The monthlies are fine. Most people seem to be able to do them within a few days, it takes me a bit longer but I can usually get them done.
Making them harder to achieve for someone who can and is prepared to spend 12 hours of their day playing the game, might then make it near impossible for those of who can’t, don’t or wouldn’t want to invest so much of our time on it.
No. “Hard core” and “Casual” players can not co-exist, because each demands the others content be destroyed. It’s as simple as that.
I get what you are saying, but with the world as big as it is, don’t you think they could create areas that would cater to both. Maybe a section of the world would cater to hard core gamers, and another that casual players would get a lot of fun out of without being over challenged.
I see the need for both. There are people who only use a game for entertainment and often don’t have time to commit to it in any way. And the hard core gamers that use it for sport need to be challenged.
In my opinion, I just thing there could be areas geared toward one or another like zones are character leveled.
In terms of -actual- content? yes, you can design an MMO to facilitate the needs of all. However, that isn’t how it works out.
See…the hard core people need rewards in terms of loot, the casual people see that loot, and want it, but they don’t actually want to put in the time to get it.
Thus begins the great decline. Casual players aren’t satisfied with just having their own content, that they can do. They want to do (and benefit from) all content, regardless if they put in the time or have to skill to actually do said content.
Example: The Jumping puzzles that came with the holiday events. Even know the reward is useless and cosmetic, people flamed and roared on the forums about how difficult the puzzle was, and that they wanted easy mode versions of it, but still wanted the rewards.
It’s because of this, that casual and hardcore can never co-exist.
I think you might be confusing “casual” with “entitled” and it’s a common misconception on these forums. An allegedly “casual” player who won’t do fractals complaining that he’s being denied access to the ascended gear doesn’t mean that every casual player is complaining about it.
I’m a casual player and I’ve been co-existing with hardcore players since launch, so have many others. Not every casual player wants the rewards without putting in the effort. I’m not brilliant at jumping puzzles, I couldn’t do the Mad King’s Clock Tower to save myself. I complained a lot about that one… to my friends. I shouted at my monitor, my mouse, my keyboard and even my hands a couple of times but it was my fault I couldn’t do it, nobody else to blame. Making it easier probably wouldn’t have helped me much. I did the rest of the Mad King stuff and it was fine.
I didn’t even attempt the Wintersday jumping puzzle because I’m not brilliant at jumping puzzles. I did the rest of the Wintersday stuff and it was fine. I did Flame and Frost and I did Southsun Cove, no real drama there it just took me longer.
It took me months to get 100% World Completion but I got there. It’s going to take me much longer to get my legendary, but, barring accident, injury or illness, I’ll get there too.
Dump your necro if you want, but only because you don’t want to play it any longer, not because somebody else has convinced you it’s not fit for purpose.
Where do you draw the line on the “last online” status if you get it? Are major Guild contributors in danger of being punted because they decide to have a month away from their computer?
They could probably do it for Henchmen/Heroes without too much difficulty for story mode dungeons since they all have NPCs in there anyway. Mercenaries, like we had in GW1 might be a little more problematic. I forget how old GW1 was by the time we got mercenaries, but it was a good few years, so I wouldn’t be looking for them anytime soon.
The one in LA where you have to find some false walls, easily avoid some moving spikes and then a short area where the lights go on and off. Hint use an AOE reticle to provide some lighting. There is also a weapon karma vendor at the end, level 40 pirate gear I believe.
I turn up the Gamma settings until I can see the outlines of everything. Not pretty but it’s bearable for the length of time this takes after the lights go out.
I just like the idea that the OP equates efficiency to zerker gear. Like we haven’t seen some ham fisted zerkers out there.
I totally suck at dragon ball. I can’t hit anyone because my reactions are way too slow. I think I might actually die less if I tried it afk.
We did this with 5 mesmers. With Signet of Midnight, Blink, Portal and Time Warp we were able to finish it 3 minutes before we actually started, which meant we didn’t need to bother. So we went to the pub instead.
I refuse to play a Charr because in GW1 they set fire to my house.
It’s nice on charrs
To me, Charrs look good in almost nothing.. except for this helm, looks pretty sick
In GW1 pre-searing, Blazefiend Griefblade looked pretty good wearing my axe on his head.
I must be the only one who simply cannot be bothered with the mystic toilet, except to make items where I know the recipe works 100% of the time, like superior siege items for WvW.
There is a definition for insanity. You guys should look it up.
You’re missing out on the thrill of anticipation. The rush of adrenaline when maybe just this one time it’ll be a precursor and the ease with which foul language flows when it isn’t.
You speak of insanity like it’s a bad thing. Come… join us.
Enragedly, which is an anagram of Legendary is how I usually end up throwing things into the mystic forge after multiple failed attempts at a precursor. I feel for the OP because I’ve been there, though not quite so often it seems. With those numbers of rares and exotics, it might have been cheaper (and easier) to just buy a Legendary from the Black Lion.
Rollerbeetle racing was pretty good. Be interesting to see if they can squeeze that in somewhere.
I could live with that.
I think Anet should make Monthly achivs longer and harder.
It’s 1st of the month,and I already done 5 of them.
100 Events, WvW kills , etc.
And even my salvages at 270.A monthly should really take like at least a half month, in my opinion.
Even at casual playing [so casual players can be happy too].But the current monthly lasts only for a few days, then if you completed it….then you become a bit frustrated until the end of the month.
Because you want to do long-termed things or least monthly things, but you done everything in a few days :\
The current format for the monthlies might only take you a day, but it takes me considerably longer. Good for you if you can spend so much time at the computer you can finish the monthlies in a day, but I can’t, so this is one casual player who wouldn’t be happy.
Just got an email with a Black Lion Salvage Kit to replace the one I used up while this bug was active. I don’t salvage many rares because I’m way down the curve on ectos salvaged, but I did try salvaging a few when this thread kicked off and I didn’t really notice any difference, so it was nice to receive this.
I haven’t salvaged a rare for months because I was well below the curve on ectos. It was better to just sell the rares and buy ectos when I needed them. Of course thanks, in part, to the panic mongering within this thread the prices are starting to creep back up again. It’s been interesting reading all data supporting the nerf theories though, it never occurred to me that people would keep spreadsheets to record their salvage rates. Clearly, I’m playing a different game.
You’re not alone. I got him about three quarters down on his health and then the mines just stopped working for me. I gave up eventually. I’ll try again tomorrow maybe if my blood pressure has returned to normal.
You already have permanent content.
You might find somewhere down the line that something similar to Guild Wars Henchmen are made available for story mode dungeon instances.
Hydras were murder if you weren’t quick in taking them down.
I absolutely hated the Titans. You took out the Titan and then got the Risen Ashen Hulk, then you got the Hand and the Fist of the Titans once you’d taken that out. It was just hard cheese if you accidentally killed a second Titan before you’d dealt with the spawns of the first one.
Waggs is not the Messiah, he’s a very naughty boy.
This game is anything but anti-social. I’m on Gandara and it’s as friendly a community as you’d hope to find.
You don’t play the game to make friends, you make friends as you play the game. Rather than expect the community to fall into line with what you want, why not try and adapt?
I’ll be honest, I would have liked a choice of Molten Skins, (I get a ticket I can trade in for 1 of them) for having done everything.
Or a title. Something I could have walked away with, going “yah, I got this!” as opposed to all I got was a few insigna’s for having run the dungeon a few times in hopes of a jetpack.
You did get a title, you got Avenger of the Dispossessed.
If players new to a dungeon want to complete it without using spoilers then they should specify that when looking for a group. Expecting someone in your group to explain what to do, or to carry you, is a little selfish. It’s not fair to players that do not have the time or want to take the time to do so.
Your assumption here seems to be that players new to a dungeon and who haven’t studied it beforehand will somehow hinder progress or compromise the effectiveness of the group. Maybe they will, maybe they won’t, only time will tell. The only thing we know for certain before they enter the dungeon is that they want to go in and presumably, successfully get to the end.
New players almost certainly won’t be aware of the elitism that has crept into dungeon runs. It might just never occur to them that not stating their inexperience upfront will be an issue later on. It doesn’t mean they’re trying to conceal something or are expecting the other members in the group to carry them.
Experienced players who somehow imagine their time is more precious and don’t want to have newbies in their group are the ones who have the problem here, not the new players. The onus is on them to state what they want, not the new players who just want to do a dungeon.
Geez people will argue about anything on forums -.-
No we won’t.
Arranging the words I quoted into better English, it would be “People like me like to help others when they’re smart enough to learn and ask about something. Nobody was born knowing.”
Aside from the “smart enough” phrase, I’m not seeing that as condescending in the least. . .
Aside from the “smart enough” phrase it isn’t. So we’re in agreement, yes? It’s condescending.
It’s condescending now to say “I’ll help you if you admit you need help”? >_>
No, it’s not, but that’s not what he said. You should read the words as he typed them, not as you’ve rearranged them in your head.
I like how you skipped entirely over this part of the OP:
people like me like to explain and help other when they are the enough smart to learn and ask about something. nobody born knowing.
The part you quoted, on the other hand, comes right after he mentions Arah and FotM. I could easily see either of those instances breaking after several frustrating hours if people don’t know the fights.
To me, the plain English of his message is “Please watch the videos. They were made for a reason. If you won’t do that, at least be honest and admit you don’t know the fights so I can help you instead of wasting my time.”
You’re right, I did skip over that part, it’s condescending.
It’s no a pre-requisite if I remember is a tip.
-read guide
-watch video
-ask if don’t know Gladly to respond and help. But don’t stay quiet and pretend nobody will realize you inexperience.
Can we be a less hipocrites and and admit we all wacth videos for builds, runes, farm methods and even puzzles? But why make a fuss when I say:
For the good of the party: learn some aspect of the dungeon you want to do.Arah is no like COF1 that you can just pew pew you way. I repeat I’m casual and waste about 1-2 hr wiping in lupis because people don’t know what to do when you only have to watch a 10 min video and then contribute to you party.
Sorry if I sound elitist. But I remember my mon say: if you will do something no matter what do it right and perfect, “even if is waste you night in a game”.
:)
Elitist is exactly how you sound. If you feel that people who don’t watch videos in advance of entering a dungeon are wasting your time, you should make a point of not going into dungeons with them. It would take less time for you to ask them if they know what they’re doing, than it would for them to watch the video.
You didn’t exactly say watch the video for the good of the party, it was more about not wasting your time. New players might not be aware that others would like them to know every inch of a dungeon like the back of their hands. They might be under the impression that they’re going in to have some fun and bugger the consequences of their inexperience.
Consequently, they don’t mention it because they’re not aware, that for some, it’s an issue.
I think you need to re-read the OP. At no point does he say it should be a prerequisite; rather, he’s actually begging people new to dungeons to do it. He also says he’s more than willing to explain encounters to those willing to listen, but they have to speak up and give fair warning, not just run in guns blazin’.
For the record, that’s pretty much my stance, too. Granted, nothing can replace actually running an encounter for getting experience; but video guides are a great boon to the community. That being said, I have no qualms helping out first-timers in a dungeon or sharing strategies I know with people new to a given path. Barring weird situations where I don’t think I can properly convey a message with words, that help doesn’t amount to “go watch this video.” At the same time, before I stepped into Arah, I took it upon myself to watch the videos for the paths, because trying to jump head-first into the most difficult dungeon blindly seems rather fool-hardy.
Actually, I think it’s you who might need to re-read the OP. The English, by his own admission isn’t brilliant but the message is quite clear. If you’re new to a dungeon and you’re too lazy to watch a guide then don’t waste his time, because if it all starts to fall apart during a run he’ll quit… he says it right here “… and its sux when you have to quit and waste you time because others are too lazy to read a guide or watch a guide …”
That, to me, is making it a prerequisite. A lot of people obviously do watch videos before entering a dungeon, but just as many don’t and they shouldn’t have to. It’s easy enough to ask before entering if everyone in the group has experience.
Good idea, but it would all but make the instant repair kits on the Trading Post redundant and I guess Anet really wants people to buy those.
There are minis for sale on the Black Lion, so they can’t all be account bound.
Nothing wrong with using youtube, but the OP seems to want it to be a prerequisite for dungeon participation. For some people, discovery is the fun part. Making the mistakes and then figuring out how not to, is the fun part. A bit more fun than copying the moves and the builds from someone else on youtube surely?
Yes, let’s all watch youtube so we can learn how to do dungeons properly and not waste the valuable time of others.
Do you have any other ideas on how to suck the enjoyment out of this game?
My tip for newbies would be not to join you in a dungeon.
If you send in false reports surely you should get banned?
They shouldn’t be available in dungeons or WvW etc., but I would LOVE to bring an alt to open world PvE as a partner. Especially if they kept their stats and armour etc. It would really add a new dimension to the PvE side as you could customise you classes accordingly.
Again, not for dungeons or any PvP, but most definitely would be awesome in regular play.
Dungeons are the only places where I think they might be needed. They’d fill the gap for groups of 3 or 4 players and avoid waiting ages for a fifth or going into the dungeon undermanned.
I like the idea of this for Dungeons maybe where you’re a couple of bodies short of a team and you just can’t find anyone, but not for the open World.
I think the OP might be onto something here, though he’s selling the idea a little short.
The Gem Store should be selling “zone finisher” crystals, so that when you hit a new zone and you just don’t have the time to complete it because you have a life, just double click your “zone finisher” crystal and Hey Presto… All done.
Personal Story finisher crystals would be a good idea too, just click this crystal whenever the personal story is interfering with you having a life and a Golden Chariot will appear and fly you to the Ruined City of Arah, where you’ll be whisked onto an airship so you can watch Zhaitan immolate himself.
Pretty much anything by Two Steps From Hell fits in pretty well.
What exactly do you use the vault transport for anyway? I’ve never had a time when I couldn’t hop in to lion’s arch and just stick my stuff in the guild bank the direct way.
You’ve obviously never had one of those “Bugger, I wish I hadn’t left all the bowls of Curry Butternut Squash Soup in the Guild Vault,” moments while a Champion something or other is trying to bludgeon you.
I have a “remove friend” option when I right click a name on my contact list. Doesn’t that work?
Way too complex, particularly the “risky trade” idea.
And I’m sorry, but taking a percentage of a player’s loot and giving it directly to the Guild bank is almost like levying a tax on them for representing the Guild. People who wanted to hold onto all of their loot would pretty soon just stop representing and then Guilds themselves would lose out on the influence.
I wouldn’t make a Charr anyway. They set fire to my house in Guild Wars.
I originally wrote this thread off as a case of “sour grapes” because complaining about someone using a skill that enables others to take a short cut, to let others actually take a short cut seemed like… sour grapes. To be honest it still does, but this is by far the most entertaining thread I’ve read in ages.
This part… " If someone is honestly still using the arrow keys to turn then they have lost a grip of reality" is my favourite. I fear the irony was lost however.
It’s implied that in an online game that you play with other people and that a lot of the game will be group based. The devs even stated they wanted this game to have a sense of community. I’m paraphrasing of course.
You can say you think there should be solo content but this goes against the game philosophy and all online RPG games in general. Just because WoW lets you solo a lot of content doesn’t mean that every game must. If people want a game that has l solo content then there’s plenty of console and pc games you can choose from. Skyrim is a good choice.
If you have such an issue playing with other people then maybe you should think whether online games are really for you. Group content will not go away. This is not directed at anyone specifically or meant to be offensive. I just don’t know any better way to put this.
Sorry but the old “maybe online games aren’t for you” tail has been wagged too often. Most people don’t have any issue grouping up for things, but a lot do have an issue with grouping up to finish a story line that was soloable right up until the last chapter. Not exactly the best advert for the “play the game the way you want” campaign. It’s something that might cause people to stop and think before buying any expansions that might be on the horizon.
It’s not always possible to be online at the same time as your friends or guildies and maybe some people just don’t want to see a complete stranger in the cut scene for a story mode dungeon. There are a variety of reasons why somebody might not want to group up, my guess is that “maybe online games aren’t for you” isn’t one of them.
MMO just means there are a lot of people playing, there’s no real requirement to team up with anyone out there in PVE and the personal story shouldn’t have ended with such a requirement.
I went through the bulk of the personal story teamed with two people and it would’ve been nice to finish off that chapter with just those same two people, but ANet didn’t want me to, so I get where the OP is coming from.
