Gw2 most grindy game ever..?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Steel Fenrir.2791

I’ve been playing a lot of JRPG style games and old school CRPGs, made some fan fiction here and there, and made some games myself. I don’t mind grinding, as long as the grind feels rewarding (ie. makes you feel powerful bit by bit, makes you feel you earn some good loot, etc.). This is why I don’t like the changes they made with the trait system, or rather, how the trait points are distributed along the leveling up process. Also I wish they made some quests for getting legendaries, to add flavor and some backstory to them like some suggested. Not less easier to get as the current system of getting legendaries, but not as tedious and boring as right now.

Reclaiming Orr?

Orr had been underneath the sea for so long the land maybe too salty for ordinary plants (and thus an ecosystem) to thrive on. That is if plants in Tyria and its sea is similar to Earth. Plus I have a hunch that Zhaitan is still alive, albeit “knocked down”. Similar to the Branding by the Crystal Elder Dragon, there might still be malevolent magic left in Orr from Zhaitan’s corruption. Going to Orr is like walking to a minefield. One does not simply walk into Orr. Think of Chernobyl. It has already been years since the nuclear catastrophe yet Chernobyl is still uninhabitable, although animals live there, there had been evidence that they have been irradiated by radioactive materials.

Can somebody explain to me the logic behind the current trait point system other than trying to make it in tune with the Chinese version? At level 30 before, I could have had an extra 200 stat points, now I only have 50 extra stat points. At level 66 before, I had 560 extra stat points, now I have 400. Then it suddenly increases in pace as I get near level 80. Who the kitten designed this kitten? So let’s say we keep with the plan to stay in tune with the Chinese version. We get points starting level 30. We have 50 levels to distribute 14 trait points. Why do you make us wait too long to get the extra stat points (every six levels), instead of adjusting it to every 4 levels? What is it with level 66 anyway, is that the age of maturity where your character is supposed to lose his/her virginity, so that’s why you get 2 trait points by then? Is that the level you meet the z-z-z-zombeees in Orr?! Holy kitten anet. Can’t you make something as forgiving to the players as this:

Level/Points earned/Total points
30/1/1
34/1/2
38/1/3
42/1/4
46/1/5
50/1/6
54/1/7
58/1/8
62/1/9
66/1/10
70/1/11
74/1/12
78/1/13
80/1/14

Before, at level 66, you get 560 extra points, now you get 400 extra points. Using my system you get 500 extra points at level 66. Really, Anet, can’t you design something better? Do you even play your kitten, or just design everything in your head? Have you been playing your game as a level 1 leveling up to level 80 before finalizing this kitten? Have you tested this from the point of view of a real player, not from a point of view of a dev (or even an alpha tester) with insta-levels?

I’ve come to accept that certain builds are strong against MM necros, so my best resort against them is to avoid them 1v1 and change plans/objectives. Or fight in a duo/group instead.

What builds do you mean ?

From experience, it’s AOE eles, bomb engineers, and stealth thieves.

  • AOE eles – some have caught up with the act so they start to attack minions first before the necro himself. With minions having simplistic AI, they chase eles even in damage over time area fields.
  • bomb engis – like the AOE eles, minions chase the engi all day long. Thus dying in the engis bomb trails.
  • stealth thieves – remember, minions stop attacking and moving whenever they don’t see an enemy, so the stealth thief attacks, minions move towards thief, but thief disappears, so minions don’t do damage, then thief reappears in another place and attacks you, minions move towards the thief, but yet again fail to damage the thief (or do enough damage) because he disappeared again.

As for conditions, I use the staff’s 4th skill to transfer stacked conditions to the enemy. Sort of like a backfire move. Reserve the staff’s 4th skill only for condition stacking, don’t spam skills. As always in pvp, 50% of the time keep an eye on the battlefield, 25% on the map, and 25% on the boon and condition bar. I actually like people to put conditions on me so I could chuck it back at them. However, if they stack conditions, then stun lock you, then that would be a problem.

Use explode as a last resort, if you are sure you can kill the enemy with it, sort of like a spike damage. I usually use it around 10-15% of the enemy’s health. What I usually do is when the enemy is near death, I enter death shroud and fear it while the minions continuously whittle away his/her health. Double the fear if you are using staff (5th skill). Or use the flesh golem’s knockdown, just prevent the enemy from healing. I’m not sure about zerker gear on MM though, I haven’t tried it.

I think they get stuck, or the pathing AI makes them stuck. If you run far ahead from your minions then you suddenly attack, they also immediately start attack mode, that is, they stop and look for enemies or your target in the vicinity. They best way to remedy this for the meantime is to run away from battle until they start moving again and come near you, and then start attacking to trigger their attack mode near the enemy.

Homogenization of cultures of the races

Somehow I get the general feeling that many of the races are becoming homogenized, meaning they are starting to lose their racial identity. Could the writers please put emphasis on de-americanizing, er I mean, de-homogenizing the different races (if that is a term)? It could work in the environment of Lion’s Arch perhaps or you could emphasize it there, but please don’t homogenize the races in general, or rather be cautious that it doesn’t lead to that path. Keep them distinct, keep them interesting, keep their spirit. Enrich their culture if possible.

The Black Lion company will also sell permanent SAB tickets for 1200 gems, but using it will just teleport you to Gendarran fields. Blame it on Evon Gnashblade. They need to introduce big kitten draconic wings skin for backpack item for 800 gems, but when you use it, you get tiny, tiny bat wings instead.

I don’t think the leylines are reactive until you do something to it. From what Taimi said in EotM, it’s as if the leylines exists in a parallel dimension and a thin veil is separating it from reality (the physical world/s and the Mists itself). Sort of ghostlike in nature. Maybe not like the ghost enemies, it works similar perhaps, I mean ghosts might be the manifestations of residual magical energy, so you have to do something to “pull” the aether from the leylines into reality. I think the asurans found a way to do it, but they haven’t mastered to control it yet. And yet Scarlet hinted something about the leylines being connected to the elder dragons. I don’t know what she meant by that, if the leylines are being corrupted by the dragons because they are literally connected to it like an umbilical cord or something, or the leylines and the dragons are one like the source of power in the ancient city of Arah.

The real enemy of Tyria is Logan Thackeray and Jennah Doricson. Hidden underneath Divinity’s Reach is the Scepter of Orr, once carried by Livia of the Shining Blades and brought to Kryta for safe keeping. Speaking of which, I wonder though about its twin. The Staff of the Mists was “destroyed”, how could something so powerful be destroyed so easily? And where did the magic of the Staff of the Mists went? Or was the Staff of the Mists really destroyed? Is destroying the Staff of the Mists similar to how the elder dragons consume magic, that is the power from the magical artifacts are transferred to another?

I expect a more epic LS next season, LS 1 was just an appetizer, I kinda agree with some that LS1 seemed to veer from its original direction, I don’t think it was rushed, but it felt like a hodge podge of stories and events put together by glue. But I think in LS2, they will have a much better direction.

I like the tidbit about Taimi hinting on retrofitting her golem with Scarlet’s gun designs. During the marionette event, some complained that Taimi messes up warden 1 battle because of her invincibility (ie. unable to attack the back of the warden in some cases). One suggested giving Taimi a ranged weapon and a kiting AI instead. I don’t know if this was a direct change because of that or if they planned this all along, or if they would really change Scruffy’s weapon system.

toxic tower downfall – 2/10 zZzzZzzz
marionette event – 8/10, a little bit tweaking it’s perfect
escape from LA – 7/10 8/10, I did have some memorable moments with this update, bumped up after reviewing the content
battle for LA – 5/10, too little to do, not as epic as I expected, introduced new gameplay and storytelling elements

I think they do. I suggested during the marionette event that they should add some sort of mission briefing for the players, and not just rely on quest markers and the quest tracker on the right side of UI. On succeeding updates, they added scouts and they improved the mission briefing in map view. Or maybe that was already their SOP, I think there was a scout in the marionette event, I’m just not sure, but the mission briefing definitely needed some work.

The Gods doesn’t seem to be aware of the existence of the Dragons though.

I thought I was the only one who wondered about this…

That seems weird, or were they feigning ignorance to their worshipers? But why would they feign ignorance if that was the case? Do they know the dragons will rise once again?

I’ve noticed this too while playing the game with a female human mesmer. Maybe they could change the effects to [glass] [shattering] instead, that’s more gender neutral aesthetically if you ask me. Purple has been the identifying color for a mesmer, so I’m OK with that. But the effects for mesmer is too “soft and delicate” for me. I’m imagining, are all male mesmers effeminate, romantic, and spinning, whirling around in their tight pants, with a big bulge in their groin for illusion? Oh lawdy. That might be it since the near equivalent of mesmers in RPG terms are bards and enchanters, and they are traditionally the fancy or fabulous type.

@ Steel Fenrir, you cannot map “combos” to the buttons as ANET does not approve of “macros”. They support key bindings only, meaning one button does one function such as one of the side buttons mapped to the elite skill or heal skill, but NOT one button mapped to launch skills 5-4-3-2-1 in succession etc.

I’m using a razer hex naga myself. It can get confusing at first, but it sure as hell beats reaching out for the keys 6-0 on the keyboard (as movement can get interrupted when reaching for those keys, or even press the wrong keys in panic). I’m planning to try out and buy a razer naga myself. With the razer naga you could probably configure macros for skill combos to the rest of the input, but like I said it will take getting used to. Don’t buy it to feel like a pro though, buy it for it’s functionality. Don’t listen to others berating about multibutton mouses. For example, dodge is now binded to the space key in my keyboard config, since it’s more important, and the jump button on one of the side keys.

Wow, so he still has a warband? I’m under the impression he left (I skimmed through Evon’s past and I gathered there was some sort of betrayal in his past, that’s why I surmised he left his warband). But where are they now, shouldn’t they be protecting Evon? Maybe they are, but in the Ash Legion’s way (blackmail, assassination, probably even bribery considering Evon’s their legionnaire). They could probably dispatch Jirtta easily, but she is just a pawn of Kiel.

@darkace, I don’t know the equivalent english word of a clan based army haha. My family was involved in a clan war in the past, so that was what I was basing it. Being Charr that would be his warband, but I initially thought he left them. So it seems he still has some backup plan.

You’ve typed all this and yet you skimmed (and it still seems like you haven’t fully read it) the back story. Their plan is to control Lion’s Arch. If an Ash warband wanted you to know where they are, they’d tell your corpse.
I’d imagine his subordinates are hiding in plain sight; merchants, Lionguard, Locals..

Didn’t you understand what I said? I said I skimmed Evon’s back story so I thought he was no longer part of the legion because betrayal is no no in Charr society. I thought he “saved” the people of LA, and is now working independently from his legion or the Charr hegemony. Now that I’ve read about it further, I realize he was still following his orders but wants a different approach, and the Ash Legion’s presence is still a strong possibility.

I’m surprised Evon has no goons to protect him from this kind of intimidation, considering he is a Charr and was an Ash Legion operative in the past. Or maybe the Lion’s Guard was his bodyguard (personally financing them), he is relying on Lion’s Guard protection? Then again, even if he has a private army, there’s still a chance he could be betrayed, unless it’s a family/clan based army which he can trust.
