Update on the Economy

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

What we don’t see is the raw number of mats actually being injected into the game as well as their true consumption. All we see is the excess, due to being overpriced, accumulate on the TP and call it supply.

This is true. However, I just recently saw a post on reddit that is sticking with me. Opening and salvaging over 1800 caches netted so many leather/ore/wood/cloth. Yes, I know – small sample, veracity of poster, all the qualifiers. However the results were rather stark. There was about half as much leather as any other material. Out of all of those bags only 4 salvaged to hardened leather. Like I said, take it with a grain of salt but it feels true to me based on my experiences.

I also know this is not quite what you were talking about with regards to supply into the economy and consumption. Maybe it’s more balanced than we realize and the other mats are dropping in excess, but it feels bad. I am always starved for leather and that’s my bottleneck when I want to craft. And it’s not like I am crafting like a madman.

Update on the Economy

I get what JS is saying, but it irks me none the less. Anet has screwed up certain markets with a heavy hand (leather) and is now deciding to let it crash and burn. I think that’s what makes me the most annoyed. I like the little steps like introducing leather/cloth nodes and the unstable scraps. What I don’t like is the major steps like the patches and the varying amounts of material for refined goods. What they did was try to adjust it through major steps rather than the smaller ones and are now surprised that those markets are screwed up. I mean they just tanked the seaweed market in the most recent patch. It’s not like they haven’t been thinking of taking this step so they make one more heavy-hand adjustment before saying ‘hey, we’re stepping back’. It seems so inconsistent to me.

Could they not make a few adjustments for consistency (raw to refined mats) and THEN let the market go wild? Since they didn’t do this, it’s still them telling us that leather is inherently more valuable than ore, not even taking into account that ore is easier to farm on demand than leather. This economy has always frustrated me and I’m not happy with this message.

I’m all in favor of introducing more optional sinks (snowflake sinks were fantastic!) but am salty about the changes in recipes that are short-sighted. I find it hard to believe no one could see that this might be a problem long-term.

TL:DR – they broke it, I don’t buy it.

I can’t give you advice on a good PvP fit for you, but wanted to mention that you can try them all out and figure out what you like. You can jump in PvP from level 1 and compete on a level playing field with the 80s. If you don’t like a class, there is no downside to re-rolling. Maybe start with a thief or warrior and see which other professions seem to have an interesting playstyle after seeing what they can do in-game.

metabattle.com has a list of pvp builds for all professions. It’s a good place to start to learn how to play your character or to see what you will likely be facing. (although most of the builds will probably require HoT, there are probably some that use the core professions.)

Halloween: Bring back the old Lion's Arch!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Shaaba.5672

Shaaba.5672

The more I am thinking about this, the more disappointed I am in the changes. Like I said, the atmosphere is completely different. I don’t want a child’s Halloween party, I want to go to the haunted house. I want carved pumpkins on bales of hay with the feel of autumn in the air. Carts full of candy corn don’t cut it.

Even if they would somehow transform the look and feel of the plaza for Halloween only – I’m not talking radical changes – just an illusion spell that shifts the color away from sea-blue to darker tones. Something that makes the pretty filigree decorations more earthy and fitting for the season. Cover it with spiders and cobwebs or make the edging wood instead of flowing, graceful metal. The way the plaza is right now just does not mesh with the old Halloween aesthetic and I missed it a lot last year. I don’t want to have to jump in the maze to clear my head of the sanitized LA Halloween and get my fix of the good stuff.

I completely agree with this. I loved the character of old LA.

Mainly, I was very disappointed in how the Halloween decorations looked in the new plaza. It just doesn’t fit with the clean, sea theme. I loved loved LOVED the spooky vibe the whole place used to have. Last year just look sanitized. It didn’t have near the atmosphere it used to. So completely disappointed.

Charr and Asura female precursor armor

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Shaaba.5672

Shaaba.5672

I vote to change it. It looks out of place and doesn’t fit their bodies. If the only choice is male v female, then change it. My ideal would be to use the female armor, but adjust it. I like having a distinct feminine look for my asura and charr that fits their aesthetic.

Personally, I am yet again disappointed by you, Anet. I know you’re trying hard to fix what wasn’t working in HoT and refocusing your resources, but this is legendary armor. The trust and good will with your community is fragile and you’ve been making large strides towards fixing it, but this is yet another half-kitten idea and implementation. I know it’s only a precursor and not the final product. What I would expect for the final form is that each race gets something similar, but fitted to them. No breast plates on Asura, no tail-clipping for Charr. You’ve shown you can do it with the wedding outfits, but since this is an in-game reward it’s not given the same care and attention that gem store items are. That’s the most upsetting part about this.

What do you think of Lion's Arch?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Shaaba.5672

Shaaba.5672

New LA doesn’t have the charm and personality of old LA. What I do like about LA now is the Mediterranean feel of the housing – I really do love that new aspect of the city. The memorial is really lovely. What I don’t like is pretty much anything in the grand plaza area, or the sea themed buildings. The mosaics and gold fish as decorative elements I actually like, but that’s where the sea theme should have stopped. It feels over designed.

I really hate the new festival plaza – it doesn’t fit with the rest of the city and there are no lions anywhere. I was disappointed by the Halloween decorations because they looked sanitized. Carts and carts of candy corn everywhere, but they took out the more rustic and creepier decorations because it didn’t fit their new aesthetic. So that’s the real crime for me – it didn’t feel Halloweeny enough and Halloween is my favorite holiday. I got the sads when I remembered how awesome old LA looked all dressed up for the season.

We don’t have all the information and right now Dragon’s Watch seems the most appropriate (IMO), but we don’t know how the others might fit. Maybe a small explanation for each would be nice. If this were a discussion I was having with friends on how to name our guild, we’d throw out a few names and a reason, not just random names.

It reminds me a little of the polls for the Lion’s Arch rebuild. I chose Lion’s Court without realizing that no actual lions would be represented. Or the fact that we rejected Theo Ashford Memorial something or other, but they were really determined to use it and just named the bridge the Theo Ashford bridge. These polls seem nice, but really, they just end up feeling disappointing to me.

(haha, poster above me was thinking pretty much the same thing!)

Put in a reward chest where you can choose some of the junkier items. Tomes or trans charge or repair canister – whatever. That way you can at least feel a little good about choosing the least unwelcome option, and people that need tomes can still get tomes. Or hey, they like tickets. Another ticket, this time for the very very common items. 1 ticket gets you a tome, but maybe you can save them and get something a little better for more tickets. Kind of like the vanity pet tickets work now. I mean, I kind of hate having yet another system like this, but at the same time, I’d get to choose what the heck I want and think is useful. Or if nothing appeals, I save up for a big ticket item. (not like a contract or node, but maybe mail carrier, dye kit, pet ticket – stuff like that)

Comparing it to my in game guild, I didn’t start it, but I have a big presence there and have brought in friends of my own. DPS meter in game would be a "God Send"

I would love to see a DPS meter that perhaps is only available in the PvP lobby or a guild training ground. It can be a valuable tool when trying to test out builds or learn rotations, etc.

I also agree that it tends to be a toxic thing and I don’t want to see that in GW2. If it can be implemented in a way it can only be used in ‘safe’ zones instead of ‘live’ raids, etc. I would be happy. Be even happier if all the things mentioned above could be tracked too – boons, healing, etc.

I Hate Dragon Ball (and you can too)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Shaaba.5672

Shaaba.5672

I don’t hate Dragonball, but I wish it were implemented better. I really like the layout of the map. It’s small enough to find fights and keep on your toes, but still has some good shortcuts and fakeouts so you can elude people if you’re good at the map travel. I’m not a PvPer, but I really like this game.

The problem is just what the OP said – when it snowballs, it gets real painful real quick. Whatever the reasons are for it snowballing (keeping skills, no penalty for leaving) no one denies that it does and there is no catch up mechanism.

It does also feel random because I can be top scorer by a wide margin in one game, and not be able to do anything the next. I take a look at the scoreboards and notice this for other players as well. Sure, some names are always at the top and you can tell who the really good players are, but mostly it feels random and you just hope you get lucky. That’s not necessarily bad, but adds a bit to the frustration. I don’t even bother with the 5 win daily – I’m just there for the participation, and if I’m still having fun after two games, I stick around til I’m not.

They both have invisible bags, I keep a space open just because of how the switch works now so I am not sure why I am getting different results?

We finally got to the point in game where if I swapped out my two one-handed weapons for a two-hander (out of combat) the two one-handers would be stored in the bag side by side if there was room. January 26th Update: Your feedback

Shaaba.5672

Gonna run down a few things so you know how I consume this game.

Love gliding in Tyria. Love the objects being shown without holding down control. Love, love the new squad markers. This feels like something that should have been included since the squad’s introduction. And finally! We can change fractal levels in the lobby. Again, something that feels like it should have been introduced with the single fractal change.

Haven’t tried Shatterer yet, but I hear good things. I only dip my toe into WvW on occasion, so I can’t tell what’s been changed or if it’s good. I don’t PvP, so profession balance is not something I keep a close tab on. Chrono still seems ok for open world PvP but I did notice the nerf. Scribing costs – meh, I don’t scribe because of the massive sink it was at launch and now I just don’t have any interest. Brew of the month is something to do but not something I’m excited about. Backpack reward is unappealing and actually I’m hoping that there is a hidden reward somewhere along the line that makes me not regret spending the 10 gold.

The Lunar New Year was underwhelming last year, is underwhelming this year. It was a filler event last year because of the content drought and this year it really shows it. Backpack is creepy, which is disappointing because … monkey! Dragonball is fun sometimes, but miserable when you’re getting steamrolled and no incentive to stick around which makes it more miserable for your teammates. I still play it, but only for the 2 participation daily, I don’t stress about wins because 5 for a daily? Not worth it to me. Disappointed pvp activities are still so – not broken, but not implemented well.

Things I’m not happy about is the fact that you can’t buy 5 encryption keys at once anymore in the fractal lobby. We absolutely don’t need more clicking in this game, so I don’t understand why this was taken out at all. I mean at all.

Overall this was a huge patch, I know, but for me it comes down to a handful of really nice QoL changes (2 surprises, 2 I feel should have been in earlier) and a lot of stuff that doesn’t effect me, or leaves me feeling slightly disappointed.

I don’t think HoT failed, nor is it a rousing success. My main problem is that they put all their eggs in one basket. All the maps follow a similar structure. That’s great if you love it, not great if you don’t. I would have liked to see more of a mixture of meta/non-meta maps. We may get some in the future (please, please) so I’m not writing off HoT just yet. My reception is best described as luke-warm with a hint of optimism.

Scribing profession is unreasonable

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Shaaba.5672

Shaaba.5672

Honest question – what do you see is the value of scribing? What are you most excited to unlock and what do you use from it right now?

Right now, deco.

In the future, wvw tactics and deco.

Decorations are subjective, so I get that people value them. Personally, I don’t because I don’t get to place them as a non-scribe.

WvW items are overpriced and you can get much of the same from guild commendations. The cost of guild siege is not worth the difference in cost of getting them other places. The tactics are too expensive to use, honestly. Maybe in a top-tier server, the WvW items might be worth it, but we are near the bottom and we have fun and do it regularly, but the fights don’t mean much and it’s not worth investing in.

So for people who are not into competitive WvW, and people who don’t get to do decorating, there is little value in the profession at all. I know you could say that for someone who only plays Warrior, the profession artificing doesn’t offer anything of value, but I think it’s different. This was hyped up as a profession that you can do to help out your guild! But it is in a very narrow way that won’t have value to a large swath of people and not what I expected. Maybe that’s on me for having certain expectations, but it would not be the first time my expectations and Anet’s communication has clashed.

Actually, I think if Anet had been more clear about how the profession was actually going to play out, we might not have so many people upset over it. And I’m not upset, just very, very disappointed and, sadly, that doesn’t surprise me at this point.

But that’s hardly any different than telling your guildies “if you guys want me to make stuff, do the node farms once a day or even week”.

For our guild, this is kind of the crux of the issue. We don’t necessarily want scribed stuff because the end product is not worth it, to us. That’s the disappointing part. It seems fairly useless for something that a lot of us were exited about before launch. We’re still hoping that it will be worth it at some point in the future, but right now it doesn’t seem to add any real value for us.

If you see it as a hardcore crafting profession and like it, that’s great. They made someone happy with it, but I feel that for every one person happy with it, there are 10 that are very unhappy.

Honest question – what do you see is the value of scribing? What are you most excited to unlock and what do you use from it right now?

Expect to put in 1-2 hrs every day harvesting nodes as a scribe.

And that sounds reasonable to you? I agree that it should be an accomplishment, but it shouldn’t be a job. I’d much rather be able to have all my guildies donate mats to a guild vault specifically for scribing. I mean, we kind of do that already as we funnel mats to one person, but even then he is pouring hundreds of gold and hours into it and doesn’t feel it’s worth it. We are a big guild that is near capacity of active players and while we may not all be hardcore, we are friendly and helpful and a large percentage regularly donate spare mats. That doesn’t sound like a reasonable system to me.

Scribing is a huge disappointment for many reasons I won’t go into because it’s all been said before. I’ve accepted that it isn’t something I will personally be leveling and I’m ok with that now, but very reluctantly.

What I still can’t accept is the cost of the things you get to make once you do go through the painful process of leveling it. Aesthetics like furniture, chairs etc I am not talking about. That’s not a game mechanic. The scribe was advertised as a profession that could make things to help your guild, specifically thinking about WvW. Our guild leader (and scribe) whenever asked about when can you make …? Always replies ‘not worth it’.

Our guild is full of a lot of helpful people and many of us were disappointed that we couldn’t contribute and show our appreciation to the guild by blinging it out on our own dime. But to have even our dedicated scribe be completely unenthusiastic about it is more than disappointing.

To me, scribing is this thing that exists, but I don’t give a second thought to because it doesn’t affect me in any way, shape or form. Well, except for the once a week or so that I clean out my bank to send scribing mats to our leader. I wish it hadn’t been implemented. The guild halls are great – scribing isn’t.

Like the above poster said – right now, I’m not convinced. I do expect that the updates that will come should make it worth it in time. If you’re patient and don’t mind missing out on what the features have to offer RIGHT NOW then I think you could wait and see if the price comes down closer to what you estimate it to be worth.

I am the type of player who loves exploring and enjoying the beauty of the maps, stumbling on unexpected nooks and crannies. The new maps are gorgeous and very nice for this, but I don’t have time to enjoy them. I am always afraid that if I just stay and try to take it in, I will be ambushed by something nasty. It’s not the difficulty factor, it’s just not relaxing. I get that they were designed that way and I did like Silverwastes and Dry Top pre-expansion, but not all the time. It was easy to dip in and out of those maps and metas when I felt like it. Now, to see any of the new maps I have to constantly be on my toes and if I want to do the meta I have to hope I am in a good map or am in at the right time. Fine for a few maps, not good (for me) for a whole expansion. I tend to do my own thing in game and don’t like to schedule things – even the world bosses seem too restrictive. I do actually do a lot of group content and like metas where you need many people working together, but I don’t like needing it.

Masteries are a cool concept, but I think the payouts are ultimately disappointing. It’s just time gating and I don’t feel like I got anything cool (except gliding – that one was well done!) It’s just, finally, now the frog will talk to me and sell me some relatively unexciting stuff, or I can wade into poison to get a mastery point. Tyria Pact mastery is actually nice too – auto loot and city swiftness are nice bonuses I appreciate often.

The elite specs are fun. The ones I play are Chrono and Reaper, but they aren’t must-haves for me. Mileage may vary on this feature. It’s nice to have options, but again, it’s not as exciting or game-changing as I’d hoped it would be. That might be just my expectations though.

I am not a mini person, but I equipped this one just because I was so excited to get something – anything – from this stupid dragon. I’m totally behind a token system for this guy. I don’t need many, just something that feels like it’s worth my time. I do enjoy the fight for it’s own sake, but after many runs, the novelty wears off and the main reason to go back is the hope of good loot. There never is and I might as well have been killing harpies because I can kill a heck of a lot more harpies in the time it takes to kill Teq once.

I took my time and didn’t rush into the expansion, so I didn’t see any other map besides VB and a little AB in the first few weeks of the release. I’ve been into DS a few times now, spent several hours on it in chunks of maybe 30 – 60 minutes. I still have zero idea how that map works and what the meta involves or anything. Never have seen a single event.

Yes, I know youtube is a resource, but my point is, as a player, the game does a poor job of informing me what to do or point me in a productive direction or give me incentive to even come back other than heavy-handed ones like achievements, collections, specific materials, etc. It doesn’t entice me back because that map is fun. Definitely not that.

Do you regret pre-purchasing HoT?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Shaaba.5672

Shaaba.5672

I do regret pre-purchasing. The only value to that is in being able to play the new content RIGHT NOW when it releases. In the future, I will probably wait until the new expansion is out, see how it looks and wait for it to go on sale if I like what I see. I am mildly disappointed with HoT – so many things I like weighed against a lot of things I really don’t that I can’t imagine I’ll be fooled by the hype train again.

I know that we haven’t seen the full value of HoT yet – it will expand as the story continues, but I didn’t need to pre-purchase the game to experience content that won’t be released for several months.

Somewhere in the warzone of the jungle, I was hoping to find a map that wasn’t so hectic and I could just explore and take in the beauty without worrying overly much about Mordrem snipers. In the core game they have Cursed Shore (based on chained meta events) and they have Frostgorge, which … isn’t so much. I just wanted a jungle version of Frostgorge in there somewhere.

My recommendations from another thread are to split the scribe levels. Have a guild level and a player level. You need to meet the level requirement on both to craft a recipe. The guild level lowers much slower but gains xp every time ANY player uses the scribing station. The player gains XP much faster but because of the guild level, can’t out run/out pace his guild.

I was writing stuff out and realized this is the idea I really like. (quoted from Odysssey above) It solves many problems. Maybe we need to also sink in lots of mats into leveling up a scribe level, just like we do for leveling up areas of the guild proper, since that seems to be one of Anet’s goals here. That’s fine – just let personal scribe levels be on par with every other crafting profession.

I honestly wouldn’t mind the one weapon if each legend was viable underwater.

When I’m in the mood, it’s fantastic, but it is relentless.

This sums it up very well and that’s my biggest disappointment. I would love to get the chance to really take in the beauty (because the maps are completely gorgeous, no question) but I feel that I can’t. It’s all guarded by that pack of rabid dogs running loose at the Louvre. I get a few seconds break to breathe and take it in before worrying about the next attack.

I am hoping – really, really hoping – that we can get some new maps in the upcoming living story that are as visually stunning, but more laid back. Compare Silver Wastes or Orr to Frostgorge – all are end game zones, but have a different feel and pace. It’s nice to have choices.

My Wintersday wish is for more bags in my bags.

I mean, no … that’s not what I want at all. Wintersday was when I hit critical mass with the clicking and clicking and clicking … and clicking … and … make it STOP!

That is my Wintersday wish. Make it stop.

Personally I’d love having back pieces and glider separate, then a discount bundle if you buy them together. For example, I would love the white wings as a glider, but would never wear them as a backpiece, so haven’t pulled that trigger.

Claimed mastery points

Is there something I’m missing that lets you know if you’ve already claimed a mastery point? I was wandering through VB and saw a mastery above me on a tree limb. I didn’t remember if I’d already been there, so I made my way up and discovered I’d already communed with it. Is there something that distinguishes an unclaimed one from a claimed one? Maybe it would be nice if a claimed mastery showed up on the map – not beforehand, I like the discovery, but after you claim it.

Also kinda related but not, really – does the map seem really cluttered to anyone else? I understand the arrows saying above and below are really helpful and I like them, but now there’s just so much info on my map I find it hard to zone into what’s important. Maybe this just takes getting used to, but I don’t like the color of the arrows because I never know if it’s a plant harvest node or an arrow until I zoom the map a little.
