A Suggestion For Raids

This was my point exactly. The LS3 community and the community that would benefit most from"easy mode raids" overlap much more than the current raiding community. So it would be most fair if the compromises came at the expense of the overlap versus at the expense of the raid content pacing.

I don’t know whether we’re on the same page here but the logic is bad on a basic level because it assumes people who are currently non-raiders would all become raiders with the diversion of resources.

In reality, the vast majority of people who participate in LS content have no intention of touching raids with a 10-foot pole and an ‘easy mode raid’ would likely do absolutely nothing for them. It’s a waste of time and effort. Reducing LS content on the other hand would have a very real reduction in the game’s ability to retain players.

Like I said tho dunno if we’re on the same page, you probably already know this.

I only ever saw 1 whirl projectile from Gravedigger. I am not really sure though. If its 4 as you said than it should be great on an Ice Field.

If you want to test this have someone create a firefield underneath a big mob. You should see 4 stacks of Burning appear instantly with the Gravedigger finisher.

I would be okay with that so long as the resources came from the ANET teams matches the intended audience for the easy mode, the more casual audience. If they were to take people from the LS3 team and have them work on easy mode raids that could work. Raid team keeps up status quo of content pacing and easy mode raids are made at the expense of LS3. Only ANET knows what kind of expense that would be.

Frankly I would be very, very strongly opposed to easy mode raids if it in any way compromised the regular pacing that they’ve achieved with Living Story episodes so far.

So the question still remains.. how do we make Raids more accessible for all? Since that is the topic that should be discussed about here, and I’m sure the Raid team is discussing this aswell as we’re speaking.

I’ll do my best to cook a few of these points for you.

Should we make even higher, difficult and more rewarding tiers so that new people will be more welcomed into the low original tier?

This isn’t really a tenable solution because, while this may be the initial effect, it won’t last. Eventually, everyone will drift up from the bottom tier and there will be nobody left to participate in that lower level & to help people rise from that point.

At this, you might be thinking “well surely guilds will need to go down and bring people up!” and that’s true but they can already do that with the standing difficulties so there’s no reason to implement tiers in the first place.

Should we add a level-system to Raids that functions as the Li check and then lock the LFG in categories according to your Raid Level?

This is a hard mechanical fix when the problem should ultimately be solved by the community.

Should the Developers add true encounter mechanics from each boss into the Special Forces Training Area so people can practice their minds for the real deal later on?

This is an interesting idea though I think there’s a better spin on it; instead of adding them into the SFTA, add them into new open world bosses or fractals. It won’t work with a lot of high-communication mechanics but the core of most mechanics can be taught in those places.

I am sure there’s many ways to solve this problem that clearly shows in the voices of many people that commented on this thread and other threads so far.

I would like to thank everyone for participating in a thread of which I thought would be beaten to death, and if people still wish to continue commenting then let’s stay on topic here, shall we?

Unfortunately all of these threads boil down into slogs. A handful of people elongate these threads, and the rest who are interesting to talk to tend to leave from boredom.

Two versions of Xera, obviously. And of course there would be a third scenario, either a “hard mode” escort that most raiders would not consider “too easy,” or some other boss encounter entirely, which I think would satisfy both hardcore and easy mode players.

I like this last one, the idea of making entirely different boss encounters. That’s a good idea.

they do pay attention to the forums but their goals aren’t quite the same as yours

people on the necromancer forums want a balanced necromancer with a variety of strong builds that they can play

the balance team’s primary goal is making sure each current elite spec has one viable build

so long as necros are to some degree viable, don’t expect any changes to fundamentals- at best, expect “mucking about” changes like the Spectral changes we saw not long ago

not strictly OT so i’ll give a short response to these

It doesn’t seem to be a problem with weapons. Why do you think it would be a problem with armor?

weapons are different from armor because the best weapon changes on a patch-to-patch basis. even now it’s impossible to tell what the best weapons for any given class will be in a year, because chances are expac 2 will have launched and each class will have even more weapons to pick from.

armor is comparatively simple. what’s your armor class? legendary armor of that class is the best for you. you cannot predict which weapon will be the best in the future in the same way as you can reliably assert that your armor class will remain your class’s armor class (and two other class’s best armor, no less).

(and please, don’t mention again the “mass printing” of legendaries, because it is a complete strawman)

ironically, a strawman itself, as i never posited that mass printing of legendaries will ever happen. it’s an exaggeration for the purpose of illustration. if x happens to the extreme, y will happen to the extreme- it follows that if x happens in a minor amount, y happens in a minor amount.

This is a silly argument.

you wrote so much. to go out of your way to lose my attention in the first sentence is disappointing, though not unexpected

Being “semi” sarcastic “YOU CAN FARM SEAWEED!?!?!?!? WHERE!??!!?”

I think they added a spot in Ember Bay but I haven’t really gone out of my way to find it.

Farming iron ore I know, but…..why sell it? Don’t you need it for most of the ascended items? Or am I wrong? Because I was reading on the wiki about whats needed for making ascended armor and weapons, which are REQUIRED for t4 fractals, and mostly raids, (course you can do them in exotics which is what I do and have had a few clears) and you need a lot of the iron ore. Or is it less expensive to sell it and then rebuy it? Seems odd. I know its just one mat item, but it seems like the one that’s mostly used in most things at endgame…..which is weird since its a t2? t3? mat.

Yes, you need Iron Ore. You need about 135 Iron Ore for each Deldrimor Ingot you plan to make, & it’s what keeps its price so high. But if the demand behind Deldrimor Ingots were to be die (and ascended crafting being irrelevant by mass Legendary printing is one of them), then iron ore is back to 8c prices.

Low tier materials are used in the Ascended crafting process by design & for a very good reason; it gives new players a great way to enter the economy and it gives established players a good reason to go back and participate in downscaled content, explore old zones and have fun with friends who might not be level-capped.

About the other “cool skins” being more expensive. Yeah I’m selfish and wish they were ALOT lower, but that’s mainly because I have problems with making gold, even with the 2g each day. (Oh which I’m VERY glad for them adding, but even with that being added, I still have problems because EVERYTHING at endgame is SO expensive. (food and gear) And that…….meh, it seems like Anet and the players who buy them to then just sell at a later time to get more gold, are the ones controlling the market and keeping the prices high. (And yes I know I could be wrong, but just looking at it seems that way.) So I just settled for basic looks that look realistic over the stupid, or gaudy looks. Though its mainly out of being poor rofl.

Here’s the thing
Let’s imagine we’re in a world where you cannot farm money on a consistent basis with items like Iron Ore. The only way to get the money you need to buy a cool skin is either by getting lucky and getting another cool skin to sell, and then buy the cool skin you want, or by forking out real world money to get gems to convert to gold with which to buy the cool skin.
We all want cool skins but for cool skins to actually be an approachable model for the average player there needs to be the stepping stone of consistently farmable items, and that means materials.

Also…….how are skins that are locked behind dungeons, fractals, LS and raids different between the ones made from mats, like the mystic forge ones?

Items that are dropped and become Bind on Equip are useful incentives to try to entice players to participate in a form of content.
Items that are Bind on Pickup give players a steady means of advancement & provide you with specific targeted goals. Good for getting players to participate in a form of content that they might not otherwise be able to justify doing.

There are advantages to both and reasons to include both in the game.

I know this might be kinda stupid…….but then again I am a stupid idiot, so idc most of the time. But could you explain to me that problems with it? (You can PM if you want to not cause a stir here, I just like learning information) Because, for example, (and I know there are many other ones just using this one atm) I don’t see a good thing from raising the price of ascended to craft. I had JUST started to make ascended for the first time and it was BEYOND expensive, and another reason I put it off for a bit because of it costing so much. But then they go and make it MORE expensive!??! I have no want to go for it now, because it will take two times longer to make and two times more expensive now!?!? sigh

It’s relevant, so I’m happy to go over it with someone new. I’m not really interested in going over it with other people as they have already read these arguments, understand them, and ultimately decide to ignore them.

There are two elements to this which act on one another.

Firstly, ascended materials and their crafting are a fundamental in the economy. The economy and crafting in the game are fundamentally designed to emphasize certain elements. Crafting Ascended armor is one of them; people will always want new armor of the highest possible quality. Crafting food and other consumables is another. The economy being dependent on these two fundamentals is a very good thing as it ensures that every player can participate meaningfully in the economy if they want to; anybody can farm seaweed, anybody can farm iron ore, and because of those two permanent furnaces of demand, players always have a consistent means of expanding their wallet.

The issue with Legendary items is that it permanently pulls demand out of that economy. You no longer need to craft ascended items of that class, because you will get them automatically. In controlled circumstances, this can be alright, but once too high a proportion of the market is crowded out by legendaries, it will cause stagnation.

Hypothetically, let’s say everyone received a set of legendary armor tomorrow, for free: What would be the impact on the market? The price for commonly farmable materials across the board would plummet overnight. Who suffers? New players who have no means to accumulate capital.

There’s an argument to be made that this doesn’t matter because in a self-contained economy, relative pricing is all that matters, rather than absolute pricing. This brings us to item two:

The values of some items are determined by intangibles. This ultimately just ends up boiling down to ‘cool skins’; some items are more expensive than others for no appreciable reason other that taste. There is no fundamental problem with this; the issue is that if you have completely bottomed out the market’s bread and butter (ascended materials & consumables) new & poor players have no reliable means to earn the money they need to participate in the ‘cool skins’ market. An unhealthy economy will, in such a way, ultimately result in creating a huge barrier to appealing to new players, which can be a death sentence for an MMO.

(btw, I have tried all the ways to make gold, run AB multi loot maps, run SW, run fractals, do pvp dailys, do the easy wvw dailys, sell stuff ect ect…….I have the gutter end of luck and still only make about 5g a day, if I do fractals its like 7 or 8, and that’s IF I do them, but I don’t like wasting 2 hours on one boss.)

If you go to Gallowfields Waypoint right now and completely clear the valley of all ores you’ll make 1g for about 3-4 minute’s effort.

In that case, raid will become an obvious scapegoat for a content drought, and if drought will continue at same rate as it was in HoT – a rightful scapegoat. Because there is obviously way too much content for a such little chunk of players who playing it constantly.

There is no such thing as a rightful scapegoat. It is a self-contradictory idea. The essence of scapegoating is to unfairly apply blame.

A lack of content released has never been fairly blamed on raids and likely never will be, especially considering the current state of the game in which ANet seems to have gotten their pipeline issues sorted.

I am not sure if it’s possible but if you blow up worlds would you be able to keep guilds together? I think quite a few would be more apt to like it as long as they can stay in the same world as their guild.

A very lazy analysis on my part; yes, it would be very easy to keep guilds together. Players nominate a guild before the explosion; all players who nominated the same guild will be sent to the same server.

The problem is when people either game the system (make a guild explicitly to nominate so that 500 players remain on the same server) or when people have multiple guilds to whom they are equally invested and therefore can’t make a decision.

We could have Necro GS auto similar to Guard Hammer, where the third attack doesnt give 2 sec chill to 5 targets but instead places an Ice Field on the ground that lasts for 2 seconds, and pulses 1 second of chill and damages for 3 times. Some of the auto’s damage is reduced to compensate for the damaging field, but it should be made that its an overall damage buff to GS.

This would be pretty interesting and would likely make hybrid Greatsword a very strong option for PvE. It might actually do some meat in PvP but not much.

Gravedigger could perform 3 whirl finishers instead of of one as it feels silly and redundant that an animation that powerful only has one. Due to the nature of whirl finishers, they are unreliable on range as they dont track really well, however, they can their target with great accuracy on melee. So with this change Gravedigger also allows you to stack a lot of condis if you use it on a combo field.

Gravedigger is a 4xWhirl finisher

You wouldn’t lose an upgraded structure if you actually had people defending it or watching the map for white swords.

Watch tower was one of the dumbest upgrades added that destroyed small group play.

These two ideas don’t really go well together.

If you won’t lose an upgraded structure if you have someone protecting or observing map, then why precisely is watchtower an issue? Watchtower is basically just a surrogate for a scout.

The only situation in which it actually matters is when you have so few people that you cannot actually observe all your objectives. Which is only on night hours.

So there’s an upgrade that makes it harder to nightcap towers.

I use both.

Well trait’s bad.
Banshee’s Wail isn’t horrible but is horribly outclassed by Vamp Aura in most circumstances, even in sPvP where it’s at its least powerful.
Fair enough if you’re playing fun/dorky builds but it’s not really fit for purpose.

What build are you talking about?
I was making a general statement about Blood Magic based on your definition of how a specialization can provide control. No one said anything about a specific build.

US/BB.

Do you not read your own posts? It’s exactly what you said.

Also, again, you’re wrong about Blood Magic.

Do you not read my post? Transfusion is not exclusively there for healing. More than half of its value is moving bodies away from stomps, wasting enemy time. It’s a utility trait far more than it is a healing trait, seeing as it does a relatively minor amount of healing.

I’m not even saying BM is bad. It’s a very good traitline. But it doesn’t fit into US/BB as well as Spite does.

So you don’t like Blood Magic because you think it lacks utility, but your best argument for Death Magic/Unholy Sanctuary is: it’s better than nothing when when you’re forced to stay in Shroud with everything else on cooldown.

No, I like Blood Magic. It’s a good traitline (for throughput, at least, I think its design is mediocre but is still carried by high-powered traits).

Also, in this fictional scenario where you’re low on hp and apparently some people are fighting you, thus making you stay in Shroud, how many Blighter’s Boon procs and US tics can you really get out of this?

US ticks? I dunno. 10?
Blighter’s Boon ticks, I’d say about 20-40 in that time, from full LF. Sigil of Strength, Infusing Terror, AA swings with Spite Might generation. If the target is under the threshold, more. Spiteful Spirit will generate up to 5 ticks of BB for roughly 800 HP with no healing power. Spiteful Spirit will feed you more BB the more often you enter DS, constantly flipping DS just for the SS and BtV is pretty helpful.

If you’re really pressured enough to the point where you can’t leave Shroud, you’re probably taking a significant amount of damage and/or being stunned several times. So maybe you can auto attack a couple of times and heal, what… 1k or 2k hp? And that’s only when you’re facing semi-afk opponents.
Not impressed.

You’ll pull 1k HP just from a good Spiteful Spirit hit lol

That’s a rather out-of-context definition though.
With that logic I could also argue that Blood Magic gives more “control” if you’re using Banshee’s Wail to improve Wail of Doom, or Vampiric Rituals to lower the cooldown of Well of Corruption, or have Blood Bond corrupt boons because you’ve picked Signets of Suffering as well.

But you don’t run Banshee’s Wail. You do run boonstrip and boonflip effects in Spite, Chill of Death being the only worthwhile Master pick.
But you don’t run Vamp Rituals. If you aren’t running Transfusion, you’re missing the strongest support skill Necros have and honestly the point of running Blood (unless you’re MM(in which case Transfusion is your best trait there by far anyway)).
And you don’t run Spite+Blood with this build, because the build needs Death Magic or it fundamentally doesn’t work.

I get where you’re going with this, but based on that argumentation it’s wrong to say that Blood Magic is nothing but a dps and healing buff.

That is a thing I did not say. I simply said it does not provide the utility that you need to be effective, with Necro’s current role.

Well, what if I told you that – regardless of what build you have – camping Shroud and spamming #1 is probably the least effective thing you could do as a necro, for both offense and defense. So making some comparison between specializations based on that is totally pointless.

Camping Shroud and spamming #1 while playing an Unholy Sanctuary build might be ‘the least effective thing you could do’ but it may be your only option.

If your health is low and your LF is high and US is on CD, you need to camp DS and heal up. If you are camping and healing up and everything’s already on CD, the only thing there is to do is AA.

And vitality is far from a bad stat, it’s recommended on its own simply for the sake of already giving you double the HP it gives everyone else. Am I saying it’ll turn you into an unstoppable monster, no, but it’s marginal with other defense stats for regular necros and it helps you a lot for a US build.

No, because I run solo regularly, clearing camps and towers across the board. Soloed keeps during primetimes after Watch Towers were added.

Look, if you want to take an objective that people have invested time and effort into upgrading to T3, you have to put resources towards it. A 5 man team won’t cut it nor should it when you are targeting a deep tower. Prioritize southern towers before pushing northern towers.

Control? As opposed to which other spec?

Spite has boonstrip and chill.
Curses has access to boonstrip and weakness.

I think you don’t understand Blood Magic.
Vamp traits are currently by far our best sustain option. And that’s just one part of BM, there’s more to it than just Transfusion, you know.

I know that Vamp traits give you the best sustain. It is a strong line, but it is not necessarily what you want for a necromancer. You are fundamentally dependent on applying outgoing pressure and Blood Magic does not do that, the raw sustain you gain does not outweigh the cost unless you are relying on Transfusion/Vamp Aura to apply key support to allies while also sustaining yourself.

That’s not true. US and Blighter’s in Shroud heal for a static amount of hp, the size of your lf pool has no influence on that.

You don’t understand.

US will heal you for longer because people are attacking you in DS. Your degen will not change, you will still be able to camp DS for 25 seconds, but your raw Life Force pool will increase, decreasing the proportions by which enemies can reduce your ability to camp DS.

Blighter’s Boon heals for a static amount of HP, but I’m talking about DS HP, not HP. You will gain more Death Shroud- as a raw health amount- and because you are therefore able to camp Death Shroud longer, you will be able to spam your DS skills for longer, and therefore generate more healing through Spite’s granted Might.

Quickly reviewing…

I think some opportunity costs would involve:

  1. Strong server identities with existing servers will be watered down
  2. Easier coordination with TeamSpeak will be reduced
  3. Server Choice Overload – Too many things to pick from the menu is confusing

Reducing the popcap might have ripple effects that I can’t think of atm.

Free transfers will only increase the effects of stacking if not done correctly, or it might not have any impact…if players don’t use it the way ANet wants them to.

Those aren’t opportunity costs. Those are design flaws.

Opportunity cost is “how much developer time will it take”, as developers might otherwise be working on something else. Also monetary opportunity cost from providing free server transfers.

If it takes 5 minutes for someone to spin up 3 new link servers, another 5 minutes to get someone to put “if (serverpop=medium){this.transferPrice=0;}” into code, and another 5 minutes to drop the pop cap to 80% of what it currently is, then there’s not really a reason not to do it from an opportunity cost standpoint. 15 minutes of work for their experiment, ezpz.

Of those actual complaints the only one I think has much merit is the first one but I don’t even know if that’s a real one. Blackgate will still be Blackgate, Tarnished Coast will still be Tarnished Coast, everyone will still be everyone as things only start happening when players start transferring out- and a lot of identity is carried in guilds rather than the server. TS is not an issue with API keys available for bot automation & WvW-wide teamchat. Server choice overload is as funny as saying there are only 9 deck slots in Hearthstone so people don’t get confused, though I don’t really mind the idea of protections for new players who picked a random server and then need to transfer to WvW with friends.

  1. Yes – Liked your honest answer.
  2. No – Was trying to ask you if you would move away from Kaineng to help ANet Balance Population. If every 6 out of 10 players would move when asked to help Balance Population…then opening New Worlds is a really good solution. Because players will help Balance things.

If Kaineng was stacked to the point that I was unable to get my friends onto the server to play with, I would.

Just asking the question while ignoring the context of the current state of the game doesn’t make any sense.

Hmmm…while we’re trying to come up with a solution that reduces the direct impact of Server stacking to Match-Ups…

Can we also work on coming up with solution that:

  1. Allows friends & family to play together even if they’re from different Home Servers
  2. Allows Off-peak capping, but let players to work out a solution themselves

1. cheap transfers
2. off-peak capping is ‘fine’ in that it’s a futile/overly expensive problem to try to solve

Would you move to these new servers right now if they suddenly opened?

Also, in the future…would you voluntarily move to help ANet balance things?

If 6 out of 10 people consistently reply yes…then…we’ve got a viable solution…imho

Sorry, but I’m very simple when it comes to math & complex discussions tend to confuse me…hope this gives you a better perspective in finding an answer.

I’m on Kaineng. Does that answer your question?

I’ve got to wonder and I’d really be keen on an answer for this

What precisely is the opportunity cost for creating new servers, reducing the popcap for all servers, and opening free transfers to all new & medium servers?

I don’t pretend to speak for them, but I haven’t known them to complete a next big priority in 22 days before.

you’re misusing ‘big’
1u1d isn’t actually that big a project; it may be a ‘high priority’ but it isn’t big
skirmish rewards restructuring and UI changes may be big, but a lot of that work has likely been completed already

Just remove the 1 second cool down on Empowering Might for Guardian and BAM! you have another might stacker.

Guardians should get a trait that grants Might to people standing in their symbols. Probably in Zeal.

As one of the few who runs Zealot’s Necro, I don’t think Power Necro was ever actually bad (at least since specializations were introduced), just that other options were better. Of course, I run the sustain game, which requires either Unholy Sanctuary or Blighter’s Boon to work (blood magic life steal is still a bit too weak to work it alone).

Interesting, I would’ve though BM would compliment DM and BB; you heal every hit, as well as for every Boon you gain when you hit (Spite Might) and you have a passive heal from Unholy Sanc. How wouldn’t BM work well in a sustain build? Normally you run Minions for the added defenses and to draw aggro, so BM also gives them lifesteal for both you and themselves. I’m just confused here, I can see why DM would be good cuz you gain more Power from that Trait line as well as a few additional defenses (not much but good enough). Idk I just always thought BM and DM worked well together.

BM is subpar because it has no output. As a necro you need to control targets and BM does not do that at all. It is good for transfusion and raw damage, but transfusion is middling utility and you get more raw damage out of spite.

Spite on the other hand has Might on LF1 which would actually let you camp DS for healing between Unholy Sanc and Blighter’s Boon, and also has the severely underrated Spiteful Spirit, which takes chunks out of people on practically no cast time, strips boons, and grants up to 5 ticks of retal (and therefore 5 ticks of Blighter’s Boon).

With Axe being quite a bit more powerful, including Ghastly Claws having higher damage than Gravedigger, Unholy Fervor has become extremely powerful for any power build. CD reductions on Ghastly Claws and Unholy Feast are massive- and again Unholy Feast feeds your BB for even more gains.

One place I would differ with Drarnor would be to think about running Magi’s or possibly a Magi’s/Zealot’s mix (Mender’s, basically). A bigger life force pool means your % gains from Ghastly Claws and Blighter’s Boon provide that much more life force, and therefore that much more raw HP from the Unholy Sanc conversion and DS1 spam .

What about killing all npcs before ring goes up. Some camps on dl still have npcs out side the ring Un aggroed but can still be fliped

These are escorts and quartermaster.

Quartermaster doesn’t matter.

Would be better if escorts (all veterans, really) pulled when the supervisor is pulled.

This is probably not the answer you are looking for, but I would recommend simply buying Eternity. People sell it at a significant discount because they still get the Twilight and Sunrise skins.

Once.

Moved from Tarnished Coast to Kaineng because Kaineng is a link server and link servers get more variety in friends.

I like a mix of 2 and 3.

- Borderlands don’t really need to be called ‘x server borderlands’. They can have more flavorful names; they don’t even need to be named after their color. This is especially the case when you eventually release a third borderlands map. If you called Alpine Borderlands something like ‘Mistbound Alpines’, it would still make sense. This is particularly noteworthy in the context of Desert borderlands; if you say Fire Keep is under attack, you know where it is automatically regardless of which server actually owns the BL.
- Displaying announcement tags could run through something like this:
Guild majority && 3+ players
else
Server majority
else
Host realm name

We wouldn’t force players to move worlds but stacked worlds would have a high chance of never opening for transfers again since we would be lowering the population player cap on all worlds. So for example in NA worlds like Blackgate and Jade Quarry would stay “Full” and wouldn’t be open for transfers unless player started to transfer off.

I see no problem with this.

One minor thing I’d do though would be to open free transfers from these servers which are likely to be locked for a long while to the new servers you create, or even to all medium pop servers & the new servers.

Veteran WvW players played when the rewards were crap and changing rewards won’t change how they play. However, I worry that adding rewards for winning, either skirmish or match, will create a snowball effect that will give a winning server a boost in population/coverage as the fairweathers come out which will lead to lower participation for the losing servers later in the week.

I feel this poll is a lose-lose.

Doesn’t this ultimately end up with more people playing WvW overall, and the rise in active population will seal high-tier servers from transfer for longer, so the impact’s overall pretty well cushioned?

Honestly there are pages and pages of text, and I’m still not sure what the point is.

I think it’s “I want easier content. Only raids suffice.”

Nah, “I want the things these other people have without putting in the same amount of effort”.

No matter which way you push or pull the discussion they never budge on eventually getting the same skins as everyone else, up to and including legendary armor.
