Agony is actually rather brilliant

Here’s the problem I’ve always had with agony: If most all of the attacks that do agony are entirely avoidable or able to be negated, what’s the point of agony and the resist? Just have them do a fixed percent of HP so that it’s completely reliant on skill to avoid, minus the safety cushion of the resist. It seems to me that it only exists for the sake of the stat grind and gear-gating people at specific points.

Now, ill show you a truely hard jumping puzzle ; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSoGSmdqTn0

I got to the part where his camera started going nuts and I stopped watching…this is exactly my problem with so much of the jumping in this game. Half of the time you’re fighting the camera, terrible misleading surfaces, and stiff jump mechanics rather than some legit challenge of the puzzle itself. Personally I’d like to see more of these emphasize more “puzzle” than awkward jumping. For half of these someone may as well be shaking around my monitor while I’m trying to play.

I actually kind of like what I’m hearing about how GW1 used to be. Very easy to obtain maximum stats with the long-term achievement stuff being purely cosmetic. It seems to fit more within their philosophy of “have fun now instead of waiting to have fun”. Sure we can all play with “lesser” gear, but for me the best parts of the game have always started once I’m maxed out and ready to pit my completed build against every challenge.

How hard will it be? That remains to be seen. I’m mostly looking at the current pattern of how they’ve chosen to implement it and expecting that it will be similar in the future. I do hope that they prove otherwise! As for the stats, however, they’ve already stated that it will be above exotic, so that’s really not a debatable issue. Ascended gear will have superior stats and it is only a matter of time until they completely eclipse exotics.

The thing with the time is, I do play enough to reasonably outfit all of my characters if they were to implement a method that isn’t just reliant on me waiting until the next day. It bugs me right now because, outside of playing a game mode I don’t like, I can’t actually work any harder towards the goal I have. It feels very limiting.

It’s not marginal – the percent increase on every single piece of gear will add up to being a flat increase of that amount across the stats you choose.

I’m not sure what the rush is. I play MMOs for long periods of time. A couple of months in MMO time is nothing to me.

I’m four days away from getting my necklace, and that’s only 20 days after they instituted the daily. Getting one piece of gear a month, assuming I never do level 10 fractals (I’m at 8 now) is fine. I don’t see what the big rush is.

It’s not going to drastically change the game for me. It might not even noticably change it. I’ll be doing all the same things I did after I get it as before I got it.

I just don’t get the whole immediacy thing.

Oh, no rush, per se, although I will have my ascended laurel amulet the first day it’s actually possible since I haven’t missed a laurel yet. I’ve got the ascended Triforge on one character already.

The problem is that I play more than one character, and I have to draw from the same pool of laurels to outfit them all, whereas people who simply grind Fractals will likely have all of their gear in little time if they keep with the style of pressuring us to play that game mode. If I wanted to outfit all of my Lv80 characters without playing a game mode I don’t like, it would literally take me months and months just to achieve that single tier of gear.

With specific gear combinations available only on ascended items, I simply can’t be arsed to wait that long just to complete those characters’ builds. It doesn’t feel like there’s any reason for it other than for the sake of waiting.

The game is balanced around tPvP and sPvP, because that is just how all MMO’s with PvP systems work. They need to work their way toward a balanced class system, in order to make the game an E-sports eventually. That being said, elementalists atm in tPvP are too strong. You might see paid teams running 2-3 D/D elementalists because of their mobility, utility, and AoE DPS. Just having an elementalist on your team in PvP gives you a large advantage as this is the current meta game in tPvP.

WvWvW is never suppose to be balanced anyways, albeit it does need some form of it but not as much from a tPvP perspective.

I would imagine they would nerf mobility (ride the lightning comes to mind) and healing in some aspect with the incoming nerf.

lulz, e-sport. Let them mess with the class in s/tPvP then.

It’s one thing to balance it, but another to just demolish the build. If Anet’s record tells us anything it’s that anyone who uses something remotely similar to the popular 0/10/0/30/30 setup may as well prepare to redesign themselves now, PvE or otherwise. Thankfully my other favorite character is a Warrior.

No they don’t own you, but you are non representing, you are not helping in any way shape or form, you are just taking a spot a meaningful player could use, you aren’t even bringing any conversation to the group so, its no loss if you moved on..

This way of thinking supposes too much and seems to be looking for excuses to alienate people for the sake of the same sort of bizarre cult mentality which had come to mind earlier.

If I choose not to represent 10% of the time, it’s no loss if I move on? Guess whatever I do while repping the other 90% of the time amounts to squat then. I should think that in the vast majority of situations this wouldn’t matter anyway because most of the more tolerable guilds I’ve seen aren’t at their member cap.

Just let me salvage ascended rings into Vials/Globs/Shards of Mist Essence already. All my alts even those that have never set foot in a fractal are ascended geared already.

That’s nice…if you can stand playing fractals that much. I hate them, personally. Where is the option for this gear for those of us who dislike playing the same few dungeon levels over and over and over and over and over?

Why do you need ascended gear if you aren’t planning on doing the content it was designed for? You even have the amulet available to you, which is unavailable in fractals. Where is the amulet option for those of us who dislike playing the same few dailes over and over and over and over and over?

Higher stats.
/thread

This.

Inevitably this 8-9% boost in stats will add up to making my character that much stronger; if ascended things were purely cosmetic plus Agony Resist, it would be one thing, but these are currently THE end game stats, achievable only in these very limited ways. I don’t doubt that one day I will actually need them to be effective in endgame PvE or normal dungeons, not to mention to have stats competitive with the people I encounter while roaming WvW.

Amulet option is the Triforge Pendant, achievable with gold. Unfortunately it only has one set of stats. However it is also worth mentioning that at least part of dailies can be done while running fractals also, leaving you with the oh-so-daunting task of running around for 5-10 minutes tops between your fractal runs to gather ore or what have you. I’m mostly just really hoping that the upcoming laurel methods are good ones.

I think you are half correct.

The pricing does seem odd but I think its due to the fact that Anet arer looking at the whole picture.
Rings can be purchased through multiple avenues now. Fractals and dailies, where as amulets can only be purchased with laurels.
It would then make sense to have amulets cheaper, promoting efficient players to play fractals for rings.

Otherwise they would be alot more complaints surronding the cost. Where as alot of people have accepted fractals as the shortcut, and one you can use to gear up your toon at the same time as dailies for amulets.

Problem is, some of us hate fractals and the method for getting the ascended rings by not playing fractals literally takes MONTHS for more than one character, with no way to speed up this process, no matter how much effort you’re willing to put into it. What’s more, laurels spent on rings can’t be spent on amulets.

It feels like some sad attempt to get me to play longer (not actually more), when honestly I’d be more willing to play a game that doesn’t try to funnel me into a specific mode of play or force me to wait for nearly a month for a single piece of gear.

I’ve put something like 1400 hours into this game since launch…it just blows me away that the only progress I can make towards an ascended ring at this point is 15 minutes worth of play a day with the use of that reward being directly at odds with getting a different piece of gear, or else play a game mode I really don’t like.

What I don’t understand is the choice in cost for rings vs. amulets. It makes no sense that an amulet, being statistically superior to an individual ring, costs 30 laurels whereas a single ring costs 35. Unless, of course, we assume that the developers are trying to force us into fractals with this nonsensical pricing system. Super.

Now from what I understand, there will be more methods to acquire these ascended items. I sincerely hope this is the case, because I have no interest in fractals. I do, however, have an interest in 10% higher stats for the rest of the game and don’t feel like grinding away in a game mode which I do not like for the sake of these better statistics which will someday almost certainly be necessary to actually be effective.

I partly agree, partly disagree. My main thought is – you can get 1 ascended gear item in 20 days (~50-60 days for all 3) by doing 30 minutes of work a day on my daily. I kind of wish you could at least half that time by doing 1 hour of work a day…

I was thinking the same thing the other day. For some reason it’s acceptable to repeat the same fractal levels over and over and over for rings, but it’s not available for me to complete my daily 10 times one one day for more laurels or something? I’d rather do it that way than suffer through PUG fractals, to be honest. Picking my poison. >_>

Or stop pressuring us into playing a mode that many of us find to be boring, repetitive, and generally not fun. It matters a lot. I can track down and kill targets I can’t see. I can’t track down and kill targets I can’t catch. Culling doesn’t prevent damage any more than stealth does (actually less, since you can target a culled opponent).

It really only takes one clever directional movement on behalf of the invisible player to avoid enough damage for the culling to take care of the rest as they run carefree off into the distance. They probably don’t even know they’re still invisible. I’ve damaged and downed a few in situations like this, but more often than not they’re just gone forever if it was their intent to escape. It really amounts to the same if you don’t get lucky and hit them immediately.

But this is because culling is some times broken, not because thieves are overpowered, the fact was we could not kill eachother, every time he bled me, I cured it, and I found out where he was and slashed him to heal myself up.

Totally agree. In a normal scenario, I definitely don’t think Thieves are overpowered. In fact, like I said, I wouldn’t mind them getting more options for playing style. The class is cool, but the game is still pretty young yet – most classes just need a little fine tuning.

I’m not demanding a change right here and now, merely one to keep in mind for later assuming they can’t sufficiently fix the culling, since it’s a complex issue. We all know this stuff takes time.

I wish my culling were like 1s max…it usually seems to more than double stealth duration. I feel so cheated every time I’m presented with it because it feels as though I can’t properly fight my enemy due to something completely beyond my control.

I thought it was apparent when I said I was done with the thread, really. Someone told me that people are still responding, however. I suppose it’s not surprising, given how little of my posts were allowed to remain and how fewer yet were likely actually read by the people replying to me.

Guys, the escape thing I’m talking about is a combination of the way the current stealth mechanic works with the culling issues. Please actually do read my posts before you try to refute them. Again, for the Xth time, what I am saying is that if culling cannot be satisfactorily corrected, the stealth mechanic probably should be for the sake of satisfying the same ends. Make sense?

A few specific things because you people are so relentless:

Is it op? I wouldn’t say so. Neither you or him could kill each other, and that’s proof enough of the balance it gives.

If anything, it confirms that Thieves need more options to be able to hang around in a fight after this is resolved. The fact is that were it not for culling adding on to his apparent invisibility, he’d not have stood a chance. I’m not one of those people screaming, “Nerf Thieves”, despite what I’m sure most of you would like to believe.

And yes, as an aside, I’ve killed more than a few D/D Eles on my own. Most of them aren’t that skilled it seems. Also, I fought a P/P Thief the other night, who managed to remain invisible for 90% of the fight, despite the obvious lack of useful stealth abilities. I think we can agree that culling needs attention, but it’s important to note that this was only made possible because of how stealth actually interacts with it perfectly by virtue of complete invisibility.

You might wait a lot of time for satisfying patch notes. Anet wants thief to be a class with a lot of escapes.

Also, d/d ele complaining about thieves’ mobility. Hypocrism in its highest form. Nothing can catch an ele.

I get the feeling that, due to their acknowledgment of the culling problem, they did not intend for them to have escapes in this particular way. It’s one thing to outmaneuver your opponent – it is yet another to be given much longer invisibility than intended because of the way a mechanic works in tandem with an existing game flaw. One fix or another, the problems obviously should not co-exist.

Your comment on my Ele is irrelevant to Thief mechanics I described. However, it bears mentioning that an Ele can still be immobilized, repeatedly stunned, knocked down, etc. because targeting them is still an option.

Thief may not have had their stealth intended to be a perfect exit strategy (or other broken “strategy”), but again, repeating this because people still can’t seem to read, this is how it is able to function due to the culling issue. Again, in massive, bold text for those who can’t seem to understand what I’m saying:

IT DOES NOT MATTER IF YOUR MOBILITY IS SUPERIOR OR NOT IF THE ENEMY LITERALLY CANNOT SEE YOU OR DIRECTLY TARGET YOU AS THE RESULT OF CULLING INTERACTING WITH AN INVISIBILITY MECHANIC; YOU DO NOT NEED TO OUTRUN AN ENEMY THAT CANNOT BEGIN TO FOLLOW YOU

Now if you’re all done trying to refute an argument I’m not making, perhaps you can move on.
