What do you guys think of 30/15/0/0/25 with beserker gear? Is that the highest dps possible? Not worried about survivability at all, just want to maximise dps.
Yes it is.
Agree. And w/level 80 Pizza, you can extend your Condition Duration quite nicely.
I run P/S with 0,0,30,30,10 (speedy kits). It’s a condition damage centered build that is VERY tanky. For Conditions to work, you have to survive! You must outlast your opponents. And this takes patience. It’s not flashy, it’s not glamorous and you aren’t going to single-handedly take on a zerg and win — but it VERY much has it’s place in group play, such as WvW or dungeons. You’re typically that last one standing and healing others.
If you’re just starting out or not yet at level 80 give yourself a break and slow the game down by tanking up. This allows you to learn to cycle thru your kits and combos while under fire. Engi takes practice, practice and more practice. Spammers or those looking for short cuts need not apply.
I’ve played the heck out of this game. Started on the day of the head-start and never looked back. I remember a friend was trying to rope me into Final Fantasy XIV – so I indulged him and played about 15 hours or so. Then GW2 came out. I remember trying to explain to him how it was an open-ended world, was all about exploration and with no “instances”. Quest were done on the fly, and you could join with others at will and that when others showed up, you were happy to see them. And WvW was a wonderful. Probably racked up over 1,100 hours or so.
Sadly, all that GW2 promised has now be neglected by Anet. For the last week or so, all I’ve done is log on for my Daily. I’ve got almost 50 laurels and can’t even work up the excitement to buy anything.
WvW is a dead-end. I figure, why bother? I can tell withing the first 4 hours what place my World will finish in. And rank means nothing any more with the random match ups.
I recently loaded Oblivion again (for Gods sake) and can’t see doing much more in GW2 than check in to see what direction things are heading every now and then.
Living World has killed this game for me.
Pro. It’s a very funny profession that makes you smile.
Con. It’s very Trait dependant, so it doesn’t really shine until you have access to all kits and Traits (ie Level 80). Low level play is certainly doable, but it’s not a cake walk.
Just some observations:
1) I haven’t seen myself losing or going down lately in WvW due to Confusion.
2) Are Engi’s calling for it to be Nerfed because it makes us too powerful? What’s OP for an Engi is Noob level damage for most other professions.
3) Since day one, if I have Confusion stacked on me, I either cleanse it, or wait it out. This makes the Rune OP? Lol. LTP and quit spamming.
You have really good values for both Critical Chance and Critical Damage, but you’ve chosen to not creatre a typical Static Discharge build. Are you aware of this type of build?
If you have to ask, then you don’t deserve to be Asura, sniff.
It’s just sad that this question was even asked. Asura, of course….
I would say to not mix them. Carrion with Superior Rund of the Undead stacks PVCT in very good numbers. The only time I would try to increase my Crit Chance is if I were also increasing my Crit Damage.
By selecting Rabid armor, you achieve 51% Critical Chance but you have 0 Critical Damage(!). This is a flaw with Rabid armor. Look into Carrion armor. It’s PVC. Add Superior Rune of the Undead for Toughness and Condition Damage and you’ll increase your base Condition Damage to around 2000.
Criticals do not help with Conditions.
You are correct about lack of auto attack on land. It’s always been that way and it’s something that takes practice to become proficient in. It’s been discussed before. Some like the way it is, some don’t.
In Options, you can select “fast cast for ground targeting” so that it will auto-cast where your mouse cursor is. Also, you may or may not know that you can double-tap 1-5 and it will throw the grenades where aimed if you don’t prefer to select “fast cast”.
I’ve never really understood Rabid gear. I have Carrion (PVC) and run a Condition build. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, I know. I only have 8% Critical Chance….
….but hey, I’m all in on Conditions.
IMhO Rabid, which has both Precision and Condition Damage, just doesn’t do any one build justice. Maybe a hybrid? which I have run before, but it was not very satisfying.
Post your build, dang it! : )
Cesmode,
If you are afraid of looking goofy, then Engi is not for you.
We have a belt buckle that fires a surprise shot, an acid bomb that makes a sound like a bowel movement, a battering ram that pops out of God-knows-where and we smack people with a pry bar. The list goes on and on. Playing an Engi is all about being ridiculous.
Embrace your inner-goofball! I dare you!
I run a P/S Carrion build with 0,0,30,30,10 (10 being Speedy Kits). My Kits are EG, Bomb, Tool Kit.
This build is a tank in WvW and can stand up to just about anything.
If you are new to WvW, you might find the Tool Kit Magnet to be invaluable. Pulling people off walls or catching them as they try to run away never gets old. And the Tool Kit shield is great with a short CD.
I’ve been using a Logitech G700 since last October, it really helps.
I’d say it’s that the Veteran Supervisor at the camps in WvW never chases you….
I don’t know what that means : “via an item”. I learned Master Tuning Crystal by discovery…
With no disrespect, I’d say the opposite is the case. I started as an Engi with from the 3-day head start and have played one ever since, and I’ve never seen more Engi’s than now.
In the early days, we were a fun, but horribly bugged profession (we just didn’t know any better). Now, with changes from Anet, we are a viable (and still fun!) choice.
How do I craft Potent Master Tuning Crystals? I have 400 Artificer, and can craft Master Tuning Crystals…. but how do I craft the Potent Master Tuning Crystals.
If some kind sole on this forum helps me, I promise to never post another snarky, sarcastic, rude, crude or immature response ever again.
(and if anyone believes that, see me about a bridge in Brooklyn….)
Your build is pretty un-focused. Pretty much the current Engi meta is either a Condition Damage or Static Discharge build. Your on your way to a SD build, with decent Attack and Critical Chance – but you undermine it with the Mesmer runes. Try a full SD build and see how that works for you? Trait for Static Discharge, use Ruby Orbs, and Rifle Turret for the tool belt skill?
Engi has come a long way since day-one. So hats’ off to them for making us a more viable profession.
But turrets are still a big disappointment. Such a neat idea – but no execution or follow thru…
Per your original post….
I know people will chime in about what a wuss I am, and that I need to LTP – but Engineer is not the profession that I would recommend for WvW roaming. I’ve got over 1,600 hours on my Engi, and am pretty darn good, but it’s a tough class to learn and it’s very unforgiving to mistakes.
HGH means Human Growth Hormone. It’s an Elite Trait in the Alchemy line that grants 20 second of Might with any use of an Elixer. The Alchemy line by default grants Vitality and increased Boon Duration. And Might will increase BOTH Power based damage and Condition Damage.
An “HGH” build is a Might based build, with good amounts of Health – so it’s kind of “tanky”. But it does demand that you invest heavily in a Trait line (Alchemy) which is mainly full of defensive traits. That’s the trade-off.
Shield is an acquired taste. It took me many months before I had the nerve to seriously give it a try in WvW. Now I use it all the time.
It’s extremely situational. You might only really use it 15-20 times over the course of an hour, while the 4 & 5 Pistol skills will be used much more.
For me, it fits my play style (tank, Condi Damage, Condi Duration). When I’m running a Shield build, I tend to think through things more carefully – it slows my mind down, and forces me to think. I don’t just fall back on the 4 & 5 Pistol skills. I monitor my play more, and focus on using the right kit at the right time (I run with EG, Bomb, Took Kit) and I focus heavily in the Inventions/Alchemy Trait line.
OP, you made the day of many an Engineer!
An Engi with Tool Kit and Shield has THREE shield options that will outlast a thief’s initial burst. But as Aegael says, the Engi has to time it perfectly to avoid significant damage.
It comes down to skill. We can’t spam any of our skills (ahem).

Invest heavily in the Alchemy and Inventions line. Focus on survivability and condition damage over time. For conditions to work, you need to outlast your opponent(s). Use Runes/Armor that focus on surviving.
A survivor build is not “sexy” in the sense that you aren’t going to be dropping 6k burst-damage — but it is viable, and rack up the kills.
And practice, practice, practice.

Engineers shine at level 80. Until you reach that level, don’t judge them.
Also, Engineers are just FUN! And that’s what this is all about, right? There is no more versatile class and the kits they have are just hilarious.
Thieves are the only profession that really give me a headache in a 1 vs 1 setting (I’m an Engi). But anyone who runs around with only 14.9k in WvW deserves respect.
Really? I main engi and have no problem with any thief in a 1v1. Condi specced engineer will kill thieves really quick. Along with P/S, bombs, toolkit and the right traits you apply so many conditions that they’ll never outcleanse your damage. Thieves are so easy to predict even just circling keeping your back from where the thief stealthed and counting for stealth duration makes it really easy to counter a thief. Only thing that can screw you up is a good P/D thief but they rely om CnD so kiting and dodging them at the right time will screw them up big time. + blinds are great.
The only reason you don’t have trouble is because you are such a kitten stud! I bow to your greatness, oh great one.
Thieves are the only profession that really give me a headache in a 1 vs 1 setting (I’m an Engi). But anyone who runs around with only 14.9k in WvW deserves respect.
Thieves are good in roaming, WvW situations. Otherwise, not so much – especially with all the nerfs.
As an Engi, I’ve gotten where I can, if I expend the time and effort, take out around 90% of the Thieves I encounter. But for the most part, I just ignore them. Relative to their contribution to their World, they just aren’t really worth the effort. If I see that I’m up against a perma-stealth thief that doesn’t do much damage, but will take awhile to bring down, I just let him go on his way to slap yaks and noobs.
On very few occasions (very few) I notice that if I switch from say Pry Bar to EG in the middle of battle, sometimes I will whack the enemy with the EG. Is this what is happening? Are you in the middle of switching?
@Eviator
“I gots ta have ma bags. "
+1
“An alternative to them if you would rather stack health instead are runes of the necromancer (although forgoing toughness for more hp usually isn’t a good idea unless you have alternate sources of toughness/armor, ect)”
That’s what I find too. Carrion is PVC, so the added Toughness AND Condition Damage with Runes of the Undead balance out nicely.
And yes, Runes of the Undead are the hidden gem of the game. I think I’ll go stock up on them now, before their price goes up….
Edwin,
Like Yamsandjams says, Condition builds are VERY viable in WvW- but you have to be all in – no half-kittened builds. To effectively build a Condition Damage Engineer, you will want to focus on upping your survivability by focusing your traits in Inventions and Alchemy. I currently like to run Carrion Armor with Superior Rune of the Undead and a P/S. This build can take a tremendous amount of damage while throwing out conditions left and right.
Having “survivability” allows you to outlast opponents. The way it happens is, you’ll be telling yourself “I’m not doing any damage, I’m not doing any damage, I’m not doing any damage” and then BOOM your opponent collapses like a wet paper sack while running away.
There’s not much more fun then seeing some poor SOB panicking when he suddenly realizes that he’s got five active conditions on him , he’s exhausted all ways of removing them, and they just keep coming.

I run P/S and focus on Condition Damage wearing Carrion Armor with Superior Rune of the Undead. Most of my trait selections are in in the Inventions and Alchemy line. I have over 26k health and can take a tremendous amount of damage.
The ability to last a long time allows for the Conditions to do their damage. I may not kill fast in WvW, but I can tag many enemy and provide a great deal of support in battle.
This is sort of the anti-Zerker build.
I would say that P/P or P/S should focus on durability and conditions and you should armor up appropriately.
So what is your main weapon? P/P, P/S, Rifle? Which weapon(s) you prefer has a TREMENDOUS impact on your play style — which in turn can guide your selection of armor and runes.
A P/P build that does not focus on Conditions will most likely be a Static Discharge build. It does work, but you will be something of a glass cannon. Try 20/20/0/0/30.
Remember that Condition Duration and Condition damage are part of the Explosives and Firearms traits. You buff them by selecting traits in those lines.
Also Berserker gear with Superior Rune of Melandru can help mitigate Condi Damage that you take.
P/P Berserker is a fun build, and Great for PvE, but tough in the current WvW environment.
“….to finally take down my most illusive foe: the D/D ele.”
Sounds like something from Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom.
I just date myself…
The key to running a Condi build is to be able to survive long enough for the Condi’s to work. So make sure that the armor you select has some toughness and/or vitality. Also, Superior Rune of the Undead is a pretty good and economical selection for a Condi build.
I would avoid traits in Fire Arms, and focus on Explosions, Alchemy and Inventions.
My preference is Carrion armor for my Condi.
OP, no one cares if you solo.
Thieves and mesmers are the only two classes that I have seen lead a zerg around the map and still manage to get away. This is just plain wrong. Being outmanned 5 to 1 (never mind 10 or 20 to 1) should mean you die. Period.
Yes it is indeed plain wrong. What on earth does a 20 man group have any use for hunting a thief or a mesmer around the map? Did their collective intelligence drop a notch, or 9000 notches? The hunt for lootbags sometimes get utterly kittened.
Any group that cannot stunlock kill a thief in stealth need not bother.
Exactly. The only time a Thief bothers me is when I see 4 people break off from the group and chasing him over half the map.
Just leave them ALONE. Let them play their little ineffectual games of hide and seek. They don’t really matter in the big scheme of things. I can’t imagine the mind-set that would derive enjoyment out of playing such a powerless profession. Picking on yaks and Noobs…. Oh boy!
The key to dealing with thieves in WvW is to just ignore them. They don’t really contribute that much to their server’s competiveness. They slap a few yaks and cull some Noobs — and in large battles and they are usually the first to go down, or they just run away.
Too many people get too worked up over the least effective profession in the game.
Don’t go human. I did. I always regreted. Finaly I created a new engineer because human engineers always look baaaaaad.
You callin’ me Ugly?
Ummm…..
Berserker works well in solo PvE. It kills quickly. But if you are just rolling an Engineer, it will be awhile before you settle into a build that you can “focus” on. The Kits are very important for build-focus — and it takes awhile to “earn and learn” them.
Carrion is PVC. Love it. Add Superior Rune of the Undead for Toughness and additional Condition Damage, and trait in the Alchemy line, and you will be unbeatable.
Asura, Asura, Asura.
Next question?
