outcome is 100% dependant on the type of comp first, then the skill factor that comes later. It’s what the devs need to realize, if they haven’t already and it takes threads like this to bring that into our prospective.
A “Yes” vote is still better than the alternative. Initial Matchmaking Compositions absolutely needs to be fixed as well.
(edited by Saiyan.1704)
I blindly voted yes because it’s at least some kind of change. But when I saw that no has more votes I was relieved.
Profession locking is not the real problem. Real problem is profession stacking. Matchmaking should be reworked to put together teams with 5 different professions with maybe a limit to 2 per armor weight class. Or 2 same proffesions but still a limit to 2 per armor weight class. Those restrictions could work with profession locking.
There’s multiple issues here, and the dev listed a few of them on the front page. It all just boils down to this:
The real problem is not profession stacking… The issue has always been Matchmaking.
In terms of healway-Guardian, I’ve always fancied the modifiers Out Going Healing Effectiveness on Allies.
Force of Will + Sig of Transference + Rune of Monk = about a 45% heal modifier to allies. With Menders, you’ll land a 7k+ DH F2 heal on your allies. Not too bad.
this change it self doesn’t prevent class stacking. It only makes it so you hope anet will find you a good comp i think “no” is the way to go.
Or choose “Yes” and rage enough until Anet removes class stacking.
If we lock characters on queue, we can do things like use profession-specific MMR, have profession leaderboards, etc.
Numer one reason why I chose YES!
Why would players not want profession-specific leaderboards?
They didn’t even make mid clock tower look like it was burnt to the ground, or any effects that would resemble the reason it looks the way it does. It looks like an unfinished map, all because of cam issues in mid. Feels naked.
There was no camera issue… you just roll your freaking mouse wheel to change the zoom level.
I see no justification at all for this change except that it’s a hit to Mesmer and Thief.
I dislike the changes to the tower a lot. It’s way too basic, looks just visually lame. LoS was great in here before, now its bad. No incentive to risk moving around. Please return the clock tower back to what it was.
@Boon – Why did you rez this bad, old, thread? Troll?
@ Devs – Why is this thread not locked?
Sorry I couldn’t replicate it. Sword3 + JI is working just fine for me. Sure you’re not adding a Stow input some where in there?
My thoughts exactly guys. Appreciate the responses, just wanted to double confirm. No reason to upgrade my cpu as I play other games just fine.

The effectiveness of a gaming mouse with extra keys on the side for F1 to F6 abilities, utilities, etc… is 10x more effective than any “macro” type program that simulates key presses for “combos”.
Even if it was some smart program that was automatically used vs a certain skill… the effectiveness of a gaming mouse with extra keys trumps it. IF there was a legitimate good macro, either for Air Ele, Thief, or Mesmer, it’s mostly effective in 1v1 fights anyways. Not practical in Conquest.
I concur with a lot that’s been said.
Pre-HoT, I have grown to love the hammer but because of its sluggishness, you’ll do incredibly worse vs a dodging Thief and evading Rev.
Defender’s Dogma – I still feel the trait needs to stack, so that the F1 maximum charges don’t overlap each other. A 3 stack would be great, but a 2 stack would still be good and very much needed. Core Burn guardian still outperforms DH burns builds by a lot. Except for maybe 1v1 scenarios.

So I got myself the Armor MSI 1080 8gig gpu and an ASUS 2k TN monitor.
With everything on High/Ultra, except Character model Limit and Character Model Quality (lowest), i’m getting about 75 fps average, with a high of 120 in some idling cases. The fps is not sporadic by any means.
I know the game is older and the game coding is more cpu dependent, i’m just wondering if my FPS is normal for the 1080 gpu. My CPU is the i5-6600k.
If it’s a small bottle neck to GW2 only, then I wont upgrade the cpu. I just wanted to double confirm here on the forums to see if anyone else are having similar FPS on their 1080.
Thanks,
We all know how successful DTM on Courtyard was… you can’t just say “Add this!” and expect results.
Rule Mechanics
It’s whats needed… at the very least.
Not OP vs a DH player. If u see a Necro on the other team, maybe u should swap away from War/Thief.
Idk the people that left but just by looking at your team composition, you couldn’t hold a single point. They countered your necro & thief.
Blue definitely had stronger on-point advantage with aoe condi (necro) and strong focused condi bursts with the 2 wars. I bet your Rev and Necro melted.
What I meant was, Placements are utterly broken in doing what they’re suppose to do.
I was placed in Silver and made it to Plat in a month.
So you’re one out of how many? Rating systems aren’t magic and there are sometimes outliers like your example.
I’m curious where your faith in these test-run Placement matches came from because so many people got screwed over because the system “wasn’t perfect.”
A DC player meant an instant loss. Some unlucky blokes have gotten 3x DC in a row. My 60% winrate means, statistically, i’ll win 6 out of my 10 games. Well I got a DC and another 1 unlucky game where some one dc’d but came back before 2m.
Meanwhile you have those certain few who duo on alt account where one person DC’s to prevent a loss… cheating the system completely. You’re right it’s not perfect, it’s down right broken.
Placements placed me no where near where I was suppose to be (Plat Division)
But you got there. After about 100 matches, your Skill Rating more closely aligns with your Matchmaking Rating.
I think you skipped over the point of our (Exodore and I) conversation… He said Placements is a whole lot more accurate than I make it out to be. I was proving him wrong with facts.
I hit Legendary in S2 through S4
Translation: I played a lot of games. I don’t think anyone agrees that’s a smart measure of your skill.
Again, not the point but to be technical I actually hit Diamond from S2 to S4 with a 60% win rate… i’m a Diamond/Plat player. Never said I was a Legendary player I just added that in. Placements got me no where near where i’m suppose to be.
I suggest you refrain from replying if you can’t follow the conversation we were having.

It’s why the Placement matches is an utter joke and it’s why things always start to “settle” towards the end of a season.
You’re misinterpreting the purpose of placement matches and are vastly exaggerating their inaccuracy.
Placement matches basically exist to mask the large rating shifts when your rating is relatively unknown, especially if you haven’t participated at all or in a long time. If players saw rating changes of +200 or -200, they’d freak out. By the time you finish those placement matches, your rating is relatively close to where it should be and shifts will mostly be small. There are outliers, but the majority will be in the ballpark.
It’s important to remember that rating should not be thought of as an absolute number. In Glicko2 there’s actually a second number, rating deviation, which expresses the bounds where you skill actually is. Shifting up or down 50 points from day to day is perfectly reasonable and doesn’t mean the system is inaccurate.
Another thing to note is that when you compact ratings (like the soft reset), it does take a while for players to spread out again, especially at the top and bottom. If you’ve been near the top since the start of the season, you’ve probably noticed your rating go up by 50-100 points since the start. This isn’t an affect of individual games played, but requires all players to play more games.
…I understand the function of Placement matches so I don’t need a lecture. What I meant was, Placements are utterly broken in doing what they’re suppose to do.
I was placed in Silver and made it to Plat in a month. I stopped getting 30 rating per win in silver, getting 17-20 in Silver T3. Players who did better in placements received 2x more rating per win than me at the same tier. For example, I grinded to Gold Tier 2 getting 15 to17 per win. Players who got placed in Gold were getting 30 per win just because they got a win streak in placements. Placements placed me no where near where I was suppose to be (Plat Division) and this has been the case for many, though, Devs would have those statistics.
As for not participating at all or “in a long time”.. I hit Legendary in S2 through S4… so again, other than explaining the point of Placement Matches which wasn’t even a question here… there’s not a single item you said that was marginally correct.
A popular EU Thief Streamer said online the other day that Skill Rating is usually accurate after about 100 games. He also said Ranking shouldn’t apply until after about 200 games.
That much was said by a Dev himself a while back. It’s why the Placement matches is an utter joke and it’s why things always start to “settle” towards the end of a season.
I’m curious if they will either remove the placement matches entirely, or increase the number of placement games to 50 at minimum.
this skill is so kitten buggy
It is
I also experienced this kind of situations as a guardian, but mostly when I pull, I see how the enemy stops mid pull on a straight ground without any obstacles or any stability.
I think it’s because of some ping issues.
It’s a change of height issue. You pull a person at an angle, hill or stump in front of them and the directional lateral move turns into a vertical move.
The severity of the height is directly related to the distance you pull them from. Further the distance, the higher they’ll get thrown.
It’s always fun to see this bug ^^
joke fix :
1) Take scorpion wire from thief
2) Replace spear of justic with scorpion wire mechanic
3) Skill fixed
4) Wait for QQ
The arguments you guys are making are ludicrous. If he belongs in silver as you state then he shouldn’t be losing games, he should be matched with players who lose just as much as he does. But you say he should be carrying, so he’s meant to be doing the bulk of the heavy lifting and the game expects him to. And the other 4 people on his team are just dead weight, they count for nothing. Thing is, unless you experience what he is experiencing you have no valid argument here. And please stop comparing pro gamers with common players, that’s just stupid.
I’ve made it, and stayed in, Legendary with the exception of S5 being Low Plat because gw2 (disregarding the broken placement system) finally got the leaderboards right. So that’s S2 through S4 Legendary status all soloq, and Plat in S5.
A few of us here HAVE experienced what the OP has gone through. Even Helseth… except us certain players got out of it because it’s not meant to be a permanent thing.
And yes, certain classes do carry easier than others. I’ve realized backcapping classes like Thief & Mesmer can solo-carry & snowball the map a lot easier than, say, a DH or Necro. But every other class who’s worth their salt have nade it to Diamond/Plat/Legendary without deranking themselved.
(edited by Saiyan.1704)
Found a couple minor bugs in addition to the lack of reshuffling. I’ve also worked on a new version of the matchmaker that will improve roster size and profession matching. We will likely trial it during the off-season.
If I remember, I will update the wiki!
Appreciate it Evan.
As for everyone else asking their questions about the Dev’s Seasonal patch releases in pvp and the inability to “getting it right”… where’s your suggestions & coding? Do you not realize the type game GW2 is?
I’m pretty sure the majority here have either brought zilch to the table, or their ideas were just so biasly atrocious that it would have broke the system. I’ve seen 7 different matchmaking altercations implemented for Pvp; from the UI, class balances and MMR, to the very structure of the leaderboards.
Some were better than others but S5 is without a doubt the BEST season we’ve had yet. Needed it in S1, we also needed to know what worked and what didn’t.
(edited by Saiyan.1704)
Revenants were mechanically broken from the start… like, who creates high damage + high evade + high modility, on a single button press… on a relatively short cd? The class’s mechanics was, and still are, ridiculous.
It comes down to this. The window of opportunity to counter such Rev abilities is very slim for most classes. To top it off, their Ability Management is so high that there’s an apparent skill gap between Bronze & Legendary players… it’s why they receive nerf bats.. it’s why Revs are hard to balance.
HEY WHO HERE LOVES TRAINS???????
I’M DYING.
This is how the 16-0 20-1 etc accounts are on the leader board. Said person, an ESL teammate of his, and an engineer queue. The solo will throw the match if he gets on the other team. Happens very often. They can’t beat good players legitimately, so they cheat the system by manipulating matches.
RIP
Here’s a fix.
The due team with a DC player will receive a loss rather than just that 1 player.
The severity of the point loss could be, maybe, cut in half for the sake of forum QQ reduction
Appreciate the replies.
So Plat players… How many points you getting per win and loss?
Plat tier 1: +7 per win, -12 per loss… got a -18 last couple games because matchmaking is ridiculous.
Currently still 57% win rate. I’m curious if anyone else have a similiar win rate and same rating gain… had the same think happen to me in Gold until I stopped during the holidays and picked it back up to reach Plat
Going to be inactive for a week to reset my rating volatility.

DH, gold 2 to silver 2 depending how much MM hates me so far.
What 1v2’s can I win and how?
More specifically…
Burn DH can darn near successfully 1v2 any combination of:
Rangers, Engi, (maybe not in plat tier)
Necros
Some Wars
Counters = Combination of DH/Ele/War
(Power DH will shut you down unless they’re rezing some one in your aoe symbols.)We dont’ do particularly well 1v1 unless they’re maybe a ranger but in groups where aoe symbols hit multi targets, well, that will always do insane damages. This is particularly seen vs Rangers.
Ew, meditrapper not burn DH.
To answer your question, you never will. Unless they’re bad. I stopped winning 1v2’s in Gold.
how did you reach plat with 60% … I also started low silver and after over 100 matches with tat 60% i barely moved up …. With 200 i am still there but winrate is now a bit lower because i gave up on duo Q.
It’s funny, i’ve hit 60% in S2, S3, & S4 Diamond only up till the last couple of tiers. Though I’ve hit Legendary in prev leagues, even when DH hit rock bottom in S2, I can confidently say i’m probably a Diamond soloQ player so not hitting Legendary this season isn’t a huge deal.

wvw is blobing for the most part. it’s dumb that teams can’t queue together.
especially if anet is trying to make its pvp look like an esport. Also very true…
Could you imagine ranked arena in wow being unable to queue with your friends/3s team?
Could you imagine Overwatch/CSGO in ranked and only being about to play with ONE friend and the rest are pugs?
Can you imagine pushing higher tiers in LoL, Dota or HOTS and being forced to play solo or with 1 person?
It’s absolutely absurd.
Those comparisons are kinda bad. We don’t have 3v3 in GW2 and a single player can’t carry like in a MOBA or CSGO.
I wanted the old [SoloQ/Duo pvp] [team pvp] system back but I agree with everyone else in that 5man players were tired of waiting 15m+ for matches. Could really use in-game tournaments though… or any tournament in general (do we still have tournaments?)
Low tier Silver after placements. Reached Plat with a 60% win rate, currently at 57% win rate as I’m not really going any higher than tier 1 Plat. 114W, 85L
Gold tier entry, +25 rating per win
Gold tier 2, +15 rating per win
Gold tier 3 & Plat entry, +7 to +8 rating per win
I’m gaining on average 8 points per win, losing -15+ per loss. Matchmaking gives +/- 2 points depending on how it thinks I should do.
I have friends in Legend or Upper Plat who have worse win percentages than me (50% or less) yet their placements matches carried them past silver/gold/plat so they’re hovering around 1800 to 1900 rating…
To say the least, i’m a bit bitter with placements. The rating system (mmr) could be a bit less volatile. I should be gaining a lot more than +7 when grinding through gold & plat with the win rate i’m on.
I have good news and bad news.
This example is an extreme case so it is not screwing over everybody. There were multiple people that failed to ready up, which meant multiple rounds of substitutes were needed.
Bad news. Teams are not rebalanced after finding substitutes and it has been that way for years. There are complicated computer-science reasons why, but it is solvable and I will attempt to fix it. In this case since it happened multiple times, it compounded the inaccuracies.
That.. makes a lot of sense on so many levels. Though everyone may not have experienced the fault you explained, fixinf it makes things that much better.
I’ve found that not playing for a week will reset your win/lose gain. Used to only win 3 points in Gold… didn’t play for 2 weeks and I’m back to 15 points per win and made it to plat. I imagine this wont work as well in the top 50.
Ok so here’s the part that has yet to be defined by Helseth.
“Optimized thief”
Define optimized before I weigh in please b/c if it’s what I think you mean than this will be easy.
Right now we have 1/2 of the pro thief players weighing in vs a pro mesmer. Sind is biased towards thief b/c he plays thief and helseth is biased against thief b/c he’s always hated them since like 2013.
Please define “optimized thief”
Good question,!
The image I had in my mind when writing optimized thief is basically the highest level of gameplay I know of for the class. There is a huge difference between someone being ’’ok’’ at something and someone being ’’opimized’’
For intance, people use me as a benchmark for how mesmer does in duels. Most mesmers playing vs most DHs have no chance right? However, when I play it, the ’’optimized’’, I beat 99% of the DHS out there.
Does this mean that mesmer beats DH? No, because once I face an optimized DH (drazeh) I get completelly destroyed. Like the matchup is impossible.
So I guess my definition is ‘’the best player in this matchup vs the best player in this matchup’‘. This opinion is still subject to change since new craft is found all the time, but it’s the best we got when crafting.
Drazeh (most definitely the best dueling thief in the game) melts any ele 1v1. We can use this to say that an ’’optimized’’ thief beats ele.
I agree, though, I wouldn’t say that a team without another thief = a team that can’t counter an “optimized” thief when node roaming for 1v1. Unless you meant a +1 by a thief.
This thread, thieves are only as OP as a ToF from DH… only hurts if you let it.
It’s called variance, theres also a chance that the legendary duo is in your team so matchmaking is fine.
There should not be a chance at all… that’s the point of this thread.
There needs to be a second sorting after players are picked for a game.
I think it is more an issue of quality vs. quantity. If you are winning your matches vs. top 10 players then you should be able to keep your position playing a few matches. However if it is coming against people that aren’t even in the top 100 then no. Alternatively, make a tournament at the end of the season where the top 500 are put in a solo queue and have a new 10 match placement.
That’s just the issue.. matchmaking doesn’t know what the heck top players are. It’s just numbers on a spread sheet, thinking it has even team comps. Because, u know, double thief or 4x DH on a team is considered “balanced”.
Quantity is what’s needed in terms of governing a person’s true rating. Players who got 12 wins in a row in placements are dropping their rating in the leaderboard simply because they’re playing more games… lucky matchmaking will only gets you so far.
If this were placement matches…
…I would have logged out, gone out side, and punched a baby.
