Snow.2048

Let’s just re-examine where I’m coming from:

1. There are only FIVE races in this game, and I can’t name all 5.

2. I don’t know how many classes there are, and the ones I do know, I don’t know what they do. (What the heck does an Engineer do?)

There’s no desire to learn about them, because there’s no reason to. All grouping via a dungeon ends up with somebody tanking while I sit in the back hitting 2 and 5. People say that WoW conditioned players to just heal, dps, or tank, how is this any different?

3. I was a Gladiator in that game. I had to know stats, how to enchant, how to gem, how to itemize, what skills every class did, how to properly time abilities – none of that is required here.

4. I had actual goals laid out – you log in, you do your dailies that actually lead to gear, and that helps you in a larger raid with a large number of people, with a clear goal and progression. Dailies in this game are: log in, do 3 things, get some karma and gold.

5. My guild has about 100 people, and nobody is ever on. And the only reason I’m in it was I had nobody to actually talk to at 80 because there is no grouping in this game so where exactly would I find people? A guild, in my mind, is a group of players who have the same goals in mind (endgame content) and want to work together. Here, it’s just people with a tag. There’s no 10, 15, 25, 40 man content, and everything I can do with my guild I can just do in LFG or solo. What’s the point?

6. For an mmo, there seems to be very little structure. It’s like, instead of having 10 or 25 maximum players for content, and having lots of it, there’s just random world bosses that any number of people can do, and then 5 man dungeons. So I’m supposed to go to a timer website, then every 15 minutes go to the next world boss with 300 people and get a chest of yellow items that I sell for 20-25s on the trading post and just gather more ascended materials I don’t need and can’t sell?

7. And that’s it? Just do that?

1. Races are cosmetic so you don’t even need to know their names. I’m sure even you would know that you have: Plant, Molemidget, Kittycow, Generic, and Generic XL. Given time if you like the game you’ll probably learn the names. In wow I still don’t know the names of the wolves even though I played them when I played alliance to prank gank my mates.

2. In wow I played all the classes to try them out before choosing one. It was very time consuming. In gw2 I played all the classes in the mists to get a feel for the one I liked, it took considerably less time. If you are absolutely incapable of experimenting, looking at the skills and traits to figure out what a class can do, you can youtube it.

If you are “sitting in the back” in a dungeon you are being a dead weight and are getting carried. You have 17 skills at your disposable in combat as a ranger and can switch them between combat. You have buff skills to help your allies (which you can’t reach if you are sitting in the back). The person “tanking” the boss isn’t tanking it, he is soloing it with the dead weights only making the fight go quicker. The fact you haven’t figured out that you could be doing so much more to contribute to a fight is what people are talking about with the trinity conditioning.

3. Mindless button mashers get destroyed in both games. If you are spamming your interrupt whenever it is up, you are doing something wrong. If you are using your burst without the proper build up, you are doing something wrong. If you are using your heal randomly, you are doing something wrong. If you are putting down a water field when your leap/blast finishers are on cooldown, you are doing something wrong. If you are dodging auto attacks instead of real threats, you are doing something wrong.

If you are doing these kind of things wrong, then anyone who is doing these things right will steamroll you. You don’t even know how to access pvp builds, so I doubt you spent enough time in PvP to actually meet someone with good timing. Join the unranked queue once and die a few times if you need proof. [PvPers will hate me for even suggesting this]

I think as long as you accept you’ll not being playing in high end tournaments and avoid (the nastier of) speed runs you can probably get any class to work for you fairly well if reaction time is the main problem.

In many cases AI based builds can help a lot as a crutch (minionmancer, ranger, etc) but I wouldn’t go that way unless you find that you really need it.

I agree. How they handle traits 3.0 is a key factor whether to buy HoT or not for me.

Snow.2048

I like the new trait system.

It gave me meaningful enhancements between level 30-80. Before the trait system, I simply power leveled because leveling was boring.

Be honest Blade. Leveling is still boring once you get your first 80.

Look at my signature. Count how many characters I have.

Most of them are created after the new trait system has been implemented.

And you did not find the repetition tedious?

I don’t find the repetition tedious.

If I really need that specific trait or I have empty slots, I go to the profession trainer. I only need a minimum of 7 traits. Every other traits is cosmetic.

Traits are a distraction and a side quest away from the repetitive heart quests.

So what you are saying is that you DO NOT have every trait unlocked on all 28 of your characters? Because each profession has 65 traits not just 7 and “anything over 7 unlocked is just cosmetic.” If you don’t have all 65 traits unlocked then you can’t experiment and find new and better builds for yourself.

Runeblade, would you be happy with a trait system that is less specific than the current implementation?

See, I get where you are coming from, having a set list of tasks to do does help get through a task, even making it less tedious. The fact you enjoy repeating the tasks makes this system more valuable to you, which I am glad for. But I personally dislike it, and would much rather a more general line. I would like to propose to make it complete event in Ascalon/Shiverpeaks/Whatever, just for the first tier (bam choice and fillers) and let the higher tiers be more specific so you actually have progression and work to earn. Would you find this change acceptable?
(Sorry if it feels like I’m targeting you, I just want to see how to find a middle ground with someone who thinks differently from me, based on what I think the issues are)

To no one in particular, the change has, as said above, killed experimentation on newly made characters, which is my fun. I luckily have at least 1 of every class grandfathered into the system, so all it did was kill my desire to make alts for tedious repetition (I tried and I failed to get 100% trait completion before leaving the characters to gather dust). It takes away from the learning experience by gating off an essential part of character building, back loading the learning curve instead of smoothing it out.

Thief’s Leaping Death Blossom is the worst. Body Shot comes close but at least there’s that one single moment it’s useful in wvw when you’re in a huge zerg and someones trying to run to the gate. With many classes even bad skills have use to throw out while things are on CD, but these are skills you always have on your bar and never ever touch. That is straight up awful.

Best skill is Guardian’s Banish because it’s ****ing hilarious ever time I use it in PvP. Every time.

Daily guardian today, I spent the whole game in mid banishing enemy players out of the fight. Twas beautiful =D
Edit: for best effect, hit the asura.

Mesmer sword 3, it only works about 1/3 of the time in my experience, which sucks because its an awesome control option when it does work.

My personal favorite skill would be the Arcane heal from the elementalist. Blast finisher damaging heal is very interesting for a 6 option.

I think I want to try this build out, I have trouble finding a necro set up I like even when heavily customizing to my playstyle…

I do have a question though, can you show me the perma protection calculation, I’m not quite seeing it…13 protection on a 40s cd and another 15ish seconds on a 60s cd when you are below 50% hp.

Is the burning (1 per 60s at 50% hp) worth giving up for say Earth runes to remove the 50% hp limit on the protection (less protection up time from rune effect but increased protect duration all around)?

Traits Part 2

Snow.2048

Just my experience, but most new players I’ve played with don’t even know what traits are by the time the hit 80, an most haven’t unlocked more than 1 or 2. From my point of view it seems like you’re just delaying all the things that they need to know about character builds until 80, making the whole process a long drawn out tutorial without a skip button (they can’t afford traits).

But I do like the idea, its just so poorly implemented. Full map completions for low tier traits is ridiculous for example. It should build up instead of being so random imo

Trait unlock is not random – this is big quest http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Trait_guide

Looking at that do you seen any logical order of progression there? Its just chores tacked onto traits in my eyes tbh.

And getting to that point, the fact that I have to keep that wiki page open while leveling to tell me which maps I need to do and what to skip if I want a good amount unlocked traits without paying tons of coin and skill points (something I would see as a reasonable considering the target audience is new players, who without 7 good traits that don’t conflict choice wise are not fully functional even if they are level 80) is definitely not an aspect I like in game myself.

How are new players supposed to know that they need to go out of the game to find a order of the traits (since you list it as one big quest) they can get. Ingame they can’t even see the parts of the map the trait thing points to, and have only a rough level range nearby the blur to see if they can do it. And what if they just go into Brisban Wildlands, thinking its the place to go after say Metrica Province? They just “wasted” their time, because the trait “quest” wanted them to go to Kessex Hills for their level 15-25 region. Or say they did Kessex, but if they arn’t looking for traits actively [and why should they be if no one told them to do it?] why would they know they should go do Diessa Plateau as well having beat a 15-25 already (and Brisban is closer if they arn’t ready yet)

Way too many limitations. The unlocks for minors are in several cases more work than the unlocks for top tier traits, with only level differences, so there isn’t tiered progression. The amount of traits a typical new player ends with at the end of a leveling experience (judging from my experience of only 5 people [another 4 quit before getting to the end] so take it with a grain of salt) doesn’t allow any building or experimentation which I would argue is a key feature of the game.

I like trait hunting, but its current implementation is not good.

Also with dyes, if you had double dye on your alt, as soon asd you logged in to your alt, you would get an unindentified dye for every double dye you have.

Sure, but they just had to look at the current state – when they decided to do dyes account bound, they had the possibility to implement an algorithm that counts the amount of double unlocked dyes and gives you the same amount in unids. No need to look into something from the past at all.

What I thought was weird is that they didn’t use the fashion achievement the emperor which already tags each individual piece (soulbinding the same piece multiple times does not progress the track iirc) to do something similar to the dye system. I bet it would be a large amount of effort to have done so, but it protects player progress. And player progress is usually something you don’t want to destroy if you want to retain (“casual”) players.

That said, despite all the potentially lost progression from these updates, they have made this a much better game for certain audiences, as well being a natural and strong improvement on the original transmutation system, a large selling point.

I just hate all this resetting which makes me feel like we’re still in beta, even though I am a strong proponent of increased polish, and hope they try to minimize the damage done. But I’m rambling now and off topic, I’ll stop here.

Comparrison between GW1 and GW2

Snow.2048

I sure everyone will get the other points but Ardenwolf’s first point about the terrain blocking I don’t particularly agree with it being worse, but different.

GW1 was more of a strategy game imo, and as such the terrain played an important role, and allowed for more interesting plays. In gw2 its fun to bounce around freely, but I can just run through an army of enemies without slowly and hit every one of them by waving a sword back and forth, so their positioning doesn’t matter much.

For me its more game breaking that mobs get a free pass card with cliffs and we get blown off in gw2 than we can’t step over a slight ledge in gw1, but neither are pleasant.

In short, when I want to a game with more planning and thinking, I play gw1. When I want to duel in a fast paced and pretty fight, I play gw2

I’m actually pretty neutral to this one thus far. I really need to see what happens to cooldowns of skills giving it and or amount of stacks given by a skill, its not one of the changes I can make an educated guess as to the results will be with the information given.

I can go and make assumptions that the stacks will be too low and cc will suddenly become hard to counter, or that it will be too high and weaken cc but that’s not really helping much.

If someone has info as to max stacks and how many stacks several example skills give, then I might be able to better judge…

You can bind um to whatever you want, and the symbol underneath changes (I did it to match a gamepad setup I was using for a different game.). Its in options (esc to open)

The order might be interesting to change but if I’m binding I just put them in rising CD order anyway for as far as possible so I can quickly scan my cooldowns if necessary. And I end up binding them according to cooldown length anyway to match this.

That can be turned around as well.

We bought the coin knowing full well that the content would not be available at all times.

Not quite.
One was deliberate destruction, the other is buying something that you knew would have pauses, but based on the pattern of releases still expected to see regularly. Whether or not those affected by this are right isn’t what I’m aiming for, more that the whole I deleted my character after spending 2k gems is an invalid argument.

(I personally think that just opening it for a while would have been the best solution, or making it a yearly event, but that’s a different matter)

I spent over 2000 Gems on permanent harvesting equipment and outfit skins that I lost because I deleted the characters before those items were switched from soul-bound to account-bound. I’m not whinging or demanding refunds, and that content will NEVER come back. Your precious box will return, and your token will still get you in. The self-righteous sense of entitlement you project by spouting rhetoric like “robbing customers blind” and demanding refunds does not help your cause.

So you choosing to delete these things knowing full well they would be lost is comparable to buying something that was rendered irrelevant?

They made a point of it not having a chat, and I agree with it. You can emote to other teams, and I am not very happy about how they can whisper me as it is.

The main reason that I think all of this is because of what I use WvW for, namely as a means to get my poor carebear buddies addicted to the drug that is pvp. It removes one of the nastier side effects, namely 12 year olds using every bad word they ever heard, while providing a silent antagonist that requires skill to defeat (sometimes). Its like they are playing pve, except the things they fight are more interesting to fight.

They then find normal pve to lose its shine, as the things there simply arn’t challenging anymore, so they wvw more and more. And at one point they rage because they got hit by a zerg during a good 1v1 for the upteenth time, to which I promptly mention that pvp has set team numbers…

I agree with the general consent that it’s not that bad as it fulfills the purpose of long term goals better than most things in this game. I am still not happy about it myself, and wish they hadn’t gone back on their initial plan of BIS being easily gained by anybody.

That being said, it irritates me that people still claim that it is only 5% better, or this many stats better, ergo it is not an increase or that it is not BIS. Come on people, an increase is an increase, no matter how trivial you find it. You can say its trivial if you like, but don’t try to distort the facts.

The way I look at it,in a really good fight, the fights you give your best and barely won or lost, 5% is the game changer. And that’s why I’ll eventually get it…eventually.

Gs signet ranger. I played this a lot and it’s very similar to your description. Signet of the hunt when mauling. Kitty for extra might if you want more umph.

Just saw you prefer ranged, ranged is taxed in this game, your nasty bursts are mostly melee. That said, the improved longbow of the ranger might be worth looking at, use quickening zephyr for those sudden bursts

Game Updates: Guild World Events, Megaservers, WvW

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Snow.2048

Without server identity, what happens to wvw orientated guilds? How do they recruit? Why would wvw orientated people even bother choosing a server that’s not wvw orientated, if they are thrown in a pve melting pot anyway?

What’s going to happen to large scale role-play?

Are the events going to be able to scale to zerg levels? I’m thinking betas all over again in some maps.

Hard core boss events, and the community around them?

The lag? Some of us are on low population servers for a reason.

And what about the languages?

A month later, a quick review of the issues that affect me personally.

My small little server had about 8 medium to “large” (for our server) wvw guilds. We now have 3 medium guilds, the rest migrated servers. They had absolutely no reason to stay on a lower bronze server, because the server only exists in wvw now. Of those remaining, the numbers in the guilds are dwindling as well. The most active of the “medium” guilds can only field 20 people at a time on a good day lately. We can’t recruit efficiently to shore our numbers, and we can’t rally our pvers to our cause (because balthazaar knows what overflow shard they’re on)

The zerging is an issue, but seems to be wai as Anet scream their own praises.

Lag is the bane of my existence. I lag out daily now, having to restart the game client occasionally, loading screens can take minutes. And whenever the zerg gets anywhere near my position, my fps takes a major dip. At least we don’t have any massive zergs in wvw, so I can play there! Just me and a buddy or two, its almost a co-op game.

The language fix seemed stupid, but with all the trash talking in the map chat on megaservers, its kind of moot as I just ignore chat more often than not. On the brightside, I can say something ridiculous and get a major audience and a good uproar whenever I want. Thanks for supporting the troll inside of me.

All in all, I alt f4 every time I play, and I play less and less. Probably just going to call it a good run while it lasted. But before I go, my power of prediction seems strong n this thread, so let’s try again! I predict wvw will recieve a full eotm treatment due to “the success that the megaserver and edge of the mist has had. Also, to commemorate this moment, the new Culling armor is available in the gem store! Look like a generic character model whenever you want!”

Reenact certain major events in the living story like the Marionette, the destruction of Lion’s Arch (both Escape from LA, and the Battle for Lion’s Arch), the raid into the Tower of Nightmares, the invasion by the Ancient Karka on LA, and the chase after and slaying of the Ancient Karka in Southsun Cove.

This could be done through hologram technology (like that used by Moto for his Super weapons, or the hologram projectors used during Dragon Bash).

My best is 1v3, zerk/divine pre april patch. Against a elementalist, mesmer and upleveled warrior. But I guess its a 1vX. Downed the ele in less than 5 secs, faked a stomp, hit the mes so they backed off, stomped ele, burst down warrior and stomped, finished the mes in a rough 1v1. To be far the warrior was just trying to hundred blades me, so he wasn’t even a consideration really..

I used to do 1v2 decently if the two players had no synergy (quite common in wvw).

1v1 I was really good at, but my build was so cheesy it was probably one of the contributing factors to the crit damage nerf. =P

It doesn’t work quite right now because of so much burst lost (I can probably make it work again if I really wanted but I’m taking a break from ranger atm), but I was running Greatsword/Sword.Axe 30.25.15.0.0 (signets), hitting 7k-8k mauls as opening (pet hit 3k-3.5k) hilt bashed to daze, weapon swap, signet of hunt, PoS for 3.5kish, auto attack 1k per hit, PoS came back, 2.5kish. Full exotics, ranger runes, not full trinkets XD

Usually interrupts their heal (people panic hit that button so often), they need a teleport or invulni on their bar for reliable escape. It basically doesn’t work on most well played classes, (and skilled players with a cool head and good twitch skills can get out the way) but surprise helps a lot. If I can make someone pop their heal before they even hit me, I feel bad kitty

Buy it a the trading post, most foods sell for about 1 copper because there is no demand and a lot of supply. It doesn’t matter what kind if you only want the xp bonus (its not really that huge that you have to worry about, 10% to kill xp, which is the lowest xp income by far), just make sure its for your level and you’re set.

If you want I can probably send you some in game as well, just drop Snow.2048 a mail and I’ll send you some cheap stuff I have laying around when I get on.

This is Zerg Wars 2.
You need not communicate with other players here, we auto block players of different languages for you.
You need not form communities with other players. We will form temporary ones for you.
You need not recruit for your guilds, for you shall not know if other players are from the same server as you.
You need not ask for new things in the gem store, we will provide an ample amount of skins while changing existing items in order to refresh you and alleviate you of your soul destroying cash.
You need not look for players, for we will place you with as many as possible.
You need not learn to play, the zergs will kill for you.
You need not think, you will zerg.
Zerg now.

And always “Hace A Nice Day!”

Hail and hark!

I am Snow, a warrior from the Mists, who has come bearing grave news pertaining to the stability of the world itself!

There is trouble in the mists, and the different shards of reality are colliding! I have travelled the breadth of the lands, and it is clear. The mist invaders, those evil mockeries of ourselves, are everywhere and claiming everything as their own! These fiends that hesitated no moment to slit the throats of good men now take the guise of warriors that seek justice in the world. But be not fooled, fellow warriors, for these demons will still murder yourself eagerly if not for what meager security our numbers and presence of the dragon minions provides!

However, there remains hope! We must use the very nature of this strange occurrence against it! Unite under one banner for but a brief moment, demons and men alike, to cast the shards apart, and restore the uniqueness of each shard of reality, so that every man knows man and every beast knows beast!
If we do not do this, the Mist War itself will spread to the world, not in its form of glorious combat, but in the form of treacherous poisons and foul play. If this were to be allowed to happen, I see no end to the madness and misery. If you, brave warrior, thought that the controlled war was terrifying, then wait until the day comes when the war spreads to every inch of the land!

We must cast this evil back into the pit from whence it came. And we must do this, together!

Do this unthinkable deed once, and we can return to blissfully murdering each other without it having morale repercussions, and no longer need fear that our fellows in arms are actually snakes from another realm!

Dear ArenaNet,

Thank you for making Guild Wars 2. It has been a source of enjoyment to many, many people.

I am deeply concerned with the diminished roleplay aspects that this update has brought to the game.

As suggested before, please give us a roleplay checkbox somewhere and consider it when balancing us.

It seems to fix so much:

  • People who want to RP, and who want to see others doing so, get balanced to places where other people have opted for the same thing.
  • People who don’t roleplay, but who enjoy reading it, also tick the checkbox to be balanced accordingly.
  • People who hate it and don’t want to see it simply don’t opt in.
  • People who don’t care simply don’t opt in.

Roleplay is the only reason I picked Tarnished Coast when I first started playing. Before I ever bought the game, I did research to see where the roleplayers were. I saw that my best luck was on Tarnished Coast, so that’s where I signed up.

Me picking Tarnished Coast was me clicking the Roleplay checkbox. Okay?

That was me opting in.

Please don’t take this away from me.

Please tell me you understand this complaint.

When I read their vague wording in the quotes I posted earlier on this thread, I was worried. But what they did to you guys was even worse than I feared. I’m still rooting for you guys though, whats an mmorpg without RPers!

Game Updates: Traits

As part of this approach to making traits more approachable, we’ve pushed back the level at which the different trait tiers unlock for new characters in order to better pace the early game experience and to add more meaningful character progression from levels 30 to 80. Starting with this feature pack, new characters will unlock the adept tier at level 30, the master tier at level 60, and the grandmaster tier at level 80.

Hmm, I can understand the confusion… Tbh, I just won’t run dungeons with my not 80s because the stat difference is even larger. Oh well.

edit: I like the system, its just a year and a half too late

Snip

Yeah, but why this solution in particular?

And is it in the cities too? After they said they would not do the cities in the beginning!?
Edit: Ah no, after rereading the quotes, they never said they would leave cities alone. It sounded implied (I have the quotes), but of course, it wasn’t.

Welcome, to GW2, europe.

In all seriousness, why was this necessary again? And have you thought up a solution to these problems yet (Many people have been posting about it since you announced this):

Without server identity, what happens to wvw orientated guilds? How do they recruit? Why would wvw orientated people even bother choosing a server thats not wvw orientated, if they are thrown in a pve melting pot anyway?

What’s going to happen to large scale role-play?

Are the events going to be able to scale to zerg levels? I’m thinking betas all over again in some maps.

Hard core boss events, and the community around them?

The lag? Some of us are on low population servers for a reason.

And what about the languages?
