Official Feedback Thread: WvW Reward Tracks

in WvW

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

Participation generation is great. Especially so considering dead map activities like escorting yaks can still be used to maintain your participation, while not providing too much on their own. I think this system is very good as it stands.

I think the rate at which you get reward track credit is too low, particularly in regards to prior comments saying that “the rates should be similar to spvp”. They’re not; 550 in 15 minutes is too low, considering you could complete multiple games in that time, and just having two losses will give you more than WvW’s max progress. I would tentatively suggest 800 as a reasonable participation cap; this puts the reward track rate at roughly 1.5 rewards every tick. It also means it will take longer to get your participation up to that cap, and increasing that initial surge of activity will probably be good.

The 10 minute participation tickdown timer is very comfortable and allows you to take breaks, especially considering the ‘real’ participation timer is something in the field of half an hour (going from 550 to 0).

The range of reward tracks is fine, but not amazing. I am very happy that a new set of armor was added for this system though.

A feature I would like would be a ‘cash out’ system to immediately convert your Participation into Reward Track Points so that when you finish in WvW you can turn Participation into something useful. It doesn’t need to be a high rate and it shouldn’t be a rate which actively incentivizes you to spend your Participation in the middle of a play session.

But why should I have to learn a whole different game mode, and all new maps, for a daily?

But you don’t have to do it. It’s a bit of gold, a few spirit shards, and a few AP, not a mandate from the president. I’m pretty regularly missing dailies myself just because I couldn’t be bothered filling them.

I think that there’s a difference between “I don’t usually do <world boss|jumping puzzle|mini-dungeon>, but the game wants me to go out of my way to do it” and my case, which is “I do not have reasonable access to this adventure”.

Is there a bug with the dailies causing them when you don’t have HoT?

Try PvPing or WvWing.

Almost every day there’ll be either WvW Veteran Creature Slayer, WvW Land Claimer or WvW Big Spender.

Vet Creature, find the 3 beast spots and kill them. They’re just veterans, easy to kill.
Land Claimer, find a Sentry and capture it. It’s easy to kill.
Big Spender, if you have a guild hall with a T1 WvW hut, you can spend badges to get a Badge of Tribute and then TP it.

Also save PvP reward flasks for days when PvP Reward Earner is the daily, and use the flasks to fill it.

Dailies are supposed to get you out of your comfort zone to at least a small extent. Go do things you wouldn’t normally do.

Players doing it in any mode will still have to “work” for it by gearing up and playing. It’s not a case of walking into the raid and being handed your armor.

But they won’t. If there’s a mode tuned lower than the current raids, they won’t need to gear up as much as they do to tackle the current ‘hard’ mode. If the fights take less time to learn, they will spend less time playing.

Mind you, in some ways it’s a weird choice by ANet: they spend oodles of time designing & implementing skins with unique effects and then they limit acquisition to just one limited game mode. But it’s their game and their choice.

If they were bland, easy to design skins with no effects, then they wouldn’t encourage anyone to do anything.

Also keep in mind that if such a mode does come to pass, it won’t drop sooner than the Summer seasonal patch in ~3 months. Lastly, don’t forget that they said that the focus of the next seasonal patch would be new content, not revamped systems, so I’m not sure when an easy mode patch would surface.

I would personally expect them to be not touching the current raid with an easy mode and instead possibly targeting the next raid’s wings.

Provisioner sells level 70 consumables

in WvW

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

Maybe the crafting in this game should finally get tossed out or revamped. Due to other systems, a lot of the crafts aren’t worth crap apart from a few items (some foods and Ascended time gated mats) and only serve as gold sinks with mostly account bound carrots dangling at the end. I can’t think of any leveled crafting system in any MMO that I’ve played that’s as unrewarding and closed off. Let PvErs and their bountiful resource nodes craft food and let other PvErs spend their gold buying from them. Put level 80 account bound foods on a WvWvW vendor.

What’s your complaint here, that crafting is a poor system or that crafting provides items for both PvEers or WvWers?

Having that crossed system is good for the game. It adds broader value to both rewards from PvE and WvW.

The new WvW Provisioner sells consumables for badges. I thought this is brilliant; no more feeding them PvE farmers by buying stuff at Trading Post. Unfortunately the consumables at WvW Provisioner are only level 70.

Why not level 80 that WvW players would actually use?

You’ve hit the nail on the head with your first point. They still want you to be the market for the food items that PvE players are producing. These aren’t supposed to completely shove them out of the market, it’s just intended to be something you can grab in a pinch.

Agent's pack on another character

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

You won’t be able to move the Agent’s Pack itself between characters as it is Soulbound on Acquire, at least according to the wiki.

If you want to use the skin on another character, use a transmute charge to apply it.
If you want to use the stats on another character, you’ll need to build extra backpacks- you won’t be able to build another Agent’s Backpack.

Alternatively, you could push to complete the Lightbringer’s Backpack, which can be freely moved between characters- And if you prefer the Agent’s skin, you can transmute that onto it.

I think losing division would be kinda sketchy.

I think making Sapphire or maybe even Emerald tier-loss divisions, and maybe making Amber a pip-loss division, would help a lot to keep the “I will definitely get into Ruby no matter what” down. There are only two ‘real’ divisions in the game as it stands; Amber is no-loss, Sapphire and Emerald are grind-thru, Legend basically means you’ve already won.

But I dunno.

Explain in Excruciating detail.. how.

Casual players lose interest during content droughts. Hardcore players are, by definition, not casual. That’s all there is to it.

New players, infatuated with the game. Most “vets” already recommended the game to everyone they think would enjoy it, long before they became vets.

Mostly new players. Old players invited their friends long ago, and those friends either are already playing, no longer playing or never were going to play.

Well, I’m still recommending the game to friends all the time. Maybe I’m just more hardcore than you guys? :^)

Sarrs.4831

Actually, casual content is sustainable, due to inherent turn over, you replace casual people, with more casual people. There is no point they need to get to, so they there is no process of turn over to maintain.

Not really a sustainable strategy in the mid to long term if the game ever suffers from content droughts. Casual content gets eaten fast. Casuals eat that content quickly, nothing to do, get bored, leave. The game lives and dies on maintaining player interest and if that fades, that’s a problem.

The system can theoretically work under a sustainable Living World system in which content is rapidly added to the game and we can see similar returns in SWTOR having much higher subscription rates while it’s running its monthly KOTFE content but it’s a system that’s incredibly vulnerable to internal development issues. Like, y’know, the massive pipeline issues that GW2’s had for the last 17 months.

Hardcore content and hardcore players do a lot to help the game during these drought periods.

Guess who wins that Face Off? That’s right, the New Players, because like it or not, vets are not Sustainable, they have a turn over, and no replacement.

Who do you think recommends the game to their friends?

I do think that there’s a problem with the seasons; personally my energy runs out about halfway through. It’s entirely likely it’s just me though.

I think maybe look at Hearthstone or Path of Exile seasons to think about what sort of duration it should be. I think longer seasons could work if there were more of a transition from an active, frantic meta into a settled one, if balance changes were delivered at the beginning of a season rather than months before it, allowing that meta to be created and to rest.

Typically, yeah, but they also typically have a significant and often life-saving bump when they move from P2P to F2P, SWTOR did, ESO did, Wildstar did not. It got a very mild bump, but nowhere near what other games did. That indicates that it was not just the price, although it’s fair to argue it would have done better if it’d launched B2P, but clearly even for free, most players did not want what they were selling, and what they were selling were classic hard mode raids.

I brought up IP for a reason

“Hey that star wars game went free” “yeah let’s go play with LIGHTSABERS”

GW2 doesn’t fall into the traps of traditional MMORPGs. It doesn’t suck your life away and force you onto a grinding treadmill; it doesn’t make you spend hours preparing to have fun rather than just having fun; and of course, it doesn’t have a monthly fee.

I get the feeling context may be being missed here, and that these are specific retorts to specific MMO tropes.
“Suck your life away and force you onto a grinding treadmill” this is specifically referring to gear treadmills which invalidate the gear you earnt from prior content by raising ilvl and lvl caps on intervals. GW2 hasn’t done this beyond the initial releases of Ascended gear. You could argue Viper’s>Sinister I suppose but it’s not like Sinister is a toilet tier set.
“Doesn’t force you to spend hours preparing to have fun instead of having fun” frankly this seems like more of a contest of the issues with HoT maps rather than raids. We have to first establish that you would indeed have fun in the raids they’ve implemented, lest we forget that raids are the content specifically designed for people who enjoy this kind of buildup and climax (that’s what she said). Turning it from “you don’t need to grind on a treadmill” (which you broadly do not) into “you should enjoy all the content in the game that we put out” is unfair in a big-tent MMO.

We founded this company because we wanted to shake up a risk-averse industry, and show that game companies don’t have to just keep making the same games over and over again to be successful. We believe that gamers want to try new things, new experiences, and that they’ll reward the companies who can bring them something new.

Which doesn’t really strike me as a permanent position but more of an insurgent/underdog position thing to say. Which they were- and they already have shaken up the risk-averse industry and shown that game companies don’t have to just keep making the same games over and over again to be successful. Problem is that they’re no longer the insurgent and they can hardly be thought of as the underdog to anything but WoW.

Don’t forget that we have to keep this position in context with the releases we’ve seen about the response rate to raids, including things like “resounding success”. If those are to be taken at face value, then the position that shaking up the formula- in this avenue, at least- is wrong.
