sorry about that, i forgot to put that in, i guess my playstyle is i like to keep my distance since when it comes to melee type playstyle, im not very good at it

Ok ranged types what comes to mind is ranger and ele right off the bat. Now something about this game you might want to get use to is your going to most likely get use to a hybrid play style. Eventually mobs are going to be in melee range and you will have to play in a melee mindset. That being said ele is one of the classes with the highest learning curve in the game that i have played. Ranger on the other hand with hits pets is much more forgiving to new players. Or those that realize there skill levels are only average at best. There are other ranged classes such as thief, engineer, mesmer, necro, and to a lesser degree warrior. Avoid guardian as we dont have very good ranged options. Thief ranged is in my eyes when looking at ranger, engineer, and ele is just lacking in my book. Could just be my play style though. Engineer is great for ranged. They have moderate hp good aoe ability and many different skill’s for ranged to change up how it plays. Only class i found with any where near the variety would be ele. Hope this helps give you some idea’s on class. If any of these sound fun might head to there class boards and look threw the help threads there to get some better idea’s.

Names reserved?

SiNoS.2147

This just makes me even more confused, because I though EU players had no way of getting in contact with US ones and therefor I see no use for the unique names to be shared across all servers.

The main reason its this way is because in the first game you could swap between zone servers with the click of a button. Due to this the name’s had to be unique across all servers. Since this game is directly linked to GW1 it only makes sense that the same rule set would apply.

In reguards to reserved names they will be released at a later time thats still to be disclosed. Try doing multiple word names if your having issues with one word names. Once you get to multiple words in general a lot of names open up. I know people that even go as far as First MI Last.

Q: Computer Advice for GW2

I personally run the game on fairly high graphics without FPS lag, do get server side from time to time, with a AMD 970 (3.5 GHz x4) running 8 GB of 1600 and a GTS 450. This big thing that i notice about people complaining about there performance while running even higher end systems is they normally have something bottle necking there computer. The big thing is make sure you have a stable and powerful CPU, and a decent workhorse GPU.

All that being said heres a build you might look at. This is just the cpu, gpu, motherboard, and ram. Obviously you can look at other brands as there are cheaper ones out there. This is just ones that i know work well together and wont bottleneck your system. The motherboard is more than you would need but it gives you room to add to the setup if incase you ever want to sli/crossfire. These parts would run you $560 of your $1000 budget. Which gives you room if you hunt for the rest of your parts.

Dissapointed by the way developers are addressing retaliation on Guardian

I rather have split skills. Major changes for PvP balance should NEVER affect PvE. Those that want to PvP will learn the difference and wont really have any issues with it. Frankly there were already 2 different systems in place. This isent new to GW2. There were abilities and traits that worked differently in SPvP than PvE from launch. As for Save Yourselfs most likely it wasent nerfed for retaliation. If that was the case much more likely that just that one buff it gave would have been dropped. Much more likely that it was nerfed since its down side was it pulled conditions but in actual SPvP play you rarely actually get the down side so to balance it out they reduced its raw power.

I have noticed a lot of elementalist support focus since release. I heard a lot of griping at first because they were nerfed from where they were in the beta weekends, but now staff elementalists have found a great niche, especially as bunker types in sPvP. As you said everything relies on switch attunements at the right times.

That said, the two more known support classes are the only ones to post. Guardians and Elementalists. Good info but not the only ones out there! One guard or elementalist cant’/shouldn’t do it all.

Hammer guardian and earth elementalist can keep protection on for a good amount of time, I think warrior can keep weakness on fairly well but haven’t tested it extensively myself.

Protection (30% reduced incoming damge) + weakness (50% of attacks are 50% weaker) = approximately 80% damage reduction on 50% of the attacks and 30% on the rest

THAT sounds like a lot of survivability but can we keep weakness and protection up sufficiently?

Hammer guard can keep protection, Im thinking the symbol affects anyone who stands in it with protection, and Ret up perma on the group as long as they stand fairly close. Which as long as everyone isent glass cannon they should be able to do not to mention the more people taking damage the more damage is reflected back onto the mobs.

This forum really needs a facepalm emoticon.

All the class professions do. The whining that goes on is really just sad. I feel like making up an image macro that has “this is what you think you’re doing” followed by one of those Ace Attorney: Objection images, followed by “this is what you’re actually doing” with a picture of some baby bawling their eyes out. Seems to adequately represent most of the posts on the class profession boards.

This i would totally borrow from you.

As for this thread. Guardians do one thing very very well. They survive. From all the classes i have played we are pribally one of the best hybrid playstyle classes out there. By hybrid i mean a mix of offense, defense, and support. The one big draw back is ranged options. But if you love melee and want to be able to be some of the biggest players in a group guardian will suit you well. Just know guardian is not an I Win button. It does take some getting use to and testing to find what works for you. But over all we have some really helpful people in our community and if you tell us what you need or want to do normally we can help you get to that point.

If this sounds like you then welcome to the Guardian Community. If not then best of luck with what you do enjoy.

Eh im personally in the same boat as the others here. I’m tired of carrying the moronic glass cannons and frankly I am to the point im just going to stop reviving them when they get downed. I’ve risked downed multiple time to revive them so they dont take a death and the few times i am downed getting them back up they let the mob kill me as they go back to attacking the mob. Im thinking its time to switch to a 0,15,30,20,5 build so they can see exactly how much i was carrying them threw a zone. They think i dont die with a 0,5,30,30,5 build just wait till they see when i get selfish and go with a screw you build.

Ok so ranting done. Personally i feel we as guardian’s should just go on strike of using support heavy builds and instead focus on ourselfs for a while and let the rest of the classes figure out just what support does for the party as i keep seeing more and more of these support sucks commits and how they carry us threw the zone.

As for my PvE/WvW stats im still working on them but as they set i have 2713 Attack, 26% Crit Chance, 30% Crit Damage, 3033 Armor, 18785 HP, and 584 Healing Power. What it really comes down to imo is two things. Do you want massive pewpew or do you want to run circles around the guy with the big pewpew? In my testing i have found i personally end up doing more damage being a balance build with moderate attack and defense with massive healing threw Altruistic Healing when using staff than when im just a pewpew machine as i die so fast i spend a lot of time retreating or downed. I watch other guard’s around me when im out grinding champions dead on the ground while i just keep on trucking. Ya they might hit 500 or so harder but i normally make up for that and more while everyone is reviving them because they actually died. (And why people actually revive people when theres a way point at max 15 seconds away is beyond me as it takes 30 seconds to a minite just to revive you which in the end makes it that much longer as people who are reviving dead people are not damaging/debuffing the mobs.)

Guardian support?

in Guardian

Posted by: SiNoS.2147

SiNoS.2147

Guardian’s do fine as support. Most people saying reroll dont realize what support truly is. Will you be able to “support” someone who is nothing more than a glass cannon expecting healers to carry them threw a fight? The answer is no. BUT what you can do is provide a buffer to those around you threw your skills that will save them from minor to mid level mistakes. That is the job of a support. We are there to make it easier on our mates to survive and we fill that roll very well. Heck i my self am able to set on a champion and tank it while dishing out dps boosters while throwing aoe aegis when i notice a big hit coming to make sure that those around me dont have to run away from the mob. And to be honest as long as they are not glass cannons they normally dont have to move. This is the point of support. By me playing this way we dont have to kite a mob meaning we burn it faster since we can chain big hits/combo fields and stay with our hardest hitting dps weapons.

@Fildydarie

I agree with you, but OP has a point. We have longer CDs due to more support abilities, BUT this is extremely punishing to DPS Guardians. Anet mentioned we can play any role/style we want with any class, the way i see it, after OP’s comparison and also after reading your findings, Anet is making Guardians purely support class. This is a serious flaw, Anet promised we can play any role/style right?

Now i always play a support role and im happy with the Guardians being support oriented, but i do sympathize with our fellow Guardians that want a DPS role.

A lot of trolls ask out fellow DPS Guardians to play warrior, but it only serves to strengthen the fact that Anet failed hard in their concept of every profession can play the role/style they want…

A lot of DPS guardians i see want to play it like a warrior is the issue. Guardian can still do good dps. Its just never going to be the same playstyle to warrior. And no im not saying this to bash them. I am just pointing out anytime the dps side comes up its instantly compaired to the play style of the warrior. We are not warriors. If you try to play like one then yes in all honesty maybe you should change to one just because that is the play style you want. I never remember seeing you can play any style you want on any class, (Would be kinda silly to say that as there would have to be only one class to start with a selection of skill’s that are universal kinda like The Elder Scrolls series and you choose which skill combo you want would be the only way to pull that off.). If you can find that post please link it. I do remember them saying you can fill every role, and infact we can.

@Stamen,

Actually, if you want survivability, you’ll want Focus, not Shield. And Hammer is probably more survivable than Greatsword, especially with Altruistic Healing. Also, I don’t know what build you’re running. Power/Toughness isn’t a build, unless you mean you went Zeal/Valor, in which case, are you using Altruistic Healing or Monk’s Focus?

Furthermore, all-signets is probably a bad idea with Guardians if you want survivability, especially if you’re not Radiance.

But none of that matters at all. The problem is that you’re defining survivability as the ability to take down enemies quickly. If that’s what survivability means to you, then yeah, of course Guardians are going to be less survivable than a thief.

You’re building your Guardian like a thief or a warrior and expecting survivability. It won’t happen. If you want high damage and the ability to take down mobs quickly, you should consider a Burn build with Right-Hand Strength and Spirit Weapons. If you want survivability, you should look at Altruistic Healing and Monk’s Focus, plus Hammer, or Mace.

Guardians don’t survive like Thieves do. Greatsword is an aggressive weapon. You actually sacrifice Survivability to use it, and when you do use it, it’s probably best used when you have Combo Fields to activate.

Reading your post, the problem doesn’t seem to be that Guardians lack survivability. The problem seems to be that you’ve built your Guardian to farm like a Thief, and he’s getting killed and not living as long. That’s expected. Guardians don’t kill things as fast as Thieves do. Spirit Weapons + Burning, Monk’s Focus and Altruistic Hammer builds are probably your best bet for good damage and survivability.

I think whats happening is he dies to stuff on his guard that he kills on the thief. He might think its due to the thief killing faster. I could be wrong but without a gear, talent, and skill breakdown its hard to tell. We know hes rolling with less than 13k hp which will be part of the issue hes seeing. I know im in rare’s and i have 2776 attack, 2765 armor, and 18705 hp running a shout build and im normally the one killing the group that i see multiple people running from nearly dead while i finish my own group because they trained it onto me. Even in orr i have no issues taking on 7-10 mobs at once.

ETA: My theif is standing right at 14K – which I find hilarious.

Most of us feel the difference is from conditions. While normal damage doesent do much conditions eat threw our low hp base. For some reason that 15k mark seems to be like a switch was flipped. I know that at 13k i died a ton. At 15k that ammount was reduced by over 75% for myself. I currently set around 19-22k depending on WvW status. I can say that from 15k to what i set at has barely made any difference other than the fact i personally feel better seeing my hp at that amount.

What I do know is that my Thief with dual daggers can stand up against more enemies than my Guardian with a GS.

What build are you running with your Guardian? What are your traits and weapon swaps, and what utilities? And which fights are you talking about in which your Thief can stand up to more enemies than your Guardian?

Guardians are a great defensive class, but that defense is not automatic. It takes a bit of tuning and a bit of optimization, and good situational awareness, to produce a highly survivable Guardian.

If you post your details and the fights in which you have trouble (because not all encounters are the same), we can probably help you out. Greatsword, by the way, is not the best choice for a survivability build. It’s an aggressive weapon focused on dealing damage to multiple nearby targets and triggering Combo Fields. Survivable Guardians should be looking at Hammer or Mace. Even Sword and Scepter are more defensive than Greatsword.

Retaliation doesn’t really contribute to your survivability. It just rewards you for brinksmanship.

Right now I’m power/toughness spec’d using mostly sigs in my other slots, unless I drop one for retreat. But I’ve been level 80 guard since the first week of the game, so I’ve tried most every combo. Sure I could go mace/sheild and stand up longer… but why would I in PvE situations?

Suppose I’ve got an hour to play and want to gather top level resources. I take my guardian out to hit the spots.

1) He is slower than my thief … has retreat to hasten himself but that’s it. I can equip a sig on my thief and automatically run 25% faster, plus I can dodge once on him for 3-4 seconds of swiftness. Speed comes in VERY handy in Orr where you literally can’t even find a spot to park your toon to answer the dang phone because of all the Risen spawns.

2) Every so often, happens to everyone while out running to nodes, you get cornered or worse immobilzed and have to take on 2-5 Risen. Before the changes, I could GS those down (usually). I can position myself carefully enough on my theif to take them down right now using dual daggers — a MELEE WEAPON set, popping a bleed and evading. Rinse and repeat. My guardian has no such priviledge. Survivability might go up some with a shield – maybe enough to burn enough around me to survive the encounter, it just takes twice as long.

3) My skill bar on my Guardian is highly limited compared to my Thief. Sure I can stack up the slots with heals – ridiculously long recharge times which sucks if you are running nodes. Half my options are of this category. The other half are fairly useful for burning or removing conditions or summoning spirit weapons. But my thief can “warp” with his skills allowing him to escape being beaten on by multiple Risen. My theif can cripple a group of Risen – in some specs cripple them just with one evade. Allowing me to continue my node farming relatively easily. Not to unlike my Necro I might add.

My point is very simply that my Guardian in heavy armor dies more often than my thief in medium armor in a Greatsword vs. Dual Dagger comparison. My Guardian takes twice as long to hit the 12-15 nodes I want to hit on harvesting. I’m sorry, but I agree with the OP – it’s a kitteny excuse for a heavy armor profession.

Part of survivability is being able to take down things fast. Something the Guardian doesnt do well anymore.

How much hp do you have? Many guardians, myself included, have found if your below 15000 hp or so our survivability is severly lowered. I would go as far to say by 50%. For some reason that 5000 hp makes a world of difference. More than about anything else you can do to increase your survivability.

I only bring this up because i do have a thief and its survivability is no where near what my guard’s is. i can go threw stuff with my guardian that my thief wouldent even dream of. This includes takeing out some champion’s solo. Granted guard may not be as fast of a killer but it will walk threw stuff laughing as my thief has to way point out due to death.

does 'heal allies' heal yourself too?

Ill just use hold the line as an example while it states it grants protection and regeneration to allies it also applies these to your self. In general i’ve found this to be true with most things.

I’d rather it be more like a reactive “block” of one attack that we can use two or three times as often. I quoted Block because I’m thinking something like a “Heal” mechanic — you get hit for a boatload, and smack #5 in X seconds to heal (or reverse) the damage.

So basically something like aegis on a shorter cast time or are you actually wanting a skill that heals us after we take damage? Reason i ask is because 9/10 times if im hit by something that requires those type skill’s im downed and there is no hitting that skill. While i do like the idea of reactive instead of proactive in this game it just doesent fit as anything worth reacting to isent something you normally can react to. even dodging is proactive to a degree just a very short one. Unless your getting smashed everything you go to dodge in which case your kinda missing the skill :P.

Many of us, look the cd and the skill effect, and proposed to NERF the skill and have back the old GS cooldowns.

And for people that say: “think when to use sow, instead of spam it”
i can say that i prefer to think when activate a finisher with the leap, instead of thinking when to use a skill that many many people have traited. (and me like others have not traited simbols for SOW retaliation, i hate retaliation, its i boon that for me can deleted now from the game!)

Stop trying to turn this thread into a GS whine thread. This thread is not about that. Its about the cooldowns in general across all our weapons. Troll somewhere else please.
