Specifically referring to SPVP, since there is only format, Conquest, you should inform players they are participating in a game of conquest against other players, not a game of just player versus player.

Players need to understand they are playing conquest first, and fighting other players second.

My problem with Healing Signet is that it completely removes an aspect of gameplay that all other classes must actively manage.

On that note, options 2&3 will lead you to more success. Especially, if u can pull off #2 well.

option #3works, but you will feel your soul slipping away at times. I have a warrior build for runnin orbs, and it is unstoppable at runnin orbs, but it crushes me soul to just run back and forth all match

Lux laid it out nicely. The only thing I can add, is that if u want to attempt to carry, the best thing you can do is, play a bunker and rotate between nodes and try to hold them for as long as you possibly can. As most people are used to hotjoin tactics, where u grab a node and then run after other players.

The trouble for bunking though, is u are completely team reliant. Here is the example, you are holding your homepoint, you are under attack by 2 people, does your team come to your help? Or does your team do something stupid like fight off point, try to take far, stall in some other fight they can’t win? etc..etc..etc..

1 person cannot carry, in this game. U can try and work the conquest system, but if your team fails u and does not support u, u will just be outnumbered fighting 2v1’s or more all match as your team mistakenly abandons u.

The Proper title for PVP in this game should read, Player Versus Player in a Match of Conquest.

Simply calling it Player vs Player gives the notion that matches are about players fighting other players, promoting builds around survival or killing. When in reality it is Player VS Player in a game of conquest, where killing your opponent are secondary objectives to holding and capturing nodes and other map based benefits.

Spirit watch is the worst map in game, by far. It should be removed from competitive play. The mechanics of this map require far too much multitasking for the average player. 90% of the people who play this map do not know how to properly rotate on this map. And with the clusterkitten orb in the middle far removed from the conquest nodes, it is too easy to wipe a group in the mid as u have 1 guy capping the top. I have never been in a spirit watch that was a close match. They are always blow outs, based on which team has the most combined experience with the map.

I think having some sort of requirement for joining tPvp or Solo queues would be great. I know I hate getting new players in my solo q matches. I never tPvp with less than a team of 5 because of the random newb pugs.

Also, I feel preloading skills and armor on a first timer who enters the mist is a bad idea.

Instead when someone first enters the mist all their skills are blank, as well as weapons and armor and provide them with an introductory quest.

– Purchase a weapon from the Weaponsmith
– Purchase a sigil from the Weaponsmith
– Equip the Sigil
– Purchase starter armor from the Armorsmith
– Purchase Runes from the Armorsmith
– Equip 6 Runes
– Purchase an Accessory from the Accessory guy (forgot his name)
– Equip 5 Utility Skills
– Set your traits
– Visit the Hotjoin guy and play your first match

I know it seems kinda long but I think it will help out a ton of new players.

I am quoting this again, simply because it is the best idea I have ever seen hit these forums.

The only time I feel disappointed, is with mesmers and thieves. These 2 classes really contribute the least to conquest mode of play. They cannot hold a node and spend most of their time fighting off point, and even if they try to defend a node, in a 1v1 it will always result in a decap, if anything, just due to their mechanics.

For a mesmer or thief to contribute to conquest in a meaningful way, they really have to excel at their class. Which is unfortunate.

Completely concealing a player, or group of players is a broken mechanic, when many classes have no ability to do so what so ever. Plus, this would make the use of stealth much more strategic and give players the ability to counter.

I no longer want stealth, I want TRANSLUCENCY to be my class mechanic. When I try to escape with translucency, I’ll just go “You don’t see me, you don’t see me, you don’t see me…”

Every player should have to deal with the threat of constantly being exposed, just like every player should have to strategically use their healing skill…………healing signet……….

This is a brilliant Idea, kudos to you. I don’t think rank=skill, but rank is an indication of experience. A quest like this might be the type of eye-opener that helps new players get a better grasp of spvp.

Asura and "competitive" play

For pvp, when I am learning a new class, I usually start of as an Asura to give myself a little bit more room for error. And then once I feel comfortable, I may switch to another race if I feel like Asura isn’t thematically what I want that class to be like. Like, I started off learning mesmer on Asura, then switched to Charr once I got the hang of it. Same thing with Warrior, started Asura, then went Norn….

I don’t think it would be a terrible idea to give players the options to standardize models in pvp, be it human or sylvari, maybe even norn.

biggest problem with this build is that you’ll literally melt to any good mesmer/thief in 2 seconds if they’re not condi spec

i think that to correct this, is any ele build is going to literally melt to any good (fill in the blank) in a matter of seconds if their not careful…

the truth is, only way to make ele work is keep movin and hit them before they hit u, it is very team dependent on your team giving you room to breathe

Inspired by my urge to shine bright like a diamond and my undeniable need for fresh air, I came up with a few builds that are really working for me, and are quite fun, but I call them the lazyboy’s fresh air.

Diamond skin is really, really awesome, last night I was running through the graveyard, and there was only a bunker warrior, and he tried to impale me, but I got not one stack of torment, being full hp on this spec is awesome, cuz u can run straight over ranger traps and avoid necro deathshroud and all sorts of great stuff, so u gotta make maintaining your hp a priority

this is not a 1v1 fighter, unless u r forced too, this is a group fighter, and if u play right u will be smokin any fool who doesnt pay attention to you

I also call this the lazyboy, because i love armor of earth and arcane shield, but find their cooldowns to be WAY too long, so instead of taking them as utilities I take them as traits, and let my own fluctuating HP take care of it.

Diamond skin is very gimmicky, but if u can keep moving and keep your hp up U can really make the most of the trait, and when it does work it will bring a smile to ur face

and the burst of air 1+2+arcance blast+lightning flash, u can really hurt someone

and, I know some people hate divinity, thats fine, I took it for more hp, but ogre or scholar would probably be pretty sweet too

the thing with ele is, if u get jumped or teamed up on, u dont have many options but to run for help,

and and and and…focus earth 4 and 5 can get u some reliable stomps, especially earth focus 5, used at the right time=guaranteed stomps,

this is a super fun build, total glass, but I can assure u, it really does hit HARD

I’m goin to add this, cuz I don’t think some people understand the role of a bunker. As a bunker, your job is to hold a node, and support your allies. Killing enemy players is not a priority for bunkers—however, getting stomps is. so with 20 seconds of stab, u should get some stomps,

Second, the point of a bunker is to not win 1v1s, it is to hold a node until support arrives, this build will let u hold a point

third, pet AI is bad, that is why I don’t let my pets attack and only use pets that give AE defensive buffs, the pet is there to cleanse my conditions and buff me

4th, perhaps this regen would be kitten in a really high coordinated comp, where perhaps u have a guardian throwing out regens, however, this does not happen in soloq most of the time, so u will be a bunker amongsts many wannabe dps scrubs

5th, unlike a lot of other bunker builds, this one gives u mobility, if u r getting swarmed and have no back up, u can get to ur allies

6, if u were in a super good group, and wanted to bunk u could take the rez shout and condi cleanse signet on top of guard and still be a tremendous support,

hell you could use the warhorn and throw out more heals that way too, when used on your waterspring

the only thing that comes close to how solid this bunker is a guardian, no other class is going have a bunker build this supportive

but the point is to provide support to your team as well, with the other shouts u r constantly giving them regen and clearing condis too, not just to focus on myself,

guard alone would be fine for myself, but that’s not going to help my grp very much, they need lots of cleanses and regens….

u can make changes here and there, to suit your own needs, but this is a solid bunker, and yea it can 1v1 forever, with all the evades on s/d it is very easy to mitigate damage, and as a bunker the point is to fight long enough to get back up, or support your group, this bunker build also has a ton of group support ,

I ended up going with clerics ammy with a celestial jewel, there are changes that u can make, but I would go with at least 2 shouts, that way perma regen is easy to maintain and u can clear more condis that way, i also use the shake it off bear and the regen wolf, and dont let them attack most of the time

and u the vigor on heal trait would probably be better, but I was in the mood to stack regen like a fiend,

oh not to mention then 20 seconds of stability every 2 minutes, makes it very hard to move u off a point

guard is every 12 seconds, which gives a like 15 second regen……and cleanses a condition, and gives swiftness, if it was the only shout, ud still be good

Yeah, but with all the evades, and most of the shouts being on such a short cooldown, it is nonstop, and beneficial to your entire group,

and u r kitten near unkillable on a point if use the leafwolf and shakeitoffbear, constant healing and cleanse for group

It’s pretty sweet, regen up time is 100%, for u and everyone around u, with lots of condi cleanse, and plenty of evades, this is a pretty solid little bunker with some decent support for ur group.

I actually, really only use the signet (for aimed burst) whilst using the greatsword, because gs2&3 hit ridiculously hard, with the 150% damage, however, with this spec, it is easy to generate a ton of might and damage, and those birds will hit like champs, and hopefully proc a fire/air sigil too

And the birds, even though they arent the hardest hitting attack, it is an attack that is much easier to land than most that does a great amount of damage,
axe offhand does awesome damage, but is ……

For any other class, healing themselves is a considered aspect of their gameplay and strategies.

Warriors do not have to worry about this aspect of gameplay at all, thus allowing for more attention to be paid to their enemies.

It’s like every other class is playing 2 games at once, damage the enemy and actively stay alive. Warriors just get to worry about damaging their enemies.

The simplicity of the warrior allows for efforts to focused elsewhere, the obvious outcome is how effective they can be at engaging their enemies.

Just give every class a healing signet and remove this aspect of gameplay from pvp, imho.

Here is how I see it, Op.

As you play this game, you start off fresh and brand new, excited by all the buttons in front of you and what might happen if you push that button and hit a player with it.

For some, eventually this thrill wears off as you become familiar with the consequences for hitting your buttons—this does not happen for all. So, you OP, have gotten tired of just hitting buttons and tried to figure out how to succeed.

Congrats, this is a real pvp mentality. However, here is why you suck, if you in a hotjoin or yoloq do what is necessary to actually win a match, you will be punished by the rest of your team for not knowing how to actually win a match.

You will see what needs to be done and where, and you will go to do those tasks and find yourself alone and outnumbered 99% of the time. This is not your fault, even though you are failing. This is because the pvp player base at large only knows the basics of how to “win” a hotjoin.

Using competitive tactics only works with others who understand the competition at the deeper levels. Most of the time, in this game, the concept of tactics is irrelevant and it is just better to try and counter enemies with a spam of your own BS as they spam their BS at you.

I’ll add, it feels very cheap in a conquest mode, when my opponent can drop a giant fire field on the node, and I have no way to deal with it, if I wish to engage my opponent on the node. It is especially cheap when my opponent can drop this gigantic field, that I must deal with to engage in combat on the node, and then switch to a hammer and do a good deal of melee damage on top of that gigantic fire field. Even if I manage to boot the warrior off the node, the gigantic fire field remains a constant, unavoidable problem…..if I want that node.

Of course, I could just bail…but then I have 0% chance of capturing the node.

Play SWTOR, Engage in Huttball. Do what is necessary within the legal framework to completely steal this mode for yourself. Name it Moto-ball, Aetherblade Ball, Moto-cube (it doesn’t have to be a ball after all).

Traps are an important element in PvP, but as we see in Skyhammer, the traps must be handled with finesse or else the map is too imba for certain builds. As in Skyhammer there is just essentially a “falling” trap which can often be un-counterable.

Spam AOE, if u got it,

If u don’t, run and find a friend who has AOE and get them to spam it on them while you do your terribad single target DEEPS

I think the best thing to do is keep making noise about it and express how terrible their MMR system is and how bad it needs an update, I think they took an “old boys club” approach to their first MMR system and it is really demoralizing.

If everything was an insta cast, thieves and mesmers wouldn’t be a problem, the fact that most abilities, even most autoattacks have a cast time is why these 2 classes are so broken and problematic in pvp, GG having 90% of your gameplay negated by spammable de-target mechanics

I think stealth should just make players transparent, like a phantasm, that way we can still see where they are and predict their attacks

I would agree with you, but based on my experience for yoloq, I would go

1. Warrior
2. Engineer
3. Guardian
4. Necromancer
5. Ranger
6. Thief
7. Elementalist
8. Mesmer

I’ll add that in yoloq, currently, there is an over representation of warriors and engineers, with every match having at least one of each on both teams, and bad necromancers…there are so many bad necromancers in yoloq

I think the most dishonorable and worst aspect of conquest game mode is the incentive to keep a player in downed state, rather than stomp—when possible. I take no pleasure in “bleeding out” my opponent. I have already defeated them, no reason to make them sit there and endure me occasionally hitting their corpse and running around dodging their futile downed state DPS

I think conquest mode, creates the illusion of a linear game, and or linear objectives, in a game that is actually anything but linear. Creating an environment where most “simple” pvp`rs are oblivious to the actual non-linear nature of pvp in gw2.

Only players with less skill want match ups of fewer than 5v5,

this game is about group fights, not about how great your 1v1 spec is.

Lowering the number of opponents in a match will further promote 1v1 specs, and distance people farther, from group fight specs, which is already the biggest problem in gw2pvp. 1v1 specs are for trash players

I think penalties, are sooooo outdated. How about a mandatory, “Are you there button” and if you hit yes and complete the match you get a +achievement point toward an achievement of 1000 participated tournies that grants a really cool title when completed.

My favorite thing to do in spvp is Blast off on a fool, p/p is da way, da streets.

Sneak Attack+ Unload all you need for the thug life in hotjoins.

Utilities, it’s just important you take a signet and a venom, runes, sigils, and offset up to you, but keep`m street, I run divinity, zerker, fire and battle

So after hitting rank 44 I decide to check out some other aspects of the game to see what else I have been missing, and with all the SAB hype, I decided to try some PVE.

Not hard to get a group for SAB, seems cool to me. No where along the way is there any indicator of what I am supposed to do in there, I try and jump over some blocks, some clouds point their finger at me. I am dead. I leave SAB to never come back.

My friend says he is running a dungeon I have a character that is actually high enough level to get in to. I decide to try. We spend most of the time avoiding monsters and running through the map like cowards. Fight one boss, it can one shot me. I leave the dungeon and never come back.

I try to use the black lion trading company. The filters are so simple there is no way to find what I want and after trying to sell 2 things I get errors. I get bored and give up use.

Why does PvE punish me so hard? At least in PvP i get to play the game and only die when other players kill me…after A fight.

I think it is time for some non-conquest/sit on the node maps, if some other game can do 3-d moba style game play, then why not GW2?

In spvp, there is even room for temporary upgrade gear, for the accessories and rings, for the shop part.

And with so many factions, and monsters it’d be easy to come up with some good themed moba style maps!
