I got the email saying the gifts were sent so I excitedly logged in thinking I could finally finish Meteorlogicus and guess what…..STILL no gifts. I’m so frustrated, I’m ready to spit blood!
Am I legendary yet!?
Well I received the email saying gifts were sent but guess what….I just logged into game and STILL no gifts. This has gone well beyond being frustrating…..

Been 7 days now and still nothing. Name is Veomar and I can verify I got map completion because I have the star next to my name so I didn’t miss a POI or anything, just never received my gifts on feb 26 when I completed it. As well on the character select screen it lists Veomar as 100% map completion. And this is the last thing I need to finish my Meteorlogicus.

Guys I was looking around other forums and apperently Gaile said this about an hour ago on this thread: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/account/100-Map-Completion-and-no-gift/page/2
“I checked with the dev working on this fix yesterday, and he confirmed the below was accurate to the best of his knowledge.
With the March 4th build:
everyone from this date forward will receive the proper rewards
everyone who got or gets WC will sport the star in game
everyone who accomplished World Complete prior to February 18th will receive his/her rewards and star (if not previously distributed) with the build
Customer Support will be:
giving any missing Gifts of Exploration for those who accomplished World Complete between February 18 and March 5
distributing without the need for a ticket, but if you have a ticket, that’s fine, too.
So please check those dates. If you achieved World Complete between February 18 and March 5, we will be sending you your rewards but please allow a day or two more to get that taken care of.
If you have issues other than those described, we invite you to submit a ticket so we can review those on an individual bases.
Thanks for your patience with this and remember, we’re here to help if you still need assistance!”
Well I sure hope Gaile is right since I was told 24 hours from feb 26th and now it’s March 4….little more than 24 hours…..
Am I legendary yet!?
I too have gotten that same message 6 days ago from Michael the game support lead and as pointed out, supposedly they were gonna send gifts out once per day. Well its been 6 days now and I have resubmitted a ticket and was told they understand the frustration and they are currently working on a fix and appreciate the patience. So bottom line in my book is rent a monkey, a dartboard and 1 blindfold. Then have the monkey blindfolded and have it throw a dart at the board and what number it hits will be the number of weeks till we see our gifts.
Am I legendary yet!?
Well 5 days now and still nothing…..what happened to the customer service supposedly mailing these out within 24 hours of completion?
Am I legendary yet!?
Still waiting for my 2 Gifts of Exploration……
Am I legendary yet!?
Add me to that list too. Just completed map completion with the last being the new POI in sanctum harbor out at that drilling machine and now no chest with my 2 tokens. Come on Anet, why is there something new broken with every patch.

All of you guys waiting to craft a precursor might as well start grinding gold now to buy one off the TP. You all know that they aren’t gonna make them something as easy as a 100g or anything and I’m sure it’s gonna one serious time sink to make it or the components if sellable are gonna be bigtime cash. Look at the Grenth and Dwayna ascended back items. That’s prolly just a fraction of what would be needed. My bet is there will be 2 options, the quick and expensive way which involves buying the mats off the TP for crazy prices which will rival the cost of a precursor now or option 2 which will be a long time gated system which will take 2-3 months to make. Or I guess there is an option 3 which is a little of option 1 and 2. Regardless don’t kid yourself into thinking its gonna be some weekend project you can whip out. And as we all see, Anet is going the way of the grind so I would guess this is gonna be the biggest grind of all.
Am I legendary yet!?
The Watchwork Mining Pick doesn’t have a 20% chance of something ‘extra’. It converts the chance to gain additional ore nodes (harvesting critical chance, if you will) to gaining WW Sprockets instead.
And as it was pointed out, you actually lose money this way, compared to a Molten or Bone Pick, because instead of ore that’s worth 30c-2s, you gain a sprocket that sells for 30c.
It’s a convenience item in the way that you don’t need to sell stuff to buy sprockets off the TP but get them right away.To me the Consortium Sickle is still the best out of all the Permasickles, simply because the animation is fast, the sickle isn’t ugly and the effect is pretty. And I don’t think they will add one that gives Pristine samples, because you can always get them in Kessex, and you need only a few for recipes and a sickle would break that.
Actually this is wrong. I’ve pulled 4 ori ores, 2 sprockets and 1 sapphire off of 1 ori node. I’ve also pulled a gem AND sprocket off of 1 hit on the node and still got 3 ores. From what I’ve seen of it, the chance of sprockets is an independent table from gems and ores just like the table from gems and ores are separate.

@Drakent
I really think you missed the boat when it was already proven time and time again with hard numbers that melee weapons trump short or longbow on a ranger by a good amount. That’s half the complaints of a lot of rangers now in the fact that ranged on rangers is pretty much a joke. Hell a warrior using longbow has better dmg than a ranger with a longbow. Go figure. Longbow is decent in WvW but we are talking PvE. Since you don’t want to believe anyone, you should really roll a warrior, level it, gear it out as well as you claim your ranger is and go atk stuff. You will see a day and night. I thought my ranger did good dmg. Then I made other classes and leveled them and now I think ranger does ok dmg at best.
And by you camping that 1000 range from the group, you bring absolutely nothing in the sense of utility. Spotter wont reach that far, frost spirit wont work and unless you are running up into melee to drop healing spring, that is a waste too. Keep playing that way if you like but if I was in a fractal or dungeon with you, I would kick you for being a useless bearbow and replace you with anything else.
Don’t get me wrong, I use Kudzu and Dreamer on my ranger in the second slot(LB or SB depending what build im running that day) but my main weapons are ascended 1h sword/dagger. Sometimes I will go 1h sword/warhorn too but again in PvE, bows are pretty lackluster as far as dps goes. I still love using them in open world though since after all, I was dumb enough to make both Kudzu and Dreamer among a few other legendaries on other chars.
Am I legendary yet!?
My thought would be just give me a free level 80 reroll voucher and a voucher to turn in Kudzu and Dreamer for 2 different legendaries. All the armors and ascended trinkets and back item can just be scraped for all I care. We all know Anet doesn’t care for ranger and is never gonna actually fix the class. Its all just empty promises and broken dreams.
Am I legendary yet!?
To the ppl who say ranger sucks
My Pve Ranger
Attack power : 3.2k
Critical chance : 100%
Critical Damage : 100%
Auto attack damage 2.5k every 3/4 sec
Rapid fire 13k every 8 sec
This all done with 0 might stack and 0 stack of sigil of blood lust, with 25 stack of each I have done 40k with rapid fire…. so to all who think ranger cant out dps a war you can suck it cus war got nothing on my ranger but some stupid banners
Sad part is pretty much any other class that builds for pure DPS like your build is will do more damage in a shorter amount of time while still offering more group utilities/buffs. All this while still having better survivability than the full glass cannon ranger.
And I call BS on a 40k rapid fire unless you are counting rabbits in Frostgorge or dredge fractal boss. I’d like to see a screenshot of a 40k rapid fire.
I personally love playing my ranger but like others have said, if you plan to do dungeons, roll a different class for that and use your ranger for other stuff. I have 6 level 80s and for dungeons I run my guard, warrior, Mesmer or ele. For open world, ranger is really fun and necro is pretty fun too but both those classes lack a lot for dungeons.

I’m assuming this is for PVP cause all the builds I’ve seen put up so far are crap for PVE. Putting points into toughness tree for PVE is an utter waste and you might as well just 4 man dungeons without that guard cause he is contributing next to nothing. Better off with a nice dps hammer build with perma protection. Something like a 15/15/0/20/20 or of you are comfortable with purging flames, just run a 25/15/0/20/10. Both of those builds will give you great dps, perma group protection and enough condi cleanse for most stuff in PVE of course.
How many words into the OP did you read?
I read the whole thing. The part I wasn’t clear on was the “skill group” part. If he meant dungeon runs since I don’t really understand what a skill group would be in PVP unless he’s talking team PVP. Regardless, like I said in the first sentence of my post, I’m assuming he means purely from a 100% PVP standpoint since like I said, any of these builds listed are pretty crappy for PVE.

Not to mention, why the hell do I want to look like a neon spiderman? :P I like the jetpack but I missed out on it. But like I said, the best in my opinion still is the ascended capacitor. Its noticeable but not completely overpowering and over the top.
Am I legendary yet!?
If only Anet didn’t make them look stupid like neon spider legs growing out of your back. Personally if I was gonna go for that look, I’d rather use the scelerite one but too bad you cant get it anymore.
Am I legendary yet!?
Grats but I think I will just stick with my ascended capacitor. That new back piece is freakin hideous looking. Looks like spider legs growing out of your back.
Am I legendary yet!?
What they added doesn’t equate to basically destroying a legendary to achieve it. I personally would much rather either have 2 chars each with a legendary GS or 1 char with the option to switch between a “darkside” or “lightside” GS at will. But to each their own.
Am I legendary yet!?
What the hell else you gonna spend gold on? I made a full set of ascended armor because I have full ascended trinkets/back and 4 almost 5 legendaries. Nothing else to really do except make ascended armor.
Now as for it being needed, I agree with most that its not a requirement unless you like doing fractals. Otherwise, I really doubt anyone could tell the difference between someone in ascended gear vs exotics. I personally like fractals so that was another reason for me to make it. Now im sitting at 73 AR so im pretty gtg for fractals for awhile.
I think Anet made ascended armor the way it is cause they didn’t want there to be a huge advantage gap between armors in PVP. Now if they made it like legendaries in the way you can swap stat sets, that would be pretty sweet and definitely make it worth it overall.
Am I legendary yet!?
Just run SYG. You have plenty of time to dodge backwards when he comes out of stun but if for some reason you miss it and get knocked down, hit SYG and kite it in a circle.
Am I legendary yet!?
I sure hope that build you linked isn’t a PvE build Vella cause that’s pretty horrible. Valor tree is pretty worthless in PvE and AH is even more worthless. Not taking 15 in radiance to spam aoe blinds? And you need at least 10 in virtues for master of consecrations for longer WoR on shorter cooldown which is our bread and butter. 20 in virtues if you need condi cleanse with absolute resolution along with slotting renewed focus gives you the ability to strip 6 condi in a few secs. And why are you running larger symbols over shorter cooldowns on shouts since shouts will make the most use of AH along with prot from hammer obviously.
I personally don’t really use absolute resolution anymore since purging flames is usually enough for me. I run a 25/15/0/20/10 build with either zealous blade for times I run a greatsword or scepter power. This build is my PvE hammer build btw which also works well with GS/scepter.
To each their own I guess but I really wouldn’t advertise that build as a PvE hammer build. It’s not even a good anchor build really either even though anchor builds are pretty outdated now.
And to pretty much answer the OPs question, Warriors are more straightforward simple class to play while guard is more of a reactive play. I main a guard for fractals and dungeons and run my warrior when I want braindead open world stuff since LB is pretty OP on warrior :P Neither is really better than the other, just 2 different play styles.

That is a great idea Scorpius but it would crush NcSoft’s cash cow which just isn’t allowed. And for those that don’t know, Anet is just the puppet to NcSoft who are the publishers and the real financial backing in this game.
Am I legendary yet!?
The new pick can mine gems AND sprockets in 1 hit on Ori nodes. From 1 Ori node, I got 3 ori ore, 2 gems and 1 sprocket all in 3 hits.
Am I legendary yet!?
Actually the people running this game are NcSoft. They are the publishers, Anet is just the devs so the bottom line is called by NcSoft who if you played Lineage 2 or Aion, you know full well they are a cash grab shop company that really only cares about the mighty dollar and care less about the game itself. Pretty much get used to stuff like the new pick as the new norm or start looking for a new game.
Am I legendary yet!?
After many years of playing MMOs, one thing I have learned is never put your faith in them. You be let down constantly. All companies are the same, businessmen. They really care less about the enjoyment or satisfaction as long as the bottom line is met and that’s really all that matters to them. Once a game becomes non profitable, they will dump it like a hot potato and move on. That being said with the sour taste in my mouth and all, I probably will still purchase one of the new picks just cause I know Anet will do nothing to rectify this.
Am I legendary yet!?
The old picks still do work technically but realistically would you equip it over the new pick? No, so in essence it doesn’t work anymore for all intent and purpose. So really the old picks do become obsolete if you purchase the new pick. So your choice boils down to buy the new pick and start collecting sprockets and have obsolete old picks or use your old picks and have an obsolete item since there is a better version out.
Am I legendary yet!?
According to Anet before the game was even released, they said they didn’t want a gear treadmill. Well guess what, we got a treadmill.
We don’t have a gear treadmill. We just got ascended gear.
For it to be a treadmill, you would have to need the ascended gear to progress in the game, which you don’t. You would have to get new and better gear from that new content that you could progress to thanks to ascended gear – oh wait, that doesn’t exist…You’re just making up problems and catastrophes where there are none.
Too bad exotic gear was supposed to be the best, then they added ascended. What’s next, ascended V2? Go back and read the manifesto where Anet said they don’t want another MMO where you have to mindlessly kill mobs to advance. Guess what, you Do have to mindlessly kill stuff to advance.
Oh wait, by your reasoning since we don’t NEED the new pick, then we don’t need any armor other than greens(blues if you don’t do dungeons) and we don’t need any tools except for the Ori stuff. Oh wait, we actually don’t need any tools since we don’t need crafting cause you can just buy blues or greens off the TP.
And btw what you are talking about is called “gated content” where you need certain gear to progress and yes that’s in the game too. Look at fractals and agony resist. Try doing fractals 30+ with no agony and see how well you do.
So while you are right to an extent in that you don’t need any gear or crafting to do most of the content, you do need certain gear to progress in fractals which is really the only “new” content.
Am I legendary yet!?
Oh I really didn’t expect Anet to refund me but was worth a try. It opened my eyes though to be wary of purchasing anything from them since with this item, we all can clearly see which direction they are going. I imagine every 6 months or so they will start pumping out an “upgraded” version of an item to keep the cash flowing in the gem store. I’ve played enough MMOs to know that in most case, once they get your money, you will see very little response or help unless they want more of your money.
Am I legendary yet!?
Personally I hope they make ascended 2.0 as I’ve finished full ascended on my guard and almost my 5th legendary. I need something new to do other than leveling a 9th level 80. My biggest complaint really is that 1-2 month ago Anet offered the molten alliance trio of tools for 2850 gems knowing that they were gonna release this pick. It’s like they wanted to do a cash grab. Not very cool and more of a slap in the face to your customer base. But whatever, at the end of day, a game doesn’t really affect your life and there will always be a new game popping up. Let’s hear it for EQNext!!!
Am I legendary yet!?
1) Anything that gives another player an advantage over another no matter how small is still a “win”. Whether it be 1 point or 0.000001 point, it is still more than the other person.
2) I was using the skills as an example of what Anet CAN do since with this new pick, it raises the vertical progression higher. So by making the same skills but with say a higher dmg or longer duration and by selling it on the gem store, it would be a vertical progression also.
3) And again another player who missed the point. Coming out with a new item is no big deal and is to be expected but adding vertical progression to an item which has been equal to those bought from vendors and considered as a cosmetic or convienence item is the argument since this one item opens the door to other items being sold in the gem store as vertical progression thus widening the gap between players aka skills for example in my answer #2.
4) See answer 3.
5) Again see answer 3.
6) While GW2 at the moment is not full on P2W, the direction they are going again with the vertical progression leaves it very open to a P2W system. Again they can add a new tier of class skills and sell them on the gem store. They could put new recipes in that add more rune or sigil slots and sell them on the gem store. They can release new axes that reward maybe an ecto or something or a new harvest tool that rewards something or in a couple months when sales on the new pick flatten, make another pick that gives sprockets AND quartz crystals. Regardless they can do whatever and all those examples would lean more and more towards a P2W system.
And finally you do know GW2 is actually run by NcSoft and if you have ever played Lineage 2 or Aion, you know that their cash shops were their main focus.
1) Pay to win doesn’t relate to convenience. Pay to win means having a statistical advantage head to head with another player who did not spend the money you did.
Where in the world does someone getting a freaking sprocket out of a mining node with a 20% chance translate to statistical advantage over another player?2) Again, a gathering tool has nothing to do with vertical progression.
And no, Anet won’t start releasing “high tier” skills with better modifiers or durations.
They most likely only added the sprockets to this pick simply because at the end of this living story, the only other source of sprockets will be the nodes from this patch’s meta achievement. They’re simply trying to make sure there will still be sprockets around to those who want them.3) Again, not vertical progression.
Also, the only similarity between the vendor picks and the molten pick is that they can mine the same nodes. The molten pick is a one time investment, and now you can make a one time investment that also maintains sprockets in the market.4+5) Smooth said it.
6) “..GW2 at the moment is not full on P2W..” GW2 has NO P2W at all, and they’re not taking any direction with vertical progression other than them adding ascended gear, which we’ve known would come since Fractals was introduced late 2012.
Ascended gear was made to serve the purpose of adding infusion slots, they chose to make a full set of ascended instead of just accessories.
If those 2% stat increase bothers you, then that’s your issue, I personally don’t care about that minor stat increase.
1) It is still an advantage although only a 45cp advantage atm.
2) Going from a pick that only gather ore to a pick that gathers ore AND sprockets is vertical progression. And no I don’t agree they only did this to pick up where the living story leaves off since quartz crystals were taken out when that part of the living story left and the only way to acquire those is from a home node, same as the sprocket node. And both are used for armor recipes.
3) Again going from 2 picks that do the same thing other than one being a cosmetic/convienence thing to one that will give resources only attainable by that item is an upgrade, not just a convienece.
6) Reread my #6. I never said GW2 was full on P2W but this could very well be the start of it. Who are you to guarantee they don’t make upgraded skills? How do you know. According to Anet before the game was even released, they said they didn’t want a gear treadmill. Well guess what, we got a treadmill. Unless you got facts to back up your statement of Anet is not going vertical progression, then your statement is just a guess just like mine except I do have the fact we went from 2 picks which only harvested ore and gems to now a pick that harvests all that PLUS sprockets.
Am I legendary yet!?
I agree Mystic. This thread has become like beating a dead horse. You know full well Anet will not do anything about this and if sales are good, they probably will actually create other items like this and I honestly expect to see a new pick in 6 months tops that betters the one out now once sales flatten on this new one.
Anyways guys, live with it or move on. EQNext goes on public display end of this month so there is hope for that in a year. :P
Am I legendary yet!?
They will definately not change the pick now its released. The question for me is, if they gonna add that feature to the old picks as well or if they give out refunds for the old ones, if you buy the new one. If we dont hear any feedback until monday, i will buy the new one and ask for a refund for my old one.
They will not give you a refund. I already put a ticket in for one. Their response was “Purchases from the Gem Store are seldom refundable, and in this case we are not able to provide a refund of your purchase. We encourage you to exercise care when conducting all your gem transactions.” I’d love to respond with I’d exercise more care when you quit exercising deceitful practices like offering the Molten Alliance trio of tools for 2850 gems and then 1-2 months later after you took all the money, put out another item which trumps what I just purchased…..keep backhanding your customers Anet and see where you are in a few months……
Did you simply ask for a refund for the old one or did you already buy the new one and now are stuck with 2 picks?
I asked for a refund based on the fact I bought the old molten alliance one when they were released and then bought the bone pick when it came out just to have a different skin since they both functioned the same. Then they released this one which has a bonus my other 2 don’t have so in effect, it renders my other 2 useless since the new one is acct bound as well and who in their right mind would use the older ones over the new one if you had the choice. Thus my old ones will just sit in an alts backpack collecting dust. So the short answer, I’m stuck with 3 picks, 1 useful one and 2 that sit on an alt collecting dust.
Regardless though, the point isn’t about sprockets, it’s about the vertical progression of this item and how if they do it this one item, why not do it to other items or gear or skills or anything in game really. Hell im waiting for them to add legendary armor that will make ascended armor obsolete or maybe legendary trinkets or back items.
I’m done though. You all know Anet is not going to do anything about this and if the sales are good, they will probably add more stuff like this in the future. So be prepared for a new better version of the pick in a few months.
Am I legendary yet!?
Maybe I missed something on the math but it seems the new pick isn’t a particularly good deal. At 200 more gems that is what around 15g right now? Sprockets are under 50 copper… that is around 3500 or so sprockets just to break even.
Actually it’s not 200 more gems unless you are comparing it to the very old molten alliance pick that was soulbound. The new molten picks and bone picks were all 1000 gems as well and the old ones could be converted for free at the BLM to the acct bound ones.
Am I legendary yet!?
You are missing the point. The sprockets alone mean jack. Again it’s the fact that the pick is the beginning of a P2W system. To start with Anet offered the molten trio set 1-2 months ago for 2850 gems knowing that this new pick was going to be released. So in essence they were just cash grabbing with that molten set to customers which is just insulting. Now with the new pick, there is a clearly an advantage with it however small, it is still an advantage. So next they can make a new axe and harvesting tool and then maybe a new kit better than BL ones and sell those on the cash grab store too. After that offer better boosters or new ranks of class skills and then hell why stop there. Maybe offer legendary quality weapons for sale. See what’s happening? Anet has opened the door to the start of a P2W system with this pick and I’m sure the gap between players will increase. So soon it will be “Oh you don’t have the new set of higher tiered skills? Sorry we don’t feel like carrying you in this dungeon. /kick” So while you are most certainly right that a pick that offers a few sprockets is hardly something to get bent over, the idea behind it and direction it looks like Anet is going coupled with like I said the pure cash grab of offering an “obsolete” tool set 1-2 months ago and then this new one in such a short span is starting to show Anets true colors and definitely isn’t going to instill any form of trust to them from their customers.
The fallacies are strong in this one. Allow me to pick this apart (pun intended):
1) The new pick is not P2W by any means. It walks a fine line, but it’s by no means “winning” if I have it over another player.
2) How do you go from “new pick is P2W” to “Oh you don’t have the new set of higher tiered skills”?
3) Please tell me where Anet said that they would never release another infinite tool? A majority of the player based correctly assumed a long time ago that there would be new types in the future. The Molten pick matched up with the Living Story at the time. The Watchwork pick matches up with the Scarlet LS now. AS time goes on, more themed tools will come out.
4) The old infinite tools still work. I can still mine Orichalcum nodes for ever and ever without buying a new tool.
5) Lastly, there’s a difference between wanting the new pick, and needing the new pick. Most complainers merely want the new one. This pattern will occur each time a new tool is released.
6) Adding to my point #1, GW2 is not P2W. Most complainers throwing around that term have no idea what it means. They only want to connect the negative aspect of that term to the game, because they’re upset.

And yes I know what P2W is. Ever play EQ1? Or EQ2? Neither of those games had a cash shop and you had to earn everything you got. Later though SoE did add a cash shop to EQ2 cause they saw that most people are lazy by nature and would rather spend cash for stuff than earn it. This happened in EQ1 too but it was a 3rd party site called Playerauctions and Ebay.

The only thing ArenaNet needs to clarify is if the sprocket chance replaces the extra ore chance because that makes a huge difference in the value of the sprocket bonus.
You can check that yourself by harvesting with it. If you get 3 ores AND a sprocket, then it doesn’t replace it. I’m gonna guess it works like picks do now with gems from nodes. It just gives a chance at an extra item, not count that item in the ore count.

XacTactX summarized it as follows:
These are the main reasons why people dislike the new pick:1. P2W giving out free crafting materials, this is more than the 0c cost per gather on infinite tools.
2. Gear treadmill for infinite gathering items that cost real $$$.
3. No prior warning about having old gathering tools made obsolete. Not much more to add. Eagerly awaiting Anet reply on this situation.
All I see is “wah wah wah”. The old tools are not obsolete by any means, they are still unlimited gathering tools, they still have a purpose. Getting some Watchwork Sprockets from the new pick is hardly game-breaking. They’re worth what, a few copper a piece? The price will only drop as more people gather them with the new pick, it’s called supply and demand. If you check the spidy, they are dropping in price fast. These will most likely be the new Silk Cloth; in great supply without much demand. Oh, and before you argue, “Well there are recipes that require these,” yeah, there are plenty of recipes that require Silk, too, but it still was worthless until recently.
And you are another person who is missing the point. It’s not about the cheap sprockets. It’s about the fact that Anet would do a vertical progression on a gem store item and the fact that they sold molten pick sets 1-2 months ago for 2850 gems knowing full well there was going to be a new and improved pick being released. So basically Anet did a cash grab with that molten alliance tool set and since that probably didn’t work well, they are now gonna cash grab with this new pick. Once these sales flatten out, maybe a new axe that will give an advantage over others and then a harvesting tool to do the same. Once all those sales flatten out, maybe they will design new kits that give more items on a salvage and offer those for sale. See where this is going? There will be no limit or end to how much vertical progression/advantage the cash store items will offer as long as Anet makes a buck thus beginning a full blown P2W system.
Thank god EQNext public debut is end of this month and hopefully soon after they start beta and get the ball rolling. GW2 is going to turn into 1 big P2W shop thanks to NcSoft.

Honestly I’m not sure if it’s Anets fault or not. They are run by NcSoft which as anyone who has played Aion or Lineage 2 knows, they are purely a cash grab company that loves selling anything on the cash shops. I really don’t see this pick as being the end but just the tip of a very HUGE iceberg that is going to turn GW2 into a pure P2W game.

-snip-
`The last pick you will ever need´ apparently it is not as they have released a better pick making the old one obsolete
-snip-
See, here’s the issue.
The old pick is not obsolete. Not in the least. It still does everything it said it does. It also is still true that it is the last pick you would ever need.
You do not need the new pick. You want it because it gives some extra incentive, but that extra incentive is not a necessity. There is a difference.
Newer models have to give you some desire to upgrade, otherwise no one ever would. Why would you buy a PS4 if your PS3 could do everything a PS4 could do? Why would you upgrade your cell phone if the newer model did not offer something better? Short of the item ceasing to function, there would be no incentive to upgrade.
The new pick entices up to upgrade, but we do not have to unless we want to. The old pick still functions. Still does exactly what it claimed, and is the ‘last pick I’ll ever need’ because I don’t have to buy any others.
The problem with your comparison is that the PS4 came out about 7 years after the PS3, not 1-2 months. How would you feel if you bought a PS3 for $399 and then 1-2 months later a PS4 came out for $399 and you couldn’t refund your PS3 and were stuck with it? That’s pretty much what Anet has done to it’s customers by offering the Molten pick 1-2 months ago in a trio set of molten alliance tools for 2850 gems and now offering this new pick.
The real point though is like I’ve stated, the vertical progression of gem store items. This is the first step to a P2W system just like Lineage 2 had and Aion had. But I don’t find it surprising since this game is run by NcSoft, the same people who did those other 2 games. Welcome to the ground floor of GW2 P2W.
And also with this new pick, once they remove Scarlet, you will have no other way of acquiring sprockets unless you have a home node. The other picks functioned exactly like merchant bought Ori picks so they were just a cosmetic/convienence thing and didn’t offer any kind of an advantage. The new picks clearly will offer an advantage however small, it is still an advantage and like I said, probably the first of many in the start of Anet/NcSoft’s money grab.

Like lordkrall said, its not about the sprockets. Its the fact that they are putting in vertical progression items like this in the gem store and the fact that they knowingly sold obsolete items. It makes me question whether anything I buy from the gem store will be upgraded at my expense in a month or 2 and how much vertical progression will it be. Will I need to purchase a pick, axe or harvesting tool to be able to harvest items needed to craft a precursor when they implement that? Will possibly need to purchase new skills via gem store to be competitive in PvE or even PvP? There is no ceiling once you start having vertical progression in a cash store. Then it becomes P2W and the new question will be how big of gap will it be.

I agree the vertical progression on this item is disturbing especially when Scarlet goes away but for me, even bigger is the fact that Anet knowingly sold obsolete items in the gem store. What’s to say they won’t do it again with a new pick in a couple months when this picks sales flatten out. Or maybe they will introduce a new ascended armor with 2 rune slots like the 2 handed legendaries are going to be getting. I mean this whole pick fiasco opens the door to anything.
I really shouldn’t be surprised as this is NcSoft we are talking about and if any of you played other NcSoft games like Lineage 2 or Aion, you know they are purely a cash grab/P2W set up and most of their games crashed and burned except for the fanbois it keeps.

I’d like to see where this definition of P2W being exclusive to PvP too. Pay to win means just that, you are paying to win be it PvE or PvP. In this case, it’s PvE although again, we are talking about sprockets which are pretty cheap. My point is that Anet is willing to sell obsolete items(any pick pre this new pick) with the full on knowledge that said items will become obsolete in a couple of months is just plain underhanded and a slap in the face to it’s customer base.
Now before you Anet bandwagon guys say Apple or Microsoft of any other company does the same by introducing new products, you got to understand, they need to do this to stay competitive with the other companies. Anet has no competition with this pick other than with themselves so the argument about Ipad 3 or 4 is pointless. And when they do introduce a new item, it’s not 1-2 months from the release of their newest item.
What’s to say they won’t introduce a new axe or harvesting tool next and maybe even another pick that is better in say 6 months when the sales of this new pick start to flatten out.

Oh I want a refund too. Is it fair that we get a refund for something we purchased and got our use out of? Probably not. But then again is it fair that Anet knowingly sold us an item they knew was going to be obsolete in a few months? No.
Bottom line is I’m sure most people will be leary about purchasing gem store items now knowing that their item could be obsolete in a couple months.
Am I legendary yet!?
I’m waiting for the next gen pick since they will have to up the game with the sprocket pick. Something like “The Pick of the Devs! This self repairing pick straight from the computers of the devs has a chance to add a precursor to the rewards when used to mine ore veins!”
Stay tuned in 6 months for “The Pick to end all picks! This self repairing pick straight from NcSoft’s Bean counters desk has a chance of adding $100 dollars to your account through your credit card to the rewards when used to mine ore veins!”
After that, it will be GW3 and we will get copper picks that add nothing and the whole process will restart.
Am I legendary yet!?
So what happens if next week they release ascended armor version 2 which has 2 rune slots per piece and costs the same as the ascended now? Would that be fair? How about if they made a new recipe for the grenth and dwayna back items which were infusible but the old ones weren’t? How about a new axe that had a 20% chance to get ecto or a harvesting tool that had a 20% chance to get pristine seeds? See where this is going? You can say what you want but there is no stopping Anet from doing this to any item except maybe legendaries since I think those were actually posted as being BiS. But if not, then they could do this to legendaries as well. How would you feel if all you guys with with 4 or 5 legendaries all of a sudden were sitting on subpar, obsolete weapons?
And I agree, at the end of the day, this whole pick deal makes me leary of buying any kind of equipment other than purely cosmetic items since who knows if the item you purchased a month ago is now obsolete(im looking at you the molten alliance trio of pick/axe/harvesting tool that was offered about a month ago for 2850 gems which now was a worthless purchase for those who bought it)
