Naked Players trolling ranked

Saiyan.1704

Something needs to be done about this issue, because its not only gimping the player who is naked, but its gimping the team.

Just give everyone flat armor in PvP based on their class already. It shouldn’t matter if they are wearing any armor or not.

I really don’t understand why only a few slots count in the first place. Either we need to wear armor in PvP or we don’t Anet, but make up your mind.

This so much.
I actually know why it only counts a few pieces of armor. I think it is to do with when you move a level 2 character straight into HotM. You can’t buy two of the six armor pieces, therefore, they don’t count for armor.

Its still entirely stupid and incompetent on Arenanet’s part though.

It’s just an overlooked item that’s been there since launch. Like not having a choice to visually disable our Aegis buff shield. I wouldn’t call it incompetent. Just annoying af.

Now, the removal soloQ would be your definitive ideal there.

My PvP feedback as a new player

Saiyan.1704

The community, at the beginning when I started now I have 400 hours (ONLY in PvP) but I still consider myself new until I hit the 2K hours in PvP I tho players with awesome weapons were veteran players that were good

Those “awesome weapons” come from PvE. Most of the glowly skins are from PvE, and even for the PvP legendary back item you’ll end up doing PvE since you can’t make money from PvP at a reasonable enough rate to buy the ingredients (other than clovers which you can get from reward tracks) for a Gift of Fortune.

Though it wasn’t exactly a thing I was adamant about, but it took me 3 seasons to make enough gold for the back piece lol.

OP, either you’re good or you’re not. So if you want to join a PvP guild then do it because they’ll accept you if you’re good. Worse case scenario they’ll talk about your build and make you run something more meta.

As for skins and eye candy, I’ve never even heard of a person throwing that out like it’s some type of means of skill measurement. It just doesn’t happen unless you’re playing with kids.

One last thing, don’t pay attention to end-of-game stats. There is no efficient way for Anet to measure individual performances. Not even in the slightest. You can brag about your top DPs but that’s all it is.

Can't change class mid-match

I agree, there should be no class switching after you queue up.
I think you should be able to adjust your build as you wait for the match to begin but not swap.

There was a poll on this already and this position lost.

I saw the poll on getting rid of the 5 man premades but not this one, hopefully they put it back up sometime.

The poll lost by, what, 15% or so? I feel people were not educated enough on that Yes side argument. There were so many questions and quite a few people wished they votes Yes.

EU has more players, NA has more tourneys… RIP :/

More players, but less willingness to get a team together it seems atm for a 5v5. We can do ESL 5v5, but signups will likely be low. Also we still have two EU running 2v2 and 1v1 tourneys so technically there are more eu

Problem is actually having to make an account on ESL for all players, fill in information -> signup and need to have guaranteed 8 teams to get rewards. Battlefy for players/teams are 10 times easier and therefor a bigger chance to get teams

Agree 110%. ESL was so problematic, seems I was always trying to get that 1 person to register, only to have the rest of the team lose interest all together. #rip

Battlefy is so much easier. In-game tournaments would be easiest.

Saiyan.1704

The game has seen worse balances, I dare say s1 tops it, followed by the release of HoT, and before that the Cele meta when Anet had no idea what to do with it. You may have a slightly different prospective because Rev really isn’t in the best of spots at the moment and War is shining bright, hardly anyone can 1v1 them on point.

When a meta shift happens, so do the top teams of NA and EU. They always adapt to the new meta hype by swapping professions because they multiclass. So I like to think “top players” quit the game due to the lack of competition; the drive that keeps them playing. I mean, what happen to all the ESL tournaments and pug weeklies?

This is probably one of the most boring season to date yet it’s arguably the best in terms of where the PvP League is at.

Elite spec - What would you like it to be?

The leak is from someone who accurately leaked quite a few other things in the same post he made leaking the next elite specs.

Personally I want the purifier to be ranged support, but I’m almost certain it’s going to be offensive condition cancer. I actually asked the leaker about it, and he said something along the lines of “It’s pure offense so far”.

That may be speculation or even a rough diagram, but nothing is ever pure “offensive” for guardian. That’s seen from every weapon set we have.

If Greatsword doesn’t work… why the heck are we going to use AXE over Sword/Scepter? We better gain 1 heck of a mobility range-reducer for #2 and #5… like, two mini virtue F2 skills without the healing factor…. just saying…

Why Population Is.. And Is Not... The issue.

in PvP

Saiyan.1704

If you assume people play whatever class on whatever build gives them the best chance to win, this whole argument falls apart. Not that many of your matches are being ruined by people playing classes they aren’t experienced with. Getting rid of dailies, and the unique profession requirements for the legendary back piece would do a better job of solving this problem than your suggestions.

This is just a couple of several more items that needs addressing. By all means, list which ever you think has higher priority. The bottom line is that matchmaking needs to be smarter.

The larger the player pool, the better matchmaking will be. This is common sense. You can test this by queueing at different times. Everyone knows matchmaking is better during peak hours.

Not something i’m disagreeing with. My OP is a bit more detailed when pointing out what the “issues” are.

Having specific builds have specific mmr is very exploitable, nuts, and would destroy queue times. Amulet and profession….I could get on board with this, but it’s not going to solve your matchmaking crisis, and it’d still be exploitable. A power warrior or necro could switch between zerker(paladins for necro), marauder, and destroyer and bend their mmr whichever way they wanted it to go.

You’re absolutely right but there’s a smart way to do things. This concept idea would be easier if we had profession based mmr. So lets just assume Class MMR Matchmaking was a thing.

You queue with a class running Amulet/Rune with X/X/X treeline. Queue pops and MM picks you based on class and build. The moment queue pops, you cannot alter your build in any way. Game starts without the ability to alter anything build related.

I think that removes any exploitation but correct me if i’m wrong here.

@Cynz

If matchmaking did its job your point analogy shouldn’t even be a question asked . A fair match should be a fair match, across the board.

If you have 1 player of every tier on 1 team, I expect the exact same ratio on the other team as well. And if that’s the case, as a Plat or Legend player, why should I receive full -20+ point loss for a game who’s player’s divisions were diverse?

But here is why queue times means nothing on Anet’s matchmaking system. I have seen Anet implement 2 second queue times for extremely fast games, for everyone. I’ve also seen them deliberately implement a 5 minute wait time, in an attempt to make the overall match quality “healthy”. The quality of matches were either terrible (worse than what we have now) or the match quality received wasn’t worth the wait time for it.

A 5 minute, 10 minute, or 15 minute queue times isn’t going to do anything but make the pvp population frustrated. You may be fine with it but i’ll guarantee you that you’ll be the only one queueing in the long run. (i’m not ok with queue times longer than 3m, 5m is pushing it).

Suggestion: Increasing Carry Ability

in PvP

Posted by: Saiyan.1704

Saiyan.1704

Just had a random thought. It would be kind of cool if a player received individual buffs for performing things that “carry” a team. Maybe this can kind of be profession-based…

-Snip-

There is no algorithm that measures in-game individual player skill. There’s nothing that’s remotely close to it.

  • Kills off point does nothing for his team, in a game mode based on Node rotations and focus targeting bursts.
  • Just standing on a node at Home or Far does nothing when the enemy team of 5 is zerging between the other two nodes.
  • Measuring kills does nothing if you’re a Necro who’s better off cleaving the downs.
  • It goes on and on…

If there were a set algorithm that actually measures individual skill, it would be implemented already. The only thing we have that comes darn near close, is a League worth of PvP games. And that’s because a players “true” mmr shows after, literally, playing 50+ games minimum for a season. Yet 250 games is a more realistic number for a darn near accurate individual player skill. It’s why Anet is continually looking at matchmaking, to an extent. (it needs to be better just saying guys )

I don’t think there would have to be any complex algorithm for such a thing. For example, if you are contesting a node in a 1v1 and happen to win that 1v1, then you can get such a buff.

Another example would be contesting a node in a 2v1 and staying alive for a set amount of time— say, 2 minutes.

Of course these are very specific situations but I think Anet could come up with a few more.

That’s something I can agree on but that in itself is still a bit technical with problematic outliers. Each player in said 1v1 comp would need to have their cds on full for it to be a Fair measurement of ‘duelist’ skill.

That means that the person can’t get hit between a rotation of notes, or a single cc prior to arriving, or even a Trait being on CD the moment he enters the 1v1 battle. Just adding all the trait cds alone is a lot of coding for something that’ll maybe make a difference in the long run (say, an entire pvp season rather than some large mmr buff from 1 game).

right now it IS a gamble, mostly because the game is dead.

dead game means no population -> trash matchmaking.

I assume Matchmaking still attempts to make fair mmr averages teams. So how is it then that certain games are lopsided?

If there’s such a deviation of Plat/Silver/Bronze on one team, shouldn’t the Win/Lose point ratio not be so great? In other words, why in the heck should I be “tested” against players who are not even in my same division, yet lose -21 points (I only gain 9) when there’s only 1 other player in my division on the opposite team? That’s just not fair at all…

I’ve been saying this since late 2014 when they were issuing test seasons… Matchmaking needs to be a smarter system.

Population is an issue.

I’ve waited 10 minutes in a queue on a seemingly busy Saturday day, only for my full solo team of gold ~1500 players face against a duo que of Top 20 players with other plats.

There is clearly a problem here.

You didn’t read my post then.

I’ve stated why players complain on population, when these complaints should instead be directed to Matchmaking’s (lack-there-of) algorithms. My explanation is in the original post above..

You realize the overall algorithm is nearly identical.

It absolutely is not.

I’m not going to explain as to why because I just need to point out to the #1 (some what major) flaw Class Specific Builds.

The above is one of the major flaws of what Matchmaking does not calculate… Overwatch’s MMR is better because of how less their error corrections needs to be.

There’s no denying that there’s less players in PvP but the fallacy here is that most believe Matchmaking is worse because of it. Now, here’s the ever-so contradicting answer. You’re right. The fallacy is that Matchmaking was Always the culprit. It was a fire cracker turned hand grenade. I will explain by first breaking down what Matchmaking is, bit by bit.

Matchmaking is the system that hands picked players in the GW2 queue pool based on their mmr rating. In the heart of what governs a player’s mmr is the Glicko algorithm. Then you have sub-systems that govers that algorithm based on the type of “quality” Matchmaking has deemed the match to be.

For example, if a player has waited 5 minutes for a game, then Matchmaking will give him higher priority, sort of speak, and give him a near-fair game. You gain or lose mmr based on how high, or low, that quality of match is.

So the next question is, "Why is the quality of matches lower than the previous seasons, if Matchmaking is technically the same? It has to be because of the lower population.

Well… it’s actually because of Matchmaking

  • Matchmaking is a broad spectrum of algorithms like the ones I briefly listed above but it gets a lot more complicated. There are other sub-algorithms that “checks” its own algorithm, to limit the number of errors in-said algorithm. The PvP community knows about these algorithms, actually. It’s “duo teams”, “League Division Categories”, even the “Placement Matches”. It’s all part of the system to better the quality of Matchmaking.

It’s missing two big factors though,

  • Class Specific Builds
  • Class Specific MMR

The lack of Class Specific Builds means that Matchmaking does not include the 81 possible trait combinations a single class can have. Each and every one of these build combinations (not including weapons, sigil & amulet combos) will have their own in-game performance. So changing a build on one professsion is basically an entirely new class on that same profession, according to Matchmaking.

Now.. lets turn our heads to the ever-so-easy-to-blame, PvP Population.

We all know Matchmaking tries to find the fastest, highest quality, of a match for a single player. Matchmaking looks into our player pool for a quality match, but the player pool has lessened. So it has a broader spectrum to search, but we all know these ‘broader spectrum’ are really made up of Divisions Tiers. Player’s in these Divisions are in there based on their performance.

So, how is Matchmaking going to go out of its way, 2 or three Division Tiers over, to choose a single player, that Matchmaking initially picked based on Player mmr, but said player can swap to another class entirely, who may or may not be his main profession to begin with, in that profession’s 1 out of the 81 (or more) build combinations, going to suddenly make a “Good Quality” match?

Riddle me that.

We can still have better matchmaking, we can still have Profession MMR if Anet wants to give it to us.

Hardly paraphrasing. Anet darn near said that profession based mmr is possible, as well as an array of other matchmaking options will be made available if we had profession locked queueing.

Only reason people voted “No” is because they wanted a choice to swap classes. Yet only 1 person swaps to that secondary class once every 3 games.

Absolutely nothing stopping them from giving us profession mmr (whichever class they are on when the game begins) or fixing the matchmaking.

Are you saying Anet should have just implemented professiom based queueimg wothout player consent? If so then I agree 100%. Have class swapping in unrank.

If you’re saying that MM should just start labeling player’s professions with mmr rating regardless, only to have that class swap to a completely different class beginning of the map, will defeat the entire purpose of profession based mmr. Matchmaking would be worse and players would deliberately queue with low mmr professions.

Some of these matchups really are bad but it’s been like that since s1. The only way to make matchmaking a bit more “accurate” is if each character/profession had its own individual mmr. Even then, it’s a challenge for matchmaking to differentiate how a player performs in a given comp. Matchmaking reads numbers on a spread sheet but it doesn’t take things like Build & Team Compositions into consideration.

Why do top PvPers fight in map chat?

Saiyan.1704

I was just wondering. Did people give up on season? I saw some of the top 20 PvP players stop playing in Ranked match to yell at each other. They were so angry, that they no care about game. A lot was said about teammate using meta build to win, and he can’t win unless 2 v 1 or something. While they fight in map chat, rest of us take all points since no one playing.

If they are angry, why not settle in match? Is this normal for top PvP players?

Also, why are tier 2 Gold players on same team as top 20 players?

To answer your last question, matchmaking tries to balance Gold/Plat/Legendary players together so the “top tier” players don’t have to wait eons for a match.

As for the complaints… I suppose “top players” have more beef with each other and think they’re in-the-right when it comes to certain things. They have their own egocentric atmosphere.

It’s a sad thing to watch them bicker at each other… or seeing one of them go afk for something ridiculously silly. It’s really only 1 or 2 bad apple on the field but there’s something about a level of respect lost to these so called “top tier” players in GW2 PvP now adays.

I agree with you though, these certain players need to either play the game, or go duel it out some where but I suspect they’re too proud to even do that.

There is a lesser population but lets face it, newer games are coming out. A Good MMORPG PvP game is what We Here Seek. It’s why we keep playing.

I have played against darn near every top 20 player in the game and that tells me the population is low… I’m an above average player but I don’t feel i’m top 20, maybe top 50 or 75.

The game is the same when hot first came out. Only difference is Leagues and its quality. Leagues has gotten better but the game hasn’t changed. The implementation of HoT caused a lot of power creep that players didn’t like – players had reduced build diversity, Anet didn’t address this issue.

TL;DR
A lot of what Anet implemented in HoT, lack of build diversity in general, wasn’t addressed. Change is fine, but it removed a lot of functions and it was Never addressed. GW2 to me is still the best MMORPG “Competitive” game but i’m jumping ship once Star Citizen releases.

Strong hold would be fine.. if they updated the map.

You don’t just bring out a map like that without updates. It needs monthly revisions but Anet doesn’t have the resources to keep up with it… so they left it as is.

There’s a plethora of revisions they could have, should have, made to it. They simply haven’t touched it since its launch.

Power corrupt necro with d/f or gs in place of staff, burn guard (kite resistance), condi mes w/moa, rev with zerk (kite), and stompy valk thief.

The only “meta build” that can do it efficiently is just the mesmer, but it’s highly dependent on a successful moa. The rest are slight-variants-of or lower rated meta builds.

I suppose it depends on the burn guardian, but I have more success on power DH than Burn melt-ur-face-off builds. Plat T1

[Proposal] Victory Point Based MMR

How about we fix matchmakimg first… have the system make even-sided matches then we can look upon the Elo, glicko calculator… if it even needs improving.

If it was profession based queueing, mmr calculator would have been more accurate. Just saying.

I thought this was PVP not PvE, why is there so many 5% more damage sigils?

Does anyone actually use Sigil of Force in PvP?

No one does. Their reasoning is, people used it way back when, when there were no other viable options.

condi guard is useful for 1 situation and 1 situation only:

cleaving vs a downed body or vs cleaving enemies grouped around a downed teammate.

And since a lot of games are practically decided in the first opening skirmish at middle, the amount of burn cleave a guardian puts out can decide a match-up against some opponents. And burn DH does have 2 cover conditions: vulnerability and cripple.

Not including Bleed Sigil every 2 seconds and Poison/Torment/Vulnerability every 2s/5s/10s respectively.

Burn Guard can melt Rangers, Necros, & Revs.
Mes/Engi are the neutral w/e classes
War/DH/Ele combo are potentially the counter classes on point

Thieves are a hit or miss. Thieves like Anonymous will counter you (or anyone..) while other bad thieves can simply be ignored as they’ll die from aoe.

“How was it not enjoyable or competitive? If you never looked a their rating or saw that they were low ranked, would it suddenly be more competitive/enjoyable?

Here’s why, it is NOT enjoyable for mid gold players (and below), to be queued up against literally the top players in the region (who are exclusively duo queued); it’s ALSO not enjoyable for top rated players to be matched WITH and AGAINST those average players. For those same reasons, it is also not competitive.

Can you answer the bolded question please? I’ll answer yours.

And as an aside, if all you care about is winning, then why don’t you just play hotjoin.

I don’t because it’s not competitive nor rewarding.

Saiyan, all points noted. Though I do want to say that I do not think the 90% are elitists. It’s just an elitist thing to say. Yes, I made a generalization, but so does the 90% in saying that DC players all deserve punishment, regardless of either intent or circumstances. Also, it is unfortunate for me to admit, but I cannot get back within 30 secs. The quickest I can return is 1 min or even 45 secs. The window of time is a bit to small for me. And I can see now that PVP is a much different community (almost entirely exclusive) from PVE. It’s likely I won’t last long, much to the delight of the PVP players on this thread. But, I’ll just do what I can for as long as I can.

You all could probably tell that I haven’t been in PVP very long, so experiencing the penalty, that treatment from team members, and now this discussion in the forum has been very… eye-opening to say the least. I do not want to stop PVP just because something like this happened, even though the comments here were quite discouraging. I will take this thread’s suggestions and try hotjoins.

May I also suggest upgrading your hardware. Get a Solid State Drive. This single product, assuming your motherboard can use it, is like night and day.

Once you plug a new SSD, reconfigure bios and reinstall window on the new drive, you can start any game within a couple seconds after a computer boot. It’s that fast. It also helps in screen loads within the game.

Any other program will be just as quick so it’s well worth the investment. SSD ranges between $50 to $150+ depending on brand and size.

While what you say isn’t incorrect, there are nuances to take into consideration. “Balanced” is a term I wouldn’t use in this scenario, because the ends do not justify the means. Just because the point total ended closely, does not mean that the match was enjoyable or competitive.

How was it not enjoyable or competitive? If you never looked a their rating or saw that they were low ranked, would it suddenly be more competitive/enjoyable?

Your main concern is rating disparity… when Anet themselves said the only difference between #1 player and the 100th player is an extremely small mmr deviation (not individual player rating) so it makes sense as to why. Because it’s true.

Anet is not going to have these top 20 players wait 15 minutes for a game. Matchmaking HAD to give them the best possible match at the time of the wait… who are you to neglect these players?

EDIT

OK, lets break this down…..

I can see that many of you haven’t been on the side of receiving a penalty for something you deem as unfair; this applies to anything, not just GW2.

We all have… darn nearly every single one of us.

I wrote the original post because I thought the penalty was unfair, not just for me but also for my teammates. If most of you read the entire thread, you would know that I’m not blaming ANet for anything and neither am I lamenting the fact that I don’t have the greatest internet connection. I want to inform ANet that there are other people who feel that the penalty is unfair. For example, if a player DCs for more than two minutes, say, every other match, then the penalty would make sense and is much deserved. However, if a player DCs for less than that and tries to return to the match, then receives the penalty once logging back on, then the penalty is unreasonable, in my very honest opinion.

If you come back before 30s, you don’t receive a penalty. What more are you asking?? Anything longer than 30s (almost equivalent to dying twice back to back) is 100% detrimental to your team.

I suggested replacing the DC player with a player in queue so that the team is not 4v5 for very long, for those of you who “complain” about being in a 4v5 match. Adding new players to a match happens in Snowball Mayhem, which is a much watered down version of PVP anyway.

I’ll humor myself for a moment… So lets say Anet adds a function like,

“Accept DC queue for Extra rewards; You will never lose rating”

You’re still be waiting for Some One to accept that invitation. This Some One has to be a random “first come, first serve” player because matchmaking can’t afford the time to be picky. In other words, the time it takes for some one to DC (30s) and for MM to pick a player, is too great. This function isn’t something that Anet is going to invest in.

Like I said, I am NOT the only one. Will you tell all of the players who DC to suck it up, get new computers, and switch ISPs? We all play in different conditions and enjoy PVP differently, but we are all treated the same by teammates after unfortunate things happen during a match. To say that every single one of those DC players deserved what they received is an elitist thing to say, really.

By The Beard of Zeus.. how is something that 90% of competitive players in every competitive game believes in… are suddenly “elitists”? These players are casual. The Elitists you’re refering to are the 1%.

Now, most of you assume that I disconnect “all the time”, as choovanski mentioned above. I disconnect occasionally, but not always during PVP matches. Most of my matches are fine, it was only the last match that put me on timeout. At the time, I thought it was outrageous! I knew nothing about the penalty and to be hit with it (and now with all of these comments) shocked me. As I read about the dishonor timeout on forum threads and wiki, I understood why I was getting penalized, but NOT why my team got penalized as well.

Again, your team will not get penalized if you DC for longer than 30s.

Like I said earlier, thank you for commenting on this post. I apologize if some things I wrote on this thread offended or upset some or all of you. I did not intend for this thread to provoke such a response from anyone.

We’re not so much offended (this is the internet and we’re all gamers), just only baffled by the idea that a person who, say, DC’s 1 once a week for 31s or longer thinks that they’re not 1) hurting the team any and/or 2) wants redemption.

You’re talking to a community that wants absolutely 0 disadvantages when they queue competitively. I’m not just speaking about GW2. This is how every competitive community, in my 15yrs of casual pvp gaming, feels. The 30x more popular game Overwatch has a more stricter system.

burn is bad and useless above (and probably in) gold tier. drives me insane when my teammates are burn and I bm’d falselights the other day for throwing a game playing it. though I think we still won that one.

I’m curious what is it about burn that makes it so unviable in your eyes. What area(s) do you find it to be so lacking in? Also are you just running the completely standard meta build with LB – Sw/F this season or have you made any adjustments to traits/abilities?

Wanna know why burn guard isn’t that good? It’s a one trick pony. Every class has atleast little condiclear and guardians don’t inflict much other conditions(that would cover for the damaging conditions to not be cleared) so the burning is pretty easy to clear. That’s why it only works in lower tiers of play and not upwards from gold. Every other condispec currently that is viable in higher tiers has loads of different condis that they can inflict pretty much on demand. So tldr; burnbuild is too easy to counter with condition clears.

Pretty much this ^
Condi builds are generally considered a joke in the upper tiers. That said I went from Gold T2 to Plat with the condi build i’m using. I’m trying to see how high it’ll take me.

I would like to see virtue of justice passive hit all staff aa targets when it activates. Also to let it have burning upkeep 100% if proper condi duration is build.

A ridiculously overpowered suggestion lol.

Assuming each target are within 240 radius of each other…
In a mob if three, 1 AA would mean each target would receive 3 stacks of burn because you’ve just made F1 passive active, act independently for each target hit.

So in a mob of five, each target would receive 5 stacks of burns on just 1 auto attack hit. On just the second successful auto attack swing, each would have 15 stacks of burns…

Are you deliberately trying to break the game? XD
