I’ve thought of focusing on Chill as well. I often use Superior Sigil of Ice on one of my Pistols in P/P builds. Chill is one of those conditions that you MUST address in WvW. I hate when my little Asura does the “Chill Waddle”.
I could have been less of an kitten – sorry Xel. P/P is a viable build and enjoyable one.
Is this for level 80 WvW? Or PvE roaming?
“I have tried going a few different builds for con, not so much on the engi, mainly because I find the engi pistol skills really stupid. Personal opinion, deal with it. They are fun when your solo roaming, but the moment you enter a group even of even a dungeon, your about worthless.”
The pistols are MADE for applying damage to groups – this is not even debatable. The rifle is made for one-on-one roaming.
Best yet. You are trouble.
“HGH is just a trait. You can avoid it with this same build as long as you prepare for the inevitable drop in damage…..”
How much would you say Might contributes to your Condi Damage? Since it does affect it.
My main objection to HGH is that I (personally) don’t want to have to monitor boons – it just doesn’t fit my own play style. But you are putting out a Condi Damage-per-Tick that is just devastating and impressive.
I run a hybrid SD/Condi build using P/P with Elixer Gun, Surprise Shot, Tool Kit – and Rampager Gear. 20, 30, 0, 0, 20
I’ve been melting people in WvW.
45% Crit Chance, 50% Crit Damage. 1078 Condi Damage (stacked up to 1,400 w/Sigils) and 60% Condi Duration (with Pizza).
I have SO been trying to avoid going the HGH route. You don’t make it any easier….
Congrats.
The trait Sharpshooter in Firearms gives you a 30% chance to cause bleeding on critical. Adding a Superior Sigil of Earth is, imo, redundant and not that valuable. Your not increasing the chance to apply bleed by that much. I forget how much you increase the chance, but it’s not by 60% (someone correct me if I’m wrong). So I would change that sigil out.
I’d vote for reduced cool down.
1. If a zerg size exceeds 15 players, then it’s visible on the map and can be dynamically tracked by it’s enemy.
2. If there is a 25% population imbalance, then Way Points do not go down.
3. Disable “Right Button Select” — but wait, that would benefit all game play, wouldn’t?
I played about 4 hours of Charr something or other (after leveling my Asura Engi to 80) – and it felt like I was walking in mud.
Did you drop the Acid Bomb in the Light Field?
So how would you sum up the difference needed for builds in PvP vs WvW? I’ve never done PvP — but I’ve run probably a 1,000 hours in WvW.
In WvW, most of my 1 vs 1, 1 vs 2 encounters last about 30 seconds or less. I’m either soloing or chasing someone who breaks off from the main battle. I find that you have to apply an insane amount of damage and bring down your opponent quickly, or you may draw a crowd of enemies that will out-number you (and you’re already probably in a damaged state).
(cough cough overcompensation)…
Worth reading just for that sentence : )
lol, I just did what the OP is talking about. I just re-capped a Sentry outside of our Keep in our BL, and a thief came up to see what’s what. I dropped the crate on him. Flame blast, net, magnet, pry bar, acid bomb. No more thief.
Do I feel guilty?
Hahahahahahaahahahahahahahaahahahahaahahahahah
Tool Kit’s “throw wrench” is also a major damage-dealer for SD builds. I often chalk up close to 4k in damage — and it’s on a short cool-down.
Shoot from your belt buckle? Check
Whack someone with a pry bar? Check
Bop someone with a battering ram? Check
Fumigate and Acid Bomb? Check
Burn’em with a Flame Thrower? Check
Drop a Supply Crate on them? Check
Honestly, the Engi is the most fun, hands down. Nuff said.
I’ve lately been running a hybrid P/P SD build with Rampager armor for Condition Damage and using pizza for Condtion Duration.
My Crit Chance is 45%, Crit Damage is 50% Condi Damage around 1300 and Condi Duration at 60%.
Enemies have been melting.
Lots of what they are doing lately is a backwards philosophy instead of breaking things in an already broken class they should be buffing the things they want us to choose more often.
Anet made a business/economic decision to to “de-buff” an ability in a particular class rather than “buffing” ALL other classes in response to a perceived OP.
I have to imagine it’s easier (and less costly) to change the code of one class rather that all of the others.
But is this a viscous downward spiral? Will all classes eventually be reduced to the lowest common denominator? (And if this does happen, won’t Guild Wars 3 be on the market by then?)
I have this horrible suspicion that 8 or 9 months from now, all classes will be flinging Rolaids tablets at each other, in between beta-test weekends for GW3.
Compassion? Engineers don’t know anything about compassion.
Did you drop a supply crate during a fight? If the turrets shoot something, it puts you in combat. Otherwise, I can’t recall ever experiencing it.
Never thought of that. I’ll see if that is the case. Thanks.
We Engi’s never get tired of seeing Thieves die!
Every now and then, in WvW, I get to a point where I just will not regen. I run away from battle and wait, and wait, and wait, and wait…. and nothing.
I’m going to sound like such a noob by asking this — but what are all those buffs? The wolf, bear, etc? Is that a racial thing? (I’m an Asura).
Don’t listen to the negative comments. Fun video and thanks for posting.
@Knight,
I agree with your sentiments about the fact that our only real 80 lvl map is aesthetically depressing. It would be nice if we had others to farm in. It used to bug me more than it does now, but I get your point.
I don’t follow your comment about “main pathway”. There is a path: following groups to set up camps, etc. as you progress to Arah.
I imagine that the game is different now then it was when I started playing it (at the three day head start). At the time, people were actively running around, learning new things and trying to understand the mechanics and game play, etc. And there were MANY people actively participating on the lower levels, and you sort of progressed with them through out the game.
Every now and then I visit the lower levels and there is not much going on. I can see where is this off-putting to someone new. It’s pretty sterile.
It works well. You select trait “Static Discharge” in the tools line and rely on firing weapons from your tool belt, such as the supprise shot and throw wrench. These not only do damage themselves, but are also accompanied by a lightening bolt that does damage with the SD trait. The damage is “Power” based (and not Condition based) and the higher your Critical Chance and Critical Damage, the more damage you do. It’s something of a glass cannon (although if you use Melandru Rune with Berserer Gear you get some protection).
I first learned of it from these videos.
1) Higher health on turrets, and no penalty CD when they are picked up.
2) Lower CD on Shield.
3) Make it easier to switch heal skills during combat (ie from Med Kit to Healing Turret).
Have you tried a Static Discharge build? Berserker armor and weapons, high Critical Chance and high Critical Damage?
Are you aware that Anet added some options that allow you to adjust the number of enemy players that you can see at one time, and also their level of detail? It’s in Options, under the Video settings.
Are you aware that when this game first released i could run it on ultra with 100+ people on screen and my fps remained playable? Even on LOWEST settings (including the ones you mentioned) i still get 3fps in mass battles. Anets problem not mine.
I was just trying to be helpful guy. No need to get all huffy. And it is your problem, because it doesn’t happen to everyone.

Great video Lert.
1. When an enemy group size exceeds 10, the group appears on the map — and it’s movement can be dynamically tracked.
2. Keep waypoints accessible during battles for under populated servers, when the imbalance exceeds 25%.
One of the things that is truly lacking in WvW is the availability of dynamic intelligence – which is probably the single most important thing in determining the outcome of battles.
Intelligence can off-set the population imbalance, and allow for a server to demonstrate it’s true skills and teamwork by decisively directing it’s resources and manpower where needed.
The issue of imbalance has more to do with the very structure of the Maps.
When they were designed, Anet had to assume that populations/participation would be statistically equitable over time. As we all know, this is not the case. The World with the greater participation will eventually win by the weeks end. Every time. Period.
At this point, the only way a World can move up in ranking is by hoping for a influx of transfers. No amount of team work or skill will make the slightest bit of difference, statistically, over time.
We need new Maps that acknowledge population imbalances.
Nice video. Makes me want to break out the FT again.
How do you instantaneously trigger the burst on the Healing Turret?
@aydenuited,
I didn’t say give up the Took Kit. Throw wrench is indespensible to the SD build. What I said was to give up the Trait “Power Wrench” for Adrenal Implant.
The EG is a suggestion to alter the OP’s style of play to a more supportive + ranged role – where using Super Elixer can help his teammates.
Also, I am a hypocrite (!) because I run a hybrid SD w/Condi Damage/Condi Duration build. But I also accept that I’m glass cannon-ey and am helping to put the WvW Asura Repair Guy’s kid thru college.
I’ve got close to 1,300 hours on my little Asura Engineer (95% in WvW these days). And I’m the first to admit that kits and weapons that at first glance appear to be useless, later turn out to be indispensable (I’m looking at you EG and Took Kit).
I run P/P in a hybrid SD/Condition Duration build with Rampager armor, EG, Rifle Turret solely for Surprise Shot + SD, and Tool Kit.
I’ve experimented with the Shield, but I just can’t get past the long Cool Down timer.
I measure the effectiveness of a weapon by how much I actually use ALL of it. I ran with the Rifle for hundreds of hours, but eventually came to realize that the Jump Shot was something that I rarely employed. Sure, I could stomp someone with 6k of damage, but I rarely did in the chaos of WvW. And I also didn’t like the self-stun of the Overcharged Shot.
I know that the Shield has an almost cult following- but then again, so do cults.
What’s it’s charm? How can you even begin to justify the long CD? Is if for Tanky Builds only? Or fast, mobile glass cannon builds. Or is it- as I suspect – that everyone that uses a Shield is a grade-A wacko?

Your Crit Damage is only 20%, so I would say that Goggles and the Static Discharge trait are not really good choices. You aren’t really a Static Discharge build.
I would disagree somewhat with Super Riceman about the Rocket Boots (although I don’t personally use it). It has a pretty decent Tool Belt skill (the Rocket Kick) which has a short cool down, and coupled with Static Discharge, can be a consistent source of reliable damage. However, in my first paragraph, I’m kind of discouraging your use of Static Discharge.
You pretty much just seem to be an Engineer with 22k of Health.
I’d say that you are leaving too many damage points on the table by not investing in Explosives. SD requires that when you do Crit, you deliver a lot of Crit Damage. Your Crit Damage (as I’m sure you know) is tied directly to Power in the Explosive Trait line. At a minimum you should be in the 2700 range of Attack Damage (if not higher).
Rather than self-nerfing your build thru traits, I would adjust your play style. Select Adrenal Implant instead of Power Wrench. Learn to dodge effectively, and hang back in the WvW group that you run with.
Maybe select Elixer Gun instead of Goggles. The Acid Bomb, when it Crits, is the gift that keeps on giving. I’ve seen it deliver around 20k damage in WvW spread over several people. Also, Combo Acid Bomb with Super Elixer as a support for your team mates and it creates a very powerful Retaliation Field.
With SD, it’s all or nothing! Don’t nerf yourself! Let Anet do that for you (did I just say that?)
I pity the fool that doesn’t play an Asuran Engineer.
I notice that your Condi Damage per tick averages around 145. Is due to the Might stacking?
lol, I quoted myself!
I pity the fool that doesn’t play an Asuran Engineer.
The Magnet can be affected by terrain. Maybe that is your problem? I notice this sometimes, but for the most part it works just fine. Also, different animals/monsters respond differently – not all are pulled the same.
Make sure you craft and consume Pizza. The good stuff extends your Condition Duration by 40%.
Add me to this list of people that wants Anet to switch some of their employees from writing code so we can “build a camp fire” — and address real customer complaints.
Does Dodge factor into your combat style as much as you think it does? I’ve never really associated the rifle/bomb/FT with a Dodge build. Speedy Kits is pretty much a given in WvW to move across maps quickly, but in combat, it seems most of your weapon/kit choices require that you stand your ground and fire — dodging would disrupt much of what you do.
