New combo field for Engi needs to be lightening. As it is, only Eles can drop them and since we’ve got all the gadgets, it just makes sense. Can be incorporated into Tool Kit or Shield or a toolbelt skill easily enough.

As for ice, meh…frost aura is certainly helpful and we can make them with an ally. But I we don’t have a single “ice” attack and it’s not very fitting from a thematic standpoint.

You make very good points. Mine was simply that Tools has more than 1 decent trait but that unfortunately they’re all 10pt traits.

As to whether traits in other lines are better, I can’t really speak to that. Currently, my Eng is only lvl 36 so I haven’t been able to climb up the traits much yet. Since the OP was focused on “whilst leveling” I thought I’d put in my 2 cents. I’m glad to learn though that as I progress there are good traits spread out amongst other trees, giving me more variation. Through our back-n-forth I’m learning that a) I’m doing things right as of now and b) which direction to head as I continue.

Any gadgets you recommend for use with FT/EG builds? I was using Elixir B (but dropped it since I have 5pts in Alchemy now) and switched to Mine. Being able to booby trap an area with 5 mines and 1 big one with knockback and kite around has been quite useful. I want to try Goggles but I’m wondering if the vulnerability will fall flat since I’m not stacking power. I am however, stacking condition damage and am getting precision thru the traitline (currently around 35%).

Same here. Use to be when I ran across someone in open world it was a warrior, but they faded a way a little to be replaced by guardians. And necros, which faded to be replaced almost completely by mesmers.

Now, I’m constantly competing against other FTs, busting out my EG just to stand out.

I disagree. Static Discharge is fairly strong when coupled with fast recharging toolbelts.
Speedy Kits is a great trait for open world travel. And paired with Invigorating Speed from Alchemy it makes dodging endless.

Unfortunately, these are all 10pt traits, meaning we have lots of choice with 10 pts invested in Tools, but beyond that it’s not that we don’t have good traits, we just don’t have good high-level traits. Grandmaster traits are supposed to be better than Adept, making investing 30pts worth something valuable. However, I’d rather have 3x Adept traits in Tools with my current FT/EG build than 1 of each.

I have no traits into Tools yet, but Static Discharge looked like the obvious choice, so nice to know I’m onto something there. I know that at my low level, I have quite a few conditions on enemies – not nearly up to what my Necro can do, but they do seem to melt away.

Depending on what you slot, I recommend taking a look at Kit Refinement over Static Discharge in the Tools trait line. If your utilities have toolbelt skills with long CDs, then SD might be less help than KR. KR casts a spell upon kit equip (10s iCD, so if you’re bringing 2-3 kits and swapping often, you’ll get some nice free boosts. For instance, swap to Elixir Gun and you get a free Super Elixir (combo field!) before you even get a skill off. Pretty sweet. Check the wiki for what each kit swap casts.

As far as stacking conditions, FT toolbelt + Poison Dart Volley + Static Shot + Elixir Gun’s Fumigate and you have burning, poison, confusion, blindness, & vulnerability in 3 skills. Swap back and pepper in some pistol auto-attack and you can add bleeding to that mix.

Do all that with Kit Refinement you’ve also got a healing field around you that can be blast finished with Elixir Gun #4 for area retaliation and create some distance.

This is my standard opening salvo btw. When they get close again (and if they’re not dead [not likely] then I FT em to ash.

I recently reformatted my computer and installed Vista 32-bit. Since then, I’m getting frequent “Out of Memory” crashes. Apparently, this is due to running a 32-bit system with 4GB of RAM. Is there a workaround other than installing a 64-bit OS? If not, is there a way to upgrade a current 32-bit system to 64-bit without a) having to buy a full version of a new OS and b) reformatting from scratch?

Note: I have a single 4GB RAM card and a vid card with 1GB on-board RAM. Dropping to 2GB of RAM is not an option…not going to intentionally hinder my computer.

Welcome to the club. I too have played most of the other professions extensively and Engineer is by far my favorite. Too much fun!

I recommend grabbing Elixir Gun and experimenting with that. Really boosts survivability. Also, I’ve found that 2 kits is enough and I add a gadget or elixir to my bar. This way I can swap between my pistols, FT, & Elixir Gun, and buff it all with Goggles or Elixir B.

Mines with Elixir Gun’s kiting is fun. Just lead em thru a minefield & sneer.

Traits: 10 in Firearms makes your pistols more effective. 10 in Tools gives you more dodging/swiftness and good kit buffs. My next 10 went into Alchemy. Elixir B at 75% health is just amazing.

The same thing is happening to me. Had to buy a new HD and reinstalled Windows. Ever since then, I am crashing constantly, mostly on load screens, but sometimes mid-game too.

same here. repaired. updated drivers. no fix in site. can’t play more than 30 mins tops before it crashes on me. annoying when it happens on load screens. extremely aggravating when it happens mid-stroyline mission.

I’m having the same issues with crashes at load screens, but it seems to be getting worse and now occasionally crashes mid game. Getting VERY annoying and I’ve sent the error report every time but haven’t gotten a response.

Any other thoughts?

Am I the only one who things a whip is a lame weapon? I mean, when is the last time anyone who wasn’t physically tied up was whipped to death? I mean, you don’t see em much anymore, but warhammers were accepted weapons of war back in the day. Heck, Engis have wrenches and prybars (probably used more often nowadays than we know). About the only cool part of the in-game Nightmare Court whips is the sound effect. But I’m pretty sure none have ever killed me.

Little tip for bow users: Use F2 first, then send in pig and attack. Pick up the item at your feet and use it at range. Apparently Elixir of Heroes doesn’t despawn so you’ll have plenty of time to use that one. Works best with offensive items, since things like regen & stealth are defensive and situational and might despawn before you need em (or you’ve moved away). Also, AFAIK in WvWvW they can be used by enemy players…which is ridiculous.

I’m trying to decide between male Asura (awesome spastic jumping & ninja Yoda animations) and a female Norn for warrior. Never played female Norn (or any Norn past 10). Thoughts on these 2 options??

In comparison, GW2 has got it going on. They stomped out the majority of the huge game-breaking bugs very early on. What’s left are generally minor bugs or class balancing/player wants, the latter of which will never be 100% perfect since you can’t please everyone.

Everyone knows Engineer was the last class that was developed and that it was initially going to be a 3rd heavy armor class but was changed late in the game. As such, there are things that need to be addressed with the class but it’s certainly not broken. Just fine tuning. But I feel that it’s one of the most complex classes to balance, due to its ability to do just about everything (and in a different way than everyone else).

PS OP – don’t get mad when you emphatically use a word wrong, someone points it out, you get snippy and defensive, and then someone else corrects you too. You were wrong. Be a man, admit it, move on.

Completely false. Master work is a quality of a good, has nothing to do with the tier of the mats. Item just has to have green text.

That being said, easiest way I know is to pick up JC and get it to about 50 where you can discover Masterwork gems. Very cheap and easy. You’ve probably got what you need in your bank anyway.

Is there Condition Damage with a combo of Healing Power + Toughness or Vitality gear? That would be a viable option imo because it would lend to survivability and not waste points on something like Precision.

Yea I don’t have much money so I need to keep the costs down as much as possible. Only 400 I have on any toon is Cooking. I don’t have any 80’s yet and those t6 mats are just too pricey to buy. So most of my crafts hover around 250-300.

Most JC recipes are discoveries. Which is good for leveling it because discovery = more XP

Out of curiosity, which are the cheapest & easiest crafts to get 1-400?

I’ve done cooking in a single go once and it was pretty inexpensive (2g + what was in my bank at the time).

Just did 1-300 JC and that was pretty cheap, though I hear 300-400 gets pricey with all the mythril needed.

Artificing was fast & easy but dust prices tend to make buying all the mats on the TP pricey. I’m not rich. Got about 14g total across all toons.

Any others you recommend?

I only recently rolled an Asura Engineer and boy am I happy to be a part of this community. Love the Engineer. Only lvl 31 atm but it’s the most fun I’ve had with any profession. Welcome Missle.

Warrior. Easiest and most straightforward profession.

Ranger. Easy to play PvE due to tanking pet and endless avoidance.

Rangers are viable ranged options if you can learn to love the pet. If it annoys you, don’t play Ranger. The pet is a massive piece of your damage output and utility. But you can certainly deal damage at long range (1500) and kite endlessly.

Engineer is great fun. They’re better now and seem to be getting more love from Anet all the time. If you skim the forums, you’ll see that people feel Engineers are at the bottom of the pile but a look thru the Engi forum shows more people having constructive convos than griping (as opposed to Ranger). Just proof that despite its apparent drawbacks it’s way fun to play. (this is my vote)

Necro is ok, but if you don’t like the Ranger’s pet, you def won’t like the brainless minions. And I found the profession-specific Death Shroud to be very lackluster.

Don’t feel bad OP. The 2nd spawned weapon is for the ele’s allies…he gets his own.

Did the ele say you should have left it for him or for a friend or any specifics? Or just berate you for no reason?

I have an Asura Engineer and at first I figured that made sense. Asura are ingenious crafters and creators. But I realize now that the Engineer gadgets are probably beneath them. They aren’t magical, they aren’t particulary advanced. Charr are the true Engineers, cobbling together archaic war machines, steam powered gadgets, inelegant death throwers. I see the Asura Engineers as those with whimsy. Goofing around Tyria proving that they are the superior race, killing baddies with even the most primitive tech, masters of adaptation. Setting things on fire with a smirk & a demeaning retort. Not having to kill with something they’ve built, but merely with the tools they use to build (wrench thwack!).

Asura Necros…sure, why not? It’s magic. It’s edgy and controversial and those are 2 things it seems Asura eat up.

Sure, it fits the thief well. But it looks terrible on Rangers and even worse on Engis. We need something more techy…we’re Asura after all !!

So I got Supply Crate. You’re right, it’s pretty sweet.

Now…should I save up 30 skill points to get D-Golem next or just use 10 and get Elixir X?

It’s funny, I’ve actually seen (and played with) more Engineers since I rolled one (10 days ago) than I ever noticed before. We must have a magnetic-thermo-gizmo that draws us together.

I won’t deny its faults. Every class has them and Engi is no different. And because of its robust and varied playstyle I think fine tuning it is harder.

Regardless, I just can’t go back to my Ranger (old main) and pew-pew little arrows when my mini-Engi (Asura) totes around a (comparatively) massive flamethrower. Oooh…my Ranger called a flock of birds. My Engi dropped a complete salvo of grenades, bombs, and fire in like…6 seconds.

All about range. Mesmers use greatswords at long range and Rangers use axes at range and Eles use daggers at mid-range. Imo, melee is 130-150, where the weapon is in the player’s hand and is striking the enemy. Casting a short range spell is not a melee attack. You have to be close but if you can’t reach the enemy with the tip of your sword while swinging it, that’s mid-range. Some weapons are both: one with say a hilt bash & a thrown attack. One is melee, the other not.

I agree that Ele’s can throw down more longer-lasting aoe fields. However, you didn’t say “kill stuff in a certain area,” you said “area denial.” Which, to me, means keep people outta your yard. And if your yard has turrets and a poison field, a fire wall, a smoke screen, a half dozen mines blinking, and a dude with a flamethrower and an evil grin…you better believe I ain’t going nowhere near that kid’s yard. I have been effectively denied. It might not kill me, it might. And if I get stuck in a puddle of glue…I’m probably a goner. Either way, I’m gonna look for another area to occupy until I get some more friends.

As for control…yea, I agree we haven’t got the best control. We can push people away and we’ve got a few nets but we’re not as good as other classes. Gotta say that we’re not fitting the bill if Anet says we’re control kings.

I have been playing since BWE2 (99% PvE) and never done a dungeon. I am an altoholic and haven’t hit 80 yet either with any of my numerous toons. Having said that…

Is anyone doing story modes for dungeons anymore? Is it possible to find groups outside of my guild to do these? As a dungeon noob, I’d like to get in with people that know the mechanics of the fights (so I can learn them) but all I ever see in LA-map chat is “LFG x dungeon explorable.”

I’m looking forward to doing these but don’t know where to start. Should I LFG in LA or at the entrance to the dungeons?

Also, I’m curious if there’s anyone else out there that hasn’t done a singel dungeon yet.

Using 6 runes just to boost swiftness duration from focus is hardly optimal, when other professions run around with perma-swiftness or a plain boost without crippling themselves.

Poor argument because other classes don’t just get free speed boosts. They have to trait for it or use a utility slot. I’m sure you use all 3 of your utility slots already. So to equip a +speed signet you’d have to “cripple” yourself by dropping a skill in your build.

Everything comes with a cost.

Why would you delete your lvl 80’s? It’s not like you need space. And quickly deleting what I poured hours into doesn’t tend to alleviate my boredom. I mean I love my Engi too but…I’m not going to kill my other toons. I’m confused.

PS – yes, Engi is the best profession with a unique & fun play style. Kudos to Anet.

thats a form of area denial but its not exactly the correct usage since you are attacking an area over and over regardless of whose in it. If it prevents the enemy from been able to move into that area without taking a large status effect eg slipping or cripple its not really area denial but more of an AOE attack.

Mines are an example of area denial although they aren’t exactly powerful and are easy to avoid.

So if I shower an area with AOE and combo fields and surround it with turrets (and yes, lay a mine or 5)…wouldn’t that be an area you’d stay the kitten out of? I try to avoid gasious clouds or burning walls or being surrounded by enemy turrets. But maybe I’m doing it wrong.

There is only class that might satisfy you.
Roll a mesmer and try to get to level 40 and you will also have a lot of fun.

Mesmer have the largest build diversity in comparison to all profession.

I rolled a mesmer the same time i rolled my engineer. Got him to lvl 10 before I started playing with my engi. Haven’t gone back. He’s cool but engis…have flamethrowers!!

Being called a College I think is misleading because they aren’t places where Asura gather to learn but rather work, endeavour for greatness, collaborate, invent, build, and foster new understanding. To allow brainless norn or human in would be to the detriment of the College, as no progress would occur.

The other races need to learn from the Asura sure…but join the Colleges? You must prove yourself worthy!!

lol yea Ele is one of the most complex professions to play well.

If you aren’t getting enough out of ranged play from the warrior, give ranger a shot. pet lets you stay at range and use bows or axe quite effectively.

I think I’m gonna do this so I can have a set of each of the starter Engi goggles. I had such a hard time choosing at char creation.

We’d need gadgety animations to off-set the “brute force” feel most hammer users have. No offense OP, but I’m not a fan of your ideas for hammer skills. Overcharge seems like it’s a risk to use and pigeon holes you into using just those skills, when we’re the masters of variety.

I’d say…

#1: chain attack similar to OP’s idea
#2: flourish the heavy hammer and accidently drop it on foe’s foot causing cripple for x seconds
#3: short circuit the hammer’s wiring creating a lightening combo field for x seconds and damaging foes aoe (why only ele’s get lightening field?)
#4: magnetic hammer overcharges and drags you rapidly to your target (gap closer)
#5: pneumatic hammer drives itself into ground & aoe knocksdown foes (blast finisher)

I’ve been playing since BWE2. I’ve logged enough hours that my wife has noticed but no so many that I’m rocking multiple exotic sets on my numerous 80’s. But I’ve been playing…

And then I rolled an Engineer.

And I’m having a blast. More fun than any other profession I’ve played, which is a plus, except now I feel I’ve wasted all those hours (albeit fun hours) leveling classes that are not Engi. All the dyes I bought, all the map completion effort, all the holiday items acquired, all the crafting leveled…for nothing because this little Asuran Engi is so much fun I don’t think I’ll ever go back to my Ranger or Guardian or Necro.
