Dye Changes Feedback/Questions

https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/45889307-Dyes

With changes made to the dye system in April, 2014, how are dyes allocated and distributed?
With the updates to the dye system, dyes no longer will be specific to one character on your account. This means that once you unlock a dye on one of your characters, the dye will be available for use on all of your characters.

How will I obtain dyes in the future?
With dyes becoming account unlocks, the demand for dye will decrease and unidentified dyes no longer will drop as loot but still will be available from the Mystic Forge and select in-game rewards.

With the new dye system, how will dyes be unlocked?
Each dye that one of your characters currently has unlocked will become available to every character on your account when you log in with that character. This means that if Character A has Green Dye unlocked, it will not be available to the rest of your characters until you log in with Character A. Once you do that, any character may use the dye.

What happens with dyes that I have unlocked on multiple characters?
Upon logging in with a character, the game will check to see whether each specific dye on that character’s profile has been unlocked. If the dye already has been unlocked because a different character previously unlocked that specific dye on your account, the game will determine each instance where this took place and then will send you an in-game mail with an unidentified dye for each dye that was duplicated on your account. This means if four characters have Violet Dye, one will convert into an account-wide Violet Due and any other character that had Violet Dye will be sent an unidentified dye via in-game mail once that character is logged into the game. If you do not receive the in-game mails sent to your characters to replace duplicate dyes, check to make sure that your inbox is not at 10/10 mails. If it is, delete several mails (those identified with a white envelope) to make room for the delivery mail.

I have a question about Cultural armour. As we unlock skins for our account, does this mean that cultural armour can be used cross-species? Say a human ranger, can they use the sylvari or norn medium cultural armour? God, I hope not. I tried searching and couldn’t find this answer.

No. Species and armor weight class restriction will remain as they currently are on gear.

“When you unlock a dye after the feature pack is released, all characters on your account will have unlimited access to that color.

If you already have the same dyes unlocked on multiple characters, when you log in on additional characters, you will receive one unidentified dye for each duplicate dye already unlocked on your account."

So does this mean, in order for us to make a dye account unlocked, we must buy the color and unlock it, and if we already had it unlocked on individual characters then we get an unidentified dye for each old character locked dye of that color?

So we must once again purchase a single dye of every color we want regardless of how many characters already have it unlocked?

Well english is a second language for me, but I’m pretty sure what this means is: if Char A has blue unlocked all alts will have blue unlocked, if however Alt B also has blue unlocked and you login you get a unidentified dye, while still having access to blue.

That’s how I read it too. I think you’ll have to login with all your characters in order to unlock all their dyes across your account though.

Indeed, that was verified as how it will function shortly after that post was made yesterday.

For once, ONCE… I was actually online when the news hit. I immediately converted a large chunk of my spare Laurels to Unided dyes during the initial price spike.

So THIS is what it feels like to be able to profit from game patches.

Araleg’s story made me marvel at the sheer size of the GW2 market though. For that many dyes to disappear so quickly… Wow. It must have been a sight to behold.

People speak of having an event skin or some other event token to show off or prove (to others or themselves) that “they were there” and to remind themselves of a momentous Living Story event in the game. Despite not having an item or skin to prove I witnessed The Great Dye Run of 2014, this is the event I will think of when discussing momentous events happening in the world of GW2 to which I can say “I was there, I watched it happen.”

Skins are only unlocked to the wardrobe after soulbinding the armor item to your character. As the gem store armors are account bound skins, you must first use their initial free application to apply them to armor items that are soulbound to a character to unlock them in your wardrobe. Any future applications from the unlocked wardrobe version of the skin will require Charges to apply like every other unlocked wardrobe skin.

So use the skin on a soulbound armor item to unlock it in your wardrobe. The initial application of the skin will still be like it is now, free to apply to a piece of equipment.

edit
Thinking about it a little deeper now, I think that, despite their saying appearances of soulbound equipment will be unlocked in the wardrobe, that appearances of account bound equipment would also be unlocked in the wardrobe. So it is possible that just unpacking the skin set will unlock the appearances in the wardrobe, but you still have the free single-use skin items that get unpacked from the armor bundle to apply to equipment.

edit 2

“And if i use them now on an armor, after the wordrobe implementation the armor will have the skin applied or the original skin and the skin applied unlocked?”

If you unpack the skin sets and apply them to armors prior to the feature patch, just logging into the characters that have the soulbound armors you applied the skins to will unlock them in the wardrobe. As with all other soulbound armor skins your characters possess, simply logging into that character after the patch will automatically unlock all existing soulbound equipment skins that you have on that character in your wardrobe for unlimited future uses for Charges.

So, to make clear then, we finally got the wardrobe we all wanted because we are tired of using up space in inventory and bank for all our multitudes of armor skins and weapon skins. People still complain. We can now make ONE legendary and get the skin on all toons. People are complaining. We get account bound dyes… FINALLY, and people are complaining. ANet gives us something for the double dyes we have. Complain. Cost to “transmute” skin onto another toon… same “price” as it always was, but way more convenient. Complain. Have I covered everything???

Mmm…..yeah, pretty much.

Yup 1.97, all mine, 10,000s of them. Not only that, over night my wealth in armor/weapon skins has dropped by 4,000-5,000g due to the announcement of the Wardrobe.

Im the sort of player who just invested, played the TP but never really spent any of it, im still running around in exotics, dont have a single craft above 450. Looks like ill never get around to enjoying it before Anet takes it all away from me =’(.

100s of hours sat at the TP, for nothing, feel like such an idiot…

I do have to show you great respect right now for your level-headed reaction to this. So many people would rage and throw kitty cats at the screen and say they are quitting. You impress me. I know it is just a game, but many people seem to forget that all too easily and that there are more “important” things to get upset about or worry over in life. Thanks for not throwing any kittens at your screen.

Yep, just as it has always been. Think of it like, instead of melding two items into one using a stone/crystal, we pay one charge to have an appearance illusion placed on our armor to make it look like another. Want to change the illusion to a different one? Pay another charge. This is better in that we no longer have to destroy an item just to get its appearance onto our armor we are wearing.

But that is what we’ve always been doing…using stones/crystals to apply a new look to our existing armors. Nothing is changing in that regard other than consolidating stones and crystals into a single item, plus you do not need to destroy an item to apply its appearance to another item. This is much better in every possible way over how it was.

So can i use my Sunrise and Twilight to make Eternity and have access to all across my account?

Yes.
Soulbinding Sunrise unlocks that skin to the account.
Soulbinding Twilight unlocks that skin to the account.
Combining and making Eternity and soulbinding that will unlock Eternity to the account.

Actually, soulbinding Eternity may even unlock Twilight too according to their example.

Ah, that’s right. I had forgotten about the previous versions of skins being unlocked as well. Like unlocking the tempered spinal blade back piece automatically unlocks all lower tier versions of it as well. Good call.

Well yet another update that has really annoyed me, i was flipping dyes at the time, 1000g worth of them to be infact and all sold for 2 silver each. Had i had these in my inventory right now they would be worth around 15,000 gold at 30 silver each……argh.

Was that you that had a wall of like 350 of each dye at 1s 97c? Yeah, those and everything else below 30s were gone in under 10 minutes. It was crazy seeing the stock just melt away in front of my eyes.

Since we will be able to unlock skins across our entire account, this might be a dumb question, but if I, say unlock the skin on a female char, will the male equivalent version of this skin be available if I switch to a male char, or will I need to unlock for both males and females?

Just making doubly, doubly sure!

It’s just like grabbing an armor from the TP. No need to buy/unlock a gender-specific version. The armor appearance is automatic based on the gender it is equipped on/previewed on/applied to as it is currently.

So, to unlock my Phalanx armor (which I already bought to my Guardian) on my Warrior, I’ll have to buy either X Transmutation Crystals or Y Transmutation Stones?
Which will probably equate to around, I don’t know, 20 Crystals which is 1000 gems?

Since you currently have Phalanx skins soulbound on your guardian, the skins will become unlocked for use by all of your characters. To apply the Phalanx skin onto your warrior’s armor, you will need Transmutation Charges. 1 charge for each piece of gear (just like stones/crystals are now). After it goes live, if you have 3 Transmutation Stones they will be converted into 1 Transmutation Charge. 1 Transmutation Crystal will be 1:1 to Transmutation Charges.

So after live, all you will need to do is:

  • Log in to your Guardian that has the skins soulbound to it and it will unlock the phalanx skins to the account wardrobe
  • Log in to your Warrior and apply the phalanx skins from the wardrobe to each desired piece of armor (each piece needing a Charge to change its skin)
  • 3 T-Stones (when converted to charges) will grant 1 T-Charge
  • 1 T-Crystal (when converted to charges) will grant 1 T-Charge
  • Repeat for 2nd Warrior.
  • Total of 12 charges to outfit your two warriors in full Phalanx armor

So why are the dyes going up in price, I have 80 unidentified dyed so I should hold into them.?

Too late now, you missed the bubble.

Can sell unid dyes right now for 65 62 silver each. Lower than it was but it seemed to have gotten stuck at that area. Just now it is starting to dip again toward 58-61 gold each.

So anyone with laurels that wants to make quick coin, trade 5 laurels for 10 unid dyes and sell them. 90 unid dyes (45 laurels) got about 53 gold at 65ish silver per dye.

edit
Dropping fast again after getting hung up at 62-65. Looks to get down to 53-58 in a couple minutes.

Dye Changes Feedback/Questions

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: StinVec.3621

StinVec.3621

So do you think it’s a good idea to buy some of the more expensive dyes now so I’ll have em for all my toons or wait till after the patch? I’m thinking there will be a rush for dyes after the patch so prices will jump, and then an even bigger rise in prices since they will become less common. Thoughts? Buy now?

The rush will have started already. Ideally… buy last week.

The rush was mainly on sub-30 silver dyes. More expensive/rare dyes haven’t really budged at all. Blue Ice dye is still about 35 silver, Midnight Ice is still at about 20 gold. Unfortunately for anyone who was not already in-game this morning when the blog went up, there are no dyes available anymore for less than 20-23 silver now. Since the supply was all bought up expect them to slowly trickle back in as the high volume buyers let the supply creep back out to keep it at the 20-25 silver range.

However, seeing as we still have a few weeks before the change happens where unidentified dyes will still be dropping in the world, after this sudden run on cheap dyes is past:

  • How many will continue to identify unidentified dyes that they find?
  • How many of those identified dyes that are not ‘eaten’ will be put onto the TP?
  • Will the people who bought out all the dyes buy up anything new that gets listed to keep the price around 20-25 silver?
  • Will the supply of dyes getting placed onto the TP not really be as much as normal?
  • Will the supply skyrocket again to make dyes as cheap as they once were when the post-patch supply of unidentified dyes from duplicate colors get identified and put onto the TP?

FOR EACH duplicate dye already UNLOCKED on your account.

Right, after newly unlocking it to the account unlocks via using a new dye, old character dyes will be scanned and matching ones will pump out an unid dye.

Their wording isn’t clear enough. I will need a dev to elaborate or wait until patch day.

I’m a bit confused as to what you’re asking. But from my understanding…

All dyes on your characters will be converted to account-wide. Any duplicates across characters will pop an unidentified dye into your inventory (for a chance at another color). Any dye used after the feature patch is implemented is also automatically account-wide.

By the wording it uses, it sounds like you must unlock dyes again after the patch goes in. Then, after unlocking that color to the account, logging in with a character has its unlocked dyes scanned to see if an account unlock match is found and then you get the unid dye.

Example:

  • Midnight Ice currently unlocked on 10 characters
  • Patch hits
  • No previously unlocked dyes become account unlocked
  • Must buy and activate/unlock a new Midnight Ice into the account unlocked dyes
  • Log in a character that had Midnight Ice unlocked for it and you get an unid dye

That is my understanding based on their wording. Nowhere does it say existing dyes unlock that color for the account. It says unlocking new dyes adds colors to the account unlocked dyes.

So:

  • Act as if no dyes are currently unlocked
  • Unlock the dyes you desire (buy a new one and ‘use’ it)
  • Log in each character.
For each character that has a dye that you have added to your account unlocked dyes you get an unid dye.

Dev Blog: Changes to Traits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: StinVec.3621

StinVec.3621

The point being, nobody uses that degree of fine-grain control when assigning trait points. To do so is sub-optimal. It’s a false illusion of flexibility, when in reality, only the assignment of five points at a time is EVER used.
As that is the case, there may as well not be the individual points in between.

So you are saying that you do not allocate individual trait points as you earn them while leveling, that you do not allocate any trait points until you have earned 5 of them despite the fact that you forgo the increased stats you would gain by allocating every single point as you earn them?

If not, then obviously you agree that there is value in allocating individual trait points which was the entire point of my comment that you replied to.

I’m talking about individual points having worth, you are talking about builds or something relating to unlocked traits. You are making an argument that has no attachment to the subject of my comment.

They said single trait points are worthless.
I showed that they are not.
You replied talking about builds and demanding evidence of…something, I don’t know.

Why you are trying to bring up unrelated matters I do not know and I will not continue simply to please you.

I’m not sure how you think trait points are only useful in groups of five. In relation to unlocking traits, yes. However, trait points are quite useful singularly as each point spent increases the chosen stats of the area they are placed into.

Name me one build that doesn’t consist of trait assignments divisible by 5.

Why should I? That has nothing to do with my statement.
The comment I was responding to stated:
“Trait points are only useful in fives.
There’s nothing you can do with individual trait points if the total doesn’t amount to a multiple of five.”

I pointed out that there are, in fact, things to to do with individual points and they are quite useful individually.

There’s too much pointless busywork in GW2’s levelling system as it stands, and this just ends up delaying things.
The way they SHOULD have done things?

Okay, let’s start with the utter pointlessness of single trait points to give you a concrete grounding in the theory for my way they could drastically improve the levelling experience while reducing the amount of levels.

Trait points are only useful in fives.

There’s nothing you can do with individual trait points if the total doesn’t amount to a multiple of five.

This means that after 30, you only hit a true milestone every five levels.
Levelling in RPGs should be meaningful, but post-30, 4 in every five offer no sense of progression at all.

I contend that in order to make every level feel meaningful, they consolidate.

Currently, at maximum level there are a total of 70 trait points available. Nobody ever puts less than multiples of five into a traitline. Who has ever found a use for a 14/16/21/19 build?

I propose they reduce that number to 14 and that minor and major traits in traitlines only cost a point each.
Next, reduce the number of levels in the game from a mind numbing 80 to a meaningful 15.
You start at level 1 with no trait points, then gain one every level up until 15.
This means that every level is a milestone, unlocking a new ability for your character instead of adding mindless filler levels in between.

I mean, that’s essentially how it works at the moment, but it’s just disguised with pointless filler levels.

GET RID OF THE POINTLESS FILLER.

I’m not sure how you think trait points are only useful in groups of five. In relation to unlocking traits, yes. However, trait points are quite useful singularly as each point spent increases the chosen stats of the area they are placed into. Not getting them at each level will bunch up an increase to a leveling character’s stats to a larger jump every 6 levels instead of little increases every level. I do not like that change, ANet. Also, on the subject of levels, I personally do not understand why there are “levels” in the first place. They are not needed.

Can you also make sure you are running your game as an administrator?

  • Close your game completely.
  • Right-click your GW2 game shortcut and click on “Properties”.
  • On the “Compatibility” tab, check/enable the box at the bottom for your game to “Run As Administrator”.
  • Hit OK after making sure this setting is enabled.
  • Re-launch your game and see if the issue persists.

March Sales Gem Exchange Record

I’m still a bit surprised at how little of a rise there has been in the exchange rate over the last 24 days. I honestly would not have been surprised had it gotten up to an average of 10g per 100 gems even midway through the month. Here we are barely skimming below an average of 9g per 100gems and the month of sales is nearly over with. Thank you for the chart as well, Behellagh.

Can try to run an archive repair to see if anything got damaged and see if it helps fix the problem.

Check the game for errors and repair it

  • Close your game completely.
  • Next, make a copy of your Gw2 game shortcut and rename it “GW2 Repair” or to something that you will recognize it for being only for running a repair on your GW2 installation.
  • Now, right-click this “Gw2 Repair” shortcut and click on “Properties”.
  • On the “Shortcut” tab look in the “Target:” field, you should see:
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Guild Wars 2” or wherever you have Guild Wars 2 installed.
  • After the closing quotation marks in this line put a single space and then add -repair
It will look like this but with your GW2 install location:
    “C:\Program Files (x86)\Guild Wars 2” -repair
  • Hit OK after making this change.
  • Run this repair shortcut. Your game will run through a repair cycle and fix any damaged files it finds.
  • After it runs through, start the game using the normal GW2 game shortcut (not the repair shortcut) and see if your game can start up properly.

Have you tried to exit the launcher and re-open it to see if it will pick up where it left off properly? This normally corrects the temporary issue.

Track 49! Where Art Thou?!

Is it the song playing in this video?

If so, then apparently this “unknown track” had actually been asked about a month ago by someone else, but I didn’t realize that the track you are asking about was the same one they were asking about.

This “Unknown Track” is a softer, toned down variation of a segment of “A Land Restored” (Track 36 on the OST), but apparently this song can only be heard in-game. Not sure why it seems to have disappeared from the net.

Ah. Track 7 on CD3 would make it Track 49 of the OST.

Why Were the Blogs Pushed Back?

I am very excited also! I’ve been holding off on doing/using some things, and also preparing for other things just in case the blogs cover certain topics. I even have a brand new character made and set up just waiting to experience playthrough with the new changes when they go in to see how it is. Definitely some exciting few weeks here for us.

I’ll go find the link, but you might want to delete that character, because any character made before the patch (doesn’t matter what level) is grandfathered in to the old system.

Edit: here it is: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Dev-Blog-Changes-to-Traits/page/8#post3786437

Thank you for the heads up! I thought that only applied to traits and trait tiers that were already unlocked on existing characters in that they would not be re-locked or taken away with the new system.

Glad I didn’t fully outfit it, bind dyes to it (though that may not matter depending on how account bound dyes will work) or use a makeover kit to get the custom styles already. I think I will just leave the character as it is until the changes go in and remake it then as I want to keep this character name reserved…just in case.

Yeah, they changed it, I believe on Friday (a fellow forumer let me know in game). I have a feeling it’s due to preparation for people to complain…. Because if it is to do with account bound dyes, wardrobe, etc, then people are going to freak out because of their multiple purchases and the like.

But eh. I’m really excited for the blogs!

Yes, prior to a few hours ago?, the next to blog posts were to be released on the 24th, which is today (as of right now).

Here is a post of mine from 3 days ago on the 21st where I cited them as being on the 25th as that is what the Feature Packs page was showing at the time and is still showing. So it has been showing the 25th for at least the last 3 days.

I don’t see this change you are talking of as it has been showing these two for the 25th since the 21st as being the next blogs coming up:

  • March 25th – A New Way to Explore the Looks of Guild Wars 2
  • March 25th – A Colorful Outlook

Were they listed as being on the 24th prior to the 21st?

Yeah it was originally the 24th.

Ah, so the OP’s statement of “However these were both just changed to be tomorrow instead.” was not entirely accurate, as they were not just changed, but were moved to the 25th over 3 days ago. Thanks for clearing that up for me Lilith! I was like…uhhh, am I missing something?

(Solved) Game Redownloading Itself.

I will be away for some time so here is another thing to try/check in the event the above did not fix the problem:

  • Move your entire GW2 game installation from where it currently is (likely in Program Files) to a different directory (outside of Program Files) like: “C:\Games\Guild Wars 2”
  • After the directory move, once again ensure all files in the installation directory do not have the ‘Read Only’ attribute set in their Properties > General tab.

Ok. This should help if there was an issue with the non-archived files that the repair does not check as well as with any registry entries that may have somehow gotten changed.

What you’ll do is:

  • Ensure your game is completely closed
  • Browse to your game installation directory and move your Gw2.dat file to a different folder. It should be about 17.9-18 gb in size.
  • Delete the other remaining files in the folder (“Gw2.exe”, “Gw2.tmp”, etc.)
  • Download the Client Installer (21MB) from your My Account area at the top of this page and save it in your game installation directory.
  • Rename this “Gw2Setup.exe” installer file to “Gw2.exe”
  • Execute this Gw2.exe file. Windows may ask if you want to block it from running. Permit it to run.
  • Running the exe will generate a new Gw2.dat file
  • Close the installer prematurely once you see a new Gw2.dat file is created in your installation folder.
  • Delete this new Gw2.dat file
  • Move your old Gw2.dat file back into the installation folder from where you moved it out to.
  • Once again ensure all files in the installation directory do not have the ‘Read Only’ attribute set in their Properties > General tab.
  • Run your game normally and see if still insists on wanting to re-download the entire 255k (?) files for the game.

So you basically:

  • Backup your current Gw2.dat file
  • Delete the other files
  • Download the 21mb installer to the installation folder
  • Rename the installer to Gw2.exe and run it
  • Close the installer once a new Gw2.dat file is made
  • Delete the new Gw2.dat file that was made
  • Move your backup of your 17.9gb Gw2.dat file back into the installation folder
  • Launch your game normally and see if it still insists on wanting to download 255k files or however many it says
