How about this: let me unlock it with badges.

Say for 1000 badges or something I can get some sort of “Field Notoriety Award” that will allow me to show my name to other players.

Would that be okay with all of the hurt-feelings crowd?

NOT okay…. with any of us who don´t like to grind…

If you can’t see why this is not a minor problem, there is no point in arguing with you.

Racism and other forms of harassing only happens to a small percentage of the world population, but still that is not a reason to look the other way. More, in their days, those were not considered offensive or that could create harm.

Did i just read that 1337 talking down to someone is as bad as racism…. O_o

Healing rain, eruption, dodge. – This one is weird, I doubt that you can do this effectively in dungeons for example, it is too slow to do it as a reaction to a situation and you should have tha ability to predict future to cast it before the situation when this healburst is needed comes.
Also I had in mind something more offensive, like might stacking, this change effectively busted eruption in this, because you are no longer able to use eruption and the EA simultaneously with Lava font, which was pretty effective way to stack might and actually do some damage (because as we know, Staff damage sucks hard since the BWE great nerf). So therefore Staff is just more pigeonholed into support role (healing mainly) rather then be able to fulfill any other role, which is sad.
Shouldn´t casters (with low armor and HPs) be able to do some significant ranged dmg, like other classes can?

Healing rain combo is nice when you have beefier melee character around. If they engage mobs, they will take damage and will not move away right away. No need to be able to tell the future.
Also if you have people who know how to kite in a small area, it´s easy enough to tell them do so and use that combo.

Might stacking indeed is troublesome, but burning retreat has long enough field for eruption+dodge after it, i´m not sure if that´s the case without longer fields trait though.

I feel that the staff was lacking an interesting, specific skill sequence like that before.

Unfortunately no, it doesn´t. You just had more options of the interesting, specific sequences than now, because you were not forced to switch to Earth every time for the finisher (I refer to the fact that all of the EA spells were finishers, not to that bug which caused that every dodge was a finisher, to be clear, that was ofc hugely OP)

Wrong. It’s exactly because you must switch to earth, that you have a specific sequence now. With the old EA, there were no sequences, you simply created a field, and dodged, created a field, and dodged. You did not have to sacrifice anything for a specific sequence. It was very out there.

Any example of specific and effective sequence for staff? The need to switch into earth attunement basically made Eruption blast finisher useless in the combination with EA imho…

Healing rain, eruption, dodge.
Geyser, dodge, eruption, lavafont.
Geyser dodge, arcane wave for mobile targets.

Even only earth finisher is enough to make EA worth it for me again, support staff here btw.

Old EA was ofcourse significantly better, but new version is useful enough to make me put the extra 10 points in arcana.

WvW doesn’t pay the bills and as mentioned above it’s population is only a fraction of the games total member base.

If they seriously can´t think of a way to monetizie wvw, i say they need to fire people responsible for that and start looking for competent workers.

on crit effects are rather weak on our traits, and sigil effects have cooldowns anyhow, lowest being 2 seconds (bleed, lifesteal or chill), well vulnerability and might don´t have cooldowns but they aren´t exactly mad overpowered.

Aguess it could make a passable keep defense swap for d/d or s/d if you swap into staff with on crit sigil for chain ligthning and switch the fire trait for the bruning on crit.

A Second Chance?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Strang.8170

No.
Legendaries were originaly purely cosmetic and didn´t have any better stats than exotics, and never were supposed to have either if one believes the prelaunch advertisement.

Ascended added better stats, which put peoples panties (including mine) in to twist. And also since legendaries wouldn´t really be legendaries anymore they had to raise their stats too…well will have to as soon as ascended weapons release.

Ok so the complaints are coming from those who already have legendary weapons and transmuted them to the stats they wanted, and will not benifit from the boost to legendary weapons when it happens? I’m sorry its just confusing seeing alot of complaints about vertical progression when to me it looks like horizontal progression. I suppose you could see it as weapons getting a linear progression, but from the players standpoint its still a horizontal progression to get it.

Complaints are coming from sources pointed earlier, and if you necessarily want to delve more into that, this forum is still full of them.

It´s not horizontal.
You have a weapon with a set of stats, when another weapon is basicly the same but with +1 added to each stat, that´s vertical. You climb a hill of rising stats.
Horizontal progression is having 2 weapons of exactly same powerlevel, but different. For example having healing set and power set. You´ve reached the plateu, but can wander around to different directions.

crude example and expands to lot of other content to, but should make it easier to grasp, maybe.

So we have vertical progression until lvl80, at which point we have horizontal progression? So why all the complaints about vertical progression in reguards to the new content?

Because all of the pre-launch pr very appointedly spoke about there not being any more after having reached the power cap. Because we thought we´d have a level playing field after arriving at the said cap. Because people thought we´d have progression model more similiar to gw1 one than standard cookiecutter mmorpg. Because exotics themselves were borderline uncomfortably grindy for big part of the player base and ascended is that times about nine thousand.

…well to mention few, just look at the frontpage of this forum and you´ll find plenty mroe.

As for the vertical/horizontal progression, I am confused by these terms. All I know is for my character to go from point A to point B, I need to do certain things, and sometimes that involves repeating steps between points A and B.

Vertical, your character goes from+1 to +2.

Horizontal, your characters wardrobe goes from 1 dress to 2 dresses… Or a shinier dress.

Exotics hard to get? Ive equipped all 4 of my 80’s in pure 80 exotics in less than 2 days after getting 80…you can run a dungeon all paths and get 180 a day..that is a piece a day..so yeah..this holds no validity. Not to mention you get about 12 if you complete all the 60-80 areas..which will get you to your 80 sets. There are plenty of ways to get exotics easily.

Obviously not for you.

8 days to get a dungeon armor set, if you run 3 paths a day. weapons add another 1-2 days.
Crafted is easiest, but stat variety is limited, and price trend is up up up with the ascended grind skewing material prices way up. 10-20g at cheapest, considerable amount for some of us.
Karma armor may be easier if you haven´t found anything to spend karma on, but stats are even more limited.
Wvw badges….who are we kidding?

It´s time consuming for some of us, too much for many infact. Personaly i was starting to acquire different armor sets to support builds i wanted to playwith, but as i saw ascended hit the fan, i just couldn´t be arsed anymore, i propably will struggle to keep one armor set up to date

This is why I dislike pulling out simple analogies, everyone always wants to spread them like a pat of butter. Sometimes it’s just a slice of your average sandwich loaf toasted. Spreads easily, covers about the right amount.

Then there are some people needing it to cover a baguette. The butter just wears thin, you barely have it in some places and not at all in others, and yet you insisted it was enough for one piece of bread, this one shouldn’t be any different.

(Translation: This is a big matter, not a small one, and analogies / similes are a good start but they really don’t work for more complex matters.)

Ok, without analogy.

We´ve seen a start in a direction that we´ve been in before, we know where it leads. We have no reason to believe that they stop now that they´ve started going in that direction.
It may not be a inherently bad direction, but it just isn´t what this was all supposed to be about. We wanted something else and we were said the was going to be something else.

….frowning upon analogies with analogies…i´d make inception joke but it might lead to some very inappropriate sounding words…

I’ll make one for you.
If you disagree about using an inception joke, within an inception joke is that contraception?

. . . honestly I do grasp your point, but as I was trying to get across with my analogy; it’s not that I’m blind to the warning signs. It’s that I refuse to enter a panic over it, and I’d rather know for certain before . . . well, running full speed in the other direction.

Thing is that there´s not really that much going or waiting and seeing. If we wait and see and it turns okay, well that´s fine.

If we however voice our opinions we might avert the bad situation, so it´s either ending good anyway, or we might avert the bad situation.

Also at the end of the day if kitten hits the fan, we can say: “Hey, atleast we tried.”

Eschewing either is in itself a form of prejudice which unfortunately is the basis of your point towards what the OP is posting , which some of us readers find it hard to digest.

I said nothig like that.

As i said before, what i was trying to get through is that games are a form of entertainment, therefore it´s perfectly valid to expect to have easy fun in a game while not necessarily in real life.

You took my wording, games are for fun, thought it meant something differen than what i later clarified, and keep arguing about that when what i said has nothing to do with it.

I think you missed the point. He’s not saying why should games be fun, hes saying why should life not be fun.

The majority of people dont believe in hard work for reward, they are just forced in to that situation and social programmed to spout out the party line, and because if they have to suffer working hard so should everyone else.

How many of those same people would continue to work 48 hours a week in a minimum wage job if they won the lottery? All of a sudden, now they dont need to , the philosophy of working hard goes out the window.

Americans have it pretty bad with this stupid ‘hard work’ philosphy and work the longest hours of any country in the world. Yet their productivity is decreasing. Countries in Europe having been limiting working hours (france is down to 35 a week) and have seen productivity increasing. – not to mention minimum standards of paid time off. Equaly, quality of life is seen as much higher in Europe than in the US.

Ah, shouldn´t read things this early int he morning :/

I love when people take the approach of exclusion that proceeds with I am only playing this game for fun; but then expect the remaining community to be inclusive with one’s own position.
The fact is , you cannot use that approach, because not everyone adheres to your premise. While you feel that a game is an activity different from life, others may view their avatar as an extension of their character , unrestricted. Noone enjoys the friend who says lets play football together, but then does not give it any modicum of effort to, for lack of a better word, play… even though he agreed to join in the game. Ever thought about it that way?

Is your job perhaps playing the game? Does somenone use it as a punishment for you?
It´s a form of entertainment, you play it to be entertained. What you get your entertainment out of is up to you.
My point is that this is not real life, it´s not extension of real life either. It´s completely separate thing. Therefore it´s justifiable to want to easy fun, even if in real world you necessarily wouldn´t.
Please stop using my words to raise completely different arguments than what they were used to reply to.

People oppose the changes being made to Guild Wars 2 not because they are in love with Guild Wars 1 and want Guild Wars 2 to be the same as Guild Wars 1, but because the changes are bad changes, taken on their own merits.
<snip>

Ding ding ding- we have a winner.

Although I’m sure the OP and the likes knows that, but it wouldn’t make a good foundation for a complain post.

I’m unconvinced they are bad changes, though I remain open to the interpretation this could be the start of something going very wrong. I smell smoke, but I’m not entirely sure if it’s a bonfire or someone just having struck a match.

Bonfire is built and match is struck. It seems obvious it´s going to be lit.
And yet it was mentioned that there would be no bonfires, also we really really wanted to build a house out of the wood used in the bonfire

I am curious why you think an online game should have easy access to fun while real life shouldn’t.

Because that´s what they are for, fun.

Games are entertainment, they´re made to give us enjoyment….if they turn fun in to cheap skinners box, they´ve failed.

Getting any squishy class around solo to all the points is tough at best. WvWvW is horrid getting points unless your world is curbstomping the others. It will be weeks or months before I can complete it on my ele.

Open area points aren´t a problem, they can be soloed with any class, as easily as any of the pve ones.
Just keeping your eyes open and few mobility skills on bar gets you away from anything.

Keeps are the problem as you sometimes need to wait long periods before even having possibility of getting them, and that´s not an issue of profession(no profession can get in without siege). Frustrating when all you need is one vista from enemy borderlands garrison.

Woodenpotatoes completed prophecies solo, without henchmen….not really relevant but i thought it was pretty awesome thing nad also since gw1 happened to be mentioned.

Release era, or after NF with all of the expansion skills and the builds resulting from them? Either way that would be cool to watch. I need to look up those videos.

Apart from two missions he used skills he picked up along the playthrough.

Two missions that he didn´t? Thunderhead keep, he had to do perma tank build on a warrior through heavy use of consumables. And abaddons mouth he had to resort to spirit spam. Other than those 2 it was as if it was release era.

Glyph of storms, meteor shower, lavafont, burning retreat. Easy enough to get all those 4 ticking at the same time. In pve easy enough to gather 5 targets. In wvw too.
Bad side is that even if they split it pvp/pve, it´s still needs to be balanced with 5 max targets in mind, so fighting anything less it would be rather useless skill.
Another problem is the amount of skills ele can fire in rapid succession. For example channel churning earth, lightning flash in, arcane wave, lightning swap, lightning strike, blinding flash, rtl, backdraft, fire swap, phoenix, fire grab. That´s 10 (backdraft doesn´t hae damage) spells within few seconds, some of them possible hitting 1-5 opponents. And the overall effectiveness of the skill would need to be balanced with this kind of chains, abundance of aoe and multiple ways to stack fields in mind.

Why is it ok for thieves then?
Well the initiative system makes sure that they have much larger gaps between aoe skill uses, they have far lesser amount of aoe skills in first place, and their field spells are nearly non-existent compared to eles.

But at the end of the day there´s one thing that stops this from happening even more. Bunkers.
This would be a huge buff for bunkers, and anet has shown that bunkers will certainly not be buffed, no sir. Bunkers will atmost be nerfed further.
