Why is it any attempts to suggest areas of improvements to a profession are met with a portion of the community suggesting the poster try another profession? I’ve tried them all. They all have issues.

Main issue with this is your looking at the cd and not what the skill’s actually do. Guardian skill’s tend to be fairly powerful compared to other classes from my own experience and as such do deserve a longer timer.

I dont feel this is a screw up. You want to use symbols roll with a weapon like the mace the gs already outdamages most of the weapons we have without the extra from the symbol.

You are missing something very key here… In everything you said you are missing a vital point.

We are moving towards retaliation being more of a counter to taking many hits rather than a general boon to keep up all the time. We also wanted to improve the combo finisher of the guardian, so we reorganized guardian greatsword skills to the following…

#1The entire reason for the nerf is that they don’t want retaliation up all the time.
#2The changes they made do nothing to prevent 100% Retaliation up-time because the key skills needed to get 100% retaliation up-time were untouched.
#3The changes they made did negatively effect, utility and damage output on the great sword.
#4There was no desire (at least they didn’t express any) or need to nerf great sword damage or utility.
#5The Nerf had nothing to do with symbols and their ability to combo retaliation and had no effect on any symbol build except great sword.

It doesn’t mean that suddenly you cannot play with a great sword anymore. I’m still using one because my build revolves around it but I have definitely taken a hit to damage and survivability. That doesn’t mean I’m suddenly dying all over the place. It just means we deal less damage, have less condition removal, and potentially less healing thanks to the change. This is a fact. It’s annoying to see other professions with the same weapon outpace us even more because of a nerf to something that was not needed, and completely ineffective in nerfing what it was supposed to in the first place. That my friend is where there is a screw up.

If they came out and said. “Great sword guardians were dealing 30% more damage than we intended and were grossly outpacing other classes. there fore we increased the cooldown of Symbol of Wrath” That would have been completely different, and at least made sense.

You seem to not realize that the gs symbol was the single easiest goto for group retaliation without giving up any damage. Yes you can still get it from other area’s but you have to give up other things to do so. But with the gs without any of the retaliation buffs i was able to keep retaliation up nearly all the time before hand while also doing some really nice damage. Now if you want to do simular you have to run with the mace while using one trait build in paticular. You completely ignore that fact. We are not bad off with the great sword. Its still a very viable weapon. You all just want to cry because they did something that you dont agree with. Im done here. You clearly are just going to cry about it nomatter what and overlook anything that you dont want to see.

SiNoS.2147

The thing people mistake with healing is they want to compair to healer. We are not healers. We are support. While we do regen people’s hp its not major healing. The main point is if someone is actually doing there job our support will help them out while there own heals are on cool down by helping regen there hp to safe levels so if they make a mistake they are not dead. We wont save them from big mistakes or a ton of minor ones but a mistake here or there we will negate. Which is the point. We dont cure stup1d. We just help off set those moments when you get caught with your pants down so to say.

I can’t tell if this is a serious topic or not. As far as I’m concerned Guardian is the most OP class in the game and I’m pretty hard pressed to find a reason NOT to just take 5 guardians into every dungeon.

Easiest dungeon run i’ve ever had was 5 guardian’s all in support/hybrid spec’s.

by your own logic all symbols should have been nerfed. They were not. and As has been pointed out numerous times you can still get great AOE, and permanent retaliation. In other words the Great sword nerf did nothing at all to reduce the amount of retaliation in PvP or PvE. All it did was nerf the damage of the great sword, its combos, and its synergies with traits.

Actually it makes sense only the gs symbol was touched. Its the only one of our weapons with symbol skills that can produce retaliation without weapon swapping. Thats why i feel the symbol was increased in time.

I also like how you and others discount symbol of wrath as a DPS skill or even a “main go to AOE” It makes me wonder if you even used a great sword.

I actually use the GS as my main. So they increased it. Truefully i still havent died once because of this “Nerf” as you all say due to the symbol being doubled in time. Thats including me being jumped by 3 vertern’s and there adds just earlier today. When i realized what happened i dropped symbol nailed Leap of Faith hit then with Binding Blade then swapped over to my staff to top myself up and charge up might then back over to sword after dropping staff symbol into another Leap following up with a WW. After a few chains of this i came out of the fight with all mobs dead at my feet never dropping below 50%. So in the end i really dont see much difference. So i cant purge conditions as much. In the end the Leap being on a shorter cooldown does me personally more good given its an aoe blind than symbol ever has. I look at the total picture instead of focusing on one skill thats still not in bad condition.

Symbol of wrath was great DPS and if it wasn’t apart of your main rotation you were not living up to the full great sword potential. Was Guardian great sword the best damage in the game? No but great sword deals less damage now and it hurts us that it does. There isn’t even an argument to that, it does deal less damage. having a 5 second shorter blind doesn’t increase your damage, the funny part is that it does however increase Retaliation up time because its a leap finisher (go figure that one). But on top of that great sword lost a lot of support and damage potential in regards to 5 traits.

Writ of Exaltation
Writ of Persistence
Writ of the Merciful
Symbolic Exposure
Symbolic Power

None of which have anything to do with Retaliation at all. And many of which great sword specs did use.

Ok so symbols as we all know are a combo field: Light so lets check something here Writ of Persistence increases how long this combo field stays on the field while Writ of Exaltation makes it larger making it easier for people to use this combo field. This combo field is the only one that gives retaliation. As for the Leap Finisher it only works with the field on the ground. Granted running staff or mace both support/defensive weapons you can use it basically on cooldown. But you have to give up damage type weapons to do it meaning you have to focus on your GS being your only form of damage.

So to recap Great sword lost Damage, combo ability, and support. But gained more up time for permanent (mobile) Retaliation builds. in a patch change that was supposed to reduce retaliation up time? All the while

Vengeful
Healer’s Retribution
Retaliatory Subconscious
Virtue of Retribution
Wrathful Spirit
Save Yourselves
Stand Your Ground
Signet of Judgment (did lose 25% up time on retaliation but now fires off faster)

These skills are untouched? Because clearly Symbol of wrath was the sole problem with keeping retaliation up. And of course never mind the Symbol of Protection + mighty blow combo from Hammer.

Ill just point out Signet of Judgment was touched :P. Ok jokes aside symbol of wrath on the gs gave a fast recast symbol on a non defensive weapon that let you swap to other weapons after you performed the combo. Heck i know people who carried the gs strictly for the symbol because of the gs’s damage output while they waited to for the swap weapons timer so they could drop the symbol then go right over to the hammer to combo every 10 seconds for retaliation. So yes the symbol on the gs was a major problem because it gave you a goto symbol that dident really hurt dps.

I love what ANet has done with this game. but giving credit where credit is due also means pointing out the screw ups. And they screwed up big time this change doesn’t address the permanent retaliation builds at all! not even a little!

I dont feel this is a screw up. You want to use symbols roll with a weapon like the mace the gs already outdamages most of the weapons we have without the extra from the symbol.

There is no immortal/unkillable build or setup… That being said if you want to try to survive as long as possible 15k hp minimum with max toughness. If you dont care about healing power stack some power but make sure your 30-40% crit before your buffs. Other than that really its about prefrence. Theres lots of different ways to make yourself harder to kill. But those stats i said will be a basis to build around.

There are no damage types in Guild Wars 2. Nor does the fiery dragon sword have any stat difference to the sword before you apply the skin. All there is is a burning graphic it applies that does no extra damage.

The Fiery Dragon Sword does infact change the damage type to fire.

All you complaining about the symbol need to realize the symbol’s are one of the fastest ways to get AREA Retaliation. So how do you counter that? You increase the cast time. So its 20 seconds now. Its still far from useless. Our main go to AoE skill on it is still on the same timer, and our gap closer/blind skill is on a faster recast. So over all its in my eyes an improvement.

Edit: Also the staff symbol is on a 15 second timer. So not a major difference given the swords symbol give retaliation which they dont want us to have huge ammounts of it. Ill give you the mace symbol is on a 8 second timer but then again its the healing skill of the mace. So i can see why i is shorter on the defensive weapon.

Never played wow enough to remark on that. But i will say. We are not bad off. The changes havent altered my style at all. So it took an hour or so to get use to the skill changes. Big deal. Over all i actually perfer the changes. Having gap closer on a shorter cooldown is so nice, and our goto aoe skill still is on the same timer. So not like they made us useless. Infact far from it. As for the retaliation changes. So you cant run it 100% of the time. You really never should have been able to in the first time. Kinda made it a little overpowered in my eyes.

Frankittenhe gs wasent borked with this change. So we cant combo as often. To be honest the gs combo was a bit OP. Instead they gave us the gap closer sooner. I would rather be able to gap close faster. As for total output. Its about the same. I was a gs user long before the change and still am long after. Frankly i see 0 difference once i got use to the symbol being at 4 instead of 2.

Thanks,
that is what i wwas thinking but how you get there. That part of the map is closed to me/blurred out. How i get there? There are other regions on the map that i was trying to get to with no info on any pathways. Wiki has some information on which zone is connected to which one but you have to find needle in the hay sack to find the cave or gate etc that takes you there. So how you get to those dongeons on the map?
More precisely how you get to the one in Ascalon?

Use the gate system till you find something close. In general most of the dungeons at lower levels are 1 area away from a starter city. Also if your in your 60’s and cant find the area’s these are in might want to take a day or two and just explore in the general direction the dungeon’s are in. So far none of them are hard to get to. Only one thats tricky i have found is arah but we wont touch on that one at this time.

Learn to LOS like a boss.

lol

I don’t go anywhere alone. Guards are designed to run with a pack. If you’re trying to run lone wolf you rolled the wrong class.

I care for myself , i play alone mostly.

Do i support other … sometimes, like in dungeons , only time i actually need a party aside from farming. Im always impressed people make builds that care for others not in your party.

Fact is guard can hold his own, if you cant, you are the one who need to take a better look at the class you are playing.

I mostly solo too but I do put on “help others” skills as I am running to events like the dragon and actively try to shield and protect others. The way I see it, if the random stranger next to me survives that much longer because I shouted “hold the line” or took conditions off of them with “save yourself” – well, the event gets done sooner! It doesn’t take long and can make a difference.

Guardians can hold their own and do not have to run with a pack but I think a good guardian should adapt, especially since it can be done quickly, when they find themselves in a pack.

But then again, I was a healer in a the old trinity. So maybe its just the healer in me ^.^

I normally run a build that is a mix in PvE. Its highly solo capable but at the same time i am fully able to support those around me at any given time. Then again im use to paladin type characters in my other games, not WoW just to get ride of that thought, i’ve played. So being able to kick over and do other roles has become second nature to me. Always felt closer to a healer/support specialist in my mindset than other warrior want-to-be paladin players due to all that paladin’s can normally do.

Well just to point out if you open your map you will notice the dungeon icon in area’s. This icon is its location. As for getting into the dungeons there no talking to anyone. Just form a party and go into it. You only have to be in the area to zone in.

Edit: One person does have to be at the dungeon location though. Once they go in any party member in the area is given the option to zone in reguardless of where they are in that same area.

She’ll be self-conscious in anything that isn’t patched and worn out as it is. I suppose if they let you choose to buy it with or without the effect, that’d be grand.

Eh the ac armor is ghost phased/imbued armor that was enchanted somehow during the searing, given it was two massive magical powers going off at that time, is how i kinda view it not to mention its nice to be a walking nightlight at night. Nothing better than being in a dark area and whipping out that sword to light the way with those flames. Although on a down side. You get spammed with tell’s about it making it hard to be a “walking” nightlight.

They may or may not be level 2 but thats is kinda a silly remark since some of the best PvP players i have seen have never touched the PvE side. All i know is that they have full sets of crafted PvP armor which means they spend some time in PvP. Few can actually handle a guardian in a SPvP fight if the guardian plays correctly and is geared correctly. I’ve been on teams when i go as my thief that were completely devestated by guardians. The rest of there team just hung back and watched as a couple of guard’s proceded to floorstomp everyone who got within range for there pull’s. So your insults arnt needed.

While i agree we are powerful when with the group. From my experience were also one of the few classes that can roll solo without much fear. Only time i have to really watch my self when i rolling around capping points is when i notice the whole other party coming my way. 2-3 and i normally faceroll them without really a second glance. EDIT: Ok so just checked it out. It for sure isent craftable. So its a random drop from mobs or from the forge. Im leaning to the forge since i’ve had a level 80 for a while and have yet to ever have a ring drop from a mob. Maybe bad luck but forge would be my guess.

One more thing: you took away the surprise/thrill factor when you removed the chance-to-drop items. It’s too predictable, knowing what and when you’ll get with the token system. A proposition: leave the token system as it is, but add chance-to-drop items (LOW chance) which are better than those you can obtain with tokens. That will be the incentive to run the dungeons over and over again, and people will always be on their toes, hoping they’ll get the drop they need.

I think they didn’t want to create another lottery-system. Sure, it gives incentive to repeat the content but in the end it doesn’t change anything.

Not to mention in order to do this they would have to drop dungeon gear from exotic to rare or something between the two as exotic is the best gear in the game.

Someone hits us with blind for example knowing were getting ready to use some hard hitting skill. Bam its just gone and they get facerolled. Where as they hit us with blind. Now if that happened to hit the 0 count its removed if not we miss with our big attack. Much fairer in my eyes.

For the people that use +boons duration for hammer, do you think you need that extra boon duration to keep it permanent? With just one single trait Writ of Persistence (symbol lasts longer), you’ll already be able to maintain permanent protection in a Hammer chain #1 > #2 Mighty Blow then repeating #1 twice > #2.

I think they like me go with +boon duration so that they can switch to do other things. Sure you may loose it at some point but being able to switch over to do something else while knowing you still have time due to boon duration increase kinda eases your mind.

You clearly dident read what i posted. To simplify it for you since you dont seem to understand.

The point of my post came down to this. They said that the Dungeons would be on a whole different level than the rest of the game. They made it a point to say that this content unlike the rest of the game required a lot more understanding of the game and its workings, and skill to use them than the as you referred to it “carebear” content thats found in the rest of the game. In final people overlooking this and complaining is not the fault of the dev’s but the people and only with them.

Your clearly the one who’s being non-constructive as i only responded to you in the exact same way you have reacted to others. If you want to set down and have a constructive debate about it i’m more than willing to treat you as an adult. Till then ill treat you as a kid.

Oh, gee golly, really?

You would be willing to treat me like and adult if only I post in utter agreement to you and nothing against your point of view or opinion.

Wow! I am so sorry, that I ever left a constuctive post (that wasn’t even directed at you to begin with) that contained my view and opinion of how it was not a simple matter of the players being “dead weight” and it being in part the fault of the developers for making such a CAREBEAR game with no true progression to help prepare all players toward the harder content such as dungeons.

CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME?

Now that part of this post was non-constuctive I agree, but then again it wasn’t meant to be either.

In reality the “treat you as a kid” comment is not only childish in and of itself, but it is also no different than any other intimidation technique that others on a forum use when they cannot handle someone having a view or opinion that differs from them.

Look you don’t like my view, but that does not make it non-constructive.

No your attitude is what makes it non-constructive. I never said you had to agree with me. I told you if you could quite acting like a child we could have a honest discussion on the matter. But instead all you have done is attack anyone and everyone who has posted something you dont agree with. Your condescending tone you come across as make you very hateful. To be frank it makes it impossible to take you serious. Treat the other players with the respect the deserve and maybe you would actually be treated like an adult. Its not that i cant handle snot nose brats. Its more like i would rather try to give them the chance to show there more than that. You so far are not.

As a new’ish Guardian, I always enjoy reading these kind of threads, but I’ve noticed that players’ builds are rarely mentioned, which leads me to kind of a fundametal question: Do you guys gear to compensate for weaknesses in you trait selection, or do you go for flat out stacking?

I’ve been trying to go for kind of a balanced approach. 30 in both valor and honor seems pretty defensive (but I like the traits), but I was considering going bereserker’s or something to make up for the lack of offensive firepower on my armor, and maybe some healing on accessories to make some of the passive heals (direct too I suppose) at least somewhat effective.

Does this work? Or am I kittening myself by spreading stuff around too much?

Eh im geared power/toughness/vitality armor and weapon’s with cleric jewelery. Heres my build so you can get an idea.

meh, we don’t need to convince one player to enjoy the game. if he doesn’t enjoy playing a video game, he doesn’t enjoy it. why do i feel this way? i like going back and just exploring, doing stuff i didn’t do on my way to lvl 80 the first time, ie jumping puzzles, dynamic events. and when i get tired of something i ask my friends what they’re doing and enjoy participating in their experience even if i’ve done it before blah blah we could all go on describing how to enjoy a game but if your not interested in having fun why bother with a disgruntled ungrateful brat. /chuckle

You are the reason this game will die soon.
Nuff said I’m out, have fun fan boys, there is clear issues with the game but if all anyone is going to do is defend a sub-par title then there is no point, the game will die.

Same thing was said of GW1. It was the 2nd largest game of the time. We survived just fine without your type. We will do so again. I bid you good bye. /show’s you the door.

Guild Wars 1 may have been big in the beginning, but it’s population dwindled slowly. Guild Wars 2 was big in the beginning, and most of the population is already gone. You can’t say that a game will be fine just because of the game that came before it. The only example I need is D3.

Its population was actually fairly steady around a mill to mill and a half or so till the last 6 months to a year but kinda expected when nothings really launching for it. As for this games pop. MoP just launched. So ofcourse your going to see a dip. The numbers for GW2 are still fairly decent would be my guess.

The population of GW1 went back up in the last few months of the game due to people trying to get enough HoM points for GW2. Most people weren’t actually playing the game with others, just going about their own business. And yes, MoP may have just launched, but that doesn’t explain the massive dip in population that has been seen in the last week or two.

Two parts i would say. One being MoP. Second being most are figuring out that you dont have to play it 24/7 to be of use to anyone. So there actually spreading out there play times now and enjoying the game instead of grinding. I know all my friends are. I see them on and off now. Theres takeing it slow and enjoying content since i told them to slow down because 80 is just like 30 and might as well enjoy it on the way up. No reason to bash your head against the keyboard grinding to hit 80. It will be there and waiting for them.

I would argue melee is viable it does damage , it just has a larger but not so much large chance to get you killed. Now support.. well support builds are usless in this game thats what you should be focusing on.

Support useless? Support build’s are the key to easy groups. More than likely your running with support types and never realizing it. Good support types wont look like traditional heal bots. They will be the people in the front leading the group. Look at who your most active members are and most likely there doing support.

meh, we don’t need to convince one player to enjoy the game. if he doesn’t enjoy playing a video game, he doesn’t enjoy it. why do i feel this way? i like going back and just exploring, doing stuff i didn’t do on my way to lvl 80 the first time, ie jumping puzzles, dynamic events. and when i get tired of something i ask my friends what they’re doing and enjoy participating in their experience even if i’ve done it before blah blah we could all go on describing how to enjoy a game but if your not interested in having fun why bother with a disgruntled ungrateful brat.

Repost from the top but here it is in anets words:

“In the past, we’ve talked about how in Guild Wars 2 we designed the game to avoid a common problem in many MMOs: grinding through chunks of boring, repetitive content to get to the occasional pockets of fun. With Guild Wars 2, we wanted the entire gameplay experience to be something that players enjoyed, regardless of how much time they could dedicate.” From guildwars2.com

You are just twisting what they said to fit your opinion or you simply didn’t understand what they meant.

They aren’t saying there is no grind at all. They are saying to access the fun content, there is no grind. It’s a direct reference to the WoW type of gear grind needed to access the harder dungeons/raids. And indeed, there is no need to grind anything to access any playable content in GW2.

I think you dont understand what YOU are saying…

If what u said is what they ment, then in that case you have access to fun content in any mmo w/o grinding. U can accsess any dungeon in wow or any other game w/o grind, its just u wont be able to do kitten there.

Stop being funboy and accept the facts plz.

My statement stands. You just said the same thing in a different way. In GW2, you can access AND do the content without trouble. In WoW, you can sometimes access without prior unlocking, but even if you do, you can’t do the content because oyu lack the gear, so you have to grind it, so it’s the same as it being locked out to your character.

I’m not a fanboy and I seriously feel insulted. Watch your tongue next time.

My aploligies. But what ur saying dosnt make any sense.

As you said you can accsess any content in wow but u cant do it cause ur gear depended. Then you say unlike other mmos in GW u dont need to grind to accsess and do the fun content. Yes its true u can accsess fun content (as in wow and any othermmo) but you still need gear ( cause in arah w/o full exotics etc ur usless ) to actualy do it so no ur statment dosnt stand. In GW you need gear just like in WOW to do certen dungeons.

To put it simple:

wow as an example = can access any content but cant do it w/o gear

GW2 = an access any content but cant do it w/o gear

So what makes GW different to point that “no grind needed” out?

You honestly dont need exotics. I’ve done most content just fine in rare gear. Infact i’ve done harder content and survive more stuff than people in full exotic with so called optimum builds. If your having to use your gear as a crutch to get threw a zone thats on you. But it is not needed. Just takes some teamwork and realizing you have to watch your back while watching others as well. You cant go in as a cannon expecting someone to pick up your slack in the other areas. Otherwise you will be hurting. This is the point there makeing. You dont actually need the gear if you learn to support your team while they support you.

If this isent you then i appologize i just get the feeling from your post your team mates have to clean up after you in the other area’s so you can pewpew more.

Before you read this post realize its actually from the view point of a melee support guardian.

Ok so that being said as a melee type im the first to admit it takes a ton of skill to play melee. But for me theres nothing like the adrenalin i get from the constant test of my abilities. A well played melee really and truly can be the turning point for a group. We have the ability to limit a mobs movement if we play right allowing for max usage of combo skill’s. That in and of its self can turn a fight around. So from a melee stand point i think ANet has infact given us the most important role. We are the ones who set up those big plays. The old saying of greater the risk greater the reward has never been more truthful in my eyes. Makes my day when i know that i made all the difference.

Great input everyone – for the fellow who isn’t in favor of Cleric’s (Pow/Tough/Healing), what say you for the alternative healing Set, which is (Prec/Vitality/Healing)?

I would like to have at least a set with Healing, just in case my party really needs it. Which among the two would you recommend more? Cleric’s is from craft, while the second can be obtain through dungeon rewards.

Its a better set for hybrid if you can find it for jewelery is my thoughts. Issue with it is i’ve yet to find it in jewelery form. Now if you want it for armor best dump a ton into power otherwise your crit damage will be less than someone rolling only power.

It picks up at later levels. Starts slow then the closer to 400 you get the more it is. Would guess from 1-200 you might get 3 levels. From 201-400 around 7.

Oh no… so does that mean that I won’t be able to acquire the gloves & boots in PVE…?

Really depends. I’ve seen the full set in pve. But can only find chest helm and shoulders. Those are all personal story. So if the others were also in the story and you finished already might be out of luck. But if there karma just have to find the right vender.

Dont know if this helps or not but when i looked up the outriders plate helm its showing as a quest reward from the personal story. If the others are in the game they might be a reward as well.

Edit: Or maybe karma. I’ve seen people running around with the set your talking about in pve so i know the full sets there.
