Yea great arguements man… Glad you took the innitiative to call me a whiny loser despite having absolutely no kittening clue as to what kind of person I am in a match…

Sorry to have offended you. I’m willing to apologize for using the word “whining”, because while you seem to get discouraged a bit too quickly, you came to this forum to constructively suggest an addition to the game and not to rant. Please forgive me.

I’ll maintain the sore loser part. You actually give plenty of elements that argue in favor of this qualification. You said yourself that when you begin to loose, instead of trying to turn the tables, you /sleep, which really is a bit rude for your teammates actually willing to play to win/try their best. Forfeit, in short games where comebacks are relatively easy to perform and every point counts, is bad sportsmanship. What is acceptable in chess is not in GW2: comebacks in chess are nearly impossible at high level because it’s so balanced and every strategy is known (and games take hours, not ten-fifteen minutes)

no kittening person on my team even had the innitiative to continue! – stop glossing over this freaking detail because it is huge!

Alright. I’m pleased you seem to understand the issue. If only ONE player has an attitude like yours, it ruins any hope of a comeback or a decent score. That’s why a forfeit system would be bad for the game. ONE bad sport, ONE sore loser, and a game you could have won or get 200 points in can turn into a complete defeat, -3 points in the LB (it doesn’t mean anything now, but maybe one day it will). Not only is your attitude irritating and disrespectful to your teammates, but it is obvious that Anet shares my point of view on the subject, since the entire idea of losing less points on the LB if you make the effort of fighting till the end was to discouraged such behavior.

Excuse my french, but I am kind of kittened off for the sole fact that you downplay me so much out of your own freaking experience… I have played 3.5k matches, I had my own portions of ups and downs, and the last thing I need is someone to tell me “But I had an occasion where it all became good, so you are a whiny kitten”

Your french was moderated, but I’m sure it was fluent. Actually, I gave only one example, because I need not more. If in only ONE case, you can turn a game over starting from a pretty awful situation, that’s a very good reason to give your best every game, in hope to reproduce this miracle. But with the number of games you played, you this is not a miracle: it’s really common.

Khylo is not a map that allows comebacks easily…

I don’t know where you get that from. Jebro and ChroNick joke every week in the Go4GW2 cup, calling it the “Battle of Comebacks”, because comebacks are relatively common on this map.

to try and even put the effort into regrouping after such a loss…

That’s the real issue here. You were not willing to make an effort. Recovering after a huge wipe and avoiding a snowball effect is really one of the things that make a great team. Did you see the WTS finals? The third game between oRNG and the Abjured was a perfect demonstration. Of course, you can not reach that level of coordination with solo players, but neither can the other team.

Just yesterday, I was duo queuing, and my team was completely wiped in the first team fight. 5 players at respawn. We were already losing by 200 points. I asked them to wait, and four of us attacked close at the same time (the 5th didn’t listen and died: there is always that one guy), then snowballed over the entire map. We then proceed to hold a tricap most of the game, and win by 500-300 without a boss kill.

I’m not saying that you’ll always be able to win if you try hard till the end. But you definitely will sometimes, and you certainly be able to get an overall better score in most games. Another thing: if you see the opposing team is much better than yours, try to moderate your ambitions. Sometimes, even scoring 200 points is a small victory. Most teams just want to win: if your entire team repeatedly attack your close, they will eventually let you have it.

This community… I swear…

On that I must agree with you. It baffles me that some people are such sore losers they won’t finish a game. You’re here to have fun and to challenge yourself! If you’re not doing it for you, do it out of respect for your team mates. I NEVER forfeits no matter how bad the game is going, because that wouldn’t be fair for the guys and gals playing besides me.

Haha, someday it’ll happen with a precursor though. It’s a sucky loot system anyway, you can’t expect people to spam a loot button in a fight because you got the chance of dying and losing it, who ever came up with that should be fired.

On the other hand, it encourages players to win! You dieded? No booty for you! The AoE loot has helped a lot.

How to fix the mesmer #balance

Posted by: Sorel.4870

Sorel.4870

If they want to fix mesmer, allow the clones to literally mirror the player’s actions towards a target. Think Zed from League of Legends.

That would be incredibly awesome. It would completely change the play style thought: with all these mesmers running around, it might be difficult to dispose your clones properly for a shatter. It will never be the case, but that would have been an interesting development idea.

Stop whining and play to win. If you’re outplayed, regroup your entire team in the spawn, then stealth → close point and try to reach 200 points. I don’t understand the fact that some players would quit playing if they start losing after spending five minutes in a queue. 350 points come-back aren’t that common, but 200 points come-back happen, and especially with the new LB, you’re encouraged to man up and fight till the end.

A class so good, teams need 2 of them

@MeTx

You’re a bit behind the meta imo. When the Abjured lost the WTS, the real weakness of the 3 celes + 2 zerker/condi was obvious to everyone: they can’t burst. I know that in NA the meta is still dominated by celestial comps, but if you look at 55HP Monks for example, one of the best EU teams, the actually use a comp with two bunkers and three dps. Celestial elementalists are still very strong, but we’re slowly shifting towards a meta in which you have to win fights quickly and snowball, and d/d elementalists don’t fit in that meta that well. We’ll see.

Add Class Icon to Leaderboard

in PvP

Posted by: Sorel.4870

Sorel.4870

so we will see then every celestial classes at the top of the leaderboard. especially engineers

Lawl. There is no such thing as celestial professions. I could bet my boots that celestial engineers are not the majority of engineers: turreter is the most common build in low/mid tiers, and rabid engineers are popular in every tier (though probably less than celestial). Most warriors find shout bow boring, and you see a LOT of other builds: some celestial (axebow, weird hambows), but also a lot of berserker builds in low-mid tiers, and the very popular sw-sw condi build.

Even elementalist: when you say celestial, it can be d/d or staff, and you run into a lot of scepter zerker, staff zerker and staff cleric. So I doubt you could extrapolate anything about the celestial amulet from the leaderboard.

Furthermore, the popularity of a build at the scale of pvp doesn’t determine “the meta”. Power ranger, minion master necro, GS meditation guardian, turret engineer are not considered meta (some of them are quite awful), but you see an awful lot of them in low-mid tier. And there is popularity: engineers is the least played profession in GW2, because a lot of players dislike the play style and the animations, while warrior and thief are played by a greater number. In pvp, the gap is less important (especially since engi counters warriors and thieves), but you can still see these preferences influence

tldr: I think the idea of seeing the favorite profession on the LB is interesting, but I seriously doubt you’ll be able to learn much from it.

Please do something about Turret Engis

Sorel.4870

Yesterday my friend and I queued up against a 5 turret engi premade from the same guild. When you see people resort to cheesy builds to farm ranked, it just feels so… wrong.
Nevertheless, it was the temple map so we won easily with constantly wiping them in team fight. But guess what, since their MMR is probably low yet they can hold at least 300 points against us, their rank points would advance no matter which outcome anyways.

That’s the only problem I have against this build. Sure, it’s a guaranteed win if the opposite team has one: let him on his point and wipe his team every time on the other points. But while this strategy is unquestionably optimal to win the game, the problem is that the turret engi’s team is able to score 200 points EVERY TIME, unless I decide to take a huge risk by rotating 2-3 players to quickly dispose of him (which I don’t bother doing most of the time, victory is what matters to me). So even if they loose against much better players (which is most of the time), they hardly ever loose LB points. That’s why before last week’s reset, the number 1 EU was a turret engineer.

The Making of Teams

in PvP

Posted by: Sorel.4870

Sorel.4870

There are two main team compositions that seem to work at the moment: 2 bunkers and three roamers, or 3 semi-bunker and 2 roamers. The first composition would typically be 2 staff cleric elementalist, bunker guards, cleric rangers or whatever you like. The roamers must have a really strong burst to be able to end fights fast. mesmer/thief, dps guard/thief, double dps guards are three good trios, the last roamer being a bit more tanky maybe, like a necromancer (less mobile but good condi burst) or a celestial engineer (condi ranger or power ranger are also possible).

The second type of composition resembles what the Abjured played before they were defeated in the WTS: three celestial classes that are semi bunkers (d/d eles of shout bow warriors), and two roamers (often including a thief). You can have a more tankier, extremely good in 1v1/2v2 comp if you only take builds that are good in 1v1 (cele builds except shout bow, SD thief, necromancer), but you take the risk of being out rotated.

The professions and build you choose to have in your team don’t matter that much, as long as you remember what ROLES they have to play. If you want to play a mobile cleric bunker but all you find is a really good ranger, give it a try! As long as the communication is good and the composition is smart, it could work (though you probably won’t win the WTS).

I’m not gonna look into each of your nonsensical proposals, but are you suggesting that canceling the GS auto is a problem? That’s an enormous cast time! You claim the thief/mesmer match-up is unbalanced as it is (and it definitely is), now imagine what it would be if casting an AA was a death sentence: during this 1s cast time, we can eat a whole burst, that mesmers can now negate using GS5.

@OP

I could say “l2p”, because that’s exactly what your thread is about.

However, I think more experienced players should sometimes share their (humble) knowledge. Otherwise, how are you supposed to learn?

Learning how to mitigate a burst requires fast reflexes, the right utilities and above all battlefield awareness. You’ll get the first only through hours of practice. The other two however, are easy to get right. Here are a few pieces of advice.

1) Have a “oh kitten” button. Everything that breaks immob, insta teleport, makes you invulnerable, or insta heals you. Really, all it requires is for it to be insta cast and mitigate the damage in some way, and gives a second or two to recover from your surprise
ex: Withdraw on thief, Distorsion or Blink on mesmer, Endure Pain on warrior, etc.

2) Be aware like Van Damme. If I had to give you just ONE tip to be a better player in pvp modes, it would be the following: have a key bind for “look behind”. Regularly press it when you’re moving, and don’t look at your map/inventory for too long on the battlefield. A shatter mesmer cannot 100-0 anyone if their target saw them coming, even if they stealth (their stealth is not long enough).

3) Play a bunker build That’s ok to be bad at 1v1s: most WvW players are (I’M KIDDING PLEASE DON’T HURT ME). Just do like us and play a PVT build. Only the best SD elementalist will be able to 100-0 your sorry kitten, but he has no stealth so with your new key bind you’ll see it coming and dodge.

Remember: even with this advice you’ll still loose against players that are better than you. While some bursts are arguably easier to pull off (ranger, PS dagger thief), the ones you seem to complain the most about take tremendous skill in their perfect execution (shatter mesmer, scepter elementalist), so if you die to those, chances are you just got outplayed. I hope that helped you anyway.

The good solo players were playing in teamq for a long time before the patch. No half-decent player liked the awkward silence you got every time you tried to discuss a strategy, and the awful rotations the soloq heroes called skill. You don’t believe me? Just compare the queue times you had in solo and team queue before the patch, playing solo. For me it was 12 and 3 minutes respectively. Your misplaced nostalgia baffles me.

If you add the fact that there is absolutely no reason to favor solo players over pairs or trios (you don’t see me saying “anet plz why not add duo/trioq gg anet u breking the game”) and find in yourself the humility to consider the fact that you sometimes loose because you’re not as good as you think and not because you’re facing a premade, you’ll see why your request is delusional.

Arenanet keeps trying to reinvent to wheel, just give us back the old leaderboards with permanent decay. It’s so stupid that they can mess up such simple stuff like this so badly.

Jeez, nobody ever thought of that… You know, the old LB was exactly that: strictly MMR-based: the higher the MMR, the higher you were on the LB. And guess what happened? Wannabe top players opened new threads every week to complain about a new player being able to reach the top 10 in only twenty games. Most of my first posts on these forums were about explaining to this very loud part of the pvp community why the LB was working perfectly fine, and that it was the best system for a game that was always careful about catering to the skilled, but occasional player.

If you read these threads, you’ll see that at the time my views were a minority. We brought this on ourselves guys. Sure, Anet should have known better than listening to the bad-at-math hardcore pvpers, but you have to realize that these forums are ALWAYS filled with whiners, no matter the chosen system.

After playing this game for 4 months, the most expensive item I ever got to sell was an exotic weapon that I salvaged to get a Superior sigil of Force (7g). I have done SW chest farm til I had 225 bags and got an exo spear and harpoon gun from all 225 bags. I have stacked PVP reward chests for all 40 tracks, twice and received no exotics when mass opening all with 300+ MF. I have done all the world bosses, everyday for about 3 weeks straight and I have literally only gotten 4 exotics, 3 of which are spears/harpoons/tridents. Best item was a 3.5g dagger.

I don’t know what else I am suppose to do to progress. It takes ages because I am not making money. I am doing the content consistently and persistently and getting nothing to show for it. It is beyond frustrating.

Try to do content you enjoy, and don’t worry about the money. I for example play a lot of pvp and solo WvW roaming, and the cash just comes naturally, a few silvers at a time. But yeah, you’ve been incredibly unlucky. I have maybe done only 30-40 rewards tracks in total since I began playing pvp, always with 80-110% MF, and have gotten numerous exotics, at least five ascended rings, two ascended armor chests, and three ascended weapon chests. For example, I was never, ever told that hunters “aren’t for dungeons” in WoW; whereas, I have been told exactly that, re. rangers, in GW2.

….and then, I do WvW and hear that rangers are bad for that, too, most of the time (from a reasonable-sounding guy).

Come on, don’t think like this! The design is fine! It’s just that certain players have a sad misplaced elitism or are don’t know the game enough to realize that every profession works, everywhere.

The speed-run elitist dungeon crowd (I know that most speed-runners are nice, but we all met these guys) fall into the first category. Well, guess what, even in a five ranger party, you’ll be able to be successful in the same dungeons, it will just take a few more minutes than on these record setup. And I’ll take a good ranger over a bad elementalist anytime.

Some WvW zerg players fall into the second. They have been playing GWEN for so long that they don’t realize that there are ranger builds that work perfectly fine in zergs. For them, you’re not really a ranger without a LB. Try a cleric/soldier build with GS/sw-wh, with regen traits, Healing Spring, heal on F2 and Rampage as One. You’ve got yourself a tanky melee front liner with good damage, three leaps, good access to stability (although only for yourself), healing everyone and giving fury, regen, swiftness and vigor to everyone in your party. It’s also a lot of fun: you’ll feel like a combat healer.

Obviously it’s more powerful than people are willing to admit, or they wouldn’t have hard switched from the long-running elixir utility.

They were buffed, so of course some people are now using it! If no one changed, it would just mean that the skill was still bad. People changing something in their build is a good sign! It means there is more diversity.

In addition, celestial engineer became meta. The way we played the game changed, and for some reason a build that was played only by engineer aficionados was duplicated by a lot of players wanting to fit in the meta (and who would blame them?). Slick Shoes is popular now for two main reasons:

- It was played on tournaments. People don’t always realize that in soloq, Elixir S is much more valuable, since an Elixir S rez is a lot easier to perform there than against a coordinated team. In a coordinated team, however, Slick Shoes can help finish down a target in a coordinated burst.

- A lot of these new engineer players are not experienced enough to play triple kit. That’s a good reason to consider taking Slick Shoes over EG.

I’m not saying the skill is bad. It’s good, but you still see a lot of engineers playing EG or Elixir S instead (in the last EU Go4GW2 weekly final, there were two engis, one with SS, the other with EG). That alone is a good indicator that the skill is balanced and its buffed just promoted a bit more diversity.

@Invoker

You are confusing three different things:

- PvP rank, which is only a measure of the time you spent in PvP (and a way to acquire cool finishers and titles).

- MMR, for Match Making Rating. In GW2, and many other games, it’s Glicko2. We could discuss of its merits compared to Elo (in fact, many people did on this very forum before the new LB system), but it is generally admitted that this is one of the most powerful system to establish a ranking in single player, 1v1 games.

- MM, for Match Making. I think that’s what you are complaining about. It’s an algorithm that decides the compositions of the team. If every team was a full premade, playing together all the time, it would be incredibly easy: just match a party with another party of similar MMR to ensure they have fun, then calculate the new MMR of both teams after the game.
In GW2 however, you can party with a party of any size and change your party composition at any time. The algorithm is therefore incredibly complex. The old system only took into account individual MMRs, tried to have a MMR global difference close to zero, and started the match. The new system includes pvp rank (low emphasis), party size (previously really high emphasis, recently tuned down), and naturally MMR. In addition, it tries not to stack professions into the same team, and to give you short queue times.

Why am I explaining all this? Well, just to show you there are multiple factors that are taken into account for you to find a game, and saying “I want only solo players” or “No player under dragon rank” or “Only one of each profession on my team” is unreasonable in a game with a low population. Furthermore, even in the very populated LoL, players endlessly complain about “noobs” on their team! The problem is also one of perception in that case, and of ego.

What can we reasonably hope for in GW2:

- Fine tunings in MM. Justin is constantly tweaking things to try out and have the best MM possible. When players complained about solo vs premade, he increased the team MMR increase for larger party size. What happened is nothing changed in soloq (the issue was a perception problem most of the time) and premade matches were horrible: ESL team against noob premades all the time! So he changed back.

- An increase in population comes HoT. After HoT was announced, we had a huge influx of new players in pvp. I expect it to be way worse comes the release. Be nice to new players! Don’t rage if you loose because of them! They can’t do anything about it, and in the end, they help the MM to get better.

-Profession-based MMR and daily profession fix. The profession-based MMR was one of the things I was super exited about these changes in december, but it never came. I don’t want to constantly be forced to play ranked on my thief or on my engineer because I perform much better on these professions. The daily profession is a problem in unranked, because it puts to much pressure on the “no class stacking” condition. I hope it gets randomized per account.

Sorry, it turns out to be a lot longer than expected. Hope it was useful anyway.

What's a pirate ship?

When I first heard the term pirateship meta, I thought it meant staying at safe range and pulling a few players from the other zergs with Magnet Pulls/focus #4 on mesmer, to focus them down. You know, like the grapples in a pirateship…

RNG is a numbers game, right?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Sorel.4870

Software RNG are not truly random, it isn’t possible to program real randomness, however they are generally good enough to fool us.

Everything you stated there is true. So why can’t you reach to the natural conclusion: the RNG system in GW2, and in every recent MMO, appears random, and the only explanation for patters is to be seen in our own minds.

Sure, you can’t have the best RNG in a RPG, where you have to roll a dice every move you make (every breath you take…). However, I know for a fact that a RNG able to have a series of numbers long enough to fool us demands calculations MUCH shorter than, for example, the particle animations on our skills. Furthermore, it’s reasonable to conjecture that Anet only uses one RNG, and applies it to every area of the game. So if the RNG is good enough that the damage you do with you skills doesn’t look like it has a pattern, your MF drops that you make a couple of times per day, have no chance to reflect a number generator pattern.

@coglin: could you please post your engineer build, or is it a secret (mp me wink wink)? I use my engineer mainly for roaming, but I would be interested in a zerg build.

What I’ve been using. Could take slick shoes instead of rocket….but I enjoy rocket as an oh $#!t I’m too close. Also, I use the p/sh because extra blocks.

Thank you! Just a question: why don’t you take one of the protection giving traits? Protection Injection and Protective Shield don’t work in zergs? I especially say that because you have 4 points in each of these trait lines, but with peculiar trait choices.

Could be a Lighting Rod s/d build. That’s not common. The leap would then be Ride the Lightning. Counterplay: use your stun-breakers wisely.

Necromancer heal during DS

in PvP

Sorel.4870

It’s either good in PVP or it’s not. PVE and wvw is another story, but by your own argument (coordination should be rewarded), the elementalist in your situation is coordinating to heal his teammate who was focused, and that should be able to happen, right?

Yes! But for example, a mesmer getting focused will have to blow distortion to get the heal. A DS permissive to healing feels like a free get out of jail card every time it’s off CD, which is often. I’m not sure though, and I’m certain that at most levels of play there would be no major consequences so hey, maybe you’re right.

Condition Builds just got buffed

in PvP

Sorel.4870

Its not a buff it just improves how conditions work. I could explain but I cba. The average case is unchanged.

This is correct. It’s a buff in terms of consistency. But it’s actually a very slight nerf for necromancers that knew how to line up fears to get an extra tick of Terror.

Not really. It’s overall a buff for every terrormancer, because you will still get that tick. Every other necro will as well, that the only difference. As a thief/mesmer, I’m sad that every thief/mesmer can now port to the upper ledge on Niflhel without standing on this narrow spot on the stairs where it used to work. But at least sw2 (thief) and sw3 (mesmer) work there now, so I won’t complain.

Necromancer heal during DS

in PvP

Sorel.4870

I mean, I see the logic. But don’t you think it would be a bit OP in a coordinated team? At the moment, when a player gets focused, he has to burn through long CD to be able to survive and get his team to help him. The change you suggest would mean that even if you land the most coordinated burst on the necro, all he has to do is pop DS and let the elementalist heal him. I know that necro is now one of the first targets in a team fight (low disengage abilities, high offense pressure), but the fix you propose seems extreme, in higher tiers at least.

On the other hand, it pains me a bit to see all these good heals wasted on a necromancer. I suppose in soloq, it wouldn’t be much of a problem.

Why do you not take it to PvP where there is no risk of you taking a spot that a player who wants to participate in the game mode doesn’t get put in queue? Or any of the other adverse effects your play style may cause to others in the population?

I don’t need to fear about that problem arising since I am on NSP. We usually don’t queue EB during the week and on weekend we only queue one map (most of the time it is EB). My choice of server was not random. I did chose a low population server because of what I intended to do.

Thanks for your concern.

Of coarse you do not fear the problem. You are creating and promoting the problem.

As much as I can appreciate your desire to have fun on a personal level, the fact that you are unwilling to aid your team when called upon, and only in what they consider the most dire of situations, is evidence that you do not care for the game modes purpose. Your behavior in this situation adds to the reason players such as myself, will leave a particularly server. you mentioned your servers population and standings in a negative way, when it is likely your desire to ignore your team entirely , has contributed to it.

Thanks for the constructive critism. Everyone is open to their belief. As for me… my team game is when I play with my friends. PPT is, as I said secondary. I do PPT like everyone once in a while. I just don’t make it my goal.

Maybe I contribute to the problem of my server being low populated. Who knows But as for myself (maybe I really am a selfish person :O ) I don’t mind NSP staying low pop. I like outmanned fights. Here are a few videos featuring some of my friends. This, is what I play Gw2 for.

I love how in the first video you kill that random asura necro and get a “Trash Collector” achievement pop-up^^.

Stab issue really a L2P issue

VR holding a tower against a much larger zerg back when stability not only blocked all cc but could be boosted to a longer duration than it currently can. Defending a chokepoint always gave a tactical advantage, but only to people skilled enough to play tactically.

Cool vid, thanks! However, while VR makes some very sweet bursts and moves, you can see for example at 4:00, when they are defending behind h bridge, that they drop a lot of CC fields when they see the zerg running through the Veil, with absolutely no effect whatsoever: no one gets caught in it.

All higher tier players

I don’t know if I’m really “higher tier”, guess not, but for me at least, unranked is a place I go to practice and to have fun on professions and builds that I’m not familiar with. When I queue for ranked, I try to always give my very best on the only four-five builds I play decently. Unless I play with four guild mates of course. I hope that answers your question.

New runes or sigils ideas?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Sorel.4870

I was thinking about it just yesterday. Yes, I would be thrilled add sigils that work on interrupting targets. There are sigils for stun, or rune of the mesmer which gives an extra daze duration. However, all these sigils and runes only work for one specific kind of cc: no love for the knock back, launches, knockdown, etc.

I would especially like to see a rune set revolving around interrupts, but power-based. It would be awesome for lockdown mesmers, s/p thieves and physical skills warriors!
